  1. Everybody longs for deep, lasting love. But strong relationships don't

  2. just happen by accident. Today on Pastor Rick's Daily Hope,

  3. we're continuing our series called Finding and Keeping the Love

  4. of Your Life. Rick Warren will share practical, biblical wisdom

  5. for building healthier, stronger, Christ-centered relationships. So whether you're single, dating, engaged,

  6. or married, this series will help you grow in love, communication,

  7. and lasting commitment. So let's join Rick and listen to

  8. part one of a message called Growing a Love That Lasts.

  9. Over your lifetime, there's a lot of things that are

  10. going to change in your life. Some for good, some

  11. for bad. But there's one thing that's never, never, never, never,

  12. never going to change in your life. And it is

  13. God's unconditional, unrelenting, undiminished, everlasting love for you. That It's

  14. what you can build your life on. That's the foundation

  15. for a stable life. God's love is reliable. It is unchangeable.

  16. It is consistent. It is dependable. It's steadfast. It's unwavering.

  17. It's enduring. The fact that God will never, never, never

  18. love me anymore than he does in this moment, and

  19. he will never, never, ever love me any less than

  20. he does in this moment means that God's love for

  21. you and for me is everlasting. Everlasting. That's the way

  22. God loves you, but he doesn't stop there. He then

  23. says this, and here's the hard part. I want you

  24. to love everybody else the exact same way. Hello? What? No, no, no,

  25. I want the conditional love for me to give out.

  26. You gotta earn my love. No, God says, I want

  27. you to love with a love that lasts on and

  28. on and on. John chapter 15, if you pull out

    John 15 chapter mention

  29. your message notes, The very first verse, Jeremiah 31, verse three,

  30. God says, I've loved you with an everlasting love. I

  31. loved it in the message paraphrase. I've never quit loving you,

  32. and I never will. You can build your life on

  33. that verse right there. But then, here's the hard part,

  34. John 15, I command you to love each other, by

  35. the way, in the same way that I love you. Hmm. Hmm.

  36. How in the world do you do that? How do

  37. you practice everlasting love? I mean is it even possible

  38. to have everlasting love? Today in America the divorce rate

  39. is 41% for first time marriages. It's 60% for second

  40. time marriages. And the divorce rate for third time marriages

  41. is 73%. The track record gets worse. It gets worse.

  42. Now the truth is, anybody can fall in love, you know,

  43. it's like falling in a ditch. I fell in love.

  44. Anybody can fall in love, but it takes a whole

  45. lot more to stay in love. Everybody wanna agree with

  46. that one? Okay, it's a whole lot harder to stay

  47. in love than to fall in love. And the reason

  48. is because it includes choices. You have to make some

  49. tough choices in order to stay in love, and you

  50. have to make those choices over and over and over

  51. and over and over. I mean, is it even possible

  52. to have a love that lasts an entire lifetime? Let

  53. me just take a little survey here. If you have

  54. been married 25 years or longer, would you stand up

  55. right now? Okay, look at this, 25 years or longer,

  56. look at this. Okay. Congratulations. I honor you. Now, if

  57. you have been married over 40 years, stay standing. Look

  58. at this, 40 years. All right. Thank you. Now, if

  59. I were to ask each of these, you may be seated.

  60. If I were to ask each of these people who've

  61. been married 40 years or longer, was it easy? What

  62. do you think they'd say? Of course not. Kay and

  63. I last year had our 40th anniversary. I rolled over

  64. in bed in the morning. I said, I'm proud of you, honey.

  65. She said, I'm tired of you too. The hearing is

  66. the first thing to go, you know. Mark Twain said,

  67. you don't really know the depths of real love till

  68. you've been married 25 years. You can get along on

  69. good looks for five or six. I'm no prophet, but

  70. I can tell you two things about the people who

  71. just stood. Number one was their love. If they've been

  72. married 25 years or longer, their love has been tested

  73. by doubt and depression and despair and differences and disagreements

  74. and disappointments and defeats and their love has been tested

  75. by distance and it's been tested by delays and dead

  76. ends and by debt and by disease and by demands

  77. on their life because it's not easy to stay together

  78. These are what I call the big Ds, doubt, despair, death, disease,

  79. all these things. But they avoided the big D, divorce.

  80. They made it over that one. And the reason they

  81. made it over that one is because they made some

  82. tough choices. These choices are not always popular, they're not

  83. always easy, they're certainly not convenient. But the fact is,

  84. and I've told you this many times, love is a choice.

  85. Love is not a feeling. Love produces feelings, whoo-hoo. Yeah,

  86. it produces some great feelings, but love is not a feeling.

  87. If love were a feeling, God could not command it,

  88. because you can't command a feeling. It's like telling a

  89. little kid who's crying, I command you to be happy.

  90. I'm trying, Daddy. You can't force the feelings. Feelings are

  91. just there. You can't command a feeling. Love is not

  92. a feeling. It produces feelings. Love is a choice. You

  93. choose to love. And if you stop loving, that's your choice.

  94. Don't blame anybody else. You chose to stop loving. Love

  95. is a choice. And you choose to love or you

  96. choose to not love. Now if you want to make

  97. a love last, and I know you do, and as

  98. your pastor, this church is committed to helping people find

  99. the love of their life, those who want to marry,

  100. It's committed to helping you stabilize and strengthen your relationships,

  101. whether you're ever married or not. Friendships, partnerships, marriages, families,

  102. all the other kinds of relationships there are. You can't

  103. live in a world without love, whether you're ever married

  104. or not. But if you want to learn to love

  105. in ways like God loves, the everlasting kind of love,

  106. you're going to have to learn to make four very

  107. important choices. We're going to look at them this weekend.

  108. Now of course the great chapter in the Bible on

  109. love is 1 Corinthians chapter 13. It's called the love chapter.

    1 Corinthians 13 chapter mention

  110. And we're gonna in just a minute look at what

  111. God says are the four things, are the four choices

  112. I must make in order to make it to the

  113. finish line. In order to have a love that lasts

  114. a lifetime. 1 Corinthians chapter 13 verse seven says this.

    1 Corinthians 13 chapter mention

  115. Four things about love. Four choices we need to make.

  116. Love Never stops being patient. Never stops believing. Never stops hoping.

  117. And never gives up. That's everlasting love. That's the kind

  118. of love God has for you. It's the kind of

  119. love God wants you to have for other people. And

  120. so this weekend, Tom and I want to share with

  121. you these four choices. Let's get right into it. Number one,

  122. the first choice. Choice for a lasting love is that

  123. lasting love extends grace. Lasting love extends grace. I wanna

  124. spend the most time on this point because the longer

  125. you are married, the easier it is to become ungracious.

  126. You just start getting a little bit more critical as

  127. time goes on, taking each other for granted. Every day,

  128. if you're gonna have a love that lasts, you've gotta

  129. choose to be merciful, choose to be loving, choose to

  130. be gracious, choose to forgive, choose to be patient, choose

  131. to cut people slack. No relationship, whether it's marriage or

  132. any other, no relationship is gonna last without grace, without

  133. a little bit of forgiveness, without a lot of acceptance

  134. and a lot of patience. In any long-term relationship, you

  135. have to put up with a lot, right? I saw

  136. some elbows jab just then. Now, let's just admit it.

  137. It's easy to show grace one time. You hurt me

  138. one time, that's no big deal. I can forgive you

  139. for that. I'm a big enough guy. It's no big

  140. deal to forgive a person, to show grace, to show

  141. patience one time. It's that thing that goes on and

  142. on and on and on and on and just irritates

  143. you no end. But the Bible says this. Love never

  144. stops being patient. The message says love puts up with anything.

  145. The Bible says love patiently accepts all things. The Bible

  146. says love is always ready to make allowances. Now, when

  147. do I need to extend grace to the people in

  148. my life? Three important times. You need to write these down.

  149. Three important times you need to work on. This is

  150. a choice you're going to have to make every day

  151. of your life. You're going to have your relationships last.

  152. Showing grace. The first time is I'm gonna have to

  153. show or extend grace when their flaws and their faults

  154. irritate me. I heard a murmur in the land just now.

  155. When their flaws and their faults irritate me. Now the

  156. longer you love somebody, the more you know their flaws.

  157. And you can either be critical or you can be gracious.

  158. You can be picky or you can be kind. You

  159. can be a perfectionist or you can show mercy. The

  160. reason why grace is essential in any relationship is because

  161. we're both, in that relationship, imperfect. You're a sinner, they

  162. are a sinner. Together, two sinners can't create a perfect relationship.

  163. It is impossible and foolish to think that two imperfect

  164. people could create a perfect relationship. It isn't gonna happen.

  165. So grace has to be at the foundation of every

  166. single human relationship between parents and children, brothers and sisters,

  167. moms and dads, husbands and wives, boyfriends and girlfriends, employees

  168. and employers, coworkers, and on and on and on. We

  169. need grace. Proverbs 17, verse nine. Disregarding another person's faults

  170. preserves love. I love that. I remember hearing one time

  171. a lady talking to another lady in church and she said,

  172. do you remember when your husband did that? And she

  173. was talking about a bad thing that happened. And I

  174. loved what this woman said. She said, I distinctly remember

  175. forgetting that event. That's a choice. I distinctly remember forgetting

  176. that event. Why? Because love disregards. Love disregards another person's fault.

  177. That preserves love. Ephesians 4.2. Be humble and gentle by

  178. being patient with each other. Making allowances for each other's

  179. faults because of your love. Circle the phrase making allowances. Now,

  180. notice it says be humble, be gentle, and it says

  181. be loving because of your love. Do you consider yourself

  182. to be a loving person? You'd say probably, yeah, I do.

  183. Do you consider yourself to be a humble person? Yeah,

  184. I just wrote a book on it, it's a bestseller.

  185. How to be humble like me. Do you consider yourself

  186. to be a gentle person? Well, the truth is, you're

  187. none of those if you're critical of other people's faults

  188. and flaws. You are not humble if you are critical

  189. of other people's faults and flaws. You are prideful. Every

  190. time you criticize somebody's faults and somebody's flaws, you are

  191. being prideful. You are not being gentle and you certainly

  192. are not being loving. Because love is patient. Love puts

  193. up with anything. Love patiently accepts all things. Love is

  194. always ready to make allowances. Everybody needs an allowance. The

  195. rest of your life you're going to need a grace

  196. allowance in all of your relationships. Kay knows that there

  197. are two times of the week when she needs to

  198. make special allowance for me. The first is Saturday afternoon

  199. when I get PMS. Pre-message syndrome. I'm just going, oh God,

  200. this is not good enough. These people need something better

  201. than this. Surely somebody could teach this better than me.

  202. Why don't you get somebody who really knows how to

  203. do this? And I'm always going through this every week going,

  204. you know, pre-message syndrome. And then the other time she

  205. shows grace is on Monday when I'm recovering. Huh. after

  206. all of the multiple services of the weekend. But she

  207. makes allowances. When other flaws and faults irritate me, then

  208. I need to extend grace. Another time is when their

  209. words or actions hurt me. Now the truth is, because

  210. we're human beings, we hurt each other, sometimes intentionally. But

  211. the truth is, a lot of times we hurt each

  212. other unintentionally. We say things we don't mean. We say

  213. things off the cuff. We do things, we're not thoughtful.

  214. We're thinking about ourselves. We're not intentionally trying to be hurtful,

  215. but often we're careless with our words and with our actions.

  216. And the reason why we're careless is because we're not

  217. paying attention. We're not paying attention to other people's lives.

  218. You might write this on your outline. Grace listens. Grace listens.

  219. Grace listens. The reason why we hurt each other is

  220. because we're not really listening to each other. God gave

  221. you two ears and one mouth. You know that means

  222. you listen twice as much as you talk. The first

  223. duty of love is to listen. I'll say it again.

  224. The first duty of love is always to listen. The

  225. number one organ for showing love is your ear. It's listen.

  226. When you look at people in the eye and you

  227. listen to them with your ear, you're saying, I value you.

  228. And that says, I love you. And it makes you gracious.

  229. The problem we have in all our relationships is we

  230. talk too much and we listen too little. You know,

  231. I grew up in the country and we actually had

  232. a lake behind our house and it was filled with

  233. French frogs who would croak every night. Did you know

  234. that bullfrogs, when they croak, they have a muscle up

  235. in their throat that when they croak, that muscle cancels

  236. that frequency to their brain. They can't hear how obnoxious

  237. they are. We're a lot like bullfrogs. We don't realize

  238. how obnoxious we are when we're talking, talking, talking, talking,

  239. and we're not listening, and we can't even hear it. Now,

  240. I used to do marriage counseling. I can't do it

  241. anymore because our church is just so big. But when

  242. I did, the single most important marriage advice I could

  243. give you for the rest of your life is the

  244. next verse. James chapter one verse 19, it's up here

  245. on the screen. Everyone should be quick to listen, slow

  246. to speak, and slow to become angry. If every married

  247. couple followed that verse, 95% of all the arguments wouldn't happen.

  248. Usually we're quick to speak and we're slow to listen.

  249. and then we're fast to anger. Now if you do

  250. the first two, the third is automatic. If you are

  251. quick to listen, and if you are slow to speak,

  252. you will be slow to get angry. That's a choice.

  253. It's not an easy choice. It's not a convenient choice.

  254. But that's a loving choice. It's an unselfish choice. And

  255. if you wanna have a love that lasts forever, you

  256. gotta learn how to be quick to listen and slow

  257. to speak. So slow to have, instead of being angry.

  258. Now if you want a love that lasts, You can't

  259. hold on to those anchors. You can't hold on to

  260. your hurts. A lot of people, when they get hurt

  261. in a relationship, they stockpile them for ammunition. They not

  262. only stockpile, they not only remember every hurt they've done,

  263. they categorize them. They inventory them. They get them all

  264. ready so then later when they do a mistake, they go, well,

  265. you did this, but you did this, but you did this,

  266. but you did this, but you did this, but you

  267. did this. I was talking to a lady the other day,

  268. and she said, man, you know, I did something wrong,

  269. and my husband got historical. I said, you mean hysterical?

  270. And he said, no, no, historical. He told me everything

  271. I've ever done wrong. The Bible says love keeps no

  272. record of wrongs. You gotta let it go. Proverbs 17,

  273. verse nine, love forgets mistakes, nagging about them parts the

  274. best of friends. If you want your marriage to last,

  275. you gotta eliminate nagging. It doesn't work. It's never changed

  276. into anybody, which is, by the way, why I don't

  277. nag you. Nagging doesn't work in the home. It doesn't

  278. work from the pulpit. Every week, I could get up

  279. here and tell you everything you're doing wrong, because I

  280. know it. I see you. I read your mail. And

  281. I could get up here, and I could just nag

  282. you every week. Has nagging ever changed anybody? No, it doesn't.

  283. It's worthless. It doesn't work in church. It doesn't work

  284. at home. It doesn't work at school. It doesn't work

  285. at work. It doesn't work anywhere. Nagging parts the best

  286. of friends. The Bible says love forgives all offenses. And

  287. there on your outline, Proverbs 19, 11, when someone wrongs you,

  288. it is a great virtue to what? Circle that. Ignore it.

  289. Just ignore it. That's extending grace.
