  1. Good to see you all having fellowship

  2. and uh enjoying each other's company. My

  3. name is Tom. I am uh as Josh mentioned

  4. what's called an elder in training. So

  5. I'm in in the evaluation period of

  6. becoming an elder here. And uh so I've

  7. been given the opportunity also to

  8. preach this morning. I'm really excited

  9. about it. Um we're going to be in the

  10. book of Ecclesiastes picking up where we

  11. left off last week. Josh Josh Josh's

  12. message last week in chapter 8 and we're

  13. going to be in verses 14 to1 17. So if

  14. you have your Bible or you have one of

  15. those journals that we have be good to

  16. open that Ecclesiastes 8 14-1 17. And as

  17. we've learned it's a collection of

  18. writings from a person that uh we

  19. identified himself as the preacher in in

  20. the ESV the word preacher. We've called

  21. we use the Hebrew acronym Cohelith

  22. because it could be preacher, teacher,

  23. professor. It could be a lot of things,

  24. but ESV says he's the preacher and he's

  25. introduced to us as king in Jerusalem.

  26. He's wealthy, wise, powerful, someone

  27. you'd probably want to listen to, I

  28. think, for advice,

  29. especially since he's looked at life and

  30. sought to find out what really matters.

  31. Meandering down multiple paths,

  32. including pleasure, money, power,

  33. wisdom. He's given himself over to

  34. meaningful work. He's built things.

  35. He's bought things. He's enjoyed all the

  36. fine pleasures of life. But what he's

  37. found is that all these these paths

  38. appear to be dead ends

  39. uh when it comes to trying to figure out

  40. what really matters.

  41. Instead, he only finds brokenness and

  42. often comes to the conclusion that just

  43. vanity. All is vanity. We use the term

  44. hevil because that word vanity can mean

  45. mist or vapor. just something that you

  46. can't really grasp,

  47. vanity.

  48. But he's learned some things along the

  49. way, things that are important and wise

  50. and helpful for living in a broken and a

  51. crooked world. And um one of the real

  52. realizations that he we he came to is

  53. that you really have no control over

  54. life. And this was about two weeks ago,

  55. I think we started chapter 8. Uh you you

  56. don't have any control over life. So,

  57. how do you then be wise in that context?

  58. How can you exercise wisdom when you

  59. have no control? And it was especially

  60. helpful to hear about when you're in a

  61. in a situation where you your wisdom is

  62. better than your higher up. How do you

  63. deal with that? What's the best way to

  64. approach that? Um

  65. how do you be wise when things are out

  66. of your control and you're smart and not

  67. everyone else is or you have wisdom?

  68. be wise

  69. because you know what in the presence of

  70. the king you can be promoted or

  71. executed. Remember you said that. Um

  72. last week was interesting too. Uh we we

  73. were reminded that when things appear to

  74. be unfair, it's best to just wait, you

  75. know, and and let the d I remember the

  76. the term you use. I wasn't here last

  77. week, by the way. Let the dust settle.

  78. Uh knowing that justice will be served

  79. by God eventually. we don't have to fret

  80. about things that that are unfair. And

  81. this morning's message is not all that

  82. different. Um we're picking up in verse

  83. 14, circling back to this issue of

  84. justice and fairness

  85. and what is God doing.

  86. Preacher reminds us that when life's not

  87. fair and you can't figure out what God's

  88. doing, don't let that prevent you from

  89. enjoying God's good gifts.

  90. Or or maybe put it this way, don't be so

  91. consumed about chasing the mist that you

  92. miss out on enjoying God's good

  93. blessings, his good gifts to us.

  94. He commends us to enjoy life in the

  95. midst of all the confusion, the chaos,

  96. the unanswered questions. He says,

  97. "Enjoy life."

  98. So, let's read in verse 14. Let's pick

  99. up there

  100. and I'm going to go ahead and pray and

  101. ask God to guide us and bless us as we

  102. read the passage and try and understand

  103. what he's saying. Lord, thank you so

  104. much for your word that um Isaiah tells

  105. us does not return void. And I pray for

  106. hearts today that wherever people are

  107. at, lots of different people and stages

  108. of life, that you would minister through

  109. your word, that you would uh give faith

  110. and hope and joy as we talk about these

  111. things, Lord. And we ask this in

  112. Christ's name. Amen.

  113. There is a vanity that takes place on

  114. the earth that there are righteous

  115. people to whom it happens according to

  116. the deeds of the wicked and there are

  117. wicked people to whom it happens

  118. according to the deeds of the righteous.

  119. I said that this is also vanity or mist

  120. or vapor.

  121. Verse 15. And I commend joy, for man has

  122. nothing better under the sun but to eat

  123. and drink and be joyful, for this will

  124. go with him in all his toil throughout

  125. the days of his life that God has given

  126. him under the sun. Verse 16. When I

  127. applied my heart to know wisdom and to

  128. see the business that is done on the

  129. earth, how neither day or night do one's

  130. eyes sleep, then I saw all the work of

  131. God, that man cannot find out the work

  132. that is done under the sun. However much

  133. man may toil in seeking, he will not

  134. find it out. Even though a wise man

  135. claims to know, he cannot find it out.

  136. We're going to take that passage and you

  137. know this is difficult. Ecclesiastes is

  138. kind of hard for me with a linear sort

  139. of straight line. He's circling back and

  140. coming back to things and it's tough to

  141. sort of pin them down. He meanders quite

  142. a bit. So, it's hard to do outlines, but

  143. I'm going to try my best here. We're

  144. going to do uh four main uh sections

  145. actually. The the first is verse 14, the

  146. unfairness of life.

  147. The second is the failure of wisdom in

  148. verses 16 to 17. Those are the joy

  149. killers.

  150. If you set your mind to try and figure

  151. these things out, it'll kill your joy.

  152. Third, verse 15, we're going to take it

  153. out of order because I'm going to give

  154. him a little dose of his own medicine.

  155. Skipping around a little bit here. Uh

  156. the commenation of joy, verse 15, and

  157. then we're going to talk about how to

  158. cultivate joy, the more kind of

  159. application stuff. So, let's look at

  160. verse 14. And I I think the point is

  161. don't expect there to be justice in the

  162. world. Don't expect it. It'll it'll

  163. happen. Uh as we learned last week, God

  164. will take care of things, but there's a

  165. vanity, he says, that takes place where

  166. the righteous get what's meant for the

  167. wicked, the wicked get blessed what

  168. should be for the righteous, and it's

  169. not right. It's vanity. It's missed.

  170. It's vapor. Something you can't figure

  171. out or grasp. It's unfair.

  172. People don't get what they rightly

  173. deserve. And it's not new. He continues

  174. to circle back to this idea. We saw it

  175. in chapter 7:15. In my vain life, I've

  176. seen everything. There's a righteous man

  177. who perishes in his righteousness, and

  178. there is a wicked man who prolongs his

  179. life in his evil doing. It's not right.

  180. Chapter 3 16. Moreover, I saw under the

  181. sun that the place the the pl in the

  182. place of justice there was wickedness,

  183. and in the place of righteousness there

  184. was wickedness.

  185. Chapter 4:1 I saw all the oppression

  186. that are done under the sun and behold

  187. behold the tears of the oppressed and

  188. they had no one to comfort them on the

  189. side of their oppressors. There was

  190. power but there was no one to comfort

  191. them. It's just not right. He'll come

  192. back to it in chapter nine again verse

  193. 11. We won't read that one. He comes

  194. face to face with the hard reality that

  195. life is not fair and justice is not to

  196. be found.

  197. though he knows ultimately God will

  198. bring justice. He just said that in

  199. chapter 8 verses 12 and 13. But he can't

  200. seem to get beyond

  201. the reality that here and now it's just

  202. all messed up. It reminds me uh I'm go

  203. dating myself big time here, but there's

  204. a song by a band called Switchfoot. I I

  205. really love those guys. They talked

  206. about the world is spinning backwards

  207. and upside down. And that's kind of what

  208. the preacher's seeing.

  209. And maybe that's how you feel today too

  210. sometimes. You know, it just seems like

  211. things are not the way they should be.

  212. Nothing seems to go right. Maybe you're

  213. undercompensated for your work. You

  214. don't get the good projects or you're

  215. just overworked. You just always get

  216. everything including the bad stuff.

  217. There's so many ways for us to get

  218. trapped in that downward sort of spin

  219. cycle that just says life is not fair.

  220. Life's not fair. Now, verse 16 doesn't

  221. help us much either. He says in verse

  222. 16, "When I applied my heart to know

  223. wisdom and see the business that is done

  224. on the earth, how neither day or night

  225. one's eyes see sleep,

  226. and I saw the work of God." And you know

  227. what? You can't figure God out in this.

  228. What's God doing? There's no answers.

  229. There's no answers to the injustice.

  230. So adding to it, all the churning and

  231. sleepless nights produces no answer.

  232. Even for a guy who has set his heart to

  233. attain wisdom. After all his attaining,

  234. he still comes to the conclusion there's

  235. no answers.

  236. Pretty bleak.

  237. The preacher is not bearing much good

  238. news, is he? Maybe you've felt that way.

  239. Well, I'm so thankful for verse 15.

  240. Because finally we get something

  241. positive and helpful. The commenation of

  242. joy.

  243. I commend joy for no man for man has no

  244. good thing under the sun but to eat and

  245. drink and be joyful. For this will go

  246. with him in his toil throughout the days

  247. of his life that God has given him under

  248. the sun.

  249. Though life is unfair. The unrighteous

  250. get rewarded. The righteous get nothing.

  251. and you don't see what God's doing in

  252. all of it.

  253. Enjoy life.

  254. Don't let the he, the confusion, the

  255. mist keep you from enjoying God's good

  256. gifts that he blesses us with every day.

  257. Don't let it rob you of your joy.

  258. And it's not the first time he's landed

  259. here either. We know from previous

  260. Ecclesiastes 2, there's nothing better

  261. for a person than to eat and drink and

  262. and find enjoyment in his toil.

  263. This also I saw is from the hand of God.

  264. That's the key. For apart from him, who

  265. can eat or who can have enjoyment?

  266. Chapter 3:12. There's nothing better for

  267. them than to be joyful and to do good as

  268. long as they live. Also that everyone

  269. should eat and drink and take pleasure

  270. in all his toil. This is the gift of

  271. God.

  272. Again, 5:18 and 19, I've seen a good I

  273. have seen uh uh behold what I have seen

  274. to be good and and fitting is to eat and

  275. drink and find enjoyment in the toil

  276. with which one toils under the sun the

  277. few days of his life that God has given

  278. him. For this is his lot.

  279. And then he says, "And everyone who to

  280. whom God has given wealth and

  281. possessions and power to enjoy them and

  282. to accept his lot and rejoice in his

  283. toil." This is the gift of God.

  284. We can miss that if we're so spun up

  285. over unfairness and what's God doing? We

  286. could miss it.

  287. God is the gift

  288. and the giver of the gift. As CS Lewis

  289. stated,

  290. uh, God can't be used as a road. If

  291. you're approaching him not as the goal,

  292. but as the road, not as the end, but as

  293. the means, you're not really approaching

  294. him at all. And so when he says enjoy

  295. life, he's saying enjoy God.

  296. Enjoy his blessings that point to him.

  297. [clears throat]

  298. And he lifts up joy as something to be

  299. praised and sought after.

  300. And I think what he's getting at is that

  301. um as frustrating as things get um

  302. all along the way we can see glimpses of

  303. God. We can see his fingerprints over

  304. everything. We can see sparks of the

  305. divine. I think someone said

  306. if not daily glimpses of his glory in

  307. everything.

  308. And what a place to rest after all his

  309. churning. You know, reminds me of uh we

  310. went down to Southern California and my

  311. son wanted to show us a beach in

  312. Oceanside or Carl'sbad that we had gone

  313. to a few weeks ago and it was now

  314. covered. It was just the oceans coming

  315. up. And so we're walking and I'm in

  316. flipflops, right? I never wear flip

  317. flops, but we're, you know, for them

  318. like a mile is like nothing. But for me,

  319. I'm almost dying after a mile in flip

  320. flops. My my calves are on fire, right?

  321. And I'm just looking for somewhere to

  322. sit down and I'm thinking I got to

  323. pretend like I got to go to a bathroom

  324. or something because I got to go sit

  325. down, but I don't want to say it.

  326. But this is refreshing, right? Joy. Hey,

  327. in the midst of all this churning, he

  328. sits down and says,

  329. I commend joy

  330. in the midst of it.

  331. It's like a a bench, a nice park bench

  332. after a long walk.

  333. Albert Barnes writes in his commentary,

  334. "The preacher is careful to set forth

  335. pleasure as a gift from God to be earned

  336. by labor and received with thankfulness

  337. to the giver."

  338. The Bible knowledge commentary, "Man

  339. cannot control or predict adversity or

  340. prosperity. However, each day's joys

  341. should be received as gifts from God's

  342. hand and savored as God permits."

  343. He wants us to know that in the midst of

  344. the difficult and disappointing things

  345. we face in life, there's a place for

  346. joy. There's a place for enjoyment.

  347. And it's not to be seen as a consolation

  348. prize to numb us to the pain of life in

  349. this broken world. Reminds me of I don't

  350. know if they still do this at the

  351. dentist, but when I was a kid going to

  352. the dentist, you got to go to the toy

  353. chest. Do they still have that? It's

  354. lame. You're all you, you know, you just

  355. got drilled on. You're full of Novacane.

  356. You're slobbering looking at this toy

  357. chest and it's like a consolation prize

  358. for just getting beat on.

  359. The preacher's not saying that. He's not

  360. saying that, hey, just find little

  361. things to numb the pain. It's a

  362. persistent joy in the midst of the

  363. difficulties. He describes it in an

  364. interesting way. He says, "For this joy

  365. will go with him in his toil through the

  366. days of his life that God has given him

  367. under the sun." And one person wrote,

  368. "Joy is like a companion who accompanies

  369. us wherever we go."

  370. And though he's come to the conclusion

  371. that pleasure is not what really

  372. matters, here we see it's it's as a gift

  373. that will orient us in the direction to

  374. find what really does matter,

  375. namely God, because he's the giver of

  376. the gift and all the gifts point to him.

  377. And so he enables us to enjoy them so

  378. that we will see him.

  379. But it's still hard, right? He commends

  380. joy. It's almost comical in some ways,

  381. right? Sarcastic maybe. He he tells us

  382. how terrible things are. And he says,

  383. "Enjoy it." Is that is that it? Enjoy

  384. your life. You know, well, it's hard.

  385. And we we can cultivate joy. And I'm

  386. going to talk about the rest of our

  387. time. Actually, I'm going to spend

  388. talking about cultivating joy. What time

  389. we do I need to be done? Like

  390. >> 10:30? No, 11:30.

  391. We'll we'll see. No, I won't go that

  392. long. Hopefully. I got I do have quite a

  393. few notes here. [laughter] I didn't I

  394. don't know. We'll see. You guys may be

  395. begging to leave. How to cultivate joy.

  396. How can we enjoy life in the midst of

  397. its confusing mysteries, injustices?

  398. Life can really be hard. You know, maybe

  399. you love your job and you're blessed or

  400. you've come to the place where you've

  401. learned this what he's saying already.

  402. That's great. But most of us, I think,

  403. struggle with work. Um, you know, you

  404. you got to sit in traffic to get there.

  405. That's like insult on top of injury,

  406. right? You're going to work that you

  407. got, you know, tough some tough

  408. co-workers, maybe some tough business

  409. partners, maybe the projects you don't

  410. like, and then you got to sit in traffic

  411. for a half hour just to get there, and

  412. then 40 minutes to get home. So, it's

  413. just weird, not fair. So, how do you

  414. have joy in the midst of that?

  415. Maybe, you know, I think think about

  416. some of you uh families that are

  417. homeschooling with little kids at home

  418. and and that's huge 247, right? You're

  419. you're with kids 247 and that's hard.

  420. You know, how do you muster up joy?

  421. Well, you don't muster it up, but you

  422. can cultivate it. You can cultivate it.

  423. How about when you know things get

  424. really bad and someone gets really sick

  425. or dies? Can you have joy? Can you

  426. rejoice in those things?

  427. It's not a switch that you can turn on

  428. or off, but it's something we can

  429. cultivate. And so, I'm going to give you

  430. just a few ideas, and these are I mean,

  431. it's almost uh I don't know, comical,

  432. not comical, but very simple, basic

  433. stuff. Number one is God. I'm going to

  434. give you four words. I'll give them to

  435. you right now. God, the spirit,

  436. creation, and heaven.

  437. those those things will help you

  438. cultivate joy if you just you know we'll

  439. talk about it but God in spite of the

  440. dark outlook on life that the writer

  441. understands something of the nature of

  442. God and he he's beginning to point us in

  443. in that direction and as Christians we

  444. have an even more fuller understanding

  445. of God because he's revealed himself

  446. comprehensively through Jesus he became

  447. man he lived and through the scriptures

  448. We have the New Testament.

  449. He's revealed himself way more

  450. comprehensively than the preacher here

  451. understands.

  452. He's revealed himself as an all

  453. powerful, all- knowing, sovereign,

  454. gracious father who loves us and who is

  455. working things out for his glory, which

  456. is also for our good. And I that's

  457. important because we find our greatest

  458. joy and fulfillment when we connect with

  459. God in a way that we see him. We see his

  460. glory. We see him for who he is. And

  461. there's a a great song. I'm I'm probably

  462. going to fall apart reading it. Um

  463. there's a song uh City of Light. I love

  464. these little Australian band from you

  465. know just a church worship team writing

  466. this great music.

  467. And there's a song that's called His

  468. Glory and My Good. Has anyone ever heard

  469. that song, His Glory, Amood? I'm going

  470. to try and read the first verse and then

  471. maybe the second verse and maybe the

  472. chorus, but I don't know if I'll get

  473. through it. Uh, it's it goes like this.

  474. He it says, "I have seen my father's

  475. glory revealed in Jesus Christ,

  476. and the more that I behold him, the more

  477. he satisfies.

  478. When I gaze upon his beauty,

  479. when I see him as I should, then my eyes

  480. are lifted upward for his glory and my

  481. good.

  482. Forget the second verse. [laughter]

  483. Uh the chorus though, to our God be

  484. glory, to our God be praise, he alone

  485. the name above all names.

  486. I will boast ever only in the Lord my

  487. God, for I know his glory is my good.

  488. Amen.

  489. And you know, in Jesus, we're connected

  490. to the God who's all powerful, all

  491. glorious, who's loving, who's kind, who

  492. wants what's best for us. And um that's

  493. an amazing thing. And we need to

  494. constantly remind ourselves of that. And

  495. I can't even see my notes. Sorry.

  496. You got to teach me how to get through

  497. these uh emotional moments. It's

  498. awkward. I know. What the heck? Now, I'm

  499. going to talk about father. He's our

  500. father, right? Father. God's a father.

  501. And I loved what you said last week

  502. about that. He's, you know, we we need

  503. to see God as a father. And fathers have

  504. a unique role. I mean, God designed, he

  505. created family with father and mother.

  506. And for some reason, he wants us to

  507. identify him as a father. I don't know

  508. why he did that, but he did. And when I

  509. think about, you know, not everyone has

  510. a great father. You know, we all have

  511. fathers in a sense. Maybe your father

  512. was absent. I I'll say my father, I, you

  513. know, we lost him when he was when I was

  514. 15. But and and what I knew of him, you

  515. know, he was a stress case. He was a

  516. workaholic. Um, and but he he cared for

  517. us and he loved us and he provided for

  518. our needs. He he actually, this is back

  519. in the late 60s, probably

  520. picking a shovel, dug a hole in our

  521. backyard for a swimming pool. My mom

  522. tell me it took years for him to do

  523. that, but he wanted his kids to have a

  524. pool. It was a doughboy, right? Half in,

  525. half out with plastic liner. We had it

  526. for years, but he cared for us that

  527. much. He did some crazy things, you

  528. know. I remember one Christmas where uh

  529. there was a bunch of bikes around the

  530. Christmas tree. What he had done was

  531. secretly gone to garage sale. There was

  532. nine in our family, by the way. Seven

  533. boys, two girls. There was probably six

  534. bikes around the Christmas tree. And he

  535. had gone to garage sales and picked up

  536. used bikes and restored them. And we

  537. never even knew it. You know, my sister

  538. disagreed with me. She's the oldest and

  539. I'm kind of third from the bottom. She

  540. said, "I got a new bike." And I was

  541. like, "Okay,

  542. you were older. Maybe that was years

  543. ago. I'm thinking of a different

  544. Christmas. There's a lot of them in

  545. there, right?" So, but he did this, you

  546. know, we went on vacations every year,

  547. two vacations. We went camping at New

  548. Brighton Beach, Sea Cliff, and we went

  549. skiing in Lake Tahoe. And we had two

  550. station wagons, two full-size station

  551. wagons, 57

  552. Chevy Impala and a 64, no 57 Chevy Bair,

  553. and a 64 Impala four-door. We called it

  554. the boat. It was so huge. I remember

  555. curling up, you know, where the drive

  556. shaft is and there's little pockets. I

  557. remember being so small that I would

  558. curl up in that little area. No seat

  559. belts, obviously, no car seats. They

  560. would take two cars. My mom would drive

  561. one, he would drive the other. It was an

  562. ordeal.

  563. But he would he wanted us he wanted what

  564. was he wanted us to have fun. He wanted

  565. us to enjoy life. And he would even go

  566. to garage sales and buy used ski

  567. equipment so that we wouldn't have to

  568. rent it. Of course, no lift ticket.

  569. give the skis out

  570. up the hill

  571. all the way up the hill right until you

  572. could go no further and then you skied

  573. down and if you were not tired already

  574. you tried it again

  575. but my dad he wasn't the best you know

  576. he he was he was a he was a basket case

  577. I mean he had nine kids so I cut him

  578. some slack I've raised two I've raised

  579. three and now I I I realize you know

  580. what he had nine kids and But

  581. what he did was just infinitisimal

  582. picture of God, what he wants for us and

  583. how he wants us to enjoy him and his

  584. good gifts. So think of God when you

  585. think of

  586. cultivating joy. I'm going to read some

  587. passages uh that just help me. Isaiah

  588. 55. Eric, you alluded to it in our

  589. worship. I think it was Isaiah 55. Um

  590. he wants us to seek him, right? Isaiah

  591. says, "Seek the Lord while he may be

  592. found. He won't turn away. He will

  593. abundantly pardon." And then it says

  594. this, "For my thoughts are not your

  595. thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,

  596. declares the Lord. For as high as the

  597. heavens are higher than the earth, so

  598. are my ways higher than your ways, and

  599. my thoughts higher than your thoughts.

  600. For as the rain and snow come down from

  601. heaven, do not return there without uh

  602. but water the earth, making it bring

  603. forth and sprout, giving seed to the

  604. sewer and bread to the eater. So shall

  605. my word be that goes from my mouth. God,

  606. he's powerful and he's in control and we

  607. don't we're not going to follow him. You

  608. know, we're not going to understand

  609. everything he does. And I think Psalm

  610. 100, you, this was our call to worship.

  611. It was in my notes, so I'm going to read

  612. it again. Make a joyful noise to the

  613. Lord, all the earth. Serve the Lord with

  614. gladness. Come into his presence with

  615. singing. Know that the Lord, he is God.

  616. It is he who made us, and we are his.

  617. We're his people and the sheep of his

  618. pasture. Enter his gates with

  619. thanksgiving, his courts with praise.

  620. Give thanks to him. Bless his name. For

  621. the Lord is good. I love that. The Lord

  622. is good. You know, God gets a bad rap.

  623. People think he's bad for some reason,

  624. and they don't want to have anything to

  625. do with them. But God's good.

  626. He's good.

  627. His steadfast love endures forever and

  628. his faithfulness to all generations.

  629. He's good and faithful and he's our

  630. father.

  631. Romans 8, one of my favorite passages,

  632. uh Paul talking about so how um God

  633. works all things together for good to

  634. those who love him. And then he gives

  635. this whole chain of how God has brought

  636. us from

  637. animosity

  638. to glory, being against him to being

  639. saved,

  640. and on and on and on until we're

  641. glorified.

  642. And that's the path he's put us on. When

  643. we come to know Jesus, when we receive

  644. Jesus, God puts us on this path from

  645. being wretched sinners to being

  646. glorified

  647. and being able to see him face to face.

  648. And then verse 31 says, "What shall we

  649. what then shall we say to these things?"

  650. What shall we say to these things? If

  651. God is for us, who can be against us?

  652. He's already done all this.

  653. He who did not spare his own son, but

  654. gave him up for us all. How will he not

  655. also with him graciously give us all

  656. things?

  657. He's already done the greatest. He gave

  658. his son.

  659. He's going to give us everything else as

  660. well.

  661. Don't miss out on his blessings. Don't

  662. miss out on his good gifts.

  663. They these passages remind us that God

  664. is all powerful, sovereign, gracious,

  665. and kind. And he's a father who has

  666. blessed us beyond our imagination.

  667. Beyond our imagination.

  668. Ray Ortland senior writes this. We, my

  669. dear friends, always begin your thinking

  670. and your planning and your deciding from

  671. the standpoint of Jesus fullness in your

  672. life. Always begin with the plenty of

  673. God. Face life with all you have in

  674. Christ. Never begin with the problems

  675. and the troubles and the needs.

  676. Always begin with your standing in

  677. Christ. You can have rivers of living

  678. water splashing out on everybody. Christ

  679. in you. The fullness of grace and truth.

  680. That's what he gives.

  681. God, a good father, the spirit, the Holy

  682. Spirit, the empowering Holy Spirit.

  683. That's the second thing. God the spirit.

  684. We have the spirit who enables us. The

  685. Bible says for joy. Galatians 5:16. The

    Galatians 5:16

  686. fruit of the spirit.

  687. He's enabled us so that we can know God.

  688. As noted, the preacher understood that

  689. that this this uh enjoyment is a gift of

  690. God.

  691. Ecclesiastes 5, Ecclesiastes 5:19,

    Ecclesiastes 5:19

  692. right?

  693. God God gives the gift or in

  694. Ecclesiastes 6:1 and2, he might withhold

    Ecclesiastes 6:1

  695. it.

  696. The the ability to enjoy is the gift of

  697. God. And I wonder if the the writer of

  698. of Ecclesiastes was being prophetic in

  699. some way of the gift of the Holy Spirit

  700. that empowers us and enables us to have

  701. a supernatural joy.

  702. And according to the Apostle Paul, it's

  703. the spirit that gives us the

  704. supernatural wisdom to see and

  705. comprehend the things of God. 1

  706. Corinthians 2,

  707. we've not received the spirit of the

  708. world, but the spirit who is from God

  709. that we might understand the things

  710. freely given to us by God.

  711. Believers have this unique ability for a

  712. unique capacity. If you know Christ,

  713. you've been given the spirit. He's given

  714. you a capacity to see things, to see

  715. God's hand in your daily life in the

  716. things in all the ways that he's blessed

  717. us.

  718. And to even feel his presence as a

  719. father, that's a gift from the Holy

  720. Spirit. Romans 8:15-17.

    Romans 8:15–17

  721. You did not receive the spirit of

  722. slavery to fall back into fear, but you

  723. received the spirit of adoption as sons

  724. whom by whom we cry out, "Aba, Father."

  725. The Spirit himself bears witness with

  726. our spirit that we're children of God.

  727. The Spirit bears witness with us with

  728. our spirit that we have a father God

  729. who's in heaven. And if children then

  730. heirs and fellow heirs with Christ.

  731. Amazing.

  732. The Holy Spirit helps us in that way.

  733. And we already referenced uh Galatians

    Galatians 5:16

  734. 5:16.

  735. You look at the book of Acts. I'm not

  736. going you can jot these verses down.

  737. Acts 13. They were full of joy of the

  738. Holy Spirit. The spirit and joy are

  739. constantly connected. Romans 14. The

  740. kingdom of God is not a matter of eating

  741. and drinking, but of righteousness and

  742. peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. 1

  743. Thessalonians 1,

  744. I love this. I'll just read verse 6 and

  745. 7. You became imitators. He's talking to

  746. the church in Thessalonica. You became

  747. imitators of us and the Lord, for you

  748. received the word in much affliction

  749. with the joy of the Holy Spirit. So it

  750. it transcends your circumstances. Even

  751. this can happen. We have the capacity

  752. for this.

  753. Remember God. Remember he's given us the

  754. empowering Holy Spirit. And then uh an

  755. amazing creation. God's given us the

  756. creation as even in his fallen state.

  757. Even in his fallen state, there's so

  758. many things to enjoy.

  759. I mean, I'll talk about milkweed. You

  760. guys know what milkweed is? Milkweed is

  761. a weed that nobody wants in their yard.

  762. It's amazing. I got it and you know that

  763. it has these little pods. They're like

  764. little mini uh what's hang gliders or

  765. you know like little parachutes and it

  766. sends off seeds and it it spreads

  767. everywhere and so people want to get rid

  768. of it. But you know what? Milkweed is

  769. the only thing that monarch butterflies

  770. will lay their eggs on. So without

  771. milkweed they die and they've been dying

  772. off because people have been killing off

  773. the milkweed. Well, I got some milkweed

  774. and you know what? I got butterflies in

  775. my backyard. It's amazing. It's so

  776. amazing. I go out there and you know the

  777. hornets, the the wasps try to kill them.

  778. So I go out there with a little squirt

  779. bottle with soap in it.

  780. Boom, man. Nail them. But it's amazing

  781. because the if the caterpillars survive,

  782. then they they're sucking all this white

  783. milk out of the milkweed that's actually

  784. toxic for everything else. It's why

  785. birds won't eat monarch butterflies

  786. because they're full of toxicity.

  787. And then they'll spin up into a cocoon

  788. and that cocoon will then one day become

  789. a butterfly. Amazing. Why did God do

  790. that? Who cares? Just enjoy it. I think

  791. that's what that's what the writer of of

  792. of Ecclesiastes would say. Just enjoy

  793. it. You know, you can think of all kinds

  794. of things. Food, right? We all love

  795. food. What if God made everything taste

  796. like rice cakes

  797. and water? And you know what? He could

  798. have made us thrive on rice cakes and

  799. water when he created the universe. He

  800. could have been we could have been just

  801. like the monarch butterfly. All you can

  802. eat is rice cakes and water. But he

  803. didn't, right? He gives us all kinds of

  804. things. Fruits, meat, pizza, you name

  805. it. You know, he's allowed us to create

  806. other foods from the food that he

  807. created. My brother has these these

  808. fruits that are a combination of apricot

  809. and a plum. You ever heard of that?

  810. Amazing. They're amazing.

  811. Why did God do that? Who cares? Just

  812. enjoy it. Don't stress out over it.

  813. [laughter] You know, anyway, there's so

  814. many other things we could talk about.

  815. And don't get me going on squirrels.

  816. They're fun. But I you know what? We had

  817. a bunch of baby squirrels and they're

  818. fun to They were hopping around in the

  819. backyard chasing each other. They were

  820. like this big, right? I don't know.

  821. Maybe this big. They grow up and they

  822. tear our lawn apart.

  823. saw lawn. They just chewing it all up.

  824. Bonnie went bought an owl. A fake owl.

  825. It's got It's a fake owl and it its head

  826. spins around. It's got bright yellow

  827. eyes that flash and it shrieks

  828. and she put it on the front lawn and the

  829. squirrels are playing with it. They're

  830. just walking around like it's nothing.

  831. Can we get our money back for that? You

  832. think? I But anyway, it's just fun to to

  833. see and enjoy.

  834. God has put us on this planet under the

  835. sun in the midst of all the unfairness,

  836. the injustice, the toil, the worry

  837. figuring out God. But he's given us

  838. these gifts to enjoy. And I think that's

  839. what the writer is telling us. Enjoy his

  840. good gifts. Don't get sidetracked by all

  841. this other stuff. And I got more to say,

  842. but I'm not going to say it. The hope of

  843. heaven. That's the fourth one. Of

  844. course, I would just encourage you,

  845. listen to Josh's last message on heaven.

  846. When we see God face to face,

  847. that is the best thing that you will

  848. ever experience in life. You will, you

  849. can't even comprehend these little

  850. pleasures that we experience along the

  851. way, watching the squirrels and enjoying

  852. the butterflies and having a hamburger.

  853. They're just a taste of what we will see

  854. and what we'll experience when one day

  855. we see God face to face in heaven. And

  856. that's what we have to look forward to.

  857. So those four things I hope will help

  858. you to cultivate joy in your life. God,

  859. the Holy Spirit, creation, and heaven.

  860. And I'm going to close with a a quote

  861. from

  862. Ray Ortland Jr. who wrote a book called

  863. Eat, Drink, and Be Merry. Just came out

  864. this year. I think he writes this

  865. thinking of the eternal state when we're

  866. in heaven with God.

  867. Our joy will not be worked up by us. It

  868. will come down on us. Our joy will not

  869. be our willpower striving up to God. It

  870. will be God's grace smiling down on us.

  871. Our joy will not be a subjective wish

  872. fulfillment.

  873. It will be an objective reality.

  874. And we will not have to keep it up

  875. somehow. It will come down. It will keep

  876. coming down on us in an endless

  877. freshness and fullness.

  878. This joy will not be our achievement. It

  879. will be his bestowment.

  880. It will not be our mood of the moment.

  881. It will be the endless gift of God. It

  882. will not be us

  883. doing our duty. It will be him pouring

  884. out his mercy from a happy heart. And he

  885. quotes Zephaniah 3:17.

    Zephaniah 3:17

  886. We will fully know and feel how

  887. overflowingly

  888. he really does love us. And that's what

  889. we have to look forward to. But we can

  890. taste it now. You want that now? I I do.

  891. Let's pray.
