#688: Meekness and Humility

Anyway, verse 5 today.

Likewise, the elders submit yourselves to the elder.

Yea, all of you submit.

Be subject one to another.

Be clothed in humility, and God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.

Isn't that good news?

That's good news if you're humble, but bad news if you're proud.

So humble yourself, therefore, under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time.

Now it's not enough to say a sinner's prayer and just get up and go your own way again.

If there was no change, you didn't get it.

The only way a person can be right with God is to submit himself or herself to the Lordship of Christ.

There is no other way to be saved.

That requires some humility.

Amen.

And you know, we're so proud of our humility.

Aren't we?

I need to say that again.

It's been on me all week.

You got it the first time, didn't you?

These guys walking around all puffed up.

They're getting ready to have their bloom popped by the Holy Spirit and go all the way down to nothing.

Well, Matthew 5, 5 then.

So the challenge today is to not act humble, but be humble.

And you can you can when a preacher walks to the pulpit to preach, you can tell if he's humble or arrogant and proud.

Just by body language.

Doesn't take much discernment to figure that out, right?

I pick up on all these things with people.

I've learned.

But in Matthew 5, 5, blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.

Now that will totally take place in the future.

Right now, we're heading that way.

And one day we're going to completely take over and inherit the entire earth.

Right now we don't have it yet.

Satan's still got his ugly paws in here, and he's the one causing all this trouble in this earth that we live on.

So the word meek and humble are somewhat the same.

The word meek means to be, everybody's saying meek.

Now, we want to be meek, don't we?

So we're going to inherit the earth if we're meek.

Have a mild disposition.

I know a lot of hellcats.

I don't know very many people that's got a mild disposition.

Now, Monty's pretty mild, his disposition.

It takes a lot to upset him, doesn't it, Joanne?

A lot.

But you do have your breaking point, don't you?

Like all we humans do.

But we need to be meek.

It means to be humble, gentle in spirit, and I put in the Davis theology word tamed.

If you ever break a horse or shoe a horse, that horse needs to be tamed before you try to nail the shoes on the bottom of the hoofs.

Are you gonna have a problem?

And so we need to be broke before the Lord.

We need to be meek.

Moses, Numbers uh 12 and verse 3.

See, we think that being meek means to be timid or push over.

No.

Numbers 12, 3.

Now the man Moses was very meek.

Above all the men were upon the face of the earth.

Sound like to me that was a quality that God approved of.

Because Moses was a warrior, but yet he was meek above all the men on the earth.

That's saying something.

No pushover.

Then in Psalms 76, 9, when God arose to judgment to save all the meek of the earth, Shila.

So it would behoove us today to make sure we were we remain in a meek disposition.

Slow to speak.

Slow to speak.

Then of course we get the word humble.

The word humble means of a low degree.

You know, we are to prefer our others above ourselves.

The pastors were not on top, he's on the bottom.

There is no top in the ministry.

You're down at the foundation.

And all the weight's on you.

Just the opposite of religion.

It means to be of low degree, not a haughty person.

Do you know anybody is haughty?

We're probably thinking of somebody right about now, but that means not to show oneself above others.

Philippians 2, 3.

We need to be careful about how we conduct ourselves on life's journey.

Because God is watching.

If we want to be promoted in the kingdom of God, we need to develop these qualities that come to us only by the Holy Spirit.

Because man does not have these characteristics within himself, it comes from the man, Jesus.

He's the one that gives us these qualities.

And of course, the fruit of the Spirit is much involved in these characteristics of a godly person.

Right.

Yes, he's still working on us.

Philippians 2, 3 then.

Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory, but in loneliness and of mind, let each other esteem others better than themselves.

If I can read this morning, and so you're better than me.

You're better than me.

We're not better than you.

We might be better than you, but we don't want to come over that way.

We might know the scripture more than you, but we don't want to come over that way.

We want to pick you up and help you understand.

Just the opposite of the way most Christians conduct their life.

These guys in Africa, I tell you, they're sitting there taking notes, this and that, and they're just eating everything up, and we're just giving simple stuff to them, but uh, they're hungry.

So that's part of my assignment and the vision that we have for this ministry.

Now in 3 John chapter 1 and verse 9, yes, Brother Randy, what you said is for Sister Sal back there.

It doesn't apply to me.

Okay.

I wrote to the church, but Demetrius, who loved to have the preeminence among them, received us not.

Do you know anybody that's just arrogant and just love to have the final word?

Just love to be a knot above everybody else.

Like they're starting to call me the most major general apostle.

Now, you know, they've got to take on this stuff that that I don't get flattered by words.

Doesn't mean much.

The proof's in the pudding.

Oh, this this major prophet and this and that, and one thing and another, and they take on these words.

We got them in America too.

But first off, we're believers.

Number one.

So I'm not too impressed with titles and labels.

And I'm sure not impressed by doctoral degrees that's conveyed and haven't studied.

Doesn't mean nothing.

Now I want to be nice today.

If you haven't studied six or eight years, to obtain a doctorate, it's worthless to you.

And it shows up in the way that you conduct yourself and the way that you speak, whether you have intelligence or stupidity.

Now, can I go on, please?

So I've been known to tell it like it is, that's just the way it is with me.

But I don't like it.

Well, maybe you're arrogant.

I get labeled as a smart elic.

Well, go look in the mirror.

Maybe you have got an issue to deal with.

Was it the community that God killed?

God rest him.

I hope it's still rest.

So back to the subject now.

I just proddered you.

Did you get that?

I come and I will remember his deeds which he does, priding against us.

There's nothing worse than a preter.

With malicious words and not content therewith, neither doth he himself receive the brethren and forbid them that would, and cast them out of the church.

What kind of dude is this on the church board, huh?

Man.

So Paul had to deal with these things.

We have the same demons to deal with in this country too.

Now in Galatians chapter 6 and verse 1.

Galatians 6 · chapter mention

Alrighty then.

You like that alrighty then?

I got that off of uh Dumb and Dumber, you know.

Brethren, if if a man be overtaken by in a fault, you which are spiritual restore such a one in the spirit of meekness.

See, I'm talking about meekness and humility.

That lets us know who has the goods and who just wants to kill off the wounded.

Consider yourself lest you be tempted.

So we all are human beings and we have a tendency to do something wrong.

Don't we?

Not me.

Uh just thinking that's wrong.

And Luke chapter 18 and verse 10.

Luke 18 · chapter mention

Let's see if we know anybody like this.

All of our principles are found in the scripture, as you know.

Two men went up to the temple to pray, the one a Pharisee and the other a Republican.

And the Pharisee stood and prayed thus in himself.

God, I thank you.

Years ago, I was uh ministering in the Kenya, and I was just making it funny.

I thought it was funny.

And I said, What do you want us?

Somebody that's that speaks like this.

Our great God die.

And these women started laughing.

They go, You make me laugh.

I accomplished that, didn't I?

There's so much arrogance in the pulpit, it's just sickening.

It isn't real.

You know what a hypocrite is?

An actor.

Go down to Branson, you can see the actors there.

Well, that's what they do.

They're acting.

But they take on their characteristics and they they act that way all the time, 24-7.

Like those guys imitated the Beatles.

They talk like them, act like them, look like them 24-7.

They took on another demeanor.

That's dangerous.

If we're going to take on any demeanor, let's take on the demeanor of Christ.

Can I have an amen?

That's what we need.

That's the goal.

He's working on us.

But these two dudes went up to pray.

And this Pharisee stood and he prayed thus with himself.

Self-righteousness, uh-uh.

That's pride.

God, I thank you that I'm not like the other men are.

Extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this Republican.

I fast twice a week, I give tithes of all I possess.

He was a spiritual dude, wasn't he?

Doesn't mean a thing.

Now I didn't mention Democrats.

I'm nice today.

Now, another church renamed the Democrats.

Should I tell you what it is?

No, I can't do that.

You can ask me after church if you want to really know.

And the the Republican standing afar off would not lift his eyes to heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me, a sinner.

Now he wasn't arrogant and proud, was he?

I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other.

For everyone that exalts himself shall be abased.

He that humbles himself shall be exalted.

That's still in effect today.

There's too much self-exaltation, self-righteousness in the church.

In the church us.

In the ministries.

And if they don't humble themselves on the hand of God, God's going to humble them.

And everything caves in.

Because the Lord will not tolerate that very long.

He gives people space to repent.

But then if they refuse, then it's downhill from there.

Well, drop down to verse 13, then.

And the publican standing afar off would not lift up his eyes into heaven.

Smote upon his breast, said, God be mercy for me a sinner.

Alright, I read that.

And so he uh went to his house justified, did he not?

And the other one, well, it was crispy critter time.

Then in Matthew chapter 11 and verse 29, um, I'm I'm hurrying today because we lost an hour.

Matthew 11 · chapter mention

Or did we gain an hour?

I forgot.

We lost one.

So Matthew 11, 29.

Take my yoke upon you and learn of me, for I'm meek.

Everybody saying meek.

Meek and lowly in heart, you'll find rest for your souls.

So Christ was meek.

Never.

He committed all things to the faithful creator, and he won the victory all the way through.

It didn't look like he was winning, but he was because he was meek.

And then in Zechariah 9:9, the Old Testament there.

Zechariah 9:9

Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion, shout, O daughter of Jerusalem, behold, thy king comes unto thee.

He is just and having salvation, lowly and riding upon an ass, and upon the colt the foal of an ass.

And so he was lowly.

He came in to Jerusalem on Palm Sunday, meek and lowly, not riding his uh white charger.

That'll come later.

But the reason the Father God supported him so much was because he was meek and lowly, humble.

Amen.

Then we had the fulfillment of that prophecy.

That was a prophecy there about the Savior.

And then in Matthew 21, verse 5.

Matthew 21:5

See, the Bible actually interprets itself.

Tell you the daughter of Zion, behold, thy king comes into thee meek, and sinned upon the ass that told the fall of an ass.

So he came into Jerusalem as a servant.

And that's why he's king today, because he fulfilled the will of God.

Why?

Meek and humble.

You want to be anointed?

We've got to be meek and humble.

God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.

I need grace.

So we've got to make sure we stay humble.

Amen.

Then in Matthew 23 and verse 12, we're doing good today.

Whosoever shall exalt himself shall be a base.

He that shall humble himself shall be exalted.

So that's up to you.

That's up to me.

To make sure we develop these traits.

It's a choice, but then there's action to the choices.

And we need to make sure we're following through on our choices.

Are we self-exalted or are we meet?

A self-exalted person really is one that puffs himself up.

But God resists that person.

Humble person, so God will uh God will make you the head and not the tail.

If you're humble and meek.

So the only way really to be right with God is to humble ourselves.

We have to bow the knee to God and make Christ the Lord of our life.

Let's stand up this morning.

Praise the Lord.

Short sermon today.

And I hope all of us today really we've bowed the knee.

Not to Baal, but to Christ.

That means spirit, soul, and body.

We've given all to His Lordship.

Have you done that?

Then remain that way.

And God will be sure He'll help us to be meek and humble and pleasing in His sight.

Praise the Lord.

Father, we deliver this message today the best we could today.

May you take it to the hearts of the saints today.

And I know you will help us to stay meek and humble in Jesus' name.
