  1. You're listening to a message to go from Acts Church.

  2. We hope this message will light up your day.

  3. Let's get into today's message, okay? And the title of

  4. today's message is Revival Starts in Our Hearts. Okay, revival

  5. starts in our hearts. Turn to the person next to

  6. you and tell them, revival starts with your heart. Yeah,

  7. it starts with your heart, yeah? Okay. I just sense

  8. that today's message is going to be prophetic. Yeah, it's

  9. prophetic because as I've been praying for ex-charas in this season,

  10. God has imparted this word to me about the book

  11. of Nehemiah. And in fact, this was one of the

  12. first scriptures that I actually shared to our local SPO. Yeah,

  13. I shared this with our local SPO last week about,

  14. you know, where is God leading us as a church?

  15. And how do we position ourselves? And I feel like

  16. it's just important that as a church, you know, I'm

  17. looking around the faces that we have here. You guys

  18. have been with us for a while now. In fact,

  19. you've been calling Charas your home. You've been serving with us.

  20. Thank you for the privilege to do life with us. Yeah.

  21. And I just felt that it's important that we, that

  22. I impart this word as a church so that you

  23. know where we are heading together and how can we

  24. build God's house together. Yeah. So, If you're not familiar

  25. with the book of Nehemiah, or in fact, it was

  26. one of the themes for our church some years back.

  27. It's all about how God caused a growth to take place.

  28. Yeah.

  29. Yeah. how God caused a rebuilding to take place. And

  30. he was not just so caught up with the physical

  31. structure or the numbers that came their way, but it

  32. was a lot more than that, yeah? He was actually

  33. rebuilding a people that would know him, not just know, okay,

  34. there's a God or Jesus, but know him for themselves

  35. as a personal Lord and Saviour, being able to listen

  36. to him and to be able to live for him, yeah? So,

  37. you know, when we read this book of Nehemiah, to

  38. give you a bit of a context, it's a place

  39. where Jerusalem was broken, right? It was not at a

  40. nice place. The walls had been destroyed. The gates were burned.

  41. People were very vulnerable. They were looking for answers, yeah?

  42. And so then we have Nehemiah who comes and he

  43. notices the condition of Jerusalem. He notices what is going on.

  44. And what I find interesting about Nehemiah is that he

  45. did not just get so caught up like, okay, come,

  46. let's start getting things and let's build the bricks and

  47. the walls. That was not the first thing that he did.

  48. Yeah.

  49. The first thing that he actually did was prayer. And

  50. that is found in the very first chapter of Book

  51. of Nehemiah. Yeah. So let's just read a couple of

  52. scriptures here. Right. Um, In the book of Nehemiah, we

  53. can start with chapter 1, verses 4. Okay, this is

  54. what Nehemiah says when he prays for his people. He

  55. says in verse 4, So it was, when I heard

  56. these words, when I sat down and wept and mourned

  57. for many days, I was fasting and praying before the

  58. God of heaven. And if you can just take time

  59. to notice the words that I hear, right? It was

  60. not just a, God, just do it. you know, but

  61. he was mourning. Mourning, you mourn when you are sorrowful

  62. of something that you have lost, right? And that is

  63. what broke his heart. Why? I mean, God, we are

  64. in this place of brokenness. We're in this place of need.

  65. So you can imagine the kind of burden that God

  66. had placed in his heart to say those prayers, yeah?

  67. And then it goes on saying that he actually fasted

  68. and prayed. And we all know as believers that fasting

  69. is a very important or significant part of our faith

  70. because we are setting aside the time and devotion to

  71. seek the Lord, right? And that is exactly what he did.

  72. And then we are talking about this guy who is

  73. doing all this in the midst of the need. It's like,

  74. you know, you see a house tumbling down, but instead

  75. of fixing that, he's first praying, he's first fasting, yeah?

  76. And that speaks a lot about him as a person.

  77. Then it goes on in verses 11 of the same chapter.

  78. It is prayer to God. This was his devotion, right?

  79. And so when we speak about prayer... I think it's

  80. important that sometimes we use the word prayer very loosely,

  81. you know, where it is a communication with God, but

  82. what kind of a posture are we coming before Him?

  83. Sometimes we can get so caught up with my list. God,

  84. I want this, this, this to be done, right? And

  85. so it becomes like a very, they say, luakan prasaan, right?

  86. You're trying to just express your feeling, your emotion, which

  87. is good, which is fine. That is the God that

  88. we have as our Abba Father. We pour our heart

  89. out to Him. But could we also come to a

  90. posture of, God, what is it that you want me

  91. to do? I see the need that is around me.

  92. I see the brokenness. But what is it that you

  93. want me to do? That is true devotion, yeah? Yeah.

  94. And in fact, in that prayer, he says, God, this

  95. servant of God desires to fear your name. Fear comes

  96. with reverence, right? Fear comes with honour. And that is

  97. what he wanted to do when he said that prayer.

  98. And he asked for mercy. Yeah, he asked for mercy.

  99. So what I'd like us to glean on from this

  100. scripture is the whole posture of prayer when we come

  101. before him. Nehemiah sees the brokenness of Jerusalem. It broke

  102. his heart. He did not immediately start making plans like, okay, come,

  103. let's do this or let's do that. No, he was

  104. not doing all that. But he turned to God first, yeah?

  105. His burden became a prayer. He confessed. He remembers God's promises.

  106. And then he asked God for favor. He seeked God's direction.

  107. And then something happens, yeah? Prayer moved Nehemiah from simply

  108. seeing the problem to participating in God's solution. Yeah, I'm

  109. just going to repeat this. Prayer moved Nehemiah because that's

  110. the first thing he did, right? He prayed. And by

  111. doing that, he saw the problem through the lens of God.

  112. And he could see that, okay, this is what God

  113. wanted to do, the solution.

  114. Yeah?

  115. And let's take a step back and think about our

  116. prayer life as well How do we pray? How do

  117. we ask the Lord? God, what is your solution? I

  118. think I know that this can be done, right? But

  119. that's my human knowledge. That's my understanding. But God, do

  120. you have a different plan? Because in most times, you'd

  121. be surprised how God has a different plan. Because that

  122. is who God is. We can never surpass Him. We

  123. can never understand Him truly because He is so big.

  124. He is everlasting. He's eternity. Whatever it looks like for

  125. us tomorrow, it's like, okay, God, let it happen tomorrow.

  126. But for him, he sees it beyond that. Yeah? And

  127. that is why Nehemiah had to come to that place

  128. and see, ask the Lord to give him the lens

  129. to see the surrounding through God's lens. Yeah? And this

  130. is when the rebuilding began. Yeah? This is when the

  131. rebuilding began. Now, the next thing that we can see

  132. here in this scripture is that prayer also does not

  133. replace the action. Yeah, sometimes we can get so caught

  134. up with the prayer, prayer, prayer, but the action is

  135. not taken. Yeah, the action is not taken. But when

  136. Nehemiah prayed, Nehemiah also moved. One of the things that

  137. he did, if you read on in chapter 2, when

  138. you have the time, You can get into this book

  139. a little bit deeper. He went and asked the king

  140. for permission. He asked for letters. He asked for timber.

  141. He was traveling around Jerusalem to see the place. He

  142. was inspecting the walls and what was broken. He spoke

  143. to the people to know what's going on. After doing

  144. all of that, eventually he said, okay, come, let's rebuild

  145. the wall of Jerusalem. So what does prayer do? Prayer

  146. leads to participation. Yeah, that is what's the next thing

  147. that has to happen. When you keep praying and when

  148. you don't do something, that is when we can come

  149. to a place of complacency. Yeah, or we then begin

  150. to doubt. We then can then to overthink, God, I'm praying,

  151. but nothing happening, right? But prayer is with action. And

  152. what action? Action that God wants you to take. And

  153. I believe that Nehemiah could do all of this because

  154. he was moved. Everyone he spoke to, everywhere he went to,

  155. God was leading him. God was guiding him. And that

  156. is why he knew at one point of that stage that, okay,

  157. now it's time to rebuild. So Nehemiah did not use

  158. prayer as an excuse for, okay, I think we should

  159. pause and not do anything anymore. He prayed and then

  160. He acted. Yeah, He prayed and He acted. So my

  161. call for all of us this morning is, what is

  162. God calling you to put into action today? There could

  163. be different things that you're praying for. Yeah? But is

  164. there something that God wants you to also actively do?

  165. And this doing doesn't necessarily mean like big, great steps

  166. that you may need to take. But it could be

  167. a small step. Yeah, a step of faith that He

  168. wants you to take. Surrendering is a step of faith

  169. as well, or an action. Don't you know that?

  170. Right?

  171. So when you pray, but you're still holding on to

  172. some things, then how is God going to move? Maybe

  173. He's telling you, you know what? Can you surrender? Surrender

  174. is an action. Surrender is a work, right? So is

  175. it surrender? Is it talking to someone about it? Because

  176. you've been journeying alone for a long time, and then

  177. God is saying, why don't you pray with someone about this?

  178. Is it going somewhere or answering a call? What is it?

  179. And if I can go on a little bit further now,

  180. what is it that God may be calling you to

  181. do to rebuild His house? Because we all have a

  182. part to play, right? We all have parts because one

  183. person can never build the entire. In fact, Nehemiah alone

  184. could not do it, though he's the one who started it.

  185. with prayer, with devotion. But he needed the whole community

  186. to come together. Yeah? And so, as you are praying

  187. for X Church, as you are praying for X Church,

  188. is there something that God may be imparting in your heart?

  189. Because you'll never know if you actually pray first. You'll

  190. never know if you ask the Lord, God, what is

  191. my portion in this church? I've been coming for a while.

  192. And is there a part that I can rebuild? Is

  193. there a part that I can maybe repair or fix

  194. or add on? Because we need each one of us

  195. to be able to put things in action. So what

  196. is it that God is calling you today? If it's

  197. not exactly for the house of God, in your families,

  198. in your communities, in your workplace, in your school, what

  199. is the role that God is calling you to play?

  200. An idle man is a devil's workshop. That's what we

  201. always hear, right? The saying, And the same thing can

  202. happen when we don't do something, if we're just idle

  203. about something, right? And that is why we've got to

  204. start moving. Amen? Now, the book continues on when you

  205. read the book of Nehemiah. Now, Nehemiah 3, you will

  206. see that they actually build together, right? They build together.

  207. So this whole chapter, you'll notice the word repair and

  208. build being repeated, right? Okay, so we can see a

  209. couple of scriptures here from verses 1 of chapter 3.

  210. And then verses 2, you can see another family next

  211. to Eliasep, the man of Jericho, built. And next to them, Zakur,

  212. the son of Imri, built. So it goes on and on, yeah?

  213. The different, different names. And these are families. These are

  214. different tribes. And they all had a part to play.

  215. And it's a very beautiful picture. I highly encourage you

  216. to read. You'll see that there's a pattern. That everyone

  217. kind of, kind of know that, okay, this is what

  218. I need to repair. This is what I need to build.

  219. It was not something that Nehemiah had to exactly tell

  220. them to do because imparted the prayer, imparted the vision.

  221. But because they were all in one accord, there was

  222. such unity, and they all knew that we have a

  223. part to play, they went forth and started doing that.

  224. And we all know, of course, the good news is

  225. that it was built at the end of the day.

  226. All the walls were built. But it first took all

  227. of them to come together. Family after family, they repaired

  228. the portions of the walls. Everyone had a part to play.

  229. Some repaired the gates, some looked at sections, some looked

  230. at different homes, different people, different responsibilities. There was one wall,

  231. one purpose, one God, ultimately. So God often rebuilds through

  232. people who are willing to build their portion faithfully. God

  233. often uses people who are willing to build their portion faithfully.

  234. When we say their portion, it could be that one

  235. part that God is calling you to do. It could

  236. be a ministry, ex-kids, and you are faithfully doing that.

  237. It could be ex-hosts and you're faithfully doing that. Whatever

  238. ministry it is, whatever calling that God has in your life,

  239. Are you building it faithfully? Meaning we're not just, okay,

  240. I build a little bit and then I go there

  241. and I go here. What's going to happen? The wall

  242. is just going to be halfway through, right? The gate

  243. is going to be, there's a gate, but there's no lock.

  244. People can come in, right? Everything is just halfway through.

  245. Or I just go with how I feel. I feel

  246. like I want to do this today.

  247. I do.

  248. After a while, okay, let me change another thing. Do this,

  249. do that, a little bit of here and there. How

  250. do you think it's going to look like, the building itself?

  251. It's going to be just halfway through. And none of

  252. us want halfway through things. We want things to be completed, right?

  253. We want something to be done, you know? And the

  254. same thing is with rebuilding as well. When we start,

  255. we see it through until the end. Until God has

  256. the next thing for us. Until the next plan comes

  257. our way, yeah? It takes a lot of perseverance, of course.

  258. You think these guys build these walls in a night

  259. or a week? I don't think so. It took so

  260. many years, so many of hours, of time, of energy,

  261. of sacrifice. Was it worth it at the end of

  262. the day? Definitely. Because it was the plan of God. Right?

  263. And they went all the way through. And so my

  264. encouragement for all of us today is if you're building something,

  265. could you stick through until the end? Until you build it.

  266. Until there's a full structure to it.

  267. Yeah?

  268. Yeah. And if you're not building something yet, would you

  269. want to say yes to something that God is calling you?

  270. And like I said, that building can come in your

  271. own capacity in how God is calling you. But the

  272. key here is not just to start and live it,

  273. but to do it together. And that is why the

  274. key message you'll see in this whole chapter as you

  275. read it, they all had a part to play. That's

  276. the beautiful picture if you can just envision with me.

  277. Every family had a wall that they are focusing on.

  278. So every other day they are there and they are

  279. fixing something. They are building something. And at the end

  280. of the day, when you see the whole full structure,

  281. it was not just a Nehemiah's plan, but it was

  282. the whole Jerusalem that played a part to it. So

  283. building together is beautiful. Ask this question, Lord, what is

  284. my portion? What is my portion in my family? What

  285. is my portion in my church? What is my portion

  286. in my workplace, in my community? What is it that

  287. you can contribute? What is it that I can do?

  288. If you can only ask that question, you'll be amazed

  289. with what God tells you. Yeah, try that. Make that

  290. part of your devotion as you pray. And of course,

  291. particularly when we talk about building the church, what is

  292. that portion that you can contribute, right? Now, the next

  293. thing that we can see here, are we catching something, church? Yeah, right?

  294. When you read chapter 4, so I'm just bringing you

  295. through the book, yeah? But if you can read through

  296. it in more detail, that would be great, yeah? Now,

  297. in my chapter 4, you'll realize that You know, they

  298. had to build with one hand and they had to

  299. watch with the other. Because as we try to do

  300. God's will, as we try to build God's house, who's

  301. that one guy who's not going to be happy? There's

  302. this one fella, right, who's going to try to bring

  303. down the wall. People are going to start laughing at

  304. you and thinking, hey, what are you actually doing? Is

  305. it worth it? Is it worth your time? Right? Is

  306. it worth your energy? And that's exactly what happened to

  307. these people. So when you read Nehemiah chapter 4, yeah,

    Nehemiah 4 chapter mention

  308. verses 1, it says, But it so happened when Sanbalat

  309. heard that we were rebuilding the wall, he was furious

  310. and very indignant and mocked the Jews. That's exactly what

  311. these people were going through. In the midst of the

  312. tiredness and the sun, they're building, and then we have

  313. these people who are mocking them. the Jews here, right?

  314. And he spoke before his brethren and the army of

  315. Samaria and said, what are these feeble Jews doing? Will

  316. they fortify themselves? Will they offer sacrifices? Will they complete

  317. it in a day? Will they revive the stones from

  318. the hips of rubbish? Stones that are burned. So the doubt, right,

  319. that comes in, the criticism that comes in, all those

  320. words that they had to hear. And then you can

  321. read on the different contaminations that they were receiving. And

  322. then if you go on, you'll see in verses 9

  323. of the same chapter. Nevertheless, we made our prayer to God.

  324. And because of them, we set a watch against them

  325. day and night. So were they moved? I'm pretty sure

  326. as humans, they would have been emotional, right? You know, like, okay,

  327. why these people are talking? Actually, can we build it?

  328. They could have gone back to Nehemiah and said, okay,

  329. are we doing the right thing? People are mocking us.

  330. People are questioning us, right? I'm sure there was that

  331. whole chaos that were going on. But you know what?

  332. They had to come back to a place and say, nevertheless,

  333. I will still watch and build. Yes. And to me,

  334. this is something very powerful because they didn't just also

  335. stop doing what they're doing. They were still building because

  336. they knew they had a task to do. They had

  337. bricks to put on. They had doors to build. They

  338. had repairs to do. But they were not just building

  339. and getting caught up with their own world, but they

  340. were also watching. What's the next step that the enemy

  341. might be doing? Yeah. Yeah. So they were very discerning

  342. as well. And that is why I believe that the

  343. gift of discernment is very important for us in our faith.

  344. As we keep serving, as we keep building people, right?

  345. As we do whatever God has called us to do,

  346. can we also be discerning of the voices that we

  347. tend to hear? Because it can come in the most

  348. deceiving ways, right? That is exactly how Eve met the serpent.

  349. In the most, what was the words that he told her?

  350. that you will be able to be like God. He

  351. didn't say that, you know, God is not good. He

  352. said you'll be like God. And that is how deceiving

  353. the voice of the enemy can be if you're not cautious.

  354. And more and more in the times that we are

  355. living in church, I can't stress this enough, you know,

  356. that we've got to be more cautious. Let's not just

  357. live in our own wonderland, thinking that it's always going

  358. to be good. And well, yes, there are good days

  359. with God. The Word of God reminds us that we've

  360. got to also put on the armour of God. We've

  361. got to always be ready, especially if you're walking in

  362. the ways of God. Especially when there are days you're saying, God,

  363. I want to listen to you more. I want to

  364. draw closer with you. You know what's the next thing

  365. that will come? Another voice that will come your way. Yeah,

  366. so when we say yes to the Lord, it doesn't

  367. mean it's going to be always good. But you know what?

  368. We'll have that superpower where we can have the Holy

  369. Spirit with us, which no one else who don't believe

  370. yet may not have. But we have it, right? We

  371. have it. And that is something that we've got to

  372. keep asking the Lord, keep drawing closer with Him, yeah?

  373. So they built and they watched. They didn't stop building

  374. because there were oppositions, but they remained alert. And they

  375. were also not building carelessly, thinking, okay, I have to

  376. do it fast because these guys are here to attack. No,

  377. they were not doing that. They were still doing things

  378. the right way till there was a finishing end to

  379. the things. But they kept building. They remained alert. In

  380. chapter 4, verses 17, it says here, Those who built

  381. on the wall and those who carried burdens loaded themselves

  382. so that with one hand, they worked at construction and

  383. with the other, they held a weapon. Wow, they could

  384. have been so strong. So they were building, they were whatever,

  385. they're holding hammer or putting on the bricks. And then

  386. another hand, they had like a sword with them. They

  387. were just ready. Whenever the enemy comes, they know what

  388. to do. Every one of the builders had his sword

  389. girded at his side as he built. And the one

  390. who sounded the trumpet was beside me. So there was

  391. always one person who is being in the watch of

  392. what's going on. Then I say to the nobles, the

  393. rulers and the rest of the people, the work is

  394. great and extensive and we are separated far from one

  395. another on the wall. Whenever you hear the sound of

  396. the trumpet rally to us there, our God will fight

  397. for us. Who will fight for us? Our God will

  398. fight for us. So we labored in the work and

  399. half of the men held the spears from daybreak until

  400. the stars appeared. At the same time, I also say

  401. to the people, let each man... and his servant stay

  402. at night in Jerusalem, that they may be our guard

  403. by night and a working party by day. So neither I,

  404. my brethren, my servants, nor the man of the guard

  405. who followed me took off our clothes except that everyone

  406. took them off for washing. So they were just so guarded,

  407. so ready on what's going on, day and night. Yeah,

  408. day and night. So this is a very powerful principle

  409. that we need to catch. We keep building, but we

  410. also stay watchful. We pray, but we also prepare. Yeah.

  411. We trust God, but we don't become callous.

  412. Yeah.

  413. And this sometimes happens when we are very comfortable among

  414. believers in Christ. Because, you know, everyone in church, if

  415. you turn to each other, all are nice people. They're

  416. all so nice, they're all so kind, they're so loving,

  417. so encouraging, right? But the thing is, sometimes when we

  418. are just surrounded with each one of us, we forget

  419. that there's another world out there. There's another group of people.

  420. You know, there are people who are unbelieving. There are

  421. people who are just going to be mocking you for

  422. your faith. I mean, this is not new in some

  423. parts of the world. It's already happening to many people

  424. who are persecuted for their faith. But we are blessed when,

  425. you know, we don't encounter those kind of struggles. But

  426. that does not mean that we just walk, you know,

  427. not discerning of what's happening. Yeah. And that is why

  428. we need to keep praying. We need to keep being watchful.

  429. And I'm grateful that Auntie Lisa, we started off our

  430. intercessory prayer last week. And a big part of our

  431. prayer is to pray for extras. That is something that

  432. we felt that there's an urgency, there's a need for us.

  433. And a lot of our prayer is actually to pray

  434. against the works of the enemy. Because the moment we

  435. start doing some of this, right, when we keep praying

  436. for the ground, when we try to ask God's guidance

  437. to build our church, enemy will always have this way

  438. to shake us, right? And we've got to be very cautious.

  439. We have to keep each other in prayer. We've got

  440. to ask for God's covering, yeah? So let's keep being watchful.

  441. Let's keep preparing ourselves and let's not become callous believers. Yeah,

  442. because the Word of God tells us to be wise

  443. as a serpent, right? Yeah, we've got to be able

  444. to be wise, you know, when we look to the Lord.

  445. And that is why when we read Nehemiah chapter 4,

    Nehemiah 4 chapter mention

  446. it says, nevertheless, we made our prayer to our God

  447. and because of them, we set a watch against them

  448. day and night.

  449. Amen?

  450. Day and night. So what is it, church, that you

  451. are building? Could you also be able to be watchful

  452. in what you're doing? Right? Are we watchful enough that

  453. when you hear a certain voice, can you actually tell

  454. that this is not from the Lord? What does it

  455. take to be able to discern that?

  456. Yeah?

  457. Can I also be discerning to know that this is

  458. the voice of the Lord? Because there are times when

  459. sometimes you can just miss out. Right? I was just

  460. sharing with some of them recently. You know, it's been

  461. something that I've been encountering. Just three o'clock or four

  462. o'clock in the morning, sometimes I'll just hear my name, Gloria.

  463. It's quite strange. When I go to my sister's room,

  464. she's deeply sleeping. So it's not her calling me. So

  465. then I felt that the Holy Spirit was just waking

  466. me up in some of those nights. And when I

  467. just have to sit down and pray, and that's exactly

  468. what I did. And, you know, those nights when I prayed,

  469. the next day, there's something that I had to do.

  470. Something that came my way. Someone called and said, you know,

  471. I'm going through this. I need some prayer. And you know,

  472. that is how God prepares you sometimes. You are just filled, okay?

  473. God speaks to you at that moment. And when the

  474. next thing or next task that God gives you, you

  475. are prepared. You are ready. You are watchful. And you

  476. just do it.

  477. Yeah?

  478. Are there times that sometimes I think, oh, it's no one.

  479. And I try to sleep off. Yes, I miss that. Right?

  480. And then I wake up, I realize, hey, no, I

  481. shouldn't have.

  482. Yeah?

  483. Yep. And I think that came because I was asking God,

  484. I just want more with you. I want to be

  485. able to hear your heartbeat. I want to know what

  486. breaks your heart. God, break my heart. And that's exactly

  487. what He has been doing to me. And can I

  488. believe that for you as well, Church? Because if we

  489. are believers, if we have said yes to the Lord,

  490. can we go all out for Him? Because it's either

  491. you're fully in or you're fully out. If we remain

  492. as Christians as just I just come, I just serve.

  493. You're not going to feel the fullness of God. Don't

  494. you think so? Right? I'm just going to know, okay,

  495. this is who God is. I remember hearing this somewhere.

  496. When you hear the name of God, what's the first

  497. image or first thing that comes to your mind? That

  498. is exactly what it shows your relationship with God. Yeah?

  499. I mean, nothing wrong to think of Him as our

  500. provider and all of that. But is He even more

  501. personal than that? A God who, even if He did

  502. not answer those prayers, I still adore Him. I still

  503. have my reverence with Him.

  504. Yeah?

  505. Can we desire that as a church? Can we desire

  506. that as children of God to go deeper? Yeah? Let's

  507. not remain on the shallows. Let's not just, you know,

  508. come by each day. And days go by so fast.

  509. I feel like time just goes on and on. Age

  510. catches up. Things come in. You know, priorities comes in

  511. in life. And if you don't just take a stop

  512. check and say, God, where am I in my faith?

  513. Am I going deeper with you? Are my roots rooted

  514. in you? Until and unless we ask the Lord these questions,

  515. we are just going to remain. And that is why

  516. they say the lukewarm believers, right? We just go with

  517. whatever comes. Or I know this God because this person

  518. told me this is who God is. But have I

  519. fully experienced my God as a healer, my God who saves,

  520. my God who is able to move mountains? Yeah, can

  521. I do all this? It all comes with your desire first. Right?

  522. And that is why when we go back to the

  523. heart of Nehemiah, it all starts with prayer. How is

  524. your personal altar with the Lord? Right? Pastor Kenneth was

  525. just challenging our leaders during Psalms the other day. Nothing

  526. means anything. Your titles as leaders doesn't mean anything if

  527. you can't even have your devotion. Because then who are

  528. you serving? Right? Are you serving, you know, the people

  529. that are coming? Right? It means nothing if we can't

  530. even seek the Lord. And seeking the Lord shouldn't just

  531. be a choice. It shouldn't just be, okay, I feel

  532. better this morning and therefore I'm going to pray. No,

  533. it doesn't work that way. It has to be a devotion.

  534. Right?

  535. And that is why we have all these prophets in

  536. the Bible. They were able to encounter God because they

  537. had that right from the start. They had that in place.

  538. And that is why they could encounter. Sometimes we go, wow, Moses. Wow, Abraham.

  539. But where did it all start? They were just ordinary people.

  540. But because they had the devotion with the Lord, God

  541. used ordinary people. God can use you and me. If

  542. only we can set certain things right. What are those

  543. things that you need to set right in your lives? Priorities?

  544. Your choices? The time you go to bed? the people

  545. you speak to. Sometimes it goes back to all these basics.

  546. We think that, okay, it's just devotion. But everything else

  547. you do is a ripple effect to how you choose

  548. to wake up and seek God. It's as simple as, okay,

  549. I think I'm going to sleep earlier so that I

  550. can wake up. It can be as simple as that.

  551. I am not going to scroll my phone. I'm going

  552. to open the Bible. It's just simple choices, guys. It's

  553. not like you need to make big critical decisions. It's

  554. simple choices that you make and then you're going to

  555. experience the fullness of it. God gives us a free will.

  556. But at the end of the day, we've got to

  557. face those consequences. We heard that at WCC yesterday. The

  558. consequences of every decision that we make. And the same

  559. thing is with our faith as well. How deep do

  560. we go with the Lord? Amen? So I just want

  561. to encourage us, Church, that, you know, the people in

  562. Jerusalem could experience all that they could experience because they

  563. came to that portion, because there was unity, because all

  564. of them asked that question, what is my portion? And

  565. they faithfully built that, right? And then what we can

  566. see here is, what was God trying to do in them?

  567. I mean, if God wanted to, He could have built

  568. those walls by Himself. He's great and mighty, right? He

  569. could just do it overnight. But what was God trying

  570. to do here was that He was looking for a

  571. deeper hunger for God's Word. He was not big about

  572. rebuilding the walls, but He was interested in rebuilding their hearts.

  573. How many of us need to rebuild our hearts? Right? And...

  574. There's nothing wrong to ask those questions because every day

  575. is a choice to follow Jesus. Do you know that?

  576. Right?

  577. We sing that in Sunday school. I have decided to

  578. follow Jesus. No turning back. But why do we keep

  579. singing it? Because it's a choice that we've got to

  580. make every other time because you can also follow other things,

  581. other opinions, other people in your lives if you're not careful. Right? Right?

  582. And can we ask that question? God, does my heart

  583. need some rebuilding? Maybe I'm fine, but I need a

  584. little bit of repair here and there. I need a

  585. little bit of confession, a little bit of forgiveness. What

  586. is it? Maybe there are disappointments that are still there

  587. and God wants to set you free from those because

  588. that's when true rebuilding can happen. Yeah? So let's look

  589. at Nehemiah chapter 8. So if you read on, you'll see,

    Nehemiah 8 chapter mention

  590. you know, Nehemiah chapter 5, there's all this oppression that

    Nehemiah 5 chapter mention

  591. Nehemiah goes through and the people, because of what the

  592. enemy was trying to do, they were unhappy of what's

  593. going on. And then there was conspiracy, right? But they

  594. were able to overcome all that because they were watchful.

  595. They were building, they were watchful, right? And then when

  596. you read chapter 6 towards the end, Okay, we see

  597. that the wall was completed. Okay, that was something that

  598. they were rejoicing. And then we can see in verses

  599. 8 is where the true revival happens. It is not

  600. so much of that, okay, we are done with the

  601. walls and therefore let's go back. But God was even

  602. more interested in what happened in chapter 8 when Ezra

  603. reads the law. Let's look at chapter 8 verses 1

  604. to 5. Now all the people gathered together as one

  605. man in the open square that there was in front

  606. of the water gate and they told Ezra the scribe

  607. to bring the book of the law of Moses, which

  608. the Lord had commanded Israel. So Ezra the priest brought

  609. the law before the assembly of men and women and

  610. all who could hear with understanding on the first day

  611. of the seventh month. Then he read from it in

  612. the open square that was in front of the water

  613. gate from morning until midday. Before the men and women

  614. and those who could understand. And the ears of all

  615. the people were attentive. Are all your ears attentive? Yes?

  616. I hope. Okay? Right? That was exactly what was going on. Nehemiah,

  617. I mean, Ezra was just reading. They were so attentive.

  618. He was not just reading for 40 minutes. Your sermon

  619. is only 40 minutes. They were reading it from morning,

  620. the whole day, till midday. Yeah? And they were all

  621. attentive the whole time. So Ezra, the scribe, stood on

  622. a platform of wood, which they had made for the purpose.

  623. And beside him at it, At his right hand stood Mattiah, Shema, Ananiah, Urijiah. Okay,

  624. all these names. I'm not going to try to pronounce.

  625. Verses 5. And Ezra opened the book in the sight

  626. of all the people, for he was standing above all

  627. the people. And when he opened it, all of them

  628. stood up. Verse 6. And Ezra blessed the Lord, the

  629. great God, and all the people answered, Amen, Amen, which

  630. lifting up their hands. And they bowed with their heads

  631. and worshipped the Lord with their faces to the ground.

  632. And you can see in verses 8, it says, And

  633. they read distinctly from the book of the law of

  634. God and they gave the sense and helped them to

  635. understand the reading. And verses 9, And Nehemiah was the governor.

  636. Ezra the priest and scribe and the Levites who taught

  637. the people said to all the people, This day is

  638. holy to the Lord your God. Do not mourn nor weep.

  639. For all the people wept and when they heard the

  640. words of the Lord. There's a lot to glean on

  641. from this scripture. So the first thing we can see

  642. as we read is that they were attentive.

  643. Right?

  644. And there was a greater unity because they built together.

  645. They built the walls. Things were completed and therefore they're here. Okay, come,

  646. let's come together. Right? And they came. Ezra read. They

  647. were attentive. And we can see time and time in

  648. the scriptures when how the people responded. It goes back

  649. to the respond. We can give a powerful word. We

  650. can read the entire Bible out. But if the receiving

  651. end does not receive, and that is why church, we

  652. always say, tell your amens. respond to the word of God.

  653. You're not responding to the speaker. You're responding to God's word.

  654. And when you say amen, you're saying, God, this is

  655. for me. I'm declaring it all over my life. It's

  656. a habit, guys. It's a habit that we need to cultivate,

  657. especially if you're not a, if you're a quieter person, right?

  658. It's something that we need to keep doing to get

  659. used to, yeah? And this is exactly what they did.

  660. They said amen, amen. They lifted up their hands. They

  661. bowed their heads. They worshipped the Lord. How many of

  662. us can respond like that to God's Word? We're talking

  663. about the Bible. Of course, at that time, it was

  664. called the Law of Moses. They only had that number

  665. of books. But we have the old book of the Bible,

  666. even the New Testament, meaning the complete, everything, right? And

  667. every time they heard a scripture, they were worshipping. They

  668. were not just worshipping to music. We are so used

  669. to worshipping to music. When there's a shaleen singing, when

  670. there's a keyboard, when there's a guitar, okay, then I

  671. can lift my hands. But can we also lift hands

  672. to the Word of God? When you read, can you

  673. raise your hands to God? Because it's alive, it's powerful, right?

  674. It is alive. And that is exactly what they were doing.

  675. They lifted up their hands. And then as you read on,

  676. you'll see that Nehemiah tells them, do not mourn because

  677. this is the day of God. So meaning you can

  678. imagine the kind of emotions that these people were having.

  679. They were mourning because the word of God brought such

  680. conviction in them. They could feel like, oh, okay, these

  681. are things I need to let go of. These are

  682. things that I need to surrender. These are things I

  683. don't want anymore in my life. And so that's why

  684. they were weeping. They were crying. Imagine responding to God's

  685. word in that way, right? And that is when the

  686. rebuilding was happening in the hearts of the people, when

  687. they could cry out to God, where they can go

  688. sorrowfully on their knees and say, God, it's not my way,

  689. but your will be done. God, break my heart for

  690. what breaks yours, right? They came to that place. God's

  691. word showed them what the wall could not do, in fact. Right?

  692. Because here we are, we have all the walls built,

  693. everything is completed. We overcame whatever oppression the enemy brought us.

  694. But there was still such a longings that God had

  695. to fill. And God had to show them, my job

  696. is not done. My job is not just the walls,

  697. but my job is first your heart. What's happening within you?

  698. Because they could be caught up with pride at the

  699. end of the day when everything else was sorted, right?

  700. But God had to bring them back to a position

  701. of who is the one that made this possible. Yeah?

  702. The Word of God reveals the condition of their hearts.

  703. Yeah?

  704. Is the Word of God revealing the condition of your

  705. hearts this morning? We need to have a heart check.

  706. Some people are very naturally reflective. They think about what's

  707. going on. They're self-aware. But not everyone is such. And

  708. that is why we need the Word of God to

  709. bring those convictions, to reveal things that sometimes you may

  710. not know what's going on in your heart because years

  711. have passed by. Or you may be caught up with

  712. your own desires and ambitions. But when you come back

  713. to God's Word, you come back to what's the heart

  714. of the matter. What is exactly important? So if I

  715. can ask you today, church, what are you building in

  716. your lives today? Yeah? What are you building? As you're

  717. building your careers, as you're building your families, you know,

  718. as you're building your dreams, your desires, while you're building

  719. all of that, what is God building inside you? Yeah?

  720. What is God building inside you? As you're building your family,

  721. what is imparting in your heart? Right? As you're serving others,

  722. what is it that God is building in you? As

  723. you're waiting for the dream to be achieved, the desire

  724. to be achieved, God can just make that happen in

  725. a split second. But why is it that He allows

  726. us to sometimes wait? Why does He allow us to

  727. come to that posture of surrender? Because He first wants

  728. you to be ready for it. He wants you to

  729. be prepared for it. Yeah? Because it is possible to

  730. have a strong wall, but a weak heart.

  731. Yeah?

  732. Some of the people I know is that when you

  733. look at them, you wouldn't even imagine that they actually

  734. have heart conditions. Right? I mean, people I know of

  735. who have had heart attacks, they are completely well. They're

  736. completely strong in the outside but inside. Yeah? You can

  737. have a successful ministry but a dry soul. You can

  738. be serving every other time but your soul is not filled.

  739. Your cup is always dry. Yeah? You can look so

  740. beautiful in the outside but going for all your skincare

  741. and your workouts, all these good things, but you can

  742. be so neglected inside. Your inside just feels empty. Right?

  743. Your inside just feels the longings. Right?

  744. Right?

  745. And that is why God had to rebuild their hearts.

  746. It was not so much to be filled with that

  747. beautiful wall and buildings that they were able to build

  748. and rebuild. It was not just about that. But God

  749. wanted the people with the right hearts to sit in

  750. those buildings as well. Yeah. And so the same thing

  751. is for us as a church. In this context, as ex-jurors.

  752. As we keep building God's house, as we keep rebuilding

  753. what needs to be built, God first wants to build

  754. what's in your hearts. Each one of you. And that's

  755. the unique God we serve. He is so interested in

  756. every one of you. So maybe sometimes if all our

  757. hearts are still not sorted out, there are many things

  758. that are still not worked out yet. That is why

  759. sometimes things take time. Right? We keep praying for new souls.

  760. We keep praying for new people to come. But are

  761. we faithful with the ones that God has already given us?

  762. Are we already prudent with the time that God has

  763. given to us? We keep asking, God, I've got not

  764. enough time. If only I have more time, I can

  765. do all of these things for you. And God is saying,

  766. what are you doing late at night? Are you waking

  767. up early to pray? It's those things that God wants

  768. to see how you honour first. Your thoughts, you're thinking

  769. about what's going to happen the next five years, where

  770. I want to be. But God is asking us, what

  771. are you doing with your time now? With your talents,

  772. with your gifts? With that little gift that God has,

  773. how can He grow it over the years to bring

  774. you to the next place? So let's not just be

  775. always looking for the next thing, the next shiny thing,

  776. the next future. How about now? How about where God

  777. has positioned you at this very moment? What is your portion?

  778. What is it that you can build? Can I just

  779. invite extreme... Because it goes back to a very personal prayer.

  780. We can do a lot of things as a church.

  781. But what you do every other day is what's going

  782. to contribute to the rebuilding of the church. And that

  783. is exactly what Nehemiah did as well. He had his

  784. own personal altar first. Not caught up with the worries

  785. and the cares of the world, but he first knew

  786. what is important. He looked to the Lord. And then

  787. everyone came. People just came together. And the very fact

  788. that these people, all this list of names that you

  789. see in chapter 3, committed in building was not because

  790. it was only their desire, but God had planted that

  791. in them as well. They answered the call because it

  792. was a big commitment. Right? Right? And God is asking

  793. us today, what is it that you want to commit

  794. to for the work of the Lord? What is important

  795. for you? What is your priority? Yeah? Because the day

  796. that we are going to face the Lord one day,

  797. we're not going to take with us anything that we're

  798. building in this earth. That's reality, yeah? Right? We can, yeah,

  799. enjoy the blessings that God gives us Thank God for that.

  800. But at the same time, let's be watchful. When we

  801. build all of this, am I building my soul? Am
