  1. The Bible is so relevant to today. And in fact,

  2. today's section, it could not be more ordinary.

  3. It's going to talk about ordinary life with an

  4. amazing complexity. But before we get there,

  5. I was reminded of a story this week. And it's

  6. about a Brazilian fisherman. And the Brazilian

  7. fisherman goes out to fish in the morning. He

  8. catches a couple of large fish. He puts them

  9. in the boat. He's coming back. He pulls his boat

  10. up on shore. And his plan is this. He's going

  11. to sell those fish. and take some home and sell

  12. the other ones. But his day is done and it's

  13. mid -morning. Well, as he's pulling his boat

  14. up on shore, there's a businessman there. And

  15. the businessman looks at him and is curious why

  16. he's stopped fishing. So he goes over to him

  17. and he goes, hey, what are you doing? He goes,

  18. well, my day is done. I've caught everything

  19. I need to. I'm just enjoying the boat and the

  20. sun right now. He goes, and then what? He goes,

  21. well, I'll go home from here. He goes, I'll swing

  22. by the market on the way home and I'll drop off

  23. and sell some fish and I'll go home and we'll

  24. have lunch. And I'll play with my kids and maybe

  25. take a nap with my wife at some point and hang

  26. in the hammock. And he goes, we'll play some

  27. music maybe together, maybe later around dinner.

  28. We'll just spend some family time. And he goes,

  29. and then later I might actually go hang out with

  30. the boys tonight. And the businessman goes, well,

  31. why didn't you stay out fishing? He goes, you

  32. could have caught more fish. He goes, then what?

  33. He goes, well, you could sell them and get more

  34. money. He goes, then you could buy another boat.

  35. He goes, so now you would have like a fleet of

  36. boats. He goes, and once you got those boats

  37. and those, you could hire some people. He goes,

  38. you may get to the point where you don't even

  39. have to go fishing. They go fishing for you.

  40. And he goes, well, then what? He goes, well,

  41. once you've built, you know, kind of your fishing

  42. fleet empire, so to speak. He goes, then you

  43. can maybe move out of this area. Maybe you move

  44. to like one of the cities like Rio. Maybe get

  45. yourself like that apartment. Maybe even buy

  46. an apartment complex, depending on how good your

  47. fishing is going. And he goes, you know what?

  48. You could probably can the fish and then you

  49. can reach a whole new market. And he goes, well,

  50. that all sounds good, but then what? He goes,

  51. well, then you could, maybe if your company gets

  52. big enough, you just publicly trade it. He goes,

  53. and so now you'll make so much money off of that,

  54. you don't have to do any of the work. You can

  55. actually hire managers to oversee your business.

  56. And so now you've got more money. You're a king,

  57. essentially. You don't know what to do. And he

  58. goes, well, then what? He goes, well, then you

  59. could buy the house you've always wanted in the

  60. village, and you could spend your day on the

  61. boat. And he goes, isn't that what I'm doing?

  62. I think it summarizes Ecclesiastes for us. Ecclesiastes

  63. is where we've been in the collection on Step

  64. Into the Ring. But in Ecclesiastes, it's the

  65. richest man, the most famous man. It's the guy

  66. that's got the houses. He's got everything that

  67. you go. That's what you should be attaining for.

  68. He's got all of those. And what he says is this.

  69. Then what? Then what? What does it matter? Let

  70. me ask it this way. If you had every success

  71. you ever wanted in the field that you're going

  72. into, if you have your dream scenario, let me

  73. ask you, then what? If you become the best in

  74. your field, if you become the athlete you always

  75. wanted to be, if you become the most recognized

  76. person in that area, if you got the house you

  77. wanted, let me ask you, then what? Because here's

  78. the problem. It was never designed to carry the

  79. meaning that your soul is looking for. Right?

  80. Like we are in a fight for meaning. If you are

  81. human, you are in a fight for meaning. You are

  82. always trying to define meaning. You are always

  83. trying to gain more from something than it was

  84. ever meant to give you. And that's the whole

  85. point of what he's been getting at. And then

  86. he hits chapter 3 and he says this. There is

  87. a time for everything and a season for every

  88. activity under the heavens. A time to be born

  89. and a time to die. A time to plant and a time

  90. to uproot. Anybody have a song in their head

  91. right now? To everything? Turn, turn, turn, right?

  92. We just had to get that out of the way. Otherwise,

  93. you're going to think about that the whole time.

  94. So now we've done that, we're past it, okay?

  95. Verse one again. There is a time for everything,

  96. a season. What is he connected? Time and season.

  97. There is a time and there is a season. for everything

  98. and every activity under the heavens. You, you,

  99. another way to say that is, you are a physical

  100. body bound in time and seasons. You are a physical

  101. body bound in time and seasons. You are here

  102. in this time, in this place, and you are bound

  103. to it. And in Genesis chapter 1, listen to the

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  104. rhythms, the seasons that are built in. Genesis

    Genesis 1:5

  105. chapter 1, verse 5, and there was... and there

  106. was morning the first day. So in creation, in

  107. the created order, there's this rhythm to it.

  108. Verse 8, and there was evening and there was

  109. morning the second day. Verse 13, and there was

  110. evening and there was morning the third day.

  111. Verse 19, and there was evening and there was

  112. morning the fourth day. And there was evening,

  113. verse 23, and there was evening and there was

  114. morning the fifth day. Verse 31. God saw all

  115. that he had made and it was very good. And there

  116. was evening and there was morning, the sixth

  117. day. Guess what happened on the sixth day? God

  118. took humans that he had created and he put them

  119. inside of the perfect environment. And inside

  120. of that perfect environment, there were rhythms

  121. and there were seasons and there was time. You

  122. and me and humanity were planted. We are bound

  123. by times and seasons. You are a human being that

  124. was always intended to live in a place where

  125. the sun came up and the sun went down. And you

  126. have no control over the sun coming up and the

  127. sun going down. And every single day you have

  128. a reminder. of the sun coming up and the sun

  129. going down. And what it's screaming at you is

  130. you are not in control. Why? Because I'm bound

  131. to a place that has time and it has seasons,

  132. it has rhythm and it has movement, but I'm bound

  133. to it, right? Which is why he says in the next

  134. one, he begins to give examples of this. There's

  135. activity and there's everything under the heavens.

  136. He goes, there's a time to be born and a time

  137. to die. You didn't choose, I didn't choose where

  138. I was born, when I was born, right? None of that.

  139. The family I was born into, you didn't choose

  140. any of that. Isn't it amazing that's how we start

  141. and all of a sudden we think we're in control?

  142. Like all of a sudden I think I got decisions,

  143. right? And God goes, I had a friend who grew

  144. up, he was in a missionary family, and he often

  145. talked about that his house was here and a hundred

  146. feet away. was a tribal hut where his best friend

  147. from the village lived. And he talked about the

  148. struggle that happened internally because he

  149. would hear the things, he would understand the

  150. depravity and the pain and the suffering that

  151. his friend had been born into. And he goes, I

  152. was born literally 100 feet away into... everything

  153. that was different about life, where I had everything

  154. at my disposal. And he goes, I didn't choose

  155. any of it. I didn't choose to be born here and

  156. he didn't choose to be born there. Why? Because

  157. you don't choose where you were born. It's right

  158. out the gate. He's going, there's an activity.

  159. You're bound by time and seasons. And guess what?

  160. You didn't even choose the season you're born.

  161. Guess what? You won't choose the season you die.

  162. You have no choice. Death is coming. Isn't it

  163. amazing? Like you've been to a memorial and you

  164. sit in a memorial and there's the montage. You

  165. know what I mean? And the total side note, I

  166. wasn't planning on going here. The more pictures

  167. you take, you ever notice we take pictures like

  168. like lots of pictures now. Good luck when I die

  169. going through my pictures. Right. Like like how

  170. you're going to pick whatever. Right. And so

  171. if you notice, you used to go to a memorial and

  172. it was like two and a half minutes to a song

  173. that would make you cry. Now it's like 15 minutes

  174. because there's so many pictures. Okay, my soapbox

  175. is over. Make shorter montages, people. But here's

  176. the reality. Let's say it's eight minutes, two

  177. songs. That's an entire life in eight minutes.

  178. I was chatting with somebody this week. It was

  179. actually Caleb, one of our worship leaders. He's

  180. our worship pastor here at the church. And he

  181. was talking about a young man that had passed

  182. away. And he goes, the photo's on Instagram.

  183. He goes. within seconds you can go back to his

  184. birth. Why? Because we understand we're bound

  185. into a season where our birth and our death,

  186. right? Like if you were here for just camping,

  187. we know this life, we're not, like, what are

  188. we doing? We're not staying. No matter how hard

  189. you try. And so there's a season that we're born

  190. into. That verse continues on. It says a time

  191. to plant and a time to uproot, a time to plant.

  192. And obviously you bring naturally goes to like

  193. plants in the ground and and it becomes. It's

  194. not bearing fruit anymore. So you remove it,

  195. you uproot it, right? So you're planting with

  196. the hopes of something and you're uprooting.

  197. I would put it into life this way. If you've

  198. ever had a kid that's gone to college or if you

  199. ever had a sibling that's gone to college or

  200. anybody you've known, they have a whole life

  201. that they've planted in this space and then they

  202. uproot it and move it here. And then they will

  203. uproot it and move somewhere else. If you are

  204. a person that's moved to this neighborhood, so

  205. to speak, this part of the world, and you're

  206. here and you're going, man, I had such good community

  207. back there and I just can't find my people here.

  208. Be patient. You uprooted. And some of you, it

  209. was a lifetime. Some of you, it was 10 years

  210. of friendships. And you got here and you're like,

  211. I can't find anybody. And you go, how long has

  212. it been? Like a month. It takes time because

  213. you're putting down roots, you're planting. He

  214. goes, there's a season for this, a time to kill.

  215. Verse three, a time to kill and a time to heal.

  216. That word kill is violently kill. And probably

  217. my favorite context to put that in for us is

  218. that there are sins in your life that you need

  219. to violently kill. There are things that are

  220. hurting you, hurting your relationships, hurting

  221. the people around you. You've become a user of

  222. people and you need to violently kill the sin

  223. that is in your life. It is not good for you

  224. and it is not good for them. That's the wording

  225. that's used here. There is a time to violently

  226. kill, but there's also a time to heal. Some of

  227. you are in a season where you have been deeply

  228. wounded and you just need to heal. You just need

  229. to take time and realize I'm in a season where

  230. the best thing I can do is go through. And that

  231. healing is a complete healing. It's a redeemable

  232. healing. A time to tear down and a time to build.

  233. The tear down has to do with breaching a wall.

  234. If you were alive during the Berlin Wall coming

  235. down, they breached the wall. It came down and

  236. they tore it apart. That's the idea here. What

  237. context that this fits into is relationships.

  238. You know what we do in relationships? We build

  239. walls, right? Like you hurt me, that offense,

  240. I take a brick, I put it down, slap some mortar

  241. on it. The next time you hurt me, I put it down

  242. and I'm building a wall between us, right? You

  243. ever meet somebody that's been married a little

  244. while and you're like, if you could go back to

  245. when they first met, they're like, I'm marrying

  246. my best friend, right? 10 years later, I hate

  247. you. Well, they built a wall. It didn't happen

  248. overnight. They built a wall between them. This

  249. tear down has ripped the wall. It's a physical

  250. activity to take it brick by brick apart. I would

  251. say this, that if you have relationships where

  252. you go, you know what? It feels like something's

  253. off. It feels like it's distant. Then maybe just

  254. breach the wall. Maybe you've built a wall and

  255. you've got to tear it down. Another side of that,

  256. though, is that there's time to build up. There

  257. is a time to use boundaries. There is a time

  258. that's appropriate in relationships to have healthy

  259. boundaries where that person is not allowed to

  260. continue to harm. Verse 4, a time to weep. And

  261. a time to laugh, a time to mourn, and a time

  262. to dance. I love that a lot of these have to

  263. do relationally. It requires other people in

  264. it with you. There is a time to laugh and there's

  265. a time to cry. That's what it's getting at. But

  266. you do that with people. There's a time to mourn.

  267. If you're in mourning, the worst thing you can

  268. do is isolate yourself. The idea is that you

  269. mourn with people. And there's a time to dance.

  270. Dancing is a whole lot more fun if you're with

  271. people. It's a whole lot more comfortable by

  272. yourself. A time to scatter stones and a time

  273. to gather them. This one has to do with resources.

  274. So the original context, they believe, was a

  275. field. And when somebody was coming in to occupy,

  276. like an enemy was going to take over your area,

  277. you would go and scatter stones into the field

  278. to ruin the field for them. So when they occupied,

  279. the field was no good to them. Essentially, you

  280. were hurting them. subverting the empire, so

  281. to speak. But then the other side of that is

  282. a time to gather them. That if you've got a project,

  283. gathering stones helps you build that project.

  284. And so the idea of resources, what are you doing

  285. with your resources? It's a time to scatter and

  286. there's a time to gather. A time to embrace and

  287. a time to reframe from embracing. If you're going

  288. to date my kid, you ain't embracing. Just saying.

  289. So stupid. Don't laugh at that. Verse six, a

  290. time to search and a time to give up. A time

  291. to keep and a time to throw away. A time to tear

  292. and a time to mend. A time, gentlemen, a time

  293. to be silent and a time to speak. Husbands in

  294. the room, there's a time to just shut up. How

  295. do I know? I'm the king. Amen. There we go. Notice

  296. the guy wasn't saying amen. There's just a time

  297. to shut up. There's just a time when your words

  298. are not going to help. There's a time when specifically

  299. if somebody is in grief, I would just encourage

  300. you, your words, your words don't mean nearly

  301. as much as your presence. And a lot of times

  302. we're uncomfortable when somebody's going through

  303. grief. So guess what we do? We just verbally

  304. vomit, right? Like we just keep talking to fill

  305. the space. They don't need you to fill the space.

  306. They need you to just feel what they feel. They

  307. need you to just sit with them. There will be

  308. a time. As some of us, when you get into grief,

  309. you can have all kinds of thoughts about God

  310. and what he's doing. And that's okay. That's

  311. okay. It's part of life. It's one of the seasons.

  312. You may hear questions from somebody that you're

  313. like, I didn't know you could ask this question.

  314. I got to fix this right now because you're asking

  315. something about God. You're asking if he's even

  316. there. And so we panic and we go, I got to fix

  317. this. I got to make sure their doctrine's okay.

  318. That is not the time to fix their doctrine. That

  319. is not the time to tell them all the theology

  320. of God and what you think. That is the time to

  321. go, man, I feel that. I can understand how you

  322. feel that way. And then shut up. There's a time

  323. to be silent. But you know what? There is a time

  324. to speak. I would say when you come across injustice,

  325. the church, church, church, church, people of

  326. God, you better have a voice when it comes to

  327. injustice. Why? Because our God has a voice when

  328. it comes to injustice. When you find people marginalized,

  329. when you find them oppressed, guess what? It

  330. is a time to speak up. That is our role in the

  331. world. Why? Because Jesus stepped up and he spoke

  332. up for us when there was injustice and marginalizing

  333. and when we were oppressed. A time to love and

  334. a time to hate. I hate my fantasy football team.

  335. They are 0 -2 and they have lost really, really

  336. poorly. I hated football last weekend entirely

  337. because the Steelers also got destroyed. There's

  338. a time to love and there's a time to hate. There's

  339. an appropriate action. You know what it says

  340. in the Bible? Hate what is evil. Right? Cling

  341. to what is good. Cling to God. Hate what's opposite

  342. of God. Right? There's a time for it. When you

  343. find things that are opposite of God, like cell

  344. phones in church. I'm just kidding. Just kidding.

  345. You were all faking it. I just said it. But there's

  346. a time, there's a time, time to love and there's

  347. a time to hate. There's a time for war and a

  348. time for peace. That word peace is shalom when

  349. everything will be put back together as it should

  350. be. Here's what's crazy. You've got eight verses,

  351. and in eight verses, you've got ordinary life.

  352. Those are things every single person, if you

  353. are human, you, because you are bound to space

  354. and time, you are bound to time and seasons,

  355. you are going to go through these things if you

  356. haven't already. You cannot avoid them. Why?

  357. Because they are part of this life. They are

  358. part of the rhythms, right? And that's what he's

  359. getting at. This is ordinary life coming at you.

  360. So then he goes in verse nine, he says, what

  361. do workers gain from their toil? He's all the

  362. way back to chapter one, verse three, where he's

  363. going, so what profit is there in any of this?

  364. So the seasons that you go through, you may be

  365. going, what's the profit? What do I gain? Verse

  366. 10, he says this, I have seen the burden God

  367. has laid on the human race. I have seen the burden.

  368. I think the wisest man that ever lived, the man

  369. who had everything you could ever want, he had

  370. all the experiences, everything, right? And what

  371. does he say? Man, I see how hard this life is.

  372. I see how hard these seasons are. Remember, we

  373. live in a Genesis 3 world. We talked about this

  374. last week, right? Like Genesis 1 and 2, God creates

  375. everything perfect. Sin enters, it breaks it,

  376. it shatters it. We live in a broken form of what

  377. is. And he's just recognizing that in the broken

  378. form, where we are still time -bound bodies in

  379. time and seasons, right? Like we're still physically

  380. bound, right? Like you're in a body. He goes,

  381. you're going to go through this, and it's okay

  382. for it to be hard and difficult and be a burden.

  383. He goes, it's not easy. So then in verse 11,

  384. he says this. He has also set eternity in the

  385. human heart. He has also set eternity in the

  386. human heart. That makes you an extremely complex

  387. being. On the days where you're like, somebody

  388. asks you how you feel, I don't know how I feel.

  389. It's okay to be complex. You just take them to

  390. this verse. Right? Because he just got done with

  391. ordinary life and he goes, you're physically

  392. bound in time and seasons. But then he goes,

  393. but inside of you, and he uses this word, we

  394. translate it heart, but it's really like mind,

  395. soul, will. Right? Like it's everything that

  396. makes up the internal you. We would call that

  397. the soul. Your soul is bound by eternity. So

  398. while you're physically bound by time and seasons,

  399. the sun up, sun down, your soul is bound by eternity.

  400. What that means is, old men, we don't get it.

  401. You know why? You ever meet an old man that looks

  402. at his kid, maybe this one, looks at his kid

  403. and goes, I can beat you in a race. And you set

  404. off on the race and 10 yards in, you're like,

  405. oh, that's the hammy. Why? Because internally,

  406. Internally, we don't feel old. Right? It's not

  407. until you look in the mirror that you're like,

  408. whoa, we got gray. Right? It's not internally.

  409. We're still like, we can still do that. We can

  410. still carry that. And you go to pick it up and

  411. your back goes, no, you can't. Internally, eternity

  412. is in our souls. I don't think your soul ages.

  413. I don't think your soul is like this thing that

  414. is in the same decay as your body. You know how

  415. I know? I was here. You guys see that. I know

  416. you guys did because I saw some of you out there

  417. with your cameras. You see the sunset Wednesday

  418. night? Yeah, it's pretty wild. I think we have

  419. a picture maybe of the sunset. That's pretty

  420. crazy, huh? Simon took that. So just in case

  421. you're curious, we'll give cred. Man, I saw that

  422. sunset, and in my soul, I'm like, it's so good.

  423. It's so rich. I got to my life group, and my

  424. life group is sitting outside. Guess what they're

  425. staring at? The sunset, because internally, we're

  426. like, God is painting, and when God paints, there's

  427. something right. You have moments in your life

  428. where you go, I just want this moment to stay

  429. forever. It's so beautiful. It's so good. That's

  430. eternity inside your heart, right? You were made

  431. for forever, but you're physically bound in time

  432. and seasons. That's the complexity that he's

  433. getting at here. And then he says in that same

  434. verse, he says he hasn't made everything beautiful

  435. in its time. He has said eternity. He has said

  436. eternity in the human heart. He has made everything

  437. beautiful in its what? Time. Wait, eternity is

  438. in your heart. You recognize the eternal, right?

  439. Like my soul knows it. My body is trapped in

  440. time. But he goes, he has made everything beautiful

  441. in its time. That word time is the same word

  442. that's above. He's making it beautiful in the

  443. complexity of I'm trapped in time. But eternally,

  444. I know my soul knows it's for more. He goes right

  445. here in this season. Right here in this season,

  446. I'm making it beautiful. That word beautiful

  447. is I am fitting it together. I am fitting it

  448. together. That's what that word beautiful means,

  449. that God, God is the agent. And what is God doing?

  450. God is putting your season that you are in. He

  451. is fitting it in its time perfectly, knowing

  452. that your soul, knowing that your soul is geared

  453. on eternity and you're physically trapped in

  454. space and time and season. He goes, I'm working

  455. this moment right here. It's interesting. The

  456. graphic for this collection, the idea of you're

  457. in a fight for meaning, right? So it's the boxing

  458. ring. But there's a tree stump. And you might

  459. go, that's weird. Why do we put it on a tree

  460. stump? Well, we talked about, right? The rings

  461. are the time and place. But you know what those

  462. rings do? When the tree is in a season where

  463. it's got everything it needs. Right, like everything

  464. is there for the tree to flourish. There's no

  465. resistance, meaning there's plenty of rain, plenty

  466. of sun, plenty of long days. Everything is as

  467. it should be. Guess what the tree does? It grows

  468. really fast. And if you were to cut the tree

  469. open, what you would see in that moment of growing

  470. really fast is the ring on the tree is marked

  471. by a light color. And what it's telling you,

  472. it's marking the season, that this season was

  473. a season where it was. healthy and resistant

  474. free. And I was able to grow a lot is what the

  475. tree is telling you. But that same tree, when

  476. in drought, creates a different ring. That same

  477. tree, when it doesn't have as much sun, that

  478. same tree, when it has a lot of storms, that

  479. same tree that has a lot of resistance will produce

  480. a dark ring next. And here's what's fascinating.

  481. The dark ring is actually where Through the resistance,

  482. the hardwood comes. And so if you've ever been

  483. to the tropics and you look at the canopy of

  484. the jungle, right? And the trees are tall and

  485. the canopy is large. Guess what happens when

  486. the hurricane comes? Those trees snap first.

  487. You know why? They grew without resistance. They

  488. grew without seasons. The trees that stand when

  489. the hurricane comes are the ones that go through

  490. seasons. They've developed the dark rings. They've

  491. developed the ability. So here's what's fascinating.

  492. The trees that are shorter, that don't have as

  493. large canopies, when the hurricane comes, they're

  494. the ones that stay standing. But they have to

  495. go through the seasons. What this is saying is

  496. that God fits the seasons. And in Romans chapter

    Romans 8:28

  497. 8, verse 28, it says this, and we know, and we

  498. know. Who's we? We the church. We God's people.

  499. We know that in all things. How many things?

  500. Every season you will face. Everything you're

  501. going through. Everything in your ordinary life.

  502. Everything that you're bound to in this life.

  503. It says that we know in all things God works.

  504. God works. That word work is where we get the

  505. word synergy. So between your all things and

  506. God, that creates the synergy. For what comes

  507. next? That he works all things for good of those

  508. who love him and who have been called according

  509. to his purpose. For those God foreknew, he also

  510. predestined to be conformed to the image of his

  511. son. What is God doing in your season? God is

  512. taking all things, including the season you prefer

  513. not to be in, and God is taking that. And because

  514. that is in the same conversation with God who

  515. fits all things together, the synergy that's

  516. created is good in your life. Even though the

  517. season is hard, he's creating good in your life

  518. today. And what is the good? That you would look

  519. like Jesus. The good is that you are going to

  520. be transformed. The good is that the season,

  521. you need this season. Without the season, you

  522. will not be shaped into the person of Jesus Christ.

  523. So while you're down here, you can clap. Go ahead,

  524. I'll let you. We'll have a clap break. But while

  525. you're down here and you're frustrated with the

  526. season, while you're down here and it's hard

  527. because you're trapped and you're bound, in eternity

  528. you're going, I just want to be gone. Well, you're

  529. here. You just need to know that there's a God

  530. who loves you and he's working all things. He's

  531. using it. And if you remove the all things or

  532. you remove God, you don't get the synergy to

  533. transform you into Jesus. Back in Ecclesiastes.

  534. Yet no one can fathom. So he has made everything

  535. beautiful in its time. He has set eternity in

  536. the human heart, yet no one can fathom what God

  537. has done from beginning to end. You know what

  538. that means? It means you're in a scene of a movie.

  539. And your scene is not the whole movie. My kids

  540. made me watch a three -hour movie recently. Yeah,

  541. it's a fun time. Especially when it's a movie

  542. you've already seen. Right? But can you imagine

  543. that three hour movie or maybe a better context

  544. is I know some people that are listening to like

  545. a 35 hour audio book. That's ridiculous. That's

  546. a long time. But can you imagine if I pop into

  547. your audio book that's 35 hours long and I pop

  548. in and I listen to five minutes and I'm like,

  549. I don't get it. I don't get the plot. I don't

  550. get the, that's your life. Your life is a scene

  551. in the story of God. And we're down here in the

  552. scene going, no, no, no, no. I want to control

  553. it and I want to make sure it makes sense. And

  554. so you grab the pen and you try and write the

  555. end of the story. The problem is you don't know

  556. the story because you're in a scene. And you've

  557. got to accept I'm in a scene. I took my kid,

  558. my 15 -year -old, driving last Sunday for the

  559. first time. She did great. She did great. What

  560. was interesting was she gets into the car and

  561. it's the first time she's ever been behind a

  562. wheel. And she puts it in drive. And what happens

  563. when you take your foot off the brake and it's

  564. in drive? It moves forward. She goes, oh, I don't

  565. like that. And she did great. She drove where

  566. I told her to drive and did the things she needed

  567. to do. But here's what's interesting. She's a

  568. hold of the wheel. And she's in that moment.

  569. And what she can see is where. right in front

  570. of her. What's my next step? What do I do? What

  571. am I doing? I'm aware of everything else. Every

  572. car, every person, where she's going next, what

  573. she needs to do, if she's going to become a driver

  574. on the road that's a benefit to society, right?

  575. She's going to need this moment. She's going

  576. to need this. But how ridiculous of her if she

  577. goes, no, I don't like where I am. I'm going

  578. to take control and do what I want to do and

  579. go where I want to go. She would end up in a

  580. what? A wreck. Some of you are trying to take

  581. the steering wheel of your life instead of accepting

  582. what God has got for you in the season that you're

  583. in. So what do we do with all this? Listen to

  584. what he tells us to do. I know that there is

  585. nothing better. There's nothing better. So the

  586. guy who had everything, nothing better. The guy

  587. who did everything, nothing better. For people

  588. then to be happy. Be happy. You know what that

  589. means in the original? Choose joy. It's activate

  590. joy. But John, you don't understand. I don't

  591. need to understand what you're going through.

  592. What I know is you are maybe not in control of

  593. anything else, but what you can control in this

  594. moment is you will choose joy. You know why?

  595. Because God is still in control. God has still

  596. got it. He's still got the whole story, which

  597. means that I can go in this moment when even

  598. though things aren't, I can't see them. I don't

  599. know what they look like. I can only see the

  600. scene. I can choose joy right here, right now.

  601. He goes, be happy. What's the next thing he says?

  602. Do good. You know what do good is? Do righteousness.

  603. What is righteousness? What is the right action

  604. required of me according to God? Just do that.

  605. Maybe another way to say it, if you remember

  606. from last week, the idea of see good is to see

  607. God. So to do good is to do God. What would God

  608. do right here, right now? Well, God would be

  609. kind to the person next to you because he's been

  610. kind. You know that. He's been kind to you. What

  611. would God do? And then just do it. Do good while

  612. you live. That each of them may eat, drink, and

  613. find satisfaction in their toil. This is the

  614. gift of God. Out of everything we talked about,

  615. all of the seasons, all of the ordinary life,

  616. what does he say that you should do today? Leave

  617. here and get something to eat and get something

  618. to drink. And find satisfaction. What does not

  619. find satisfaction? If you were here last week,

  620. you know that that phrase means to see good.

  621. And if you see good, you see God. And if you

  622. see God, you see Jesus. Why? Because God is good.

  623. So eat. Drink and see God. I think, man, man,

  624. when God put this thing together, there's some

  625. Jedi mind tricks in it, let me tell you. Because

  626. when Jesus is with his followers and he's about

  627. to leave and they're about to head into a season

  628. that's unknown, what does he tell them to do?

  629. Eat, drink. And what? Remember me, see me. Hold

  630. up. It's that easy? Yeah. Because you know what

  631. happens? If you're in grief today, it's a hard

  632. season. It's painful. No one would choose it.

  633. We weren't meant to live with it, by the way.

  634. Genesis 3 world has death. God's created order

  635. did not have death. You know why we don't know

  636. how to handle death? It's because we were never

  637. meant to live with death. It was never meant

  638. to be a part of our world. That's why we don't

  639. know what to do with it. That's why it doesn't

  640. fit. That's why it feels so weird. That's why

  641. grief tripping us up five years later is so awkward.

  642. But if you're in one of the worst moments of

  643. life, guess what the best thing you can do is?

  644. Eat, drink. Why? Well, when I go from here, or

  645. you go from here, and you put a plate of food

  646. in front of you, where'd it come from? Did it

  647. come from you? It came from God. He provided

  648. today. So when I eat, what am I actually reminding

  649. myself of? Divine provision from God. So when

  650. I eat, I'm reminded, you gave this to me, and

  651. if you're in control of the very food I eat,

  652. you're more than in control of the season that

  653. I'm in. And I know in my season, you're working

  654. all things for good, right? Wait, wait, when

  655. I take a drink of water, you realize how blessed

  656. we are to have faucets that you can drink the

  657. water out of? My gosh, talk about spoil. You

  658. know how many people in the world have to walk

  659. just to get a glass of water? Spend their whole

  660. day, day after day, collecting water. Why? So

  661. my family can drink. And what do you do? You

  662. go over to the faucet and leave it running. Because

  663. we're that blessed. I'm glad you laughed. I thought

  664. it was funny. With that blessed, that's what

  665. it's supposed to remind you when you get a glass

  666. of water, right? Like we go to a restaurant,

  667. it's like the lowest thing offered. You want

  668. some water? And water is screaming how blessed

  669. you are. And it reminds me that if God can provide

  670. water today, he can provide that today. When

  671. you eat and when you drink, see God. When you

  672. take the bread. It is impossible to eat the bread

  673. in this setting and not remember a God who died

  674. for you and his name was Jesus. Eat the bread

  675. and remember Jesus. Eat the bread, see Jesus.

  676. Drink the wine, see Jesus. So the next moments

  677. are yours. You're gonna eat, you're gonna drink.

  678. What do you need to see of God? What do you need

  679. to be reminded of of God? And then we'll take

  680. it all together. Jesus told his disciples, take,

  681. eat, and do this in remembrance of me. He took

  682. a glass of wine, and he talked about a new covenant,

  683. a covenant of grace, that in the shedding of

  684. his blood, His blood would pay for your sin,

  685. your shame, your guilt, and you would be forgiven

  686. and whole. To see the cup of juice is to see

  687. the blood of Jesus. God is that good to us. And

  688. so he said, take drink, do this in remembrance

  689. of me. That idea of to choose joy. It's active.

  690. It's choice. It's in the moment that even in

  691. the season I'm in, I get to choose joy. To do

  692. good. What is good in this moment? It's to recognize

  693. that everything I've been given by God. That

  694. you have a voice. That you have a mind that allows

  695. you to put words into shape and form that you

  696. can honor God with. And so when I sit and you

  697. see the story and you see what God's doing, that

  698. even in this moment while I'm time bound and

  699. my soul is made for eternity, in this moment

  700. I can do and ascribe value and worship that they

  701. are ascribing in eternity today. That he's worthy

  702. of it all. That everything you have to offer,

  703. he's worthy of. And no one else in your life

  704. that's true of. because he's worthy of every

  705. part of you. So would you stand where you are?

  706. We're going to worship together.
