  1. I'm sorry to burst your bubble, but I will be preaching yet again in Matthew.

  2. ! We're just trying to squeeze all the juice out of this thing, you know?

  3. But if we preached on the last passage already, then what am I going to be preaching on?

  4. Today's sermon will be out of the norm as I'll be preaching on the same exact text as last week,

  5. but really just focusing in on two words, two key words that we want to lead the church in.

  6. And those two key words are make disciples.

  7. To make disciples is what we want to lead the church in.

  8. So I'll be preaching more of a topical, applicational sermon this morning,

  9. really building off of Sean's expositional sermon from last week.

  10. And we don't want to just fly over this quickly,

  11. but we want this command to shape us as a church,

  12. to infiltrate the culture of our church,

  13. so that when people think of Trinity Cambridge,

  14. they don't just say, oh, the music's really good,

  15. or the people are really friendly.

  16. But when they describe us, they would say,

  17. man, that church is a disciple-making machine.

  18. But regardless of whether we preach a topical or expositional sermon,

  19. the best of what I have to say, of what any preacher has to say,

  20. it really just comes from God's word.

  21. So today, even today, it is right and appropriate for us to open up our Bibles

  22. and to hear from him.

  23. Let's open up our Bibles to Matthew 28,

    Matthew 28:16–20

  24. verses 16 to 20.

  25. If you are in need of a Bible, a physical copy,

  26. feel free to raise your hand,

  27. and we'll be happy to get you a Bible that you could take home with you,

  28. use for now.

  29. Let me pray for the reading and preaching of God's word.

  30. Heavenly Father,

  31. this is your church.

  32. these are your people.

  33. I pray that you would speak to us

  34. and address us from your word today

  35. so that we feel the call

  36. to be faithful to our ministries,

  37. to your church,

  38. to your people.

  39. that as you've commanded us to make disciples,

  40. that you would stir up a fire,

  41. a passion,

  42. a desire

  43. to do that,

  44. to do that very thing,

  45. to make disciples of Jesus Christ.

  46. Father,

  47. I pray that you would

  48. help us

  49. to see rightly

  50. that we are small,

  51. we are insufficient for this task,

  52. but that in this time

  53. that you would expand

  54. our vision of you

  55. so that you would not be a small God

  56. but a big God

  57. and a God

  58. who has promised to use us,

  59. broken vessels,

  60. weak vessels,

  61. but nonetheless,

  62. you have assured us

  63. that you will be with us

  64. until the end of the age

  65. and from that,

  66. we feel the confidence

  67. to be able to go forth

  68. and be faithful

  69. to the call

  70. that you have,

  71. you have,

  72. you've called on us,

  73. you've placed on us,

  74. Lord.

  75. We pray that you would

  76. help us to be faithful

  77. disciples to the,

  78. to the little sprouts

  79. that you have put in our midst.

  80. In Jesus' name,

  81. we pray.

  82. Amen.

  83. To honor God's word,

  84. let us rise,

  85. if you are able.

  86. Starting off in Matthew 28,

    Matthew 28:16

  87. verse 16.

  88. Now the,

  89. the eleven disciples

  90. went to Galilee,

  91. to the mountain

  92. to which Jesus

  93. had directed them.

  94. And when they saw him,

  95. they worshiped him,

  96. but some doubted.

  97. And Jesus came

  98. and said to them,

  99. all authority

  100. in heaven and on earth

  101. has been given to me.

  102. Go, therefore,

  103. and make disciples

  104. of all nations,

  105. baptizing them

  106. in the name of the Father

  107. and of the Son

  108. and of the Holy Spirit,

  109. teaching them

  110. to observe all

  111. that I have commanded you.

  112. And behold,

  113. I am with you always

  114. to the end of the age.

  115. This is God's holy

  116. and authoritative word.

  117. Please be seated.

  118. I don't think

  119. what I'm about to say

  120. is overstated

  121. or sensational.

  122. We have a discipleship

  123. crisis

  124. in American Christianity.

  125. We have a discipleship

  126. crisis

  127. in American Christianity.

  128. For the past couple of years,

  129. Ligonier Ministries

  130. and LifeWay Research

  131. has teamed up

  132. to conduct

  133. a survey

  134. to figure out

  135. what do Americans

  136. really believe

  137. about God.

  138. Specifically,

  139. they targeted

  140. and focused

  141. on a group

  142. who have self-identified

  143. as

  144. evangelicals.

  145. And so,

  146. this is our camp.

  147. These are our people.

  148. But yet,

  149. hear what the state

  150. of their beliefs are

  151. from a survey

  152. from last year.

  153. To this statement,

  154. God accepts

  155. the worship

  156. of all religions,

  157. including Christianity,

  158. Islam,

  159. Judaism.

  160. 47%

  161. of evangelicals

  162. agree

  163. to that statement.

  164. Half

  165. of evangelicals

  166. believe

  167. that you could be

  168. a Muslim,

  169. you could be a Jew,

  170. and believe

  171. that Jesus

  172. was not God,

  173. believe that Jesus

  174. did not die

  175. for our sins,

  176. to the acceptance,

  177. to the glory

  178. of God.

  179. Everyone sins

  180. a little,

  181. but most people

  182. are good by nature.

  183. It's another statement.

  184. More than half

  185. of the Christians

  186. surveyed,

  187. 53%,

  188. don't think

  189. that you need

  190. the atoning

  191. sacrifice of Jesus

  192. because you yourself

  193. are good enough.

  194. 53% would agree

  195. to that statement.

  196. Or every Christian

  197. has an obligation

  198. to join a local church.

  199. One third,

  200. one third

  201. of confessing

  202. evangelicals

  203. would disagree

  204. with that.

  205. One in three

  206. think that church

  207. is just completely

  208. unnecessary.

  209. And it's not just

  210. basic theology

  211. that we are lacking in.

  212. We also lack

  213. faithful obedience.

  214. Scripture teaches us

  215. that it is more

  216. blessed to give

  217. than to receive

  218. and to live a life

  219. of radical generosity.

  220. And yet,

  221. it's surveyed

  222. that less than

  223. or more than half

  224. of evangelicals

  225. give less than

  226. 1% of their

  227. annual income away.

  228. And it's no secret

  229. that the church

  230. has a pervasive

  231. problem with

  232. poor news.

  233. In other surveys,

  234. 64% of born-again

  235. Christian men

  236. and even

  237. 44%

  238. of women

  239. admit to

  240. struggling with

  241. pornography

  242. regularly.

  243. Or take

  244. divorce and

  245. remarriage.

  246. A Barna study

  247. found that

  248. born-again

  249. Christians

  250. divorce at

  251. the exact

  252. same rate

  253. as the

  254. national

  255. average.

  256. It's virtually

  257. indistinguishable.

  258. And those

  259. statistics can

  260. paint

  261. Christians

  262. in a bad

  263. light,

  264. but it doesn't

  265. tell you the

  266. whole picture.

  267. Because what

  268. the data

  269. does not

  270. tell you

  271. is that

  272. those

  273. in the

  274. church

  275. who are

  276. spiritually

  277. engaged,

  278. who are

  279. active in

  280. the church,

  281. consistent

  282. in Bible

  283. reading,

  284. they have

  285. radically

  286. different

  287. numbers.

  288. As an

  289. example,

  290. the generosity

  291. levels among

  292. evangelicals

  293. who read

  294. their Bibles

  295. daily are

  296. 582% higher

  297. than those

  298. who never

  299. read their

  300. Bible ever.

  301. One national

  302. study found

  303. that young

  304. people who

  305. rarely or

  306. never attend

  307. religious services

  308. saw their

  309. pornography use

  310. increase nearly

  311. twice as fast

  312. as those who

  313. attended frequently.

  314. Or sociologist

  315. Bradley White

  316. writes,

  317. analysis shows

  318. that the number

  319. of divorces

  320. is nearly

  321. double for

  322. those who

  323. are disengaged

  324. in the

  325. church versus

  326. those who

  327. are actively

  328. engaged.

  329. So what

  330. do those

  331. numbers tell

  332. us?

  333. It's the

  334. same population,

  335. those who

  336. are self-identifying

  337. as Christians,

  338. as evangelicals,

  339. and yet their

  340. differences could

  341. not be more

  342. pronounced.

  343. One group is

  344. not actively

  345. being discipled

  346. while the

  347. other is

  348. being actively

  349. discipled by

  350. the church,

  351. by scripture,

  352. by the

  353. ordinary means

  354. of grace

  355. that God

  356. has established.

  357. And their

  358. differences cannot

  359. be more pronounced.

  360. The investment

  361. shows these

  362. two groups

  363. produce wildly

  364. different fruit.

  365. So I think

  366. that tells us

  367. that we have

  368. an incredible

  369. dearth of

  370. deep discipleship

  371. in the American

  372. church.

  373. church.

  374. The solution

  375. then to

  376. reverse this

  377. crisis is

  378. rather simple.

  379. We are to

  380. make disciples

  381. and we are

  382. to do it in

  383. Jesus'

  384. way.

  385. By the

  386. grace,

  387. by the

  388. power of

  389. Jesus Christ,

  390. our chief,

  391. our great

  392. discipler,

  393. we are to

  394. make mature

  395. disciples of

  396. Jesus Christ

  397. by teaching

  398. them to

  399. follow

  400. everything

  401. that he

  402. has commanded

  403. us.

  404. That's the

  405. main goal

  406. of my

  407. sermon,

  408. to help us

  409. do that,

  410. to be faithful

  411. to that

  412. call.

  413. So to help

  414. us understand

  415. how to

  416. make

  417. disciples,

  418. we are going

  419. to survey

  420. scripture to

  421. answer these

  422. three simple

  423. questions about

  424. disciple making.

  425. What does it

  426. mean to

  427. make disciples?

  428. What do we

  429. mean when we

  430. say that?

  431. Why?

  432. Why do we

  433. have to make

  434. disciples?

  435. disciples and

  436. how?

  437. How can we

  438. practically,

  439. even this

  440. very week,

  441. make disciples?

  442. The Great

  443. Commission is

  444. the foundational

  445. text that

  446. has fueled

  447. mission efforts

  448. all across

  449. the world.

  450. And rightfully

  451. so.

  452. To make

  453. disciples means

  454. that we must

  455. share the

  456. gospel and

  457. by the power

  458. of the Spirit

  459. lead them to

  460. make public

  461. profession of

  462. their faith by

  463. getting baptized.

  464. Acts 14,

  465. 21 also uses

  466. the same

  467. verb to

  468. make disciples

  469. to describe

  470. Paul and

  471. Barnabas as

  472. they travel to

  473. the city called

  474. Derbe.

  475. And they

  476. preach the

  477. gospel there

  478. for the very

  479. first time.

  480. So integral

  481. to disciple

  482. making is

  483. evangelism,

  484. right?

  485. Outward

  486. discipleship.

  487. And time

  488. and time

  489. again you

  490. have heard

  491. from this

  492. very pulpit

  493. the application,

  494. the call

  495. to be bold,

  496. to overcome

  497. our fear

  498. of man

  499. and to

  500. share the

  501. good news

  502. to our

  503. unbelieving

  504. friends,

  505. neighbors,

  506. our families.

  507. We talk

  508. about evangelism,

  509. we pray

  510. for evangelism,

  511. we teach

  512. about evangelism,

  513. we allocate

  514. church budget

  515. towards evangelism.

  516. Evangelism is

  517. an indispensable

  518. part to

  519. fulfill the

  520. Great Commission.

  521. but evangelism

  522. alone cannot

  523. capture the

  524. totality of

  525. what it means

  526. to make

  527. disciples.

  528. For the work

  529. of discipling

  530. does not stop

  531. when someone

  532. gets a little

  533. wet when they

  534. get baptized.

  535. If you remember

  536. last week,

  537. Sean helpfully

  538. observed how

  539. the main

  540. verb in the

  541. Great Commission

  542. is to make

  543. disciples,

  544. right?

  545. That's the

  546. main command,

  547. the main

  548. imperative,

  549. but it also

  550. has all these

  551. other words

  552. around it

  553. to explain

  554. what it means

  555. to make

  556. disciples.

  557. You have all

  558. these verbal

  559. adjectives,

  560. right?

  561. Going,

  562. baptizing,

  563. and the third

  564. and final one

  565. is teaching,

  566. to teach.

  567. At its very

  568. core,

  569. what discipling

  570. means is to

  571. teach,

  572. to teach

  573. our disciples

  574. to obey

  575. what?

  576. All that

  577. Jesus has

  578. commanded us.

  579. We are to

  580. obey,

  581. we are to

  582. teach them

  583. to obey

  584. every single

  585. one of

  586. Jesus'

  587. commands.

  588. But how

  589. can they

  590. obey his

  591. commands if

  592. they don't

  593. even know

  594. them?

  595. And how

  596. are they

  597. to know

  598. them if

  599. we don't

  600. teach them

  601. from his

  602. word?

  603. So we

  604. ought to

  605. teach people

  606. what

  607. and how

  608. to obey

  609. Jesus

  610. in accordance

  611. to God's

  612. word.

  613. But the

  614. word provides

  615. more than just

  616. the what's

  617. and the how's

  618. to obey

  619. Jesus in

  620. everything.

  621. But arguably

  622. more importantly,

  623. it teaches us

  624. the why's.

  625. Our disciples

  626. need to have

  627. a robust

  628. theology

  629. and an

  630. understanding

  631. of who

  632. God is,

  633. who we

  634. are,

  635. what sin

  636. is,

  637. what righteousness

  638. looks like.

  639. They need

  640. to be able

  641. to see

  642. and understand

  643. the world

  644. in the same

  645. way that God

  646. sees and

  647. understands

  648. the world.

  649. In other

  650. words,

  651. they need

  652. to be

  653. discipled

  654. to have

  655. a biblical

  656. worldview

  657. and a value

  658. system,

  659. not just

  660. one that's

  661. imported in

  662. from the rest

  663. of this

  664. world.

  665. And that's

  666. precisely why

  667. Paul says

  668. in Romans

  669. 12 too,

  670. Paul teaches

  671. us,

  672. not to be

  673. conformed to

  674. this world

  675. but be

  676. transformed

  677. by the

  678. renewal of

  679. your mind

  680. that by

  681. testing you

  682. may discern

  683. what is

  684. the will

  685. of God,

  686. what is

  687. good and

  688. acceptable

  689. and perfect.

  690. The Bible,

  691. you guys know,

  692. isn't a

  693. rule book,

  694. a handbook

  695. that tells us

  696. exactly what

  697. to do in

  698. every single

  699. situation.

  700. But if we

  701. are steeped

  702. in the word

  703. of God,

  704. if our

  705. disciples

  706. have the

  707. word of

  708. God part

  709. of them,

  710. if it's

  711. part of

  712. their natural

  713. reasoning

  714. and thinking,

  715. then they're

  716. going to be

  717. able to

  718. discern the

  719. will of

  720. God and

  721. obey him

  722. in all

  723. scenarios.

  724. And so

  725. the word

  726. of God

  727. not only

  728. informs,

  729. but it

  730. actually

  731. forms us

  732. into mature

  733. disciples of

  734. Jesus Christ.

  735. But it's

  736. not just

  737. teaching them

  738. to know

  739. rightly,

  740. but they

  741. have to

  742. love

  743. rightly.

  744. Jesus

  745. claimed that

  746. all of

  747. the law

  748. can be

  749. summed

  750. up

  751. into

  752. two

  753. simple

  754. commands.

  755. To love

  756. the Lord

  757. your God

  758. with all

  759. your heart,

  760. soul,

  761. mind,

  762. and strength,

  763. and to

  764. love your

  765. neighbor as

  766. yourself.

  767. That's the

  768. whole of

  769. the law,

  770. to love,

  771. to cherish,

  772. to treasure,

  773. to adore

  774. Jesus with

  775. every fiber

  776. of your

  777. being.

  778. That's the

  779. whole of

  780. the law.

  781. And so

  782. if our

  783. disciples,

  784. if we are

  785. to teach

  786. our

  787. disciples

  788. to obey

  789. everything

  790. that Jesus

  791. has commanded,

  792. it must

  793. entail

  794. passing on

  795. to others

  796. an adoration,

  797. a treasuring

  798. of Christ.

  799. Well,

  800. I could

  801. teach theology,

  802. I can teach

  803. doctrine,

  804. but how do

  805. you teach

  806. someone to

  807. love something?

  808. We do it

  809. all the time.

  810. Why do

  811. you like

  812. that band

  813. or that

  814. sport?

  815. Or that

  816. hobby?

  817. Perhaps you

  818. really got

  819. into it

  820. yourself,

  821. but I'd

  822. bet for

  823. a lot of

  824. us,

  825. a lot of

  826. what we

  827. love is

  828. because we

  829. saw someone

  830. else love

  831. that thing

  832. first.

  833. They walked

  834. us through

  835. why baseball

  836. is a

  837. beautiful game

  838. and why

  839. violin is

  840. just a

  841. beautiful

  842. instrument.

  843. Sometimes

  844. you need

  845. to watch

  846. someone love

  847. something so

  848. that you

  849. can love

  850. it yourself.

  851. And that's

  852. the effect

  853. that we

  854. ought to

  855. have

  856. in our

  857. disciples.

  858. Because

  859. really without

  860. it we

  861. lose all

  862. power for

  863. obeying.

  864. I love

  865. this analogy

  866. from this

  867. author,

  868. Barry Cooper,

  869. who imagines

  870. a dancer.

  871. She's

  872. dancing

  873. beautifully

  874. with poise

  875. and style

  876. and grace.

  877. More

  878. importantly,

  879. she's

  880. dancing

  881. with so

  882. much

  883. joy.

  884. You can

  885. just see

  886. it right

  887. on her

  888. face.

  889. She's

  890. just lost

  891. in the

  892. moment.

  893. And you

  894. look a

  895. little closer

  896. and you

  897. figure out

  898. why.

  899. She's got

  900. some earbuds

  901. in.

  902. And she's

  903. listening to

  904. the music

  905. that she

  906. loves the

  907. most in

  908. this world.

  909. she's

  910. totally

  911. captured

  912. by what

  913. she is

  914. hearing.

  915. Now a

  916. second person

  917. comes in

  918. and she

  919. watches the

  920. first person

  921. dance and

  922. she's so

  923. compelled

  924. that she

  925. thinks to

  926. herself,

  927. gee, I'd

  928. love to

  929. dance like

  930. that.

  931. So watching

  932. her, she

  933. tries to

  934. mimic her

  935. moves,

  936. her style,

  937. her grace.

  938. And maybe

  939. it works a

  940. little bit at

  941. first, but

  942. there's a

  943. clear difference

  944. and a

  945. clear problem.

  946. She doesn't

  947. hear the

  948. music.

  949. The music

  950. isn't driving

  951. her dancing.

  952. And so the

  953. movement is

  954. clunky,

  955. hesitant,

  956. self-conscious.

  957. It doesn't

  958. really seem

  959. like she's

  960. enjoying

  961. herself.

  962. And so

  963. all in all

  964. she just

  965. quits.

  966. She packs

  967. up her

  968. bags and

  969. goes home

  970. while the

  971. first one

  972. is still

  973. going strong.

  974. Cooper

  975. continues,

  976. making

  977. disciples

  978. of Jesus

  979. Christ falls

  980. short of

  981. its goal.

  982. If all

  983. that we're

  984. telling people

  985. to do is

  986. to copy

  987. our moves,

  988. study the

  989. Bible,

  990. go evangelize,

  991. fight sin,

  992. go to church,

  993. pray more,

  994. while we do

  995. relatively

  996. little to

  997. help them

  998. hear the

  999. music,

  1000. the beautiful

  1001. music that

  1002. must drive it

  1003. all.

  1004. It's the

  1005. song of

  1006. Christ,

  1007. a love

  1008. and an

  1009. adoration

  1010. of Christ.

  1011. If we

  1012. are teaching

  1013. disciples to

  1014. obey everything

  1015. that Jesus

  1016. has commanded,

  1017. it must

  1018. entail

  1019. teaching others,

  1020. helping others

  1021. to love,

  1022. adore Christ

  1023. for who he

  1024. really is.

  1025. For without

  1026. hearing that

  1027. music,

  1028. they're never

  1029. going to

  1030. last.

  1031. And so we

  1032. have knowledge,

  1033. right?

  1034. We have

  1035. knowledge that

  1036. blooms into

  1037. love,

  1038. that finally

  1039. ought to

  1040. produce the

  1041. fruit of

  1042. obedience.

  1043. We don't

  1044. just make

  1045. hearers of

  1046. the law,

  1047. but we

  1048. make doers

  1049. of the law,

  1050. the whole

  1051. law,

  1052. not just

  1053. the easy

  1054. commands or

  1055. our preferred

  1056. commands,

  1057. but all of

  1058. Jesus'

  1059. commands.

  1060. We teach

  1061. them to

  1062. obey.

  1063. And there's

  1064. a really

  1065. part of

  1066. your life

  1067. where you

  1068. can hang

  1069. up a sign

  1070. that says

  1071. does not

  1072. apply.

  1073. Jesus'

  1074. commands

  1075. does not

  1076. apply here.

  1077. How we

  1078. should parent,

  1079. how we

  1080. should spend

  1081. our money,

  1082. how we

  1083. should relate

  1084. to our

  1085. boss at

  1086. work,

  1087. Jesus has

  1088. given us

  1089. commands to

  1090. obey,

  1091. and so we

  1092. teach others

  1093. to do it

  1094. all faithfully.

  1095. So in all

  1096. things,

  1097. we seek to

  1098. make well-rounded

  1099. disciples.

  1100. By what?

  1101. By addressing

  1102. a disciple's

  1103. head,

  1104. heart,

  1105. and hands.

  1106. Head,

  1107. heart,

  1108. and hands.

  1109. Without

  1110. neglecting

  1111. any,

  1112. you have

  1113. to address

  1114. all three.

  1115. If you

  1116. only address

  1117. the head,

  1118. making sure

  1119. that your

  1120. disciple

  1121. thinks all

  1122. the right

  1123. things,

  1124. then you

  1125. end up

  1126. with a

  1127. malformed,

  1128. bobble-headed

  1129. disciple.

  1130. One that's

  1131. good at

  1132. Bible trivia

  1133. or theology

  1134. quizzes,

  1135. but has

  1136. no love

  1137. in his

  1138. heart or

  1139. service towards

  1140. others.

  1141. If you

  1142. address only

  1143. the heart,

  1144. making sure

  1145. that your

  1146. disciple feels

  1147. all the

  1148. right things,

  1149. then you

  1150. end up

  1151. with a

  1152. malformed,

  1153. big-hearted

  1154. disciple,

  1155. full of

  1156. feelings,

  1157. but easily

  1158. carried about

  1159. by every

  1160. wind of

  1161. doctrine,

  1162. easily

  1163. discouraged,

  1164. easily

  1165. deceived,

  1166. or only

  1167. really acting,

  1168. one that

  1169. acts only

  1170. when he or

  1171. she feels

  1172. like it.

  1173. if you

  1174. address the

  1175. hands only,

  1176. only making

  1177. sure that

  1178. your disciple

  1179. does all

  1180. the right

  1181. things,

  1182. then you

  1183. have a

  1184. malformed,

  1185. busy-handed

  1186. disciple,

  1187. one who

  1188. just does

  1189. a bunch

  1190. of stuff

  1191. without

  1192. really

  1193. knowing

  1194. why,

  1195. or without

  1196. any love.

  1197. Like a

  1198. three-legged

  1199. stool,

  1200. we cannot

  1201. take one

  1202. leg without

  1203. the whole

  1204. thing toppling

  1205. over.

  1206. And so

  1207. this is

  1208. our goal,

  1209. to do

  1210. what Paul

  1211. writes,

  1212. when he

  1213. writes in

  1214. 1 Corinthians

  1215. 1.28,

  1216. him we

  1217. proclaim,

  1218. warning

  1219. everyone

  1220. and teaching

  1221. everyone

  1222. with all

  1223. wisdom

  1224. that we

  1225. may present

  1226. everyone

  1227. mature

  1228. in Christ.

  1229. To present

  1230. our disciples,

  1231. to help each

  1232. other be

  1233. mature in

  1234. Christ,

  1235. is the

  1236. goal that

  1237. we strive

  1238. for with

  1239. all our

  1240. energy and

  1241. effort.

  1242. That might

  1243. sound like a

  1244. lot to hold

  1245. together,

  1246. but don't

  1247. let that scare

  1248. you off from

  1249. this desire

  1250. to make

  1251. disciples.

  1252. And I love

  1253. how Pastor

  1254. Mark Dever

  1255. puts it

  1256. simply.

  1257. It's simply,

  1258. disciple making

  1259. is simply

  1260. helping others

  1261. follow Jesus

  1262. by doing

  1263. deliberate

  1264. spiritual good

  1265. to them.

  1266. And with

  1267. that broad

  1268. kind of

  1269. definition,

  1270. there really

  1271. is no

  1272. single strategy

  1273. in making

  1274. disciples.

  1275. From taking

  1276. an unbeliever

  1277. believer to

  1278. a mature

  1279. believer.

  1280. And so

  1281. much of

  1282. what goes

  1283. on in

  1284. the life

  1285. of our

  1286. own

  1287. church,

  1288. of many

  1289. local

  1290. churches,

  1291. is fitting

  1292. in that

  1293. definition,

  1294. is making

  1295. disciples.

  1296. You are

  1297. discipling

  1298. others at

  1299. community group

  1300. when you share

  1301. a helpful

  1302. insight,

  1303. or when you

  1304. model vulnerability.

  1305. You disciple

  1306. others in the

  1307. church when you

  1308. model how to

  1309. pray, when you

  1310. go to prayer

  1311. meetings, when you

  1312. go to the

  1313. Wednesday prayer

  1314. meeting, or

  1315. pre-service

  1316. prayer.

  1317. You even

  1318. disciple others

  1319. when you

  1320. simply show up

  1321. to church and

  1322. sing as

  1323. passionately as

  1324. you can to

  1325. the worship of

  1326. God and other

  1327. people can hear

  1328. that.

  1329. And so I

  1330. believe all,

  1331. most if not

  1332. all of you

  1333. already engage

  1334. in some form

  1335. of discipleship,

  1336. and you do it

  1337. so well.

  1338. But this

  1339. morning I

  1340. really want to

  1341. highlight a

  1342. particular form

  1343. of discipleship.

  1344. And it's

  1345. the one-on-one,

  1346. one-on-a-few,

  1347. life-on-life

  1348. discipleship.

  1349. When you

  1350. think of an

  1351. example of

  1352. a disciple

  1353. in Scripture,

  1354. who do you

  1355. think of?

  1356. I guess that

  1357. many of us

  1358. would first

  1359. think of

  1360. Jesus'

  1361. twelve

  1362. disciples.

  1363. When Jesus,

  1364. the eternal

  1365. word of God,

  1366. God in the

  1367. flesh,

  1368. he decided

  1369. to begin

  1370. a new

  1371. religious

  1372. movement that

  1373. would spread

  1374. to billions

  1375. and billions

  1376. of people,

  1377. changing the

  1378. course of

  1379. world history

  1380. as we know

  1381. it,

  1382. how many

  1383. people did

  1384. he think

  1385. to call

  1386. first to

  1387. disciple?

  1388. It was

  1389. twelve.

  1390. It was just

  1391. twelve people

  1392. over three

  1393. years.

  1394. Not only

  1395. that, but

  1396. even within

  1397. the twelve,

  1398. he had an

  1399. even more

  1400. select group

  1401. with the

  1402. inner three,

  1403. Peter,

  1404. James,

  1405. and John.

  1406. Then you

  1407. have examples

  1408. like Paul

  1409. and Timothy.

  1410. Spiritual

  1411. father Paul

  1412. invested in

  1413. Timothy from

  1414. a young age,

  1415. really as a

  1416. father figure,

  1417. calling him

  1418. my true

  1419. child in

  1420. the faith.

  1421. He brings

  1422. Timothy

  1423. alongside him

  1424. on missionary

  1425. journeys.

  1426. He gives

  1427. him direct

  1428. and personal

  1429. counsel on

  1430. doctrine and

  1431. character.

  1432. He gives

  1433. him a lot

  1434. of leeway

  1435. and a lot

  1436. of room

  1437. to just

  1438. explore ministry.

  1439. tree.

  1440. He gives

  1441. him real

  1442. responsibility.

  1443. Moses

  1444. and Joshua,

  1445. Elijah

  1446. and Elisha,

  1447. Priscilla

  1448. and Aquila

  1449. and Apollos,

  1450. examples of

  1451. this kind

  1452. of intimate,

  1453. highly

  1454. relational,

  1455. intentional,

  1456. life-on-life

  1457. discipleship is

  1458. woven throughout

  1459. scripture.

  1460. And really

  1461. that kind

  1462. of apprenticeship,

  1463. highly relational

  1464. model of

  1465. discipleship is

  1466. the exact

  1467. kind of

  1468. practice,

  1469. the early

  1470. church adopted

  1471. and implemented,

  1472. integrated into

  1473. the culture of

  1474. their church.

  1475. And so

  1476. making disciples

  1477. requires this

  1478. level of

  1479. focused investment

  1480. in just a few

  1481. people.

  1482. That's all you're

  1483. called to do,

  1484. just invest in a

  1485. few people.

  1486. Why?

  1487. And why does it

  1488. require only a

  1489. few people?

  1490. Because they

  1491. know,

  1492. we know,

  1493. that making a

  1494. disciple is not

  1495. like manufacturing

  1496. a rushed,

  1497. mass-produced

  1498. item sold on

  1499. Timu for a

  1500. buck.

  1501. But making a

  1502. disciple is

  1503. more akin to

  1504. the work of a

  1505. master craftsman

  1506. who is painstakingly

  1507. slow,

  1508. intense,

  1509. careful.

  1510. He pours his

  1511. heart into

  1512. this labor.

  1513. If it's that

  1514. much work,

  1515. though,

  1516. to make a

  1517. single disciple,

  1518. then why

  1519. would we ever

  1520. want to do

  1521. this?

  1522. First,

  1523. making disciples

  1524. is required

  1525. for all.

  1526. When I first

  1527. joined staff

  1528. here at

  1529. Trinity,

  1530. one of my

  1531. first personal

  1532. projects,

  1533. I guess,

  1534. was to

  1535. come up

  1536. with a

  1537. discipleship

  1538. program.

  1539. The gist

  1540. essentially would

  1541. be to come

  1542. up with a

  1543. training program

  1544. where we

  1545. would hand

  1546. select and

  1547. train a

  1548. specific group

  1549. of guys and

  1550. girls that we

  1551. present to the

  1552. church as

  1553. quote-unquote

  1554. the disciples.

  1555. If you wanted

  1556. to be discipled,

  1557. then great.

  1558. We have this

  1559. list.

  1560. Go and ask any

  1561. of these girls,

  1562. any of these

  1563. guys.

  1564. And as the

  1565. pastoral team

  1566. and I, we were

  1567. just wrestling

  1568. over that plan,

  1569. we believe that

  1570. the Lord led

  1571. us not to

  1572. implement that.

  1573. And I'm so

  1574. glad that he

  1575. did.

  1576. Because looking

  1577. back, I think

  1578. it might have

  1579. just reinforced

  1580. this false

  1581. belief that

  1582. disciple-making

  1583. is just

  1584. reserved for

  1585. the elite,

  1586. for the all

  1587. mature, the

  1588. all wise,

  1589. the Christian

  1590. superheroes.

  1591. Rather,

  1592. making disciples

  1593. disciples is a

  1594. non-negotiable,

  1595. non-optional

  1596. task for every

  1597. single one of

  1598. us.

  1599. Put simply,

  1600. disciples make

  1601. disciples.

  1602. To be a

  1603. disciple of Jesus

  1604. Christ, you have

  1605. to be making

  1606. disciples.

  1607. Don't just take

  1608. it from me, but

  1609. hear scripture from

  1610. Ephesians 4.

  1611. Paul writes that

  1612. he gave the

  1613. apostles, the

  1614. prophets, the

  1615. evangelists, the

  1616. shepherds, and

  1617. teachers to equip

  1618. the saints for

  1619. the work of

  1620. ministry, for

  1621. building up the

  1622. body of Christ

  1623. until we all

  1624. attain to the

  1625. unity of the

  1626. faith and of the

  1627. knowledge of the

  1628. Son of God, to

  1629. mature manhood, to

  1630. the measure of the

  1631. stature of the

  1632. fullness of Christ,

1633. so that we may no

  1634. longer be children

  1635. tossed to and fro

  1636. by the waves and

  1637. carried about by

  1638. every wind of

  1639. doctrine, by human

  1640. cunning, by craftiness

  1641. in deceitful schemes.

  1642. Christians, what is

  1643. the ministry of the

  1644. apostles, prophets,

  1645. evangelists, shepherds,

  1646. and teachers?

  1647. It's not that they

1648. are to do all the

  1649. ministry themselves.

  1650. Rather, their

  1651. ministry, Sean and

  1652. my ministry, is to

  1653. equip you for

  1654. ministry.

  1655. Do you know that

  1656. you, Christian, yes

  1657. you, you have a

  1658. ministry that you

  1659. are responsible for?

  1660. Do you speak like

  1661. that?

  1662. Do you use that

  1663. kind of vocabulary?

  1664. Do you feel

  1665. responsible for and

  1666. pray for your

  1667. personal ministry?

  1668. Today, we stand on

  1669. the shoulders of

  1670. faithful men called

  1671. the reformers from

  1672. over 500 years ago

  1673. who saw very

  1674. clearly ministry is

  1675. not limited to just

  1676. the priesthood.

  1677. And Bible reading

  1678. and Bible teaching

  1679. should not and

  1680. cannot be limited to

  1681. just the priesthood.

  1682. No, no, no.

1683. They saw that if a

  1684. church operates under

  1685. that belief that it's

  1686. only the priesthood who

1687. is to do all the

  1688. work, really, then

  1689. that church is an

  1690. anemic shell of what

  1691. it could be.

  1692. It is an atrophied,

  1693. disjointed, unhealthy

  1694. body.

1695. But this is what a

  1696. healthy body is

  1697. supposed to look like.

  1698. Paul continues in

  1699. Ephesians 4.

  1700. Rather, we are to

1701. grow up in every way

1702. into him who is the

  1703. head, into Christ.

  1704. When each part, when

  1705. each part is working

  1706. properly, makes the

  1707. body grow, so it

  1708. builds itself up in

  1709. love.

  1710. When each part, each

  1711. part is growing

  1712. properly, then the

  1713. church flourishes.

  1714. When each joint comes

  1715. together held together

1716. by love and a mutual

  1717. desire to help each

  1718. other follow Jesus, then

1719. we will grow to a full

  1720. stature in Christ.

  1721. That's really what a

  1722. culture of discipleship

1723. can do in the life of a

  1724. local church.

  1725. Secondly, why should we

  1726. make disciples?

  1727. Discipleship can change

  1728. someone's life.

  1729. Why?

1730. Because we are far more

  1731. impressionable than you

  1732. might think.

  1733. You might even consider

  1734. yourself to be.

  1735. Every conversation that

  1736. you have with somebody,

  1737. every time you model

  1738. behavior for someone,

1739. they are, even just a

  1740. little bit, shaped by

  1741. it.

  1742. Daily, we are

  1743. discipled by the people

  1744. around us.

  1745. the messages that we

  1746. hear and the screens

  1747. that we watch.

  1748. We pick up thought

  1749. patterns and ideas and

  1750. passions and loves and

  1751. patterns of speech and

  1752. even little habits from

  1753. the people that are

  1754. around us.

1755. But the reality is that

  1756. as Christians, we don't

1757. live in a neutral world.

1758. We live in a world that

1759. is ruled by the power, by

1760. the prince of the power

  1761. of the air.

1762. An enemy that he is

1763. doing all that he can to

  1764. disciple us away from

  1765. Christ.

1766. What are you discipled by?

1767. What are you discipled by,

  1768. friends?

1769. I can guarantee you that

  1770. the American church lacks

1771. maturity and they gave the

1772. answers that they did in

  1773. that earlier survey because

1774. they are more discipled by

  1775. TikTok influencers, novels

1776. like The Shack, and their

  1777. Enneagram numbers than by

  1778. their pastors and

  1779. scripture and their church

  1780. members.

1781. But what is then the

1782. lifeline that we have as

1783. Christians in a world that

1784. is doing all that it can to

  1785. destroy our faith?

  1786. It is simply the

  1787. discipleship of the church

  1788. through the word.

1789. You can have that kind of

  1790. life-changing impact on

  1791. somebody.

  1792. Helping them follow Jesus

  1793. better.

  1794. And it's a myth.

1795. You don't have to be an

  1796. expert.

  1797. You don't have to have a

1798. seminary degree to have this

  1799. kind of impact.

1800. Pastor Tim Challies, he makes

  1801. this helpful observation.

1802. The reality is that the great

1803. majority of the help people

1804. need or the counsel they

1805. seek do not require the input

1806. of experts, but merely of

1807. someone who loves God and

  1808. has their Bible open.

1809. Does it not astound you that

1810. God is so kind to use weak

1811. vessels like us that you

1812. could have that kind of

  1813. outsized impact on someone's

  1814. life?

  1815. And honestly, I am a great

  1816. example of that.

1817. I am exhibit A of the benefits

  1818. of discipleship.

  1819. I'm not much.

1820. But what I am today is by

1821. the grace of God through the

1822. ministry of specific men who

  1823. have invested in me.

1824. In me, if there are any right

  1825. thoughts, any right loves,

1826. any right actions, it's simply

  1827. because I caught that.

  1828. I saw it modeled.

1829. I had it taught to me.

1830. I owe my life to the numerous

1831. men who have discipled me.

1832. Maybe one off, two off,

1833. reaching out to me, buying a

1834. meal, asking me how my walk

  1835. with God is going.

1836. And I owe my life especially

1837. to the few specific men, both

  1838. pastors and non-pastors, who

  1839. have deeply, intentionally

1840. invested, poured into my life,

1841. talked with me for hours on end,

1842. who've dealt with my stupidity,

  1843. who've answered my questions,

1844. who have laughed with me and

  1845. cried with me.

1846. The reality is I hardly knew

1847. anything when I first came to

  1848. Trinity.

  1849. Sean and I reflected a little

1850. while back on a conversation we

1851. had when I was first beginning to

  1852. be discipled by Sean.

1853. And I told him how I felt like I

1854. know so little of scripture.

  1855. I don't know anything.

  1856. I don't think I could be a

  1857. pastor.

  1858. I don't think I could pass these

  1859. ordination exams.

1860. I think you got the wrong man,

  1861. Sean.

  1862. But I passed them.

1863. And I was ordained predominantly,

1864. I want to say, because of my bi-weekly

  1865. Saturday morning meetings with

  1866. Sean.

1867. Honestly, I have been shaped

1868. more, formed more as a

1869. disciple and as a husband and

1870. as a father by those morning

1871. meetings more than just the

1872. seminary classes that I'm taking.

1873. Looking back, it's astonishing to

1874. me how much that I could answer

1875. on my final oral exam at

1876. ordination simply on the basis of

1877. just remembering what Sean said that

  1878. one time.

1879. My own life has been transformed

  1880. by discipleship.

1881. And God in his kindness could use

1882. you in the same exact way for

  1883. another.

  1884. Speaking of church leadership,

1885. making disciples is the leadership

  1886. pipeline.

1887. That's why we do it.

1888. Where else are we going to find our

  1889. next pastor?

1890. Where else are we going to find our

  1891. next missionary?

1892. Our next deacon or deaconess?

  1893. Our ministry leaders.

  1894. Establishing the culture of

1895. discipleship in our local church

1896. is setting up the necessary

1897. pipeline to be able to call

1898. faithful men and women to the

  1899. work of ministry.

1900. Unless you feel like this

  1901. application of making disciples

1902. internally pulls us away from

  1903. making disciples externally, I'd

1904. really just argue that it does the

  1905. very opposite.

1906. The church cannot make progress

1907. externally to the ends of the

1908. earth unless internally we are not

1909. making disciples mature enough to

  1910. go.

1911. Outward mission and outward church

1912. planting, we have big dreams for

1913. that as a church, but that all

  1914. depends on inward discipleship.

1915. So maybe you are convinced that as a

1916. disciple of Jesus, you need to make

  1917. disciples.

1918. I hope you even want to.

1919. But you still nonetheless have this

  1920. nagging feeling.

1921. This is way over my head.

1922. The excuses fly too easily off the

  1923. tongue.

1924. I'm way too young for this.

  1925. I don't know much.

  1926. I'm not a good speaker and I'm not

1927. even a good enough Christian.

  1928. I'm not impressive.

1929. Why would anyone listen to me?

1930. That position of humility is

  1931. appropriate.

1932. Who is adequate to make even a

1933. single disciple of Jesus Christ

1934. teaching them to obey all that he

1935. has commanded when we can't even do

  1936. it ourselves?

1937. What qualifies a sinner like you and

1938. me to be able to do a work like

  1939. this?

1940. What qualifications do you have?

1941. What qualifies us is not our skill,

  1942. our righteousness, our knowledge,

1943. our personality, our wit, our

  1944. education.

1945. But what qualifies us is not what we

1946. have done, but what Christ has done

1947. for us, brothers and sisters.

1948. Because Christ has died for our sins.

1949. We are no longer the old sinful man or

  1950. woman, but you.

1951. You are a new creation.

1952. You were once enslaved to sin and

1953. trapped in the patterns of this

1954. world, but in place of what was old,

  1955. Christ brought something new.

  1956. And gospel transformation has

1957. overtaken your life, flipped your

  1958. life upside down.

1959. He has taken the heart of stone that

1960. was in your heart for, what,

1961. decades, and he's replaced it with a

1962. heart of flesh so that it's soft

  1963. towards him.

1964. That you love him and obey him.

  1965. That's what qualifies you.

1966. What qualifies you is not that you are

  1967. an impressive, put-together Christian

1968. that has all their ducks in order.

1969. But that qualifies you is that when you

1970. approach Jesus, you do so rightly.

1971. Prostrate before him, grabbing not even

1972. his torso or his legs, his feet humbly,

1973. desperately, you approach in the right

  1974. way.

1975. That's what people need to copy.

1976. That's what people need to model after.

1977. We want them to capture that vision and

1978. see Christ as the glorious God.

1979. What qualifies you is that Emmanuel,

1980. God with us, that he's promised to be with

1981. us to the end of the age in verse 20,

1982. that he is in the business of making

1983. disciples, that he is the one who does the

1984. magic of disciple making, that he is the

1985. one who does the heavy lifting.

  1986. 1 Corinthians 3, I planted a Paulus water,

1987. but God gave the growth.

1988. So neither he who plants nor he who waters

1989. is anything, but only God who gives the

  1990. growth.

1991. So knowing that discipleship is not about

1992. you, it's not about you.

  1993. It's not, you're entirely replaceable.

1994. And that's something that I need to get

1995. more into my own thick skull.

1996. But yet still knowing that God in his

1997. kindness chooses to work in and through

1998. you, that he wants to work in and through

1999. broken vessels, jars of clay like us,

2000. then we ought to put less stock, less and

2001. less stock on what we can do and what God can

2002. do in and through us.

2003. So we go forth in faith to make disciples

  2004. of Jesus Christ.

2005. It's okay, you want to be faithful, but how?

  2006. How?

  2007. What do I do?

2008. A few things I just want to recommend you

  2009. quickly.

2010. If you've never been discipled, the

2011. recommended first step is to find somebody

2012. of the same sex to disciple you.

2013. And it's fine if you don't really know

  2014. them all that well.

2015. If there's somebody out there in this very

2016. church whom you see that, if you just

2017. talked with them and read the Bible with

2018. them, that you learn a lot, ask them.

2019. Ask them to disciple you.

2020. And trust me, you all have a lot to learn.

2021. We all have a lot to learn.

2022. It comes with the territory of being

  2023. sinners.

2024. And while you're being discipled, resist, if

2025. you feel that, if you resist the urge to just

  2026. settle into being discipled.

  2027. As if that's it.

2028. But use your being discipled to then fuel you to

  2029. make disciples.

2030. So then take the next step to find somebody of the

  2031. same sex to disciple.

2032. In his commentary in Matthew, D.A.

2033. Carson, he notes that, this is like the third time

2034. you've probably heard this, that the main emphasis is

2035. clearly on the verb make disciples, right?

2036. But we also should not neglect the participle going.

2037. We are the ones to take the initiative in going to the

2038. nations and going to others in disciple making.

2039. Not just expecting things to just fall in our lap.

2040. So when you're looking and praying for someone to

2041. disciple, then find somebody that you're just a little

2042. bit ahead of, at least a little bit ahead of.

2043. You don't have to be light years ahead, but just a little

  2044. bit ahead.

  2045. If you're a young believer, then you're a little bit ahead

  2046. of your unbelieving friend.

2047. If you're five years out of college, then you're a little

2048. bit ahead of the recent grad.

  2049. If you're a parent of a teenager, you're a little bit

2050. ahead of the parent with a toddler.

2051. It's not just about age, though.

2052. Don't let them despise you for your youth.

2053. If you've been faithfully walking with the Lord and have

2054. faithfully studied the Bible for 10 years at age 30, you have

2055. a lot to teach the recent 60-year-old convert.

2056. If they're humble enough to receive it.

2057. All right, speaking of which, evaluate.

2058. Evaluate whether that person you want to disciple is this

  2059. acronym FAT, right?

2060. Faithful, available, and teachable, right?

  2061. It's an acronym.

2062. Pray about it and then simply ask.

  2063. Hey, brother.

  2064. Hey, sister.

2065. Would you want to just get together regularly with me and open up

2066. scripture and study it with me?

  2067. It's not rocket science.

  2068. Dive together into scripture.

2069. Go slowly through a book of the Bible.

2070. Read a helpful Christian book if that's necessary.

  2071. Pray together.

2072. And most importantly, enjoy and behold Jesus together.

2073. Share an earbud with them so that they too can hear the music, that they

2074. would be compelled to love and cherish Christ.

2075. Next, disciple in the context of the local church.

  2076. Right?

2077. There are too many benefits of discipling within the local church.

2078. But really quickly, first, these are the people that you've already

  2079. covenanted with.

2080. We haven't made a covenant promise with every Christian in this world.

2081. But you have made a specific promise to these very people that you will help

  2082. them follow Jesus.

2083. Secondly, it builds off of the discipleship structure that we have in the

2084. life of the church, right?

2085. The regular life of a church, which includes preaching and community groups,

2086. Sunday classes, prayer meetings, utilize it in your discipling.

2087. How much easier does the work of discipling become when you can just build off of that

2088. instead of reinventing the wheel?

2089. You could say, hey, you know, let's go to this Christian formation class together.

2090. Oh, if you don't know how to pray and you want to learn, just come to a prayer

  2091. meeting with me.

2092. Oh, what did you think about that sermon?

2093. What did you agree with or disagree with?

2094. And thirdly and importantly, discipling in the local church provides much-needed

  2095. accountability.

2096. Discipleship is a great responsibility.

2097. You're right to feel it.

2098. And you will be held accountable for the things that you do teach.

2099. Discipleship outside of a local church, it can drift into whatever the

  2100. discipler prefers.

2101. But discipling in the context of a local body where disciplers and disciples are

2102. accountable to the eldership, the shared common faith, and to the whole church

2103. body, that acts as a reliable safety net.

2104. So if you want accountability in discipling somebody, which I assure you, you want that,

2105. disciple them into the church.

2106. But also disciple them by opening up your life to them.

  2107. Right?

2108. Discipleship is best caught, not taught.

2109. And a cardinal rule of all writing is to show, not tell.

2110. Don't just explain what it means to be a faithful husband or a faithful wife, but show them.

  2111. Right?

2112. What better way to teach younger women to love their husband and children, to be self-controlled,

2113. pure, working at home, kind, and submissive to their husbands, as Titus 2 says, than to be

  2114. invited into our homes.

2115. What better way to teach a young man how to lead his family than just to invite him over

2116. and show him how you lead family worship?

2117. Maybe you feel like you're too busy to disciple someone right now.

2118. But very easily, you can just invite him into what you've got going on in your life.

2119. Do you have to hit the grocery store?

  2120. Do some yard work?

2121. Make your next year's budget?

  2122. Do some yard work?

2123. Do some yard work about discipleship?

2124. Do you get all fired up about it until you get slammed with four projects at work?

2125. Or the person that you're discipling cancels on you for the fifth time?

2126. Or you feel like your discipling just doesn't have that much impact?

2127. Or even the person that you're discipling is continually pushing back on you, disagreeing

2128. with you, then I encourage you to disciple with perseverance. So much fruit can occur if you just

2129. persevere. Pastor David Mathis shares his experience about disciple making, and this is

2130. true of myself. A common denominator of my disciple making experience over the years

2131. has been that in the end, the investment proves manifestly more fruitful than it typically feels

2132. in the process. Of course, it can be wise to stop a discipling relationship. You need not needlessly

2133. push through. Know that you are not solely responsible for this person's salvation, right?

2134. It takes a village. Someone else can come in and disciple that person, and if a relationship

2135. doesn't work out, a discipleship relationship doesn't work out, learn from it, and then simply

2136. move on to the next person. Don't stop making disciples after a few bumps in the road. And

2137. finally, don't stop making disciples even when you are not here. The pastoral team, we're under

2138. no illusion that many, if not most of you guys, will not be members at Trinity Cambridge for the

2139. next 10, 20, 30 years. We know that we are a church in a transient area. Many of you guys will go to

2140. different cities, different churches, even in different countries. Recently, again, we were

2141. lamenting together just how hard it is. And it is really hard to lose the people, to see them move away,

2142. and to lose them to other churches in other places. And yet we take solace that when you do go to these

2143. other churches, these other cities, in these other countries, you will carry the message of the gospel

2144. with you, and that you will be faithful to the task of making disciples. You will meet up with folks to

2145. study scripture, to pray, to disciple them, teaching them to obey all that Jesus has commanded. You will

2146. work to reverse this discipleship crisis that we have here in America for the glory of God by making

2147. mature disciples who obey everything. You will make disciples not to prove your worth, not to have God to

2148. finally accept you, but because you already have that assurance. You already have the assurance that God

2149. will walk with you until the end of the age, but you make disciples simply because you love Jesus.

2150. And he, you know, he's just the best thing. And you want others to see that too.

2151. And so when I remember in heaven that I'll get to speak with all the people that you have discipled,

2152. the people that you have encouraged and loved, poured your life into, and they share the testimony of your

2153. faithfulness, my heart fills with joy. So whether we are here in Cambridge, in San Diego, Tokyo, or

2154. Ankara, Turkey, right, we make it our lifelong aim to make disciples and to love him. Let's pray.

2155. Our heavenly Father, we do ask for your strength and power and grace to help us to be faithful to the

2156. task you have called us, that we would not look to the left, we would not look to the right, but that

2157. we would keep our eyes on the prize, that we would keep our eyes focused on the goal to be faithful to

2158. make disciples, to be your hands and feet here on earth. Lord, we are small and weak and foolish, and we

2159. make a mess of it so often. So Lord, please forgive us when we do. Please forgive us when we do. We've

2160. messed it up too often. But thank you, Lord, that you use, you invite us into the work of ministry.

2161. You're not just the frustrated dad who pulls away the tool from his son, saying, you're too slow,

2162. you're too incompetent, you're not good enough. But as a loving father, you invite us into the work,

2163. and you change us, transform us along the way. Thank you, Lord, for who you are and what you're

2164. doing. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
