The Lost Art of Seeking

Um couple of announcements that I have. Um first of all Our centennial service is coming up next next month. Amen.

Hundred years. A hundred years we are celebrating. And we're gonna celebrate big, right?

We're gonna have a we're gonna have a good uh Pentecostal service like we like we always do. We're also gonna have some food. And um so that that's the reason that we're asking people to to register.

Um last I checked, it was like last Monday, we were at about 200, and a lot of those names I don't even recognize are people from not not from the house or people from the past, which is great, but we want to celebrate with with the house as well. So register. I know people hate registering for things.

Just get over it, right? Just do it. Okay.

Um and and register so that your name is on the list and and and we we We know that we have capacity for you. Amen. Second announcement.

We talked about it a few weeks ago. But we are Uh we're we're we're trying to start a school of ministry, a school of Bible and ministry next year. Um PNEUMA Institute, that's kind of like the placeholder.

I don't know if we'll maybe we'll change it. But we said that we would have a meeting. We had a lot of interest.

We said that we would have kind of an interest meeting. Uh in October. We're gonna we're actually gonna change that date because I know a lot of our young adults are actually gonna be on their retreat.

Um so we're gonna do it October twenty-eighth. It's a Wednesday night at six PM if you're interested in hearing about What that looks like next year when we start this school, you can join us then. Amen.

That's all I got. I want to go to the word this morning in Matthew chapter 7. Matthew 7.

These are the words of Jesus. He's preaching his famous Sermon on the Mount. You can go ahead and stand with me.

Amen. Matthew 7, 7 through 11. Got it?

The word of God says, Ask, and it will be given to you. Seek, and you shall find. Knock, and it will be open to you.

For every one who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and the one who knocks, it will be opened Or which of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone. Or if he asks for a fish, we'll give him a serpent. If you them who are evil know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your father in heaven, who is good?

Give those things to those who ask. Let's pray. Heavenly Father, I thank you for this word that you've spoken over me, my God, that you have.

brought a conviction to me with, Lord. I pray, Father God, that in the same way that I have received it, Father God, your people would receive it this morning. Lord, I pray that you would be on my lips, my God, that there would be nothing of me, my God, but your Spirit only.

Delivering your word in Jesus' name. Amen. Amen.

You can take your seat this morning. Um I kind of want to know as I was reading this this uh passage, uh you don't have to raise your hand, but how many of you actually believe these words of Jesus? Amen.

I would assume most of us. I would assume many of us. But I also think some people might wrestle with this a little bit because you think back to the last time that you asked Jesus for something and the answer was no. Um you think back to the to the time where where you knocked and knocked and knocked and waited and the door never opened.

And so I I think a lot of us Um we do believe these words, but I also believe that there's some people who kind of wrestle with this. And those of us who do believe it, we say, Of course, Pastor, I I believe these words of Jesus. It's it's the Bible.

But um there still comes Some caveats that we would add to this. Like when we read a text like this to say our children, there's more that we feel like we need to add. Some commentary that we need to add because of our experience, because we know that God doesn't say yes to everything that we ask of him.

We know that we don't always find the answers that we're looking for. We know that sometimes we just have to live purely by faith. We know that there's going to be times where we wait for certain doors to open and they're not going to open.

And so I think many of us do believe these words, but we have to define what it means to ask, seek, and knock. And the quick answer is that if you ask God according to his will for the things of God, he's going to give those things to you. If you seek him, you have to seek his face, you have to seek his presence.

Seek first the kingdom of heaven And when we knock on these doors, we have to knock on the ones that God is leading us to, not just some random door that looks good, right? So those are the caveats that we would add to this. And I believe Many Christians are in danger of losing the ability to do this.

We're losing the art of asking and seeking and waiting on the Lord. I think some of us have already lost it. But um but it's I I believe that we're kind of living in a culture that is that is in danger of us.

Losing the ability to do this. I I I asked um I I titled the message this morning this morning, The Art of Seeking. The Art of Seeking.

Are y'all hot? Amen. I don't know what to do about it, but yeah.

All right. Um you know I I wanna I wanna kinda spend a little bit of time talking about something that is one of the most relevant like conversations in our culture today. Some of you are probably tired of hearing about this.

But because it's so relevant, I think it worked uh it's worthy of at least a sermon. Um You you made I don't know if anybody heard a couple weeks ago or a few weeks ago of the the former anthropic employee who quit his job An anthropic is one of the the major uh companies of uh in the AI space. They make cloud, which is similar to ChatGBT.

ChatGBT's from OpenAI. That's the other major player in the AI space. And this this former employee, his name was or is uh Jacob Coxon.

And he was an AI researcher and and uh he helped uh train really advanced AI models. And he essentially quit on the conviction that what he was helping these companies develop Could actually be the thing that causes our extinction. He went as far to say, in ten years, we could all be dead.

And if there's kids in here, I'm not trying to scare you. Okay. I think he was he was pretty alarmist.

He was pretty extreme. I'm not here to say that I I agree with him. I'm not saying that I'm anti-AI.

I'm just saying that his thoughts got the attention of the world. And even a lot of these CEOs came out and acknowledged that man, we maybe we need to slow down this AI thing Because they acknowledge that what they are developing is incredibly powerful and their ability to learn is incredibly fast And we we live in this world right now. It's not just coming anymore.

We're in it. We live in a world where cars are driving themselves. Pastor Danny just bought one Sold is soul.

We live in a world where robots are being developed to do household chores. Tesla's uh making this humanoid robot, and I ain't gonna lie, man. I saw an ad for it.

I sent it to Melissa. I said, babe, just hear me out. Before she could even hear me out, she was like, I am not bringing that thing into my house.

I said, We'll anoint it, we'll pray over it. But that that's the world that we live in. I I I use AI, I ain't gonna lie, every day.

I do. Because it's it's efficient and it's so easy. And I know all y'all use it too because I see all everybody's Facebook Chat GBT uh flyers.

Y'all look the same. Think you're being creative. But I I use it I use AI to create uh I've used it to create uh web pages and and draft emails and make reports.

I use it in my I use it uh in my real estate business for automation. When we bought a when we bought it we bought a house earlier this year and we've been using ChatGBT to help design like every room. Like like mock up these designs of how we want to design it, how we want to you know furnish it and all that stuff.

Um I helped. I I asked Chat GBT to help me um make my home gym, which is dope by the way. It really helped me Um also, I I I I'm I'm just being transparent.

I'm laying it all out, okay? Uh I asked Chat GBT to kind of be my my um My my diet coach and some of y'all asked me Pastor have you lost weight? I've lost 18 pounds in three months Okay, s some people do it with a little shot, uh other people other people do it with chat GBT.

Uh And uh so so so that's what's that's what's helped me and um I I use AI admittedly more than I want to. Kind of like my phone. I use my phone more more than I want to I don't use it to write sermons, by the way, if you're if you're wondering.

But we live in this world where more and more people are using this technology every single day. Four years ago, we had to Google stuff. Like like our kids are gonna be telling their kids back in my day we had to Google stuff and we had to open up different web pages to look for things and if we couldn't find it we had to go back and and and look more and it was horrible Many of us grew up in this in this culture, this microwave culture as it is, but today like information is is instant.

We get we I mean we get answers in a second and and you know what's scary to me and sad to me at the same time many people use Chat GBT as a friend They use it to have these really uh personal conversations with. They treat ChatGBT as a counselor, as a therapist Many people are so lonely that they need something to connect with, and so they connect with a robot. And so while the whole world is speculating, is AI gonna replace our jobs?

Is it gonna take over the world? I'm I'm over here wondering How AI is going to affect our dependence on the Lord. Like what is what does the next generation look like growing up in a world where almost everything is at their fingertips?

What what were people are asking Chat GPT before they pick up the phone to call mom or dad? I realized that the other day. I realized I would I would always call my dad.

To ask him, hey, how do you fix this thing? And now I'm just taking a picture and saying, Chad, how do you fix this thing? That's the world that we're living in.

This world where people are becoming more and more okay with something artificial, something fake, if it looks real enough and it gets the job done. I hate to sound like an old man, but I'm a little concerned about what this might do to our spiritual lives. Ironically, technology was meant to make our lives more efficient, more productive.

It has also made us more lazy. Ironically, social media was meant to connect us more. It's made us more disconnected.

And I'm not anti-AI, I'm not anti-technology. These are These are tools that I think can be used for good. My fear is that these tools would unintentionally become like God's. And and and and the first thing that we're running to is Chat GBT.

The first thing we're running to is technology, and God gets treated as a last resort. That's my fear that we are losing our dependence on the Lord because it's so easy and so tempting to depend on everything else. I bet you ChatGBT could write a sermon.

A good one. If I were to prompt it and say, hey, write me a sermon on the gospel. And put some illustrations in there and put some emotion in there and put some stories in there and preach it from a Pentecostal perspective and make it fire.

And I just copied and pasted it. I bet you it would be a good theologically sound sermon. What kind of preacher would I be?

If I who had have been entrusted with the word of God, I who have been anointed to preach to the Lord's people. Have bypassed my assignment to give it to something that is not even real. What kind of preacher would I be?

What kind of children would we be to say to the Father who says, Seek me and you will find me? Ask of me and I will give it to you. Knock on my door and I will open it for you.

What kind of children would we be if we said, okay, God, I'm gonna do all those things because I'm a Christian, but first let me ask chat. First, let me try these meds. First, let me try these peptides.

First let me see if AI can help me. First, let me try it my way, God. And then we ask God, why do we see miracles anymore?

We have the audacity to ask that question. Maybe it's because our faith has become so diluted by everything else that we choose to depend on. And the faith that we do have is not faith in the power of God, it's faith in the power of what we can do and what we can create.

And then we ask, well when are we gonna see revival and when are we gonna see the the glory of God descend upon the nations? But but we've lost the art of seeking the Lord. Look, I don't I don't intend to preach this as if we're like fully there yet.

I I don't I don't think we're fully there yet. I I do believe that many of us are dependent on God. I believe that PNEUMA Church is a is a church that truly values the presence of God.

See oh no. We seek God, we worship God, we pursue God. I believe that, but what I'm saying is that we need to be careful not to stop seeking God in this world that would like to make us believe that we don't need Him. Continue to pursue him.

Continue to seek him. We live in a very different world than the first century church, than the apostles. Very different world than Moses and the prophets.

These men probably had all the time in the world to seek God. We don't have that kind of time anymore. We're too busy.

We got we got work, we got family. We got church. We got ministry.

There's always something to do. There's always somewhere to be. Pastor Moses had all the time in the world.

He didn't have iPhones, iPads. He didn't have emails that he had to write. The man could go up the mountain and spend days on end seeking the Lord.

I don't got that kind of time anymore. I I like the world we live in by the way. I'm not complaining.

When people ask, you know, that question if if you could live in any decade, which one would you live in? I'm good here. I like this one.

You know, we we have hot showers of something that was a luxury just a few few years ago. Not a few years ago, but you know, a little not not too long ago. But even hot showers, can I just preach a little bit?

I I felt I sound like an old man, right? But even hot showers have spoiled us I'll tell you why. A few years ago we were about to do baptisms here.

We're gonna do baptism. It was in January. The water heater wasn't working, so so the water was freezing.

And somebody asked me, are we gonna cancel baptisms? Because the what? Meanwhile, you got people in other parts of the world.

That are trying to get baptized in secret. And they're breaking ice, trying to make a place for them to get to get baptized. And we're complaining that the water's too cold.

And maybe I'll get baptized next time. I like AC. But let's be honest, if you knew that the AC wasn't working today, how many of you would have shown up?

I'll just do church from home today. I'll worship online, all cup cozy and comfy. And your little socks, in your little blanket.

We've become so spoiled. We've curated church to us, to our needs. We've created a God in our image.

And we're losing the art of seeking the one who called us, seeking the one who created us, seeking our maker. We gotta we gotta we gotta be old school with some things, man. We gotta learn how to get down on our knees.

Ah you quit suit like that, even when it hurts. We we gotta we gotta get some ashy knees again, man. I'm white, I don't get ashy, but But we gotta get on our knees again, man.

We gotta learn how to ask again in prayer, man. We gotta learn how to seek God in spirit and in truth. We gotta keep it old school and learn how to wait on the Lord.

We get so antsy, we get so impatient In this world where Amazon can literally deliver via drone in under an hour. I got a drone delivery to my house in under an hour this week. It was amazing.

That's the world we live in. But because we live in this world where everything is right now and there's so much abundance, I wonder if we are conditioning ourselves out of seeking. Seeking is becoming archaic in the information age where everything is right now.

I don't have to look that hard for the answers I don't even have to Google things anymore. I don't have to go through through one or two websites trying to find the answer. All I have to do is ask an AI, and the answer is right there.

And and so we're losing the art and the discipline of waiting on the Lord. We're losing the discipline of seeking God in his presence. We're we're losing the art of just of just sitting in silence because of this world that we live in I mean, bro, how hard is it to read our Bibles?

Not a lot of amens on that one. Like beyond the verse. Now, Pastor, I have memory verse every day.

I'm talking about like deep dive Bible study scripture. Where you sit down, you have a big old pot of coffee, you grab a highlighter, you get some commentaries, you get some resources, and you dissect the word of God, just you and the Holy Spirit. I love community.

I love Bible study together, but sometimes we even have to take the community out of it and just sit with the Holy Spirit alone and read our scripture. How hard is that? How when was the last time you have sat with the word of God and let it come to life in your soul?

How hard is it to spend an hour in prayer? We're so busy. Everything's gotten so efficient.

We don't even have the attention span to sit for that long. Man, you got you got churches, and I feel like I'm complaining about everything this morning, but you got some churches, man, that do Sunday morning worship in under an hour because if they go any longer, their people start to leave. I had a pastor tell me, I was like, man, you do three services an hour each?

This is like that's like drive-thru worship. And he and he and he he said he said people start to leave. They leave.

It gets too long. How hard has it become for us just to worship God in His presence without music? Man, I I get so tempted sometimes to tell the worship team, hey, we're gonna y'all gonna sit down this Sunday and we're gonna do worship with no music.

Yeah. This is like three claps. That'd be hard.

That'd be hard. But but but that would test that that would test the waters of of Pentecost. That would test the fire.

If we could worship as hard without a beat. Constantly need a stimulant to pursue God. And that's not the way.

That's not the way that one seeks God. It used to be that sheer passion was enough To pursue God. It used to be that faith was all one needed to go after Jesus, to just touch the hem of his garment, because I knew if I if I just pursued him enough, I would get my healing.

It used to be that fear of the Lord, that the love of the gospel, that the love of lost sheep was enough. For the cause of Christ. But now it's getting harder.

Getting harder because we're becoming less dependent and more distracted. Can I tell you that today, today, it's all about feeling. It's all about feeling.

If you ever find yourself unable to worship because you don't feel God. Lovingly, I tell you that the position of your heart is not in proper alignment. I say this lovingly because I know many of us struggle to worship God when we don't feel His presence.

I'll tell you why this is dangerous. In the wilderness, when Moses had gone up to the mountain to speak to God, the people of Israel, the people that he left down there, lost the only thing that connected them to God. Moses was the one who provided divine guidance.

Moses provided inspiration. And with all of those things, all the emotion that comes with it. It's emotional to watch God use someone.

And the anointing. It's emotional when you see God do a miracle through a man's faith. It's it's emotional.

And so when Moses leads to the mountain to speak to God, the the the Israelites lose that connection that they had to God. What do they do? Carve for us an image that we can see, that we can touch, that we can feel.

We want to feel something. And so too often we are trading presence for feeling. We're trading true worship for emotion.

And as a result, we have lost the art of seeking God. Because we're we're replacing it with things that man that make us uh instantly feel seen and instantly feel heard. Why wait on the Holy Spirit's guidance when I could just ask Chat GBT?

And some of you are saying, look, Pastor, that ain't me. I don't even like AI. You're preaching to the wrong person.

Don't miss my point My point is that the world that we are living in is making it easier for the next generation to stop asking God, stop seeking God, and stop waiting on God. And so if we want a chance at ensuring that generations who come after us, believers who come after us remain spirit-filled and spirit-led, we have to continue to fan the flames of revival. We have to show them.

We have to show them what a real relationship with Jesus looks like. We have to show them that there's power in prayer. We have to show them how we worship through trials.

We have to show them. How to have faith when when there's nothing left, we have to show them how to pursue God. Not just saying these things, demonstrating these things.

When I got to this this part of my sermon, immediately, conviction. Because I'm really good at at telling my kids. What is right?

I'm really good at telling them this is the way. This is what Jesus says. This is what the Spirit of God says.

This is why the Bible says this. I'm really good at telling them, but demonstration is so much more powerful than a lecture. Fan the flames of revival so that every generation continues to catch it And by the way, I'm not worried that we're gonna lose Christians by intellect.

I believe that we have a lot of intellectual Christians, and the evidence for God and Jesus is incredibly strong. I'm worried that we're gonna lose the Spirit of God. Because we don't just we don't seek him the way that we used to.

Because we're not as dependent on him as we used to. Still with me? So Jesus says, He invites us to do three things to keep us connected to the Father.

Ask, seek, and knock. Can I first say , we'll kind of dissect that. God doesn't just want to be your God, He wants to be your father.

And and again, my worry is that we're we're gravitating to a world where God is just God, but he's not Father. A father is someone you depend on. Father is someone you you love.

Father is someone you have a relationship with. God is someone you fear, someone you revere, someone you honor. And so my fear is we're going to have a lot of Christians who honor God, but they have no proximity to God.

They respect God. They walk in a church, they respect God. But they can't get into his presence because they don't seek him like a father.

And so Jesus asks us to do three things to keep us connected to the Father. Number one, ask. He says, ask and it will be given to you.

The the imagery that Jesus is drawing here is that of a father and a child. The child asks his father for something, the father gives it. And and the idea is why would a loving father not give his child what he needs?

Why would he give him a stone when he asks for bread? Why would he give him a serpent when he asks for uh for a fish? Now I want you to notice something here.

I think that we often we often miss the context here. Bread and fish are what? Food.

Stones and serpents are not food. It's just cruelty. So the promise is the Father is going to provide for his children That's the promise.

When we are dependent on our Heavenly Father and we're holding out our hands to Him, saying, God, I'm I'm I'm ready to receive your provision. He's not going to let his children starve. He's not gonna he knows what you need.

Now now some of you might may maybe you're asking for steak in Alaskan crab. And you're upset when God doesn't give you steak and a lasting crab, but you got bread. You got food on the table.

Your bellies are full. You're good. The God who loves you is the same God who knows what you need.

So ask and you shall receive. That's that's my this is my challenge. Don't lose your dependence on God as Father.

Don't lose it. Some of you today in this room are broke as a joke. It's easy to depend on him when you're broke.

It's easy. I believe and I declare in Jesus' name. You ain't gonna be broke forever.

You're gonna learn some things, you're gonna make some mistakes, you're gonna buy some stuff that you shouldn't have bought and regret it, put on credit cards. You're gonna go through all that. I went through it.

And you're gonna grow up. And you're not gonna be as broke as you once were. You might be a little bit broke, but not as your words were.

And so my challenge to you is to be as dependent on God in the blessings as you were in the struggle. Don't lose the dependence when you suddenly have more. Continue to ask.

Continue to go to him as a father Don't stop depending on the Lord. Every single day as a practice, wake up, give God thanks for everything that you have and everything that you don't need. Can I tell you, I have so much that I don't need that the Lord has allowed me to have?

Thank you, God. Thank you. And then ask him for what you do need and know.

That when you need bread, he's gonna give you bread. He says, seek and you shall find. Seek and you shall find.

You know, when the when the nation of Judah The southern kingdom of Israel, when that nation had fallen to the Babylonians, God sent word through the prophet Jeremiah. He told them to build houses. They were living in captivity.

He said, Build houses there. Plant gardens, take wives, seek the welfare of the city. He says, root yourselves in this city.

And then he gives them a promise that many of us kind of take out of context, but he says, For I know the plans that I have for you, declares the Lord. Plans for welfare, not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon me and come and pray, and I will hear you.

You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. I will be found by you, declares the Lord, and I will restore your fortunes and gather you from all the nations and all the places where I've driven you. Both the Hebrew and the Greek words for seek mean to seek.

Who would have thought? They mean to search for someone with the intent on finding them. And so I've never really thought about this before, but it's an interesting concept.

To seek God, listen, to seek God is not merely to call upon him. There's a difference. Seeking God is much more involved.

If my daughters call me from upstairs, they say, Dad , I'm instantly gonna say, What? if I'm annoyed. But but but they're not gonna have to s they're not to have they're not gonna have to search for me very long 'cause I'm right there.

And and we don't under we we don't always know why, but God isn't always super available. Is that is that true or no? He he kind of steps back sometimes, kind of hides sometimes, kind of feels that way.

He's not super available. And In this world where we value customer service, we expect God to be available. He's not at the front desk in the next two minutes.

I'm gonna leave a one-star Yelp review. We want to ring the the the front desk bell and expect God to come out and say, yes, how can I help you? That's that's what we expect because that's the world that we live in.

We expect God now we're not used to having to search anymore. Is this is this is this getting to you We're losing the art of seeking because of this culture that is conditioning us to not have to seek anymore. We don't have to do that work anymore Someone else can do it.

AI can do it. Technology can do it. And so it's making it harder for us, the children of God.

To seek the Father who wants to be sought. God wants to be pursued by you. He wants to be sought after by you.

Because this relationship with him was never meant to be transactional. Yes, ask, but also seek. Wives, you want your husbands pursuing you.

Every day you want them pursuing you. I hear I hear it all the time. I hear it all the time.

These uh I I won't I don't want to say names. Um Maybe I shouldn't say this. But I hear I hear single women say I want to be pursued I want to be pursued.

God wants to be pursued by you. Why do we stop? We say, yes, Jesus, I accept you into my heart, and then we then we stop seeking him We stop praying the way that we need to pray.

We stop studying and searching the scriptures. We seek everything that He can give us, but not His presence, not His face. So sometimes what God has to do to get our attention is pull the comfy rug from underneath us and put us in a season that makes us be like, hey God, where you at?

Where's that rug? You put the rug here. Why is it not here anymore?

God, why do you hate me? God, why are you leaving me? God, why did you abandon me?

It's just because He wants you to seek Him again. So I don't I don't want to have to seek God just when I have nothing. I want to seek Him even in abundance.

I'm gonna pursue him when I have more than enough because I'm grateful and because I love him There's gonna be times where you don't feel God's presence. You're gonna have no idea where God is. You thought he was in the new job that you got, but then You lasted a week and you got fired.

You thought he was in that relationship. You thought he was the one. And then within a month you broke your heart.

You thought he was in the ministry that you said yes to, but but you've been in it for a year and you've not seen any fruit. And it's like, God, where are you in my life? I don't feel you.

Let me tell you, church, sometimes all you will have to feel you is not a feeling. Can I tell you this morning? Because we always want a feeling to feel us.

God, make me cry. God put the right worship song on and the right worship song comes on a oh that was all you God Particularly my little emotions here. We want to feel something.

And sometimes you're not gonna have a feeling to fuel you. All you're gonna have is the word and a promise and your faith and your love of God if you have none of those things. What do you do if you don't have genuine love?

There's gonna be times, married couples, where you don't feel like being married. There's gonna be times where it's hard to love your spouse. But what do you do?

You choose to love her, anyways. You choose to love him, anyways. He annoyed you, he made you mad last night.

You choose to love him, anyways. That's what love is. Love bears all things, believes all things, pursues all things, and never ends.

That's what love is. If it was only a feeling, it wouldn't be love. We don't need wishy-washy Christians all in our feelings.

We need men and women of God who just love Him and love is enough and faith is enough and the word is enough to pursue Him. Remember, there was a time where you were dead in the trespasses of your sins, man. incapable of pursuing God and God pursued you.

There was a time where you couldn't even call out to God and God pursued you We owe it to him. We owe it to the Father to seek him when he pulls away. The last one is knock.

It says knock and the door will be opened to you. Don't lose your ability to wait on the Lord, church. That that's what knocking signifies.

It's waiting on the Lord, it's being persistent enough not to give up after three knocks. Again, we're we're fighting. Against a culture that has conditioned us to expect things now.

And if it's not gonna get here in two business days, I'm gonna cancel the order and find an alternative that'll get here quicker. God isn't always going to answer the Door right away. But what's the promise?

Isaiah 40. But they who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength. They shall mount up with wings like eagles.
