  1. So anyway, we're at lunch today.

  2. No, I'm just kidding.

  3. Let's start over.

  4. All right.

  5. So the title of my sermon this evening is The Devices of the Haters.

  6. The Devices of the Haters.

  7. When you read the book of Nehemiah, of course, Nehemiah is doing a great work for God and

  8. he's just having all kinds of success, but there are a lot of adversaries in the book

  9. of Nehemiah.

  10. A lot of haters, a lot of people that just really don't want Nehemiah to succeed.

  11. And unfortunately, in the Christian life, you're going to have people that are just out

  12. there to try to stop you and they don't want you to succeed.

  13. They don't want you to thrive as a Christian.

  14. They don't want you to grow in grace and the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

  15. They don't like to see you getting right with God and going out and getting people

  16. saved.

  17. You know, things that you'd assume everybody would be happy about.

  18. Unfortunately, there are some wicked people in this world, the sand ballads, Tobias

  19. and Gishams of this world.

  20. And in this chapter, you can see that they kind of come at Nehemiah with a whole bunch

  21. of different strategies just to try to mess with them.

  22. We're going to go through all of their various machinations and devices tonight.

  23. But starting on verse number one there of Nehemiah chapter six, it says, Now came

  24. to pass when Saint Ballot and Tobiah and Gisham the Arabian and the rest of our

  25. enemies heard that I had builded the wall and that there was no breach left therein,

  26. though at that time I'd not set up the doors upon the gates that Saint Ballot and

  27. Gisham sent unto me saying, Come, let us meet together in some one of the villages

  28. in the plain of Ono, but they thought to do me mischief.

  29. So notice, they act like they just want to get together with them and let's,

  30. Hey, let's talk about this.

  31. Maybe we can resolve this.

  32. But the Bible says they thought to do him mischief.

  33. And the first thing I want to point out is that number one,

  34. a lot of times haters will pretend that they want dialogue, but really they're just

  35. trying to hurt you.

  36. They're just trying to find a way to get at you.

  37. And in this case, when it says they sought to do a mischief,

  38. I think it means that they literally wanted to hurt him like to assault him or to kill him.

  39. But a lot of times, you know, people will just come at you and what they want to do

  40. is just catch you saying the wrong thing or kind of trap you, trick you.

  41. Hey, let's have a conversation.

  42. But really they're not actually interested in learning.

  43. Now, if you would flip over in your Bible to the Gospel of Mark in the New Testament,

  44. the Gospel of Mark, because people were constantly doing this to Jesus

  45. where they would pretend to have a sincere conversation with them.

  46. But really all they're trying to do is just to catch him saying something

  47. that they can use to attack him.

  48. So the haters will sometimes act like they just kind of want to hear you out

  49. or see where you're coming from, have some dialogue with you.

  50. But in reality, they're just trying to mess with you.

  51. So the Bible says in Mark chapter 12 verse 12,

    Mark 12:12

  52. and they sought to lay hold on him, but feared the people.

  53. So, you know, what they really want to do is just physically attack Jesus,

  54. get him arrested.

  55. But it says they knew that he had spoken the parable against them

  56. and they left him and went their way.

  57. And they sent unto him certain of the Pharisees and of the Herodians,

  58. watch this, to catch him in his words.

  59. And when they were come, they sand him.

  60. Master, we know that thou art true and cherished for no man,

  61. for thou regardest not the person of men,

  62. but teachest the way of God in truth.

  63. And of course here they're flattering him.

  64. They don't actually believe in Jesus.

  65. They don't like his teaching,

  66. but they're pretending to be friendly toward him in order to trick him.

  67. And then they say, is it lawful to give tribute to Caesar or not?

  68. And what they're doing is they're asking him a question

  69. where no matter what he says,

  70. they're going to be able to use this against him.

  71. If he says, yes, give the money to Caesar,

  72. then basically they can say, oh, he's a pro-government,

  73. FEMA pastor.

  74. He loves the Roman Empire.

  75. He's not really patriotic for Israel and stuff like that.

  76. And then if he says, don't pay tribute to Caesar,

  77. then what are they going to do?

  78. They're going to lie and say, oh, he's anti-government.

  79. He's rebellious.

  80. He's trying to overthrow the Romans.

  81. And ultimately, when Jesus Christ is arrested and beaten

  82. and crucified, this is one of the accusations

  83. that they come at him with.

  84. They say, hey, this guy's forbidding us to pay tribute to Caesar.

  85. He's telling us do not pay Caesar,

  86. which is of course the opposite of what he actually says.

  87. Because it says in verse 15, they ask him,

  88. shall we give or shall we not give?

  89. But he knowing their hypocrisy,

  90. so he knew that they're flattering him

  91. and that they're hypocrites.

  92. Knowing their hypocrisy,

  93. he said unto them, why tempt ye me?

  94. Bring me a penny that I may see it.

  95. And they brought it.

  96. And he said unto them, whose is this image in superscription?

  97. And they said unto him, Caesar's.

  98. And Jesus answering, said unto them,

  99. render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's

  100. and to God the things that are God.

  101. And they marveled at him.

  102. So his answer is, yeah, pay the taxes to Caesar.

  103. That doesn't change the fact that they're later

  104. going to lie and say that he said the opposite.

  105. But his answer is in such a way

  106. where he doesn't really give them the sound bite

  107. that they wanted where they could use it to attack him.

  108. And if you would flip over to Luke chapter 11,

    Luke 11 chapter mention

  109. just a few pages to the right in your Bible

  110. and we'll see something similar in Luke chapter 11.

    Luke 11 chapter mention

  111. And so a lot of times the haters are going to be too faced.

  112. They're going to pretend to be your friend.

  113. They're going to flatter you.

  114. They're going to act like they want to see

  115. where you're coming from.

  116. They want to dialogue with you.

  117. They want to talk with you.

  118. They're open to what you have to say, but they're not.

  119. Here's what the Bible says in Proverbs,

  120. go from the presence of a foolish man

  121. when thou perceivest not in him the lips of knowledge.

  122. So, you know, when someone has shown themselves

  123. to be malicious, a hater, a bad person,

  124. you know, you need to not be fooled by their flattery

  125. and their soft words when they come at you

  126. and try to, you know, act like they're your friend or something.

  127. And, you know, the Bible also says,

  128. a man that is a heretic

  129. after the first and second admonition reject.

  130. Because you don't want to just spend so much time

  131. with people who just want to argue with you

  132. and waste your time.

  133. And they're really just trying to catch you in your words

  134. so that they can use it against you.

  135. Look at Luke 11, verse 53.

    Luke 11:53

  136. And as he said, these things unto them,

  137. the scribes and the Pharisees began to urge him vehemently

  138. and to provoke him to speak of many things.

  139. So, they're kind of just trying to get him to talk about

  140. as many different subjects

  141. and they're trying to really interrogate him

  142. and pin him down.

  143. And then it says in verse 54 what they're doing,

  144. laying weight for him

  145. and seeking to catch something out of his mouth

  146. that they might accuse him.

  147. So, they're trying to accuse Jesus.

  148. They're not actually trying to learn, right?

  149. And here's the thing.

  150. Some people come at you and ask you questions

  151. and they make it seem like they're trying to learn,

  152. but really what they're trying to do

  153. is just use it against you.

  154. Anything you say can and will be used against you.

  155. So, back to Nehemiah,

  156. let's look at Nehemiah's reaction to this.

  157. Okay, so the first thing we see

  158. is that they're pretending

  159. that they want to dialogue with him,

  160. but really they just want to hurt him.

  161. Look at verse number three,

  162. Nehemiah says,

  163. And I sent messengers unto them.

  164. So, you know, he doesn't even go

  165. and tell them this himself.

  166. He just sends it through a messenger.

  167. I'm doing a great work

  168. so that I cannot come down.

  169. Why should the work cease

  170. whilst I leave it and come down to you?

  171. Yet they sent unto me four times after this sort

  172. and I answered them after the same manner.

  173. So, notice Nehemiah is not taking the bait.

  174. He's not just going to get sucked in

  175. to talk into a bunch of professional time wasters

  176. and arguing with people

  177. and going back and forth with people

  178. and just wasting time with people.

  179. He's not going to waste a bunch of time with bozos.

  180. He's just like,

  181. Look, I'm doing a great work.

  182. I'm not going to come down

  183. and sit around and talk to you.

  184. And we got to make sure

  185. that when the enemies and the haters

  186. want to argue with us and talk to us,

  187. you know, that we don't get sucked in

  188. because there's a lot of great work

  189. that we could be doing for God

  190. and it's easy to just get distracted

  191. and fixated on things that don't matter

  192. and that aren't important.

  193. You know, let the dead bury their dead

  194. and just go preach the kingdom of God.

  195. And so that's point number one.

  196. Number two,

  197. look at verse number five.

  198. It says then sent sand ballot.

  199. So, you know, the first tactic didn't work.

  200. So now look what they're going to try in verse five.

  201. Then sent sand ballot

  202. his servant unto me in like manner.

  203. The fifth time with an open letter in his hand.

  204. And when we see the word open letter,

  205. what we're saying is this is not a private communication.

  206. An open letter is one that's public

  207. for anyone and everyone to read.

  208. So to give like a modern analogy of this,

  209. this would be like sending,

  210. instead of sending a DM or a private message,

  211. this is just like posting to their wall or something,

  212. you know, or posting it openly on social media.

  213. That's what an open letter is.

  214. And this is what the letter says.

  215. It's reported among the heathen

  216. and gas bag set it.

  217. I mean, gash move set it.

  218. That thou and the Jews think to rebel

  219. for which cause thou buildest the wall

  220. that thou mayest be their king,

  221. according to these words.

  222. And thou has also appointed prophets

  223. to preach of the Jerusalem

  224. saying there's a king in Judah.

  225. And now shall it be reported to the king,

  226. according to these words,

  227. come now therefore and let us take counsel together.

  228. And so point number two is this.

  229. Haters will often pretend that they want to help you

  230. or that they're on your side

  231. when they correct you publicly,

  232. when they publicly correct,

  233. they send you an open letter like,

  234. Hey, we're just worried about you,

  235. you know, because these are the accusations.

  236. This is what people are saying about you.

  237. And we're just, we just want to get together

  238. and just kind of counsel with you

  239. and see if we can help you out.

  240. But really what their goal is,

  241. is to just publicly repeat the accusations.

  242. That's why they're doing it as an open letter.

  243. They're not doing it privately.

  244. Okay. So this is like when, you know,

  245. a so-called preacher friend of mine

  246. preached against me

  247. and then two days after preaching against me

  248. calls me up and says,

  249. Hey, he wants to talk to me,

  250. ask me some questions,

  251. see, you know, get things from my side of the story.

  252. It's like, wait a minute,

  253. you know, you've already attacked me publicly.

  254. People who attack you publicly

  255. about false accusations and rumors

  256. without even hearing your side

  257. are not your friends.

  258. Now this is the scripture

  259. that people will often hide behind.

  260. And we're going to be in Nehemiah 6 the whole time,

  261. but flip over to Proverbs chapter 27.

    Proverbs 27 chapter mention

  262. Because I think this is one of the most

  263. misunderstood scriptures

  264. that gets misapplied a lot

  265. by people who want to pretend to be your friend.

  266. And really they're just out to hurt you

  267. and just amplify attacks on you.

  268. And again, here's a rule of thumb

  269. that I've noticed when it comes to correcting people.

  270. I've noticed that when people

  271. who actually care about me

  272. want to correct me,

  273. usually they'll send you the DM.

  274. And then the people who actually

  275. don't care about you

  276. and their correction is insincere

  277. are usually leaving it as a public comment

  278. or a public post or something like that.

  279. Because typically, you know,

  280. and I use this illustration,

  281. this is kind of a crass illustration,

  282. but I'm going to use it again

  283. because it's such a great illustration.

  284. But I was at the airport one time

  285. and this guy that I didn't even know

  286. just walks up to me

  287. and just puts his arm around me

  288. like he's my buddy,

  289. which kind of, you know,

  290. it kind of takes you aback

  291. because you're not used to that.

  292. He comes up and hey, buddy,

  293. acts like he's my friend

  294. and he whispers in my ear,

  295. hey, your zipper's down.

  296. You know, and here's the thing.

  297. What he was doing was

  298. he was trying to be nonchalant

  299. and cool about it

  300. so they wouldn't embarrass me

  301. and humiliate me

  302. because I had made a mistake.

  303. See, that's what your actual friend

  304. is going to do

  305. who's actually trying to help you out.

  306. Look, obviously,

  307. you don't want to let somebody

  308. just walk around, you know,

  309. with their zipper down or something.

  310. It's embarrassing.

  311. It's humiliating, right?

  312. So you're going to come alongside

  313. that person and tell them

  314. but it's not like,

  315. hey, you're afraid of heights, buddy?

  316. Because your zipper is.

  317. You know what I mean?

  318. Like that's the wrong way to correct someone

  319. because you don't want to embarrass someone.

  320. Does everybody understand what I'm saying?

  321. And so it's pretty easy sometimes

  322. to tell who your friends are

  323. because your friends,

  324. they're going to come up

  325. and be nonchalant about it

  326. and say, hey, let me privately tell you some advice.

  327. Let me help you, friend.

  328. Let me because look,

  329. all of us need correction at times.

  330. But when people are just at the drop of a hat

  331. to correct you publicly,

  332. especially about private things or something,

  333. what it is is that

  334. they really just want to embarrass you.

  335. They want to humiliate,

  336. they want to attack you publicly,

  337. but they want to make it seem like,

  338. oh, we just care about you.

  339. We're just concerned about you.

  340. I was just worried about your zipper being down.

  341. That's why I shouted it to the entire airport.

  342. I mean, maybe they could just get that intercom at the airport

  343. and just be like,

  344. passenger Stephen Anderson, gate 15.

  345. Your zipper is down.

  346. Gate 15, passenger Stephen Anderson,

  347. report to the desk.

  348. You know, that's the way some people are.

  349. They don't love you.

  350. They don't care about you, right?

  351. They're not trying to help you.

  352. So here's the verse though

  353. that they'll hide behind

  354. to justify this kind of behavior.

  355. Chapter 27 verse 5 in Proverbs says,

  356. open rebuke is better than secret love.

  357. This is their life verse.

  358. Hey, we're just going to just openly rebuke everybody every time.

  359. Okay?

  360. Open rebuke is better than secret love.

  361. Faithful are the wounds of a friend,

  362. but the kisses of an enemy are deceitful.

  363. And here's what this Bible verse is not saying.

  364. This Bible verse is not saying,

  365. always rebuke openly.

  366. Always correct everybody publicly.

  367. That's not what this is saying.

  368. It's simply saying that open rebuke

  369. is better than secret love.

  370. You know, here's the whole point here is like,

  371. well even open rebuke,

  372. even though that's not good,

  373. even though that's bad,

  374. you know, it's still better than secret love.

  375. You know, does everybody understand what I'm saying?

  376. It'd be like if I were comparing two things

  377. and I said, hey, McDonald's is better than what a burger.

  378. It doesn't mean that I'm okay.

  379. Sorry, but wrong crowd.

  380. If I said, if I said, hey,

  381. McDonald's better than what a burger,

  382. it wouldn't be like I'm saying like,

  383. yay, McDonald's is awesome.

  384. Does everybody understand?

  385. Okay, I got one person that's just being polite

  386. because he invited me here to preach.

  387. Bad illustration.

  388. But the point is you're bringing up

  389. two things that are not what you want.

  390. They're not ideal.

  391. They're not the best situation.

  392. And it's just basically saying that secret love

  393. is so low that basically open rebuke

  394. is even better, even open rebuke's better than that.

  395. It's not just saying,

  396. hey, we just always openly rebuke our friends

  397. and just humiliate and embarrass them every chance we get.

  398. Does everybody see what I'm saying?

  399. What a twisting of scripture though

  400. to act like open rebuke is just the way to go.

  401. That's just the way to be a friend.

  402. Well, that's not what the rest of the Bible teaches.

  403. That doesn't even make sense.

  404. And they're misunderstanding the comparison

  405. that's being made here.

  406. What it's saying here is that,

  407. hey, at least the person who openly rebukes you

  408. is being honest with you.

  409. At least they're being upfront and honest.

  410. It'd be like if I said, hey, the devil you know

  411. is better than the devil you don't know.

  412. Doesn't mean I'm like, yay, the devil I know, great.

  413. But the bottom line is that most corrections

  414. should be done privately.

  415. Okay.

  416. Now, if you would go to Galatians chapter two,

  417. Galatians chapter two,

  418. let me read for you just a few verses on this.

  419. And again, we could really park on any

  420. of these points and just,

  421. I could prove this from the Bible all day long,

  422. but I'm just going to give you a few verses on this.

  423. But it says in Matthew 18, 15,

  424. moreover, if thy brother shall trespass against thee,

  425. go and tell him his fault between thee and him alone,

  426. if he shall hear thee, thou hast gained thy brother.

  427. Or how about Proverbs 25, 9,

  428. debate thy cause with thy neighbor himself

  429. and discover not a secret to another.

  430. Saying, you know, you got a problem with someone,

  431. you got an issue with someone,

  432. you need to, you know, correct someone.

  433. Usually you're going to go to that person,

  434. if you care about that person and privately tell them.

  435. Now, sometimes open rebuke is appropriate.

  436. There are times when things need to be called out publicly

  437. and when a public correction needs to happen.

  438. And this is typically a situation

  439. where it's a public matter that needs to be dealt with.

  440. Like if the crime is public,

  441. then typically the correction is going to need to be public,

  442. especially if it's something that affects other people.

  443. So for example, if somebody is getting up

  444. and preaching false doctrine that's really bad,

  445. like damnable heresy, just a really harmful bad teaching

  446. is being publicly taught,

  447. then yeah, you got to publicly call that out

  448. so that basically everybody can get straight on the doctrine.

  449. Okay, that's different than just,

  450. hey, I'm just always going to correct everybody

  451. for every private matter.

  452. I'm just going to put it on blast, open letter, public,

  453. social media on everything.

  454. Look, if you would, and look,

  455. that's what people do to their enemies.

  456. They put their enemies publicly on blasts,

  457. but is that how you treat your friends?

  458. Those are some interesting friendships in that case.

  459. But look at Galatians chapter 2, verse 11.

    Galatians 2:11

  460. We're going to see a public correction

  461. that's appropriate in the Bible.

  462. It says in verse 11,

  463. but when Peter was come to Antioch,

  464. I withstood him to his face because he was to be blamed

  465. for before that certain came from James,

  466. he did eat with the Gentiles,

  467. but when they were come,

  468. he withdrew and separated himself,

  469. fearing them which were of the circumcision.

  470. And the other Jews dissembled likewise with him

  471. in so much that Barnabas also was carried away

  472. with their dissimulation.

  473. And when I saw that they walked not uprightly

  474. according to the truth of the gospel,

  475. and I'm going to stop right there for a second,

  476. notice this is a doctrinal issue

  477. that is actually harming the cause

  478. of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  479. This could confuse people about what the gospel even is.

  480. They're not walking according to the gospel,

  481. and then other Jews are getting caught up in it.

  482. So this isn't just one person.

  483. I mean, this is somebody doing something,

  484. teaching something that is causing

  485. a whole bunch of other people to get caught up in it,

  486. even Barnabas is getting caught up in it.

  487. And it's something that's even ultimately

  488. leading to a salvation type issue

  489. where it's like, hey, this is not compatible

  490. with the gospel that we're preaching here.

  491. And so because of that, it says,

  492. I said unto Peter before them all.

  493. So he ends up publicly correcting this.

  494. I said unto Peter before them all,

  495. if thou being a Jew,

  496. livest after the manner of Gentiles,

  497. and not as do the Jews,

  498. why compelest thou the Gentiles

  499. to live as do the Jews?

  500. Now look, I do believe that Paul loved Peter.

  501. I do believe that Peter and Paul are friends.

  502. We see in 2 Peter chapter 3,

    2 Peter 3 chapter mention

  503. Peter is being very positive about the apostle Paul.

  504. Obviously Paul loves Peter.

  505. They're both good men of God.

  506. They're both friends.

  507. And so every once in a while,

  508. even friends, yes, sometimes

  509. are going to have to call one another out

  510. publicly over something.

  511. But you know what?

  512. It better be something important.

  513. It better be something meaningful.

  514. It better be something that actually matters.

  515. And again, this is something

  516. Peter is doing publicly, harming the gospel.

  517. And so Paul has to unfortunately set him straight on it.

  518. But this is not a teaching that just says,

  519. hey, this is how we treat our friends

  520. every time they make a mistake.

  521. We amplify it, open letter publicly.

  522. And again, I've just noticed,

  523. I've been at this thing for a long time.

  524. And I've noticed that the comments

  525. versus the private messages,

  526. depending on whether the people actually care about you

  527. when they're making a correction.

  528. And I'll do the same.

  529. I'll literally, I'll see something misspelled

  530. on one of my pastor friends posts.

  531. And I'm not talking about Brother Reyes,

  532. be an ESL or something.

  533. But I'll see one of my pastor friends

  534. will literally misspell something.

  535. I'm not leaving a comment like, hey, you spelled it wrong.

  536. I'm typically sending a private message,

  537. hey, you spelled it wrong in general.

  538. Even over little dumb things like that

  539. that don't even matter,

  540. I always try to lean toward a private message

  541. because the goal is actually to correct the person

  542. not to just call them out

  543. and try to hurt their reputation or something like that.

  544. So that's what the haters will do.

  545. Look at Nehemiah chapter six.

  546. Let's look at Nehemiah's reaction.

  547. So we said, number one, the haters,

  548. they pretend to be open.

  549. They pretend to be your friend.

  550. They pretend they want to dialogue.

  551. They pretend they want to learn.

  552. But a lot of times they're just hypocrites

  553. trying to nail you.

  554. Number two, we saw that the haters will

  555. try to pretend that they want to help you

  556. by correcting you publicly

  557. because open review is better than secret love

  558. when in reality what they're trying to do

  559. is just amplify whatever the accusations are.

  560. Because remember, these accusations against Nehemiah,

  561. they're lies and false accusations.

  562. And really what Gasbag and Tobiah and Geeshim and these guys,

  563. they're just trying to amplify it

  564. and just make sure more people hear about it.

  565. While pretending like, hey, why counsel you, brother,

  566. why I get together and help you.

  567. It's disingenuous.

  568. Look at Nehemiah's reaction verse eight.

  569. Then I sent unto them saying,

  570. there are no such things done as thou sayest,

  571. but thou feignest them out of thine own heart.

  572. What's Nehemiah saying?

  573. You just made that up right now.

  574. That's not real.

  575. That's not a real accusation.

  576. You're making that up.

  577. And so his response is to call out

  578. the false accusations as the baloney that they are.

  579. Let's look at number nine, verse number nine for point three.

  580. It says, for they all made us afraid saying,

  581. their hands shall be weakened from the work

  582. that it be not done.

  583. Now therefore, oh God, strengthen my hands.

  584. So point number three is this.

  585. Haters will try to claim that you're going to fail.

  586. They're going to try to claim that your work is going to fail.

  587. And that's what they're saying about Nehemiah.

  588. They're saying, oh, his hands are going to be weakened from the work.

  589. He's not going to be able to get it done.

  590. Earlier in the book of Nehemiah, they said,

  591. oh, if a fox runs up on the wall that he builds,

  592. it's just going to fall over.

  593. So they want to downplay his success.

  594. And they want to just predict his failure.

  595. You know, and unfortunately,

  596. there are going to be haters like this in our lives

  597. that are just rooting for us to fail.

  598. You know, they just want us all to fail.

  599. They want your pastor to fail.

  600. They want me to fail.

  601. They want you to fail.

  602. They just want to see us fail.

  603. And it kind of, when I was reading this,

  604. it kind of made me think about the constant predictions

  605. of the quote, unquote, fall of the new IFB, right?

  606. Like the rise and fall of the new IFB,

  607. even though the NIV is thriving and we're in our prime.

  608. You know, that's just the reality of the situation.

  609. Obviously, our churches are thriving.

  610. There's no sign of slowing down whatsoever.

  611. I mean, I'm looking at your bulletin

  612. and you look at last year's salvations.

  613. And it's like, you guys have already like tripled that this year.

  614. And it's September, you know?

  615. So, you know, there's no dying or falling or oh,

  616. we're just in our final last few spasmatic death throes

  617. before we just give up the ghost over here.

  618. It's like, our churches are growing and thriving.

  619. And honestly, the numbers don't lie.

  620. It's that simple.

  621. I mean, just think about how Pastor Shelly up in Dallas,

  622. Fort Worth, what they have like 287 people

  623. on Sunday morning church.

  624. He's constantly texting me.

  625. Attendances that just blow me away

  626. of how that church is growing and thriving.

  627. And you know, this church is getting tons of people saved

  628. here in Houston, doing great.

  629. Our church in Phoenix is thriving growing.

  630. We've had over 5,000 salvations this year.

  631. And again, it's only September.

  632. We still got three more months to go.

  633. And so, you know, it's exciting.

  634. And so, you know, people try to say like,

  635. oh, they're going to fail.

  636. They're going to crash and burn.

  637. This is just a last ditch effort or whatever.

  638. Well, yeah, but it's like month after month, year after year

  639. of last ditch effort, final gas, final struggle,

  640. that last little bit of energy before you die or something.

  641. You know, if that's what this is,

  642. it's kind of lasting a long time, you know?

  643. Because if you think about it,

  644. sometimes that does happen when people die.

  645. It's like people are freezing to death.

  646. They get warm again, right?

  647. Before they die or something, you know?

  648. People drown and then they go unconscious

  649. and then they take one last gas per breath.

  650. Their body tries one more time to,

  651. yeah, that's what we do just for years on end.

  652. We're just always dying all the time.

  653. Just constant.

  654. It just never stops.

  655. Just constantly falling.

  656. We're going to, I guess we just keep falling

  657. and falling and we're just in a free fall.

  658. We must be in orbit or something.

  659. The way that we're just in free fall for years at a time.

  660. So I guess we're just going 18,000 miles an hour,

  661. just free falling around the planet.

  662. I guess that's what's going on.

  663. So number three is they're going to try to,

  664. you know, have this doom and gloom.

  665. You know, you're going to crash and burn.

  666. You're going to fail.

  667. You're not going to make it.

  668. But obviously they're wrong.

  669. Look at verse 10.

  670. Afterward, I came under the house of Shamiah,

  671. the son of Deliah, the son of Mahetabeel,

  672. who was shut up and he said,

  673. let us meet together in the house of God within the temple

  674. and let us shut the doors of the temple

  675. for they will come to slay thee.

  676. Ye in the night will they come to slay thee.

  677. So number four is that the haters,

  678. they want you to be intimidated and scared

  679. so that you'll just flee when no man's pursuing.

  680. They just want you scared of your own shadow.

  681. And they're trying to scare Nehemiah.

  682. Look at Nehemiah's response in verse 11.

  683. And I said, should such a man as I flee,

  684. and who is there that being as I am

  685. would go into the temple to save his life,

  686. I will not go in.

  687. And so notice Nehemiah is going to continue

  688. serving God publicly

  689. and he's not going to let fear stop him.

  690. He said, man, you know what?

  691. I'd rather die than go hide and cower in fear.

  692. He's like, should such a man as I hide,

  693. you think I'm going to go lock myself in the temple,

  694. shut the door, be scared, fleeing from my...

  695. He said, you know what?

  696. I'd rather just die than to just flee and cower in fear

  697. when there's a great work to be done.

  698. Hey, God wants us to keep serving him

  699. and he wants us to serve him publicly.

  700. We should be public about our service for God

  701. and not trying to hide it

  702. and trying to put it under a bushel.

  703. Notice that Nehemiah,

  704. he's not setting the sermons to private

  705. and putting it behind a password.

  706. No, we should be shouting it from the house tops, amen?

  707. And you know what?

  708. If you're a young person, you go to school,

  709. you go to work, go to different places,

  710. you know what?

  711. You should make it known that you're a Christian

  712. everywhere that you go.

  713. You know, go to school,

  714. bring your Bible with you to school.

  715. You know, talk to the people at work,

  716. talk to the people at school,

  717. talk to the people in your neighborhood,

  718. let them know that you're a Christian.

  719. Let them know that you're saved.

  720. Let them know that you believe in the Word of God

  721. and you can have opportunities

  722. to win those people to Christ.

  723. Don't be some kind of undercover, secret Christian.

  724. Be open about your service for God.

  725. Let me give you some examples of this.

  726. Daniel, chapter 6,

    Daniel 6 chapter mention

  727. you don't have to turn there,

  728. but of course they've made it illegal

  729. for Daniel to pray

  730. and he's in the habit of praying

  731. and they made it illegal

  732. and he was going to be killed

  733. if he prays to the Lord

  734. during this one month period

  735. and it says in verse 10 of Daniel 6,

  736. now when Daniel knew that the writing was signed,

  737. he went into his house

  738. and his windows being open

  739. in his chamber toward Jerusalem,

  740. he kneeled upon his knees three times a day

  741. and prayed and gave thanks before his God

  742. as he did a four time.

  743. He opens the window

  744. and he prays with the windows open

  745. just like he always does

  746. and just the fact that they're trying

  747. to persecute him

  748. and make it illegal

  749. and get him in trouble.

  750. He just did not change the routine.

  751. He's going to continue to serve God

  752. and he's going to continue to do it publicly.

  753. That's what we see in Daniel 6

  754. and of course that gets him

  755. thrown into the lion's den

  756. but God delivers him from the lion's den.

  757. Many are the afflictions of the righteous

  758. but out of them all

  759. the Lord delivers him.

  760. That's what the Bible says.

  761. Look, all that will live Godly in Christ Jesus

  762. shall suffer persecution.

  763. It's not just pastors

  764. they get persecuted.

  765. It's everybody.

  766. It's every layman,

  767. man, woman, boy and girl

  768. there are going to be people

  769. that come at you in your life.

  770. They want to scare you.

  771. They want to intimidate you.

  772. They want to slow you down

  773. and the way to overcome that

  774. you know the Bible says

  775. resist the devil and he'll flee from you.

  776. You know you got to just keep

  777. serving God publicly

  778. and stay bold,

  779. have the courage to keep going.

  780. The Bible says the wicked flee

  781. when no man pursues

  782. but the righteous are as bold as a lion.

  783. You see having a clear conscience

  784. and knowing that you're following the Bible

  785. you know that what you're doing

  786. is consistent with God's word.

  787. You know you love the Lord.

  788. You know that people are being saved.

  789. You know that you're on the Lord's side

  790. and so you have that confidence

  791. that could just give you boldness

  792. to say nothing will stop me.

  793. Nothing will make me go dark

  794. to go quiet,

  795. to go underground.

  796. No, I'm just going to keep on going

  797. because if God's force

  798. who can be against us?

  799. And so he said,

  800. man, I'd rather die

  801. than go hide.

  802. You know you want me to go hide

  803. and shut the door and be scared.

  804. I'd rather die than do that.

  805. I'm going to keep serving God.

  806. What does the Bible say

  807. in Revelation 2.10?

  808. You don't have to turn there.

  809. But it says,

  810. fear none of those things

  811. which thou shalt suffer.

  812. Behold the devil shall cast

  813. some of you into prison

  814. that she may be tried

  815. and ye shall have tribulation

  816. ten days

  817. be thou faithful unto death

  818. and I will give thee a crown of life.

  819. You know and thankfully

  820. none of us have ever had to go to prison

  821. or be in the risk of being killed

  822. for the cause of Christ.

  823. You know as it says in Hebrews,

  824. you've not yet resisted

  825. unto blood

  826. striving against sin.

  827. You know God's kept us safe.

  828. God has protected us from those things.

  829. But the Bible is saying that

  830. even if you were to be thrown

  831. into prison,

  832. even if you were to be killed

  833. for the cause of Christ,

  834. God wants us to be faithful unto death

  835. and he says,

  836. I'll give you a crown of life.

  837. And so just as

  838. Christ was obedient unto death

  839. even the death of the cross,

  840. that's the commitment

  841. that God requires from us.

  842. And so if you can't even withstand

  843. a little bit of ridicule

  844. people saying all manner of evil

  845. against you falsely,

  846. persecuting you,

  847. criticizing you,

  848. maybe they're laughing at you

  849. on the playground

  850. or maybe they're you know

  851. snickering about you

  852. and poking each other

  853. at the water cooler at work

  854. or something

  855. because you're a fundamental Christian

  856. because you're

  857. live into a higher standard.

  858. You know whatever people

  859. say about you,

  860. criticize you,

  861. you know it's still better

  862. than taking a beating in an alley.

  863. You know you've not yet

  864. resisted unto blood

  865. striving against sin.

  866. You know none of us

  867. have been cast into prison

  868. so praise God for that.

  869. But he says,

  870. look some of you

  871. are going to be cast into prison

  872. and you'll have tribulation

  873. and when you hear tribulation

  874. for 10 days

  875. it sounds pretty doable.

  876. Like I feel like

  877. I could handle anything

  878. for 10 days, right?

  879. He says you'll have

  880. tribulation 10 days

  881. and obviously 10 days

  882. is a symbolic number

  883. here.

  884. But the symbolism of 10 days

  885. is a short period of time

  886. because nobody hears 10 days

  887. and thinks oh man

  888. that's super long.

  889. You know I mean hey

  890. if we're going to go to prison

  891. hopefully it's only for 10 days

  892. amen.

  893. And the idea is

  894. that in the scheme of things

  895. when we go to prison

  896. when we get persecuted

  897. when bad things happen

  898. that's on this earth

  899. you know our life

  900. is like a vapor

  901. that appears for a little time

  902. and then vanishes away

  903. so whatever it is

  904. that we endure

  905. for the 10 days

  906. of our tribulation

  907. the 10 days of our life

  908. here on this earth

  909. you know at the end of the day

  910. we can't even compare it

  911. with the glory

  912. that shall be revealed in us

  913. that the sufferings of this life

  914. are not worthy to be compared

  915. with the glory

  916. that shall be revealed in us

  917. the Bible says.

  918. So look at Nehemiah chapter 6 verse 12

    Nehemiah 6:12

  919. and we'll see Nehemiah's reaction

  920. besides you know saying

  921. hey I'd rather die

  922. than go hide

  923. and be scared

  924. and wimp out

  925. but he says in verse 12

  926. lo I perceive that God had not sent him

  927. you know the guy who's giving him this advice

  928. of like hey you just need to go dark brother

  929. you just need to just

  930. you know set it to private

  931. you just need to hide

  932. lo I perceive that God had not sent him

  933. but that he pronounced this prophecy against me

  934. for Tobiah and Sanballad had hired him

  935. therefore was he hired

  936. that I should be afraid

  937. and do so

  938. and sin

  939. and that they might have

  940. matter for an evil report

  941. that they might reproach me

  942. and of course this is always the devil's

  943. modus operandi

  944. is he'll tell you to do something

  945. and then when you do it

  946. he'll accuse you for doing it

  947. it's kind of interesting how the devil

  948. is both the tempter

  949. and the accuser

  950. how does that work

  951. it'd be like if

  952. a prosecutor

  953. was going around provoking people

  954. to commit crimes

  955. and then he's in court on Monday morning

  956. like this guy's terrible

  957. look what he did

  958. and then on Saturday and Sunday

  959. he's out like tempting people

  960. and entrapping people

  961. and trying to get them

  962. to commit crimes

  963. it'd be bizarre right

  964. but that's literally what the devil is

  965. he's the tempter

  966. and he's the accuser

  967. and it kind of reminds me

  968. of the story of Amnon

  969. in the Old Testament

  970. where his friend John Adab

  971. gives him the idea to commit this crime

  972. against his sister Tamar

  973. and then after he commits the crime

  974. John Adab was just kind of gleefully

  975. talking about it

  976. like oh yeah this is what you know

  977. this is what Amnon did

  978. because he's both the tempter

  979. and the accuser

  980. okay so these people

  981. they're trying to get Nehemiah

  982. to go flee and hide

  983. and cower in fear

  984. and then they're going to turn around

  985. and say oh look what a coward he is

  986. look how weak

  987. this guy doesn't have faith in God

  988. this guy's not trusting the Lord

  989. look how he's hiding

  990. even though they sent a fake preacher

  991. to tell him that it was the will of God

  992. for him to hide

  993. but he realized wait a minute

  994. this guy's not preaching the word of God

  995. this guy has been hired

  996. by my enemies

  997. look at verse number 14

  998. my god

  999. think thou upon Tobiah and Sandballad

  1000. according to the

1001. according to these their works

  1002. and on the prophetess

  1003. Noah Daya

1004. you know this is some female preacher

1005. that was giving him trouble

1006. and the rest of the prophets

1007. that would have put me in fear

1008. and so we said point number four

  1009. is that the haters

1010. you know they want to intimidate you

  1011. and scare you

1012. so that you'll basically shut up

1013. so that you'll kind of just hide

  1014. and cower in fear

  1015. and not be effective

  1016. serving God

1017. but now it's getting to point five

1018. because we're seeing all the devices

1019. of the haters in this chapter right

1020. we've seen all the different things

1021. they're going to try to pretend

  1022. that they're for you

  1023. they want to dialogue

  1024. they want to learn

  1025. they want to talk

1026. they want to counsel you

1027. they're here to help you

  1028. and you know

1029. they're they're going to try to scare you

1030. they're going to try to do all these

1031. different things to get at you

  1032. they'll they'll try to

  1033. just downplay your success

  1034. and act like oh

1035. you're on the verge of failure

  1036. you're about to fail

1037. you're about to crash and burn

  1038. you know we are

  1039. everybody already sees it

1040. in fact we're already just

1041. announcing the the rise and fall

  1042. of of you know

  1043. spring crest baptist church

1044. you know we're already releasing

1045. a book called the rise and fall

  1046. of spring crest baptist

1047. even though spring crest baptist

  1048. is still here

1049. like that doesn't even make sense

1050. but look if you would at

  1051. verse number 15

1052. it says so the wall

  1053. was finished

1054. look how God gave the victory

1055. in spite of all the haters

  1056. and all their machinations

1057. and all their huffing and puffing

  1058. they get it done

  1059. the wall was finished

1060. in the 20 and fifth day of the

  1061. month elul

1062. in 50 and two days

1063. and it came to pass

1064. that when all our enemies

  1065. heard thereof

1066. and all the heathen that were

1067. about us saw these things

  1068. watch this

1069. this is the best part

1070. they were much cast down in

  1071. their own eyes

1072. so when they hear that God's

  1073. work goes forward

  1074. this finish thriving successful

1075. they were much cast down

  1076. in their own eyes

1077. for they perceived that this

1078. work was wrought of our God

1079. and so point number five is this

  1080. the haters

  1081. they secretly know that

  1082. they're losers

1083. like in their own eyes

1084. they're cast down like oh man

  1085. we lost

  1086. you know

1087. the haters secretly know that

  1088. they're losers

1089. which is why they just can't

  1090. stop wasting their lives

  1091. attacking good churches

  1092. and good people

1093. it's sort of like the devil

1094. like what makes the devil tick

1095. what makes Satan keep doing

  1096. is I mean

1097. Satan is going to lose

1098. we know this from the word of

  1099. God

1100. we've read the final chapter

1101. we know how it is

1102. we know that the devil is doomed

  1103. what is the point

1104. of the devil continuing to

  1105. operate on this earth

1106. and have all his minions

  1107. going everywhere

1108. you know what the devil

  1109. wants to do

1110. is just take as many people to

1111. hell with him as he can

  1112. because misery loves company

1113. and so the devil's doomed

  1114. there's nothing the devil

1115. can do to fix his situation

1116. he is what he is

  1117. he is a loser

1118. he can't fix his situation

1119. and so what can he do

1120. is just try to drag down as

  1121. many people

1122. with him as he can

  1123. you know that's that's the goal

  1124. and so the haters

1125. they secretly know deep down

1126. they know that they are failures

1127. and that the Lord is with us

1128. they secretly know that they're

  1129. losers

1130. and so the only meaning that

1131. they can find in their life

1132. is to continue to fixate on us

  1133. obsess over us

1134. and just attack good Christians

  1135. attack good churches

1136. you know because wouldn't you

1137. think that people would just

  1138. even just

  1139. like I said

  1140. at work

  1141. at school

  1142. in the neighborhood

1143. just wherever you're out of life

  1144. wouldn't you think

1145. that if someone just saw

1146. someone just trying to live

  1147. a godly Christian life

  1148. preach the gospel

  1149. preach about Jesus

  1150. you know

1151. even if they didn't believe in it

1152. you kind of expect them to

  1153. just think like well

1154. this isn't really my thing

  1155. but hey

  1156. now look

1157. we obviously hate false religion

  1158. because we are actually

  1159. you know

1160. on the side of truth

  1161. you know

1162. so because we love christ

  1163. you know

  1164. david said

1165. I hate every false way

  1166. you know

1167. because we know the way the truth

  1168. in the life

  1169. so yeah

  1170. obviously

  1171. we're offended by hinduism

  1172. we're offended by buddhism

  1173. we're offended by islam

1174. and all these different false

  1175. religions

1176. because we know we're on the side

  1177. of truth

1178. but what's funny is when you see

  1179. people

1180. they don't even have beliefs

  1181. they don't even care

1182. they don't even believe in any religion

1183. they don't even believe anything

  1184. and yet

  1185. they're just so upset

1186. by the gospel going forth

  1187. what it really is

1188. is that they're just being tools

1189. of the devil at that point

  1190. you know

  1191. because

  1192. because unsafe people

  1193. unfortunately they walk

1194. according to the prince of the power of the air

1195. the spirit that now worketh

1196. in the children of disobedience

  1197. and so it's just

  1198. you know

1199. you think people would just be like

  1200. hey you know

  1201. whatever christians

  1202. you know

  1203. they're living a clean life

  1204. that you know

  1205. they believe in jesus

  1206. whatever

1207. but no that's not good enough

  1208. it's like they

1209. they feel that they have to persecute

  1210. god's people

  1211. and you know

  1212. and again

  1213. typically

1214. if you think about the haters

  1215. they don't typically

1216. have a lot going for themselves

  1217. like it's not like

1218. they have some awesome work

1219. for god going over here

  1220. and they just have

  1221. boku

  1222. salvations over here

1223. and just all this great preaching

1224. and all these church that they love

  1225. it's like no no

  1226. they have

  1227. stuff that they

  1228. that they hate

  1229. they have

  1230. stuff that they're against

  1231. but it seems like

1232. they don't really have a lot of good stuff

  1233. that they promote

  1234. you know

1235. and i would hate to go through life

  1236. just being against things

  1237. and not for anything

  1238. you know

  1239. i mean

  1240. imagine if our churches

  1241. were just characterized

  1242. just

  1243. just

  1244. we're just against

  1245. false religion

  1246. and we're just against

  1247. sodomites

  1248. and we're just against

  1249. whatever sin

1250. but but if we weren't for anything

  1251. right

1252. but what are we for

  1253. we're for

  1254. the Lord Jesus Christ

1255. we're for the gospel of Christ

  1256. and we have

1257. not just a negative ministry of

1258. hey let's just call out

  1259. every bad thing

  1260. it's like no

1261. the biggest part of our ministry

1262. the heartbeat of our ministry

1263. the lifeblood of our ministry

  1264. is the soul winning

  1265. i mean

  1266. all of

1267. all of our friends churches

1268. we're all aggressive about soul winning

  1269. you know

  1270. we're all just excited

  1271. to just go out

1272. and just talk to total strangers

  1273. and people

  1274. that have just

  1275. you know

1276. not even heard of us

1277. they don't know who we are

  1278. from Adam

  1279. and we just

1280. knock on some random person's door

  1281. you know

1282. I was just out doing it yesterday

  1283. you know

  1284. just

1285. knock on some random person's door

  1286. and just

  1287. tell them

1288. the glorious gospel of Jesus Christ

1289. and get those people saved

  1290. hey you know

  1291. that's the kind of a mission

1292. that can keep you going for decades

1293. that can keep you going for a lifetime

  1294. the positivity

1295. of bringing forth new life

  1296. getting people saved

1297. pulling people out of the fire

1298. preaching the gospel to every creature

  1299. you know

1300. that's going to keep you motivated

  1301. in the long run

  1302. not just like

1303. oh boy I just hate Muslims or something

  1304. you know

  1305. that's not

  1306. that's not a strategy

1307. for a lifetime of service for God

1308. and so when people are just only

  1309. banded together by hate

1310. and they're only banded together

1311. by what they don't like

1312. and what they don't approve of

  1313. you know

  1314. I mean

  1315. it's pretty weird

1316. when people spend more time

1317. listening to preachers that they hate

1318. than preachers that they love

  1319. because you know

1320. I only have so much time in my day

1321. and I only have so much energy

1322. and inclination to listen to sermons

  1323. you know

  1324. it's like

1325. if I'm going to listen to the haters

1326. and see what they're up to

1327. or am I going to listen to my friends

  1328. listen to godly men

  1329. listen to good ser-

1330. you know I'm looking down the list

1331. of sermons that have been preached

1332. I want to listen to sermons that I like

1333. that are from men of God

  1334. spirit filled

  1335. not like

  1336. hey

1337. let's just go see what the

1338. Catholics are up to all day every

  1339. I mean

1340. imagine just sitting and just listening

  1341. to hours of Catholics

1342. just just just to see what they're up to

  1343. just to nail them

1344. I'm just going to listen to hours and hours of

  1345. the Mormons

  1346. preaching

1347. you know let's just go on

  1348. Mormon.org

1349. and just listen to hours of preaching

  1350. just because I just

1351. I'm just so against Mormonism

  1352. it's like

  1353. yeah bro

1354. okay we're all against Mormonism

  1355. we're all against Catholics

1356. and we might do a little research

  1357. like

1358. hey what do Catholics believe

  1359. Mormons you know

1360. so we can preach a sermon against them

1361. and then kind of move on

  1362. with our lives

1363. but at the end of the day

1364. we're going to spend more time

  1365. studying what we like

1366. reading the word of God

1367. listening to preaching that's actually

  1368. good preaching

1369. and you know it reminds me of

1370. what I heard about people

  1371. who are trained

  1372. to spot counterfeit money

1373. typically they spend most of the time

1374. learning about the real money

1375. not necessarily just obsessing over

  1376. the fake money

1377. because the thing about the fake money

  1378. is that

1379. the fake money is constantly changing

1380. it's not like counterfeit money today

1381. is the same as counterfeit money

  1382. of five years ago

  1383. ten years ago

1384. because then it'd be too easy to spot

1385. so their ways are movable right

1386. the the counterfeit money is going to

  1387. keep change

1388. they're going to keep coming up with

1389. new ways to counterfeit and trick you

  1390. really the expert cashier

  1391. or banker or whatever

1392. is really just getting really good at

  1393. identifying the real thing

1394. they know what to look for

  1395. if it's real

1396. they're studying the real thing

1397. you know we should spend more time

  1398. studying the bible

  1399. than fixating

  1400. on false religions

  1401. false teachers

  1402. false prophets

1403. and yeah we might do a little research

  1404. to expose them

  1405. but you know

1406. it's pretty sad when that's your whole life

1407. is fixating on something that you don't

  1408. believe in

1409. fixating on something that you hate

1410. spending a bunch of time

1411. on something that you don't care about

  1412. you know we need

1413. something positive to drive us

  1414. and what drives us

  1415. in the new IFB

  1416. in churches like this

1417. you know what drives us is our

  1418. love for the lost

1419. going on getting people saved

1420. our love for the king james bible

1421. you know we love the bible

1422. and we love to talk about the bible

1423. we love to study the bible

  1424. we love

1425. you know every part of the bible

1426. we love the old testament

1427. we love the obscure passages

  1428. in the old testament

1429. we love the famous passages

1430. you know we love john 316

  1431. and song 23

  1432. and first chrithians 13

1433. but we also love all the deep dives

1434. and you know isiah jermaine

  1435. ezekiel

1436. and you know we just love the bible

1437. we want to get together

  1438. three times a week

1439. and hear the word of god

1440. because we love the word of god

1441. we want to go out and win souls to christ

1442. because we love winning souls to christ

1443. you know and there's so much

  1444. positivity

  1445. of loving our wives

1446. you know or loving our families

  1447. and loving our friends

  1448. and having fellowship

1449. and going on mission trips

  1450. and going so

1451. you know these are the things

1452. that are going to bond us together

1453. and keep us going in the long run

1454. not just like oh we share a common enemy

1455. my enemy's enemy is my friend

  1456. that's not really a great friendship

1457. but you know these haters

1458. they're they end up when they see us

1459. succeed they're much cast down

  1460. in their own eyes

1461. and they kind of know that they're

  1462. losers

1463. and that the most exciting thing

1464. that ever happened for them in their

1465. life was their their brief time with us

1466. you know what i mean

1467. it's kind of sick if you think about it

1468. it'd be like if you had some some

1469. ex-girlfriend from like years and years

  1470. ago but like

1471. that short relationship she had with

1472. you that that's kind of the most

1473. exciting thing in her life still

1474. you know it's just like wow

  1475. time to move on

1476. but the haters they can't stop

1477. because they're under the control

1478. of satan in many cases

  1479. and that's why they can't stop

1480. they're cast down in their own eyes

1481. they kind of realize how stupid they

1482. are but they just keep on going

1483. but number six look at verse

1484. number 17 it says more over in those

  1485. days

1486. the nobles of Judah sent many letters

  1487. unto Tobiah

1488. and the letters of Tobiah came unto them

1489. for there were many in Judah

  1490. sworn unto him

1491. because he was the son-in-law

1492. of Shekiniah the son of Era

  1493. and his son Johanin

1494. had taken the daughter of

1495. Micholam the son of Barakaiah

1496. and so number six is this you know

1497. some people that are on the Lord's

  1498. side

1499. they want us to be buddies with haters

  1500. but they're misguided

1501. you know even people that are on the

1502. right side they somehow just want to

  1503. get along with everyone

1504. and they want us to be buddies with

1505. haters but they're sorely misguided

1506. now what you'll notice here

1507. is that in verse 17

1508. it says you know in those days

1509. the nobles of Judah sent many letters

  1510. unto Tobiah

1511. and the letters of Tobiah came

1512. into them so there it's like

1513. they're trying to stay in touch

1514. with Tobiah and Tobiah is the bad guy

1515. and then it says in verse 18

1516. there were many in Judah

  1517. the ones in Judah

1518. these are the ones they're supposed

1519. to be on Nehemiah's team

1520. they're on the good team

1521. they're on the right side Lord's side

1522. they're sworn unto Tobiah why

  1523. well because he's the son-in-law

  1524. of Shekiniah

  1525. and his son Johanin

1526. had taken the daughter of Micholam

  1527. the son of Barakaiah

  1528. so it's like they're family

1529. you know what do you do

  1530. they're family

1531. so we gotta all try to get along

1532. you know what if they're haters

  1533. nuts to them

  1534. I don't care if it's your Siamese twin

  1535. it's like oh they're family

  1536. you know what

1537. you better be on the Lord's side

1538. and you know people that are

1539. against the work of God

  1540. going against the truth

1541. going against men of God

1542. you know just it's time to cut

  1543. those people loose

1544. you know and it's like well

  1545. you know it's my

  1546. you know uncle's cousins

  1547. second roommate or whatever

  1548. nuts to them

1549. so Tobiah is talking all this mad trash

  1550. I mean look

1551. look how much evil Tobiah

1552. has sought to do to Nehemiah

  1553. just in this chapter

1554. and again in earlier chapters

1555. Tobiah is already going after Nehemiah

  1556. in other ways

1557. but just in chapter 6 alone

1558. Tobiah is saying and doing

  1559. all these evil things

  1560. look at verse 19

  1561. it says

1562. also they reported his good deeds before me

1563. so people are coming to Nehemiah

  1564. and saying like

  1565. hey you know

1566. here's some good things about Tobiah

1567. like praising Tobiah to him

1568. and they uttered my words to him

1569. and Tobiah sent letters to put me in fear

  1570. so Tobiah is like

  1571. being super negative

  1572. toward Nehemiah

1573. but then other people are kind of

  1574. trying to tell Nehemiah

1575. hey you should be Tobiah's buddy

  1576. you know

  1577. he's not a bad guy

1578. let me tell you all the good things about him

  1579. okay

1580. now turn if you went to Proverbs chapter 26

    Proverbs 26 chapter mention

  1581. Proverbs chapter 26

    Proverbs 26 chapter mention

1582. and you know the bible says

1583. they that forsake the law praise the wicked

1584. but such as keep the law content with them

  1585. you know

1586. don't come at me praising Tobiah to be

  1587. I'm not interested

  1588. so

1589. Tobiah just needs to be shunned and avoided

  1590. and here's the thing

  1591. when people get exposed

  1592. as judices

  1593. backstabbers

  1594. infiltrators

  1595. the natural normal reaction

  1596. not as Nehemiah's reaction

1597. which is to eschew these people

  1598. right

1599. whereas there are these kind of

  1600. Rodney King types

  1601. you know

1602. can't we all just get along

1603. and they kind of want us

1604. to just be buddies with people who hate us

1605. who literally want to kill us

  1606. I mean look

1607. are Nehemiah's enemies playing games here

  1608. because last I checked

1609. they're trying to lure him

  1610. out into the countryside

1611. so that they can do mischief to him

1612. they're trying to go and kill him

1613. they're trying to get him arrested

1614. they're trying to get him in trouble

  1615. with the government

1616. they're trying to physically hurt him

1617. they're trying to destroy his reputation

1618. they are evil wicked people

  1619. and it's just like

1620. yeah but can't we just find a way to get along

  1621. folks unfortunately

1622. you're not going to be able to get along with everybody

  1623. it's a fool's errand to think

1624. that oh I'm going to be able to just

1625. you know bridge the gap

  1626. between Jesus and Satan

1627. it's just not going to work my friend

  1628. you know some people

1629. you just got to get away from them

1630. and again back to point one

1631. you know Nehemiah just didn't waste time with people

1632. he focused more on the work of God

  1633. than on

1634. feeling like he has to just endlessly dialogue

  1635. with haters

1636. because it can be just a big waste of time right

1637. look at verse 22 of chapter 26 there in Proverbs it says

1638. the words of a tail bearer are as wounds

1639. and they go down into the innermost parts of the belly

1640. another word for a tail bearer is like a

  1641. you know a gossip

  1642. a whisper

  1643. a backbiter

1644. you know something like that

1645. and it says in verse 23 burning lips

  1646. and a wicked heart

1647. are like a potchard covered with silver draws

1648. right is there's no value on the inside

1649. it just has a shiny coating on the outside

1650. look at verse 24 he that hated

  1651. dissembleth with his lips

1652. and the word dissembl means there you know

  1653. that he's being deceitful

1654. he's pretending to be something that he's not

1655. he that hated dissembleth with his lips

1656. and layeth up deceit within him

1657. when he speaketh fair believe him not

1658. for there are seven abominations in his heart

1659. and this goes back again

1660. to some of the early points of the sermon

1661. where these guys are trying to convince Nehemiah

1662. oh we want to counsel with you

1663. we want to meet with you

1664. we want to hear your side

1665. we want to talk to you

1666. we want to be your friend

1667. you know the bible say look

1668. when you've seen someone exposed

  1669. as a tail bearer

  1670. as a rotten person

  1671. as a hater

1672. he that hated dissembleth with his lips

1673. he's trying to deceive you

1674. he's going to flatter you

1675. but he's setting a trap for you

1676. so it says when he speaketh fair

1677. verse 25 believe him not

1678. for there are seven abominations in his heart

1679. whose hatred is covered by deceit

1680. his wickedness shall be showed

  1681. before the whole congregation

1682. you know ultimately these people get exposed

  1683. before the entire church

  1684. because congregation and church

1685. are used interchangeably in the scripture

1686. whose hatred is covered by deceit

1687. his wickedness shall be showed

  1688. before the whole congregation

1689. whoso digeth a pit shall fall therein

1690. and he that rolleth a stone

1691. it will return upon him

  1692. a lying tongue

1693. hateeth those that are afflicted by it

1694. and a flattering mouth worketh ruin

1695. and so notice the repetition of this word

  1696. over and over again

1697. because in verse 24 it said

  1698. he that hateeth

  1699. in verse 26

1700. whose hatred is covered by deceit

  1701. verse number 28 a lying tongue

1702. hate these are the haters

1703. what's the title of the story

1704. you say what are you talking about

  1705. haters pastor arson

1706. what is this slang that you speak of

  1707. you know the hater

1708. the devices of the haters

1709. what kind of a sermon title is that

1710. well you know the bible's talking about

  1711. some haters here

  1712. right

1713. and they lie and they hide the fact

  1714. that they're haters

1715. and then you'll have these people

  1716. that come along

1717. and they want you to be buddies

  1718. with these people

1719. they want you to be friends with

  1720. no look

1721. you know we had a guy in our church

  1722. not that long ago

1723. who was pretending to be our friend

1724. and it turned out that his goal

1725. was to quote gather evidence

1726. against me and my wife

  1727. because he literally wanted

1728. to take our children away

1729. and send us to prison

1730. okay so this guy is coming over to our

  1731. house

1732. you know my wife's cooking them

1733. all these five star meals

1734. because my wife is incredible cook

1735. and so she's cooking all these

  1736. five star meals

  1737. for this totally unworthy

  1738. ungrateful punk

1739. who's pretending to be our friend

1740. pretending that he loves us

1741. pretending to just want to spend time

  1742. with us

1743. and really he's secretly conniving

1744. and out of his own mouth

  1745. he's quote unquote

  1746. gathering evidence

1747. and wants me and my wife

  1748. to go to prison

  1749. okay that's pretty serious

1750. all while pretending to be our friends

1751. hanging out with our kids

1752. you know under false pretenses

  1753. and so forth

1754. and then after all this

  1755. he admits quote

  1756. there's no actual evidence

1757. you know so he spends

1758. months and months trying to

  1759. get with my kids

1760. and talk to them privately

1761. and get them to say something

1762. he's coming to our house

  1763. week after week

1764. and just trying to gather evidence

  1765. or you know

  1766. this Barney Fife

  1767. over here

  1768. because he's

1769. literally a cop as well by the way

  1770. but he's a highway patrolman

1771. but he thinks he's like

  1772. super detective

  1773. I don't know who's the famous detective

1774. that is in all those

  1775. Agatha Christie

  1776. what's

  1777. what's

  1778. hair-cured plow row

1779. yeah so we got plow row over

1780. we got Colombo over here

  1781. you know we got

  1782. it's like

1783. he thinks that he's just

  1784. Sherlock Holmes over here

1785. you know it's like bro

1786. he's just coming to our house

1787. and spending all this time

  1788. talking to everybody

1789. and then at the end of it

  1790. it's like oh snap

  1791. quote

  1792. there is no evidence

  1793. okay this bozo

1794. but this is what's so funny about this

1795. I mean the guy is admitting

1796. to come into our house

  1797. under false pretenses

1798. to gather evidence to try to

  1799. slander us

1800. and to get our children to

1801. and do all these things

1802. and then this is what he does

1803. after that he whines about how

1804. oh I came to this church for years

1805. and then everybody just turned on me

  1806. so fast

1807. when they found this out

1808. that I was doing this

  1809. it's like yaw

1810. how could people not turn on you fast

1811. when they find out you're a Judas Iscariot

1812. it's not like they're going to be like

1813. oh well let's sit down and talk about this

1814. you know I'm sorry but when

1815. someone wants you in prison

1816. and they want to steal your children from you

1817. you can't quote work things out

1818. with that kind of person

1819. I mean if people are trying to kill you

1820. if people are trying to put you in prison

1821. if people are trying to destroy you

  1822. and destroy your life

1823. and kidnap your family members

1824. and send armed people to your house

1825. to kidnap your family members

1826. I'm sorry but you can't just kind of like

1827. work now let's just sit down

1828. and work things out with these people

  1829. right

  1830. in fact

1831. maybe I should just take a little time off

  1832. from pastoring

1833. just so I can just kind of work things out

1834. with these with these people

1835. it's like no that's not really the way it works

1836. because at the end of the day

1837. these people you can't work things out with them

1838. we're not gonna we don't need to sit down

  1839. with Gishem the Arabian

1840. we don't need to sit down

1841. with San Bal at the Horonite

1842. we don't need to sit down with Tobiah

1843. these people just need to be eschewed

1844. that's what Nehemiah was smart enough to know

1845. and you know what he's constantly just talking to God

1846. in the book of Nehemiah

1847. which one interesting thing about Nehemiah

1848. is he'll be telling the story about what happened

1849. and then he'll just stop and be like God

  1850. remember me

  1851. this is what happened

  1852. remember these people

  1853. Lord punish these people

1854. Lord bless me help me out

1855. he just stops and prays over and over again

1856. throughout the book of Nehemiah

1857. because he realizes that you know what

1858. talking to these people is not going to fix it

  1859. you know

1860. the only person you can really talk to

1861. that can fix it is God

1862. he's talking to God about it

1863. throughout the book of Nehemiah

1864. but at the end of the day

  1865. he just says no

1866. I'm not coming to the meeting

1867. I'm not coming to see Gishem

1868. I'm not hanging out with Tobiah

1869. I'm too busy doing a great work for God

1870. and so let me give you a conclusion here

1871. that kind of ties it all together

  1872. because we you know

1873. we just worked through the entire chapter didn't we

1874. I mean we just read through the entire chapter of Nehemiah 6

1875. and as we went through the chapter of Nehemiah 6

1876. we saw all these different strategies

1877. that Tobiah and his friends are trying to use

1878. to hurt and to harm and destroy Nehemiah

1879. and let me just boil down for you

  1880. Nehemiah's response

1881. how did Nehemiah handle it

1882. because Nehemiah ends up a success

1883. you know and and when we get all the way to Nehemiah chapter 13

    Nehemiah 13 chapter mention

1884. there's still people that are rebelling against God

1885. the haters are still there in chapter 13

1886. in chapter 13 you get to the end of Nehemiah

1887. the haters have not gone anywhere

1888. and you still have the sympathizers

1889. trying to be buddies with the haters

1890. all the way in chapter 13

1891. you get to chapter 13

1892. and they've like moved one of the haters

1893. into this room in the temple

1894. and Nehemiah is just like throwing his stuff on the sidewalk

1895. I mean in chapter 13 Nehemiah is chasing people

  1896. ripping out their hair

1897. you know doing all kinds of things

  1898. he's still fighting

  1899. he's still kicking

1900. he's still alive and kicking

1901. but at the end of the day Nehemiah is a success

1902. Nehemiah is the one who God blessed

1903. he got the wall finished

  1904. the wall stayed up

  1905. the people continued

1906. and you know mission accomplished

1907. as far as Nehemiah is concerned

1908. he gets a whole book of the bible named after him

1909. and he did great work for God

1910. but what did he do

1911. what did we see him respond

  1912. in chapter 6

  1913. well number one

1914. he didn't waste time on the bozos

1915. he did not waste time on bozos

1916. he didn't get sucked in

  1917. to endless arguments

  1918. endless conversations

  1919. vein jangling

  1920. going back forth

1921. I mean what does the bible say

  1922. a man that is a heretic

1923. at the first and second ammunition reject

1924. what does the bible say

1925. it said go from the presence of a foolish man

  1926. even if he's not a heretic

1927. if he's just an idiot

1928. go from the presence of a foolish man

1929. when they'll perceive us not in him

  1930. the lips of knowledge

  1931. there are certain people

1932. that just aren't worth the time

1933. you don't have to just engage

1934. with every back and forth

  1935. especially online

  1936. but also in person

  1937. so number one

1938. he didn't waste time on the bozos

  1939. number two

1940. he did rebuke the lies

1941. and false accusations when necessary

  1942. you know

  1943. but again

1944. he's not really required to

1945. if people lie about you

  1946. and you know

1947. you could just ignore it too

1948. you don't even always have to respond

  1949. but you know

  1950. sometimes it is appropriate

  1951. to rebuke the lies

1952. and false accusations when necessary

  1953. number three

  1954. what did neomai do

1955. he kept on working hard for the lord

1956. and there's a saying that people use

1957. that the best revenge is to live well

  1958. but you know

1959. let me just put a little spin on that

  1960. for the christian

1961. and say you know what

1962. the best revenge against the people

1963. that are trying to stop the work of god

  1964. is to just

1965. push the work of god forward

  1966. full speed ahead

  1967. overcome evil with good

1968. by doing your best work for god

  1969. you know

1970. instead of having to take vengeance

  1971. and defeat them

1972. here's the way we're going to defeat them

1973. by going on and doing

  1974. huge works for god

  1975. that'll show them

  1976. that'll shut them up

  1977. and then they can

1978. huff and puff publicly all they want

  1979. but we know

  1980. that secretly privately

1981. they're cast down in their own eyes

  1982. they know it

  1983. we know it

  1984. god knows it

  1985. number four

  1986. he prayed for courage

  1987. you know

1988. he didn't succumb to fear

1989. he didn't give in to the intimidation

  1990. and fear

  1991. he prayed for courage

  1992. number five

1993. he didn't envy the wicked

  1994. right

1995. because their life is garbage anyway

1996. you don't want to trade

1997. do you want to trade places with the wicked

  1998. absolutely not

  1999. okay

2000. they might have on the outside

  2001. something going for them

  2002. but you know what

2003. at the end of the day

  2004. don't envy the wicked

  2005. because they are losers

  2006. and they know it

  2007. and god knows it

2008. and if you don't know it

  2009. well

  2010. you know

2011. you got to trust god

  2012. that it's true

  2013. because it is

  2014. and then lastly

  2015. this number six

2016. you cut people out of your life

  2017. once you know

  2018. that they're backstabbers

  2019. you just avoid them

  2020. you know

  2021. and and honestly

2022. there have been people in my life

  2023. where you know

2024. I just had to just cut people out of my life

2025. and people will criticize you

  2026. for doing this sometimes

  2027. when you just

2028. when you just cut ties

  2029. with certain people

2030. and just cut people out of your life

  2031. but when someone shows

2032. themselves to be a conniving

  2033. backstabber

  2034. a Judas

  2035. a backbiter

  2036. a whisperer

  2037. an enemy

  2038. a frenemy

  2039. somebody who is

  2040. you know

  2041. maliciously

  2042. just

  2043. trying to flatter you

  2044. and what you know

2045. once once a person like that is exposed

2046. just cut those people loose

  2047. you know

  2048. and I've I've cut ties

2049. with people in my life

  2050. and there's

  2051. you know I'm 45 years old

2052. and I've kind of been through the

  2053. ringer

  2054. you know

  2055. because I've been

  2056. obviously aggressively

  2057. preaching God's work for 21 years

  2058. I've been aggressively

  2059. pastoring

  2060. and and preaching

  2061. and very public

2062. and and trying to really push myself

  2063. and do a lot

  2064. and so you know

  2065. I've I've been through a lot of stuff

  2066. and you know

2067. there have been a lot of attacks

  2068. and haters

  2069. and backstabbers

  2070. and bozos

  2071. over the years

  2072. that I've cut off

  2073. and you know what

2074. there's not a single one of them

  2075. where I'm like

  2076. oh I regret

2077. cutting that person out of my life

2078. but there are a lot of people

  2079. where I'm like

2080. I should have cut that person out of my life a lot sooner

2081. you know what I mean

  2082. and so

  2083. unfortunately life is short

  2084. okay life is short

2085. and so just feeling like

2086. you just have to keep everyone in your life

  2087. that's holding you back

  2088. that's slowing you down

  2089. malicious rotten

  2090. evil toxic people

  2091. you know what

2092. just life is too short

2093. to keep those people in your life

  2094. cut them loose

  2095. okay now again

  2096. you know

2097. lest some bozo twist the sermon

2098. that doesn't go for your spouse

  2099. okay

2100. you never cut your spouse loose

  2101. okay

2102. because it's till death do us part

2103. in case you've been listening to any of the sermons

  2104. from Faithful Word lately

2105. you know that's been a little bit of a theme lately

2106. you know we've been preaching hard

2107. on the sanctity of marriage

  2108. and staying married

2109. and staying faithful to your spouse

  2110. you know being married

2111. that's not an optional relationship

2112. you know that's a vow that you made

  2113. you keep your vow

  2114. you stay married

  2115. you stay faithful

  2116. it's for life

  2117. okay so

  2118. there are certain people

  2119. in our lives

  2120. that are non-negotiable

  2121. you know

2122. obviously we got to honor our father and mother

  2123. no matter what

2124. and we've got to be faithful to our spouse

  2125. no matter what

  2126. but guess what

  2127. there are other people

2128. in the periphery of our lives

  2129. that are more optional

2130. you don't have to hang around

  2131. with every single person

2132. you don't have to spend time

  2133. with every single person

2134. and just because they're your second cousin

  2135. once removed

2136. doesn't mean that you have to have that person

  2137. in your life

2138. because you know at the end of the day

  2139. who is my mother

  2140. who are my brethren

  2141. you know it's

2142. at the end of the day

2143. Jesus stretched forth his hand

  2144. towards his disciples

  2145. and said

2146. behold my mother and my brother

2147. for whosoever shall do the will of my father

  2148. which is in heaven

2149. the same is my mother

  2150. and sister and brother

2151. at the end of the day

  2152. you know

2153. the ultimate family for us

2154. is the people of God

2155. and it's great when our physical relatives

  2156. love God

2157. and we can share things with them

  2158. and it's a blessing

  2159. when our physical

  2160. biological family members

2161. are on the same page with us spiritually

2162. and want to support us

  2163. and they

2164. you know they're happy when we succeed

  2165. they're happy when we're thriving

2166. and they rejoice when we rejoice

2167. and they weep when we

  2168. when we weep

2169. because they actually love us

  2170. you know that's a beautiful relationship

2171. when we can have those biological relatives

2172. that we can have good

  2173. beautiful relationships with

2174. but you know at the end of the day

2175. just because I have shared DNA with someone

  2176. who's a rotten person

2177. it's just like cut them loose

2178. because at the end of the day

2179. the spirit is what matters

2180. you know and I'm not trying

2181. to just be best buddies

  2182. with every relative

  2183. that's an atheist

  2184. or just that's a rotten person

2185. or that's cheering for my downfall

2186. or cheering for my destruction

2187. you know at the end of the day

2188. you know with friends like those

  2189. who needs enemies

2190. you know and so that's what

  2191. I learned from Nehemiah

  2192. in Nehemiah chapter six

2193. you know he had a great response

2194. to these machinations of the haters

2195. by not wasting time on bozos

2196. and continuing to work hard for the Lord

2197. just you know constantly looking to God

  2198. for strength courage

  2199. keep going push through

2200. cut people loose when necessary

  2201. that's why he's a great man of God

  2202. and a great leader

2203. and you know whoever you are out there

  2204. man woman boy girl

2205. you know obviously I preach these things

2206. from the perspective of a pastor

  2207. because I am a pastor

2208. you know so that's how I think

  2209. and obviously

2210. other pastors that are hearing the sermon

  2211. you know they're like

2212. understanding that point of view

2213. but really the sermon goes for every single person

  2214. because like I said

  2215. it's not only pastors

  2216. that have haters

  2217. you know just

2218. as soon as you start doing something big for God

  2219. even if it's as a layman

2220. there are going to be people

2221. who try to take you down a notch

  2222. I mean I remember when I was 17

  2223. and 18

  2224. just a nobody

  2225. just a teenager

  2226. I had no following

  2227. I wasn't well known

  2228. nobody cared

2229. and yet there were just constant people

2230. in my life trying to discourage me

2231. as I started going soul winning

2232. they're trying to make fun of soul winning

2233. discourage me from soul winning

2234. telling me not to go soul winning

2235. telling me that soul winning doesn't work

2236. trying to take me aside

2237. and sit down with me

2238. and trying to get the King James Bible

  2239. away from me

2240. and trying to get me on the NIV

2241. and trying to get me on the ESV

2242. and it's like there were all these people

2243. trying to oppose the direction that I was going

  2244. not supportive

  2245. not encouraging me

2246. you know and I guarantee you

2247. you're going to have people in your life

2248. like that that try to stop you

2249. and fight you and slow you down

  2250. and persecute you because

2251. all who will live godly in Christ Jesus

  2252. just have persecution

2253. and so you know when that happens

  2254. just think about Nehemiah

2255. and just think about hey this is

  2256. this is life

2257. this is the way it's going to be

2258. I got to push through

2259. I'm not going to fixate

  2260. waste time

2261. you know blow them off

  2262. cut them loose

2263. let the dead bury their dead

2264. go preach the kingdom of God

2265. and do something great for God

2266. and try to have some positive in your life

2267. that you focus on right

2268. because I don't want to just go through life

  2269. focus on negative things

  2270. because it's going to it's

2271. it's bad for your digestion

2272. you know you're going to get a stomach pain

2273. right I want to go through life

2274. thinking about okay what's something

  2275. I can build

2276. what's something positive that we can do

2277. you know you got to have those things

  2278. that are lovely

2279. you got to have those things that are true

  2280. honest just pure lovely

  2281. and a good report

2282. to fixate on in your life

2283. and you know nuts to the haters

2284. let's bow our heads and have a word of prayer

2285. Father we thank you so much

  2286. for your word

2287. thank you for this great chapter

  2288. Nehemiah chapter 6 Lord

    Nehemiah 6 chapter mention

2289. help us to take inspiration

  2290. from Nehemiah Lord

2291. and take lessons on how to deal with

  2292. the the the naysayers

2293. and the opponents that were

  2294. inevitably going to face

2295. when the great door is open and effectual

2296. there will always be many adversaries Lord

2297. they know their losers Lord

2298. help us to just not get discouraged

2299. but to follow Nehemiah's playbook

2300. and in Jesus name we pray amen
