Sacrifices in Leviticus - Pastor Jonathan Shelley | Stedfast Baptist Church

-
And then the title of my sermon this morning
-
is sacrifices in Leviticus, sacrifices in Leviticus.
-
And now these first several chapters here
-
leading up to about chapter 10 really deal
-
with a lot of the animal sacrifices of the Old Testament.
-
And of course Leviticus is named because
-
of the fact that this is dealing with
-
the Levitical priesthood for the most part.
-
These are the instructions for the priesthood
-
and what they're gonna be doing.
-
And it's not arbitrary.
-
Of course, when you read the Bible,
-
especially maybe the first time
-
or when you're young or when you're not even saved,
-
you read the Old Testament law
-
and it just seems confusing.
-
There's a lot of animal sacrifices.
-
They don't make very much sense.
-
But when you become saved and you understand the gospel,
-
you can actually see a different layer
-
to a lot of the Levitical priesthood.
-
And I wanna keep your finger here,
-
but go to Psalm 119 in the middle of your Bible
-
for a second.
-
And I wanna show you just one verse
-
that I wanted to pick out of Psalm 119,
-
but the Bible tells us that it's a spiritual book.
-
It's not just carnal instructions.
-
It's not just history.
-
There's a spiritual layer.
-
And the Bible itself,
-
everything is pointing to the gospel.
-
Everything in creation is pointing to the gospel.
-
Everything in the Bible, all the stories,
-
all the examples are pointing to the gospel.
-
And in fact, even the law
-
is pointing to the gospel message.
-
And in Psalm 119,
-
I wanna look at verse 18.
-
The Bible says,
-
open thou mine eyes
-
that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law.
-
So this verse, I think what's interesting about it
-
is it's kind of telling us that there's a second meaning
-
or there's something that can be seen in the law
-
that you wouldn't just get without God helping you.
-
And it says open thou mine eyes.
-
This is typically a reference to being saved.
-
When you get saved,
-
the Bible talks about your eyes being enlightened
-
and you're getting a new understanding.
-
Now you can see God.
-
Of course, that's language that's used by Jesus Christ
-
when talking with Nicodemus
-
and talking about being able to see God.
-
And of course, that's used
-
in other parts of the gospel messages.
-
And so when you become saved,
-
you not only see the law for what it is,
-
of course, it's perfect.
-
It's what we should do as humans on this earth.
-
We should abide by God's law,
-
whether that be just his moral instruction,
-
whether that be his civic duties,
-
whether that be a criminal justice system,
-
just national policy.
-
Just all of those ideas are all great
-
and there's nothing wrong with them.
-
We can all understand them.
-
In fact, an unsaved person can understand
-
that just the carnal truths of the Bible,
-
but beyond that, there's a spiritual layer
-
and there's a spiritual layer
-
to the sacrificial system in Leviticus.
-
And when you read it,
-
it's kind of just boring and dry, if you ask me.
-
But when you kind of think about it
-
from a gospel perspective,
-
it becomes a little bit more engaging.
-
And so that's what I want to do
-
is I want to go back to Leviticus
-
and we're hoping that God will help us
-
open our eyes that we can behold wondrous things
-
out of the law.
-
And these wondrous things, I believe,
-
are pertaining to Christ, the gospel
-
and just the doctrine associated
-
with the gospel specifically.
-
Now here in Leviticus chapter one, verse one,
-
he says,
-
And the Lord called on the Moses and spake him
-
out of the tabernacle of the congregation saying,
-
Speak unto the children of Israel
-
and say unto them, if any man of you
-
bring an offering unto the Lord,
-
ye shall bring your offering of the cattle,
-
even of the herd and of the flock.
-
If his offering be a burnt sacrifice of the herd,
-
let him offer a male without blemish.
-
He shall offer it of his own voluntary will
-
at the door of the tabernacle
-
of the congregation before the Lord.
-
So you have, you know, in these chapters, divisions,
-
you have in some senses a little bit
-
of a different flavor of the different sacrifices.
-
In chapter one, you kind of have a burnt offering.
-
That's kind of the main focus of chapter number one
-
is this burnt sacrifice.
-
Now you also have in this particular section
-
in verse three, notice it says
-
that the person doing this offering
-
is supposed to offer it of his own voluntary will.
-
You know, God put the word voluntary there
-
for the Calvinist to look that much more stupid, okay?
-
Because it's just like, hey, you get to choose
-
if you want to.
-
Like how can you be a Calvinist
-
and then understand this word voluntary will?
-
That, you know, and that's what makes God special.
-
What makes God special and unique from humans
-
is how his will can be accomplished
-
while still giving us an actual voluntary free will.
-
The Bible tells us that we have a true, genuine free will
-
and we can really do whatever we want.
-
But while we have that autonomy,
-
God can still accomplish his ultimate will
-
and still accomplish the main objectives
-
of the gospel message,
-
even though we have our own faculties,
-
we have our own abilities.
-
You know, I typically relate that to sports or something.
-
It's like, if you were just so good that it's like,
-
I know that you have the ability to play against me
-
but no matter how good you are,
-
how much you try, you're gonna lose the game.
-
Like I'm gonna beat you
-
and not only am I gonna beat you,
-
I know every move you're gonna make.
-
Like when I go left, you're gonna go right
-
and then I'm gonna score, I'm gonna dunk on you.
-
And in fact, and sometimes people love to talk trash
-
this way, they'll even say like,
-
hey, I know you're gonna do this
-
and I'm just gonna stop you
-
or I'm gonna score on you this way
-
or they just tell you the play beforehand
-
or they tell you what's gonna happen beforehand
-
and then they do it.
-
That's much more impressive
-
than if someone were to do that to a robot.
-
If you just have a robot and say, hey, look,
-
I'm gonna make this move
-
and then the robot's gonna respond counter-wise.
-
You think like, well, that's not as impressive
-
as giving someone true free will
-
and allowing them to make their own decisions
-
and then still God's able to accomplish His will.
-
But what is this really ultimately picture?
-
Well, a couple of things that it pictures.
-
Let's go to Matthew chapter number 12 for a moment.
-
Go to Matthew chapter number 12.
-
The Bible pretty much has almost every sacrifice
-
as being a burnt sacrifice in some way.
-
Now some are just entirely burnt.
-
Like that's the only portion of the sacrifice.
-
But I believe because the gospel is so complex
-
and there's so much depth to it
-
and because the gospel and what Christ did
-
has so many layers
-
that we have so many different sacrifices
-
because we're picturing different layers of the gospel
-
and different things that's being accomplished
-
by Jesus Christ.
-
It can't necessarily all be embodied by one example
-
or just one metaphor or one symbol.
-
And one of the aspects of the sacrifice of Christ
-
which is not necessarily popular by many pastors
-
but I think that just the general population
-
has no problem with doctrine
-
is the fact that Jesus Christ really went to hell.
-
And it's kind of surprising to me now.
-
I feel like our country has become so decristionized
-
that many people don't even know the stories of the Bible.
-
And one of the stories that I found
-
was probably the most famous stories
-
or a story that most people would always hear
-
is Jonah and the whale.
-
And yet I go knock on doors and I'm like,
-
hey have you heard of Jonah and the whale?
-
And they're just like, I have no idea
-
what you're talking about.
-
And it's kind of sad because it's a great story.
-
It's very familiar.
-
It's the one thing everybody remembers
-
out of the minor prophets.
-
You're like, I don't know anything in minor prophets
-
but I remember Jonah and the whale.
-
It's kind of a fun story.
-
And yet Jesus references that about himself.
-
Look what it says in verse 39.
-
But he answered and said in them,
-
an evil and adulterous generation
-
seek it after a sign
-
and there shall no sign be given to it
-
but the sign of the prophet Jonas.
-
For his Jonas was three days and three nights
-
in the whale's belly.
-
So shall the Son of man be three days and three nights
-
in the heart of the earth.
-
So according to the Bible,
-
Jesus is comparing himself to Jonah
-
and saying the picture of Jonah is really about me
-
and how I'm gonna be in the heart of the earth
-
three days and three nights.
-
But most people if I ask them, hey,
-
do you know where Jesus went after he died?
-
They say heaven.
-
A lot of people think that Jesus went immediately to heaven
-
but the Bible teaches he first descended
-
into the depths of the earth
-
or as the Bible says right here
-
into the heart of the earth
-
that would be like the center of the earth.
-
And so that's where we get a lot of doctrine.
-
We understand hell itself is in the center of the earth
-
and of course that's why so many of the sacrifices
-
are talking about being a burnt offering
-
and being roast with fire.
-
It's because of this picture of Christ is gonna go
-
and perform this sacrifice for us.
-
Now let's get more details on this.
-
Go to Jonah itself, go back a little bit
-
and go to Jonah itself in the Old Testament.
-
So we're beholding wonders, things out of the law
-
and you know some people get upset about this doctrine
-
but then you're like okay,
-
well what does the burnt sacrifice mean?
-
Because it's heavily emphasized.
-
Burnt sacrifice or being roast with fire
-
is not a minimum thing in the Bible.
-
In fact it's reiterated over and over and over again
-
and I would even argue that from an Old Testament picture
-
and the foreshadowing of the Old Testament
-
it's emphasized more than the cross itself would be.
-
But that doesn't mean that the cross is less
-
or not emphasized or not important
-
and of course the New Testament seems to emphasize
-
the cross more than Jesus going to hell
-
but the Old Testament seems to picture the burnt sacrifice
-
more than the pictures of the cross.
-
And so we don't wanna sit here and just pick and choose
-
and say well one matters and the other doesn't
-
or this one's the only one that we should talk about.
-
I think we should talk about both.
-
And the Old Testament is still just as relevant
-
to the gospel messages of the New Testament.
-
The Bible says in Jonah chapter two it says
-
is then Jonah prayed on the Lord his God
-
out of the fish's belly and said I cried
-
by reason of mind affliction unto the Lord
-
and he heard me out of the belly of hell cried I
-
and thou hurtest my voice.
-
Notice when Jonah is describing what it was like
-
to be in a whale's belly or the great fish's belly
-
he describes it as the belly of hell.
-
And again this is a metaphor for Jonah.
-
Jonah wasn't literally in hell, we get that.
-
Jonah is using this language to describe
-
what it feels like, what he's experiencing.
-
And in some ways if you think about it
-
there's a lot of parallels because in the whale's belly
-
there's no light, it's complete darkness.
-
There's complete darkness, he's alone
-
and the fish even is gonna be obviously
-
submerged underneath the water.
-
So it's kind of picturing being underneath,
-
being in a prison, there's just complete darkness.
-
So some aspects of this experience
-
are gonna mimic those things in hell.
-
I have no idea what it would have been like physically.
-
It could have been warm.
-
I mean in most cases the stomach is a warm place.
-
You know it's considered a mammal, I don't know why
-
but by scientific classification it's considered a mammal
-
and so you know it could have been hot.
-
It could have been very uncomfortable.
-
There could have been, even potentially
-
the acid in there could have been a burning sensation.
-
I don't think he was dying necessarily
-
but he's probably close to, probably felt like it.
-
I can't even imagine, usually when you're in pain
-
five minutes seems like five hours.
-
I can't imagine three days.
-
It might have felt like eternity.
-
And in fact maybe from like other portions of scripture
-
or maybe God gave him wisdom
-
that he would know in three days he's gonna be getting out
-
but when you don't know that you're getting out
-
it's a really hopeless feeling.
-
And you're kinda just wishing to die
-
and by dying like in a sense of ceasing the pain.
-
And that's again what's gonna be experienced in hell.
-
People are gonna be in hell wishing to not exist anymore.
-
Wishing for the pain to stop.
-
Wondering when is it gonna be over?
-
And the unfortunate part for them is it's never over.
-
It's never gonna end.
-
There's weeping and gnashing of teeth
-
and of course it's even more excruciating
-
because it's actual fire, it's actual burning.
-
Yet in an incredible way while there's fire
-
it's outer darkness in a sense.
-
So I have no idea how any of that makes sense.
-
It's a scary place.
-
If you tried to dream up the worst punishment imaginable
-
you will land at hell.
-
In every category hell is the worst.
-
Possible in every category in every way.
-
And of course that's because God is gonna punish sin
-
because he hates sin and his wrath
-
is kindled against hell.
-
And the Bible says just as Jonah was here
-
in this metaphorical sense, Jesus really was there.
-
So this is what's interesting about the book of Jonah
-
is it's like Jonah's saying these things
-
but then it's like literally true
-
for the Lord Jesus Christ.
-
He says in verse three,
-
for thou hast cast me into the deep
-
in the midst of the seas and the floods
-
compass me about all thy bills
-
and thy ways passed over me.
-
Then I said I'm cast out of thy sight
-
yet I will look again toward thy holy temple.
-
The waters compass me about even to the soul.
-
The depth closes me round about
-
the weeds are wrapped around about my head.
-
So again, weeds being wrapped around his head.
-
That's Jonah that we're talking about of course.
-
But it says here
-
and I went down to the bottoms of the mountains
-
the earth of the bars is about me forever
-
yet hast thou brought up my life from corruption
-
oh Lord my God.
-
Verse six doesn't really make as much sense for Jonah.
-
It's more metaphorical but for Christ
-
the earth really was about Christ
-
in the sense that he's in the center of the earth.
-
So it's kind of like metaphoric for Jonah
-
it's literal for Jesus Christ
-
because for Jonah it's metaphor
-
that he's in the belly of hell.
-
For Jesus he really is in the belly of hell
-
and so if you kind of see chapter two
-
it almost seems like it kind of goes back and forth.
-
It's like two is about Christ
-
and then three is about Jonah
-
and then four is about Christ
-
and then fives about Jonah
-
and then six is about Christ.
-
And so kind of as it's like alternating pattern
-
and when it's about Christ
-
it's a metaphor for Jonah
-
but it's literal for the Lord Jesus Christ.
-
Now let's go to Acts chapter two
-
and let's confirm what we've just seen in the scripture
-
but in the Old Testament law
-
you would have a burnt sacrifice
-
and you would burn this animal
-
and what is that to foreshadow into picture
-
is how Christ was gonna go to hell
-
and he was gonna suffer for us.
-
Acts chapter number two
-
look what it says in verse number 27
-
because let's do verse 26
-
therefore did my heart rejoice
-
and my tongue was glad
-
moreover also my flesh shall rest in hope
-
because that will not leave my soul in hell
-
neither wilt thou suffer thine holy ones
-
as the corruptions.
-
Now for Christ he did know that it was temporary.
-
He did know that he would eventually come out
-
and he said that's the only hope he had
-
because if you're in hell
-
your only hope is you're getting out
-
for those that are not getting out there is no hope.
-
He says thou has made known to me the ways of life
-
thou shalt make me full of joy with thy countenance
-
men and brethren let me freely speak unto you
-
of the patriarch David
-
that he's both dead and buried in sepulchre
-
as with us under this day
-
therefore being a prophet
-
and knowing that God had sworn
-
with an oath to him
-
that of the fruit of his loins
-
according to the flesh he would raise up Christ
-
to sit on his throne.
-
He's saying this before spake of the resurrection of Christ
-
that his soul is not left in hell
-
neither is flesh to see corruption.
-
So in the Psalms which we're not gonna go to
-
we could prove this doctrine so many different times
-
but if we go back to the Psalms
-
David in the book of Psalms is being quoted
-
as talking about his flesh resting in hope
-
because his soul is not gonna be left in hell
-
but it's like then the author needs to explain to us
-
and Peter is kind of explaining
-
but he's not talking about himself
-
because number one, David's flesh is gone.
-
David's flesh saw corruption.
-
David's sepulchre we have a sepulchre
-
we could go get his bones out right now.
-
But they don't have the bones of Christ
-
they don't have the flesh of Christ
-
it's resurrected and it's in heaven right now.
-
And he's saying he wasn't talking about himself
-
he was talking about someone else
-
of his physical decency
-
someone that was a physical son of David
-
that was going to be in hell
-
and who were we talking about?
-
He was speaking before of the resurrection of Christ
-
that his soul was not gonna be left in hell
-
and that his flesh was not gonna see corruption
-
meaning that his body wasn't gonna rot
-
and decompose and turn into bones
-
and we would have his sepulchre
-
we don't have his sepulchre
-
you know of the people that have lived
-
and died on this earth
-
you know we have their dust at least
-
you know whether they've been buried
-
or cremated or whatever you wanna think of
-
we have their dust
-
and yet we don't have the body of Christ
-
the most influential person of all history
-
we have no burial site where his body is
-
you know we have the tomb
-
the stone was rolled away and the tomb was empty
-
and so the Jews had to lie and say
-
oh well the disciples secretly buried him
-
and in order to deny Christ
-
you have to believe the disciples secretly buried Jesus
-
and then went out and lived lives of misery
-
and woe and ultimate sacrifice
-
and martyred him for no reason
-
like if you're gonna make up a lie
-
wouldn't you wanna make up a lie for money
-
or make up a lie for fame
-
or make up a like why do you have to lie
-
to be martyred
-
to be killed and persecuted and hated
-
you know that's typically not
-
you're not usually willing to die for a lie
-
especially a lie that you made up about yourself
-
you know be estranged from your own family
-
and just being out in the world where everybody's hating you
-
and being beaten and being put in prison
-
and being killed and people just being mad at you
-
just a lie about some guy's body that you buried somewhere
-
you know that's what the secular is
-
that's what the atheists have to believe
-
and it makes no sense
-
there's no motive
-
no it's obvious that they died
-
because they saw the resurrected Lord Jesus Christ
-
that they were saved
-
that they were filled with the spirit of God
-
and they are willing to suffer the affliction
-
and be a partaker of Christ's sufferings
-
just like what Christ did
-
and of course we don't have Christ's body
-
because he suffered in hell
-
now again some people would say well he went to hell
-
but he didn't suffer
-
you know that kind of creates a weird idea
-
because then we have to create a compartment in hell
-
that's not suffering
-
whereas the simple understanding would just be it's suffering
-
okay also Christ isn't saying here like in verse 26
-
well my heart did rejoice
-
because of the special compartment
-
where there's no suffering
-
now what did he say
-
he said that the only thing that he had hope in
-
is that he wasn't going to be left there
-
so he didn't like it at very minimum
-
but even then in this chapter
-
you have even more clear verse
-
it says in verse 23
-
him being delivered by the determinate counsel
-
and foreknowledge of God
-
you have taken
-
and by wicked hands of crucified and slain
-
here's another verse that the Calvinist can't understand
-
but notice it's like hey
-
by the foreknowledge of God
-
he knew that you guys were going to take Jesus
-
and you were going to crucify him
-
it's not that they didn't do that of their own will
-
it's just God knew exactly what they were going to do
-
before they even did it
-
now it says in verse 24
-
whom God hath raised up
-
having loosed the pains of death
-
because it was not possible that he should be holding of it
-
now again think about this
-
it's like
-
hey in verse 24 God raised up
-
when is the resurrection
-
that's three days after the crucifixion
-
and then it says
-
having loosed the pains of death
-
so being raised up
-
loosed him from
-
the pains of death
-
now if we just slow down and think about this very carefully
-
number one
-
Christ is not dead
-
when he was on the cross
-
now he is suffering pain
-
and you could argue he's dying
-
but he's not dead
-
he hasn't experienced death
-
okay
-
so to say that this is talking about the cross
-
would number one
-
be to misunderstand the fact that he's not dead on the cross
-
and when you're dead
-
we typically understand that physically you're not experiencing pain anymore
-
from a physical perspective
-
but what is the pains of death
-
this is what the bible is describing as hell
-
because of course the dead are in hell and they're experiencing pain
-
and what loosed Christ from the pains of death
-
or the pains of hell
-
is being resurrected
-
which then matches in perfectly with the whole context is in verse 26
-
he's saying that's why you had some hope
-
and that's why in verse 27
-
because he wasn't going to be left in hell
-
and of course this is all fits together perfectly
-
that he was loosed from the pains of death
-
and he suffered
-
and that's why the bible emphasizes
-
burnt offerings so much
-
because some people would say oh well Christ went to hell
-
wouldn't the bible tell us
-
and it's like yes it tells us a lot
-
it brings it and so every time you read about the burnt sacrifice
-
you read about these burnt offerings
-
you should be realizing what Christ did for us
-
by taking our place in hell
-
experiencing the pains of death
-
the bible says by reason of affliction cry die
-
out of the belly of hell cry die
-
so it's just like he's saying it's affliction
-
in the book of Jonah
-
it's saying it's the pains of death in the book of Acts
-
I mean nowhere else in the bible is hell a pleasant place
-
nowhere is there any other escape
-
the only relief that he's claiming to have
-
is the hope of leaving
-
okay so it seems like it's just really simple
-
that Christ went to hell like the bible says
-
he was in the heart of the earth
-
it was pain it was affliction
-
he cried God hurt him and he was resurrected
-
and of course then that satisfies our punishment
-
because we would have to go to hell
-
if we got what we deserved
-
and so instead an innocent perfect spotless lamb
-
Jesus Christ went and took our place
-
not only to die but to go to hell for us
-
he became a curse on the cross
-
and the curse of the law is what
-
what is the curse of the law
-
it's death okay
-
and what's the worst part about death
-
it's not that you cease from the pain of the cross
-
it's that you then go to hell
-
for the ways of sin is death
-
it's you know what what's scary about death
-
is not not being alive
-
it's being in hell
-
because for the Christian it's not as scary
-
because we're going to go to heaven
-
and in some cases people even long for death
-
because they simply want to be in heaven
-
where there's even more rest
-
it's I mean what is heaven considered
-
rest no pain joy
-
I mean for for many elderly people
-
and even not even just elderly people
-
some people they're just suffering a lot on this earth
-
like they're just in a lot of physical pain
-
they're in just a lot of torment
-
they're not having much rest
-
and it's like they're not experiencing much joy
-
I mean Lazarus with his sores
-
he wasn't enjoying life
-
he was excited to die and go to heaven
-
okay
-
so death itself
-
what's scary about death
-
what's the punishment of death is hell itself
-
and so Christ not only experienced excruciating pain on the cross
-
and in this life
-
and the shame and the embarrassment and the woe
-
but he also experienced the pains of death itself
-
which is the scary
-
arguably in my opinion one of the scariest things
-
that you could possibly face
-
and it really is
-
and so we shouldn't undermine what Christ did
-
we should just realize
-
that Christ took our punishment in hell
-
go back if you would
-
so then what's important about this
-
is that this burnt sacrifice
-
it's offered it's offered of a voluntary will
-
picturing what that your salvation
-
is based on your voluntary will
-
of putting your faith
-
in the sacrifice of Christ
-
that we put our faith in what Jesus did
-
of our own voluntary will
-
and that's what saves us
-
it's not our works
-
it's not you know the fruit of the ground of what we did
-
it's simply offering someone in our place
-
and that person in our place
-
is an animal picture in the Old Testament of Christ
-
and so all of the animal sacrifices make sense
-
with the gospel and what Christ did
-
you know from an Islamic perspective
-
you know it's kind of crazy to me
-
or like even Jews
-
you know they have all these animal sacrifices
-
that they would give lip service to
-
and point to
-
and of course even Muslims today
-
have their halal meat
-
and they sacrifice goats
-
and lambs and animals and stuff
-
it's like well what is that picture though
-
what's the point of that
-
like why is God having you constantly
-
slaughtering animals
-
and sacrifice them
-
like why is he doing that
-
and again from a Christian perspective
-
it's because it pictures the Lamb of God
-
and how Jesus took the sin of the world
-
and how he died for our sin
-
but the Muslims don't believe that
-
and the Jews don't believe that
-
and the Jews really don't even believe
-
that's what their antichrist will even do
-
they have a kind of a warped idea
-
of their antichrist being a
-
a political leader
-
and conquering the world
-
whereas Christ came to die for the world
-
and be sacrificed for the world
-
and yet they don't understand these pictures
-
they don't understand these things
-
why
-
because they're not saved
-
if they're not saved
-
you're not going to understand
-
the wondrous things out of the law
-
you're not going to get them
-
and so you're just going to perform sacrifice
-
look the Jews
-
are wanting to perform animal sacrifices again
-
you know in Israel
-
in modern Israel today
-
they're trying to bring back the red heifer
-
they're trying to bring back different animal sacrifices
-
the Bible in the book of Daniel talks about in the end times
-
there's going to be a daily sacrifice
-
and that is going to be taken away
-
with the antichrist
-
because he's going to claim that
-
he's the real Christ
-
but even their little antichrist
-
he's not dying for the sins of the world
-
he's killed by some radical or something
-
or something's happening that's different
-
after he conquers the world
-
not him coming in a lowly form
-
as a humble servant loving people
-
you know what does the antichrist go
-
he goes out to conquer and to kill
-
like the antichrist is just killing
-
and slaughtering people in mass
-
Jesus Christ is saving people
-
and healing them from their sicknesses
-
and their diseases
-
and bringing like good things into the world
-
he's killed for feeding people
-
and raising people from the dead
-
the antichrist is different
-
because he's slaughtering everyone
-
and conquering everyone
-
and stabbing everyone in the back
-
and betraying people
-
and just like
-
he's just the man of sin
-
is what the Bible describes him as
-
and so they're complete opposites
-
completely different
-
we have to understand
-
that this levitical priesthood
-
is foreshadowing Christ
-
and again these sacrifices
-
are daily sacrifices
-
they're done like all the time
-
every single day
-
these burnt sacrifices
-
now it says in verse 4
-
and he shall put his hand up on the head
-
of the burnt offering
-
and it shall be accepted for him
-
to make atonement for him
-
so notice this gives you the atonement
-
but the Bible tells in the book of Hebrews
-
that the animal sacrifices
-
could never take away sin
-
that was never what really took away the sin
-
it says in verse 5
-
and he shall kill a bullet
-
before the Lord and the priest
-
Aaron's sons shall bring the blood
-
and sprinkle the blood
-
about upon the altar
-
that is by the door
-
of the tabernacle of the congregation
-
so one aspect of the sacrifice
-
is that blood is sprinkled
-
and it'll also talk about how it's put on the horns
-
of the altar
-
and I'm not going to necessarily go to every verse
-
for sake of time this morning
-
but it's sprinkled
-
and it's on the horns
-
and this you know is going to foreshadow
-
and picture how Jesus Christ
-
you know leading up to his crucifixion
-
he is being whipped
-
he has a crown of thorns
-
and so of course as he's going up to the cross
-
his blood is being sprinkled
-
his blood is literally
-
it's not necessarily all gushing out
-
but there's going to be sprinkles of his blood
-
going on the ground
-
going in different areas
-
of course it's just kind of
-
picturing the splattering of Christ's blood
-
that's going through all these different elements
-
and then later we're going to have
-
another element of the blood
-
but he's constantly
-
you know having his blood sprinkled
-
it says
-
and the sons of Aaron the priest shall put fire upon the altar
-
and lay the wood in order upon the fire
-
so again it's
-
this sacrifices a wood sacrifice
-
and I think that's the picture again
-
the cross he's put on wood
-
and of course that is how he's killed
-
so you have another layer there
-
it says in the priest Aaron's son shall lay the parts of the head
-
and the fat
-
in order upon the wood that is on the fire
-
which is upon the altar
-
but his inwards in his legs shall he wash in water
-
and the priest shall burn all on the altar
-
to be a burnt sacrifice
-
and offering made by fire
-
of a sweet saver unto the Lord
-
and so again
-
you kind of have different parts of the animal
-
it said in verse uh
-
I can't remember which verse it was
-
it said oh six they fillet
-
or they fillet the burnt offering
-
this this is to
-
de-skin the animal
-
so and again
-
we're not going to read all of Leviticus
-
but you could read it all if you want
-
but basically they skin the entire animal
-
and they take just kind of the
-
outward parts like the head
-
and these different parts
-
and they put them up into one section
-
then they get all the fat
-
and they gather that into a section
-
then they get all the meat portion
-
and they do different things
-
with these different parts of the animal
-
in some cases you have a whole burnt offering
-
so there's burning the entire animal
-
in other cases they're
-
they're going to burn certain parts of the animal
-
in certain places
-
okay so they're going to take the inwards
-
and they're going to burn them on the altar
-
that's right here inside the holy place
-
whereas the skin and the dung
-
and the head and all these outward parts
-
they're going to take them outside of the camp
-
and they're going to burn them outside of the camp
-
okay so you kind of have like
-
different things happening
-
all with this particular animal
-
and you know they're eating the meat
-
you know this always bothered me
-
because it's like you know
-
you read about Native Americans
-
and they eat like the whole animal
-
and it's like but in the Old Testament
-
like they're not eating all this weird stuff
-
okay and you know people are always
-
offering you these weird cuts of meat
-
and you know God bless you
-
you can do whatever you want
-
but I'm just like you know in the Old Testament
-
they're burning that stuff
-
you know what I mean
-
it's like hey here's the head
-
and this body part and this
-
and you're just like yeah
-
I'll take the brisket
-
you know like I'll take
-
I'll take the steak portion of the animal
-
you know they're they're cleaning it
-
and again they're cleaning it up too
-
you know they clean out the insides
-
and of course cleaning out the insides
-
they're washing it
-
they're not eating the blood
-
they're not eating the fat
-
and so I think number one
-
all of these things are just good things in general
-
like they're just carnal truths
-
they're the superior way
-
to clean the animal
-
to perform you know all these different things
-
associated with cooking
-
the animal
-
and so we should take some lessons from this
-
but again it pictures spiritual things as well
-
it says in verse 13
-
but he shall wash the inwards of the legs with water
-
and the priest shall bring it all
-
and burn it upon the altar
-
it is a burnt sacrifice
-
and offered me by fire
-
of a sweet Savior unto the Lord
-
and if the burnt sacrifice
-
was offering to the Lord be a fowl
-
then he shall bring his offering of turtle does
-
or young pigeons
-
and the priest shall bring it into the altar
-
and ring off his head
-
and burn it on the altar
-
and the blood there
-
shall be wrung out at the side of the altar
-
so also with the animals
-
they do the same thing
-
they ring out all the blood
-
they get all the excess blood
-
at the end of the altar
-
and they do this similarly
-
in other sections of the Bible
-
where it says that they would pour out all the blood
-
at the bottom of the altar
-
and if you would go to John chapter 19
John 19 chapter mention
-
we'll see
-
so Christ's blood is sprinkled throughout the sacrifice
-
of him walking to the cross
-
and being beaten and whipped
-
and having a crown of thorns upon his head
-
and so I think the horn is the altar
-
kind of picture of course
-
you know like the cross itself
-
you got two lifted up horns
-
and you have the blood put on there
-
and he's obviously put up on the cross
-
and you have you know
-
his hands being nailed to the cross
-
can kind of picture
-
the blood on the horns of the altar
-
you have Aaron himself being anointed
-
and they put blood on his ear
-
and on his fingers and on his toes
-
and it's like picturing
-
you know again
-
I believe Christ being on the cross
-
and you got the crown of thorns
-
and you've got it on his hands
-
he's nailed to the cross
-
but then you also have another element of the blood
-
after he's dead
-
being poured out at the altar
-
in John 19 look at verse 34
-
but one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side
-
and forth came there out blood and water
-
and he saw that it bear record
-
and his record is true
-
and he knoweth that he say it's true
-
that you might believe
-
so according to the bible like
-
these things are picturing this
-
and here's one of the scriptures that's fulfilled
-
it says for these things were done
-
that the scripture should be filled
-
a bone of him should not be broken
-
and again another scripture say
-
they shall look on him whom they pierced
-
so these animals are being slaughtered
-
and killed in all these different ways
-
so that blood can be sprinkled
-
and then all the rest of the blood
-
can just be poured out of the bottom of the altar
-
just like a picture of how Christ's blood
-
is all poured out at the bottom of the cross
-
so all these things while they seem arbitrary
-
weird random they're picturing different elements
-
of what's going to happen with Jesus Christ
-
and of course these offerings being in different places
-
are going to be also picturing that as well
-
go if you went to chapter two of Leviticus
-
you know obviously most of the time
-
the bible is is making it clear too
-
that they're supposed to be
-
males without blemish
-
sometimes they use females
-
but it's always supposed to be
-
an animal sacrifice without blemish
-
without any problem
-
and that's a picture of the sinlessness of Christ
-
that he was in all points tempted
-
like as we are yet without sin
-
the bible says in chapter two
-
this is a meat offering
-
so this is a little bit different
-
and again what's confusing to me
-
is like almost all of these offerings
-
are meat in our sense of like carnal flesh
-
whereas typically when the bible is saying
-
a meat offering here
-
it's talking about bread
-
it's talking about like the wheat
-
so it seems backwards a little bit
-
but that's just because meat in the bible
-
a lot of times in the Old Testament
-
it's just referring to just food in general
-
and again the meat here is talking about
-
flour and bread
-
says in verse one
-
and when any will offer a meat offering
-
under the Lord
-
his offering shall be a fine flour
-
and he shall pour oil upon it
-
and put frankincense there on
-
and he shall bring it to Aaron's sons
-
the priest
-
and he shall take there of his handful
-
of the flour thereof
-
and of the oil thereof
-
with all the frankincense thereof
-
and the priest shall burn the memorial of it
-
upon the altar
-
to be an offering made by fire
-
of a sweet savor under the Lord
-
and the remnant of the meat offering
-
shall be Aaron and his sons
-
it is the thing most holy of the offerings
-
of the Lord made by fire
-
so they take flour, oil, frankincense
-
and they burn this to God
-
but then a portion of it
-
is given to the priest
-
and they consume it
-
it says specifically in verse number five
-
and if they'll bring an oblation of meat offering
-
baking in the oven
-
it shall be unleavened cakes
-
of fine flour, mingle with oil
-
or unleavened wafers anointed with oil
-
so it has to be unleavened
-
again this is picturing that Christ himself
-
is sinless again
-
the leaven is a picture of sin
-
that's mentioned in first Corinthians chapter number five
-
a little leaven leavened at the whole lump
-
and it was foreshadowing sin in the church
-
and the leaven is picturing the fact that Christ
-
is sinless because he's unleavened
-
and so these are unleavened cakes or wafers
-
it's like you kind of have
-
either an unleavened pancake
-
or an unleavened cracker wafer
-
type of a bread that they're eating
-
so different styles and different methods
-
of creating a meal here
-
and notice God's giving them a little bit of liberty here
-
they can make it into a cake style meal
-
they can make it into a wafer style meal
-
but then they are to eat it
-
so this is what they're constantly eating
-
they're eating with oil
-
so again oil is often a picture of the Holy Ghost
-
and so of course Christ is this unleavened wafer
-
he's this unleavened cake
-
he's filled with the Holy Ghost
-
and then you have this frankincense
-
which frankincense you know
-
I'm not going to be like super dogmatic about this
-
because I think there's a lot of things this could picture
-
obviously in general frankincense is a perfume
-
it's a smell it's an odor
-
so in one sense it's typically there
-
just to show that God's pleased with the offering
-
that is a sweet saver that God is satisfied with
-
I think another element is
-
that in the Gospels
-
there's the women they go out and buy spices
-
and they anoint the body of Christ
-
so it's for his body
-
and again what we're dealing with in this meat offering
-
is really talking about the physical aspects of Christ
-
we're talking about his physical body
-
he had no sin
-
he's filled with the Holy Ghost
-
but also his body saw no corruption
-
and if you think about this Lazarus
-
after four days the Bible says he stinketh
-
if you kind of remember
-
whereas the women go
-
and they anoint the body of Christ
-
and in fact he's anointed many times throughout the Gospels
-
with perfumes
-
with ointments
-
and it's to prepare for his burial
-
and again the emphasis is that
-
when Christ comes out and he resurrects
-
that his body saw no corruption
-
and so I believe it's
-
the frankincense is kind of showing like hey
-
this smells good
-
as opposed to smelling bad
-
and so Christ when he resurrects
-
he has a sweet saver
-
a sweet smell
-
not a rotten smell
-
not a decomposing smell
-
because decomposing flesh
-
is one of the most disgusting things you could ever smell
-
and so it's kind of like just
-
picturing how Christ's body was going to be preserved
-
and it's not only going to be preserved
-
but it's going to be a sweet saver
-
and it's going to be a sweet smell
-
and again that's because it's foreshadowing the
-
the resurrection itself
-
that Christ is going to resurrect
-
and there's nothing negative about the resurrection
-
he has a glorified body
-
it's of a sweet saver
-
it's of a sweet smell
-
because there's nothing worse than smelling
-
something bad
-
or smelling something rotten
-
and you know that's why you take a shower
-
okay
-
and and there's nothing wrong with perfume
-
or there's nothing wrong with some kind of a fragrance
-
that makes you smell you know pleasant
-
now don't be too heavy-handed there
-
okay I'm not saying like
-
you know
-
we don't want to smell you from feet away
-
okay
-
but it's like you know
-
some people use a slight fragrance or whatever
-
and it smells good
-
you know you walk in the perfume store and you want to gag
-
because it's just overwhelming
-
and we get that
-
but it's just like
-
you know in general
-
there's a good fragrance
-
there's a bad fragrance
-
and isn't it interesting that like
-
good religion
-
is concerned with smelling good
-
and false religion
-
smells horrible
-
have you ever noticed that
-
I'm just
-
I'm just gonna say it okay
-
I've noticed that false religion
-
and bad religion
-
usually smells bad
-
okay
-
their culture
-
there's their temples
-
their seeks or whatever
-
I mean all of it just smells bad
-
you know even the orthodox
-
they do these weird things
-
like some orthodox
-
they'll take a rotten foot
-
and they'll mix it in water
-
they'll like stir water with a rotten foot
-
and make people drink it
-
I've seen Hindus
-
they're drinking like foot water
-
you know if you read the
-
in the Old Testament
-
there's gonna be a portion in the Bible
-
where it talks about the false prophets
-
fouling water with their feet
-
and then making people drink it
-
wow
-
and it's just interesting how like
-
false religion
-
has like a physical uncleanness to it
-
and true biblical Christianity
-
is trying to be clean
-
and it's trying to have
-
good smells
-
and good fragrances
-
you know it's like you go to a
-
Texas brisket restaurant
-
and it just smells good
-
you smell all the meat being cooked
-
and everything
-
and it's just like
-
I mean you know think about it
-
where God is at
-
it just always smells good
-
I mean you smell someone
-
charcoaling and barbecuing
-
and it just smells good
-
you know in my neighborhood
-
they smell someone's cooking burger
-
or someone's cooking steak
-
or something
-
it smells good
-
and you're just kind
-
you're kind of like I want that
-
you know
-
whereas it's like some places
-
some cultures
-
some cuisines
-
you're like I don't want to smell your food
-
I don't want to smell your cooking
-
I don't want to smell
-
your rotting meat
-
or your rotting flesh
-
or the weird stuff that you're doing
-
and you know typically
-
your taste is associated with
-
their smell anyways
-
like God gave you a nose
-
to smell something
-
and say oh I shouldn't put this in my mouth
-
because it smells bad
-
like that's supposed to be
-
why you have that
-
you know reprobates don't know this
-
and so they'll eat disgusting things
-
they're on fear factor
-
eating stuff your nose is telling you no
-
why is it that when you have to eat
-
something you don't like
-
isn't it hold your nose
-
it's like you have medicines
-
hold your nose
-
it's like why would I just ignore
-
every God given instinct
-
every God given intuition
-
everything that God's given me of like
-
hey this food smells rotten
-
and it looks rotten
-
and it's like eat it
-
it's just like well
-
maybe I should just eat stuff
-
that smells good
-
and looks good
-
you know God gave me eyes
-
and a nose for a reason
-
and I'm going to use it
-
okay
-
and of course
-
I believe that all these things
-
are foreshadowing again
-
the gospel that the gospel
-
is a pleasant thing overall
-
obviously that cross
-
and the crucifixion or not
-
but the specific elements
-
of the resurrection
-
and he's coming out of the grave
-
and it's a sweet saver
-
I mean it would be kind of
-
spoiling the gospel
-
if Christ came up
-
you know resurrect from the dead
-
and they're like oh wow we can tell
-
you know from the smell
-
or something like that
-
no it was a pleasant smell
-
it's a good smell
-
on the walk to Emmaus
-
no one's like
-
you kind of smell like
-
you've been in a grave
-
for three days
-
you know so it's just like
-
hey they were preserving the body
-
and so I think again
-
that's where the frankincense
-
being put in this offering
-
this meat offering
-
that God wanted
-
them to enjoy the smell
-
of these offerings
-
and so it
-
it smells like a good kitchen
-
you know where God
-
is having them perform
-
all these sacrifices
-
and they have the oil there
-
they're doing a frying pan
-
they can cook it in an oven
-
frying pan pan
-
they got all kinds of different cooking
-
instruments that they're using here
-
but they're using fire
-
of course for every one of these sacrifices
-
I want to look at verse 11
-
no meat offering
-
which you shall bring to the Lord
-
shall be made with leaven
-
for you shall burn no leaven
-
nor any honey
-
and any offering of the Lord
-
made by fire
-
so two elements could not exist though
-
honey and leaven
-
so again the leaven is a picture of sin
-
and while I believe the frankincense
-
is a picture of the resurrection
-
and why that's a sweet saver
-
I believe the honey
-
is not put in here
-
because of what the bible says
-
about taking no pleasure
-
in the crucifixion element
-
okay so let's go to Isaiah
Isaiah 53 chapter mention
-
chapter 53 for a moment
-
let's go to Isaiah chapter 53
Isaiah 53 chapter mention
-
because again honey
-
is is sweet
-
and it's enjoyable
-
it's pleasant
-
honey could picture a lot of different things
-
you know I think also honey could just
-
picture the carnal pleasures of this life
-
and and again this is not
-
you know the gospel is not about
-
your best life now
-
and the carnal pleasures of this life
-
you know there's nothing wrong
-
with carnal pleasures
-
but this is not the gospel message
-
you know Christ didn't die on the cross
-
so you could have a sweet life
-
he didn't he didn't do that
-
to just have like all of this joy
-
and money and and whatever
-
you know from the carnal pleasures of life
-
like oh now I get to enjoy
-
the cowboys more or something
-
and like you know I love I don't mind
-
football like I'm not like
-
I want to be careful
-
I'm not hating football
-
I'm not even saying football is bad
-
but what I don't like
-
is how so many pastors
-
india of w will preach with a cowboys jersey on
-
and I mean I saw it recently this week
-
I saw like a pastor of a church
-
she's just got a cowboys jersey on
-
and I remember our our pastor growing up
-
would always say like if he said
-
if the cowboys make it to the super bowl
-
he was going to dress in a full
-
cowboys uniform
-
for the sermon on Sunday
-
and I'm just thinking like why
-
like should we have NASCAR church too
-
like what if I'm just like
-
hey if Jeff Gordon is going to win
-
you know I'll dress up like Jeff Gordon
-
or something you know it's just like
-
like why or you know like pickleball
-
or something you know it's like what
-
like why why the cowboys
-
and it's like you know that's that's
-
wrong to mix that with church
-
okay I'm not
-
if you want to go watch a cowboys game
-
or if you want to go play a sport
-
or you want to watch people
-
driving a circle and call it fun
-
you can do that all you want
-
but it's like that's just that's just
-
not church
-
okay I mean it's not about Christ
-
it's not about the gospel
-
and so we shouldn't be mixing the honey
-
in with his other stuff
-
and I believe you know when it talks
-
about Christ look at what it says in
-
verse 1 of Isaiah 53
-
who have believed our port
-
and to whom is the arm of the Lord revealed
-
for he shall grow up before him
-
as a tender plant and as a root
-
out of a dry ground
-
he have no form nor comeliness
-
and we when we shall see him
-
there is no beauty
-
that we should desire him
-
he is despised and rejected
-
of men and man of sorrows
-
and acquainted with grief
-
and we hid as it were our faces rim
-
he was despised and we esteemed him not
-
so I believe what the Bible is trying
-
to indicate here in Isaiah 53
-
is the is the crucifixion
-
this is the crucifixion
-
and it's just saying like
-
when Christ was on the cross
-
you didn't enjoy that
-
there was nothing enjoyable about the cross
-
it's to picture the ugliness
-
of our sin and the ugliness
-
of what Christ is doing for us
-
you know some people twisted this
-
and I think it's blasphemous to say
-
that Christ was not
-
he was like an ugly man or something
-
or he looked he looked very rejected
-
from a carnal perspective
-
well that undermines what the Bible
-
teaches because the Bible teaches
-
that the lambs are supposed to be
-
like a perfect spotless lamb
-
so it's supposed to be the most
-
attractive looking lamb sacrifice
-
not something that has blemishes
-
not something that it has
-
and in fact the Bible is really explicit
-
that you know
-
if you got a humpback
-
you got a crooked nose
-
you know whatever
-
you couldn't even perform the sacrifice
-
of the Lord
-
you know picturing that Christ had to have been
-
you know a spotless perfect lamb
-
without blemish
-
okay he wasn't
-
there wasn't something messed up about him
-
but obviously on the cross
-
with a crown of thorns shoved on his head
-
and being beaten and bloodied
-
and bruised and not having eaten
-
like it was an ugly picture
-
because it's ugly for someone
-
to get beaten up
-
it's ugly for someone to be
-
you know hurt and in all these ways
-
and so there was no beauty
-
that they desired of him on the cross
-
because why?
-
because he was despised
-
because he was rejected of men
-
because he's been stripped and naked
-
and shamed and beaten and whipped
-
and there's a crown of thorns
-
I mean it's just it's an ugly mess
-
it's an ugly mess
-
but that's not to say
-
that Christ himself was an unattractive person
-
or something
-
that's a bad way to read the text
-
okay
-
so we go back to Leviticus
-
and it's saying no honey
-
I believe it's just picturing
-
this this element of the cross
-
that there was no nothing pleasant
-
about the cross
-
okay so there's no honey mixed in
-
because there's nothing
-
and again it's an unleavened cake
-
it's an unleavened wafer
-
again leaven and honey
-
is really where you kind of
-
you dial in the pleasure out elements
-
you know it's like the fluffy pancake
-
the fluffy pancake makes it kind of special
-
you know
-
in fact there's a restaurant in
-
Oklahoma City
-
that we would eat at
-
as a breakfast place
-
and they have the thickest pancakes
-
like I've ever had
-
and they were delicious
-
and I don't even like pancakes
-
like I'm not a pancake person
-
but these pancakes were exceptional
-
and it was the
-
you know they definitely used leaven
-
okay
-
there was no question of whether
-
they were using leaven
-
and of course they're also using
-
sugar or something you know
-
similar to what honey is bringing
-
into the recipe
-
is bringing in
-
you know that pleasant aspect
-
but again with
-
Christ on the cross
-
it's an unpleasant picture
-
it's a sinless
-
filled with the Holy Spirit
-
Christ
-
that is being beaten and bloodied
-
and bruised
-
and blood's being sprinkled
-
and spattered
-
and again
-
you know in some senses
-
there's a kind of an ugly process
-
you know
-
slaughtering animals
-
and blood being everywhere
-
that's not really that enjoyable either
-
and it's just to illustrate
-
a lot of these
-
elements with
-
with Christ
-
look at verse 13 now
-
it says
-
in every oblation of thy meat offering
-
shout thou season with salt
-
neither shout though suffer
-
the salt of the covenant thy God to be lacking
-
from thy meat offering
-
with all thine offerings
-
thou shalt offer salt
-
so every meat offering has salt on it
-
now salt
-
currently speaking it preserves meat
-
it'll help it last longer
-
and in fact many meats
-
are salted heavily
-
so they just have a very long shelf life
-
you look at deli meats
-
you look at like things like pepperoni
-
and salami
-
they've been
-
they've been salinated in a way
-
to where they can be preserved
-
for a very long time
-
a beef jerky
-
salt is helping in this preservation element
-
so if you think about it
-
it's something that should
-
dye rot and decompose
-
salt's keeping it
-
from dying
-
rotting and decomposing
-
and so its shelf life
-
has been extended
-
so i would i would argue
-
this is a picture of grace
-
because the meat should have expired
-
but it's not expiring when it should
-
so it's getting a grace period
-
and so in a lot of ways salt
-
pictures grace itself
-
and so every meat
-
is pictured with grace
-
and of course we're saved by grace
-
we don't get what we deserve
-
you know and of course
-
every sacrifice has to have the salt
-
because every sacrifice is a picture of grace
-
because there's nothing about the gospel
-
and there's nothing about christ
-
that isn't with grace
-
it's all about the grace
-
and how we're saved by grace
-
we're saved by salt in a sense
-
if the salt loses it's saver
-
it's good for nothing
-
and of course salt
-
you know without any grace
-
is just kind of meaningless
-
and that would mean what?
-
any salvation that's not by grace
-
is meaningless
-
any sacrifice without grace
-
is meaningless
-
okay
-
it's the grace that's the needed element
-
and you could even
-
you could even take another element
-
beyond just the gospel
-
it's just like christians without grace
-
are kind of meaningless too
-
because the bible says
-
if you don't have charity
-
then you're nothing
-
you know
-
if you're doing things without charity
-
then it's just kind of meaningless
-
and so we need to have grace
-
and of course we can
-
take that element into
-
you know our daily lives
-
not just the gospel
-
and getting saved
-
in chapter 3
-
look at verse 16
-
i'm just going to kind of
-
skip around just a few more verses
-
that i think are interesting
-
but it says in verse 16
-
the priest shall burn
-
and upon the altar
-
it is the food of the offering
-
made by fire for a sweet saver
-
all the fat
-
is the Lord
-
so all the fat was supposed to be burned
-
now again
-
i think that this is uh
-
it's not so much like overly literal
-
like obviously in a
-
a ribeye
-
or some portions of meat
-
there's this like tiny little bits of fat
-
that are wedged in there
-
this is talking about the big portions of fat
-
and it very clearly articulates these
-
okay
-
so you're just taking all the main sections of fat
-
and you're taking them all out
-
of the offering
-
system
-
and it's all the lords
-
and again i believe the fat is a picture of sin
-
okay it's a picture of sin
-
and how
-
all the fat is burnt
-
and all the fat is consumed
-
because christ's really satisfied
-
all of our sin
-
the bible says
-
the blood of jesus christ cleansed us from all sin
-
and so just all the fat
-
all that excess
-
is completely burned
-
is completely given to the lord
-
and it's completely satisfied
-
by god
-
whereas you see the false prophets
-
people like elie suns
-
they love to eat the fat
-
and it's just kind of a picture of how they don't want
-
you know the actual satisfaction for their sins
-
or the
-
the atonement for their sins
-
and they just
-
indulge in sin
-
and they
-
allow themselves to become excess
-
because of the fat
-
look at chapter number
-
ten
-
four verse ten
-
it says
-
and as it was taken off of the bullet
-
of the sacrifice of peace offerings
-
the priest shall burn them
-
upon the altar of the burn offering
-
and the skin of the bullet
-
and all his flesh hit his head
-
and with his legs
-
and his inwards and his dung
-
even the whole bullet
-
shall he carry forth without the camp
-
under clean place
-
where the ash is poured out
-
and burn them
-
on the wood of the
-
with the fire
-
so
-
it
-
and I'm not again
-
I'm not reading everything here
-
so you kind of have to just
-
roll with me
-
but
-
all the inwards were burnt at the altar
-
all the outward portion
-
was then taken outside the camp
-
and it was burned separately
-
so go to Hebrews chapter 13
Hebrews 13 chapter mention
-
if you would go to Hebrews chapter 13
Hebrews 13 chapter mention
-
this is the picture
-
two two elements of the burning
-
now
-
why is it the inwards burnt
-
in that altar there
-
because I believe that's the picture of hell
-
and again
-
what went to hell
-
Christ's body didn't go to hell
-
his soul went to hell
-
okay
-
picturing the inward part
-
but the outward part
-
was taken without the camp
-
and this is told explicitly
-
in the book of Hebrews
-
that this is picturing the cross
-
so in Hebrews chapter 13 verse 10
-
it says we have an altar
-
where they have no right to eat
-
which serve the tabernacle
-
for the bodies of those beasts
-
whose blood is brought into the sanctuary
-
by the high priest for sin
-
are burned without the camp
-
wherefore Jesus also
-
that he might sanctify the people
-
with his own blood
-
suffered without the gate
-
let us go forth therefore
-
unto him without the camp
-
bearing his approach
-
so it kind of says like
-
oh just like they would take the skin
-
and the head
-
and they took that
-
and they put that
-
and did it without the camp
-
but the inwards were burned
-
there at the altar
-
so again
-
his soul went to hell
-
but outwardly
-
he went to the cross
-
he was outside the city
-
they took him without
-
and they put him on the cross
-
and that's where his skin
-
and his head
-
and whatever were suffering
-
because let me tell you something
-
when you're getting whipped
-
and you're getting a crowd of thorns
-
and you're getting nails pierced
-
you know what's hurting
-
your skin
-
and it's hurting your head
-
you know it's hurting
-
the outward parts of the body
-
but the inward parts
-
the soul
-
that's where the fire from hell
-
is actually the pains of death
-
okay so that's why it's two separate things
-
like you kind of wonder like
-
why not just burn it all right there
-
couldn't they have just done that
-
why go through all the hassle
-
and all the effort
-
of burning the inside here
-
then taking the outside out
-
and the burning
-
because it's picturing different elements
-
of the sacrifice of Christ
-
not only did he go without the camp
-
not only did he get crucified
-
not only is his skin his body
-
and his physical
-
you know pain that he suffered
-
he also has the inward suffering
-
of hell and the burning
-
that was there as well
-
so inward burn on the altar
-
outward burn outside the camp
-
and then it's foreshadowed here
-
go to chapter 5 look at verse 15
-
chapter 5 verse 15
-
and I know this morning I'm not
-
you know getting up and screaming
-
and yelling about how wicked
-
and feminist our world is but
-
you know hopefully you like the bible
-
okay come tonight
-
all right that's all I'd say
-
but it says in chapter 5 verse 15
-
if a soul committed trespass
-
a sin through ignorance
-
in the holy things of the Lord
-
then he shall bring for his trespass
-
and the Lord it ran without blemish
-
under the flocks
-
or out of the flocks
-
with thy estimation
-
by shekels of silver
-
after the shekel of the sanctuary
-
for a trespass offering
-
and he shall make amends
-
for the harm that he had done
-
in the holy thing
-
and shall add the fifth part there to
-
and give it under the priest
-
and the priest shall make an atonement
-
for him
-
with the ram of the trespass offering
-
and it shall be forgiven him
-
so chapter 1 we dealt with the burnt offering
-
chapter 2 is a meat offering
-
chapter 3 is a peace offering
-
chapter 4 is dealing
-
and chapter 5 are kind of dealing
-
with trespass offerings
-
and ignorance offerings
-
and sin offerings
-
and it's saying if someone did some
-
ignorant offering
-
like an ignorant sin I'm sorry
-
they sin through ignorance
-
or this trespass through ignorance
-
then not only do they have to give the animal sacrifice
-
they have to give a fifth portion
-
of shekels of money to the priest
-
and notice it said in verse 15
-
with thy estimation
-
by shekels of the silver
-
after the shekel of the sanctuary
-
so they figure out
-
hey I sinned
-
and they realize they sinned
-
then they bring the animal
-
when they bring the animal
-
they have to then figure out
-
how much does this animal cost
-
and so I don't know the numbers
-
doesn't matter
-
let's just say it was a thousand shekels or whatever
-
they would say okay this animal is a thousand shekels
-
and then they would say okay
-
then I have to give a fifth of that
-
in money also
-
so if it was a thousand
-
you're giving a fifth that's 20%
-
so I'm trying to use easy numbers
-
that would be what 200 shekels
-
okay so they have to give 200 shekels with it
-
but they're figuring out the price of this animal
-
to end up giving this
-
look at chapter six
-
and let's read some more about this
-
it says in the Lord's bacon of Moses saying
-
if a soul sin and commit a trespass against the Lord
-
and lie unto his neighbor
-
and that which was delivered him to keep
-
or in fellowship
-
or in a thing taken away by violence
-
or at deceived his neighbor
-
or have found that which was lost
-
and lieth concerning it
-
and sweareth falsely
-
and any of all these
-
that a man doeth sinning therein
-
then it shall be because he has sinned and is guilty
-
that he's restored that which he took violently away
-
or the thing which he hath deceitfully gotten
-
or that which was delivered him to keep
-
or the lost thing which he found
-
or all that about which he hath sworn falsely
-
he shall even restore it in the principle
-
and shall add the fifth part more there to
-
and give it unto him
-
to whom it appertaineth
-
in the day of his trespass offering
-
and he shall bring his trespass offering unto the Lord
-
and ram without blemish out of the flock
-
with by estimation for a trespass offering
-
notice this
-
unto the priest
-
so what's interesting about this
-
is you have a situation
-
where you not only give the animal sacrifice
-
you have this shekels of silver being given to him
-
and the first portion is he didn't do it
-
he didn't understand it was a sin through ignorance
-
okay he whisked it not
-
as the bible says in verse 17
-
he whisked it not meaning he didn't know
-
he was guilty but he didn't understand it
-
and I believe this is foreshadowing Judas Iscariot
-
okay because Judas Iscariot
-
he goes in covenants with the priest
-
and is given 30 shekels of silver
-
to betray the Lord Jesus Christ okay
-
but then later when he after the after the crucifixion
-
Judas ends up coming to himself and realizing
-
he's betrayed innocent blood
-
so in a sense you can see like oh he didn't realize
-
what he was even doing exactly
-
and he comes and he gives that money back to the priests
-
and so in the same sense it's like this guy
-
sins through ignorance
-
and then he gives this shekels of money to the priest
-
that they estimated the value of this animal
-
and again they ask that they give a price of Christ
-
of course it's 30 shekels in the New Testament
-
is what we understand
-
and it's just kind of an interesting foreshadowing
-
but think about what Judas did
-
and then it's interesting when you read
-
chapter six again
-
because it's interesting thinking about like
-
what it's saying would be the reason
-
why you would have to give money
-
and then it's like what did Judas do
-
because it says here in verse number two
-
if a soul sin had committed trespasses against the Lord
-
and lie unto his neighbor
-
oh that's what Judas did
-
he lied unto Jesus didn't he
-
in that which he was delivered him to keep
-
he was supposed to keep the Lord Jesus Christ safe
-
but he lies and he delivers them onto the Romans
-
or in fellowship
-
I mean he comes and betrays him with a kiss
-
he's lying to him
-
he's deceiving him in a fellowship
-
if you keep reading it says
-
or in a thing taken away by violence
-
oh you mean like the Roman soldiers coming with swords
-
to take away the Lord Jesus Christ
-
and then it says or at the seed his neighbor
-
again the betrayal of the kiss by Judas Iscariot
-
or have found that which was lost and lieth concerning it
-
and swear it falsely
-
of course it's like Christ is kind of coming
-
and it's like a secret
-
the gospel has been lost
-
and then Judas of course is like lying about this
-
it's like it's interesting how all these people
-
that are guilty
-
are just like Judas Iscariot
-
and that's the specific sacrifice
-
that you have to add money
-
you have to add the sequels of the sanctuary
-
and of course then that money goes to the priest
-
in the same way
-
the money of Judas went back to the priest
-
and then they bought Potiphar's field
-
with that money
-
and so it's just kind of interesting how a lot of these
-
you know sacrifices
-
are kind of picturing elements
-
of the gospel message
-
look at
-
verse 12
-
it says in the fire upon the altar shall be burning in it
-
it shall not be put out
-
and the priest shall burn wood on it every morning
-
and lay burnt offering in order upon it
-
and he shall burn thereof
-
there on the fat of the peace offering
-
so verse 13 the fire shall ever be burning
-
upon the altar and it shall never go out
-
this picture is again hell is forever
-
hell will never cease
-
so there's an eternal nature
-
there was a sacrifice though every morning
-
so you could you could see how
-
hell is forever
-
but Christ sacrifices forever
-
and it covers that
-
and so will never taste of death
-
in verse 16
-
it says in the rainder there shall Aaron
-
and his sons eat with unleavened bread
-
shall it be eaten in the holy place
-
in the court of the tabernacle
-
of the congregation
-
they shall eat it
-
so they're eating this flour
-
they're eating this bread meal
-
and it's really specific in these chapters
-
when it's talking about eating
-
it's usually talking about the bread
-
the wafer or the cake
-
so they're eating this
-
and it's a sweet saver
-
it's a memorial
-
so to satisfy you going to hell
-
you eat the wafer in a sense
-
and what is that foreshadowing
-
that's picturing how
-
we believe on the Lord Jesus Christ
-
and his death burn resurrection
-
and that satisfies us
-
from going to hell
-
this is brought up in John chapter 6
John 6 chapter mention
-
Jesus Christ said that you had to eat
-
his flesh
-
so that you could have life in you
-
you eat food to have life
-
you eat food to survive
-
to be sustained another day
-
and in the same way
-
we believe on the Lord Jesus Christ
-
and that gives us eternal life
-
it's a bread that you don't have to eat every day
-
but in the same sense
-
you have to eat it for life
-
and we do this
-
we believe
-
and that's what gives us salvation
-
but notice in verse 17
-
it shall not be bacon with leaven
-
I have given unto them for
-
their portion of my offerings made by fire
-
it is most holy as the sin offering
-
and as the trespass offering
-
it cannot have leaven
-
picturing what salvation
-
is not faith and works
-
it is faith alone
-
and why is it not works
-
by leaven here
-
because any offering that we have of ourselves
-
is coming leavened
-
because we are sinful
-
we have fallen short
-
so therefore our works cannot save us
-
and we can't mix in
-
what Christ did
-
His wafer
-
with our wafer
-
because our wafer is leavened
-
and he doesn't accept
-
any offering with leaven in it
-
so guess what
-
your offering is not accepted
-
Cain's offering is not accepted
-
any offering
-
that is tainted with leaven
-
is not accepted of God
-
that's why it has to be an unleavened wafer
-
which is only Christ
-
you know I like this verse
-
and I use it a lot in my soul
-
and now I'll go over to Romans chapter 5
Romans 5 chapter mention
-
and I think this is an important point
-
but you know in Romans chapter number 5
-
I'm trying to help people understand
-
the two elements
-
that salvation is a free gift
-
but also that you know
-
it was we illustrate typically
-
in the first point of our gospel presentation
-
that you know there's none righteous
-
no not one
-
okay
-
but then the bible brings up
-
that there is one righteous
-
again verse 18
-
and I'm just starting in the middle of the verse
-
even so by the righteousness of one
-
the free gift
-
came upon all men in justification of life
-
I usually in my gospel presentation
-
I'll just read that portion
-
and I'll say this
-
who was the only one that was righteous
-
and pretty much without fail
-
they'll say it was Jesus
-
it's by the righteousness of one
-
that the free gift
-
came upon all men in justification of life
-
we can't screw that up
-
we can't misunderstand that
-
because clearly there's only one that was righteous
-
and it's a free gift
-
and it comes to everyone
-
so everyone is offered to be saved
-
by the free gift
-
of what Christ did
-
and his righteousness
-
our offering with leaven is not accepted by God
-
we can't
-
it's not us and him
-
it's the righteousness of one
-
there's one wafer
-
there's one cracker
-
there's one thing
-
that you metaphorically eat
-
it's believing on the Lord Jesus Christ
-
and that gives us
-
our salvation
-
and if you go back
-
look at verse 18 now
-
so in verse 16 they eat the wafer
-
17 it's not with leaven
-
18 notice this
-
and all the males among the children of error
-
and shall eat of it
-
it shall be a statue forever
-
in generations turning the offerings
-
of the Lord made by fire
-
everyone that touches them
-
shall be holy
-
so notice when you do this
-
you become holy
-
and that's a picture of the imputed righteousness
-
of the Lord Jesus Christ
-
that comes on to you
-
when you believe on him
-
when you don't accept the sacrifice of leaven
-
when you're just trusting him alone
-
that's what makes you holy
-
just simply touching it
-
and it made me think of a story in the gospel
-
go through to Matthew chapter number nine
-
go to Matthew chapter nine
-
this is going to tie everything to what I'm saying together
-
to where it's clear of what I'm saying
-
oh well you're just
-
you're just saying that eating the cracker is just faith alone
-
or you're just saying doing these things is faith alone
-
or faith is what's the the the spiritual element
-
and that's what the bible says okay
-
let me show you
-
Matthew chapter nine
-
look at verse number 20
-
and behold a woman which was
-
with an issue of blood 12 years came behind him
-
and touched the hem of his garment
-
so just like they touched this
-
and they became holy
-
she comes and touches Jesus
-
verse 21 for she said within herself
-
if I'm able to touch his garment
-
I shall be whole
-
so she's made whole by touching the garment
-
but Jesus turned him about
-
and when he saw her
-
he said daughter be of good comfort
-
thy faith hath made the whole
-
and the woman was made whole from that hour
-
so notice
-
it wasn't just touching Jesus
-
or touching bread or doing it
-
it's not these carnal things that saves you
-
it was the faith that saved them
-
that's what it means to eat the cracker
-
that's what it means when the Jesus is saying
-
in John chapter number six to eat his flesh
-
that's what it means when it's talking about
-
touching the garment
-
or touching the bread
-
and being made holy
-
it's putting your faith in Jesus Christ
-
and that makes you whole
-
that makes you righteous
-
that makes you right with God
-
that gives you the atonement
-
that's what causes you go to heaven
-
it's not anything you did physically
-
it's your faith that saves you
-
and it couldn't be clear
-
I want to go to a couple more verses in chapter six
-
which will be done for this morning
-
but you know I hope that maybe
-
when you're reading the Old Testament
-
you won't be discouraged on in Leviticus
-
you'll think like hey I want to behold
-
wondrous things out of thy law
-
because there's something
-
you know for the person that's not saved
-
it's going to be a really boring session
-
okay
-
I'm going to be like man
-
just killing animals again
-
and dung and heads and crackers and whatever
-
but you know what for us that are saved
-
there's a whole another layer
-
that's really exciting and really enjoyable
-
and it's wonderful that we get to read through it
-
now again there's nothing wrong with the law
-
and I'm not saying that
-
you can't enjoy it even carnally
-
but let's just be honest this is a little dry
-
but for those of us that are saved
-
it comes alive
-
and and of course
-
you know that's kind of just that
-
their communion is is dead
-
and dry
-
ours is alive because there's meaning
-
you know we're not we're not drinking booze
-
okay like the Catholics
-
we're not going to go
-
have service every Sunday morning and drink booze
-
how is how is that making you go to heaven
-
like if you're Catholic you have
-
you believe you have to perform the Eucharist to go to heaven
-
you believe a cracker and alcohol
-
are going to get you into heaven
-
it's no it's faith that saves you
-
and it's faith in Christ's sacrifice
-
and what he did for us that saves us
-
so in chapter six it says in verse 23
-
for every meat offering for the priest shall be holy burnt
-
it shall not be eaten
-
so you know again
-
a lot of these the sacrifices were holy burnt
-
and I believe that's to show that
-
Christ died for the full offering for sin
-
you know some secularist and weird people
-
will say that Christ didn't really die
-
you know he really died
-
and that's the picture that the whole burnt offering
-
and so he took the whole picture for us
-
verse 28
-
but the earthen vessel wearing it was
-
sawed in shall be broken
-
and if it be sawed in a brazen pot
-
it shall be scoured and rinsed in water
-
now this is kind of interesting but
-
you could cook some of these things in different vessels
-
an earthen vessel would be like a clay type of a pot
-
like a dust pot or something
-
and a brazen pot is obviously a metal type pot
-
and again from a cleanliness perspective
-
you know if you're cooking in clay
-
and the and the dirt and the dust
-
like disease bacteria and stuff
-
can get into that actual pot
-
and it become contaminated
-
and it's not clean anymore
-
so after you cooked in something like that
-
you just break it
-
okay the brazen pot can be rinsed
-
and scoured scoured just like scrubbing
-
so they're just scrubbing it clean
-
they're wiping it down
-
and I believe that this is picturing
-
again Christ
-
he from an earthly perspective
-
his earthly vessel was destroyed
-
you know the bible says
-
that when he breaks the cracker
-
he says that his body was broken
-
and it was broken for us
-
so Jesus Christ
-
so the earthen vessel was broken
-
but then he rose again
-
and of course you know you kind of picture
-
you know brazen things can abide by the fire
-
they were cooked in fire
-
and they're rinsed
-
and now they can be used again
-
and I believe that's a picture of the resurrected body
-
so the resurrection
-
hey he abides by the fire
-
and it's not going to be broken
-
it's going to be reused
-
and it'll be used forever
-
and it's been cleansed
-
and so you know it can continue being used
-
of course you have pictures of Christ himself
-
even his feet
-
are like brazen feet
-
that were abiding in the fire
-
and so you kind of have these pictures
-
look at verse 30 in nosen offering
-
where of any of the blood
-
is brought into the tabernacle of congregation
-
to reconcile with all in the holy place
-
shall be eaten
-
it shall be burnt in the fire
-
so all the blood
-
is discarded in the sense
-
so all the blood is emptied
-
and I guess my last point would be this is that
-
you know it seems like
-
because the Bible says without the shedding of blood
-
there is no remission of sins
-
so all the blood of Christ was shed for us
-
okay
-
and it appears
-
and again this is just my understanding of Scripture
-
but when Christ reappears
-
and he's showing himself to them
-
he says like flesh and blood
-
cannot enter the kingdom of God
-
and he says he has like flesh and bone
-
but not blood
-
and it appears that our first experience
-
our first life is powered by blood
-
but our second is powered by the Spirit
-
and so you know eating of blood
-
is kind of a picture of trying to live forever
-
in this old body carnally
-
and you know this is what a lot of people want to do
-
a lot of people are trying to just live forever
-
in this body with blood
-
you'll notice the satanic the occultists
-
they're obsessed with blood
-
and many of them are eating blood
-
drinking blood
-
vampires are drinking blood
-
like there's this obsession of the satanic
-
there's this obsession of the ungodly
-
with blood
-
you have the Mayans
-
and you have the Aztecs
-
and you have the Native Americans
-
you know they're obsessed with eating blood
-
and drinking blood
-
you know the Bible forbids this
-
you go into India
-
into these dark corners of the world of Hinduism
-
they're into blood
-
I mean they've not seen Indiana Jones
-
and the Temple of Doom
-
it's weird all right
-
they're doing weird stuff
-
I know it's a movie but you know
-
I'm just saying like hey it's weird
-
but you know we're not looking for blood
-
to sustain us forever
-
okay it's the Spirit of God
-
that gives us that life
-
and being renewed in our spirit
-
and you know we shouldn't be so obsessed with the blood
-
you know in church
-
you know you should realize that
-
there's something more powerful than blood
-
it's the Spirit
-
and you see Jesus Christ
-
saying who is my mother
-
who is my brother
-
you know what's more important
-
than a blood relative
-
is a spiritual relative
-
and so you know the Spirit usurps the blood
-
and you know we shouldn't be dwelling on the blood
-
you know of course many people are dwelling on blood the day
-
they dwell on blood
-
because they think about genetics
-
they're always concerned with genetics
-
and they're like
-
we got to save the world
-
by all being one color
-
or one race
-
or or having you know
-
it's all about bloodlines
-
it's all about genetics
-
it's all about this group of people
-
or it's about family
-
like everything that's not trying to serve God
-
it's always about blood or something
-
yeah okay
-
it's always about my family
-
or my bloodline
-
or my heritage
-
or my you know white supremacy
-
or black supremacy
-
or whatever
-
you know
-
and I like how white people always demonize
-
the only people that want this
-
it's like bro
-
go with me in the ghetto
-
and you'll meet people that say like
-
they're the physical descendants of Israel
-
and they're dark as night
-
okay
-
like and then you would go meet some Jews
-
and they'll say they're the physical descendants of Abraham
-
okay
-
and then you'll we meet some white people
-
and they say like
-
well we're better than them
-
you know and just like
-
everybody thinks they're better
-
but you know what's better
-
spirit
-
spiritual family
-
the spiritual truths of the bible
-
and you know what's better than the
-
carnal truths of the bible
-
the spiritual truths of the bible
-
okay
-
so don't eat blood number one
-
but number two
-
you know let the spirit be more important than the blood
-
and you know that's
-
that's where we're gonna all be anyways
-
we behold wonders things of thy law
-
we're gonna have eternal life
-
you know if you haven't believed in the Lord Jesus Christ
-
you need to settle that today
-
but you know there's cool things in the bible
-
when you're saved
-
and you take the time to slow down
-
so hopefully next time you read through Leviticus
-
you'll kind of see some of the pictures
-
you'll see some of these elements
-
and we'll understand that the sacrifices of Leviticus
-
were to all point us to Christ
-
let's close in prayer
-
thank you heavenly father so much for your word
-
thank you for the sacrifice of Christ
-
for him being
-
you know this perfect spotless lamb
-
willing to die on the cross for our sins
-
willing to bear the burden of all of our sins
-
willing to have his blood sprinkled
-
and shed and poured out
-
willing for his his soul to send in the hell
-
for three days and three nights
-
but to come out victorious
-
and I pray that we would follow in his footsteps
-
that we would love the bible
-
that we'd love the pictures
-
that we would embrace the spiritual truths of the bible
-
that we wouldn't be offended
-
by the carnal truths or the spiritual truths
-
and that we would elevate the spiritual over the carnal
-
in Jesus name we pray amen
