  1. Please take your Bibles and open them up this morning again to the book of Colossians.

  2. ! We are in chapter 2 this morning and our passage is chapter 2 verses 6-10.

    Isaiah 2:6–10

  3. We have made our way past the long introduction of Paul's letter to the church at Colossae

  4. and now we're getting into his body, the main section of the letter.

  5. Chapter 2 verses 6-10 is really a good summary of what Paul hopes to achieve in writing this

  6. letter to the church in Colossae.

  7. So when you found that, Colossians chapter 2 verses 6-10, let's stand together in honor

    Colossians 2:6–10

  8. of the reading of the Word of God.

  9. Paul says,

  10. Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, rooted and built up in

  11. him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.

  12. See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition,

  13. according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ.

  14. For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily, and you have been filled in him who

  15. is the head of all rule and authority.

  16. Grass withers and the flower fades, but the word of the Lord endures forever.

  17. Father God, we ask once more that would you reveal your glory through the preaching of your

  18. word.

  19. God, would you show us Christ this morning so that we would not be taken captive by every

  20. wind and wave of false doctrine.

  21. God, would you make this church a pillar and buttress of the truth.

  22. We pray that we would hold fast to Christ.

  23. We pray this in Jesus' name.

  24. Amen.

  25. You may be seated.

  26. A local area pastor shared a story earlier this week that he had pastored a church somewhere

  27. else years ago, and he said that many years ago a young man approached me to tell me that

  28. he was leaving the church that I pastored at the time.

  29. And he said that this young man came into his office and he beat his chest and said,

  30. the gospel, the gospel.

  31. I am so sick and tired of hearing about the gospel.

  32. I need more.

  33. In other words, he needed more than just this elementary basic stuff.

  34. I've already heard about Jesus.

  35. I've already received Christ.

  36. It's time to move on now to bigger and better things.

  37. When can we finally graduate beyond Christ?

  38. And truth be told, that's not an uncommon experience.

  39. I think if you exist in ministry long enough, you are bound to hear something along those same

  40. lines.

  41. You may have felt something like that yourself, if you're honest.

  42. The great reformer, Martin Luther, you may have heard this story from his ministry.

  43. For 34 years, he preached at St. Mary's Church in Wittenberg, Germany.

  44. And of course, Martin Luther preached relentlessly about the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  45. And this was the soul of his ministry, that we are justified before God, meaning we are declared

  46. righteous in the sight of a holy God, not by virtue of anything in us, not by our works,

  47. but sheerly because of Jesus Christ.

  48. He preached Christ in his life, Christ in his death, Christ in his resurrection, Christ

  49. in his coming again.

  50. He preached Christ.

  51. And eventually, some in his congregation came to him and asked, Pastor, when can we move on

  52. from all of this?

  53. Why do you keep preaching the gospel every week?

  54. And to which he replied, because every week you forget it.

  55. One of the greatest and clearest signs of our weakness and our frailty as sinful men and

  56. women is that we can forget such an incredibly glorious message as the gospel.

  57. And we can grow bored of the most incredible person who has ever stepped foot on the earth.

  58. And we can grow tired of hearing about Jesus.

  59. And we can sometimes be easily lured away into a pursuit of something more.

  60. You know, this boredom with Christ and this pursuit of more is exactly the issue that the

  61. Colossian church was facing here as Paul writes this letter to the church at Colossae.

  62. The Colossians had received Christ Jesus.

  63. They had received the good news of the gospel.

  64. But now these false teachers have come in.

  65. They've crept in with this message of true spiritual fullness.

  66. And true spiritual fullness can be had outside of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  67. We have to move beyond all these basic things in order for us to get there.

  68. Paul responds to this dangerous false teaching by saying, no, no, no, no, no.

  69. You have to remember that you are filled in Christ who is himself the very fullness of God.

  70. You have everything you need in him.

  71. This morning I want to ask the question, what must we do in order to live the full Christian life?

  72. What must we do in order to live the full Christian life?

  73. And Paul gives us two very simple answers to that question.

  74. One, walk in him.

  75. And two, resist everything else.

  76. What must we do to live the full Christian life?

  77. We must walk in him and resist everything else.

  78. First, Paul says the full Christian life is marked by walking in him.

  79. We see this in verses 6 and 7 if you look there with me.

  80. And would you just notice here with me that this is the first command in the entire letter of Colossians.

  81. I mean, how many weeks have we gone through this letter unpacking Paul's first 34 verses here in Colossians.

  82. He has spent 34 verses unveiling this glorious Christ and showing us who he is, how great he is, and what he's done.

  83. He lays that doctrinal foundation so that now he can begin to give us our marching orders here.

  84. And he says,

  85. You want to live the full Christian life?

  86. Well, as you received him, so now walk in him.

  87. Far too often, someone may come to faith in Christ at some point in their life.

  88. And maybe they heard the gospel at a young age and they believed.

  89. Maybe a friend or a neighbor shared the good news with them, but they heard it.

  90. And by the grace of God, they put their faith in Christ.

  91. But then years go by and nothing really changes in their life.

  92. They don't open up their Bible.

  93. They neglect time in prayer.

  94. They don't value the community of the local church.

  95. They start to realize they're falling into the same old patterns and the same old habits that they had before they put their faith in Christ.

  96. And they wonder why their spiritual life isn't very full.

  97. And so then they leave these things behind in pursuit of something else to fill that gap in their life.

  98. Paul sums up the solution pretty well here in just these few words.

  99. As you received him, so walk in him.

  100. Just as you received Christ, meaning just as you were taught of him,

  101. and just as you heard the truth about him from Epaphras,

  102. just as you received it with faith, that you heard it, you understood the word of God and truth,

  103. so now keep going in it.

  104. Or to give another example, it's like a newly married couple.

  105. This couple gets married on their wedding day.

  106. They say their vows.

  107. And the pastor asks, do you commit to be faithful?

  108. They say, yes, I do.

  109. Do you commit to love one another?

  110. Yes, I do.

  111. I do.

  112. Till death do us part.

  113. I do.

  114. I do.

  115. But then time goes by and for whatever reason, they grow distant.

  116. They don't speak.

  117. They don't touch.

  118. They don't talk.

  119. They don't laugh.

  120. And they wonder why they don't feel this fullness in their relationship with one another.

  121. And so they begin to search for fullness somewhere else.

  122. Paul says, your coming to faith in Christ is just the beginning of our lifelong walk with Christ.

  123. It's a lifelong oneness with Christ.

  124. So just as you received him, just as you said, I do, now do.

  125. Just as you received him, so walk in him.

  126. Just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, so now live under his lordship.

  127. And you remember, Paul prayed exactly for this in chapter 1, didn't he?

  128. If you look back at chapter 1, verses 9 and 10, you see he prayed.

  129. From the day we heard, we have not ceased to pray for you, asking that you may be filled

  130. with all knowledge of his will and all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so as to walk in

  131. a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him.

  132. And this walk that he's calling us to is a whole manner of life.

  133. Our walk is our practice.

  134. Our walk is what we do.

  135. It's wherever you go and whatever you do.

  136. The Christian is called to do it in him.

  137. And if we're wondering what that walk looks like, he gives us two images here to help explain

  138. what he means.

  139. He says, for one thing, we are to be rooted in him.

  140. This is an agricultural image.

  141. Horticultural image.

  142. The full Christian life, he says, it's like a healthy plant that has its roots established

  143. deep into healthy soil.

  144. And this is where the life source comes from.

  145. If you uproot the plant from the soil, what's going to happen?

  146. It's going to shrivel up and die.

  147. If you transplant those roots from healthy soil into unhealthy soil, what's going to happen?

  148. The plant is going to shrivel up and die.

  149. You have to remain rooted in him in order to live the full Christian life.

  150. Jesus says something very similar in John 15, doesn't he?

  151. What does he say?

  152. I am the vine and you are the branches.

  153. Abide in me and you will bear much fruit.

  154. This walking is very similar, closely linked to this idea of abiding.

  155. So church, we have to ask, are we walking in him?

  156. Are we abiding in him?

  157. Are we hearing from him daily in his word?

  158. Are we speaking to him daily in prayer?

  159. Are we meditating on his word day and night?

  160. Are we setting our mind on things above where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God?

  161. You might think of the image from the psalm that we read this morning, Psalm chapter 1.

    Psalms 1 chapter mention

  162. This blessed man who meditates on the law of the Lord day and night.

  163. What does it say?

  164. He is like a tree planted by streams of water.

  165. He's rooted in the Lord.

  166. He's established, as Paul says in verse 7, in the Lord.

  167. The full Christian life is rooted in Christ.

  168. But not only this, second image he gives us, Paul says we're also to be built up in him.

  169. This is now an architectural image.

  170. Christ isn't just a stepping stone on the way to something else.

  171. Christ is the cornerstone on which the whole structure of the church is built.

  172. As I thought through this this week, my mind stuck on that agricultural image.

  173. So I want to stay there for just a minute.

  174. I went to Isaiah chapter 61.

    Isaiah 61 chapter mention

  175. And if you know Isaiah 61, it gives this beautiful image of Christ proclaiming the good news to the end

  176. and the effect that his people may be, it says, oaks of righteousness.

  177. Oaks of righteousness.

  178. Now you think about an oak tree.

  179. That's a big tree, right?

  180. Now you think of that one that's out here in my front yard?

  181. People comment on that tree all the time.

  182. Why?

  183. Because it is big.

  184. It's massive.

  185. It's healthy.

  186. It's sturdy.

  187. It's established.

  188. It's tall.

  189. It's flourishing.

  190. It's weathered storms.

  191. It was here for Hugo 37 years ago.

  192. And every hurricane since.

  193. And the winds blew and it tossed it back and forth.

  194. But that thing is still there.

  195. Stable.

  196. Sturdy.

  197. Healthy.

  198. Established.

  199. It's strong.

  200. Church.

  201. Church.

  202. I want us to be oaks of righteousness.

  203. Don't you want that for yourself?

  204. And we don't want to be just little shrippled up twigs on the ground that when the wind blows it just tosses them far away.

  205. We want to be anchored and sturdy and rooted and strong and healthy and thriving and established in Christ.

  206. So that when the winds and the waves come and they strike, we are still there unfazed.

  207. So that when people see us and they look at Sea Wee Bay, they ask, what is the secret to your strength?

  208. What is the secret to your stability?

  209. And we can say we are rooted and built up in Christ.

  210. You notice how many times it says in him?

  211. All through chapter 2.

  212. Walk in him.

  213. Verse 6.

  214. Rooted, built up in him.

  215. In him.

  216. Verse 9.

  217. In him.

  218. Verse 10.

  219. In him.

  220. Verse 11.

  221. And then it shifts to with him.

  222. Verse 12.

  223. With him.

  224. Verse 13.

  225. Back to in him.

  226. Verse 15.

  227. Do you get the idea here?

  228. The full Christian life is all about life in Christ.

  229. We thrive and live in him and with him and for him.

  230. It is about him.

  231. For from him and to him and through him are all things.

  232. To him be all the glory forever and ever.

  233. Amen.

  234. Is this how you see it?

  235. Is this how you see it?

  236. Or are you tired of hearing about Christ?

  237. And do you want to sink your roots down deeper into him?

  238. Or do you wish that I could just move on and talk about something else for a little bit?

  239. One way to check your heart here is to ask, am I abounding in thanksgiving for who he is and what he's done?

  240. I love how Paul connects these truths here.

  241. In verse 7.

  242. He says, walk in him just as you were taught.

  243. Don't move past it.

  244. Abide in him.

  245. Think on the gospel.

  246. Remember the glory of Jesus.

  247. Don't move on past it.

  248. Sink your roots down deep into the fact that you are justified by faith in Christ.

  249. Be built up by the truth that you are adopted as a son or a daughter of God.

  250. By faith in him.

  251. Be anchored and rooted and nourished and strengthened by the fact that his blood has washed away all of your sins.

  252. And by faith in him you are forgiven of all of your sins.

  253. You are loved by God.

  254. You have been reconciled to God by his blood.

  255. Sink your roots down deep into the fact that you are redeemed by Christ.

  256. And in Christ you have a certain hope ahead of you that no matter what comes today or tomorrow or next week or next year.

  257. You have glory ahead of you because you are in Christ.

  258. When you consider what it is that you've been given in Christ.

  259. Church, how can your heart not abound in thanksgiving?

  260. And when your heart abounds in thanksgiving, when you're full of thankfulness for Christ and what he's done,

  261. you will have no appetite for any who would lead you astray with a promise of more beyond Jesus.

  262. The full Christian life is a call to walk in Christ.

  263. And second, it is a call to resist everything else.

  264. We see this in our second point this morning here in verses 8 through 10.

  265. Look there starting in verse 8.

  266. And this is the second command that he gives in the letter.

  267. He says, walk in him and second.

  268. See to it that no one takes you captive.

  269. See to it that no one takes you captive.

  270. He's shifting now to war language, isn't he?

  271. This is battle language.

  272. Church, do you realize that we are not in peacetime right now?

  273. Do you understand that we are at war?

  274. Peacetime will come when Christ comes.

  275. Right now we are in a very real spiritual war.

  276. J.C. Ryle, in his book on holiness, he says,

  277. True Christianity is a fight.

  278. And the Christian is a soldier from the day of his baptism until the day of his death.

  279. He has to fight against a world that loves error,

  280. against a devil who is a master of deception,

  281. and against his own fleshly heart.

  282. If you think that you can float down the stream of time into heaven without a struggle,

  283. you are terribly deceived.

  284. William Gurnall, 17th century Puritan.

  285. He wrote a series of sermons on Ephesians 6,

  286. which calls us to put on the whole armor of God,

  287. that we may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.

  288. He says, for we do not wrestle against flesh and blood,

  289. but against the rulers, against the authorities,

  290. against the cosmic powers over this present darkness,

  291. against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.

  292. He wrote a series of sermons on this passage

  293. that eventually became a classic book on spiritual warfare

  294. called The Christian in Complete Armor.

  295. I would recommend any and all of you to take it up and read.

  296. In it, he says this,

  297. The Christian's life is a continual warfare.

  298. The peace of the soul is a garrison peace.

  299. It is maintained by a constant guard.

  300. We must not expect to be kept from our enemies,

  301. but rather to be kept in the midst of them.

  302. He says this war is a spiritual holocaust.

  303. Either you destroy the power of Satan in your life

  304. by putting on the whole armor of God and keeping it on,

  305. or Satan will destroy you.

  306. Do you realize the severity and the seriousness of this, church?

  307. We are not in peacetime.

  308. Every single one of us is in the midst of a spiritual battle.

  309. This is how Paul understood the issue here in Colossae.

  310. And so, Paul says,

  311. We must see to it that no one takes you captive.

  312. Literally, that word means to be carried off as a slave,

  313. to be hijacked,

  314. taken away like military plunder,

  315. to be stolen.

  316. But just think about that image for a minute.

  317. If you knew that someone was trying to take you captive,

  318. what would you do?

  319. I mean, you would do everything in your power

  320. to keep that from happening, wouldn't you?

  321. If you knew that someone was coming

  322. to take you away from your home,

  323. take you away from your family,

  324. take you away from your job,

  325. take you away from your possessions,

  326. what would you do?

  327. You would fortify your defenses, wouldn't you?

  328. You'd probably buy some guns and ammo, wouldn't you?

  329. Some of you live like this already.

  330. And you would stock up.

  331. You might learn some self-defense.

  332. You would seal up the doors.

  333. You would lock them well at night.

  334. You would probably put alarms in your home.

  335. You would be mindful of your surroundings.

  336. You would be mindful of who was near you.

  337. You would pay attention to their mannerisms.

  338. You would listen closely to what they had to say.

  339. You would be on guard.

  340. You would see to it

  341. that no one took you captive, wouldn't you?

  342. Paul says, in fact, there are some

  343. who would take you captive.

  344. The threat is very real.

  345. There are some who would take you captive

  346. out in the world

  347. who would very much like to steal you away

  348. and take you as their slave.

  349. But they don't come by force.

  350. They don't come knocking down your door.

  351. They come to take you captive

  352. not with weapons,

  353. but with words.

  354. With ideas.

  355. With false systems of thought

  356. that are, as Paul says,

  357. not according to Christ.

  358. The enemy would seek to take you captive

  359. by lying to you

  360. and leading you to believe

  361. any system of thought

  362. that is not according to Christ.

  363. Meaning,

  364. any system of thought

  365. that belittles the glory of God.

  366. And Paul says,

  367. see to it

  368. that no one takes you captive

  369. with philosophy

  370. and empty deceit.

  371. This word philosophy,

  372. this isn't like philosophy in general,

  373. like what you might have studied in school,

  374. like Plato and Aristotle.

  375. This is a word

  376. that's used in Paul's day

  377. to refer to any system of thought,

  378. any system of teaching.

  379. And again,

  380. he's contrasting

  381. this system of teaching

  382. with the faith

  383. that they received.

  384. The truth

  385. that they were taught

  386. by Epaphras.

  387. This false teaching

  388. is not according to

  389. the tradition.

  390. It is according to

  391. human tradition.

  392. It's not according to Christ.

  393. It's according to

  394. the elemental spirits

  395. of the world.

  396. And there's a variety

  397. of understanding

  398. and opinions

  399. on what that phrase means.

  400. I think most likely

  401. he's referring to demons

  402. here.

  403. But most importantly though,

  404. here's the key,

  405. it is not according

  406. to Christ.

  407. And do you notice

  408. the irony here?

  409. These false teachers

  410. promise fullness

  411. by their teaching,

  412. but how does Paul

  413. describe it?

  414. It is empty deceit.

  415. False teaching

  416. promises fullness

  417. and joy apart

  418. from Christ,

  419. but at the end of the day

  420. it can never deliver.

  421. We must see

  422. to it

  423. that we are not

  424. taken

  425. captive.

  426. John MacArthur

  427. preached a sermon

  428. on this text

  429. and I'm thankful

  430. that he did

  431. because he identified

  432. several components

  433. of this particular

  434. false teaching

  435. that's happening

  436. here in Colossae.

  437. Again,

  438. we don't know

  439. exactly what it was

  440. specifically to be able

  441. to put a label on it,

  442. but he identified

  443. four key components

  444. of it.

  445. For one,

  446. he says,

  447. this false teaching

  448. has hints of humanism.

  449. It has in it,

  450. it's rooted in

  451. human tradition,

  452. human wisdom,

  453. love of human ideas.

  454. And for another,

  455. it involves legalism,

  456. this extra-biblical

  457. commands of

  458. do not handle,

  459. do not taste,

  460. do not touch,

  461. these extra-biblical

  462. rules and regulations,

  463. all of which were rooted

  464. in Jewish teaching,

  465. by the way.

  466. Third,

  467. it involved mysticism,

  468. this worship of angels,

  469. obsession with the

  470. spiritual realms

  471. and authorities.

  472. And fourth,

  473. it involved

  474. asceticism,

  475. harshness

  476. to the body,

  477. cutting the body

  478. to enhance the spiritual.

  479. This is what the

  480. Colossians were facing

  481. and all of it

  482. sounds convincing enough

  483. and all of it

  484. looks impressive enough,

  485. all of it on the surface

  486. looks appealing.

  487. Paul says,

  488. none of it

  489. is according to Christ.

  490. These false teachers,

  491. maybe they mean well

  492. in their own mind,

  493. I don't know,

  494. I'm sure that they're

  495. convinced that they are

  496. right,

  497. but they're playing

  498. a role

  499. in a demonic agenda

  500. to undermine

  501. the purity

  502. of the church

  503. and to take people

  504. captive

  505. to lies.

  506. Do you realize

  507. we still face

  508. these same threats

  509. today?

  510. We face

  511. our own isms.

  512. They may not be

  513. the exact same things

  514. that the Colossians

  515. were facing,

  516. but the enemy

  517. is not done

  518. trying to take

  519. people captive

  520. and undermine

  521. the purity

  522. of the church,

  523. is he?

  524. How tempted

  525. is the church

  526. today

  527. to pursue

  528. legalism?

  529. Do not handle,

  530. do not taste,

  531. do not touch.

  532. It is unbelievable

  533. how quickly

  534. a church

  535. can develop

  536. a culture

  537. of legalism,

  538. adding rules

  539. and expectations

  540. that have nothing

  541. to do with Christ

  542. and the gospel,

  543. but what must

  544. be followed

  545. in order to be in.

  546. That's legalism.

  547. How tempted

  548. is the church

  549. to pursue

  550. modernism?

  551. To reject

  552. this whole

  553. doctrinal thing,

  554. this whole

  555. truth thing,

  556. and to reject

  557. church tradition

  558. in order to

  559. appeal to

  560. a new generation,

  561. to be modern

  562. and to be fresh.

  563. I went to a church

  564. years ago

  565. in a different city

  566. and all I remember

  567. from that service

  568. was they played

  569. a Rocky clip

  570. on the screen

  571. and a Taylor Swift

  572. song from the stage.

  573. I don't remember

  574. what was preached.

  575. How tempted

  576. is the church

  577. to pursue

  578. modernism?

  579. How tempted

  580. is the church

  581. to run

  582. after theological

  583. liberalism?

  584. Do you realize

  585. that entire

  586. denominations

  587. are falling apart

  588. because they

  589. have embraced

  590. the lie,

  591. the idea

  592. that the atoning

  593. work of Jesus

  594. Christ is somehow

  595. secondary to

  596. affirmation and

  597. acceptance of

  598. things that the

  599. Bible clearly calls

  600. us to understand

  601. are sinful.

  602. How tempted

  603. is the church

  604. to obsess

  605. over political

  606. activism?

  607. Insisting

  608. that real

  609. Christians must

  610. vote this way,

  611. do this thing,

  612. promote this

  613. candidate in order

  614. to be truly

  615. faithful to the

  616. Lord.

  617. I mean,

  618. be engaged

  619. all you want.

  620. That is wonderful.

  621. But when a church

  622. looks more like a

  623. political rally

  624. than a worship

  625. service,

  626. we have a problem.

  627. How tempted

  628. is the church

  629. to chase

  630. reactionarianism?

  631. That's not a word.

  632. I made that one up.

  633. You won't find that

  634. in a dictionary.

  635. I can't tell you

  636. how many times

  637. I have seen

  638. or heard

  639. someone say

  640. something like,

  641. if your church

  642. doesn't talk about

  643. fill in the blank

  644. this Sunday,

  645. you better find

  646. a new church.

  647. Give me a break.

  648. Now,

  649. I'm not saying

  650. turn a blind eye

  651. to the culture.

  652. Of course,

  653. pay attention

  654. to the culture.

  655. But there are

  656. always cultural

  657. issues to

  658. obsess over.

  659. There's always

  660. a cultural

  661. emergency

  662. to respond to.

  663. Can we just

  664. be busy

  665. talking about

  666. Jesus?

  667. One more.

  668. Have I stepped

  669. on any toes yet?

  670. One more

  671. for our

  672. denomination

  673. in particular.

  674. How tempted

  675. is the church

  676. to run

  677. after pragmatism?

  678. Chasing a

  679. whatever works

  680. mindset

  681. and philosophy

  682. of ministry

  683. over what

  684. has God

  685. said?

  686. Philosophy

  687. of ministry.

  688. Choosing

  689. rather to do

  690. whatever will

  691. fill empty

  692. seats than

  693. to trust the

  694. word of God

  695. to do the

  696. work of

  697. ministry.

  698. See,

  699. the forms

  700. of the lie

  701. may look a

  702. little different

  703. from generation

  704. to generation.

  705. Our isms

  706. may be different

  707. than the isms

  708. that the

  709. Colossian church

  710. faced.

  711. But church,

  712. the essence

  713. is the same.

  714. The playbook

  715. of the enemy

  716. has not

  717. changed.

  718. He wants

  719. to take

  720. you captive

  721. with the

  722. idea

  723. that something

  724. beyond Christ

  725. is what we

  726. really need

  727. to obsess

  728. over.

  729. Do

  730. not

  731. let

  732. them

  733. do it.

  734. See

  735. to it

  736. that no

  737. one

  738. takes you

  739. captive

  740. by any

  741. teaching

  742. that is

  743. not

  744. according

  745. to Christ.

  746. Why?

  747. Because

  748. church,

  749. Christ

  750. Jesus

  751. is all

  752. that we

  753. need.

  754. Haven't

  755. we seen

  756. who Jesus

  757. is?

  758. And Paul

  759. reminds us

  760. once again

  761. who Jesus

  762. is here

  763. at the end

  764. of our passage.

  765. I want to show

  766. you two

  767. breathtaking truths

  768. here as we

  769. close.

  770. Where Paul

  771. shows us

  772. in verses

  773. 9 and 10

  774. he brings us

  775. back to where

  776. we need to

  777. fix our eyes.

  778. He brings us

  779. back to the

  780. glory of Christ.

  781. He says

  782. first truth

  783. in him

  784. all the

  785. fullness of

  786. deity dwells

  787. bodily.

  788. Who is

  789. Jesus?

  790. He is

  791. the fullness

  792. of God

  793. in the

  794. flesh.

  795. You remember

  796. that issue

  797. of asceticism?

  798. We need

  799. to be hard

  800. on the body

  801. and put

  802. away the

  803. body

  804. and eliminate

  805. the body

  806. in order

  807. to emphasize

  808. the spiritual.

  809. Paul says

  810. y'all got

  811. this all

  812. backwards.

  813. No,

  814. no,

  815. no,

  816. no,

  817. no.

  818. Jesus

  819. is God

  820. incarnate.

  821. He is

  822. God

  823. in the

  824. flesh.

  825. Jesus

  826. took on

  827. a body.

  828. He entered

  829. into skin

  830. and flesh

  831. and blood

  832. and bone

  833. and he

  834. is even

  835. now in

  836. glory.

  837. He lives

  838. and reigns

  839. and rules

  840. in a

  841. resurrected

  842. body,

  843. the same

  844. exact type

  845. of body

  846. you and

  847. I will

  848. have

  849. when we

  850. join him

  851. in glory.

  852. This is

  853. check and

  854. mate for

  855. these false

  856. teachers.

  857. The problem

  858. isn't the

  859. body.

  860. Jesus came

  861. in the body

  862. to redeem

  863. the body.

  864. Your body

  865. is very

  866. much a

  867. part of

  868. God's

  869. plan of

  870. redemption.

  871. The whole

  872. fullness of

  873. deity dwells

  874. in him

  875. bodily.

  876. And he

  877. says second

  878. truth,

  879. you have

  880. been filled

  881. in him

  882. who is the

  883. head of

  884. all rule

  885. and authority.

  886. So why

  887. would I

  888. worship an

  889. angel or

  890. submit to

  891. the teaching

  892. of a

  893. demon when

  894. I can

  895. worship the

  896. one who

  897. is the

  898. head of

  899. all rule

  900. and

  901. authority.

  902. He is

  903. God in

  904. the flesh

  905. and you

  906. have been

  907. filled in

  908. him.

  909. This is

  910. what it

  911. means to

  912. be a

  913. Christian

  914. church.

  915. You

  916. have been

  917. filled in

  918. him.

  919. So what

  920. could anyone

  921. else add

  922. to you that

  923. Jesus is

  924. not already

  925. for you?

  926. You have

  927. been filled

  928. in him who

  929. is the

  930. very fullness

  931. of God.

  932. Are you

  933. filled in

  934. Christ?

  935. If not,

  936. then friend,

  937. the call of

  938. this passage

  939. is to put

  940. your faith

  941. in Christ,

  942. to shun

  943. and turn

  944. away from

  945. the empty

  946. deceit of

  947. the world

  948. and to

  949. come to

  950. Christ to

  951. find full

  952. satisfaction

  953. in him,

  954. to put

  955. your faith

  956. in him

  957. and find

  958. what it

  959. means to

  960. be truly

  961. spiritually

  962. satisfied.

  963. Charles

  964. Spurgeon,

  965. in his book

  966. The Soul

  967. Winner,

  968. gave some

  969. advice for

  970. Christian

  971. preaching,

  972. good

  973. Christian

  974. gospel

  975. preaching.

  976. He said

  977. this,

  978. he said,

  979. I believe

  980. that those

  981. sermons

  982. which are

  983. the fullest

  984. of Christ

  985. are the

  986. most likely

  987. to be

  988. blessed

  989. to the

  990. conversion

  991. of the

  992. hearers.

  993. Let

  994. your

  995. sermons

  996. be full

  997. of Christ

  998. from

  999. beginning

  1000. to end

  1001. crammed

  1002. full of

  1003. the gospel.

  1004. As for

  1005. myself,

  1006. brethren,

  1007. I cannot

  1008. preach

  1009. anything

  1010. but Christ

  1011. and his

  1012. cross,

  1013. for I

  1014. know

  1015. nothing

  1016. else.

  1017. And long

  1018. ago,

  1019. like the

  1020. apostle

  1021. Paul,

  1022. I determined

  1023. not to

  1024. know

  1025. anything

  1026. else

  1027. save

  1028. Jesus

  1029. Christ

  1030. and

  1031. him

  1032. crucified.

  1033. People

  1034. have

  1035. often

  1036. asked

  1037. me,

  1038. what's

  1039. the

  1040. secret

  1041. of

  1042. your

  1043. success?

  1044. I've

  1045. always

  1046. answered

  1047. that I

  1048. have no

  1049. other

  1050. secret

  1051. but this,

  1052. that I

  1053. have

  1054. preached

  1055. the

  1056. gospel,

  1057. not

  1058. about

  1059. the

  1060. gospel,

  1061. but

  1062. the

  1063. gospel,

  1064. the

  1065. full,

  1066. free,

  1067. glorious

  1068. gospel

  1069. of the

  1070. living

  1071. Christ,

  1072. who is

  1073. the

  1074. incarnation

  1075. of the

  1076. good

  1077. news.

  1078. Preach

  1079. Jesus

  1080. Christ,

  1081. brethren,

  1082. always and

  1083. everywhere,

  1084. and every

  1085. time you

  1086. preach,

  1087. be sure to

  1088. have much

  1089. of Jesus

  1090. Christ in

  1091. the sermon.

  1092. You know,

  1093. that's not just

  1094. advice for good

  1095. Christian preaching.

  1096. that is advice

  1097. for good

  1098. Christian living.

  1099. Let your

  1100. life be

  1101. full of

  1102. Christ

  1103. from

  1104. beginning

  1105. to end,

  1106. crammed

  1107. full of

  1108. the gospel.

  1109. Know

  1110. nothing else

  1111. save Christ

  1112. and him

  1113. crucified.

  1114. And when

  1115. others ask

  1116. you what

  1117. your secret

  1118. is,

  1119. always have

  1120. the answer

  1121. to give

  1122. that you

  1123. have received

  1124. Christ,

  1125. the full,

  1126. free,

  1127. glorious

  1128. Christ.

  1129. And so

  1130. you walk

  1131. in him

  1132. and resist

  1133. everything else.

  1134. Let's pray.

  1135. Father,

  1136. we ask

  1137. would you

  1138. root us

  1139. and build

  1140. us up

  1141. and establish

  1142. us in

  1143. Christ.

  1144. Christ.

  1145. We ask

  1146. would you

  1147. fill our

  1148. hearts with

  1149. thankfulness

  1150. to Jesus

  1151. for who he

  1152. is and

  1153. what he's

  1154. done so

  1155. full that

  1156. we have

  1157. no room

  1158. to listen

  1159. to the

  1160. lies of

  1161. the enemy.

  1162. Would you

  1163. guard this

  1164. church

  1165. from every

  1166. false system

  1167. of doctrine

  1168. that would

  1169. undermine

  1170. the glory

  1171. of Jesus?

  1172. Would you

  1173. help us

  1174. constantly

  1175. to look

  1176. to him

  1177. with joyful

  1178. faith

  1179. for who

  1180. he is

  1181. and what

  1182. he's

  1183. done?

  1184. We love

  1185. you,

  1186. Father.

  1187. We pray

  1188. this in

  1189. Jesus'

  1190. name.

  1191. Amen.
