Th- this is our foundation verse for the whole year, and we've been declaring that we're moving from cautious to courageous.

And Joshua chapter 1 simply says, "Have I not commanded you to be strong and courageous? Do not be afraid or dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go."

I said this last week.

It seems like everywhere I go, this verse is popping up in front of me.

We were on the Man Cave call on Thursday, and, uh, we were in our conversation, and one of the guys goes, "Hey, let me show you my journal."

And it said, "Be strong and courageous."

And he was like, "I had that before we even launched into the series."

And I thought, "Man, Lord, you're just gonna continue to echo your heart to us at every turn."

And so as we think about being strong and courageous, I don't want it to just be some sort of mantra.

I want you and I to walk it out.

Yeah.

Are you with me? So on the count of three, I want us to read that, and where the blank is, I want you to put your name.

I want you to declare it to yourself the same way we just declared that dead things come to life.

Father, in Jesus' name, we thank You that as we walk in this season of courageous faith, God, we pray that we'll walk with our head up and our shoulders back with our eyes focused on You.

I pray, Holy Spirit, that now as we jump into Your Word, I pray that the same intensity that we felt during worship we'll feel during the Word.

I pray, God, that Your Word will quicken us, that it'll be sharp, it'll be powerful, and that we'll leave here changed.

I pray, God, that we'll leave here with faith focused on You.

In the mighty name of Jesus we pray, amen.

Hebrews 11, Hebrews 11, that's our foundational text We, we, we're going through the Book of Joshua.

We, the, in, in Joshua chapter 3, they're starting to walk through the Jordan River, and as they stepped in, the Bible says that the priest stepped their foot in, and as they stepped in, the waters on both sides were held up, and the people were able to walk over on dry ground.

And we said that there was some things inside of Joshua chapter 3 that identified what a courageous group of people look like.

And so, uh, in Hebrews chapter 11 was where we found our foundational verse as it relates to being courageous in faith.

It says this in verse one: "Now faith is the substance of things hoped for.

It's the evidence of things not seen.

For by that faith, elders obtained a good testimony.

By faith, we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things which were not see- which are seen were not made of things which are visible.

It was by faith that Abel offered to God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, through which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts, and through it, he being dead still speaks.

It was by faith Enoch was taken away so that he did not see death and was not found, because God had taken him.

For before he was taken, he had this testimony.

He pleased God.

But without faith," verse six says, "it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him."

It says that Enoch, when you saw him, it was said of him that he simply pleased God.

Verse six says that it's, if you gonna have faith, it's gonna be impossible to please God without faith.

Because if you approach Him, you have to believe that He is and that He rewards those that diligently seek Him.

Last week, we asked this question: Well, what does it look like to be a church and people that will please the Lord? And we said that there were several things that we could pull from Joshua chapter 3.

I'm actually gonna spend the majority of my time in Hebrews chapter 11 today.

But we said this just as a statement.

We said a church that pleases God is gonna be made up of people who are pleasing God.

Yeah.

A church that's pleasing God is gonna be made up of people that's pleasing God.

The reason why is that the church is not a physical facility.

That's right.

You are the church of Jesus Christ.

That's right.

Yeah.

And mobilized together, we are a movement- Yeah that hell can't stop.

Yep.

And so if you're pleasing God and you're pleasing God and you're pleasing God and I'm pleasing God, when we get together, anything can happen.

And so we have to have our faith focused on Him so that we can please Him.

But what do the qualities of someone that's pleasing God look like? Write this down.

I'm just gonna give them to you quickly, and then we're gonna go back into the last one.

First one is y- we're gonna be faith-filled.

We're gonna be faith-filled.

Second one, we're gonna be bold We're gonna be unified.

Do you know what unity has? Unity sometimes will have disagreements.

You know that? Like, my wife and I, we've been married for 24 years in March.

No, no, no.

My, my...

Did you...

She, she didn't say amen.

She said, "Why you, why you mention that?" Oh, why am I guessing? Oh, I was like, I was like...

So, so we've been married for 24 years.

We are unified, but we haven't always agreed on everything.

But what we have done is once the decision is made, we leave unified.

So it doesn't mean that you're not gonna disagree sometimes.

It just means that when we leave this room, we charge the hill and nothing's gonna break us.

Got it.

So we wanna be, we're gonna be a unified people.

We're gonna be a loving people.

We're gonna be, we're gonna be a loving people.

Uh, a- as a pastor, I, I, I get to sit in small groups, and I get to be poured into by other pastors.

And, and, and there are times when, uh, they, they will rebuke us as pastors because there are pastors or leaders or people who will say, "I just don't love people."

And they're like, "Well, you won't reflect Christ's heart."

Like, you and I are called to love people.

We will struggle liking them.

Yes.

Yes.

You know what I'm saying? Like, there are times when I know Taisha's like, "I really don't like you, but I love you."

Right? Like, there are times that there are tensions, but still love you.

Like I, I, I can love my enemy even though they hurt me.

Yeah.

Why? Because the love of Christ Jesus- Yeah was displayed for them as well.

Yeah.

And so we wanna be a loving people.

And then the last thing is, is that we want to be a reverent people.

I left last Sunday feeling like that like the Lord wanted to do more, if I can be honest with you.

Like I, I, I couldn't just get to the next characteristic.

I felt like the Lord was like, "I'm not done yet with talking about my awe and how we are to approach the Father."

And so we're actually gonna settle back in because we said this last week, a reverent people fears the Lord, and they live with a sincere obedience to Him.

Like a reverence people says, "God, I stand in awe of you."

That's literally what it means when we fear God.

"I stand in awe of you.

My life is filled with how amazing you are.

Like, you are, you are so big.

You are so amazing.

I cannot fathom why you would love me, but you do.

I cannot fathom why you would bless me, but you do.

I cannot fathom the fact that you would die on a cross for me, but you do.

I cannot fathom the fact that you would include me in your plan for humanity, knowing how frail I am, how I disappoint you, how I sin against you, how I'm frustrated and mad at you and talk about you.

I stand in awe of the fact that you love me in spite of me."

One of the other definitions of being in the fear of the Lord is that I am aware that He's holy And he has all authority Have you been there when you felt like you had the final say? I know I do I looked up the word pleasing, and literally this is what it meant.

Pleasing Like I, I went through the Bible and it meant pleasing.

Like my desire is to make him happy.

My desire is to fulfill what's on his heart.

My desire is to make him smile.

My desire is to make sure that I am lockstep with what is making his heart beat and smile We wrote this, we said this, that reverence for God isn't fear that's gonna drive us away, but it's gonna be an awe that draws us to Him That's in awe that draws us to Him James chapter 4 verse 8 says, "Draw near to God and He draws near to you."

The question is, is are we taking God seriously or are we treating him casually? We said that.

Like, were you able to answer that question? I don't know if you went home and looked at your notes last week, but that was part of our question is like, am I taking God seriously or am I taking him casually? Right.

Is he my homeboy now? Right? Do, do we say things like, "I know him.

I know how he normally responds to me."

Because here's the thing, if you're like me, I've been a little kid in church, I know how God talks to me.

But the question is, do I know how he's gonna talk to me in September? Do I know how God is gonna show up for me in September? Do I know how God's gonna show up for me, assuming that tomorrow is Monday and that there is a Monday? Will I be anticipating what he may do that's new- Right on Monday? Like, do I-- am I taking him casually day to day, or am I standing in awe of what could Monday have for me? You trending all right? Yeah.

We said this, we said that we can either take God's word seriously or we just don't.

We can have humility of heart with his conviction, or we can simply ignore him and rationalize our disobedience.

We can obey him with the reverence that's due his name no matter what, or we'll do what we want.

Y'all, I, I, I, I was having self-reflection, self-awareness this week about that one because I sometimes, and maybe you, you, you do this, I sometimes will tell God what I won't do Y'all are looking at me funny.

We all do it from time to time.

I, no, no, don't get mad at me, but I will not give of my finances Think about that.

Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.

I just told God what I'm not gonna do.

I am not gonna witness to that person who I know you telling me I should be witnessing to.

Yeah.

Y'all are looking at me funny.

I'm talking to you.

Amen.

Talk back in church is what I'm...

Like, I will not forgive them Thank you.

Come on.

Now we're getting somewhere Like I tell God what I'm gonna do, expecting God to go, "You know what? I changed my mind on my standard.

Don't forgive them.

Don't be generous with your tithe and your offering.

Don't serve in my house.

Don't forgive them.

Don't witness to them.

Don't love them unconditionally.

Keep the strife in your home."

I'm okay with that now Security Or do we go, "It may pain me to forgive them.

It might pain me to give.

It might pain me to witness because I get nervous and I might fumble over my words and they may not like me and they may call me a holy roller once I talk to them."

May pain me But it's at no matter the cost.

Why? Because my fear and honor of you says I trust that you'll be in whatever moment you ask of me See, we said, we said this and I'm just catching you up.

It's not that people don't believe in God, it's just that we believe Him without revering Him So this morning, I want us to think about this thought.

When our awe of God fades, our view of God is going to shrink.

When our awe of God fades, our view of God will shrink By faith, we understand that the world was framed by the Word of God.

Oh my.

How many of y'all believe that God created the heavens and the Earth? Yeah.

When our view of God begins to fade, our focus of Him will shrink as well.

Yeah.

You will find on YouTube so many communicators who will say something like this, "I once believed."

Yeah.

"Until" Judges chapter six says this And I said to you, "I am the Lord your God.

Do not fear."

Y'all see that word? Do not give your awe.

Do not make sacred.

Do not place in authority- That's good the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell.

But you did not obey my voice.

Like, God's like, "Hey, I'm in front of you, but you chose to give the authority, and the awe, and the splendor, and the glory, and the authority to the place of culture that you reside in.

You couldn't even hear my voice.

My voice became so common to you that you lost the awe."

Yeah.

Because it began to fade Write this down.

Write this down.

When my view of God shrinks, my faith becomes cynical We're still in Hebrews, by the way Because it says without faith it's impossible to please God.

Like, if I don't keep my eye on Him, when I approach Him, I could be approaching with, "The last time I prayed.

I, I prayed to you, but you ain't do nothing."

Have you ever been there? Yeah.

Where, where you approach Him, but you like, "The last time I did this, it, it didn't work.

So, so what, what good is it to pray?" You ever been there? Like, because my view begins to fade, my faith becomes cynical.

Now, I question even if you for me All right.

Just laying the groundwork The challenge is, is we wanna make sure that as believers in Jesus Christ, that He doesn't become familiar.

There will be ebbs and flows of our walk with the Lord.

There will be high seasons where you're on fire, and then there'll be other seasons where you can start to feel like it's starting to dwindle But His word doesn't change So the fact of the matter is how you and I view God will determine, write this down, how we live.

It will determine how we live.

And because Hebrews said that Enoch walked with God and it pleased Him, and then it says that the elders obtained a good report, and then we got to verse six and says, "But without faith it's impossible to please God.

And if you approach Him, you must believe that He is and that He's a rewarder to those who diligently seek Him."

The reason why the Lord didn't want me to just bounce to it, because the Lord was showing me that all throughout His Word, there's this drawing to Him.

Yeah.

And if we come to Him, He shows up.

Watch this in Exodus chapter three.

This is Moses, because when you read in Hebrews chapter six, you start hearing about by faith Moses.

Yeah, mm-hmm.

By faith Moses.

Like, it's, it's so good.

It says this in Exodus chapter three.

It says, "So when the Lord saw that he had turned aside to look..."

So there's this burning bush, Moses is walking, and he turns to look at the bush.

It says this, "So when the Lord saw that he had turned aside to look, God called to him in the midst of the bush and said, 'Moses, Moses.'

And he said, 'Here I am.'

Then He said, 'Do not draw near this place.

Take your sandals off your feet, for the place where you stand is holy.'

Moreover, He said, 'I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and the God of Jacob.'"

Watch now, "And Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look upon God."

I looked up the word afraid, and it's the same word that we were defining earlier, yare, which means to stand in awe, to be filled with awe, to recognize His holiness and His authority.

So when he hid his face, he's like, "Oh my goodness.

It's not a bush that's burning.

It's the creator of the universe-" Yeah.

revealing Himself to me the way He did to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob," which means that He didn't just leave it to the heroes.

Yeah.

You're meeting me in the middle of my sin, in the middle of my mess.

God just doesn't visit pastors.

He wants to visit you.

Come on.

But can we recognize the fact that even if He meets us in a parking lot, it's holy? Moses, this place, because I'm here, is sacred space Can God meet us in our office cubicle? Can He meet us at the store? Can He meet us in our home? Can He meet us in our car? What if we gave Him space to be Himself, and what if we walked into every day going, "T- this could be the moment that you show up, and I'm going to be ready.

I want to be filled with the awe of my drive to work."

Moses saw God as holy, which then had me asking the Lord, could that be the reason why? 'Cause we read this during 21 days of prayer.

In Exodus 33, when Moses is going, "Are you coming with me? God, are you gonna lead me, guide me?" And then he says, "Now, God," boldly, "show me your glory."

Yeah.

Could it be that because he experienced God in one season, in this new season, he was like, "Now, I know you during the burning bush, but in this season, is there more to your awe and splendor that I haven't recognized yet?" Like a reverent people who please God because I'm constantly hungry.

I wanna know more about you that I haven't discovered yet.

I'm not okay, this is me personally, with my 18-year-old self encountering God at a Fred Hammond concert Where will I meet you in this new space of my life? We will sit in a place of being filled with awe every single day.

God is going to meet us.

Why? Because we're gonna keep coming to where He is.

Y'all all right? So I ask myself this question I'm gonna ask you: Could it be that our reverence or our fear of God lays the groundwork, watch now, of our God-pleasing faith? Could it be that the posture of my heart towards Him, and recognizing His holiness and His authority, and being filled with awe of who He is, and being so hungry to discover who He is, could it be that that's laying the groundwork for my God-pleasing faith? The more time I spend with him, the more he reveals himself to me.

Something is happening on the inside of me every moment I spend with him.

Could it be that Hebrews 11 is setting us up so that the more we spend time with God, the stronger that faith muscle grows? Could it be that God knows something about faith activated in our life that we discover the more we spend with him? Like all throughout scripture, I realize that anytime God positions us, he's already equipped us all around us.

Yeah.

So that means that faith has to be relied upon him.

Mm-hmm.

That, that is not me.

That is him.

Yeah.

Because if you're like me, I have the tension of faith and doubt So let's make note of this so that we're clear.

Faith isn't gonna be a belief in something, but it's going to be a knowing of someone Not a belief in something.

Right.

It's a knowing of someone.

I am going to know him.

Mm-hmm.

Every bit of me is going to rest in him.

If he's gonna be the provider, it's going to rest in him.

Sustainer rest in him.

Peace is gonna rest in him.

Joy is gonna rest in him.

Overflow's gonna rest in him.

Yes.

Yeah.

I'm gonna lean on him- Yeah in everything Think, think about this, think about this, think about this.

The awe of God in our life should be enduring should be enduring I pray as a church that our mind is constantly blown away by the goodness of God Constantly blown away by the goodness of God.

I don't know about y'all, but I, I, I, I, I was listening to Marlowe's testimony.

I have an awe of God I don't care how it happens.

Some in this room might be like, "Oh yeah, but that was the government's plan."

No, no, no, no, no, no Uh-uh.

The government ain't gonna get no credit.

Absolutely not.

Nope.

The awe of God would say, "I choose you to cancel six figures.

Thank you very much.

That's all I need.

I don't care how it comes."

I don't care.

I, I, I don't care.

I don't care how it comes.

Like, God's gonna get the glory.

Yeah.

I'm not gonna rationalize in my mind, "No, no, no, if I'm close enough.

I prayed for this thing.

I fought for this thing.

I fasted for this thing."

Thank you, Lord Jesus Y'all feeling me? Yeah.

But if we're not careful, my natural eyes will cause His glory to fade.

Yeah.

And then I become cynical.

"Oh, now that was your boss person.

They the one that gave you the 10% raise."

No.

He's the one.

Why? Because I'm putting all of my attention in His awe.

That's right.

Everybody good? Yeah.

I hope we getting something today I love Psalms 34:11.

It says, "Come, you children, listen to me.

Watch now, and I will teach you the fear of the Lord."

So guess what, y'all? We can be discipled.

We can be discipled into n- into having our heart postured to where we're standing in awe of Him on a daily basis.

So here's what I'm gonna do, because we love scripture and we're sea- we love searching the scriptures.

I'm just gonna show you and read to you, and you can take a picture of the screen, what the word of God says about the fear of the Lord, the reverence, the holiness.

Just, just, you could, you could just listen.

It says in Psalms 19 verse nine, it says that, "The fear of the Lord," watch now, "is clean, enduring forever.

The judgments of the Lord are righteous and sure altogether."

If you would keep going it say, "More to be desired than fine gold, sweeter even than the honeycomb."

Come on.

Proverbs one verse seven says, "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge."

What? Come on now.

You mean to tell me it's not the academic classwork- Right but if I include the Father in my classwork, then maybe it's not as weighty and heavy as my natural self feels that it is.

That's right.

I know that seems so, like, lofty, but if the fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, I'm gonna include that even when I'm in the classroom.

That's right.

Why? Because I want the awe of God everywhere that I am.

Y'all turning all right? Yes.

The fear of the Lord, I'm gonna overemphasize, just so you know.

Yeah.

Proverbs 1:28 says, "Then they called on me, but I didn't answer.

They will seek me diligent, but they will not find me because they hated knowledge, and they did not choose the fear of the Lord."

God, you're silent.

God, where are you? You haven't listened to me at all.

You didn't view my words as valuable.

I was calling out to you.

I was talking to you.

I was getting your attention.

You ignored everything I said.

You're mad at me.

I never left you.

I was talking about you, but your faith has become cynical.

You-- I'm starting to fade in your eyes.

Come on, let me get your attention one more time Proverbs chapter two verse five says, "Then you will understand the fear of the Lord, and you will find the knowledge of God."

Proverbs 8:13 says, "The fear of the Lord," watch now, "is to hate evil.

Proverbs 8:13

Pride and arrogance and the evil way and the perverse mouth, I hate."

You got pride? Guess what? The Lord's like, "I don't like that."

You got a little bit of arrogance? Guess what? The Lord's like, "That is not mine.

That's yours."

He's like, "I hate evil."

So if you applaud evil, you and God gotta have a conversation It's the reverence of God, the holiness of God that you and I will sit in and goes, "Ooh, man, if that messes with God heart, that's gonna mess with mine too."

Proverbs 9:10 says, "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding."

Proverbs 10:27 says, "The fear of the Lord prolongs days."

Y'all see that right there? The fear of the Lord prolongs days Let that set in.

The fear of the Lord, the reverence of God prolongs days, but the years of the wicked shorten.

Proverbs 14:26, "In the fear of the Lord, there is strong confidence, and His children will have a place of refuge in the fear of the Lord."

Proverbs 15:16 says, "Better is a little with the fear of the Lord than great treasure with trouble."

Are y'all getting what I'm trying to put out? The Word of God is full with God saying, "If you will stand in awe of me, I will pour out on you things that you have yet to discover."

For all aspects of your life.

I love this one, I love this one.

Pro- Psalms 25:14 says, "The secret of the Lord..."

Psalms 25:14

Y'all hear this? "The secret of the Lord is with those who fear Him, and He will show them His covenant."

The secret of the Lord is with those who fear Him.

Did y'all catch that? The Lord's like, "I can't tell this to nobody.

But the one that fears me, come here, come here, come here."

It reminded me of a verse in the New Testament in 1 Corinthians 2:9.

1 Corinthians 2:9

"But as it is written, 'Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor, nor entered into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for those who love Him.'"

Watch now.

"But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit."

So if m- if I am living in the fear of the Lord, the Lord's like, "I got some things that I can't share with everybody 'cause their faith has faded.

They're not focused on me.

Their faith has become cynical.

But come here, come here, let me tell you this.

This is my heart for you."

Man, I'm excited.

I don't know if y'all are excited as me Listen, the writers of Psalms, the writers of Proverbs, the writer of Corinthians they're all testifying of their personal experience with a holy God They're writing from experience.

We get the benefit of scripture, but they lived through these moments So write this down.

And worship team, you can come on up.

We're We're at our end.

Write this down.

If faith is required to please God, then my faith has to be rooted, watch now, in His holiness.

If my faith is going to please Him, and if I'm gonna come to Him, then it's gonna have to be rooted in the fact that He's holy.

Which then means I'm not chasing after His hands.

I already know that He can provide.

I already know His heart for me.

I already know that He wants to heal me.

I already know that He wants to give me peace.

I already know that He wants to, to be a sustainer and, uh, and, and, and help me grow and, and not have to deal with that issue or that sin.

So when I'm approaching Him, I'm literally approaching Him from relationship By faith Enoch was able to be looked at and say he pleased God.

By faith, the elders obtained a good report.

We don't, we don't read anything about, uh, they got houses and cars.

It was all by faith that they were able to walk out the promise.

And then when you read the end, it was like it was by faith that some of them didn't even see the promise, but they knew that He was faithful, but their focus was on eternity.

That's right.

Oh.

That's right.

So you mean to tell me that if I don't get what I ask God for, I really am not focused on that.

Yeah.

I'm focusing on you So my faith is gonna be rooted in His holiness, which then means that when I'm approaching Him, I know that He is, and I know that He will respond.

But I'm just coming for you.

And the thing that I lay before you, that's what you placed on my heart to discuss with you.

Y'all good? Like, because I'm spending time with you, and I recognize how big you are, and you're revealing yourself to me, when I come to you and I'm bringing to you XYZ, the Word has already revealed it to me.

So I just bring it back to you.

So my relationship is not on a need basis.

It's just that I desire you So if our faith is gonna be rooted, we have to have a definition of faith Hebrews 11 says that it's without faith, and then it says it is now faith, and it says it is by faith.

Here's the definition of faith.

It means, it comes from the Greek word pistis, and it means conviction of the truth of anything, belief.

In the New Testament, it's a conviction and belief respecting man's relationship to God and divine things.

Generally, with the included idea of trust, and watch now, holy fervor born of faith and joined with it.

Relating to God, faith is the conviction that God exists and is the creator and ruler of all things, the provider and bestower of eternal salvation through Jesus Christ.

Relating to Christ Jesus, faith is a strong and welcome conviction or belief that Jesus is the Messiah, through whom we obtain eternal salvation in the Kingdom of God.

And those of us that are Christ followers, it's the predominant idea, whether in Christ or God, that all of our faith springs from them Like when we root ourselves in faith, we're rooting it in His holiness.

We're rooting it in the fact that He is simply So write this down.

And then Ty, I'll have you come up and Write this down.

A faith that pleases God will know who He is and will know Him Faith that pleases God Knows who he is and knows him Remember, everything begins in the spiritual first.

So we will spend the, our time with the Father spiritually, and then we'll wa- watch God move in the natural.

It all begins in the spiritual, and watch God move in the natural.

Y'all, I was doing a study on faith, and I realized, watch this, that the faith that we're talking about in Hebrews, it's the same faith that we discover in Matthew chapter 8.

There is a centurion that comes to Jesus who has a servant that is ill.

And he gets to Jesus, and he's like, "Jesus, my servant is ill."

And watch now.

Jesus says, "I will come with you."

The c- the centurion says, "Listen, I'm a man under authority.

You don't need to come to my house.

Just speak the word, and my servant will be made whole."

Jesus...

This is what the Bible says.

Jesus said, "What? I don't have to go? I'll just declare the word?" Absolutely.

Jesus says, "I haven't seen such level of faith.

Trust in me, that I am who you've heard me to be, that God is the sustainer and the bestower of all things, that freedom and salvation flows through his hands.

You mean to tell me that that's your level of faith? So when you approached me, you brought my holiness with you.

So therefore, your servant's healed.

Your servant's healed."

All throughout scripture, we see faith that pleases God, which leads me to the last few things.

A fa- a faith that pleases God is gonna be rooted in him, and knowing him, write this down, knowing him is gonna equip you.
