  1. If you would please take your Bibles and turn them to Matthew chapter 5.

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  2. What's known as the first missionary discourse in the Gospel of Matthew.

  3. And Pastor James has walked through this chapter with you so far.

  4. And we are this evening at the end of this chapter.

  5. And we look forward to what God has to say to us this evening through his word.

  6. Let me read these verses before we pray and ask for God's help.

  7. This is God's word. Matthew chapter 10 verses 32 onwards.

    Matthew 10:32

  8. Whoever acknowledges me before others, I will also acknowledge before my Father in heaven.

  9. But whoever disowns me before others, I will disown before my Father in heaven.

  10. Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth.

  11. I did not come to bring peace but a sword.

  12. For I have come to turn a man against his father.

  13. A daughter against a mother.

  14. A daughter-in-law against a mother-in-law.

  15. A man's enemies will be the members of his own household.

  16. Anyone who loves their father or mother more than me is not worthy of me.

  17. Anyone who loves their son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.

  18. Whoever does not take up their cross and follow me is not worthy of me.

  19. Whoever finds their life will lose it.

  20. Whoever loses their life for my sake will find it.

  21. Anyone who welcomes you welcomes me.

  22. And anyone who welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me.

  23. Whoever welcomes a prophet as a prophet will receive a prophet's reward.

  24. And whoever welcomes a righteous person as a righteous person will receive a righteous person's reward.

  25. And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones who is my disciple,

  26. truly I tell you that person will certainly not lose their reward.

  27. The grass withers, the flowers fade, but the word of our God lasts forever.

  28. Let us pray.

  29. Amen.

  30. Dear God, we ask for your help this evening.

  31. We ask that the same Holy Spirit who inspired these words centuries ago would speak to us from his word.

  32. We pray, O God, that he would teach us what it means to be a disciple.

  33. That he would teach us to put our faith into action.

  34. Amen.

  35. We ask, O God, that he would take these truths and plant them deep in our hearts.

  36. Even the hard truths that we are sometimes reluctant to hear, would you soften our hearts to receive them.

  37. We pray and ask all of these things in Jesus' name.

  38. Amen.

  39. Amen.

  40. In these few verses, in these 12 verses, Jesus has a few things in mind.

  41. He wants us to profess him before the world.

  42. He wants us to prize him before every earthly bond.

  43. He wants us to live a life of paradox.

  44. And he wants us to live it to win the prize.

  45. So if I could summarize what we just read, I would say what I said just now again.

  46. Jesus calls his disciples to profess him before the world.

  47. Prize him before every earthly bond.

  48. Live a life of paradox.

  49. And live that life to win the prize.

  50. Those will be our four points this evening.

  51. Profess Christ.

  52. Prize Christ.

  53. Live a life of paradox.

  54. And fourthly, live that life to win the prize.

  55. Profess him.

  56. Prize him.

  57. Live a life of paradox.

  58. Live that life to win the prize.

  59. In verses 32 and 33, Jesus reminds us that we need to profess him.

  60. You remember that Jesus is calling his disciples, his 12 disciples.

  61. In the beginning of the chapter, we read that Jesus called his 12 disciples to him and gave them authority to drive out impure spirits and to heal every disease and illness.

  62. Have you ever asked yourself the question?

  63. Have you ever asked yourself the question, why 12?

  64. Why 12 disciples?

  65. I think Jesus is calling 12 disciples particularly because he is remaking Israel.

  66. Israel had 12 tribes.

  67. So, here Jesus is reconstituting, remaking Israel in his image.

  68. And he is calling 12 apostles, 12 disciples to carry that message forward from Jerusalem, from within the Jews first and then to the rest of the earth.

  69. So, you may read these verses, these 12 verses and say, maybe that message, that call to profess Christ, to prize him, to live a life of paradox and to live it to win the prize is for those 12 people.

  70. But I think, by extension, those principles apply to us, even this very evening.

  71. And so, he reminds us in verses 32 and 33 that we ought to profess Christ.

  72. So, Jesus says this in verse 32, whoever acknowledges me before others, I will also acknowledge me, acknowledge before my Father in heaven.

  73. In the ESV, right before this verse starts, there is a so, there is a therefore.

  74. And that is actually hinting at what has come before this text.

  75. And you remember that in the verses prior, in verses 29 and 31, for example, Jesus is reminding the disciples of his providential care of every single detail in the universe.

  76. So, in verse 29, we read this.

  77. Verse 30,

  78. And even the very hairs of your heads are all numbered.

  79. So, do not be afraid.

  80. You are worth more than many sparrows.

  81. Jesus is reminding his disciples, his 12 disciples, of the providential overruling of his universe.

  82. God rules the universe.

  83. There is no maverick molecule in the universe.

  84. Everything happens according to God's plan.

  85. There is nothing out of order in God's economy.

  86. And God, in the person of Jesus Christ, is reminding us this evening to actually think of that providential care of God's people.

  87. And out of that security, profess him.

  88. What is provident, you may ask?

  89. And in our Westminster Confession of Faith, in chapter 5, paragraph 1, we are told this.

  90. This is how it reads.

  91. God, the creator of all things, does uphold, direct, dispose, and govern all creatures, actions, and things, from the greatest even to the least, by his most wise and holy providence,

  92. according to his infallible knowledge, and the free and immutable counsel of his will, to the praise of the glory of his own wisdom, power, justice, goodness, and mercy.

  93. And in paragraph 7, we are told that this providence of God takes care of all creation, but especially God has a care for his church.

  94. So we read there that God's providence takes care of all creation, but he cares for his church in a very special way, and works everything for her good.

  95. So the soul there that is missing in your NIVs, which is present in the Greek and in the ESV, is actually pointing to God's providential care.

  96. And as you are reminded of God's providential care, now you are motivated to profess Christ.

  97. You have a security from which to confess Christ, to acknowledge him before all men.

  98. Do you know Christ?

  99. You have to know Christ in order to proclaim Christ.

  100. Just in the Gospel of Matthew, we are told many things about the Lord Jesus Christ.

  101. You remember the very first verse, chapter 1 of Matthew, says Jesus is the Messiah, the son of David, the son of Abraham.

  102. He is truly man.

  103. He was conceived by the Holy Spirit.

  104. He was born of a virgin.

  105. He will save his people from their sins.

  106. He will be called Emmanuel, God with us.

  107. Or you go to chapter 5 and you hear about Jesus Christ as the new Moses who goes up on a mountain to give a clearer, clearer exposition of God's law.

  108. I have not come to abolish the law and the prophets.

  109. I have come to fulfill them, Jesus says.

  110. And he says, if you harbor hate against your brother, you have committed murder in your heart.

  111. Do you know that Jesus who proclaimed that and gave that exposition of God's law?

  112. Or you could go to chapters 8 through 10 and you can read the nine miracle stories.

  113. The story of the woman who had been bleeding for 12 years.

  114. And he says, take care, daughter.

  115. And Jesus demonstrates his power to show that the miracles he is performing are a picture of the kingdom to come.

  116. Where in that kingdom the blind will see, the deaf will hear, the mute will speak, the lame will leap for joy.

  117. You could go to chapter 11, the next chapter, and you could read Jesus' own invitation.

  118. Where he says, come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

  119. Or you could go to chapter 13 and read the parables, the stories about the coming kingdom.

  120. Where we are told that Jesus is the sower who sows the seeds.

  121. And he is the king who has brought his kingdom.

  122. You could go on and on.

  123. That's just half of the book of Matthew.

  124. You can know Christ by going to his word.

  125. Do you know Christ?

  126. You must know him as these things and more in order to confess him.

  127. Do you know about his two natures?

  128. He is truly God, truly man.

  129. Do you know Jesus Christ as Savior?

  130. Do you know him as King?

  131. Do you know that he came to seek and save the lost?

  132. Do you know him as the King of kings and the Lord of lords?

  133. Do you know Jesus Christ in his suffering?

  134. He was a man of sorrows.

  135. He was acquainted with grief.

  136. Do you know Jesus Christ in his glory?

  137. As risen from the grave.

  138. Do you know him as seated in the heavenly places advocating for you?

  139. Do you know him as your high priest?

  140. Do you know him as your living and reigning and returning king?

  141. Do you know him as the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end of all history and all creation?

  142. Do you see him in the scriptures?

  143. Do you see him in the Old Testament?

  144. Do you see him as the center of all the scriptures?

  145. When you know Jesus Christ in these ways, you begin to know the outskirts of who he is.

  146. And as you know him in these ways, you learn that as you know him, you are indeed known by him.

  147. As you are known by him, you realize that he is closer to you than you are to yourself.

  148. And in that knowledge, though adversity comes, though there is oppression and there is persecution,

  149. you learn to confess him.

  150. You learn to confess him.

  151. You claim him as your savior.

  152. And you share the gospel with those who are lost.

  153. You remember the story of Polycop from the second century, the bishop of Smyrna.

  154. He was a disciple of the apostle John.

  155. He had served the church for a long, long time.

  156. And at the end of his ministry, he was dragged into a Roman festival before the Roman proconsul.

  157. And they urged him to swear by Caesar and curse Christ.

  158. He is 86 years old.

  159. Do you remember how he replied?

  160. Do you?

  161. This is what he said.

  162. He says, 86 years have I served Christ.

  163. And he has done me no wrong.

  164. How then can I blaspheme my king and my savior?

  165. You may not be dragged in front of the Roman high courts today.

  166. Maybe you'd be dragged to the parliaments, to the police stations here in Scotland for proclaiming the message of the gospel of repentance.

  167. But do you profess Christ?

  168. Do you confess him by words?

  169. Nobody becomes a believer by you bringing them a bowl of soup.

  170. Although that is wonderful.

  171. Although we should adorn the gospel with good deeds.

  172. But you have to speak up.

  173. You have to use words.

  174. Jesus who created the gospel of Jesus.

  175. Jesus who created the world.

  176. Who is in charge of every molecule in all creation.

  177. Who is in charge of your life.

  178. The parts of your body.

  179. He is working all things for good.

  180. So that not one of your hair can fall on the ground without his permission.

  181. He cares for you.

  182. He knows every detail about you.

  183. And he asks you to be bold.

  184. He asks you to be bold.

  185. But if you deny him before men, Jesus says,

  186. who at worst can only kill the body,

  187. he will deny you before his father in heaven.

  188. A bold call.

  189. A hard word.

  190. But here is the call to profess Christ.

  191. The call to profess Christ.

  192. Do you profess Christ in all the spheres that you are involved in?

  193. The next call is to prize Christ.

  194. If you think this is a hard word,

  195. the next call is a harder word.

  196. So profess Christ in verses 32 and 33.

  197. That's our first point.

  198. Our second point is prize Christ.

  199. 34 through 37.

  200. Verses 34 through 36.

  201. This is what he says.

  202. Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth.

  203. I did not come to bring peace but a sword.

  204. For I have come to turn a man against his father.

  205. A daughter against a mother.

  206. A daughter-in-law against a mother-in-law.

  207. A man's enemies will be the members of his own household.

  208. Does it seem contradictory to you?

  209. Does it sound contradictory to you?

  210. That Jesus would say that he has not come to bring peace?

  211. If you just do a survey of what the Old Testament has said,

  212. you remember the prophecy of Isaiah who says,

  213. he shall be named the Prince of Peace.

  214. Isaiah 9.6.

  215. You remember the angels foretelling Jesus' birth,

  216. and they say glory to God in the highest,

  217. and on earth peace and goodwill to men.

  218. Jesus himself in John 14 would say,

  219. peace I leave with you.

  220. My peace I give to you.

  221. Not as the world gives.

  222. Or after the resurrection,

  223. in John 20, he says,

  224. peace be with you.

  225. As the Father has sent me,

  226. so I am sending you.

  227. And he calls us to be peacemakers, doesn't he?

  228. He says, blessed are the peacemakers,

  229. for they shall be called the sons of God.

  230. Or in Romans 12.18,

  231. live peaceably among all men,

  232. as far as it depends on you.

  233. And the apostles called Jesus peace.

  234. In Ephesians 2.14 and 17,

  235. we are told that he is our peace.

  236. He came and preached peace to those who are far off.

  237. In 1 Thessalonians, he says,

  238. now may the Lord of peace sanctify you completely.

  239. 2 Thessalonians 3,

  240. now may the Lord of peace give you peace at all times.

  241. Is Jesus contradicting himself?

  242. I don't think so.

  243. I think the answer to that question is in verse 37.

  244. In verse 37,

  245. he gives us that answer.

  246. He says,

  247. anyone who loves their father or mother,

  248. is father or mother more than me,

  249. is not worthy of me.

  250. Anyone who loves their son or daughter more than me,

  251. is not worthy of me.

  252. In other words,

  253. Jesus did not come to bring disruption to your family.

  254. Jesus did come to rightly order your loves.

  255. He wants you to prize him above all earthly bonds.

  256. Do you prize Jesus Christ?

  257. It means that as you profess Christ,

  258. there will be a position in your families.

  259. And more than not,

  260. it actually comes from people who are closest to you,

  261. people who know you.

  262. It means to prize Christ,

  263. there will be a position.

  264. As you love him,

  265. and as you love his law,

  266. you will have to make decisions

  267. between choosing him

  268. or choosing to compromise.

  269. It may look different in different families,

  270. but the crux is this.

  271. Your loves have to be rightly ordered.

  272. You have to love the Lord your God,

  273. the Lord Jesus Christ,

  274. with your heart, soul, strength, and mind.

  275. And there's also another truth.

  276. There is a dividing line

  277. that runs through human history

  278. from the very beginning,

  279. from the beginning of the Bible.

  280. We are told that

  281. there are two lines of humanity

  282. that are characterized by two loves.

  283. One line is characterized by love for God,

  284. and the other line is characterized by love for self.

  285. You see this division from the very beginning.

  286. You remember the division

  287. between the seed of the serpent

  288. and the seed of the woman

  289. in Genesis 3.

  290. Or you remember the distinction

  291. between the seed of Cain

  292. and the seed of Abel

  293. and then Seth in Genesis 4 and Genesis 5.

  294. That line runs through

  295. every period of history,

  296. every empire,

  297. and sadly in every family.

  298. Jesus here wants our utmost loyalty.

  299. He wants us to prize him

  300. above all earthly bonds.

  301. Do not make idols

  302. of your family relationships

  303. at the expense of worshipping the true God,

  304. the Lord Jesus Christ.

  305. He is a jealous God, you see.

  306. He is a jealous God.

  307. In the words of the Scottish Puritan,

  308. Samuel Rutherford,

  309. set not your hearts

  310. on the flowers of this world.

  311. They shall fade and die.

  312. Prize the rose of Sharon

  313. and the lily of the valley,

  314. for he changes not.

  315. Prize Christ.

  316. Prize the rose of Sharon.

  317. Prize Christ the maker,

  318. the redeemer,

  319. the friend,

  320. the high priest.

  321. He changes not.

  322. Or in the words of the psalmist

  323. in Psalm 45,

  324. Jesus is the most handsome

  325. of all the sons of men.

  326. O beloved church of God,

  327. he is your betrothed.

  328. You are bound to marry him.

  329. You are his bride.

  330. He loved you

  331. before the stars were made.

  332. He emptied himself

  333. by becoming like you.

  334. He gave himself to pursue you.

  335. He ransomed your soul

  336. on the day that he died.

  337. He demands your love.

  338. Of 10,000 strong,

  339. he is the fairest in heaven

  340. and on earth.

  341. Cherish him,

  342. treasure him,

  343. and prize him.

  344. Psalm 45, verse 10.

    Psalms 45:10

  345. Listen, O daughter,

  346. and pay careful attention.

  347. Forget your people

  348. and your father's house.

  349. Let the king be enthralled

  350. by your beauty.

  351. Honor him.

  352. For he is your Lord.

  353. Profess him,

  354. prize him.

  355. And thirdly,

  356. live by paradox.

  357. How do you prize Christ?

  358. One of the ways you can do

  359. is to live by paradox.

  360. That is our third point this evening.

  361. Live by paradox.

  362. Verses 38 and 39.

  363. In verse 38 and 39,

  364. Jesus says this,

  365. whoever does not take up their cross

  366. and follow me

  367. is not worthy of me.

  368. Whoever finds their life

  369. will lose it.

  370. And whoever loses their life

  371. for my sake

  372. will find it.

  373. You see the parallels

  374. in verses

  375. where he says,

  376. anyone who loves their son

  377. or daughter

  378. more than me

  379. is not worthy of me.

  380. And he repeats the same

  381. in verse 38.

  382. Whoever does not take up their cross

  383. and follow me

  384. is not worthy of me.

  385. What does that mean?

  386. It means

  387. that we are called

  388. to imitate

  389. the Lord Jesus Christ.

  390. One theologian said,

  391. imitation of Christ

  392. is the heart

  393. of the spiritual life.

  394. imitation of Christ

  395. is the heart

  396. of the spiritual life.

  397. For some

  398. from some

  399. for some disciples

  400. who are called

  401. in this very passage,

  402. imitating Christ

  403. actually meant

  404. dying

  405. as Jesus did.

  406. They professed Christ,

  407. they prized Christ,

  408. and they were

  409. crucified for it.

  410. You remember

  411. the story

  412. of Peter

  413. gathered from

  414. tradition,

  415. early Christian tradition

  416. that he was

  417. crucified upside down

  418. in Rome.

  419. And he requested

  420. to be

  421. crucified upside down

  422. because he felt

  423. unworthy to die

  424. in the same way

  425. that Jesus died,

  426. the right side up.

  427. Oh, Andrew,

  428. Peter's brother,

  429. who was crucified

  430. on an X-shaped

  431. cross

  432. in Greece.

  433. He was

  434. bound to the cross

  435. and the legend

  436. goes

  437. that he preached

  438. for two days

  439. before dying.

  440. Crucifixion

  441. was a slow death,

  442. you remember.

  443. Oh, Philip.

  444. They say that

  445. they crucified

  446. his head first

  447. in modern day

  448. Turkey.

  449. So, Nathaniel

  450. was flayed

  451. alive

  452. and then crucified

  453. in Armenia.

  454. For those disciples,

  455. that's what it meant,

  456. but what does it mean

  457. for us now?

  458. Does it mean

  459. that we carry

  460. physical

  461. wooden crosses

  462. and start

  463. mimicking

  464. the historical

  465. actions of Jesus?

  466. Does it mean

  467. that we put

  468. on a shore?

  469. If you look

  470. at church history,

  471. you'll find

  472. that certain

  473. monastic traditions

  474. and mystical

  475. traditions,

  476. they actually

  477. attempted

  478. to replicate

  479. and reenact

  480. the crucifixion.

  481. And they

  482. found it

  483. to be meritorious.

  484. They found it

  485. to bring

  486. the merit

  487. before God.

  488. But

  489. carrying the cross,

  490. taking on the cross

  491. and following Jesus

  492. is not really

  493. a costume

  494. to wear,

  495. is it?

  496. It is a way

  497. of life.

  498. It means

  499. sharing

  500. in the suffering

  501. of Christ.

  502. It means

  503. a life

  504. of self-denial

  505. and a life

  506. of self-forgetfulness.

  507. It means

  508. active obedience

  509. to God,

  510. doing God's will

  511. within

  512. specific circumstances,

  513. the modern

  514. callings

  515. that He

  516. has called

  517. us to.

  518. It means

  519. that if you're

  520. working in

  521. government,

  522. you follow

  523. Jesus Christ

  524. and His law

  525. to the very end.

  526. If you work

  527. in industry,

  528. business,

  529. wherever you

  530. work,

  531. you live

  532. with a

  533. willingness

  534. to forfeit

  535. everything,

  536. wealth,

  537. worldly pleasures,

  538. family ties,

  539. even your own

  540. life for the

  541. sake of Christ.

  542. But it also

  543. involves

  544. a tearing

  545. down.

  546. You have to

  547. say no

  548. to yourself.

  549. There's self-denial,

  550. isn't it?

  551. You have to say

  552. no to

  553. your sinful

  554. self

  555. and you have

  556. to be willing

  557. to endure

  558. hardship.

  559. And more

  560. often than not,

  561. it means

  562. being okay.

  563. with being

  564. called a

  565. bigot

  566. or an

  567. unloving

  568. person

  569. for your

  570. views on

  571. Christian

  572. teachings,

  573. on sexuality

  574. and marriage.

  575. It means

  576. professing

  577. Christ

  578. and prizing

  579. Christ

  580. and not

  581. giving in

  582. to self-protecting

  583. fear.

  584. It means

  585. learning

  586. to live

  587. by

  588. paradox.

  589. Verse 39,

  590. whoever

  591. finds

  592. their

  593. life

  594. will

  595. lose

  596. it.

  597. And whoever

  598. loses

  599. their

  600. life

  601. for my

  602. sake

  603. will

  604. find

  605. it.

  606. If you

  607. try to

  608. grasp

  609. onto

  610. life,

  611. you try

  612. to hold

  613. on to

  614. life and

  615. your possessions,

  616. you will

  617. lose it.

  618. It's paradoxical.

  619. But if you

  620. lose your

  621. life for

  622. my sake,

  623. for Jesus'

  624. sake,

  625. and the

  626. gospel,

  627. you will

  628. find it.

  629. it means

  630. looking at

  631. your world

  632. through the

  633. lens of

  634. the cross,

  635. looking at

  636. the world

  637. the right

  638. side up,

  639. which is

  640. the upside

  641. down way

  642. of how

  643. people usually

  644. look at the

  645. world.

  646. It means

  647. to

  648. see everything

  649. through the

  650. lens of the

  651. cross.

  652. as the

  653. first prayer

  654. in the

  655. book called

  656. The Valley

  657. of Vision.

  658. It is to

  659. realize that

  660. the way

  661. down is

  662. the way

  663. up.

  664. It is to

  665. realize that

  666. the way

  667. to be low

  668. is to be

  669. high.

  670. It is to

  671. know that

  672. the broken

  673. heart is

  674. the healed

  675. heart.

  676. It is to

  677. know that

  678. the contrite

  679. spirit is

  680. the rejoicing

  681. spirit.

  682. That the

  683. repenting

  684. spirit is

  685. the victorious

  686. soul.

  687. It is to

  688. know that

  689. to have

  690. nothing

  691. is to

  692. possess

  693. everything.

  694. It is to

  695. know that

  696. to bear

  697. the cross

  698. is to

  699. wear the

  700. crown.

  701. It is

  702. to realize

  703. that when

  704. the night

  705. is the

  706. darkest,

  707. that's

  708. when

  709. stars

  710. shine

  711. the

  712. brightest.

  713. Do you

  714. live

  715. by the

  716. way of

  717. the cross?

  718. Does your

  719. life take

  720. the way

  721. of the

  722. cross?

  723. Do you

  724. see your

  725. life through

  726. the lens

  727. of the

  728. cross?

  729. Maybe when

  730. you were

  731. young,

  732. when you

  733. were first

  734. converted,

  735. you heard

  736. the scandalous

  737. message of the

  738. gospel and

  739. you were

  740. moved.

  741. But over

  742. time,

  743. you've

  744. kind of

  745. lost that.

  746. But

  747. have you

  748. lost the

  749. edge of

  750. your Christian

  751. life?

  752. Christian

  753. life is

  754. a life

  755. that is

  756. marked by

  757. paradox.

  758. Profess

  759. Christ,

  760. price

  761. Christ,

  762. and live

  763. by paradox.

  764. And

  765. fourthly,

  766. and lastly,

  767. live it

  768. to win

  769. the prize.

  770. Live it

  771. to win

  772. the prize

  773. in verses

  774. 40 and

  775. 42.

  776. Anyone

  777. who

  778. welcomes

  779. you,

  780. Jesus

  781. says,

  782. welcomes

  783. me.

  784. And

  785. anyone

  786. who

  787. welcomes

  788. me,

  789. welcomes

  790. the one

  791. who sent

  792. me.

  793. Whoever

  794. welcomes

  795. a prophet

  796. as a

  797. prophet

  798. will

  799. receive a

  800. prophet's

  801. reward.

  802. And

  803. whoever

  804. welcomes

  805. a person

  806. as a

  807. righteous

  808. person

  809. will

  810. receive

  811. a

  812. righteous

  813. person's

  814. reward.

  815. And

  816. if anyone

  817. gives

  818. even a

  819. cup of

  820. cold water

  821. to one

  822. of these

  823. little

  824. ones,

  825. who is

  826. my

  827. disciple,

  828. truly,

  829. I tell

  830. you,

  831. that person

  832. will

  833. certainly

  834. not

  835. lose

  836. their

  837. reward.

  838. You

  839. remember

  840. the stories

  841. of people

  842. receiving

  843. prophets.

  844. You

  845. remember

  846. the story

  847. of Elijah

  848. who was

  849. received

  850. by the

  851. widow

  852. of

  853. Zarephath

  854. in

  855. 1 Kings

  856. 17.

  857. And

  858. the story

  859. of Elisha,

  860. Elijah's

  861. disciple,

  862. who was

  863. received

  864. by the

  865. Shunammite

  866. woman

  867. both

  868. women

  869. had

  870. lost

  871. their

  872. sons.

  873. And

  874. they

  875. were

  876. hospitable

  877. to Elijah

  878. and Elisha

  879. and they

  880. received

  881. their

  882. reward.

  883. They

  884. received

  885. their

  886. sons

  887. back.

  888. But

  889. who

  890. else

  891. also

  892. received

  893. their

  894. reward?

  895. It's not

  896. just the

  897. prophet,

  898. but it's

  899. also the

  900. ones who

  901. received

  902. them,

  903. the women.

  904. They

  905. received

  906. their

  907. rewards,

  908. Jesus

  909. says.

  910. Jesus

  911. is making

  912. a distinction

  913. between

  914. the prophets

  915. and the

  916. ones who

  917. received

  918. those

  919. prophets.

  920. In

  921. modern

  922. parlance,

  923. he is

  924. making a

  925. distinction

  926. between

  927. what we

  928. call

  929. goers

  930. and

  931. senders.

  932. Goers

  933. are the

  934. ones who

  935. say

  936. that I'm

  937. going to go

  938. to the

  939. mission field

  940. and I'm

  941. going to

  942. preach the

  943. gospel to

  944. unreached

  945. people

  946. groups.

  947. And

  948. senders

  949. are the

  950. ones who

  951. host

  952. people,

  953. give them

  954. hospitality,

  955. support the

  956. work abroad

  957. with

  958. resources.

  959. So goers

  960. and senders,

  961. and Jesus

  962. says,

  963. regardless of

  964. what you're

  965. called to,

  966. it'll be one of

  967. those two

  968. things.

  969. You are

  970. either a

  971. goer,

  972. someone who

  973. goes to

  974. proclaim

  975. the gospel,

  976. or you're

  977. a sender,

  978. you will

  979. receive the

  980. same reward.

  981. What a

  982. scandalous

  983. message is

  984. that?

  985. It means

  986. that missionaries

  987. are really

  988. not upper

  989. class citizens

  990. in God's

  991. economy.

  992. Pastors are

  993. not upper

  994. class citizens

  995. in God's

  996. economy.

  997. The one

  998. who goes

  999. and plants,

  1000. he receives

  1001. the reward,

  1002. and the one

  1003. who shows

  1004. hospitality and

  1005. supports that

  1006. work,

  1007. they receive

  1008. the same

  1009. reward.

  1010. Do you

  1011. actively

  1012. partake in

  1013. God's

  1014. mission?

  1015. Do you

  1016. give to

  1017. the church?

  1018. Ralph

  1019. Winter,

  1020. an American

  1021. missiologist,

  1022. he talked

  1023. about

  1024. wartime

  1025. living,

  1026. wartime

  1027. living,

  1028. and you're

  1029. probably

  1030. familiar with

  1031. that.

  1032. During the

  1033. World War

  1034. II,

  1035. you probably

  1036. know better

  1037. than I do.

  1038. You come

  1039. from Sri

  1040. Lanka,

  1041. you made

  1042. sacrifices

  1043. to fight

  1044. that war.

  1045. You know

  1046. the Clydeside

  1047. shipbuilders.

  1048. You remember

  1049. the factories

  1050. that pivoted

  1051. from manufacturing

  1052. civilian luxury

  1053. items to

  1054. building trains

  1055. and tanks

  1056. and ships.

  1057. You remember

  1058. wartime

  1059. rationing,

  1060. people

  1061. voluntarily

  1062. giving up

  1063. sugar and

  1064. meat

  1065. and petrol

  1066. and other

  1067. resources,

  1068. all kinds

  1069. of resources

  1070. so that they

  1071. could be

  1072. forwarded to

  1073. the front

  1074. lines.

  1075. Maybe you

  1076. remember

  1077. stories about

  1078. the dig

  1079. for victory

  1080. or maybe you

  1081. heard it from

  1082. your parents

  1083. or your

  1084. grandparents.

  1085. Campaigns to

  1086. grow vegetables

  1087. in your backyard,

  1088. in your front

  1089. garden,

  1090. so that

  1091. resources can be

  1092. allocated to the

  1093. front.

  1094. wartime

  1095. living really

  1096. means shifting

  1097. priorities.

  1098. Do you

  1099. live a life

  1100. that is

  1101. luxurious,

  1102. that is

  1103. self-centered,

  1104. that is

  1105. self-loving?

  1106. Do you live

  1107. for this world

  1108. or do you

  1109. make your

  1110. priorities

  1111. centered on

  1112. the coming

  1113. kingdom?

  1114. Do you

  1115. view your

  1116. money,

  1117. your time,

  1118. your careers

  1119. as a means

  1120. for personal

  1121. comfort or

  1122. peacetime

  1123. pursuits?

  1124. If you

  1125. have the

  1126. attitude of

  1127. a wartime

  1128. living,

  1129. then you

  1130. would have

  1131. simpler budgets,

  1132. frugal living,

  1133. live more

  1134. sacrificially,

  1135. live more

  1136. driven by the

  1137. mission of the

  1138. church.

  1139. Your lifestyle

  1140. would be

  1141. reallocated,

  1142. your resources,

  1143. your time.

  1144. You would

  1145. focus on the

  1146. work of the

  1147. church.

  1148. Has your

  1149. life been

  1150. retooled for

  1151. God's purposes?

  1152. Or are you

  1153. still manufacturing

  1154. luxuries for

  1155. yourself?

  1156. The frontiers

  1157. of global

  1158. mission are

  1159. no longer

  1160. far, far

  1161. away in

  1162. the east

  1163. or in the

  1164. global south.

  1165. Some of them

  1166. are already

  1167. here.

  1168. The frontiers

  1169. are here,

  1170. whether you

  1171. like it or

  1172. not.

  1173. Globalization

  1174. has meant

  1175. that nations

  1176. have come

  1177. to our

  1178. doorsteps.

  1179. In

  1180. Edinburgh,

  1181. there are

  1182. about 24%

  1183. of Edinburgh's

  1184. population

  1185. have come

  1186. from 170

  1187. different

  1188. countries.

  1189. 170

  1190. different

  1191. countries.

  1192. 24% of

  1193. Edinburgh.

  1194. But how

  1195. about the

  1196. remaining

  1197. British people?

  1198. 76%

  1199. of British

  1200. people live

  1201. in Edinburgh

  1202. and only

  1203. about 2%

  1204. of them

  1205. are church

  1206. going

  1207. believers,

  1208. evangelicals.

  1209. So the

  1210. frontiers are

  1211. here.

  1212. How do you

  1213. support the

  1214. work of your

  1215. church?

  1216. How do you

  1217. support the

  1218. work of

  1219. Buklu?

  1220. How do you

  1221. support the

  1222. pastor, the

  1223. elders, the

  1224. deacons, the

  1225. musicians, the

  1226. volunteers?

  1227. Do you

  1228. take away

  1229. from their

  1230. work or do

  1231. you add to

  1232. it?

  1233. Do you

  1234. give to your

  1235. church so

  1236. God's work

  1237. can be

  1238. supported here

  1239. in Edinburgh

  1240. or do you

  1241. hold

  1242. resources for

  1243. yourself?

  1244. Jesus says

  1245. that there is

  1246. a reward.

  1247. There is a

  1248. reward.

  1249. And in one

  1250. sense, the

  1251. reward is

  1252. described to

  1253. us in verse

  1254. 14.

  1255. Jesus says

  1256. anyone who

  1257. welcomes you

  1258. welcomes me.

  1259. and anyone

  1260. who welcomes

  1261. me welcomes

  1262. the one who

  1263. sent me.

  1264. So in one

  1265. sense, the

  1266. reward as you

  1267. labor for the

  1268. sake of the

  1269. church is that

  1270. you get the

  1271. Lord Jesus

  1272. Christ.

  1273. And once you

  1274. get the Lord

  1275. Jesus Christ,

  1276. you get God

  1277. the Father.

  1278. That is a

  1279. reward.

  1280. That is the

  1281. highest reward

  1282. anyone can

  1283. get.

  1284. It's to

  1285. receive God

  1286. as their

  1287. ultimate

  1288. price.

  1289. But there

  1290. is also

  1291. reward in

  1292. another sense

  1293. that we

  1294. don't like

  1295. hearing about.

  1296. And that

  1297. is that

  1298. implicit in

  1299. these texts

  1300. is the

  1301. idea that

  1302. there is a

  1303. thing that's

  1304. called the

  1305. prophet's

  1306. reward.

  1307. And that's

  1308. different from

  1309. other rewards.

  1310. rewards.

  1311. And in

  1312. fact, the

  1313. Bible talks

  1314. much about

  1315. rewards.

  1316. In 1 Corinthians

  1317. 3.8, every

  1318. man shall

  1319. receive his

  1320. own reward

  1321. according to

  1322. his own

  1323. labor.

  1324. Or in

  1325. Luke 19, the

  1326. story, and

  1327. Jesus says,

  1328. you shall have

  1329. power over

  1330. ten cities, and

  1331. you shall have

  1332. power over

  1333. five cities.

  1334. Faithful

  1335. servants are

  1336. given authority

  1337. over different

  1338. numbers of

  1339. cities.

  1340. What does

  1341. that mean?

  1342. It means that

  1343. yes, we do

  1344. get our

  1345. reward in

  1346. God.

  1347. We get the

  1348. Lord Jesus

  1349. Christ.

  1350. He is our

  1351. treasure.

  1352. We get the

  1353. Father.

  1354. We get the

  1355. Spirit.

  1356. But our

  1357. capacity to

  1358. rejoice in

  1359. God would

  1360. differ in

  1361. heaven,

  1362. depending on

  1363. our labor,

  1364. depending on

  1365. what we do

  1366. with the gift

  1367. that we have

  1368. been given.

  1369. God has

  1370. given his

  1371. church gifts.

  1372. He has

  1373. given you

  1374. unique gifts.

  1375. Do you

  1376. put them

  1377. to good

  1378. use, or

  1379. do you

  1380. bury them?

  1381. Do you

  1382. bury your

  1383. talents?

  1384. In one

  1385. sense, I

  1386. think the

  1387. whole rewards

  1388. argument is

  1389. given to us

  1390. so that we

  1391. may actually

  1392. work, because

  1393. the scandal

  1394. of the

  1395. gospel is

  1396. that you

  1397. can never

  1398. earn a

  1399. place with

  1400. God.

  1401. And because

  1402. that is such

  1403. a scandal,

  1404. automatically

  1405. human beings

  1406. think that

  1407. everything is

  1408. equal.

  1409. And we

  1410. treat God

  1411. as if he

  1412. is the

  1413. equal

  1414. employment

  1415. opportunity

  1416. officer.

  1417. We

  1418. flatten the

  1419. teachings of

  1420. the scriptures.

  1421. So yes,

  1422. the scandal

  1423. of the

  1424. gospel is

  1425. that if

  1426. you put

  1427. your trust

  1428. in Jesus

  1429. Christ,

  1430. you will

  1431. get God.

  1432. God, but

  1433. you are

  1434. given gifts

  1435. in order

  1436. that you

  1437. may work

  1438. them for

  1439. the glory

  1440. and the

  1441. growth of

  1442. God's

  1443. kingdom.

  1444. I

  1445. shouldn't

  1446. flatten that.

  1447. Do you

  1448. live your

  1449. life to

  1450. win the

  1451. prize?

  1452. Do you

  1453. put your

  1454. talents to

  1455. good work?

  1456. God's

  1457. It's a

  1458. question we

  1459. have to

  1460. ask ourselves.

  1461. Do you

  1462. give these

  1463. little ones a

  1464. cup of

  1465. cold water?

  1466. Because they

  1467. are the

  1468. disciples of

  1469. the Lord

  1470. Jesus

  1471. Christ.

  1472. Do you

  1473. dig for

  1474. victory?

  1475. Polycarp

  1476. certainly

  1477. received

  1478. his reward.

  1479. The

  1480. Shunammite

  1481. woman who

  1482. took

  1483. Elisha

  1484. in

  1485. surely

  1486. received

  1487. her

  1488. reward.

  1489. Jesus

  1490. calls his

  1491. disciples to

  1492. profess him

  1493. before the

  1494. world and

  1495. prize him

  1496. above every

  1497. earthly bond.

  1498. He calls

  1499. us to live

  1500. a life of

  1501. paradox.

  1502. The way

  1503. down is the

  1504. way up.

  1505. And he

  1506. calls us

  1507. to live

  1508. that life,

  1509. that paradoxical

  1510. life, that

  1511. foolish life

  1512. to win

  1513. the prize.

  1514. May he

  1515. find us

  1516. faithful as

  1517. God does

  1518. his work

  1519. among us

  1520. here in

  1521. Bucklew and

  1522. Edinburgh.

  1523. May we

  1524. hear from

  1525. the Lord

  1526. Jesus Christ,

  1527. well done,

  1528. good and

  1529. faithful servant.

  1530. May we

  1531. run our

  1532. race to

  1533. win that

  1534. prize.

  1535. God's

  1536. word and

  1537. his

  1538. preaching

  1539. of it.

  1540. May God

  1541. add his

  1542. blessings to

  1543. it.

  1544. Let us

  1545. pray.

  1546. God, we

  1547. thank you

  1548. for your

  1549. words.

  1550. We thank

  1551. you for

  1552. these simple

  1553. truths we've

  1554. always known.

  1555. But we

  1556. know,

  1557. God, that

  1558. we need

  1559. fresh

  1560. reminders.

  1561. others.

  1562. So awaken

  1563. us to

  1564. these

  1565. realities,

  1566. show us

  1567. the state

  1568. we're in,

  1569. and give

  1570. us a sense

  1571. of what

  1572. you're doing

  1573. in the

  1574. world,

  1575. cause us

  1576. to have

  1577. that joy

  1578. of our

  1579. salvation

  1580. that we

  1581. had 20

  1582. years ago,

  1583. 50 years

  1584. ago,

  1585. when we

  1586. first

  1587. beheld

  1588. Christ in

  1589. his glory.

  1590. Help us

  1591. to live

  1592. our lives

  1593. faithfully,

  1594. help us

  1595. to live

  1596. not for

  1597. ourselves,

  1598. but for

  1599. the sake

  1600. of Jesus

  1601. Christ.

  1602. We commit

  1603. our weeks

  1604. into your

  1605. hand.

  1606. We ask

  1607. that you

  1608. would bless

  1609. us as

  1610. we go.

  1611. Would you

  1612. give us

  1613. safety as

  1614. we travel?

  1615. Would you

  1616. be with

  1617. our children?

  1618. We pray

  1619. for pregnant

  1620. mothers in

  1621. this room,

  1622. and those

  1623. who long

  1624. to be

  1625. pregnant.

  1626. We pray

  1627. for our

  1628. various needs.

  1629. We pray

  1630. for the

  1631. needs of

  1632. this church.

  1633. Would you

  1634. be glorified

  1635. in raising

  1636. young men

  1637. and young

  1638. women in

  1639. this church

  1640. who can

  1641. serve you

  1642. in the

  1643. hard places

  1644. and in

  1645. the hardest

  1646. place that

  1647. is our

  1648. front doors.

  1649. We pray

  1650. and ask

  1651. all of

  1652. these things

  1653. in the

  1654. name of

  1655. Lord Jesus

  1656. Christ.

  1657. Amen.
