Shadow of Death | Bill Moseley | 9.20.26

That the Lord will give us free course.

Appreciate that.

It was prayer that praying that the Word would have free course this morning.

There's something that I've been thinking about this week.

Um in um many places in the scripture it speaks of the uh shadow of death.

The shadow of death.

I began to search it out a little bit in the scripture.

I know we'll start in a moment.

In Psalms 23, David uses that phrase, the shadow of death.

Um but Job, in the book of Job, there are many references to the shadow of death.

I believe Job uses that that phrase.

Uh I believe it's eight times throughout his discourse or his conversations with his three friends that were there to counsel him.

Uh sometimes not so good counsel, but nevertheless, uh he had this conversation with the three uh comforters that had come there to help him, and Job would mention that shadow of death several many times.

Then later on in the in the book we find that one by the name of Elihu, he mentions the shadow of death one time, and then most important, God mentions the shadow of death uh one time.

So that that phrase was common enough that it would be used that much in the book of Job.

The shadow of death.

Not a place in that book where it mentions the shadow of death, is it a pleasant place at all?

Some shades are very comforting.

I sat yesterday after mowing the front yard in the shade of my house, and it felt really good.

It was a pleasant place to be.

But the shadow of death is a uh it is a negative to what's on the other side, which is light.

It takes light to bring about a shadow.

And it is always the light is on one side and the shadow is on the opposite side, coming off of the object that makes the shade.

So the shadow is not death, but it's the shadow of death.

It reflects in a negative way.

Reflection many times is a positive thing, and we look at the reflection in a pool and something like that, we can see a positive image.

And in the on a shadow though, it's the it's the darkness that's caused from something blocking the light.

When we have a shade, we find something that is in between the light and the shadow.

And in this in this case, death is the allusion to something that is casting the shadow, and it's coming from the blocking of the light.

So we see that shadow is a is a manifestation that something is there, and we get a view of it.

I noticed yesterday when the sun was straight up, it was in the very noonday of the sun, and the shadows were not long.

They were very compact and very closely aligned with what it what it was was in between.

What was in between the light and it.

So the shadow's not the object, but it does give us a sense of what that object's like.

Now, as the sun was just coming up and it cast a shadow, it made a distorted view of that object, and the the tree will look taller than what the tree really actually is, or whatever objects there, it will give a distorted view of it.

On both sides, as the sun would pass over this side, it would cast a shadow that way.

So this shadow of death is an allusion to something for us to consider.

We live in a in a world of death.

We we we are confronted with death in many forms and in many manifestations of death.

Our first mind is to go to corporal death, death of the fly of the body.

But that's not the only aspect of death to be considered.

For example, when Adam transgressed that law in the garden, he didn't die in the flesh that day corporally.

He did not get struck down and began to go back to the dust.

But that day he died a death in trespasses and in sin.

He died a death that separated him from God.

And that's what death is an indicator of a separation from one thing from another.

A death from the body certainly is a corporal death.

But a death to communion with God is a spiritual type death.

It is a communication separation.

We are separated from God.

When we're conceived in the flesh, we were born, we were shapen in iniquity and sin that our mother bring forth us, and we were dead in trespass and sin.

Paul tells us that, and you have to quicken who were dead in trespasses and sin.

So there is that aspect of death hanging over our heads.

Death is a of trespass and sin is a real thing that separated us from God in a form of no longer having that access with God, separated from Him to a position and a condition that we could not bring ourselves back from.

We could not undy ourselves, we could not unconceive ourselves in iniquity.

We were separated in our very nativity in death.

And from the day that we're born in the flesh, we live under the shadow of that death.

All men born after the seed of Adam receive that condemnation of sin.

That condemnation of death.

So death passed upon all men, for all have sinned.

All have sinned and come short of the glory of God.

So where we live from our very nativity, we live under the shadow of that death, and we cannot undo that in and of ourselves.

There's many forms in which that death will manifest itself in ways of well, we'll look at these places in Psalms because David also uses the ver the phrase shadow of death several times.

I want us to see uh four different places where David himself uses that phrase, the shadow of death.

In Psalms twenty-three.

And we all know this pretty regular verse.

Psalms twenty-three.

David says Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.

He maketh me to lie down in green pastures, he leadeth me beside still waters, he restoreth my soul, he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, this is the valley of the shadow of death.

Though I walk through the valley where that shadow of death is found.

And I'm gonna tell you, friends, we all walk through this valley of the shadow of death.

This world is a world of death.

There's death all around us, there's dead works all around us.

We're influenced and impacted by the dead works of man as they go about to establish their own righteousness and gain their own powers.

In many ways, dear friends, we are walking through the valley of the shadow of death, where death is found and it's casting its shadow, and we're walking through that.

And it can be very alarming, it can be very distunting, it can take us down to uh to the mindsets of hopelessness.

It can take us uh down through as we see all the things round about us.

We can be troubled by those things that we uh come in contact with and come in contact with us.

And sometimes, dear friends, I walk through the valley of my own self, through a valley of the shadow of death.

In my own flesh, I walk through that valley where death is found, death that is real to Bill, my friends.

Bill's problem, his causing of these dead things of the flesh, these works of the flesh that come so prevalently in me when I make the mistakes of life, and I find, dear friends, a feeling of the separation of death than before, a thrice holy God, knowing that I have sinned against him, and so my conscience is touched by those things as I walk through that valley of the shadow of death.

It's like overwhelming sometimes of the things that we're confronted with and the things that uh that we're attempted by and that we uh uh succumb to in our mind and our heart.

And so we understand uh that I'm avolent sinner.

Uh I am one, my dear friends, uh that uh that is in darkness a dark world and a dark being.

Me, my friends, I walk through this valley of the shadow of death.

But listen to what David tells us about that.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for thou art with me.

My friends, to the child of God that has been touched by that voice of the Son of God, that spirit has whispered that word of live to your heart, and that light, my friends, uh, is a beacon to our souls that though we're walking through get the illusion as you're walking through this uh this valley of the shadow of death.

Guess what?

Um in one of David's Psalms, uh I think it's the 119th Psalm, uh, he says, Thy light, thy word uh is a lamp under my feet and a light under my path.

My friends, that is why David could say, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, that's a that's an uncomfortable thing.

But yet I'll fear no evil.

Why?

Because your word, your word is a light to my is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.

So the shadow is overcome by the light, dear friends, that overcomes the shadow.

I tell you, check out uh any shadow, and you shine a light where a shadow is, and the shadow has to go away.

He overcomes that shadow of death.

David could say, I will fear no evil.

I will fear no I'll not be afraid in that condition.

I will have uh something to look at better than that shadow, because looking at the shadow, sometimes, my friend, it can be very frightening.

They make horror movies out of stuff like that, where they show a shadow, and the shadow is of something that is terrible to look at and very frightening to look at.

But I'm gonna tell you, my friends, when the light comes, that shadow's gotta go away.

That shadow cannot stand in that thought.

Though I walk through the shadow of the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil.

So I walk through it.

Let's go to the forty-fourth chapter of Psalms.

David would say, All this is the seventeenth verse, all this is come upon us, yet have we not forgotten thee, neither have we dealt falsely in thy covenant.

Our heart is not turned back from thy way, though thou hast broken us in the place of dragons and covered us with the shadow of death.

Thou hast covered us with the shadow of death.

Now my friends, it's not just a valley of the shadow of death, but I've come under the cover of the shadow of death.

You know, I have I have some fears and I've I've got I think it was Harry Truman.

Harry Truman, they asked what what is your greatest fear?

And he said, It my greatest fear is to be buried alive.

To be covered in a place and still be alive.

That, my friends, is the illusion here.

It's like being in a cave.

And one thing I uh I am, I guess because of that fear, I am claustrophobic.

I don't like caves.

People like to go down in these caverns and and walk through these places and they they find great joy.

I'm scared to death the whole time.

I'm in a cavern.

I don't care how tall that cavern is, I don't like being in a covered cavern.

It's just not comfortable for me at all.

We used to go to Six Flags, then we'd go into that spielunker's cave where you're in a little boat, and it's all controlled.

But as a kid, it scared me to death.

I didn't like being covered in that place of enclosurement.

My friends, that's the allusion here to this shadow of death, is that we're covered with this shadow of death.

Everywhere I look, you see, I don't mind being in the shadow, and if I can look out.

I noticed yesterday I like sitting in that shade, but I can look out and I see the openness ahead of me.

Didn't bother me at all to be there.

But you put me in a place where I'm covered, covered with that shadow of death, and that's a very uncomfortable, frightening place.

Here he lets us let's see an illusion of being covered with the shadow of death.

Walking through the valley of the shadow of death, now being covered.

If we have forgotten the name of our God or stretched out our hands to a strange God, shall not God search this out?

For he knoweth the secrets of the heart.

He knows the secrets of my heart covered with the shadow of death.

Let's go to the hundred and seventh Psalm of David.

107 verse 10.

He uses that word, that phrase again, the shadow of death.

And he go to the sixth verse, and they cried unto the Lord in their troubles and delivered them out of their distresses, and he led them forth by the right way, that they might go to a city of habitation.

Oh, that men would praise the Lord for his goodness and for his wonderful work to the children of men.

For he satisfieth the longing soul and filleth the hungry souls with goodness, such as sit in the darkness and in the shadow of death, being bound in affliction and iron.

You kind of get a get a picture here of this being a dungeon, being in a prison, if you will.

Think about Paul and Silas taken down and put in that innermost prison, this covered and shackled in the afflictions of this life.

That's a shadow of death that's uncomfortable to us.

Such as sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, being bound in the afflictions in iron.

See how that well, let's just come on down.

Because they rebelled against the word of God, words of God, and content condem contended the counsel of the most high.

Therefore he brought down their hearts with labor.

They fell down, and there was none to help.

Then they cried unto the Lord.

In their trouble, and he saved them out of their distresses.

He brought them, remember that it says they sat in the darkness, they sit in darkness and in the shadow of death.

It says in the 14th, he brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death, and break their bands asunder and sunder.

Oh, that men would praise the Lord for his goodness and for the wonderful work to the children of men.

So we find here this illusion here, this shadow of death.

We were captured with death.

We walked through the valley of the shadow of death.

We're covered by the shadow of death.

We sit in the darkness of the shadow of death.

That's our part of it.

That's our part of being under this death, this shadow casting over us.

But here in the 14th verse, good news comes to the child of God.

To the child of God, this 14th verse, he brought us, he brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death, and break their bands asunder.

You remember Paul and Silas as they sat there in that jail, being put there because of preaching the truth in an unfriendly world, and they had the doorkeeper there, keeping them safely bound by chains.

And then in the middle of the night, the Lord intervened and broke their shackles off of their hands, opened the doors as they sang hymns to their God.

Though they were shackled, though they were covered, though they sit in the darkness, the Lord came with his light, and he set them free from their darkness.

The shadow of death had no power over them.

There was no confounding them now.

They were delivered from their condition.

Delivered in a mighty way.

The doors fly opened, they're set free, and all the rest of the prisoners of that prison were set free, and they did not rebel and open rebellion and run out and all that.

They simply told the jailer, do thyself no harm.

We're all here.

We're all here together.

And the Lord set them free.

And I'm gonna tell you, when he set them free, he sets the jailer free.

The jailer was under his own shadow of death.

If they get loose, if they get away, it'll be you.

That's the threat to the jailer.

But I'm gonna tell you, the Lord not only set Paul and Silas free that in that Philippian jail, but the Philippian jailer said, What must I do to be saved?

My friends, he's not talking about a home in heaven.

He's talking about from the shadow of death over him.

That shadow of death that he was walking through, that he was covered by, that he sat in, that he couldn't undo and he couldn't get away from.

But I'm gonna tell you, my friend, the same God that delivered Paul and Silas free from their jail, set that jailer free from his jail.

He was under, he might have been a free man as far as Romans was, but he was under the confinement of the shadow of death, and God brings forth a deliverer, delivers that jailer.

What must I do to be saved?

Repent.

Believe what we're teaching, believe this man of Jesus Christ.

And he did.

And he was baptized in all his house that day.

It didn't make him a child of God, but it set a child of God free from his shadow of death.

He looked at things different, Brother Elton, from that day forward.

I don't believe he went back.

I believe he went forward.

You know, he he would have let Paul and Silas go, but Paul and Silas said, no, you tell them to come down here and you tell them to set us free.

Why?

Because that is going to be the delivery for the jailer.

Because they would they would set them free.

They would go on their way.

My friend, the Lord who sent them on their way.

The one that sent them to go at his bidding delivered them many, many more times through the shadow of death that they would come across.

I want to go look at there's an occasion in John chapter 10.

There's a there's a man over here that is in the confinement of the shadow of death of blindness.

This is at the pool of Saloa.

The pool of Solo.

There's two pools that are mentioned in in the New Testament.

One, let's go get the other one.

One is Bethesda, and Bethesda is over on kind of the western side of Jerusalem.

It it has two sections in it.

There is a larger section, kind of a reservoir, and the other side of the pool is a a pool that has steps so that they can go and walk down into that pool, and it was used for the ritual of washing.

It was a cleansing place.

The reservoir would overflow and it would it would cleanse the water as it passed through.

It would uh dilute it worked in a very great fashion of refreshing the water as people would wash, it would refresh the water in the step-down pool so that they could step down and then step back up, and it was a cleansing, and it was done in a ritual way under the law.

That's Bethesda, and that is the place where the man that was crippled lay at the pool.

You remember that occasion where a man was crippled and he lay at the pool, and there would be a stirring of the water, I believe it's that the water coming through, and it would refresh the stepping down into this pool place.

And it was said that the first one that was stepped down the pool would be healed, and so he lay there by that pool waiting for the stirring of the water.

His problem was that he was crippled and that he could not move fast enough many times where he could get in there before anyone else.

That's that's kind of a problem if that's the case.

The first one is the only one that gets the healing.

So there is a there is an inability in his flesh.

His own it's his problem.

And he says, when Jesus says you know talks to him about the pool, he says, I have no man that will get me in the water fast enough so I can be the first one in.

That is a conditional situation.

That is a conditional situation for that man, which is consistent with our condition, is that what our flesh cannot do.

That's the problem for us, is our our flesh cannot do it fast enough, or cannot do it well enough, or consistent enough, or whatever other condition you got.

A problem is with me.

I'm the problem.

I can't get there, and I got no man that'll get me there.

Matter of fact, Brother Jim, there wasn't any man that could get him there fast enough.

But there came along a man that didn't need to get him in the pool.

He was at the right pool, but here comes the right water.

Here comes the right stirring, and as he lay there crippled, the water came to him.

The light came to him.

He was sitting under a shadow of death and could not get himself out of it.

But here comes the light and gets on the right side of the of the problem.

There's not going to be a shadow of this man.

There's going to be the light of this man.

Jesus comes along.

And I don't find where Jesus helped him in the pool.

I don't even find where the man ever got in the pool.

I just find a man, Jesus, that came along and says, Take up thy bed and walk.

And he took up his bed and walked.

And Jesus got in trouble for doing it on the Sabbath day.

They all knew that that man had been sitting there and crippled and unable to help himself.

And they see this man now.

He's up and he's got his bed.

He is a testimony that something is evidence is clear that he is out from under the shadow of that death.

And all they can think of is how dare you do it on the Sabbath.

They had forgotten what the Sabbath was given for.

Do you know, my friends, the Sabbath came to that man that had been sitting by that pool all that time?

The Sabbath of rest came to him.

And the Lord gave him the Sabbath.

Now here we are at the other pool.

At the other pool is the pool of Saloon.

It's also a pool of washing, of refreshing, of cleansing.

And it was done under the law, but that law is a schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ.

And here it is sitting at the pool.

And it also has the upper pool of reservoir, the smaller, and it's indicated by the steps.

The steps leading down to the spool.

I've read a little along this pool of Siloam, and they they just found some of the steps.

With archaeology, they they have found some of the steps that go down to this pool of Siloam.

Siloam pool was created in the time of Hezekiah, when the Assyrians were assaulting Jerusalem.

They were coming down, they had already conquered the northern ten tribes, and they were coming against the Judah and Benjamin at Jerusalem.

And Hezekiah was given the foresight, I believe, by God, that he should build an aquador, an aquador.

Is that the word?

Aquedor.

Aqueduct.

Aqueduct, thank you.

An aqueduct that would come and deliver water down in Jerusalem.

And it was called Hezekiah's Tunnel.

And that aqueduct was built because of the serious threat of an enemy that would try to cut the water off or cut them off from the water, so this aqueduct would deliver water down into the pool of Siloam and it would refresh itself and then run on out.

That's all interesting stuff.

But what's really interesting is that was eight or nine hundred years ahead of Jesus coming along right here.

But the pool of Saloon was already there.

And there uh there is a man not at the pool, magic.

He's not sitting by the pool.

But Jesus comes along, and here it is.

This is the blind man that had been born blind.

Jesus passed, but the ninth chapter, Jesus passed by, he saw a man which was blind from his birth.

And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin?

This man or his parents?

That he was born blind.

And Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents, but that the works of God should be made manifest in him.

I must work the works of him that sent me.

Notice that I must do the works of him that sent me.

While it is day the night cometh when no man can work.

For as long as I'm in the world, I am the light of the world.

Notice these little details here.

Here comes the light, and the light was sent.

The light was sent, and the light is going to do the works of him that sent it.

When he had thus spoken, he spat on the ground and made clay of spittle, and he anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay.

And what I've always known here is that that don't sound like normal eye work.

It don't sound like something you do to somebody that was blind is make clay with spittle and anoint, rub it in those eyes.

But Jesus didn't do things in the natural.

I believe he did took spit, and he made a potent.

It's opposite of the flesh, but it is powerful in his power, in his hand.

And he said unto him, he rubbed his eyes, and he said unto him, Go wash in the pool of Silo, which is by interpretation, sent.

Jesus says, I was sent, I have anointed, now I sent.

Now I send you.

I send you to go do what I told you to do.

You don't have to worry about, brother Lord, whether it makes sense.

You don't have to, you don't have to come up with all kinds of ideas of how this could work.

What it comes down to is Jesus said, go wash.

Go wash in a particular place.

He's not telling them how to get to heaven.

He's not telling them how to get to be a child of God.

He's talking to his child about how you're going to see.

How you're going to have your eyes opened up.

You've been sitting in darkness.

You've been sitting under the cloud.

You've been walking through the valley of the shadow of death.

You've been covered by the shadow of death.

You've been sitting in the darkness of the shadow of death.

And here comes, dear friends, 107.14 of Psalms, when he will deliver us from that shadow of death.

When he'll bring us out of that shadow of death.

When Jesus takes spittle and makes clay and he anoints and he commands to go.

That's not an invitation, Brother Steve, to go.

I'm not inviting you, I'm telling you to go.

Go and wash.

Obedience, dear friends, is the key words here.

Go wash, which is interpreted as sin.

He went his way therefore and washed and came seeing.

And came seeing.

From his time here on earth, he was man, God in clay, man that was made flesh.

And God hath taken of himself the clay and of himself the spittle.

The Spirit of God and the Word of God has been given to us that we are to take that and we are to go and wash and come seeing, dear friends.

I like to see.

You know what conquers the shadow of death?

It's vision.

It's seeing past that shadow of death and seeing what's on the other side of death.

That light.

That light, the shadow wouldn't be there if it wasn't manifested.

Hey, that's light.

The light shines on the death and it's cast the shadow.

So I know if I look backward now, I see the shadow, I see death, I see light, I see the life.

I see the one that is greater than death.

The one that conquers death.

The one that was dead, but yet now he's alive.

That one that was uh walking through the shadow of death, that one that was covered with the shadow of death, that one that did sit in this in the darkness of this world.

He came through this, and he uh uh he was uh exposed to darkness, but the darkness comprehended it not, didn't change him one bit.

Oh, the shadow of death did not impact him, did not turn him, did not conquer him.

He conquered death, dear friends.

He conquered it on the cross, and the proof of my friends is that he was buried for three days and three nights.

He lay there in that covered tomb.

That body was dead, but yet they came back after three days.

And those stones were rolled away, and they were given those wonderful words.

Why seek ye the living among the dead?

He is not here, but he is risen.

The light, my friends, is greater than death.

He's the one that conquers that shadow.

He's the one that conquered death.

He's delivered us and brought us out from that death, even as he did here with a man that was born blind.

You know, they they tried to get him to recant.

They tried to get his parents to recant.

The parents just says, He's of age.

Ask him, he can speak for himself.

They came back to him again and they said, just how'd this happen?

Well, there was a man, and he came and he anointed my eyes with clay and was spittle.

And said, Go wash.

And I wouldn't wash, and now I see.

Just that simple.

No, it's got to be something more than that.

It's got to be more than that.

I love how it ends up here.

These words spake his parents because they feared the Jews.

For the Jews had agreed already that if any man did confess that he was Christ, he should be put out of the synagogue.

You know that sounds like a shadow of death.

That sounds like something that they were feared of.

Therefore said his parents, He's of age, ask him.

Then again came they to the man that was blind and said unto him, Give God the praise.

We know that this man is a sinner.

He answered and said, Whether he be a sinner or no.

I know not.

One thing I know, one thing I know, that whereas I was blind, now I see.

There's no shadow of death here, for instance.

He's got open eyes, he's got vision, he's got a clear view, and he can see what he sees.

He knows the facts.

Whether he's a sinner or not, I don't know that, but I know one thing.

I was blind, but now I see.

We sing that song, I was blind, but now I see.

Then said they unto him again, What did he to thee?

And he opened her eyes.

He said, I have told you already.

It gets a little bit comical, in that, what else can I tell you?

You know that's the way some people are with the gospel.

You give them chapter and verse, you give them verbiage that is undeniable, indisputable, and so easy to understand.

And you have to quickened who was dead and trespassed.

That's about as easy as it gets.

According as he has chosen us in him before the foundation of the world.

That's just about as easy as it gets.

You know, I just can't tell you much.

We love him because he first loved us, is Brother Jim Pray.

That's pretty easy.

We love him because he first loved us.

I've told you already.

How many times have I how many ways can I tell you that?

I don't need to go opining about those verses because they speak for themselves.

They're so plain.

And anyone that has vision can see it like this man.

He's got clear vision.

He said, I've told you already, and you did not hear.

Wherefore would you hear it again?

Will you also be his disciples?

Then they reviled him and said, Thou art his disciple, thou art his disciple.

But we are Moses' disciples.

We know that God spake unto Moses.

For as for this fellow, we know not from whence he is.

You know, they testified against themselves right there.

They testified against themselves.

The man answered and said unto them, Why here why herein is a miraculous more a marvelous thing that ye know not from whence he is, and yet he has opened my eyes.

You you testify against yourself, and yet here's the marvelous thing, here am I, and I see.

He has opened mine eyes.

Now we know that God heareth not sinners, but if any man be a worshipper of God and doeth his will, him he heareth.

Since the world began, it had not heard that any man opened the eyes of one that was born blind.

They they did cast him out.

And you know what?

That was that was the best thing that ever happened to that man.

They cast him out for testifying the truth about Christ.

That's being cast out of the shadow of death.

That's being delivered from it.

Now here's Jesus heard that they had cast him.

Thirty-fifth verse.

Jesus heard that they had cast him out, and when he had found him, he said unto him, Dost thou believe on the Son of God?

And he answered and said, Who is he, Lord, that I might believe on him?

Jesus said unto him, Thou hast both seen him, and it is he that talketh with thee.

That's a more marvelous thing.

He thought it can't get any better than getting my eyesight.

But what's better than getting my eyesight is what the eyesight got to see.

He was given his sight, and then now he gets sight of the marvelous thing.

He gets sight of God's Son manifested in the flesh, having dealt with him and giving him his eyesight, but giving him that time to view the Son of God.

That, my friends, is what we get when we hear the gospel message, when you hear the truth about Jesus Christ and what he has done for you, and what he has done to you.

It, my friends, is the most marvelous thing.

The gospel is that which bringeth life and immortality to light.

To light.

Not in the shadow, not in the darkness, not in the covering, but in the very openness of the light, God manifests Himself through the gospel, which brings life and immortality to light.

Not to life.

The gospel doesn't bring it to life, it brings it to light.

It brings it right up in your vision, your spiritual vision, so that you see it as it is.

The Lord hath brought us out of our shadow of death and gives us view of Him and none like Him.
