  5. And Johnny in his kindness and compassion has asked me to read just four verses.

  6. So I haven't had to stay up all night practicing the names.

  7. Maybe Johnny is going to read the other 66.

  8. I don't know.

  9. But I'm going to read verses 1 to 2 and then 68 to 70 this morning from Ezra chapter 2.

    Ezra 2 chapter mention

  10. So let's hear the word of God together.

  11. Ezra 2 verse 1.

    Ezra 2:1

  12. Now these are the people of the province who came up from captivity of the exiles,

  13. whom Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, had taken captive to Babylon.

  14. They returned to Jerusalem and Judah, each to their own town,

  15. in company with Zerubbabel, Joshua, Nehemiah, Sariah, Lachiah, Mordecai, Bilshan, Mispar, Bigvi, Rahum, and Banah.

  16. The list of the men of the people of Israel.

  17. And then jump down towards the end of the chapter in verse 68.

  18. When they arrived at the house of the Lord in Jerusalem,

  19. some of the heads of the families gave freewill offerings towards the rebuilding of the house of God on its site.

  20. According to their ability, they gave to the treasury for this work 61,000 darocks of gold,

  21. 5,000 minas of silver, and 100 priestly garments.

  22. The priests, the Levites, the musicians, the gatekeepers, and the temple servants settled in their own towns,

  23. along with some of the other people, and the rest of the Israelites settled in their towns.

  24. Amen.

  25. Thank you, Johnny.

  26. Just talk amongst yourselves while I get settled here.

  27. Okay, don't.

  28. Keep our Bibles open at Ezra chapter 2, and let's pray.

    Ezra 2 chapter mention

  29. Our Father God, would you please capture our hearts and minds afresh.

  30. That we may listen carefully to your word.

  31. Holy Spirit, will you teach us more about Jesus today?

  32. And would you please lead us that we might worship Jesus with all of our life?

  33. In Jesus' name we pray.

  34. Amen.

  35. Amen.

  36. Well, Ralph didn't get to do the exciting stuff.

  37. This is great, isn't it?

  38. Follow with me in the middle of verse 2.

  39. The list of the men of the people of Israel.

  40. The descendants of Parosh, 2,172.

  41. Of Shephthah, 372.

  42. Of Shephthah, 372.

  43. Of Arrah, 775.

  44. Of Path of Moab, through the line of Jeshua and Joab.

  45. Now, isn't that interesting?

  46. Through the line of Jeshua and Joab.

  47. 2,812.

  48. 2,812.

  49. Of Elam, 1,254.

  50. Of Zatu.

  51. Great name.

  52. 945.

  53. Anyone asleep yet?

  54. It reminds me of history and maths at school.

  55. Names I know nothing about.

  56. And numbers which are entirely confusing.

  57. During the week, I sat down to have lunch with my daughter Rebecca.

  58. And very kindly, she asked me, Dad, how's the study going?

  59. Well, I said, we're doing Jeshua too.

  60. I know, she said.

  61. I saw it at Sunday.

  62. That big, long list.

  63. Dad, just move on.

  64. Well, that's how I felt.

  65. Just turn the page and start in chapter 3.

  66. Something a little bit more understandable.

  67. But if we do that, we miss out on something very important.

  68. You see, God could have left chapter 2 out of the Bible completely.

  69. But since it's in the Bible, it must be for our edification and encouragement.

  70. In fact, these verses teach us that God's people really matter.

  71. God's people really matter.

  72. First, the people of God will never be forgotten.

  73. The people of God will never be forgotten.

  74. Context, as we get into chapter 2.

  75. Remember, God's people had broken the covenant.

  76. They had failed to listen to God and to love God.

  77. And because of their disobedience, God had disciplined them.

  78. They were sent into exile by the Babylonians for 70 years.

  79. And now those 70 years are up.

  80. And so we read in chapter 2, verse 1.

  81. Now these are the people of the province who came up from the captivity of the exiles,

  82. whom Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, had taken captive to Babylon.

  83. They returned to Jerusalem and Judah, each to their own town.

  84. Now this tells us two really important things.

  85. First, that God always keeps his promise to his people.

  86. He keeps his promise to his people.

  87. Not only had God promised exile, he had promised their return.

  88. He would always keep a people for himself.

  89. Keep your finger in Ezra and just jump forward a few books to Jeremiah.

  90. Jeremiah 32.

  91. And verse 37.

  92. Jeremiah 32, verse 37.

    Jeremiah 32:37

  93. This is what God says through the prophet.

  94. He says,

  95. I will surely gather them, that is my people,

  96. from all the lands where I banish them in my furious anger and great wrath.

  97. I will bring them back to this place and let them live in safety.

  98. They will be my people and I will be their God.

  99. Verse 40.

  100. I will make an everlasting covenant with them.

  101. I will never stop doing good to them.

  102. I will inspire them to fear me so that they will never turn away from me.

  103. I will rejoice in doing them good and will assuredly plant them in this land with all my heart and soul.

  104. Back to Ezra.

  105. You see, God had promised that he would preserve a people for himself.

  106. They will be my people and I will be their God.

  107. God is committed to his people.

  108. He doesn't give up on his people.

  109. He promised their return and return they did.

  110. God always keeps his promise to his people.

  111. But more than that,

  112. God remembers the names of his people.

  113. He remembers the names of a people.

  114. Look at verse 1.

  115. Now these are the people who came up from captivity.

  116. And in case anyone gets confused about who they are,

  117. guess what?

  118. They're all recorded.

  119. Look again at verse 2.

  120. This is the list of the men of the people of Israel.

  121. The descendants of Parosh.

  122. 2,172.

  123. All their clans.

  124. And no, we're not going to read through them all.

  125. But here we have all their clans and all their exact number.

  126. Verse 21.

  127. There were the men of Bethlehem, of Netthopah.

  128. 56.

  129. Of Anathoth.

  130. 128.

  131. Of Asmetev.

  132. 42.

  133. They are all remembered.

  134. They're engraved in history.

  135. Recently, there was the 9-11 memorial.

  136. 25 years since the Twin Towers were attacked.

  137. On that day, 2,977 people were killed.

  138. As a lasting memory, the names of every victim are inscribed at that memorial place.

  139. In fact, on the 11th of September, every year, their names are read aloud by family members.

  140. Now, could you imagine if the master of ceremonies stood up and said,

  141. Well, a lot of people died here a long time ago.

  142. But, you know, we just don't have time to mention them all.

  143. No.

  144. No.

  145. They can't be forgotten.

  146. Each one is remembered.

  147. Each one is recorded.

  148. Well, here we have a list of the names of those God rescued from captivity.

  149. It's a lot of people.

  150. In fact, verse 64 gives us the total number.

  151. The whole company numbered 42,360.

  152. That's a lot of people.

  153. You see, the writers could have made verse 64 verse 2 and not bothered with all the list of names.

  154. But no, they can't do that.

  155. They can't be forgotten.

  156. Each one is named and precious.

  157. Each one is known by God and is special to him.

  158. Isaiah puts it well.

  159. Here the people of God are crying out.

  160. The Lord has forsaken me.

  161. The Lord has forgotten me.

  162. Do you ever think that?

  163. God responds.

  164. Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she is born?

  165. Though she may forget, I will not forget you.

  166. See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands.

  167. Your walls are ever before me.

  168. Now let me say, if you here today belong to God.

  169. You are not forgotten by God.

  170. Whatever may happen.

  171. You are God's treasured possession.

  172. Special.

  173. Remembered.

  174. Engraved.

  175. Graved.

  176. On his hands.

  177. In fact, your name is written into a special book.

  178. And we'll come back to that in a minute.

  179. But for now, be encouraged.

  180. That the people of God.

  181. Will never, ever.

  182. Be forgotten.

  183. By God Almighty.

  184. So, the people of God are never, ever forgotten.

  185. Second.

  186. The people of God are gathered to worship.

  187. You see, when God rescued his people and brought them back from exile and brought them to their land, it was for a purpose.

  188. The purpose was to worship God.

  189. Two things we need to look at here.

  190. First, look at the temple workers.

  191. Look at the list of names that we have here.

  192. It's divided into sections.

  193. So, verse 2, we have the people of Israel and their list of names is recorded.

  194. Then in verse 36, we have the priests.

  195. Verse 40, the Levites.

  196. Verse 41, the musicians.

  197. Verse 42, the gatekeepers of the temple.

  198. Verse 43, we have the temple servants.

  199. And then jump over to verse 58.

  200. We have the temple servants again, which includes servants of Solomon.

  201. Now, all these people here, the priests, the Levites, the musicians, the gatekeepers, the servants.

  202. They've all got something in common.

  203. Something that keeps them together.

  204. And what is that?

  205. They are all responsible for the worship of God in the temple.

  206. The priests would sacrifice the animals.

  207. The Levites would help the priests.

  208. The musicians would sing.

  209. The gatekeepers would make sure that the unclean didn't get in.

  210. And the servants, well, they assisted wherever there was help needed.

  211. They were all responsible for the worship of God.

  212. No names are mentioned here about the construction workers.

  213. Nothing about the planners.

  214. But the names of the temple workers, they're all highlighted.

  215. They seem to get special treatment.

  216. In other words, worship is God's priority.

  217. Look at how it's put in verse 70.

  218. And who gets special mention?

  219. Well, the priests and the Levites and the musicians and the gatekeepers and the temple servants settled in their own towns along with some of the other people.

  220. And the rest of the Israelites settled in their own towns.

  221. You see, they're marked out as being different because worship matters.

  222. Which brings us to not just temple workers, but the worship of God.

  223. You see, this isn't the first time that God's people were in exile.

  224. You know your Bible history.

  225. About a thousand years before, God's people were in captivity in Egypt.

  226. And God saw his people and he remembered his promise to his people and he rescued them through Moses.

  227. Exodus records for us what God said to Moses.

  228. Do you remember?

  229. Remember, when the people have been brought out of Egypt, you will worship me on this mountain.

  230. God's purpose is that his people would be gathered together to worship him.

  231. In fact, seven more times, God would say to Moses, go to Pharaoh and say to him, this is what the Lord says.

  232. Let my people go so that they may worship me.

  233. Every time Pharaoh turned around and says, no, I'm not letting them go.

  234. Off Moses would go again.

  235. This is what the Lord says.

  236. Let my people go so that they may worship me.

  237. You see, the purpose of rescuing them from exile was so they could worship God.

  238. That they would live for God.

  239. Serve God.

  240. Honor God.

  241. Give to God.

  242. They were to celebrate and remember their redemption through the Exodus.

  243. Now in Ezra, we find the same thing happening.

  244. Just as there was an Exodus from Egypt, so we have another Exodus from Babylon.

  245. God redeems his people so he might gather them together to the worship of God.

  246. You see, God longs for a people who will love him and honor him.

  247. A God who redeems and saves and changes our life is worthy of our worship.

  248. God brings his people together.

  249. And he will never forget them.

  250. And he calls us to worship him.

  251. Now, which brings us to number three.

  252. The people of God always come to Jesus.

  253. You see, it's clear from the text in Ezra that while we have a list of all the names,

  254. not everyone who returned were part of God's people.

  255. Essentially, they were divided into two groups.

  256. And they were divided like this.

  257. There were those who were excluded.

  258. Look at verse 59 with me.

  259. Forgive any mispronounciations here.

  260. The following came up from the towns of Tel Mela, Tel Harsha, Cherub, Ad Don and Immer.

  261. But the families could not show that their families were descended from Israel.

  262. They didn't have the right credentials.

  263. They didn't have the birth cert.

  264. They had no record of their family lineage.

  265. It seems they were in the same category as some of the priests.

  266. Verse 61.

  267. And from among the priests, there were the descendants of Hababaya, Hagkaz, Brasilia.

  268. We'll just go to verse 62 because this is the important bit.

  269. These search for their family records.

  270. But they could not find them.

  271. So they were excluded from the priesthood as unclean.

  272. Shut out.

  273. You see, to come under the covenant blessings,

  274. you had to show that you were descended from Israel.

  275. You had to be able to trace your family line all the way back to, remember them?

  276. Isaac, Jacob, Abraham.

  277. And if you had the records to prove it, you were in.

  278. You were part of the big family of God.

  279. But if you didn't have the family records, you were excluded.

  280. No longer part of the community.

  281. But the problem was much deeper than just a few people who couldn't find their names in a record.

  282. You see, the rest of the people may have had the paperwork and had the stamp of approval.

  283. But they had all failed to live as God's family should.

  284. Instead of worshipping God, they went back to worship other gods.

  285. If you read the end of Ezra and Nehemiah, it's terribly depressing.

  286. Because after all of God bringing them back again,

  287. they do exactly the same thing and break the covenant again.

  288. Although God had redeemed them,

  289. they would reject him.

  290. You see, it wasn't just those who couldn't find their names in the records who were excluded.

  291. It was anybody who didn't keep the covenant.

  292. They too were excluded.

  293. In other words, based on their own performances,

  294. they would all be excluded.

  295. Which brings us to a really important question.

  296. Who then are the people of God?

  297. Who are those who are included?

  298. Who gets to be part of God's big family?

  299. And how does God keep his promise that the people of God will never be forgotten?

  300. But if they keep messing up,

  301. how do they remain part of God's family?

  302. Well, the story of the Bible makes it clear

  303. that we need someone much better than ourselves.

  304. You see, the true people of God are those who come to Jesus.

  305. Two things we're going to look at as we finish to bring it all together.

  306. Here's the first one.

  307. Jesus is the true Israel.

  308. Jesus is the true Israel.

  309. What do we mean by that?

  310. Well, there is only one who has lived a faithful and obedient life.

  311. And that's Jesus.

  312. He alone is the one who has kept the covenant.

  313. He is that faithful worshipper

  314. who never turned to any other God

  315. but did everything his father asked of him.

  316. You see, Jesus is the true Israel.

  317. He is the son of God

  318. who is included

  319. and never excluded.

  320. So if he's in

  321. and he's part of the family of God

  322. what do I need to do

  323. to be part of the family?

  324. Well, we all need to be related to Jesus

  325. by our faith.

  326. Go with me please to Ephesians chapter 1.

    Ephesians 1 chapter mention

  327. Ephesians chapter 1.

    Ephesians 1 chapter mention

  328. So we're asking the question

  329. what do we need to do

  330. to be included?

  331. We need to be related to Jesus

  332. by faith.

  333. So Ephesians chapter 1

    Ephesians 1:13

  334. verse 13.

  335. Let's read verse 13.

  336. And you also

  337. were included in Christ

  338. when you heard the message

  339. of truth.

  340. The gospel of your salvation.

  341. When you heard the good news

  342. about Jesus Christ

  343. the true Israel

  344. the perfect obedient son

  345. who stands in your place

  346. representing you

  347. pouring out blessings upon you

  348. and in our place

  349. taking the curse that we deserve.

  350. When you were included in Christ

  351. when you heard the message of truth

  352. the gospel of salvation

  353. when you believed

  354. when you trusted Christ

  355. that he is your life

  356. you were marked in him

  357. with a seal

  358. the promised Holy Spirit

  359. who is a deposit

  360. guaranteeing our inheritance

  361. until the redemption of those

  362. who are God's possession

  363. to the praise

  364. of his glory.

  365. Turn the page

  366. to chapter 2

  367. verse 12.

  368. He goes on to explain it

  369. a bit more.

  370. Remember

  371. verse 12

  372. that at that time

  373. you were separate

  374. from Christ

  375. excluded

  376. from citizenship

  377. in Israel

  378. and foreigners

  379. to the covenants

  380. of the promise

  381. without hope

  382. and without God

  383. in the world

  384. but now

  385. in Christ Jesus

  386. you who were once

  387. far away

  388. excluded

  389. and shut out

  390. have been brought near

  391. by the blood of Christ.

  392. Verse 19

  393. Consequently

  394. you are no longer

  395. foreigners

  396. and strangers

  397. but fellow citizens

  398. with God's people

  399. and also members

  400. of his family.

  401. You see

  402. when we come

  403. to Jesus

  404. just as people

  405. in the Old Testament

  406. look forward

  407. in faith

  408. to Jesus coming

  409. when we trusted

  410. in Jesus

  411. we are truly

  412. included

  413. never forgotten

  414. always

  415. remembered.

  416. In fact

  417. as members

  418. of God's family

  419. our names

  420. are written

  421. on a list

  422. remember

  423. what that book

  424. is

  425. Revelation

  426. calls it

  427. the

  428. book of life

  429. or the

  430. Lamb's

  431. book of life

  432. if you want

  433. to just flick

  434. the page

  435. because it's

  436. very close

  437. to Philippians

    Philippians 4 chapter mention

  438. chapter 4

  439. it's the next

  440. letter along

  441. just very quickly

  442. as an example

  443. Philippians

    Philippians 4 chapter mention

  444. chapter 4

  445. and verse

  446. 3

  447. so Paul writes

  448. he says

  449. yes

  450. and I ask

  451. you

  452. my true

  453. companion

  454. help these

  455. women

  456. since they

  457. have contended

  458. at my side

  459. in the cause

  460. of the gospel

  461. along with

  462. Clement

  463. and the rest

  464. of his

  465. co-workers

  466. whose names

  467. are in

  468. the book

  469. of life

  470. isn't that

  471. wonderful

  472. God has

  473. a book

  474. of life

  475. and in it

  476. are the names

  477. of his

  478. people

  479. and they can

  480. never be

  481. erased

  482. or removed

  483. it is written

  484. permanently

  485. and

  486. eternally

  487. if you are

  488. trusting in

  489. Jesus

  490. you are

  491. never

  492. ever

  493. excluded

  494. you're always

  495. included

  496. and nothing

  497. can get you

  498. off the list

  499. not your

  500. sin

  501. not Satan

  502. not suffering

  503. nothing

  504. you are

  505. forever

  506. secure

  507. in him

  508. he is

  509. the true

  510. Israel

  511. our true

  512. representative

  513. and we are

  514. related to him

  515. by faith

  516. what is

  517. Christ's

  518. is ours

  519. we belong

  520. forever

  521. the second

  522. thing we need

  523. to get right

  524. here

  525. is that if

  526. Jesus is the

  527. true Israel

  528. the church

  529. is the

  530. new

  531. Israel

  532. you see

  533. when we trust

  534. in Jesus

  535. we're not

  536. left in

  537. isolation

  538. we become

  539. part of

  540. his

  541. community

  542. the church

  543. God's

  544. family

  545. you see

  546. Jesus

  547. rescued us

  548. from exile

  549. he has

  550. redeemed us

  551. from our

  552. captivity

  553. to sin

  554. and death

  555. and hell

  556. and he now

  557. leads us

  558. on a new

  559. exodus

  560. he brings us

  561. out

  562. so that we

  563. might

  564. worship

  565. God

  566. for that's

  567. God's purpose

  568. for us

  569. we are a

  570. people

  571. gathered

  572. together

  573. to worship

  574. God

  575. with our

  576. lives

  577. remember how

  578. Paul put it

  579. to the church

  580. Rome

  581. he says

  582. therefore I

  583. urge you

  584. my brothers

  585. and sisters

  586. in view

  587. of God's

  588. mercy

  589. just pause

  590. and think

  591. back to the

  592. mercy of

  593. God

  594. how he

  595. has redeemed

  596. you and

  597. rescued you

  598. and saved

  599. you

  600. what's our

  601. response

  602. to offer

  603. our bodies

  604. as a living

  605. sacrifice

  606. holy and

  607. pleasing to

  608. God

  609. this is

  610. your true

  611. and proper

  612. worship

  613. this is

  614. God's

  615. great purpose

  616. for his

  617. people

  618. from beginning

  619. to end

  620. it's the

  621. story of

  622. the Bible

  623. one writer

  624. put it

  625. like this

  626. you can

  627. follow it

  628. on screen

  629. redemption

  630. is the

  631. means

  632. worship

  633. is the

  634. goal

  635. it's the

  636. purpose of

  637. history

  638. the goal

  639. of the

  640. whole

  641. Christian

  642. story

  643. worship

  644. isn't

  645. just one

  646. segment

  647. of the

  648. Christian

  649. life

  650. among

  651. others

  652. worship

  653. is this

  654. is the

  655. entire

  656. Christian

  657. life

  658. now if

  659. you've

  660. known the

  661. mercy of

  662. God

  663. in your

  664. life

  665. if you've

  666. been

  667. redeemed

  668. from sin

  669. and hell

  670. by God

  671. you are

  672. called

  673. together

  674. with

  675. God's

  676. people

  677. to worship

  678. him

  679. not just

  680. for a

  681. couple of

  682. hours on

  683. a Sunday

  684. morning

  685. but with

  686. your whole

  687. life

  688. God

  689. gathers

  690. us

  691. that we

  692. would be

  693. a

  694. worshiping

  695. people

  696. one day

  697. the Lord

  698. Jesus is

  699. going to

  700. come again

  701. and the

  702. book of

  703. life

  704. will be

  705. opened

  706. and all

  707. the names

  708. of those

  709. who trust

  710. in Jesus

  711. will be

  712. read

  713. is your

  714. name

  715. in the

  716. book of

  717. life

  718. for those

  719. whose names

  720. are written

  721. you will

  722. gather

  723. together

  724. with all

  725. God's

  726. people

  727. of all

  728. time

  729. and in

  730. all

  731. history

  732. I can't

  733. wait

  734. perfect

  735. joy

  736. comfort

  737. everybody

  738. God's

  739. people

  740. together

  741. doesn't

  742. that lead

  743. you to

  744. worship

  745. God

  746. to honor

  747. him

  748. and live

  749. for him

  750. doesn't

  751. it make

  752. you want

  753. to sing

  754. before the

  755. throne of

  756. God above

  757. I have a

  758. strong

  759. a perfect

  760. plea

  761. a great

  762. high priest

  763. whose name

  764. is love

  765. and ever

  766. lives

  767. and pleads

  768. for me

  769. my name

  770. is graven

  771. on his

  772. hands

  773. his crucified

  774. hands

  775. who died

  776. for me

  777. my name

  778. is written

  779. on his

  780. heart

  781. I know

  782. that while

  783. in heaven

  784. he stands

  785. no tongue

  786. can bid

  787. me

  788. thence

  789. depart

  790. brothers and

  791. sisters

  792. rejoice

  793. that your

  794. name

  795. is written

  796. in the

  797. book of

  798. life

  799. let's

  800. pray

  801. what a

  802. story

  803. what a

  804. wonderful

  805. true

  806. story

  807. of a

  808. savior

  809. Jesus

  810. Christ

  811. who has

  812. redeemed

  813. us

  814. because he

  815. never

  816. forgets

  817. us

  818. that we

  819. might

  820. worship

  821. him

  822. lord

  823. thank you

  824. what more

  825. can we

  826. say

  827. but praise

  828. you

  829. for all

  830. that you

  831. have done

  832. your

  833. great

  834. mercy

  835. in

  836. response

  837. we offer

  838. our bodies

  839. as living

  840. sacrifices

  841. holy

  842. and

  843. pleasing

  844. to you

  845. our

  846. worship

  847. of a

  848. great

  849. God

  850. amen
