EP350: Jeff & The Holy Aces Talk Ministry in VRChat

All right. Hey, welcome to the Church Digital Podcast. We are doing a late night stream here with the podcast. Talking episode 350. We're hanging out. The music stopped on me for some reason. I hit my magic button and everything went quiet. That's really weird. But hey, we'll get it back here in a second. But we've got episode 350 doing a special recording here. I actually would be in pajamas right now. True confession. But I'm on camera and I am wearing still pants, not pajama bottoms. Just to make it clear. Yes, I wear jammy bottoms when I sleep at night. But hey, today we are doing a deep dive. We're doing an interview. I have been wanting to have this conversation for months. Every time I talk with these guys, I just get more and more surprised with what they're doing.

What's going on. Some of their unique approaches to ministry in virtual reality, in the metaverse, specifically in VR chat. But before we get into the Holy Aces, quick reminder.

So, like, kudos to you guys.

But Dark Void, let's open up with you here.

Man, tell us a little bit about yourself.

Well, I'm 15.

A lot of you have already heard.

I'm really young doing this.

And I've just, I've got a love for aviation, a love for Christ.

I wanted to figure out a way how I can, you know, blend those together and form a way for people to really experience of what Christ is capable of and what He can do in your life.

And through that, we have everything that we've built.

So, when we perform these air shows for these churches, it's a look at what Christ can do, you know.

Look at what, look at the power He has if you put Him at the center of something.

And so, that is really the goal I want to shoot for when doing these air shows.

Alongside, I also do this, if you are unable to attend an air show in the real world, whether that's financially, physically, mentally, financially, I said that already.

It's just, it's an amazing way you can really get a grasp of what this is like in the real world and how amazing it is and how amazing it can be if you put Christ at the center of it.

Yeah, there's a lot right there, and we're going to get plenty of time to dig into it.

But let's just, let's talk about the purple cow in the room.

You're 15.

And so, you started a virtual reality ministry at age 15.

What, tell me, well, let's, I tell you what, tell me about some of your team, maybe introduce in a little detail the two gentlemen in here and maybe talk about some of the others that are on your team.

Okay.

I'll start with my number six opposing soloist here, Hoku in the blue.

He's a phenomenal, he made the avatars, he is assistant in media, he is phenomenal in flying.

He has been a best friend of mine for a very long time.

He's been doing this for a really long time.

Just next to him is Area Space Bricks.

He is my right wingman, so in the formation you'll see him on my right wing.

He has been here since the beginning and he is a phenomenal pilot.

He is also our events coordinator.

So, Jeff, if you want to plan an event, this is your guy to go to.

Awesome.

And so, you guys, I'm seeing the avatars in virtual reality, I'm seeing the, you know, it looks like some sort of a stage kind of view.

In this VR chat world, I'm seeing the helicopter, I'm seeing the jet.

So, you guys do virtual reality air shows in, like, in VR chat?

Yes.

Like, what is, describe that for me.

Like, what is that, what does that experience look like, feel like?

What are somebody seeing when they see that?

Well, we took a very big hit on being able to do such formations, Christ inspired.

You know, we could do crosses in the sky, we can do cross formations, and just a whole bunch of just, you know, exhilarating just performances that churches can come and see, honestly.

Very interesting.

Yeah, I've got that, Keegan.

Man, so you're, you took a hit.

Like, and so, VR chat is, you know, I would consider this, forgive me, the red light district of virtual reality.

It's, in many ways, it's the cesspool.

In my book, I actually, I interviewed a woman who was raped in VR chat, and just, there's a lot of, what's his name, DJ Soto calls it the red light district of virtual reality.

Talk to me a little bit about, talk to me a little bit about why VR chat, and maybe what some of the audience experiences, or what some of the feedback has been surrounding a Christian air show in VR chat.

VR chat is definitely, unfortunately, a very, how do I say this without, very, not bring your kid here kind of game.

I've seen, it's definitely a game that you can do more than you should be able to, and the fact that it's 13 plus definitely scares me.

I've seen a lot of crazy things on here.

In terms of, you know, being a Christian community on VR chat, it's been very hard to find people outside of the Christian community and church community that, you know, genuinely respect us.

You know, VR chat and Christianity, from what I've seen, does not mix very well.

And I think that is very, that's very sad.

And, you know, I think that Christianity should, you know, dwell in here.

Yeah.

Now, so, you chose, well, first off, like, you're 15-year-old, you chose VR chat as the platform, right?

And so, why VR chat as opposed to, I don't know, Rec Room, you know, I know Altspace VR is not around anymore, you know, some of the other spatial, like, there's other platforms.

Maybe they don't have the technical expertise, but, I mean, you're a kid in a world where, you know, like, do you ever, man, I got to be careful even in this space myself.

How do you manage that?

You just look at it and look past it, honestly.

I tend not to, I tend not to pay attention to that too much in terms of why not other spaces.

If it wasn't for VR chat, I wouldn't be here right now.

My first church I found digitally wasn't VR chat.

I think that is what really pushed me into doing all this.

So, if it wasn't for VR chat, if I never pressed that install button on VR chat, I wouldn't, I probably wouldn't be here right now.

Yeah.

What church was that in VR chat, do you mind me asking?

Or, yeah, your first church?

So, hey, so you're leading.

I mean, you've got a couple guys on the screen here.

There's some others that are going to be joining us hopefully here in a little bit.

How many volunteers, how many people are involved directly in the ministry helping Holy Aces happen?

We have about 17 or 18 members that comprises of pilots, prayer study group leader, Bible study leader, moderators, you know, all these people just looking forward and helping spread the word of God, you know, in a unique way such as we have done here.

That's, I mean, that's, that's surprising.

So as a, as a high, as a 15 year old in America, what is that?

A 10th grader?

You're starting your 10th grade of 10, you're starting 10th grade this year?

I am.

Okay.

Uh, so as a 10th grader, you've, you've recruited and developed 18 people to be part of this ministry.

Are they all kids?

Um, most of them are adults.

Uh, I think about three of them are minors.

Wow.

So, um, you, you guys, I'm getting, I'm getting a heads up on the, on the VR.

Um, so you, you've got a, you've, you're working with adults.

That, that's incredible.

Um, where do you find these people?

Churches.

Honestly, um, I found a lot of these people from other Christian communities, except for

this guy to my left, I found him in another aviation community, uh, called the Black Aces.

Interesting.

They are also a formation demo team that I found him there and I recruited him.

He seemed really interested in me.

He's been here.

All right.

Is that aerospace?

Yes, that is.

All right.

So aerospace, man, tell, tell, tell me your story.

So you, so you're with Black Aces.

How did you end up here with Holy Aces?

Well, I mean, it's been a interesting path because I've always wanted to do formation flying

as a kid, seeing the Blue Angels fly and seeing the videos of the Thunderbirds.

It was incredible.

And knowing that was my passion.

And I thought the easiest way of doing that with the right people is VR track.

Anybody can buy a headset, get the free game and download it.

And you're here.

Just no extra cost when necessary.

And I mean, I've originally flew with some teams.

I think one's called Frecce, Trecolori.

I know that's the Italian team.

Times didn't match up, but I really wanted to do formation flying in some way.

If it was Christian or not, I just wanted to do formation flying because I was, I just loved

seeing that and wanted to be a part of that.

And it just never worked out.

But I believe God put a path into me where it was just that one night.

I was like, you know what?

I want to go fly around and see how it is.

And I flew around in the Black Aces world just to see the different planes.

And all of a sudden, Dark Void appeared towards the end when I was about to hop off.

And he saw I was flying and he was asking around people to be a part of the team called

the Holy Aces.

And I said, you know what?

I really want to do it.

I want to commit to a formation flight team.

I really want to show what I can do.

And especially being a Christian myself, going to churches in real life.

I mean, I don't go to the VR ministry here in VR chat.

I do go to church.

I have a local church nearby.

But yeah, when he told me about the Holy Aces and especially being a Christian team,

I hopped on it and I've stuck with it ever since.

It's been tough, but I mean, what isn't?

It's been great.

How long have Dark Void, just in general, how long have you guys been doing this?

I started the Holy Aces about this time last year.

Somewhere in early summer, I started doing the Holy Aces somewhere in the early summer.

And I really kicked off the team somewhere around there.

Early July.

Okay.

Yeah.

Sorry.

So it's been about a year, almost, give or take?

Almost, give or take a year.

Yeah.

Wow.

Okay.

And then we also got Hoku on the screen as well in the blue.

Hoku, what's your story, man?

By the way, your arm looks like it's broken.

You feeling okay?

No, I'm kidding.

Yeah.

It's all right.

I just have my controller sat down, but all right.

So really like growing up, I had like an interest in like paper airplanes and I wanted to be a pilot when I grew up.

Uh, I wanted to like drive around, um, those propeller powered airplanes and like take people for rides and stuff.

Um, as a little kid, you know, as one of those little kid dreams and several years down the road, kind of lost the interest and, um, eventually gotten to VR chat.

And, um, I got into church ministries and I really started connecting with people and I really got like, uh, that interest back of like wanting to be a pilot.

So I would go around and like, uh, these worlds, I would have planes in it.

I would just drive around by myself, leave between buildings.

I just try to get good at it.

And then I think one day I was just joining one of the church events.

I don't remember what church it was, but, uh, dark void happened to be there.

And, um, I started talking to him.

I don't know exactly how it went.

Um, but he asked me if I was interested in, in flying jets.

And I was like, I don't know.

It's like, I don't know if I want to be a part of like a team like that because I was just like very introverted, but I feel like the Lord had called me.

It was just like, this is going to be great.

You're going to be a part of something amazing go for it.

And so, um, I joined him up and, uh, he started practicing me up and, um, he really liked how I performed and he made me, uh, number six, uh, posing solace.

And I've just been continually developing my skill and I drew, I truly do have like a huge passion for this.

Like, it's really awesome being up in the air, performing these things, uh, just like really like introducing Christ in a way you wouldn't expect.

Um, Hey, I tell you what, Zuko, uh, man, why don't you, let's put you on the spot since you just, you know, came in here.

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

Tell us a little bit about yourself in short, cause I've had a conversation with you before.

In short, tell me a little bit about yourself.

Absolutely.

Uh, Jeff, thank you so much for having me here.

Uh, my name is Zuko.

Um, I am the co-owner here for the Holy Aces.

Uh, it's such an honor and privilege to be here for the church digital and be a part of such an incredible, uh, aviation team here on VR.

Uh, I met Dark Void, um, you know, uh, a little bit over about a year now, uh, in an aviation instance and he was telling me a little bit about his vision for the team.

And I fell in love with the idea so much that, you know, I, I found it in my heart that I wanted to do nothing more than to make this team a humongous success.

And I mean, I never would have thought, and I'm sure he'd be the first to tell you, I never thought that we'd be in our own brand new instance with our own customized jets, uh, all of our church supporters and followers.

And, uh, having you as a big support, Jeff, it's, it's a blessing to have you.

Here's what I want to know.

This is the question I was asking, like, okay, so, you know, Dark Void's a 10th grader.

He's like at whatever high school, nine to five.

Um, what do you guys actually do like for a living?

The rest of you on the screen.

Um, yeah.

So, you know, let's, let's start with, uh, let's start with, uh, bricks.

What do you do, man?

Well, I mean, I probably not to brag, but I probably,

you may have the most interesting job and probably the most prevalent job that you see behind these things.

I am a C-130 structural engineer.

I actually help keep those C-130s that you see flying and out in the world up in the air.

We make sure that they're safe and we make sure that our, our army and whoever needs a C-130 is there and ready to go and safe to fly.

So that's what I do.

Wow.

So like you, you actually work in the aviation field, uh, for, for the, for the military, for the, for the, who, who makes the C-130s?

Forgive me.

Is that Boeing or is that?

That is the people that make C-130s is, uh, Lockheed Martin.

Lockheed Martin.

You know, it's interesting to think, I mean, we recently back in August, we had our 70th anniversary of the C-130 flying.

I mean, the first flight of the C-130 was back in 1954.

Wow.

This baby has been flying and it's capable.

Very, that's very cool.

I've got my, my brother-in-law works for Lockheed.

One of my, one of my close friends works for, for Lockheed, uh, at different, different cities.

And so welcome.

Congratulations.

Thank you for, you know, the work that you're, you're doing for the, for the country.

Uh, Huku.

Of course.

Hoku.

Uh, yeah, you're probably not going to be able to top the, the C-130 engineer over here.

So what's your story?

What do you, what do you do nine to five?

Um, well, currently I am, uh, in the process of looking for a job still after three years.

Um, no, it seems like, um, I, uh, oh my goodness, technical difficulties.

My apologies.

Um, my nine to five is really mostly at home.

I do a lot of our background technical things for the team.

Mostly I, I really just do what I can.

Um, most of the time I like working on avatars.

I'm a huge avatar developer.

Um, not like huge, but like I'm huge on it.

Uh, I love making it.

Do, do you do, I mean, do you do world building?

Like did you, how much of, of what I'm seeing on the screen right now, did you do?

Uh, no, I did not make the world.

Um, one of our other pilots actually have done that.

Um, I've just made our avatars here.

Interesting.

Uh, very cool.

Um, I mean, listen, building, uh, what, what tools do you use?

What tool sets do you use to, to create your avatars?

Uh, I use, uh, Unity.

So you're, you're learning Unity.

That's, that's not a small skillset, bro.

That's, that takes a lot of effort and talent to learn.

How long you've been working in Unity?

Uh, a little over a year.

Okay.

I think I started around this time actually, uh, a little after I joined the team, I started

working on avatars and I've been at it nonstop.

I have probably a thousand to a thousand, five hundred hours in Unity.

Wow.

But, uh, yeah, I'm, uh, doing that.

Um, I've been trying to do some freelancing, uh, for like, um, photography, art.

Uh, I took a, uh, course, uh, at a trade school, uh, for a year and it's called multimedia.

And there you do, you work with Photoshop, you work with cameras, editing, broadcasting,

journalism, all that stuff.

And I really want to work in the entertainment industry.

Okay.

I really think that would be an amazing thing because.

Well, I mean, Unity in itself is, is a, is an awesome step towards that, man.

Even if you're, you're looking at combining some of the AVL that you're describing with,

um, um, with, uh, game, uh, dev, like you can do within Unity.

Uh, man, that's a, that's a unique skillset.

Don't, uh, don't, uh, sell short what you're already doing.

Uh, that's, that sounds very, uh, very interesting for you, man.

Yeah.

Hang in there.

Listen, I have a slow start, but I'm getting there.

I hopefully like, this is the career path I want.

I want to, I want to work in entertainment.

I love that.

The, uh, there is, there's a lot of opportunities, uh, man, in that don't, uh, don't be discouraged.

I mean, I'll even tell you at, at a personal level, um, you know, I know what it's like

to be in between gigs for, uh, uh, for a short and a long period of time as, as well.

So, um, you know, don't, don't lose faith and, and, and keep working hard while you're

on that path.

Um, and, and, uh, journey rocker, what do you, what do you do, man?

What's, what's your nine to five?

Uh, Zuku.

Oh my, oh my God.

Um, I have a lot of traits, uh, from being a full-time musician, uh, as a drummer, I play

for a lot of cover bands here, uh, that are in New York and then tri-state area.

I've been doing that for so many years of my life now.

Uh, I'm also a DJ.

I have my own DJ company that I run, uh, as a karaoke DJ.

So it's a lot, that's a lot of fun.

Uh, I'm actually a game show host in IRL as well as on VR chat, uh, which is a great,

uh, and I also work in a restaurant, uh, which is absolutely, uh, you know, just a joy.

I love the people that I work with and, uh, you know, uh, on the side, uh, in the summertime,

I get to actually take part in the, uh, Jones Beach air shows here on Long Island.

Uh, I get to participate and meet and network with a lot of the aviation teams, uh, which

is part of the reason why we have a, uh, Blue Angels, uh, tribute here, uh, which I'll get

into that, uh, much later on.

I'm sure that will be something that will be brought up, but I don't want to get too much

into that.

Uh, but, you know, working at the, um, airports, a lot of fun and getting a chance to meet the

actual aviation teams.

Uh, it's great.

Uh, and you know, when you get to be a pilot on here, it's even better.

Beautiful.

So what is the training like?

I tell you all, you know what I want to do here, uh, Dark Void, if it's okay, I'd love

to watch one round of the, the, the, the first video I clip I have, the first video clip I

have for you guys where it's not the, it's not the Blue Angels one.

It's the other one.

Like, can, can we actually, is it okay if I show that right now, uh, on the screen?

Perfectly fine.

So here, I'm going to push a couple of magic buttons and, um, let's, uh, let's go ahead

and, uh, watch, uh, this first clip.

I'm American made, but like Chevrolet, my mama taught me wrong some right.

I was born in the South, sometimes I have a big mouth when I see something that I don't

like.

I gotta say it.

We've been driving this road for a month, a long time, paying no mind to the signs.

Well, this neighborhood's changed, it's all been rearranged.

We left that team somewhere behind.

All right, let me ask, hopefully, can you guys hear me okay right now?

Um, what is like, what's actually happening right now?

I'm seeing four jets in the sky.

Oh, what is this?

What, what are you doing on your side?

Who's flying?

Is anybody flying in this?

And what does that actually look like?

The ones you are seeing flying right now is me and Aerospace.

Those are the only two that are here right now that you can actually see in the air.

So I am the one leading that formation.

That is called the Diamond Formation.

It was the signature formation of many, many, many flight demonstrations here in VRJ.

And in the real world.

I am the one leading that formation.

You can see me in the very front.

Aerospace is on my right wing.

So you can see him on the right side of the formation.

He is on my right wing.

He's a very good pilot.

And right now we're doing the double farvel.

We're coming in from the right.

Me and the number four position slot pilot are both inverted.

And we're passing by center point.

And we are going to break.

So.

The slot pilot is Tony Maloney.

And our left wing is Tholome Hill.

So those are the two pilots.

They're amazing as well.

Yeah.

How does one discover they have the skill to fly a virtual reality plane this way?

Like, are you guys like experts at Microsoft Flight Simulator or like Nintendo 64?

How did you get to this point?

The N64, that's way out of second of our final speed.

Well, maybe with you.

Sorry, N64 is my speed.

Help me here.

Well, I mean, on my side, it's always just been a passion for aviation.

Anybody that you see on the video, anybody can do it.

The control schemes on VRChat are fairly simplistic compared to, obviously, a real F-18.

But it's just dedication.

It's dedication.

That's all it is.

It's repetition.

Flying in these formations.

Knowing what's happening next to where you can just close your eyes.

Feel the air.

Obviously, this is VR, so you can't feel the air.

But just having that dedication.

I mean, this is awesome right here.

Nebula, you want to take over and tell them what this is?

This is the Diamond 360.

This is our closest formation.

You see it as a path in the crowd.

That is 18 real-life inches of separation between the four aircraft.

So, if you actually collided, we would see a crash or something like that if pixels touched?

Yes, you wouldn't see an explosion.

We have it set differently.

One of us would just fall drastically out of formation.

That's what would happen.

Okay.

Yeah.

Interesting.

Well, obviously, with VRChat, with the latency and everything, it's on different internet speeds, it's a little bit more tricky, but also, it's more fun.

It's more of a challenge.

It's where you're like, okay, boss may fall back from my side or somewhere.

You just got to hold your position and know where you are going and confident in it.

All right.

So, you said you had six pilots, right?

And so, we've got the four of you on here.

I know I met one of them the other day who was like a Harvard student, like a master's at Harvard or something.

Who else are the pilots that you currently have?

So, I am the boss, call sign Nambuli.

Like I said, I'm the one in the front.

This is my right wing.

Thala Mule, who is not here, is my left wing.

Tony Maloney, who is my slot pilot, who is under the formation, is not here.

This is six, the other soloist that you have not met.

This is the other, this ends the one, two, three, four, five, six of the pilots.

Gotcha.

You're talking to him.

And this is the narrator.

Zuko actually does the narration.

He does all the techie stuff with the narration, which I don't know how to do.

So, and I also fly media, so we'll actually have somebody in the back of my jet, which is a two-seater, and we will fly along the side of the formation, and we'll get media shots, photos, video from up in the air.

And, you know, we fly along the right side of the diamond formation, which, you know, if you want to see right now, we'll be literally flying a good distance away, but flying along the right side of that formation.

Very, very cool.

And it's taken this core team of pilots.

How long have you all been, yeah, I'm seeing that, that break.

How long have you all been flying together?

About the same time this team has existed.

A lot of, actually, all of these people you see in front of us, in front of you, have been here since day one.

So, about a year in total of the time.

About a year. We've been flying together.

I've been flying in VR chat for about three years.

Okay.

Did any of you have previous experience?

Well, one of you was with Black Aces, as I recall.

Was there any other experience with...

I was a part of the VR chat recreational Blue Angels.

So, that is just a Blue Angel version in VR chat.

You just do the same maneuvers.

Zuko was a part of the same team.

Hoku, this is his first ever flight demonstration team he's been on.

Wow, okay.

I probably have the least experience out of all of us, but I picked up quickly, I think.

Flying in real life or are you just like a servicing engineering beyond?

Currently, I'm just an engineer.

I just write the procedures of how to fix the C-130s.

Personally, I've never flown a real aircraft.

Obviously, I've flown in VR chat, VTOL VR, Microsoft Flight Simulator.

I've always had that passion of flying, but I don't have the time nor the money to do that.

But I have gone to an amazing aviation school when I got my bachelor's degree in aerospace engineering.

And that was down in Florida at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.

Sure.

To all my eagles out there, if anyone's listening.

But, yeah, I love that school and seeing those Cessnas, those Diamond Skyhawks, and even the Thunderbirds.

Thunderbirds coming down for the Daytona 500.

I mean, just seeing them all the time and having that flight, just seeing it was amazing.

But personally, I've never flown once.

I've never flown.

I've been in an airplane before, but I've never taken over the controls.

But I'll happily take over the controls if they need me to.

It's beautiful that such a abstract idea.

Like an air show turns into ministry.

And I want to get into some of the ministry implications.

But I do know that, you know, there there's an interesting relationship here with with the Blue Angels and like there's been some some some tribute work or some things that you've done.

And so journey rocker.

Are you the best one to speak into that?

Yeah.

So I'm going to be very, very, very brief as I can.

So my journey with the Blue Angels goes back to when my grandfather was affiliated with the U.S. Navy.

And when I was really, really young, that was the first air show my grandfather ever took me to.

And I fell in such love with the Blue Angels.

Just, you know, the way that they fly and they're so coordinated, they're so close, their maneuvers are just so incredible that I really fell in love with it.

My grandfather, you know, begged me.

He's like, you know, I want you somehow, if you can, to get involved in the Navy or get involved with the Blue Angels or aviation in some way.

You know, later on in my life, I unfortunately sustained a very, very serious injury to my left shoulder where I have a little bit of paralysis that goes into my hand so that, you know, prohibits me from being able to do certain things and, you know, certain motory functions with it.

So being able to fly in real life was out of the question.

But, you know, I wanted to carry on my grandfather's legacy when he had passed away in 2020.

So I came on to VRChat at one point and I was just messing around in an aviation instance and I discovered and came across a Blue Angels instance and I was like, wow, like this is so cool.

It looks so realistic.

You know, I could actually sit in the back of a Blue Angels jet and be a Blue Angels pilot.

This is amazing.

I wonder if the actual Blue Angels team knows about this.

You know, I wonder if they really know about it.

And there was at that time a Blue Angels team and they were a bunch of like adults that were on there at the time.

And I met one of the pilots and I don't remember his name.

I believe his first name was Jonathan, but, you know, getting off topic.

But I met him and we started talking about it.

And he said, yeah, the Blue Angels really don't know too much about it.

You know, they're the U.S. Navy.

You know, I really don't think they would have any interest in a VR game.

And I said, well, I think you're wrong.

I said, I really think that they should know about this.

So I ended up later on, as Boyd was saying, joining a Blue Angels team on VR chat, the same team that Boyd was a part of, like a Blue Angels trippy thing where we portrayed them, you know, and did all their maneuvers.

And I actually took what we were doing, this idea, what you see on VR, and brought it over to Long Island Republic Airport, which is where the Blue Angels do their show here on Long Island.

And I met with the executive director of the airport, her name is Judith Zalewski, and the president of the airport, Tony, and brought the idea.

I was like, you know, I really want the Blue Angels to see what we're doing.

I think it's a special thing that we're doing.

And we could put people, you know, via VR into the cockpit of Blue Angels jets and teach them about the formation.

And they fell in love with the idea.

I have a friend of mine.

His name is Chris Fonte.

He works for Customer XR and Pioneer VR Gaming, in which he takes what we do on VR, and he brings it to an actual event.

You know, he has a whole virtual reality setup where people can actually sit down in the back of these jets that you see behind us, actually watch a live air show from a massive screen.

And we did that in the airport for the Blue Angels.

We actually were able to do and work with the Blue Angels air show just last year.

I got to meet Commander Armitas of the Blue Angels at the time, Jack Kightley, Amanda Lee, the first female pilot to ever fly with the Blue Angels.

She made history.

So I got to be a part of that.

And when I met Void, you know, through the Holy Aces, you know, I wanted to spread a little bit of what I encountered with that team, what I've learned, onto this team.

And I'm proud to announce that we will be working with the Blue Angels for this upcoming air show for 2026, commemorating the signing of the Declaration of Independence here on Long Island.

It's an amazing opportunity, not just for myself, but for this entire team.

Everybody here has been absolutely incredible.

And I love Void's vision for what he's doing for all the church groups that we work here, including for yours, Jeff.

It's an amazing opportunity what he's doing.

And we've touched so many lives here on VRChat.

Anyway, so so interesting, man.

How how often do you guys practice a week?

How long?

Like how many hours per week to do the pilots directly?

So practice.

I like to keep it.

I like to, you know, personal life might get in the way.

I like to be very loose on terms of practices.

We practice on a consistent schedule of Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

So Monday and Wednesday are diamond practices.

Those two diamond and soloist are two separate types of show, I guess.

So the pilots one through four, that's considered the diamond formation.

The one that, you know, the four jets you saw group together, that's a diamond.

And you're going to see two others that are doing, you know, a bunch of crazy loops and turns and high speed passes.

Those are your two solas.

So Monday, diamond practices for about an hour.

Tuesday, solos practice.

Wednesday is diamond practice.

Thursday, solos practice.

And on Friday, we bring it all together and we practice as a team on Fridays.

Okay.

Roughly like how many hours to 18?

Like what's what's a rough hour count?

We practice about two hours a day.

Have you guys ever actually been in the same space physically together?

We have not.

At least I haven't.

I have.

Me and one of our other pilots, Tony, actually.

We're from Long Island and we've actually been several times together.

And Tony is an incredible person.

He's actually worked with me last year and helped out with Republic Airport.

And he actually flew in that demonstration, which you just saw for the point is he flew the C-130.

He flies the Fat Albert.

You know, C-130 in that video.

So when we did that air show at Jones Beach, he actually demonstrated flying the actual C-130.

C-130.

Wow.

Man, all of a sudden now I'm body conscious for the C-130.

That's, that's horrible.

What a shame.

But so like you guys are arguably like for a year, you, you all been connected together via virtual reality and discord, building relationships, practicing to do this, this whole thing together.

Now, you, you mentioned to me, you mentioned earlier that some of your volunteer teams are Bible studies and, and you know, I know Journey Rocker talked about being on, on doing this for churches and ministries.

Like what, what's the ministry implications of, of what we're seeing here?

Y'all tell me a little bit about that.

So I, I must say the ministry here, um, it's, it's fairly light from what you compared to see to other ministries in terms of Bible studies and prayer meetings, because you know, we're mostly doing this, but every once in a while we like to gather and, you know, talk about Christ and have a prayer meeting and a Bible study, you know, every once in a while.

But, uh, in terms of ministry, we're, we're, we're really focused on doing this, but, um, I am currently working on setting up a consistent Bible study and a consistent prayer meeting, um, that will, uh, definitely improve our ministry setting.

I know at one point you were doing these, doing performances for like churches in virtual reality.

Is that still a thing that, that you're doing and try to network with some of the churches in that space?

Yes.

Um, I am currently planning a air show on the end of August with VR church.

I, I, I am so grateful that I met such a community that would be as supportive as they are.

know, these, these services, um, I, I couldn't ask for a better, a better community.

I, I, they're family to me.

These guys are family churches, family, everybody's family.

I, I, I have got to say, I've made some of the greatest memories alongside the, uh, the

church community here in VR chat and in the digital space.

It's a, uh, a Christian ministry and we help churches in virtual reality.

What's the response, uh, to something like that from a, from a physical life pastor?

I haven't told mine yet.

Um, I've told a few friends, but they're a little leery of just like, sure.

Would this thing last?

Will this thing not?

And, but I usually keep it to myself, but overall, I, I think this would be a good idea.

Cause I've never seen the VR chat aviation or VR chat community, Christian community, seeing this presence.

You're on VR chat is amazing.

And the people you've met, it's, it's incredible.

And definitely.

I thought this was like, oh, one off thing.

No, this is certainly not a one off thing.

Yeah.

Ministry.

I think you can go to Africa and minister to people or go somewhere and minister to people.

But most importantly, I think being here on VR chat, because there's a lot of people in here that go to these red light districts or whatever, just to get that fun.

But knowing that these Christians are here and willing to go to these spots and minister in unique ways, like just doing these air shows, people can join and like, Hey, I like the air show.

And it's like, Hey, let's go minister and talk about Jesus Christ and what he's done for you.

It's, it's impressive of what void has done and sticking with him with what this means.

It's very important.

It's re it's really unique.

Honestly, when have you ever seen a Christian aviation team?

So dedicated to Christ, so dedicated to everyone and actually respects one another.

Yeah.

Usually when you fly these jets, you get an ego.

You're like, I'm better than everybody else, but not here.

Everyone understands their position and they want to learn.

So that's why I'm very stiff on the screen.

So I'm just keeping the headset on.

By the way, to it's in it's in VR chat, which is the dark space.

And so you are rallying Christians on one of the darker spaces of of virtual reality right now.

Three, it's led by a 15 year old high school kid for who's managed to recruit 18 volunteers, the majority of which are adults.

Like it's this is a and this is why it's like, you know, when dark boy told me this when I met him a year or so ago, I'm like, yeah, whatever.

You know, you know, just listen, I hear people tell me crazy stuff all the time.

And to be to be honest, I like fact checked them a little bit.

I started digging around and asking, hey, do you know this guy Dark Void?

And they were like, yeah, they started telling me the story.

And so I'm like, crap, this guy's really doing this for real.

I love it.

It's it's incredible because it is so off the wall, out of the box, so necessary in that space to rally the troops that are doing ministry in VR chat.

Yeah, the sad thing in all of this and I'm putting on my physical church ministry hat.

The sad thing is, is that you all don't feel like you're getting support from the church leaders because you've been burned previously, I'm assuming, or you've had conversations with people that are not supportive of this space.

Oh, yeah, absolutely.

And so like for me, man, I want to like apologize for that.

Like you, you should be able to have those conversations with, with, with your church leaders and, and those that are spiritually guiding you and, and, and have confidence to be able to, you know, hey, like, this is what I'm doing.

This is some of the fruit that we're seeing, you know, even if nothing else, if they don't get it, man, listen, I'll be praying for you.

I want to go off of what you said.

And I want to, I want to say a scripture.

And I think, I think that'll, that'll really wrap it around.

So I knew, I knew once this team started kicking off, I knew how bad VR chat was.

I knew we weren't going to be liked outside of the Christian community.

I knew we were going to be attacked and I stuck by a scripture.

If the world hates you, just know that the world hated me first.

Yeah.

I stuck by that scripture and I got through all the pain, all the suffering, all the tears.

And I, I, I kept, I kept going and I pushed, I pushed, I pushed, I pushed and I pushed and I knew, I knew I was going to get something at the end of the, at the end of the tunnel.

And, uh, I got to say with the amount of you guys that have been here to support me, support what I've built.

I thank you.

There's, there's, there's nothing I can say more, nothing I can do more.

I mean, I was your age, uh, to be honest, I was a dark void.

I think this is going to be honest to God truth.

I was actually probably a little younger than you.

Um, when I, I can say I first had my calling to be a digital pastor.

It was, um, it was a summer 19, it was 1992.

I was 12 years old, maybe 14 years old at that point as a, as a middle school student and, um, eight, maybe seventh or eighth grade.

Um, and, and I cannot tell you the number of people in spiritual leadership over in my life, over spiritual leadership in my life, pastors, um, friends, uh, people who told me, Hey Jeff, it doesn't work that way.

You can't be a pastor with, with computers.

You can't be a pastor.

Uh, I mean, in the inner, this was so early, like the internet was theoretical.

It was like military only.

It wasn't even like released.

AOL was like beta, uh, in, in, in the early nineties.

And so, um, it's been, I was not showing the, even the spiritual maturity of what you just shared.

When, when I was your age, I was listening to those people instead of standing on scripture and saying, if they hate what I'm doing, well, they hated what God was doing, what Jesus was doing.

The world hated Jesus too.

And, and, and let me tell you, if, if you continue on in this space or even if it's outside, just life in general, um, as you stand as a Christian, the world will always hate you.

Um, even, even as a, as a Christian doing the stuff that, that I'm currently doing, there are Christians in the world who hate what I'm doing and have called out, uh, you know, myself by name, my organization, the church digital by name, uh, down, uh, you know, uh, in disgust centered around some of the stuff that we're doing with, um, with digital missionaries and digital ministry.

And virtual reality churches and the like, um, some fun stories on that, that I'll tell for a different day, but I am so proud of you for doing what you're doing.

I'm so proud of this team, uh, for standing in, in, in a dark space, uh, shedding light, uh, and, and really gathering and rallying Christians who need to be shown some light in the dark space.

And so, man, thanks for, thanks for doing what you guys are doing.

Do you guys have any, like, um, what, what are some, what's the next like five years, three years look like?

Do you have any like big events or, or big rallying points?

What, what's like going on in the future for, for the holy aces here?

I think at this moment, we're taking it day by day, but I mean, things, we got a lot of things planned, a lot of things that are unplanned and especially getting our voices out to you and learning, especially to a podcast, because people want to hear more about this.

And I know just in general showing aviation, aviation is cool in general, but having that package of, Hey, here's some aviation, cool aviation stuff, but here's the ministry as well.

Like it's not, Jesus does so much, allows us to do so much and gives us so many gifts that these are our gifts to the world.

We want to show what we can do and also minister to these people.

So, I mean, that's, I guess that's my final word to anybody else.

Um, man, I don't even know where to begin.

Um, I've been doing this on VR chat, the whole aviation and flying around and working with teams and doing the stuff on the outside with the real life aviation team is for quite some time now.

And I have to admit, it's a lot of work.

It's a lot of patience.

And, you know, I think Void said it best, you know, that you have a lot of people there that really try to bring you down and it makes things extremely hard and difficult.

Uh, and it's, it creates obstacles and hurdles that we as a team all have to get over.

And, and, and that's been such a hard part throughout this entire journey, but I'm so confident that with what we have to share and what we can bring to people that really want to be aviation enthusiasts, want to be closer to God and, you know, sort of new heights and, you know, set great boundaries and goals for themselves.

You know, I think, you know, this is going to be a great opportunity and who knows what the future holds for us.

You know, this can lead to something bigger for the upcoming years.

So, you know, like Matt said it best, you know, we take everything on a day by day basis.

I mean, there was a point where we didn't even have our own instance to fly in and, you know, you see what you see in front of you right now and all the work that and support that we have from everybody that's within this team and all the work that we're all putting into this together.

And, you know, look how incredible this is, you know, what you're seeing in front of you.

Beautiful.

So somebody's out there got a crazy idea.

I mean, maybe it is.

I want to do a Christian astronaut flight team.

I want to do a virtual reality.

I want to do a jet skiing thing where I jump a shark.

I want to do.

I don't know.

But somebody's got some crazy idea.

Jump the shark thing in jet ski would be pretty cool.

Put Christ in the center of it.

Whatever it is, put Christ in the center of it.

Hey, build on that for two minutes.

I think that Christ is everything.

I think you should make Christ everything.

Why?

Because Christ is everything.

Here's a fine-toothed example.

You said it yourself, Jeff, a 15-year-old.

15-year-olds nowadays, I go around my school.

I see them vaping.

I see them drinking alcohol.

I see them having unsafe sex.

I tried to build something.

I tried to do something, and I'm still trying, and I'm hoping I can do it.

But I didn't do it.

He didn't do it.

He didn't do it.

He didn't do it.

Nobody did it.

Christ did it.

I think you put Christ at the center of something, it can become something magical.

And take it from the 15-year-old who met Jesus on an operation table having heart surgery.

You can do anything, as long as Christ's in the center of it.

I'm trying to wrap up the show, and you just told me you found Christ when you were on an operating table having heart surgery.

Maybe you should lead with that next time so we can have – we're going to have to have you back on because I want to hear that story.

So about two years ago, I was riding a bike with a few friends, and I noticed my heart started pounding really, really fast.

And I felt weak.

I felt like I was about to pass out, like I was about to have a cardiac arrest.

They took me to the hospital, found out I had WPW, Wolf-Parkinson-White syndrome.

And what that is is when you get energetic and your heart starts pumping and the blood starts flowing, it gets into a rhythm where it can get upwards of 250 to 300 beats per minute, and that is lethal.

Yeah.

I had to be taken into the operation room as soon as possible.

I had a quick ablation, which is basically they burn off the nerve inside the heart.

So they made entry in the heart, and they burned.

They put the gas mask on me, and I heard this ringing just in my ear.

It got louder and louder and louder and louder and louder until I was just overwhelmed.

Like I was shedding tears on the operation table of just Christ's presence.

And during this time, I was young.

I knew of Christ, but I didn't really, like, know Him.

But it's one of those feelings where, like, you know it's Him.

And I just got overwhelmed with His love, His comfort, His presence, His warmth.

And ever since that day, just right then and there, there it was.

That's the birth of Darkoid.

Wow.

Ever since then, I've been doing okay.

I'm alive.

I have a better chance to be struck by lightning five times than to come back.

So I'm okay.

I still got to get it checked every once in a while.

I actually got to get an EKG here in a few weeks.

Yeah.

But other than that, I'm alive.

I'm healthy.

I can run.

I can play basketball.

I'm in peak physical condition.

And I wanted to ask, since we're, you know, ending off the stream and we're wrapping it up, like you said,

Actually, I find it really ironic that, like, some of the other areas are anti what you're doing as light Christianity as what you're doing baked in.

You know, it's, man, the metaverse is just so unique right now.

Like, it's so, especially VR chat, it's the wild, wild west.

And so normally, there's lots of sound effects.

We're just seeing video, not the audio of it for technical reasons.

But I'm guessing it's all, like, you know, engines blaring in, actually, in VR chat.

That's a lot of engine noises.

It is very, very loud with those jets.

You can barely hear yourself think.

And not all of them just having four.

I would certainly love to give you all a video of the entire six because we have a maneuver that is really unique to the Holy Aces.

I'll tell you, I, you know, even in, like, basic video games, I can't fly worth anything.

Like, literally, if I'm, if I'm playing PS5 and I got to fly something, I hand the controller to my son and I'm like, okay, you beat this level because I can't.

I can't.

I, I, I am, I'm flight, like, um, it was funny, you know, uh, Journey Rockers, you know, mocking me because I mentioned N64.

I think the last flying game I was actually good at was Star Fox 64.

Anything since Star Fox 64, I am garbage on, uh, at the flying levels.

Other things I can do, okay, but, but nothing, uh, uh, at, at flying.

Uh, what are you, like, flying to the Mars?

I'm zoomed all the way.

I am currently gaining altitude to come back down even faster.

And what you are going to see is a cone of air just in wrap my aircraft.

I'm VRChat's best cameraman, not really.

We got, we got a lot and we got plenty of ideas.

I've, I've got a, uh, I've got a meta, meta three quest or whatever.

I was telling them, I don't use it as much as I used to, but man, I, I would, I would

But yeah, let's, uh, we can talk offline and, and, and figure it out.
