Jehovah Series: Part 1, Jehovah Titles Intro

Welcome to this biblical study series of the Jehovah Titles.

The Jehovah titles are extremely significant in that they tell us who God is toward his people.

Each of these Jehovah titles gives us another aspect of who God is in behalf of his covenant people.

There are various titles for God in the Old Testament Hebrew.

Of these titles, Elohim is the first one used in the Bible.

Elohim is God as the creator of all things.

This title, Elohim, is used over 2,500 times in the Bible.

But yet the most prominent title is Jehovah.

Jehovah is used over 5,500 times in the Bible.

Jehovah is the same God, the creator of all things, in covenant relation to those whom he has created.

See, we can say my God, but we cannot say my Jehovah, because Jehovah means my God.

Jehovah communicates that personal interaction of God with his covenant people.

In other words, these Jehovah titles are going to tell us how God works with us, his people, what he is toward us, his people, and what he is faithful to be toward us, his people.

God made a covenant with Abraham a long time ago, which begins to be recorded in Genesis 12.

This same covenant is fulfilled in Jesus Christ.

God is now in covenant relation to all who have believed on his Son Jesus Christ.

These Jehovah titles are one way which we can clearly see what God is toward his people as Jehovah.

As God was Jehovah to the nation of Israel, so he is Jehovah to us today, his covenant people, through the redemptive work of the Lord Jesus Christ.

The foundational verses for this study, which are the actual verses which got us started on this study, are found in 2 Corinthians chapter 1, verses 19 and 20.

2 Corinthians 1:19

And from your paperwork it reads, from the EMTV translation, For the Son of God Jesus Christ, who was preached among you by us, by me, Sylvanus, and Timothy, was not yes and no, but in him was yes.

For all the promises of God in him are yes, and in him amen to the glory of God through us.

In other words, all the promises of God find their yes and amen in Christ.

Christ is the fulfillment of all these promises throughout the Old Testament.

God had many promises to his people, the nation of Israel, and to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob before there was a nation of Israel.

And as God continued to promise and make promises, we find all these fulfillments in Christ.

And we will see this throughout this series.

Each one of these Jehovah titles in communicating what God is toward his people, we see that God is just that toward us because Jesus Christ died, shed his blood for the sins of the whole world, and through that shed blood, we have an eternal covenant with God as Jehovah.

All of the ancient prophecies and promises from Jehovah find their fulfillment in Christ, and we are the blessed recipients of these prophecies and promises.

Ephesians 1 3 reads, Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ.

Saints, we are blessed with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly realms in Christ.

Every single blessing that God the Father has poured out has been poured out to us because of the work of the Lord Jesus Christ.

From John 1 16, for of his Christ's fullness we have all received, and grace for grace, of Christ's fullness we have all received.

We are so extremely blessed because Jesus Christ died for us.

We are so blessed beyond our recognition that we, according to the scriptures, are blessed with every spiritual blessing, even to the point that of Christ's fullness we have all received.

See, these prophecies and promises have two general categories.

Number one, all nations are blessed through Abraham, and number two, the glory to come with Christ ruling over all.

Jesus Christ is going to rule over everything, and that's this promised glory to come that is going to come through the Christ.

We are going to look at this second category first, to see that all the promises of God find their yes and amen in the Christ.

The first quote from 1 Kings 9, then I will establish the throne of my kingdom.

I'm sorry, then I will establish the throne of thy kingdom over Israel forever, according as I promised to David thy father, saying, There shall not fail thee a man upon the throne of Israel.

See, God had promised to Solomon, King David's son, that there would not fail a man upon the throne of Israel, just as he had promised David.

So God had promised that there would be a man on the throne of Israel continually.

And as we're going to see from the Scriptures, the one who would permanently be on that throne is none other than the promised Christ.

The second reference from Isaiah 11.

Now this section of Isaiah is all a prophecy about the promised Christ.

Starting in verse 1, and there shall come forth a root out of the stalk of Jesse.

Now Jesse was David's father, so meaning there's going to come forth a shoot, a branch out of the stalk of Jesse.

And this would come through David.

And a branch out of his roots shall bear fruit.

So there's going to come fruit out of him.

And the spirit of Jehovah shall rest upon him, and the spirit of wisdom and understanding, and the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of Jehovah.

Now these qualities describe what was manifested through the Christ when he came.

In verse three, and his delight shall be in the fear of Jehovah in honor respect of him.

That's what the Christ would delight in.

And he shall not judge after the sight of his eyes, neither decide after the hearing of his ears.

But with righteousness shall he judge the poor, and decide with equity for the meek of the earth, and he shall smite the earth with the rod of his mouth.

Now this is still future.

He shall smite the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips shall he slay the wicked.

And the righteous shall be the girdle of his wa and righteousness shall be the girdle of his waist, and faithfulness the girdle of his loins, and the wolf shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid, and the calf and the young lion, and the fatling together.

Now this is impossible today, saints.

You know, if a wolf lays down with a lamb, the lamb becomes dinner.

But in what's to come everything is going to live in harmony.

The rest of verse six reads, And a little child shall lead them, and the cow and the bear shall feed, their young ones shall lie down together.

This is impossible today, saints, but not in the coming heavens and earth, in which Christ shall rule, and the lion shall eat straw like the ox, and the sucking child shall play on the hole of the asp, and the weaned child shall put his hand on the adder's den, these poisonous snakes, and shall not be harmed.

Verse 9 reads, They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain, for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of Jehovah as the waters cover the sea.

Now, today we don't find this, not even close.

That the earth shall be full of the knowledge of Jehovah.

That doesn't mean a head knowledge like we think of in the Western world, but a practical knowledge.

See that God's word will be lived all over the face of the earth.

How is this going to come to pass?

Again, through the promised Christ.

Look at verse 10.

And it shall come to pass in that day, in that day, that the root of Jesse, the Christ, shall s that stands for an ensign of the peoples, for a sign, a banner.

Unto him shall the nation seek, and his resting place shall be glorious.

See, the promised Christ is going to bring that glory to come, where there's a new heavens and new earth, wherein everything dwells in harmony.

And this is the promise of the glory to come that is only promised through the Christ.

No other man could bring this glory to come but Christ Jesus Himself.

More about this glory to come, and about the Christ who will bring it.

The third reference out of Isaiah 9, for unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given, and the government shall be upon his shoulder.

In other words, he is going to rule or reign.

And his name shall be called wonderful, counselor, mighty God, everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Of the increase of his government and of peace there shall be no end.

Do you see those words?

No end.

His government government is going to be forever.

This is the promise Christ.

Upon the throne of David and upon his kingdom to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from henceforth henceforth, even forever.

The zeal of Jehovah of hosts will perform this.

See, Jehovah is zealous to make this come to pass.

This was promised way back in Isaiah, saints.

The result of this we still haven't seen, but we surely see it in motion.

The Christ has come, he has died for the sins of the world.

All things are put beneath his feet, and there's coming a day where we will see that in full manifestation, where the reality of reference number four there comes into being.

From Revelation 19, and he has on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, King of Kings and Lord of Lords.

This is the Lord Jesus Christ, saints, and nobody is going to strip this privilege, this high and mighty privilege of being Lord and King over everything and everyone in the future.

Hebrews 11, 13 reads, These all died in faith, talking about these witnesses of old, not having received the promises.

So promises were given.

But having seen them and greeted greeting them from afar off, and having confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims in the earth, they knew that this world was not their home, just like us, still having not seen the fullness of the promises in manifestation.

For they that say such things make it manifest that they are seeking a country of their own.

And if indeed they had been mindful of that country from which they went out, they would have had opportunity to return.

But now they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly.

Wherefore God is not ashamed of them to be called their God, for he hath prepared for them a city.

Now they s had these promises, saints, back then, that there's going to be a new heavens and a new earth, a country called the New Jerusalem, this new city, that's a heavenly city.

So they considered themselves as strangers and pilgrims on the earth, just the same as us today.

And if they had been mindful of that which they had left, then they might have had opportunity to return, but they kept their sights on what would come, the glory to come through the Christ in that promised city, Jerusalem.

The sixth reference is that of Hebrews 12 regarding these promises.

Now watch this.

It says in verse 26, His voice, God's voice, shook the earth at that time, but now he has promised, yet once more I will shake not only the earth, but also heaven.

Now this expression, quote, yet once more, end of quote, indicates the removal of what can be shaken, the removable things.

That is, the created things, so that what is not shaken might remain.

Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom which cannot be shaken, saints, this kingdom has come into existence for us because of the work of Jesus Christ.

He redeemed us and saved us, and now, according to Colossians 1.13, we have been transferred into his kingdom.

His kingdom.

This kingdom, saints, and the things of it cannot be shaken.

God promised once more he's going to cause not only the earth to be shaken, but also the heavens, that everything that can be shaken would be removed.

And those that cannot be shaken would remain.

So we, since we are receiving a kingdom which cannot be shaken, we hold on to this grace.

Hold on to this kingdom and the things of the kingdom which came to us by grace.

We hold to this grace.

By it we may serve God acceptably with reverence and awe.

See, Jesus Christ, through him would come the glory.

Through him, all these promises of God, of yet what's to come, the glory to come, not only have come through the Christ, but have been established by God through him that they will never change.

This kingdom is forever.

And Jesus Christ is Lord of Lord and King of kings forever.

And we get to take part in this wonderful glory, saints.

A great majority of the promises in the Old Testament are tied into the glory to come, and that all is manifested through the Christ.

The other category of promises is that all nations would be blessed through Abraham.

This category also is fulfilled in the Christ.

In other words, Jesus Christ is the key to all the promises of God being fulfilled.

So all nations being blessed through Abraham.

Watch these promises.

Reference number one.

You are the sons of the prophets and of the covenant which God made with your fathers, saying unto Abraham, and in thy seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed.

Well, there it is.

God had said to Abraham that in his seed all the families of the earth would be blessed, all the nations, all the tribes, all would be blessed.

Verse 26, Unto you first God, having raised up his servant, talking about Jesus, sent him to bless you in turning away every one of you from your iniquities.

Jesus Christ, or Jesus as the Christ, was sent as God's servant to bless Israel, to bring them into the fullness of the promises.

And then also that we as the Gentile, the Gentiles, the rest of the nations, the families of the earth, would also be blessed in the Christ.

Reference number two again regarding Abraham.

Now to Abraham were the promises spoken.

Again, it was to or through Abraham that all these promises were spoken, and to his seed.

See it?

It would be the progeny of Abraham, not just by bloodline, but also by faith, believing on Abraham, who is the father of us all who believe, according to Romans 4.

So again, reference number two, now to Abraham were the promises spoken and to his seed.

He saith not, and to seeds as of many, but as of one, and to thy seed, which is Christ.

So all these blessings and promises that were spoken would come to Abraham and to his seed, referring to the Christ.

Now, saints, our placement is in Christ, as Colossians 130 says, that we are placed in Christ Jesus by God's doing.

In Christ Jesus, that's our placement.

So we are blessed with all these promises spoken to Abraham and to his seed, which is the Christ.

Reference number three, for not through the law was the promise to Abraham or to his seed, that he should be the heir of the world, but through the righteousness of faith.

Wow.

So we too, through faith, believing in the Christ and the promises of God, we are also heirs of the world.

Wow, what a promise of God.

That too finds its yes and amen in the Christ.

Reference number four from Titus chapter one.

In hope of eternal life, eternal life, which God who cannot lie, promised before times eternal.

Time's eternal.

Ages past, eternal.

God has promised eternal life.

And how does this come to pass?

Saints, had Jesus Christ not died for us, we could not have eternal life.

Sin would not be paid for, and we would yet be dead in our sins.

We would be separated from God forever had Jesus Christ not died for the sins of the world.

All the promises of God find their yes and amen in him and only in him.

Reference number five from Hebrews 8.6.

Now, this starts showing us the difference between the covenants, the two covenants being the covenant given to Abraham, which is fulfilled in Christ.

That covenant was put on hold, so to speak, where the old covenant came in, the law of Moses, which then that was fulfilled in Christ, so that the promises given to Abraham, that older covenant would be fulfilled in Christ.

That older covenant, as strange as it might sound, is called the new covenant.

But all that means, that word new, simply means it's new to us, but it's different from the old one.

So it emphasizes the difference between that covenant given to Abraham and the covenant given through Moses, the law.

Let's read the verse.

From Hebrews 8:6, reference number five.

Hebrews 8:6

But now hath he obtained a ministry the more excellent.

Talking about Jesus Christ received this ministry, it's more excellent, by so much as he is also the mediator of a better covenant, which has been enacted upon better promises.

You go look throughout the Old Testament given to Old Testament, Old Covenant given to Moses, the law of Moses, you look at the promises therein, those promises are very limited.

Those promises are greatly physical.

They would be brought into a promised land.

There were boundaries to that promised land.

We inherited.

The kingdom of God.

We are citizens of heaven.

Much greater promises.

They were promised to live long on the earth by keeping the covenant.

We are given eternal life in the better covenant.

Wow.

They were never promised bodies that would never corrupt or decay.

We are saints.

We are.

We have a better covenant with better promises.

And that's the point of Hebrews 8.6 in that context.

Reference number 6.

For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son that whosoever believes on him should not perish, but have eternal life.

What a promise.

What a benefit.

See, what God promised Abraham is fulfilled in Christ.

Reference number seven from Romans 8.

Watch this.

It says in verse 16, the Spirit itself bears witness with our spirit that we are the children of God.

And if children, then heirs.

Heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ.

A better covenant with better promises.

Look at that.

Israel was promised through the law of Moses that they would be blessed by God.

But not heirs.

Not heirs to this degree to be joint heirs with the Christ, to share fully with him.

But through this new covenant, the covenant promised Abraham, that's fulfilled in Christ, we are saints.

We are heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ.

Well, it's going to take us much of eternity to gather that truth in.

We are heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ.

How blessed we are through the Christ.

Reference number eight from 1 Kings 8, this is an interesting statement.

Says, Blessed be Jehovah that hath given rest unto his people Israel, according to all that he promised.

There has not failed one word of all his good promise, which he has promised by Moses his servant.

Wow, saints, there has not failed one word of all his good promise, which he promised by Moses, his servant.

When God promises something, he brings it to pass.

Has God promised the glory to come?

Absolutely.

It is repeated through the scriptures.

Has God promised to bless the nations in the Old Testament?

Absolutely.

How would the glory to come and the blessings through Abraham be fulfilled in the Christ?

That in him all the promises of God find their yes and amen.

And it's only in the Christ.

Not only that, but look at these last two references on your paperwork, Ephesians 3.11.

According to the purpose of the ages which He, God purposed in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Saints, the purpose of the ages which he purposed in Christ Jesus our Lord, all of time is funneled into the purpose of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

All of time is gathered in around the work of the Lord Jesus Christ.

That all the promises of God find their yes and amen in him, and everything is with a focus of his work, the Lord Jesus Christ.

Wow.

This next reference from Colossians 1, it says, Because by him, talking about the Christ, all things were created.

Those in the heavens and those on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities.

All things have been created through him and for him.

And he is before all things, and in him, watch this, in him all things are held together.

So not only is the purpose of the ages purposed in Christ Jesus, but all things, that's regarding all time.

Now it says all things are held together by him.

All things and all of time is all revolving around the Christ.

Saints look at it like this.

This is a simple point of reference that helped me really get it.

Jesus Christ, the promised Christ, is like the hub of a wheel.

Every spoke of every moment of time ties into that hub.

The rest of the spokes, all things are tied into that hub, Jesus Christ.

Without the hub, that whole wheel falls together.

Yet every spoke, every spoke is tied into him.

Without him, it's not part of that wheel.

See, all that whole wheel of time and the wheel of all things is all held together and revolves around the Christ.

All the promises of God find their yes and amen in him.

He is the purpose of all the ages.

Without him everything falls apart.

And we are placed in him, in Christ, according to 1 Corinthians 1 30.

Boy, it's just going to take much time for us to gather that in, saints.

Keep reading your Bible.

Let it speak to your hearts.

Look what God has done for us through Christ.

Keep your eyes open and seek out the Father's insight as to the greatness of your placement in Christ Jesus into all, all the promises and benefits of God that are in him.

We will be seeing in this series that God is the same powerful and delivering God that we read about in the Old Testament Scriptures.

He is the same Jehovah to us.

We are in covenant relation to Jehovah through the Lord Jesus Christ.

Now all those promises of God are fulfilled in Christ and we are in him.

Well, praise God throughout eternity, saints.

We will be praising God for his glorious grace toward us through Christ Jesus, wherein all the promises of God find their yes and amen.

And each one of these Jehovah titles is going to give us a general outline of God and who he is toward us, his covenant people.

Then in the new covenant, as you continue to read, gaps will fill in.

You'll get a greater and more detailed understanding of these Jehovah titles as you simply read through the New Covenant writings, who you are and what is true in Christ.

Father, I pray for the eyes of your people to be enlightened.

That we would all together come into the greatness of the understanding of what you have planned and purpose through your Son Jesus Christ.

That Father, the church can together rise up as one with one mind and one mouth, that you would be glorified and recognized all over the face of the earth because of the manifested glory through the church out to the world.

Father, I pray for each one of us, your people, as we come into this, that we would be left on our knees in complete humility and meekness, Father, before you.

That you are recognized as God Almighty, the planner and purpose of all of eternity.

And Father, that we would understand that apart from the Christ and all that he accomplished, this whole thing would be left empty.

This plan and purpose would not and could not be fulfilled, and we could not be the blessed recipients that we are.

Completely complete in Christ, being filled with all of your fullness, Father, all of your goodness, not only now, but throughout eternity.

And I pray this over these teachings and over your people.

Thank you, Father.

Through that powerful, authoritative, and delivering name of the Lord Jesus Christ, may his name be heard all over the face of the earth.

Amen.
