  1. We live in the age of outrage, and we so

  2. hide behind virtual walls and digital personas and screens that

  3. sometimes we have forgotten how to talk. And many young

  4. men will never know what it was like to do

  5. this and to have to still and steady your heart

  6. to talk to a girl on the other end of

  7. the line. People don't talk. People don't talk no more.

  8. All they do is this. Have you noticed? And yet

  9. we find that God is a conversationalist. Prove it to you.

  10. The very cadence of creation is call and response. God

  11. spoke and it was. Everything we see is a result

  12. of something that God spoke. And so to walk with

  13. God is to involve yourself in a conversation. Because I

  14. really want to model my ministry and my life after

  15. the ministry of Jesus. And as obvious as that should sound,

  16. I've missed it in so many ways. I missed it

  17. because sometimes I was so focused on what Jesus said

  18. and his words that I missed some of the context

  19. that he said those words in. And a lot of

  20. it was ignorance and I slowed down recently and I

  21. noticed a pattern in Jesus' ministry. Something that he did

  22. is so simple on the surface, you will miss it

  23. if you are not looking for it. I'll show it

  24. to you and by the time I show it to

  25. you a few different ways, You'll pick right up on

  26. it and you'll wonder, how did I never see that before?

  27. But the first one I thought I would mention, there

  28. are a lot of these I could have pulled from.

  29. But since I tried to memorize the Sermon on the

  30. Mount one time from Matthew 5 through 7, you know,

  31. he really starts preaching around about verse 3. But verse

  32. 1 says something. I never thought much about it before.

  33. It just says, now when Jesus saw the crowds, he

  34. went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples

  35. came to him, and he began to teach them. He

  36. sat down to teach, and the Bible says at the

  37. end of that whole discourse that the people were amazed

  38. at his teaching because he taught as one who had authority,

  39. not as one of their teachers of the law. He

  40. broke their expectations by virtue of the power of his wisdom.

  41. That was the first one I wanted to read you.

  42. The second one is in Luke chapter 4. It's kind

    Luke 4 chapter mention

  43. of cool because Jesus is preaching in his hometown of Nazareth.

  44. And he was Nazarus. I was thinking Lazarus and Nazareth together.

  45. It just kind of came out. A bit of a mashup.

  46. But he stood up and took the scroll and he

  47. read his scripture. And he was quoting from Isaiah 61.

  48. He read it. But he stopped. Because he was talking

  49. about the spirit of the Lord is on me for

  50. he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor.

  51. Open the eyes of the blind. recovery of sight, and

  52. he said that it is the year of the Lord's favor.

  53. And after he had said that, look at Luke 4,

    Luke 4:20

  54. verse 20, then he rolled up the scroll, gave it

  55. back to the attendant, and what did he do next?

  56. Talk to me. This is a conversation. All of y'all

  57. who look at me like some kind of clown to

  58. entertain you, I am not used to that. I am

  59. a conversational preacher. I need you to talk back. My

  60. questions are not rhetorical. I really expect an answer. What

  61. did he do after he rolled up the scroll, Jesus?

  62. He sat down. And the funny thing was he sat

  63. down before he got to their favorite part of the scripture.

  64. Because after he said it's the year of the Lord's favor,

  65. it said the day of vengeance of our God. And

  66. they really wanted him to be the kind of Messiah

  67. that would repay all of their enemies. But before he

  68. got to that point, because he is full of grace

  69. and truth, He rolled up the scroll, said it's the

  70. year of the Lord's favor, and he sat down. And

  71. when he sat down, the eyes of everyone in the

  72. synagogue were fastened on him, hanging on his every word

  73. because he was the word and the word became flesh

  74. and dwelt among us. Jesus is God's conversation with humanity

  75. so that if we see him, we see the father.

  76. You got time for one more? The Bible says in

  77. Hebrews that every priest that came before Jesus, the great

  78. high priest, would stand. This is around about verse 11

  79. of Hebrews chapter 10. And day after day, these human

    Hebrews 10 chapter mention

  80. priests in the religious system would stand. Offer sacrifices and

  81. and they would stand day after day and perform religious

  82. duties and day after day They would make atonement for

  83. the people since day after day Performing these religious duties

  84. again and again day after day They would stand and

  85. offer the same sacrifices the bulls and the goats and

  86. the and the pigeons and and everything else They could

  87. find to kill to try to shed blood to cover

  88. their iniquities They would do it day after day again

  89. and again, which can never take away sense. I But,

  90. verse 12 says, when this priest, speaking of Jesus, had

  91. offered for all time one sacrifice for sins, what did

  92. he do? So I got good news for you. He

  93. didn't sit down because he was tired. He sat down

  94. because he was finished. He sat down because everything that

  95. needed to be done for you to be right with

  96. God was accomplished on that cross. And when he did it,

  97. when he stretched his arms and shed his blood and

  98. breathed his last, got up from the grave with all

  99. power in his hand, trampling over death, hell, and the grave,

  100. he sat down at the right hand of God to

  101. make his enemies his footstool. Pretty cool that he's still

  102. seated today. No matter how anxious the world is, Jesus

  103. is not pacing the halls of heaven, wondering what I'm

  104. going to do about this. Do me a favor, touch

  105. somebody and say, he's still seated. It's interesting to me

  106. that he sat down. But my favorite time that Jesus

  107. sat down is recorded in John chapter 4. This one's

    John 4 chapter mention

  108. a little different because he sat down in a strange place.

  109. He sat down in a town called Samaria. The Bible

  110. says he had to go through Samaria. Technically, he didn't

  111. have to do anything. He is God. But there was

  112. an appointment he wanted to keep in Samaria that he

  113. did not give to the disciples to put on the itinerary.

  114. He knew about it. He had a reason, a conversation

  115. that was waiting in Samaria. When he came to a

  116. town in Samaria called Sychar near the plot of ground

  117. Jacob had given to his son Joseph. Jacob's well was

  118. there and Jesus, tired as he was from the journey,

  119. because he's fully God and he's fully man, so he

  120. got tired. Jesus had to blow his nose. Jesus had

  121. to sleep. Jesus cried as a baby. You know the

  122. Christmas carol, little Lord Jesus, no crying he makes. It's wrong.

  123. It's pretty, but it's not true. He cried. Screamed his

  124. head off. And Jesus, tired as he was from the journey,

  125. sat down by the well. It was about noon, and

  126. when a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said

  127. to her, Will you give me a drink? A quick question.

  128. How many of you believe that Jesus is the answer?

  129. Just raise your hand if you believe that. So if

  130. Jesus is the answer, what is he doing asking a question?

  131. to a woman as a rabbi who's not supposed to

  132. speak to a woman, to a woman who we will

  133. find out in the course of the conversation, we're not

  134. gonna read it today, but if we did, we'd find

  135. out she had questionable conduct. A woman who had not

  136. only questionable behavioral conduct, but a completely different belief system

  137. than Jesus. A different belief system, a different moral code,

  138. and a different ethnicity. So why would Jesus sit down

  139. and start a conversation? Something that the church isn't very

  140. good at is something that the Savior came to do.

  141. To start conversations with people who were different. And we've

  142. lost the art of conversation in our culture today. I

  143. can't speak to the whole world, but at least in America,

  144. we don't do conversation anymore. We do comments. Y'all aren't

  145. going to help me. You're going to leave me right

  146. up here on this stool by myself. I don't even

  147. have a pulpit to hide behind. We do comments. We

  148. do comments. One of my friends told me he calls

  149. when people go on and leave nasty comments but won't

  150. say it to your face. He calls that internet courage.

  151. We live our lives sometimes in echo chambers where digital

  152. algorithms are force-feeding us our preconceived prejudice and reinforcing our biases.

  153. And then we will sit down and watch news programming

  154. that is owned by the same conglomerate that sells us

  155. our antidepressant and anti-anxiety medication where they will gather people

  156. on a panel to talk about a cultural or social

  157. issue and they'll call it a conversation but it's really

  158. a cage match because we don't know how to have

  159. a conversation. And the church is not much better sometimes

  160. because we're always wanting to know where do we stand

  161. on the issue? Well, we do need to take a

  162. stand standing for truth and standing for what's right and

  163. standing for justice and turning back the battle at the gate.

  164. And all of that is important. But Nelson Mandela once

  165. said that where you stand. depends on where you sit

  166. your beliefs are shaped by your background and sometimes we

  167. speak before we sit sometimes as a preacher I've been

  168. better at developing my one liners than listening to the

  169. worldview of somebody who was different than me. And I

  170. believe that Jesus gives us a model here of conversation.

  171. He asks this woman a question. And the woman, verse 9,

  172. was really shocked. She said, You're a Jew. I'm a Samaritan.

  173. I'm a woman. You're a man. How can you ask

  174. me for a drink? For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.

  175. Yet the Savior sat by the well. and spoke with

  176. this woman. And he said to her, if you knew

  177. the gift of God and who it is that asks

  178. you for a drink, you would have asked him and

  179. he would have given you living water. And they had

  180. a conversation. And because of that conversation, the gates to

  181. the entire region of Samaria were open for the year

  182. of the Lord's favor. And it didn't start with a

  183. statement that Jesus made. It started with, Conversation. He sat down.
