  1. Hey, it's good to see you guys again. I wasn't

  2. here last week, that's why I said that. Hey,

  3. I just want to say last week I got to be in Reno

  4. area, a place called Spanish Springs, if anybody

  5. knows that area. There's a number of churches

  6. we partner with there, and I got to preach at

  7. this church, and like us, they're a portable

  8. church, meets in a high school. But it was a

  9. really cool time. And I'll tell you more about

  10. that story as you go. But it's really great to

  11. know that the body of Christ is not just one

  12. little church. It's multiple. And we work together

  13. to see the good news of Jesus spread. So that's

  14. where I was at. But it's good to be back here

  15. with you guys. A couple of things before we jump

  16. in. First of all, if you don't have a Bible with

  17. you, on those back tables, you saw Izzy had the

  18. little blue Bible. That's the Gospel of John.

  19. That's what we're working through. Feel free

  20. to jump up. Go grab one of those. Mark it up.

  21. Take it home with you. They're yours. But we're

  22. working our way through John's, so go do that.

  23. I want to just highlight, before we do anything,

  24. opportunities for you to serve. We're growing.

  25. It's a little sparse right now because so many

  26. people are out hunting and doing some adventures,

  27. but when everybody shows back up, This is going

  28. to be a bit of a packed house. And so one of

  29. the things we've done is we have bought 80 more

  30. chairs. This is everything that's available.

  31. And we have these old nasty ones over here in

  32. the corner that we can fold out. But we bought

  33. more of these. But we also bought a second trailer

  34. because we've got so many kids and we're going

  35. to have one for the kids and one for here. But

  36. that means we need more help in our setup and

  37. we need somebody to say, hey, I'll start pulling

  38. a trailer. It's a really easy way to serve, but

  39. we need you to step up as we grow those, so does

  40. the needs. And I can't say enough, like, how

  41. important our children are and how blessed we

  42. are to have so many kids, but also with that

  43. comes opportunities for the kids to be served,

  44. for you to serve in the back with the kids. I

  45. was down at this church. The church in Reno is

  46. probably... 400 people. And guys, we have way

  47. more children than they do. So we are so blessed.

  48. that everyone will come with 4 .5 kids. So a

  49. result of that is we have a lot of children,

  50. and that's why we're praying and asking God to

  51. raise up a children's ministry director. We need

  52. it desperately, but if you want to serve, God

  53. has created you to serve. We're actually going

  54. to touch on some of that this morning, but it's

  55. time to get out of the bleachers and into the

  56. game, okay? So if you're still sitting in the

  57. bleachers, you're part of this church, It's time.

  58. Time to get in the game. Find some way for you

  59. to roll up your sleeves and reflect the way that

  60. Jesus lived and deserved. Now, some of you, it's

  61. okay. Just come sit in the bleachers for a little

  62. bit. We want you there. We want you here. And

  63. at some point, you'll get into the game too.

  64. So, hey, let's do this. We're going to pray.

  65. This is a really cool text. And I've had so much

  66. fun with it this week. And I think you're going

  67. to enjoy it. This is a really cool story. Let's

  68. pray and ask God to do the work in us. It could

  69. just be flat on the page unless the Spirit of

  70. God does work. So let's pray and ask the Spirit

  71. to do a work, and then we'll dive into this,

  72. okay? Lord, we come before you as just broken

  73. people. People who... struggle from day to day

  74. i i don't know any of us in this room that isn't

  75. in that place myself included and we just need

  76. you jesus and we need to humbly come before you

  77. because we know that you are the the one who

  78. gives real life that you are the light of the

  79. world that you are um and you call us to to come

  80. to you as your children and so we do that this

  81. morning we ask by the power of the spirit that

  82. you will do a work in each one of our hearts

  83. starting like even with myself lord thank you

  84. for the work that you've already done in reminding

  85. me and convicting me of some things even this

  86. week will you continue to shape me and will you

  87. continue to shape this group of people more and

  88. to being more and more like you and we pray these

  89. in your name amen all right so if you uh If you

  90. were to put a title on these 11 verses, which

  91. I don't normally do, we just kind of roll right

  92. through a book. But if you were to put a title

  93. on these verses, I would call this radical gratitude.

  94. Radical gratitude. No, I'm not very good at titles.

  95. That's why I don't normally do them. But I think

  96. this one really matches this text. And so we

  97. are reaching this point, as you've been going

  98. through John, and we've reached this point where

  99. we've spent, we're in chapter 12. We're a little

  100. more than halfway, but not much. We've been here

  101. a while, haven't we? And we've spent, everything

  102. we've done so far in John has covered three years

  103. of Jesus' life. And now, the last half of John,

  104. all the way to the end, covers one week, roughly,

  105. of his life. And it's a really important week.

  106. All of history is deeply impacted by this one

  107. week. It will change everything. And so Jesus

  108. has, where we find ourselves now in this story,

  109. is that Jesus has raised Lazarus from the dead.

  110. And as you can imagine, the religious leaders

  111. who have been opposing him are nervous. Why?

  112. The religious leaders are in full opposition

  113. of Jesus right now. It's game on. It's take Jesus

  114. down. In fact, they've gone so far. as to the

  115. point where they have called out a hit on his

  116. life. They want Jesus dead. Why? Because they're

  117. really afraid of losing control. Now, they're

  118. saying, well, he's blaspheming, so they have

  119. justification in their mind to take Jesus down.

  120. But the real issue behind it is they're losing

  121. control. Okay? So we're now in chapter 12. And

  122. everything, everyone that's in the story, everyone

  123. is preparing for Passover. Now, you know, if

  124. you've followed, if you've been in your Bible

  125. at all, if you've been tracking with John, Passover

  126. festival feast is the most important. Like it's

  127. the highlight every year when there's a bunch

  128. of different festivals. This is a big one. And

  129. it's the third Passover. that we see in the Gospel

  130. of John. So we've gone through one, two, now

  131. number three. And one of the reasons we know

  132. that Jesus' ministry lasted three years is because

  133. significant things happen at the Passover. It

  134. kind of marks the big chapters, right? And this

  135. is number three. So three years into Jesus' ministry,

  136. Passover's here, and they're celebrating. And

  137. I'm not going to go into a lot of detail of the

  138. Passover just because we've done it a lot, and

  139. we'll do it more. They're celebrating the rescue,

  140. God's rescue of them out of Egypt and bringing

  141. them to the promised land. And how he did it.

  142. And so the Passover is near and everyone is preparing

  143. because it was a major preparation. Thousands

  144. upon thousands of people would convert, come

  145. into Jerusalem, and their feasts would happen,

  146. and every single thing that they were preparing

  147. had a significant meaning to it. And so they're

  148. getting close to the Passover, and this is where

  149. we find Jesus. And here's the thing. It's really

  150. interesting. If you look at the end of 11, he

  151. says the people were, as they're preparing, they're

  152. all asking the same question. Where's Jesus?

  153. Where is he? Will he show up? We hear there's

  154. a hit out on his life. What's going to go down?

  155. Will they arrest him and kill him? This is what's

  156. buzzing, okay? So let's get into our story. Now,

  157. verse 1 and 2, first chunk here. We're just going

  158. to jump right into the story. It says this. Six

  159. days before Passover, Jesus came to Bethany where

  160. Lazarus was, the one Jesus had raised from the

  161. dead. So they gave a dinner for him there. Martha

  162. was serving, and Lazarus was one of those reclining

  163. at the table with him. So again, six days. They're

  164. getting ready for the Passover. John tells us

  165. this is six days before that big event. Jesus

  166. is approaching Jerusalem. In six days, Jesus

  167. would be stretched out on a cross and give his

  168. life for all. This is where we're going. And

  169. the only one that really knows this is Jesus.

  170. He knows his doing. He knows what his destiny

  171. is. But now we're in this moment where they come

  172. into a house and they're about ready to throw

  173. what we're going to call a gratitude dinner party.

  174. A gratitude dinner party for Jesus. Mark tells

  175. us in his gospel that it's at Simon the former

  176. leper's house. So here's Simon, former leper,

  177. and he's hosting at this house. And then Matthew

  178. tells us that all of the disciples are there.

  179. So we know that there's at least 17 people present

  180. at this party. It's a thank you Jesus party.

  181. Every time, church, every time we gather, every

  182. time we gather, As a church, it should be a gratitude

  183. party for Jesus, right? Like, think about it.

  184. We come together because if you have met Jesus,

  185. you're different. And if you're not different,

  186. my question is, have you met Jesus? Because when

  187. Jesus crashes in on your life, things change.

  188. It's worth celebrating, right? So it's a gratitude

  189. party. Because of who Jesus is and what he's

  190. done. So every time we gather, this is a good

  191. marker. Like, this is a gratitude party. Sometimes

  192. it feels more like a funeral. We need to fix

  193. that. But these guys are here for one reason.

  194. The disciples. And they're all gathered together

  195. because they're celebrating. They have a gratitude

  196. party. That they're celebrating Lazarus' resurrection

  197. from the dead. But this wasn't... This was a

  198. dangerous party because remember, there's a hit

  199. out on Jesus' life. They want him dead. So it's

  200. dangerous to gather. But it didn't matter. They're

  201. worth celebrating Jesus because it was that important.

  202. Now what we're going to see in these is four

  203. responses at this party. Four different responses

  204. to Jesus at this gratitude party. We see, so

  205. verse... First three responses we see are from

  206. the siblings, Martha, Mary, and Lazarus. And

  207. these are appropriate responses. In fact, I'm

  208. going to challenge you today to think about each

  209. one of these responses should be evident in every

  210. one of our lives if you are a follower of Jesus.

  211. Let's start off with the first one. First, there's

  212. Martha. She is doing what Martha does best. If

  213. you've followed any of this, you know the story

  214. of Martha. She loves to serve. That's who she's

  215. serving. John highlights the fact that Martha

  216. is there and she's got a spread going and she

  217. loves barbecue. That's what I think anyway. Guys,

  218. that was a joke. I'm bad. Rough this morning.

  219. Come on, wake up. Martha is just serving, man.

  220. She's at the spread out. Here's the thing. She's

  221. a guest in Simon's house and yet She has taken

  222. responsibility to serve everyone. This is why

  223. he's highlighting it, okay? She has probably

  224. worked for hours. Like, use your imagination.

  225. She's worked for hours. She's got this huge spread

  226. out, and they're all coming, and they're lounging

  227. there, and they're going to feast before the

  228. Passover feast. This is a party. Then there's

  229. Lazarus. We see that Lazarus is mentioned. And

  230. we see Lazarus, and he's a picture of abiding

  231. in Jesus. We're going to get more into this.

  232. But it says that Lazarus is there lounging next

  233. to Jesus. And I want you to use your imagination.

  234. So you have Martha running around serving. Let

  235. me help you. Can I get something for you? And

  236. you have Lazarus there just in the presence of

  237. Jesus, abiding. And then there's Mary. Mary is

  238. giving. So if you think about three responses

  239. here, you have... Serving, abiding, and giving.

  240. Now look at what Mary does because it really

  241. wraps up the heart of this. Look at verse 3.

  242. Then Mary took a pound of perfume, pure and expensive

  243. nard. Think oil. Nard's not a word we use a lot.

  244. It's like really good oil. Anointed Jesus' feet

  245. and wiped his feet with her hair. So the whole

  246. house was filled with the fragrance of perfume.

  247. This story kind of gets lost. Let's unpack it

  248. a little bit. Guys, this whole scene is a picture

  249. of worship. It's worship. The Gospel Way Catechism

  250. defines worship this way. It says this. What

  251. is worship? Worship is the devotion. I think

  252. it's up there on the screen. Yeah. Worship is

  253. the devotion we offer up to whatever we love

  254. most. Now, before we get to the Christian definition,

  255. just think about that, what I just said. Worship

  256. is the devotion we offer up to whatever we love

  257. most. Christian worship is a lifelong outpouring

  258. of love to God and humble adoration. You're entranced

  259. by his beauty. We exalt him through praise and

  260. obedience. This is worship. What we did up here,

  261. that's singing. It can be worship, but worship

  262. is all -encompassing. It's your life being offered

  263. up. I would add that worship, we worship him.

  264. By abiding in him, by serving him, and giving

  265. all of you to him. That's worship. Abiding in

  266. him, which means to hang with him. To be in his

  267. presence. To serve him. Sacrificing everything

  268. you have. Like, can I help? Rolling up your sleeves.

  269. Looking for opportunity to jump in like Martha

  270. does. And then giving of everything. Now, think.

  271. Think about these three siblings. Worship of

  272. Jesus should be present in every believer's life

  273. or something's wrong. There should be abiding

  274. in your life. There should be serving in your

  275. life. And there should be giving. Let me unpack

  276. some of this. Let's zero in for a minute on Mary

  277. and how she pours out gratitude to Jesus. Mary's

  278. actions here were very costly. We kind of think

  279. of perfume, throw a little bit on there. No,

  280. this is not what's going on here. Her actions

  281. were incredibly costly. A pint of nard, if they're

  282. talking about here, as pure perfume oil, is extremely

  283. expensive. It would be your life savings, in

  284. a sense. 300 denarii is worth a lot. One denarii...

  285. is a day's wages. So it's at least 300 days of

  286. work in a jar. $60 ,000 to $80 ,000 probably

  287. in our days of money is what they estimate. So

  288. just take $60 ,000. We'll be generous, okay?

  289. We'll tone it down a bit. $60 ,000 you're holding

  290. in a jar and you come up to Jesus, to his feet,

  291. his dirty old feet. Mary takes... what is likely

  292. to be her most treasured possession. Kneels down

  293. at the feet of Jesus. Dirty feet. As she lounges

  294. there, she takes this jar and she begins to anoint

  295. his feet. And we don't have, like you guys got

  296. pretty clean feet, so I'm sorry you stink, but

  297. you don't have feet like back then. Like you

  298. don't do this. Only the servants would wash the

  299. feet. The lowest of the low would be brought

  300. in to wash feet because it was that gross. So

  301. here she is dumping a $60 ,000 to $80 ,000 bottle

  302. of ointment upon Jesus' feet, and then she does

  303. something really bizarre. She doesn't pull out

  304. a rag to wipe him, to clean him as she's anointing

  305. his feet. What does she do? She takes her hair.

  306. And for a Jewish woman to take her hair down

  307. and just begin to wipe his feet with her hair

  308. is a sense of... humble. It's an act of great

  309. humility. She's just like, can you picture this

  310. scene? Like, we don't even like, that would be

  311. weird in our day, but it was weird then. Imagine

  312. everybody in the room watching this. She takes

  313. her hair. I don't know, maybe she's got tears

  314. in her eyes. I don't know what's going on. It's

  315. just kind of a weird scene, but she's doing it.

  316. She's rubbing his feet, cleaning his feet, and

  317. takes her hair, and she's One of the commentators

  318. says that her gift reminds us of the surpassing

  319. value of Jesus Christ. Mary realizes it's worth

  320. it to give all to Jesus. She doesn't pick up

  321. a cheap perfume. She doesn't dab a little bit

  322. on the inside of his wrist. She brings out her

  323. best, most extravagant, most expensive ointment

  324. of the day, and she pours it every ounce on him.

  325. Her gift is her yelling at the top of the mountain,

  326. Jesus is worth it. That's worship. What would

  327. cause Mary to do something so extravagant, so

  328. radical, so expensive? Could it be? That Mary

  329. could really see who Jesus was. The almighty

  330. God. The God of the universe. Who became a human.

  331. Who would die a brutal death in our place. Could

  332. she see that? I think so. That he was so wondrous.

  333. So satisfying. Joyful. Joyfully God who promises

  334. to give peace and satisfaction in himself to

  335. those who humbly come before him. Did she get

  336. that? I think so. Why else would you dump that

  337. kind of money? Why else would you take it that

  338. far? Because she got who he was. Do you get who

  339. he is? She poured out her love and her gratitude

  340. on Jesus. I think what you see is Lazarus abiding,

  341. hanging out with Jesus. You see Mary doing all

  342. this work for Jesus. I mean, Martha, and then

  343. you see Mary giving everything in worship to

  344. Jesus. Church, I want us to love Jesus this way.

  345. I want us to love Jesus this way. I want to love

  346. Jesus this way. To love him for who he is. The

  347. God of the universe. In the beginning was the

  348. what? The word, and the word was with God, and

  349. the word was God. What John starts off in, in

  350. John chapter one, he starts off by saying, Jesus

  351. is God. And everything in the universe rotates

  352. around him. He made it all, and now he's come

  353. to you because he loves you. Mary, I think, gets

  354. that. Church, I want us to love. who he is. I

  355. want us to love what he has done because out

  356. of that changes everything. I believe it. I know

  357. it's true in my life. Now, can you imagine what

  358. it must have been like in that home, in the presence

  359. of Jesus, sitting around this table. They had

  360. these tables. They're about, you know, lounge

  361. up. They'd all be lounging back and they're like

  362. 17 and around the table and they're all having

  363. conversation. The food's all spread out and now

  364. all of a sudden Mary does this. She's pouring

  365. out perfume on Jesus' feet. She wipes her hair

  366. in front of everyone. But don't miss the last

  367. part. Verse 3. So the house was filled with the

  368. fragrance of the perfume. John doesn't make just

  369. throw words out there. Each one of these has

  370. deep meaning. The whole house was filled with

  371. the fragrance of the perfume. You're like, duh.

  372. That's a whole lot of perfume. Well, why does

  373. he tell us? See, guys, I think this is a picture.

  374. As people pour out worship to Jesus, it changes

  375. the atmosphere. It changes the place. I saw this

  376. last week. It was really cool. So I'm at this

  377. church. I don't know this church. I get to preach

  378. at this church. and I mean I know a few of the

  379. people I've gotten to know over the last several

  380. days but I'm preaching over this big auditorium

  381. full of 400 people or so and at first everybody's

  382. kind of standing this doing the normal you know

  383. radiant shuffle of once the song you're singing

  384. for a bit like this somebody does this once in

  385. a while shut up quiet we're singing you know

  386. one of that kind of thing and I'm watching it

  387. from a distance and I can see it happen And after

  388. the sermon, we get up and they do kind of the

  389. same thing. They're saying, and they got to this

  390. song. And I can't remember the name of the song,

  391. but everything changed in the room. All of a

  392. sudden, 60, 70 % of the room had their hands

  393. up in the air and there was tears flowing down

  394. their face. I'm telling you, it changed everything.

  395. Like the fragrance. I was thinking because I

  396. already studied this out and I was like, oh my

  397. gosh. Now this is just an expression. of gratitude

  398. toward God in this moment. But in that moment,

  399. I saw just this movement of like, and I'm not

  400. talking about an experience. I'm talking about,

  401. there wasn't, we're trying to drum up some sort

  402. of drama or emotional feeling. There were people

  403. literally going, God, you're everything. Like

  404. Mary did. She poured it out and she said, you're

  405. everything. And as a result of that, it changed

  406. the whole room. I was like, whoa. Because I knew

  407. what I was preaching this week. And I saw that

  408. was like. That's what he's talking about. Now

  409. I said that there's, as we started into the stories,

  410. there's four responses. Starting in verse four,

  411. we see the opposite of real Christian worship.

  412. Look at verse four and five. Then one of his

  413. disciples. Judas Iscariot, and he helps us out

  414. along the way. He kind of tells us what's, he

  415. reads his own commentary into this. He says,

  416. who was about to betray him said, why doesn't

  417. this perfume, why wasn't this perfume sold for

  418. 300 denarii? That's what we know it's worth,

  419. right? And given to the poor. Everyone at the

  420. meal saw Mary's worship. They saw it as amazing

  421. except for one. Except for one. Judas, he saw

  422. it as an extravagant waste. You know, at first

  423. when you read that, if you just stop right there,

  424. it kind of sounds wise. Why wouldn't you, why

  425. would you dump $80 ,000 on his feet when you

  426. could take that same amount and help somebody?

  427. It sounds impressive. It sounds sensitive, doesn't

  428. it? But these are the words, but these words

  429. were used to disguise his greed. Behind it all,

  430. he was a thief. Behind it all, he was selfish.

  431. Behind it all, it was all about him. John tells

  432. us in verse 6 what's actually going on. Look

  433. what he says. He doesn't say these because he

  434. cared about the poor. but because he was a thief.

  435. In fact, and then he explains what he did. He

  436. says he was in charge of the money bag. So I

  437. think this is a pretty funny moment before you

  438. jump ahead. Jesus knows what's going on and he

  439. still says, you can be in charge of the money

  440. bag. Money is not an issue to God, Jesus, is

  441. it? Don't worry, we're not talking about money

  442. in our church today, just so you're wondering.

  443. But Jesus didn't really bother him because John

  444. even knows at this point, he says, this is actually

  445. going on. He's holding the money bag and he's

  446. dipping in and he's stealing part of it whenever

  447. he wants it. John intends for us to see the contrast

  448. between Mary and Martha and their worship in

  449. Judas. Mary and Martha were selfless, giving

  450. and serving. They were giving and serving followers

  451. of Jesus. And Judas was selfish, greedy, materialist.

  452. That's the contrast. Now, we're all sitting here

  453. going, yeah, I'm sure glad I'm not like Judas.

  454. I found myself like Judas this week. That's my

  455. heart. I'm really honest. I know I may not be

  456. dipping into the church budget, just so you know,

  457. I'm not doing that. But I'm taking. I'm selfish.

  458. Mary's heart was full of wonder and thankfulness,

  459. and it overflowed in this radical demonstration

  460. of affection. She loved and treasured Jesus for

  461. who he was and what he'd done. And at this point,

  462. Jesus hasn't even gone to the cross. Judas, his

  463. heart felt none of that. He valued money more

  464. than Jesus. Judas could only think of what his

  465. wants and desires were. Judas was not a worshiper

  466. of Jesus. He was a worshiper of self, himself.

  467. He was a consumer. If we're not careful, we'll

  468. become like Judas. It's that close. One step

  469. away in our actions to be like Judas. We can

  470. become consumers too. A consumer says, it's all

  471. about me. A worshiper, of Jesus says, it's all

  472. about Jesus. Not some of it, all of it. A consumer,

  473. I hope this church meets my needs. A worshiper

  474. of Jesus, please point me to Jesus. A consumer,

  475. I want to be served. A worshiper, I will serve.

  476. Where I'm needed. Consumer is. I'm at the center.

  477. My world. I choose my church. My community. My

  478. Jesus to meet my needs. That's consumer. A worshiper

  479. says. Jesus is at the center. And my life rotates

  480. around him. That's the difference. Jesus is not.

  481. impressed with Judas' selfishness, and he responds

  482. to Judas. And this is amazing, these verses.

  483. Look at this. Jesus' answer is, leave her alone.

  484. You can remember, sitting around the table, this

  485. happens. Judas makes this wise comment, and he

  486. looks at Judas and goes, leave her alone. She

  487. has kept it for the day of my burial. For you

  488. always have the poor with you, but you do not

  489. always have me. Oh, what's going on here? Again,

  490. put yourself in this story. Imagine what's going

  491. on around this table. Mary is at the feet of

  492. Jesus, just did this thing, hair dripping with

  493. oil, pure nard. She's worshiping. The room is

  494. filled with this fragrance, and selfish Judas

  495. speaks up, and he's critical of what just happened.

  496. And Jesus' response is strong. And he looks at

  497. Judas. I can kind of imagine. And him kind of

  498. pointing right at Judas. And he says, leave her

  499. alone. Judas, shut up. That's what it means.

  500. I said shut up one time in church and got in

  501. trouble for it. But not this church. But he looks

  502. at him and says, Judas, knock it off. Knock it

  503. off. Because you're affecting worship. You're

  504. changing the tone of this whole room. Don't think.

  505. Jesus is saying the poor don't matter. He is

  506. not saying that here. In fact, Jesus always cared

  507. for the poor. That's not a poor person issue.

  508. This is about the priority of worship in your

  509. life. And he's saying to you, don't you dare

  510. interfere with Mary's worship right now because

  511. that is the most important thing. Don't you dare

  512. stop that. The way that Lazarus responded, abiding

  513. with Jesus, Very important. Are you sitting at

  514. the feet of Jesus? Are you just there with Jesus?

  515. This is the last time you just hung out with

  516. your Savior. Martha's response in worship is

  517. by serving Jesus. That's very important. Are

  518. you serving church? It's not because Radiant

  519. Church needs you. You need to serve. You're created

  520. for that. That's part of the identity that Jesus

  521. has given you. And you're going to find great

  522. joy, like Martha did, in serving. But let it

  523. be your worship. Not for getting anything, but

  524. by saying, Jesus, it's all for you. Mary responds

  525. in worship by giving everything. Her most important

  526. prize. God, it's for you. Very important. Worship

  527. is about abiding with Jesus, selfless, serving

  528. Jesus, radical giving to Jesus. That's what worship

  529. is. And he's calling us as a church. He's calling

  530. me, Caleb, he's calling me to live this way.

  531. He's calling you individually to live this way.

  532. And he's calling us corporately to be this kind

  533. of people. I believe that's what's going on here.

  534. It's all about Jesus. And it's not about you.

  535. It's for you. It's not about you. So Judas shut

  536. up and leave her alone, he says. Judas, stop

  537. it. Now, there's one more part of this story

  538. that we need to look at before we close. Look

  539. at verse 9. Then a large group, a large crowd

  540. of Jews learned he was there. This was kind of

  541. a private meeting, but they knew he was hit out

  542. for his life. The large group, they learned that

  543. he is there. They came not because of... they

  544. came not only because of jesus but also to see

  545. lazarus the one who's raised from the dead but

  546. the chief priests had decided to kill lazarus

  547. also because he was the reason so many jews were

  548. deserting them and believing in jesus okay what's

  549. going on here lazarus has become jesus star witness

  550. and the funny thing about lazarus there's nothing

  551. special about lazarus We don't see any words,

  552. teachings. He just exists. And I think that's

  553. the point. There's nothing that Lazarus did to

  554. earn Jesus, did he? But Jesus, you know, but

  555. he's become his star witness all because of what

  556. Jesus has done for him. Jesus has taken Lazarus

  557. from death to life. And for this reason, many

  558. of the Jews are now believing in Jesus. They're

  559. turning, they're going, that's what we want.

  560. You may not have been physically raised from

  561. the dead, church. But if you are in Christ, you

  562. were once dead in your sins. The Bible talks

  563. to this. Jesus has called you to himself. Right?

  564. He's called you out. And he's raised you to newness

  565. of life. That's what it means to be a follower

  566. of Jesus. He's changed you. I was... Craig, you're

  567. so bad because you sit right in the front row.

  568. I always pick on you. But there are a number

  569. of you in here that I've seen God change your

  570. life in the last year or so. You're one of them,

  571. Craig. It's happening, isn't it? The newness

  572. of life. It's happening. That's a miracle. And

  573. every believer has been changed by the power

  574. of Christ. And if you have a new life, if you

  575. have a new life, you are... with Christ, you

  576. are like Lazarus because you become the star

  577. witness to the reality of Jesus Christ. This

  578. is how the church grows. When your life is changed,

  579. it ripples out from you. If it's not, they'll

  580. call you a hypocrite. But if it's real, something

  581. changes. Craig was telling me today, and he didn't

  582. know I was going to say this. But a few weeks

  583. back, he got, after helping set up, he was out

  584. walking around the grounds, and he got bit by

  585. a dog. Really bad. And he left in the ER, and

  586. it cost a lot of money. And he didn't get ornery

  587. with the guy, the owner. He pressed in, showed

  588. the love of Jesus with this guy. And I'm not

  589. bragging about you, Craig. I just think this

  590. is a beautiful picture. The guy came by a couple

  591. Sundays ago to kind of give him some money to

  592. help with the ER visit. And Craig invited him

  593. in and says, why don't you come in? He didn't

  594. come. He said, but I think the words you said,

  595. Craig, was that you can change. You changed my

  596. life. It's crazy how you could change everybody

  597. else just by this circumstance. Come on in. That's

  598. a ripple effect. Of the change of somebody's

  599. life rippling into community outside of that

  600. saying, and this is what's happened with Lazarus.

  601. He becomes the star witness of Jesus. And it's

  602. not about Lazarus. It's about Jesus. As you go

  603. through the Gospel of John, we've talked over

  604. and over about this statement that your vertical

  605. relationship with God must affect your horizontal

  606. or something's wrong. Your vertical relationship.

  607. This is where it starts. You and Jesus. Where

  608. are you at? And this is what's happened here.

  609. Now as we close, I want you to think about your

  610. vertical, just you. You and you alone sitting

  611. in this chair. Think about your vertical relationship

  612. with Jesus. You could be... Or you could be all

  613. been doing this walk. Think you've been walking

  614. with Jesus. Maybe you're going to church your

  615. whole life. Stop for a second and just think

  616. about what this vertical relationship with Jesus

  617. is like. Is there abiding in him? Are you serving

  618. him? Are you giving to him all of you? Are you

  619. worshiping him? The vertical starts with this

  620. way. If Jesus is up here and you are down here,

  621. there's an arrow that points straight down. And

  622. everything starts and comes from Jesus to you.

  623. He has poured out his life for you. He's come

  624. to you. That's what we get in John, right? It's

  625. like, you could do nothing to get me. Grace upon

  626. grace upon grace, I give it to you. And you are

  627. like this. And you're soaking it up because you've

  628. done nothing to earn it. He's poured it out on

  629. you. That's the picture of the gospel. That's

  630. what's come to you. God to us. Here's my question,

  631. and I want to end with three questions to us,

  632. and I want you to respond, okay? I want you to

  633. talk about this with me. How has Jesus come to

  634. you? How did Jesus come to you? That vertical

  635. from here to here, how did Jesus come to you?

  636. How did he come? What was his posture? Think

  637. about it. Tell me. What was his way of coming

  638. to you? How did he approach you? Heavy -handed?

  639. Boom! Did he come after you that way? No. How

  640. did he come, church? Hmm? Like a baby? Who else?

  641. I heard one more. What's that? With mercy. He

  642. came to you. How else? How did he come to you?

  643. Came with you with love? Did you do anything

  644. to earn Jesus? How did Jesus come to Caleb? I

  645. didn't deserve what I got. And I got it anyway.

  646. It's called the incarnation. Jesus came to us.

  647. John 1 verse 14. Becoming flesh and dwelt among

    John 1:14

  648. us. He came to us in a way that we could. we

  649. could grab onto. And then the second question

  650. is, how has Jesus saved you? How did he save

  651. you? And third question is, what has Jesus given

  652. up for you? Let's just camp on that one for a

  653. minute. What did Jesus give up to come to you

  654. and to suffer and to die for you? What did he

  655. give up? Isn't that crazy? Position came to the

  656. lowest of the low. That's what Jesus did for

  657. you. So that's the vertical this way. Okay? Worship

  658. is our response to what God has done. Okay, God,

  659. look at all the things you did. Look who you

  660. are. Look what you have done. Worship is my acknowledgement

  661. that God, you did this. It's you. I'm nothing

  662. without you. That's what worship is. You guys

  663. ready to worship? Here's the definition of worship

  664. one more time. What is worship? Worship is a

  665. devotion we offer up to whatever we love most.

  666. So my question this morning starts with, what

  667. are you worshiping other than God? What are you

  668. putting in front of God that's become more important

  669. to God? And Bible says that we are to take that

  670. and lay it down. If you see something you know

  671. in your life, lay it down. Christian worship

  672. is a lifelong outpouring of the love of God.

  673. In humble adoration, entrenched by his beauty,

  674. we exalt him through praise and obedience. As

  675. we close this morning, as we sing, band, I want

  676. you to come up now. As we sing and celebrate,

  677. we're going to celebrate communion. Now, of course,

  678. communion is something we do every week. But

  679. it's there for a reason. You look at what Jesus

  680. did. This is the vertical. We're looking up.

  681. and saying, look what Jesus has done. His body

  682. was broken. His blood was shed. And I don't just

  683. do this as some little thing. I say, this bread

  684. represents his body that was broken for me. I

  685. did nothing to earn it. And this juice or this

  686. wine that I drink is a picture of his blood shed

  687. for me, a new covenant relationship established

  688. with me. Nothing you did. Grace upon grace being

  689. poured out on you. And we take it and we say,

  690. Thank you. Let's worship. We sing today with

  691. the kind of gratitude. Let's have a gratitude

  692. party. You guys have been very quiet today. I

  693. didn't mean it to be this way. But here's the

  694. thing. If Jesus is changing you, can you let

  695. him know? Sing. Like you, like, like. You're

  696. excited about Jesus. Sing in response to what

  697. God has done to this upward relationship. I personally

  698. think, like, we're intellectual people. We are

  699. lots of introverts in the house. Maybe it's time

  700. for some of you to actually go like this. Maybe

  701. some time to open your hands and don't worry

  702. about anybody else around you and use this as

  703. a physical thing. Put your life in the open of

  704. your hands and pretend for a second that, God,

  705. I give my family, I give my finances, I give

  706. everything, I give my children. Here, God, I

  707. give it back to you. God, here it is. And just

  708. sing. Sing and pray and give God back everything

  709. with this posture. See what he does. Don't be

  710. afraid. It'll change the room. Pour out your

  711. heart to Jesus. Maybe you need to worship for

  712. a second and abide in Jesus, just sit in your

  713. chair, and maybe there's some tears that need

  714. to flow, where you need to go, God, I come before

  715. you, and I see who you are, and I see the wretched

  716. sinner that I am, and I give it to you. I confess

  717. my sins before you. I am a broken dude. I'm a

  718. broken woman. Whatever it is. Cry out to God.

  719. Don't be ashamed. Don't worry about anybody else

  720. but him. Cry out to him today. Ask God this morning

  721. where you need to serve. If you're not serving,

  722. you're missing out. He's calling you to that.

  723. And so in the moment here, if you're going, I

  724. don't know what, I'm just kind of sliding in,

  725. sliding out, ask God to say, where do you want

  726. me? Where do you want me? Let me pray. Only you,

  727. Spirit, can change our hearts. Only you can draw

  728. us to your feet. So I pray today for the work

  729. and the power of the Holy Spirit to be upon all

  730. of us. That you might change us. You might transform

  731. us. You might make us more like you. That we

  732. will have a gratitude party starting right within

  733. our own hearts. We will be like Lazarus and Martha

  734. and Mary. And we'll come before you with great

  735. gratitude for who you are and what you've done.
