  23. Good morning, Calvary. Would you stand

  24. with us as we sing praise this morning?

  25. and sing. Your word is a lamp unto my

  26. feet.

  27. Your word

  28. is a lamp [music and singing] unto my

  29. feet.

  30. Your way

  31. is the only [music] way for me.

  32. It's a narrow road that leads to life,

  33. but I want to be on it.

  34. It's a narrow road with the mercies

  35. wide. Cuz you're good on your promise.

  40. works.

  41. You started to complete it. I'll take

  42. you [music and singing] at your

  43. spoke.

  44. You spoke [music]

  45. in a chaos fell in line. [music]

  46. And I know

  47. cuz I've seen it in my life.

  48. It's a narrow road that leads to life.

  49. [music] And I want to be on [singing]

  50. it.

  51. It's [music] a narrow road. The tide is

  52. high. Put your part [music] in the

  53. waters.

  54. I take you at your end.

  55. You said it. I'll [music and singing] be

  63. Start [singing] it. You're complete.

  64. [music]

  65. I'll take you extra.

  66. You promise.

  67. You said your love would never [music]

  68. give up. You said your grace is always

  69. enough. [singing and music]

  70. You said your heart would never forget

  71. [music] or forsake me.

  72. >> You said I'm [music and singing] saved.

  73. You called me yours. You said my

  74. future's [singing]

  75. full of your hope. You've never failed.

  76. So I know that you'll never fail me.

  77. [music]

  78. >> You said your love will never give up.

  79. You said your grace is

  80. [singing and music] always enough. You

  81. said your heart would never forget

  82. [music] or forsake me.

  83. >> You said I'm [music and singing] saved.

  84. You call me yours. You said my future's

  85. full of your hope. You've never failed.

  86. So I [singing] know that you'll never

  87. fail me. I take you [singing] at your

  88. word.

  89. [music] You said it. I'll be [singing]

  90. leaving.

  91. I see how good he was. [music]

  92. You started [singing]

  93. your competing.

  94. take you at your word.

  95. You said it, [singing and music] I'll

  100. [music]

  101. Heat. Heat.

  102. >> [music]

  103. >> What an awesome opportunity is this

  104. morning to praise his [music] name.

  105. We're going to spend time opening his

  106. word, letting him impact our hearts,

  107. singing to him, interacting with each

  108. other, and being the church together. If

  109. you're new with us this morning, we just

  110. want to say welcome. welcome. We hope

  111. you feel uh welcome, a warmth from us

  112. and [music] a friendliness because

  113. we're blessed. We are truly blessed.

  114. [music] So, if you are new with us this

  115. morning, we'd love to encourage you to

  116. head to the hub in the back of the

  117. atrium at the end of the service. Our

  118. welcome [music] team is there and they

  119. would love to meet you, give you more

  120. information about who we are at Calvary.

  121. We take a second this morning to greet

  122. each other. I want you to talk about

  123. [music] your favorite fall beverage.

  124. Favorite fall beverage.

  125. Hallelujah.

  126. Heat. Heat.

  127. Let's

  128. [music]

  129. sing. I want to [music] dance like

  130. David.

  131. I want to dance like [music] David. I

  132. want to feel like Paul. I want to sing

  133. like Silas tearing [music] down the

  134. prison walls. I want to face that fire.

  135. Won't burn [music] me.

  136. God's got my back. Shadrach, Meshack, a

  137. ped.

  138. I want to walk like Moses run through

  139. [music] the waves. One day I'll see that

  140. promised land no longer slaves. [music]

  141. The fear [singing] is talking. No, it

  142. can't take out my faith.

  143. I'm going to praise. [music and singing]

  144. I'm going to praise. I praise the

  145. mountain moving body raising breaker and

  146. chain. Going to praise. [music]

  147. I'm going to praise. I praise the heaven

  148. seated and defeated highest in me.

  149. [music] That's who I praise. Yeah,

  150. that's who [music] I praise. That's who

  151. I praise.

  152. I want a gift like [music] Mary. I want

  153. to raise my face. I want to see like

  154. Daniel, even [singing and music] in a

  155. lion's cave. Going to get that promise

  156. just like Jericho.

  157. Yeah. I [singing and music] don't want

  158. to make it full. I'm going to praise.

  159. I'm going to praise. I praise the

  160. mountain moving body [singing and music]

  161. raing breaker chains. Going to praise.

  162. I'm going to praise. I praise the heaven

  163. seated undefeated highest in me. That's

  164. who I praise.

  166. he can do impossible [music] things.

  167. That's who I praise.

  168. Hey. Oh, that's [music] who I praise.

  169. That's who I praise.

  171. Judah.

  172. is he is [music] the lamb that was

  173. slain.

  174. The only one who's [music] worthy worthy

  175. worthy of all of [singing] his names.

  176. That's who I praise. He is the risen

  177. [music] Messiah.

  178. He is the ancient [singing]

  179. of days.

  180. [music] The only one who's worthy,

  181. [singing]

  182. worthy, worthy of all of his names.

  183. That's who I praise. I'm going to

  184. praise.

  185. I praise the God. [music]

  186. He can do it, break or change. Going to

  187. praise. I'm going to praise. I praise

  188. [music] the heaven seated, undefeated,

  189. [singing]

  190. highest. That's who I praise.

  191. I praise [music] the God who's proven he

  192. can do impossible thing. That's who I

  193. praise.

  194. Oh, that's who I praise. That's [music]

  195. who I praise.

  196. Praise [music] you, Jesus.

  197. I want to love.

  198. I want to love like Jesus. That kind of

  199. grace. I want to live like I've got no

  200. more precious time to waste. Going to

  201. give him [singing] glory with all

  202. [music] my thanks cuz there's no

  203. greater, stronger, higher name. That's

  204. who I praise.

  205. Amen.

  213. compassions [singing] they fail not.

  214. As thou hast been, that forever

  215. [singing]

  292. [music]

  293. Let's pray [music] together.

  294. Father, we just thank you for your

  295. mercies that are new every morning.

  296. Thank you for your your faithful love.

  297. Your mercies never end. They're new

  298. every day. You forgive us, Lord. And we

  299. just thank you for these great gifts you

  300. give us. That you [music] want a

  301. personal relationship with us, Lord.

  302. that you give us prayer and your word

  303. and that you love us more than we could

  304. ever imagine. You give us our [music]

  305. identity and we just thank you Jesus for

  306. who you are. We thank you [music] God,

  307. Holy Spirit, our father three in one. I

  308. pray that our

  309. the words of our mouth, the meditations

  310. of our heart would be pleasing to you.

  311. Help us to turn from anything that is

  312. not of you and turn towards you and just

  313. be filled aresh this morning. We thank

  314. you for that in Jesus name. Amen. Thank

  315. you for singing with us. [music] Please

  316. have a seat.

  317. Heat. Heat.

  318. I would love to invite the ushers to

  319. come forward this morning as we take

  320. this morning's offering. As you saw, we

  321. had a jam-packed summer of God moving in

  322. awesome and amazing ways. From our kids

  323. camps to summer camp to missions trips,

  324. kidfest, and so much more, God has moved

  325. in incredible ways this past summer. and

  326. we just thank you so much for your

  327. generosity because that's what helps

  328. fuel us being able to do these types of

  329. experiences for students and kids uh

  330. that really encountered amazing things.

  331. There was thousands of kids or over a

  332. thousand kids that encountered Jesus uh

  333. in amazing ways this summer through

  334. KidFest and summer camp and so much

  335. more. So, thank you for your generosity.

  336. If you're new this morning, we want you

  337. to know there is no pressure to give.

  338. We're so grateful that you're here

  339. worshiping with us today. Uh and

  340. hopefully you have an awesome morning uh

  341. connecting with the Lord here. Alongside

  342. that generosity though were hundreds of

  343. adult volunteers who stepped up to serve

  344. this summer uh in our kids and students

  345. areas and God used those volunteers to

  346. make a ginormous difference in the lives

  347. of students and I know I can I've

  348. witnessed that firsthand. See one of the

  349. most important volunteers in my life

  350. growing up was a guy named Tony. Uh see

  351. when I didn't grow up in the church I I

  352. kind of came to know Jesus in 10th grade

  353. and I came to church and I felt like you

  354. know a frog out of water. I just didn't

  355. know where I was or what I could do uh

  356. and who I should talk to. But I met this

  357. guy named Tony and he was a volunteer

  358. and he wasn't super young. He was in

  359. college and had a bunch of time. He was

  360. older. He had a family. He was a coach.

  361. Uh he had every reason to have a million

  362. other things to do other than to spend

  363. time with me. But about once a month

  364. before work and school, he would come

  365. pick me up and we would go to John Plain

  366. and Fancy for breakfast together. Uh and

  367. spend time together talking. He would

  368. ask about school, my family, and my

  369. faith. And somewhere along the way, he

  370. would always bring it back to Jesus and

  371. how God was working in my life. And some

  372. of the most hardest moments of my high

  373. school time, he walked me through and

  374. let me see how God was working in my

  375. life. Back then, I just thought, man,

  376. Tony is such an awesome guy. Takes me

  377. out for breakfast. Uh he's just so

  378. great. But today, I realize the

  379. sacrifice he was making and the

  380. investment he was making in my life when

  381. he he would do that. And I'm standing up

  382. here today because of volunteers like

  383. Tony who kept showing up and kept

  384. investing in my life. And every week I

  385. see volunteers all around our building

  386. who are like Tony serving in various

  387. ways who are, you know, working after a

  388. long day of hard work and being at work.

  389. They come and they serve uh they sit on

  390. the floor with kids in our kids

  391. environment and talk about who Jesus is.

  392. Small group leaders leading a bunch of

  393. middle school students on a Tuesday

  394. night. our bridge volunteers being

  395. buddies on a Sunday morning and serving

  396. in tech all throughout our building. Uh

  397. there's so many opportunities, right, of

  398. people stepping up to serve others. And

  399. what's so cool is that sometimes when

  400. you think about serving, you know, you

  401. think about what you're giving and

  402. that's a big part of it, but it's also

  403. about what you receive, right? Because

  404. the people you serve with, they become

  405. like they become your friends and they

  406. in a lot of ways become like family.

  407. Serving is a great opportunity to get

  408. connected and to serve with a bunch of

  409. people and make a difference in the

  410. lives of others. And along the way, you

  411. realize even though you were looking to

  412. give, you also receive in that process

  413. when you serve others. So maybe some of

  414. you thought about serving, but you

  415. haven't taken that next step yet. Or

  416. maybe you were serving prior to co and

  417. you haven't gotten back in the rhythm of

  418. serving. Or maybe you feel like you're

  419. not equipped or maybe you're too old or

  420. too young to serve. I want to encourage

  421. you, whatever your reason is, I would

  422. encourage you to take that step this

  423. fall as we look as a church to to

  424. continue to make an impact. Take that

  425. next step of serving because maybe

  426. someone's Tony is sitting right here in

  427. this room today and you just don't know

  428. it yet. The reality is this is that you

  429. don't have to be an expert to be a

  430. volunteer. You don't need to know all

  431. the answers or be a perfect person. You

  432. just have to be willing to show up to

  433. care about someone else and let God use

  434. you. and you'll be amazed at how God

  435. will use you to make such an impact in

  436. someone else's life. Our kids, students,

  437. and bridge uh disability ministry are

  438. looking for volunteers. Whether it's

  439. adult small group leaders or working in

  440. our tech or even some behindthe-scenes

  441. roles, we have lots of areas that you

  442. can serve and make a difference. Also,

  443. throughout our whole church, we need

  444. more volunteers as well, right? There's

  445. a volunteer area out there, and I

  446. actually grabbed one of these cards

  447. here. This is for the grounds crew,

  448. right? You could do something simply as

  449. helping with the grounds and it could

  450. make a difference in someone's life. So,

  451. there's actually a QR code on the seat

  452. back in front of you. You can scan that

  453. right now and there's a short interest

  454. form if you want to just let us know

  455. you're interested. We'd love to follow

  456. up with you. Uh just put your phone

  457. number down and someone will call you or

  458. text you this week. But if you want to

  459. talk to someone, there's Jamie outside

  460. in our lobby area. There's a volunteer

  461. area with tons of these cards that you

  462. can see the various opportunities that

  463. you can serve in. And again, just just

  464. express interest. you're not committing

  465. to it, but at least you start that

  466. conversation

  467. because this is the reality is that

  468. years from now there might be someone

  469. who shares a story about how they were

  470. impacted because of the person that was

  471. showing up for them. And that person

  472. could be you if you let God use you. So

  473. that's my encouragement. Pray about it,

  474. think about it, and take that next step

  475. as we look as a church to continue to

  476. help people get connected and make an

  477. impact in the lives of others. This

  478. morning, we're excited to continue our

  479. series um on the main thing and we're

  480. going to be hearing from Pastor Charles

  481. this morning.

  482. Well, good morning everybody. Welcome to

  483. week two of the main thing living like

  484. Jesus. And what we're doing, we're

  485. looking at select passages from the

  486. Gospel of Luke, trying to understand

  487. what was Jesus main thing. And if we

  488. could figure that out, we would be doing

  489. well if we would adopt that same main

  490. thing in our lives. Now, um when I

  491. learned how to drive, and contrary to

  492. what my wife says, I do know how to

  493. drive. Um, one of the things we're

  494. always told, look back before you move

  495. ahead. Now, that meant for me looking,

  496. turn my arm on the back. You weren't

  497. allowed to take your hands off the

  498. steering wheel, but I would look back,

  499. squint, look out the rearview mirror,

  500. look out the rear window, then look up,

  501. look in the rearview mirror. You don't

  502. have to do any of that today. We got

  503. cameras everywhere, and so you can kind

  504. of look forward and see what's happening

  505. at the cameras, but the point is still

  506. the same. In order to safely move

  507. forward,

  508. you need to first look behind. You need

  509. to look behind. Well, that's what we're

  510. going to do today. And we're going to do

  511. it in two different ways. We're going to

  512. do it kind of a smaller picture and then

  513. the bigger picture. So, uh, let me give

  514. you the small picture looking back from

  515. the passage we're going to look at in

  516. Luke 4. Looking back in Luke to see how

  517. Luke sets up what's going to happen in

  518. Luke 4. So, let me remind you of a

  519. couple of things from last week because

  520. uh I'm not sure you would remember, but

  521. the second part of last week's message

  522. was all about Jesus sunship. And so, we

  523. said in the temple, Jesus reminds his

  524. parents as the father reminds him that

  525. he's the son. And Jesus says to Mary and

  526. Joseph, "Don't you know I have to be

  527. about my father's business?" So Jesus is

  528. understanding his father, his ultimate

  529. heavenly father needs to set the

  530. business plan that Jesus will then live

  531. out. That becomes crystal clear in the

  532. next chapter in Luke. Jesus understood

  533. his sunship in the river. Now here's

  534. what happened. John the Baptist baptizes

  535. Jesus. When he lifts Jesus from the

  536. water, the father booms from heaven and

  537. says, "This is my son whom I love. with

  538. him I am well pleased. Now um we said

  539. sunship has to preede ministry but also

  540. kind of testing precedes ministry too.

  541. So let's look back just a minute and

  542. I'll show you that how this is going to

  543. lead into what we're going to talk about

  544. today. After Jesus is baptized, he hears

  545. sunship ringing in his ears. He's been

  546. declared he's a he's believe I'm the

  547. son. He God then ushers him into the

  548. desert and he's tempted by the devil in

  549. the desert. Now the picture is just like

  550. Israel, right? Old Testament. Just as

  551. Israel was declared God's son, Moses

  552. then leads him out to the wilderness and

  553. they failed the test. Now God graciously

  554. still leads him to the promised land.

  555. They failed the test in the wilderness.

  556. So Jesus now the perfect Israel. Jesus

  557. now shows up declared to be the son led

  558. into the wilderness and he's going to be

  559. tempted there. Remember sunship declared

  560. in the river. What does the enemy say

  561. when he comes to tempt Jesus?

  562. If you are the son of God, he says it

  563. twice. What did the father say in the

  564. pre? You are my son with whom I'm well

  565. pleased. What's the temptation? If

  566. you're the son of God, turn these stones

  567. to bread. If you're the son of God, jump

  568. off the temple and the angels will catch

  569. you. Jesus is succeeding. He's passing

  570. the test. He's not failing the

  571. temptation the way Israel. He succeeds.

  572. Sunship testing. Well, that that raises

  573. the question then what did the son come

  574. to do? Like we looked at how Luke

  575. described this is what I'm writing here.

  576. who Jesus is the who, the sonsuffering

  577. servant and the reigning king Messiah.

  578. Well, what's the mission? What did he

  579. come to do? That's what Luke now gives

  580. us in the sermon in Nazareth. So, if you

  581. have your Bibles,

  582. turn to Luke chapter 4. You use your

    Luke 4 chapter mention

  583. phone, your iPad, or just listen. And um

  584. notice what Luke's doing. He's laying

  585. out an orderly account what Luke is

  586. going to do. Jesus has declared the son

  587. in the temple. Declared the son in the

  588. river. He passes the test of sunship in

  589. the wilderness. Then we're told at the

  590. sermon in Nazareth, Jesus now declares

  591. why he's here. So, beginning in uh Luke

    Luke 4:14

  592. 4:14,

  593. let's read about this first sermon.

  594. Jesus returned to Galilee in the power

  595. of the spirit, and news about him spread

  596. through the whole countryside. He was

  597. teaching in their synagogues, and

  598. everyone praised him. He went to

  599. Nazareth, where he had been brought up.

  600. And on the Sabbath day, he went into the

  601. synagogue, as was his custom, he stood

  602. up to read, and the scroll of the

  603. prophet Isaiah was handed to him.

  604. Unrolling it, he found the place where

  605. it is written, "The spirit of the Lord

  606. is on me because he has anointed me to

  607. proclaim good news to the poor. He has

  608. sent me to proclaim freedom for the

  609. prisoners and recovery of sight for the

  610. blind, to set the oppressed free, to

  611. proclaim the year of the Lord's favor.

  612. Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it

  613. back to the attendant and sat down. The

  614. eyes of everyone in the synagogue were

  615. fastened on him. He began by saying to

  616. them, "Today

  617. this scripture is fulfilled in your

  618. hearing." All spoke well of him and were

  619. amazed at the gracious words that came

  620. from his lips. Isn't this Joseph's son?

  621. They said. Jesus said to them, surely

  622. you will quote this proverb to me.

  623. Physician, heal yourself, and you will

  624. tell me, do here in your hometown what

  625. we've heard you did in Capernaum.

  626. Truly I tell you, he continued, no

  627. prophet is accepted in his hometown. I

  628. assure you that there were many widows

  629. in Israel in Elijah's time when the sky

  630. was shut up for three and a half years

  631. and there was a severe famine throughout

  632. the land. Yet Elijah was not sent to any

  633. of them but to a widow in Zerapath in

  634. the region of Siden. And there were many

  635. in Israel with leprosy in the time of

  636. Elisha the prophet. Yet not one of them

  637. was cleansed only non the Syrian. All

  638. the people in the synagogue were furious

  639. when they heard this. They got up, drove

  640. him out of the town, took him to the

  641. brow of a hill on which the town was

  642. built in order to throw him off the

  643. cliff, but he walked right through the

  644. crowd and went on his way. Boy, that

  645. sermon started good and went bad. Uh,

  646. what the heck happened? Well, um, first

  647. of all, we need to look at the promise

  648. given the text of the sermon. Now, let

  649. me kind of set the stage for you. This

  650. is a familiar passage. We've actually

  651. spoken about it before, but if we're

  652. going to look at Luke, we have to

  653. understand this is Jesus coming out

  654. event. This is Jesus calling card. This

  655. is why I'm here. We know who he is. He's

  656. the son. He's passed the test. What did

  657. he come to do? That's what he tells us

  658. in the first sermon. The promise is

  659. given. Here's the situation. Jesus is in

  660. his hometown. Now, here's what that

  661. means. Small hometown. Everybody in the

  662. synagogue knew Jesus. Everybody in the

  663. synagogue knew Joseph and Mary. He was

  664. their carpenter. They probably saw Jesus

  665. working there. They knew Joseph. They

  666. knew Mary. And so they knew each other.

  667. Jesus knew all of them and they knew

  668. him. And here this hometown kid, he's

  669. traveling around speaking different

  670. places. And he's making quite a name for

  671. himself. Now he hasn't preached at home

  672. yet, but he travels home and he goes

  673. into the synagogue. And my guess is the

  674. people said, "Well, Jesus is here. Let

  675. let him talk. We want to hear what the

  676. other people are hearing. How why are

  677. they so amazed at what he says? let him

  678. let let him give us one of those amazing

  679. sermons. And so the attendant walks over

  680. with the Isaiah scroll. You got to

  681. remember back then people didn't have

  682. their own copies of the Bible. Too

  683. expensive. You had to handw write the

  684. copies of the Bible. And so a synagogue

  685. may have a copy of the B. Maybe not even

  686. the whole Old Testament. But when you

  687. show up at the synagogue, they would

  688. hand someone the scroll the scroll to

  689. read. You unroll it and read. So they

  690. hand Jesus the Isaiah scroll. And Jesus

  691. takes Isaiah scroll, kind of unrolls,

  692. comes to Isaiah chapter 61, and here's

    Isaiah 61 chapter mention

  693. what he reads.

  694. The spirit of the Lord is on me because

  695. he has anointed me to proclaim good news

  696. to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim

  697. freedom for the prisoners, recovery of

  698. sight for the blind, to set the

  699. oppressed free, to proclaim the year of

  700. the Lord's favor. Now, if you remember

  701. the words that the father spoke over

  702. Jesus in the river, you are my son with

  703. you well pleased. The first part of that

  704. comes from Psalm two. The second part of

  705. that comes from Isaiah and it's a

  706. servant song. And what what the father's

  707. doing, he's giving us the two-pronged

  708. mission of Jesus. He is the victorious

  709. king, the Messiah. But he's also the

  710. suffering servant who comes to pay for

  711. the guilt of those that that have

  712. failed.

  713. This comes from a servant song. And so

  714. Jesus reads from Isaiah 61. And um he

  715. says, "I'm here. I've arrived. I'm

  716. here." Now, you have to understand a

  717. couple of things about this.

  718. Isaiah

  719. didn't invent everything in that quote.

  720. Isaiah was kind of well schooled in the

  721. Bible. He knew what the Old Testament

  722. taught. But the pattern that he

  723. describes in Isaiah 61 is actually the

  724. pattern that's first started all the way

  725. back in Leviticus 25. In Leviticus 25,

  726. that that p that chapter is all about

  727. the year of Jubilee. Isaiah does not

  728. quote anything from Leviticus 25, but he

  729. does mention the pattern. The pattern is

  730. all about freedom. The pattern is all

  731. about liberty. In fact, on the Liberty

  732. Bell in Philadelphia, the ver a verse

  733. from Leviticus 25 is engraved on the

  734. Liberty Bell. What does it say? Proclaim

  735. liberty throughout the land. That's what

  736. Leviticus 25 is about. That's what they

  737. were doing. ringing the liberty bell,

  738. freedom from England. Well, Leviticus

  739. 25, freedom from oppression, freedom

  740. from all these. Now, Jubilee had four

  741. prongs to the to the freedom. And let me

  742. mention them because this is in mind as

  743. Jesus is reading. The first theme of the

  744. pattern was freedom from debt. Freedom

  745. from debt. Now, look, we're among

  746. friends, so we can answer. Uh, how many

  747. of you have debt of any kind? Raise your

  748. hand. Yeah, if you don't have your hand

  749. up, you're a liar. Yeah, you have a

  750. mortgage, you have a car payment, you're

  751. paying off student loans, you have

  752. credit card. We have debt all over the

  753. place, right? Well, what was one of the

  754. first themes of Jubilee?

  755. God promises freedom from debt. We've

  756. incurred debt. Living in our world, you

  757. almost have to acquire debt. Hopefully,

  758. you pay it off quickly, but you can't

  759. live without some kind of debt. You

  760. realize you can't rent a car without a

  761. credit card. As soon as you put it on a

  762. credit card, you have debt until you pay

  763. it. Well, what what's the announcement?

  764. What's the first theme of Jubilee?

  765. Freedom from debt. Not just freedom from

  766. debt, though. Freedom from bondage.

  767. Freedom from oppression. You got to

  768. remember all the way back in Leviticus,

  769. that's Moses' time.

  770. Who was the oppressor of Israel in

  771. Moses' day?

  772. Egypt, right? Egypt. And so, the

  773. Israelites are slaves. They're in

  774. bondage. They're in captivity in Egypt.

  775. What does Jubilees say? You're going to

  776. be freed from bondage. In Isaiah's day,

  777. they're not free from bondage, though.

  778. But not out of Egypt. Now, it's Assyria.

  779. Assyria has them in bondage. They have

  780. to pay taxes. They're they're servants

  781. of Assyria. And Assyria is brutal. After

  782. Assyria, Babylon becomes the rulers. And

  783. now Babylon's kind of beating on them.

  784. Babylon is subjugating them. Babylon

  785. extracting taxes. Babylon's cruel. And

  786. in Jesus day, he shows up. It's not

  787. Egypt. It's not Assyria. It's not

  788. Babylon. When Jesus read from Luke 4,

  789. who was the oppressor?

  790. Now, it's Rome. Rome. But through

  791. history, the Israelites, God's people,

  792. have never known a time of long-term

  793. freedom. But Jubilee is God says through

  794. Moses, "One day, one day there going to

  795. be freedom from debt. All the debt

  796. you've incurred is going to be taken

  797. away. All the oppression, all of the

  798. subjugation, the servitude you're

  799. experiencing, being under people's

  800. thumb, it's going to be taken away. Not

  801. just that, freedom from loss. Freedom

  802. from loss. Now, remember back in the Old

  803. Testament times and even in Jesus day,

  804. your real worth was in your land. That's

  805. still true, right? People say, "I have

  806. real estate where your real worth was in

  807. your land." Well, it was easy to lose

  808. ownership of your land. Let me give you

  809. two big reasons. Sickness

  810. and stupidity.

  811. So, if you got sick, you would lose your

  812. land. Nobody take care of it. If your

  813. kids weren't old enough to take care of

  814. it, you'd lose your land. If you were

  815. stupid, you'd lose your land. What did

  816. Jubilees say? Every 50 years, ownership

  817. will always revert back to the owners

  818. that were originally given the promised

  819. land. Freedom from debt, freedom from

  820. oppression, freedom from loss. And one

  821. more thing, you read the beginning of

  822. Leviticus 25. All of the freedom

  823. mentioned in Leviticus 25 begins, the

  824. announcement begins on the day of

  825. atonement, freedom [snorts]

  826. from sin. So this big announcement of

  827. freedom, freedom, freedom of debt,

  828. freedom from debt, freedom from

  829. oppression, freedom from loss, freedom

  830. from sin.

  831. They waited and waited. The promise

  832. comes all the way back in Leviticus. One

  833. day, Jubilee's coming. Well, Isaiah is

  834. like in seven in the 8th century, 700,

  835. still hadn't come. Isaiah says, "Oh, but

  836. Jubilee's coming. Jubilee's coming."

  837. Jesus shows up in Luke chapter 4.

    Luke 4 chapter mention

  838. He carefully chooses the text that

  839. becomes his business card event. I am

  840. Jubilee. I have now arrived. I am

  841. bringing this freedom. [clears throat]

  842. The promise was given. Now Jesus says

  843. the promise is fulfilled.

  844. Look at how Jesus says it. He reads

  845. that. He sits back down. And uh I I

  846. always like that's kind of cool. you in

  847. most synagogues even today, but

  848. certainly in Jesus day, you would stand

  849. to read God's word. You sit down when

  850. the preacher's talking, that's you

  851. respect what God say. Semi-respect what

  852. the preachers same as today, right? You

  853. stand and sit. Here's what Jesus says.

  854. Short little sermon. Today,

  855. this scripture is fulfilled in your

  856. hearing today. Think about that. They

  857. waited and waited

  858. day after day, week after week.

  859. Eventually, I think, is this stuff true?

  860. Like God's promising all this freedom,

  861. all this liberty that they waited month

  862. after month,

  863. year after year,

  864. decade after decade,

  865. century after century,

  866. and Jesus shows up

  867. in a synagogue in his hometown, and he

  868. says, "Uh, Jubilee has now arrived."

  869. Now, I want to show you something that

  870. you may miss, but just to make sure you

  871. didn't miss it, I printed both sections

  872. on your outline. So, if you have your

  873. outline

  874. under the promises given, I actually

  875. quote there Isaiah 61. See it? Then at

  876. the bottom of the page, I list where

  877. Jesus quotes Isaiah 61, but it's a

  878. little different. Um, let me call your

  879. attention to the last three lines of

  880. Isaiah 61.

  881. Um, I don't think Jesus made a mistake.

  882. Here's how Isaiah originally wrote it as

  883. he lists the pattern of Jubilee from

  884. Leviticus 25. Last three lines. The

  885. servant will come to proclaim the year

  886. of the Lord's favor

  887. and the day of vengeance, our God, and

  888. to comfort all who mourn. Now look at

  889. the bottom of the page.

  890. To proclaim the year of the Lord's

  891. favor, period. Huh?

  892. Why' Jesus mess up?

  893. Why did he not

  894. read what was in the Isaiah text? Right?

  895. And so the scroll Jesus has in his hands

  896. as he's reading from Isaiah 61 has the

  897. day of God's vengeance. He stops

  898. reading, proclaim the year of God's

  899. favor, close the scroll, gives it back.

  900. Did he make a mistake? Did he Was that

  901. written on the next page and he kind of

  902. skipped and did? I don't think so. He's

  903. communicating an important principle.

  904. There will be a pause.

  905. Here's what Jesus There will be a pause

  906. between the proclamation

  907. of Jubilee

  908. and the enactment of justice and

  909. vengeance. Isaiah didn't know about that

  910. pause. Moses didn't know about that

  911. pause. Jesus shows up and by stopping

  912. where he stopped reading Isaiah 61, he

  913. says, "There will be a pause right now.

  914. I'm here to proclaim the year of the

  915. Lord's favor.

  916. Pause. Make no mistake. Justice and

  917. vengeance will come, but not today.

  918. Not this time.

  919. Notice what he's doing, right? Exactly

  920. according to plan. So, the promise was

  921. given, the problem promises fulfilled.

  922. And the people in the synagogue, they

  923. love it. They love it. And we would love

  924. it too, right? So think about what

  925. they're thinking.

  926. Freedom from debt.

  927. Freedom from oppression. Who's the

  928. oppressor? They're all thinking, who's

  929. the oppressor in in Luke 4? Rome.

  930. Freedom from loss. My guess is some

  931. people in the synagogue had lost because

  932. of sickness, stupidity, or some other

  933. reason. They lost the deeds to their own

  934. property.

  935. And they were often feeling the weight

  936. of their sin. [clears throat] They knew

  937. what it was like during the Babylonian

  938. captivity to have the temple destroyed.

  939. So now the temple started again. And can

  940. can these animal sacrifices really

  941. somehow forgive my how does this work?

  942. Promise given, promise fulfilled. My

  943. guess is they're thinking finally

  944. this guy, our hometown kid is going to

  945. bring all this freedom. We don't know

  946. how he's going to do it. Doesn't make

  947. sense to us. It's Joseph's kid. He

  948. promises it. He said he's going to do

  949. it. I'm in.

  950. Then look what Jesus does.

  951. He extends the promise

  952. and their joy turns to anger and their

  953. applause

  954. turns to murder.

  955. They're praising the sermon. This is our

  956. hometown son. Now they want to throw him

  957. off the cliff and kill him. Why? Well,

  958. it all has to do with two illustrations.

  959. he gives. And you may not uh

  960. understand the illustrations.

  961. [clears throat] We don't have time for

  962. me to lay them all out in detail. Let me

  963. just tell you briefly about the two

  964. illustrations. One's with Elijah Ja and

  965. one's with Elisha. I know their names

  966. sound alike. Um if you want to know who

  967. always comes first, J comes before S.

  968. And so Elijah comes before Elisha. J

  969. before S. That's how it works. So you

  970. can check these out. They're in the Old

  971. Testament, right? One's in First Kings,

  972. one's in 2 Kings 5. Here's how they go.

  973. Um, [clears throat]

  974. Elijah is a prophet in the northern

  975. kingdom of Israel. The king of Israel at

  976. that time is Ahab.

  977. And he's a terrible king. He's wretched.

  978. He's more wretched than the pagan

  979. nations around him. Now, one of the

  980. things that Ahab does to kind of

  981. consolidate power, he marries Jezebel.

  982. Now, Jezebel comes from Siden. And

  983. Jezebel comes from a family of priests

  984. that worship idols in Siden.

  985. And uh back in Elijah's day, God says,

  986. "I had enough of this." And so, I'm

  987. going to bring a famine on the land. Oh,

  988. the whole ter there's going to be a

  989. famine. And so for three and a half

  990. years, Jesus quotes this. Three and a

  991. half years there's a famine. You know,

  992. in three and a half years, nothing's

  993. growing. There's no water. I mean,

  994. things are terrible, right? There's a

  995. drought. So God says to Elijah, "Hey,

  996. Elijah, look, I don't I don't want you

  997. to die like a lot of the other people."

  998. So you are to go to Zerapath.

  999. Where's Zerapath?

1000. Oh yeah. In Siden. What? Imagine you're

1001. Elijah. Elijah, you want me to go to

1002. Jezebel's hometown? You want me to go

  1003. where the idolatrous

1004. pagans are? Jezebel's killing all the

1005. prophets of God in Israel. You want me

1006. to go back to her home? That's right.

1007. You go there. Well, he goes there and um

1008. eventually God says, "I'll take care of

1009. you there." And one of the first people

1010. he meets is an older woman, a widow, and

  1011. she's gathering sticks.

1012. And he says, "Hey, God sent me here. Um,

1013. have a little mission for you. Would you

1014. give me something to drink and uh, you

1015. know, bake me a little piece of bread,

1016. little roll, no hot dog, just a roll.

  1017. Bring me a roll. I'm really hungry. I

1018. haven't had much to eat and drink. Would

1019. you get bake me a little piece of bread,

1020. little biscuit, and uh, bring me some

1021. water?" She says, "Uh, huh? You're

  1022. asking the wrong woman.

1023. You know why I'm gathering these sticks?

1024. Because I've only got enough flour. I

1025. can't even fill my hand with it. And so

1026. I'm going to make I'm here gathering

1027. sticks to start a little fire. I'm going

1028. to make a little tiny biscuit for my son

1029. and me. We're going to eat the biscuit

1030. and die because there's nothing else

1031. that we have. Elijah is persistent. Ah,

1032. yeah. Yeah, yeah, I hear. Make make me

1033. make me a biscuit first.

1034. And she does. And you know what? The

1035. flour and the oil never run out until

  1036. the famine's over.

  1037. God sent Elijah

1038. to a gentile widow in Zerapath

1039. Siden. What's the point? Well, you can

1040. figure it out from Jesus' sermon. There

1041. were lots of widows. There were lots of

1042. widows that were starving in Israel. But

1043. God didn't send Elijah to any of them.

1044. He sent them to pagan Zerapath and Siden

1045. where all the idoltors are. And God

1046. through Elijah rescued a woman who

1047. didn't have the resources to survive.

1048. He said, "Oh, but I'm not. I got another

1049. illustration." Then there was a name.

1050. There's a guy named Non. Now, this is

  1051. Elisha s, right? Elisha.

  1052. Non is also a gentile. Non's also a

1053. pagan. And um [snorts] Non is not from

1054. Siden. He's from Syria. And in a lot of

1055. ways, Non's the opposite of the woman.

1056. The woman's dirt poor. Non is filthy

  1057. rich. The woman's a widow. Non has a

1058. wife. The woman is disconnected from

1059. everyone, right? She can't hold a job.

  1060. She's disconnected from society being a

1061. widow. Non is wellconed. In fact, he

1062. names the king as a friend. Non seems to

1063. have everything you need in life. Oh,

1064. yeah. One other thing, non has leprosy.

  1065. And you know what?

  1066. If you have everything

  1067. and you have leprosy,

  1068. you've got nothing.

1069. The woman doesn't have the resources to

  1070. feed herself.

1071. Name doesn't have the resources to heal

  1072. himself.

1073. Different ends of the continuum.

1074. They're both dying. They are both

1075. helpless. They are both hopeless.

1076. And God saves each of them. Gentile

1077. idoltors disconnected from God. Wealthy

1078. po. God say now the people in Nazareth

1079. are ticked. Why are they ticked? Well,

1080. because we want this Jubilee, all this

1081. freedom stuff to be for us. We don't

1082. want it to be for we don't want to share

1083. it with them. Especially not with these

1084. pagans. Especially not with these

1085. Gentiles. We don't want anybody from

1086. Zerapath coming. We certainly don't want

1087. Syrians coming. We don't want any of

1088. them to come. They're angry. In fact,

1089. rather than say, "hm, I wonder if I have

1090. this thing right." No, they want to

1091. destroy the messenger rather than

1092. question if the message is correct.

1093. They want to kill Jesus. Well, Jesus

1094. just kind of walks through the crowd and

1095. moves on. Now, remember, we're looking

1096. back. We look back the little bit of

1097. Luke. We look back at Isaiah. Look all

1098. the way back at Leviticus 25, Jubilee.

1099. Um, let me show you what Luke's doing.

1100. Luke uses Luke 4 and this sermon where

1101. the promise is given, the promise is

1102. fulfilled, the promise is extended.

1103. That now becomes the outline of his

  1104. gospel.

1105. More than any other gospel,

1106. Luke is always speaking how Jesus comes

  1107. for the outsiders.

  1108. I'm guessing uh

1109. Luke maybe teared up a little bit

1110. when he heard about a gentile widow and

1111. we heard about a gentile

  1112. general

1113. because Luke was a gentile.

1114. Luke was not a Jew.

1115. Dr. Luke was a gentile.

1116. My guess is he wrote his gospel and you

1117. you we're going to read through these

1118. next few weeks. You read on your own.

1119. Luke's always listed lifting up the gent

1120. you know what Jesus came for Gentiles

  1121. too.

1122. Luke's lifting up women. Women play a

1123. priority role in Luke's gospel. The

1124. unclean people, the filthy, the

1125. Samaritans. The parable of the good

  1126. Samaritan. That's in Luke. What's Luke

1127. saying? Jesus came, he extended the

1128. promise. And what does Luke do in his

1129. gospel? He keeps extending the promise,

1130. extending the grace that Jesus came to

  1131. purchase.

1132. Now, you can probably guess before we uh

  1133. conclude here,

1134. maybe I'll say it like this.

1135. The problem with the congregation in

  1136. Nazareth,

1137. they drew the boundaries of God's grace

  1138. a little too tight.

1139. Jesus extended the boundaries and they

  1140. hated it.

  1141. I just wonder,

1142. did we try to do we draw the boundaries

  1143. too tight?

1144. This freedom, this deliverance, all this

1145. stuff, this freedom, it's for me and

1146. people like me. It's for people of my

1147. political party, my socioeconomic level,

1148. my educational level, people who are

1149. like me more than unlike me. Um, that's

1150. what the congregation in Nazareth was

  1151. saying.

1152. And the rest of Luke's gospel says, you

1153. better stop drawing boundaries because

1154. we draw them, God keeps breaking them.

1155. God extends the gospel of grace.

1156. And can I tell you one other thing?

  1157. Jubilee, Isaiah 61, Luke 4,

  1158. all about freedom.

  1159. Freedom from debt.

  1160. Freedom from oppression, bondage,

1161. freedom from loss, freedom from sin.

  1162. Here's an interesting thing.

  1163. The Bible often uses

  1164. physical and material problems,

1165. difficulties to speak to spiritual and

1166. eternal realities. You ever wonder why

1167. um sometimes for one case they bring a

1168. paralytic to g the guy can't walk and

1169. what's Jesus say? Your sins are

1170. forgiven. I'm thinking Jesus the guy

1171. can't walk. Why would he forgive?

1172. Sometimes he uses physical maladies to

1173. talk about our spiritual. How often do

1174. we do the same thing? We speak about the

1175. debt of our sin, the bondage of the

1176. enemy. We speak about the loss that

1177. we've incurred because of rebellion

1178. against God. And we speak and what's

1179. Jubilee really about. Now, don't get me

1180. wrong. All of those physical material

  1181. things will occur.

1182. But right now, we live in the pause.

1183. He's been Jesus has come to proclaim

1184. good news to the poor. You got to admit

  1185. you're poor. Admit you're hopeless,

1186. helpless. And when you do, you're in a

1187. perfect position to first receive the

1188. deliverance that Jesus brings for our

1189. sin. Jubilee happened on the day of

1190. atonement. And one day all of that

1191. freedom and liberty will be experienced

1192. when Christ brings Jubilee in

  1193. completeness.

1194. All in a sermon in his hometown. The joy

1195. and praise applause went to thoughts of

1196. homicide very quickly. I hope that's not

  1197. our case. Let's pray.

1198. Lord, we give you thanks for the sermon.

1199. And Lord, even uh with our

1200. very myopic view, we can look back and

1201. see some really cool things in Luke. We

1202. look back further in the Bible and we

1203. see it really is one big story and Jesus

1204. is the point and the purpose. Lord, help

1205. us to uh look back and look ahead to

1206. experience all that Jesus brings in the

1207. proclaiming good news to the poor, but

1208. help us also to look forward to the day

1209. when true justice and grace will be

1210. experienced in full jubilee to the

1211. utmost forever. We pray in his name.

  1212. Amen.

1213. >> Please stand with us as we continue to

  1214. worship Jesus.

1215. How great [singing and music] the chasm

1216. that lay between us. How high [singing]

  1217. the mountain [music]

  1218. I could not climb.

1219. In desperation, [singing and music]

  1220. I turned to heaven

1221. and spoke [music] your name into the

  1222. night.

1223. Then [music] through the [singing]

  1238. The God of wages

1239. stepped down from glory [music]

1240. to bear my sin and bear my shame.

  1241. The cross has spoken.

  1243. I am forgi.

  1249. [music and singing] Hallelujah.

1250. Praise the one who [music] set me free.

  1251. [singing]

  1252. Hallelujah.

1253. Death [music] has lost its grip on

1254. [singing] me. You have broken every

  1255. chain. There's salvation [singing]

1264. salvation in your name, [music] Jesus

  1265. Christ, my living

  1266. hope. [music]

1267. Then came the [singing] morning [music]

  1268. that sealed the promise.

1269. Your buried body [singing and music]

  1270. began to breathe.

1271. Out of the silence, [singing and music]

  1272. the roaring lion

1273. declared, "The grave has no

1274. [music and singing] claim on me."

  1275. Came the morning

  1276. that silver,

  1277. [music]

  1278. your buried [singing] body

  1279. began to [music] breathe.

  1280. Out of the silence,

  1281. Lord,

  1282. [music and singing]

1283. declare the grave has no claim on me.

  1284. [music]

1285. Jesus, yours is the victory.

  1286. [music]

  1287. Oh, [singing]

  1288. hallelujah. [music]

1289. Praise the one who set me free.

  1290. [singing]

  1291. Hallelujah.

1292. You has lost his [music] strength for

1293. me. You have broken every chain. This

1294. salvation in [singing] your name. Jesus

  1295. [music] Christ my living.

  1296. [music] Hallelujah.

1297. Praise the one who set me free. [music]

  1298. Hallelujah.

1299. Death has lost its breath on [music] me.

1300. You have broken every chain. There's

1301. salvation in your name. Jesus Christ my

  1302. living.

  1303. [music]

1304. Jesus [singing] Christ my living.

  1305. [music]

1306. God, [singing] you are my living

  1307. home. [music]

1308. So maybe the theme of our morning is

1309. that we've experienced this grace, but

1310. sometimes you want to draw those

1311. boundaries a little tighter than God

1312. does. Where does God want to extend them

1313. this week? To your neighbors, somebody

1314. at work, at school. be part of what God

1315. wants to do to extend that promise

1316. [music] beyond where we think it should

1317. go, where it needs to go. If you would

1318. like to talk to someone or would like to

1319. pray with someone, please come forward.

1320. There'll be people up here to do that.

  1321. Have a great week.

  1322. came [music] to my

  1323. call.

  1324. You answer

  1325. my

  1326. life.

  1327. Lifted

  1328. high.

  1329. lifted

  1330. my life.

  1331. We lifted high.

  1332. Feel.

  1333. I call you

  1334. to my rescue.

  1335. I just want

  1336. to beware.

  1337. I remember

  1338. wide.

  1339. >> [music]

  1340. [singing]

  1341. >> So you

  1342. made a way

  1343. to build

  1344. at the cross.

  1345. I

  1346. broke my chain.

  1347. [singing]

  1348. Thank you

  1349. for

  1350. Jesus.

  1351. Thank you.
