12 Years of God's Faithfulness (Joshua 4) | Pastor Keith Pittman

Today is a significant day for us as a community, but I also believe it's going to be transformational for us.

Joshua chapter 4, starting at verse number one, the word of the Lord says this.

When all the nation had finished passing over the Jordan, the Lord said to Joshua, Take twelve men from the people from each tribe of man and command them, saying, Take twelve stones from here and cut out of the midst of the Jordan from the very place where the priest's feet stood firmly, and bring them over with you and lay them down in a place where you will lodge tonight.

Then Joshua called twelve men from the people of Israel, whom he had appointed, a man from each tribe.

And Joshua said to them, Pass on before the ark of the Lord your God in the midst of the Jordan, and take each one of you a stone upon his shoulder, according to the number of the tribes of the people of Israel.

This may be a sign among you that when your children ask in time to come, What do these stones mean to you?

Then you shall tell them that the waters of the Jordan were cut off before the Ark of the Covenant of the Lord.

And when it passed over the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off.

So the stones shall be to the people of Israel a memorial forever.

What do these stones mean to you?

I believe that God has been doing some incredible things amongst us as a community.

I believe God's been doing incredible things amongst every one of us.

And if we're not careful, we'll lose sight of the faithfulness of God if we allow too much distance to pass between us reminding ourselves of what God has done.

What does it mean to you?

Today I want to analyze this text and many others in a way that I hope can be encouraging for us.

And if you're taking notes, I've simply entitled today's message, Twelve Stones.

Let's pray.

Lord, we thank you so much for your faithfulness.

We thank you for your goodness.

We thank you for being with us, preserving our church for the past 12 years.

We thank you that we have a legacy that we can attach ourselves to that is ultimately rooted in Christ.

So, Lord, I just pray that you give us open eyes to see you, open ears to hear you, and open hearts to receive what it is that you have for us.

It's in Jesus' name that we pray.

Before you take your seats, turn to someone around you.

I'm telling they look good in our middle and high school students.

You guys are dismissed.

We're having a great service that is geared towards you right now.

You look good on this 12th anniversary.

You look good.

And amen.

I I'm I'm reminded of a moment not that long ago with with my my wife and I, and it's it's a sacred moment, but I want to invite you into this journey so you can see the the uniqueness of our relational dynamics.

Um I remember this day as if it was yesterday, and I was coming home after a series of long meetings, and and so Megan had said, like, hey, I know that you had anticipated that that you were going to cook, but I know that it's been a long day, so I'm I'm actually gonna cook.

Um instead, he is risen, the Lord is faithful and just.

My wife said she was going to cook.

I celebrate the goodness of God in every moment that I can.

And so I said, Hey, listen, um, I'll stop at the store on my way home, so that way it doesn't make any sense for you to run out to the store if I'm gonna be coming home anyway.

Again, I'm an amazing husband, I'm trying to serve my wife.

You stay home and continue to relax, I'm gonna bring all the ingredients.

Here's the only thing that I ask for.

If you can take this next hour between the time I'm leaving now and I get to the and I get to the restaurant or get to the grocery store, if you could just go ahead and put all the ingredients that we need into our shared note.

I got you, babe.

I got you.

So I begin to see things pop up on our shared notes of the things that we need at the grocery store.

I tell her, I even tell her, I give her a 10-second breakdown.

It's like, hey, in about 10 minutes, I'm gonna be arriving at the grocery store.

Is everything in?

Are we locked?

Are we good?

Yep, we're good.

I get into the grocery store, and you have to know this about my personality, my temperament.

It could be a little bit of OCD, it could be a lot of things that are happening at this point, but at this point, I'm 51 and we're just gonna go with it.

Um, so when I go into grocery stores, I like to know where I'm going.

I don't like to wander around.

It just seems crazy to me to be in aisle three, then walk over to aisle nine, then walk over to aisle four, then walk back over to the fro.

Like that's madness to me.

So I'm asking, just tell me what we need so I can walk through the aisles accordingly, and then I can get out of the store.

I get the list and I do what I do that I always do.

I make my way to the store, I ring everything up, I'm walking out of the store, and then I notice a new thing pops up that we need to get.

I love my wife, I dearly do.

And I and so I'm like, okay, like I have an I have a I have a choice to make in this moment.

How am I going to respond?

And I'm I'm choosing love.

And so I take the things to the car, I come back inside, and I pick up the items and I text her, like, hey, are we good now?

She's like, Yeah, everything is good.

I I ring those things up, I I get outside to the car, I see another thing pop up on the shared note.

At this point now, I think she's playing in my face because I'm like, okay, like, is she watching, is she watching my movements, and she's just trying to find a way to see if she can see what's going to come out of me.

I I don't even blink.

I go back into the store and once again I pick up said items.

And this time, as I'm walking out of the store, um, I I see another thing pop up.

So now I'm at a point now where I'm about to lose my mind.

I'm just gonna be completely honest with our with our church family.

I'm like, okay, like what is what is happening?

I I ring those items up and then I get a phone call when I get into the car, and she's like, Hey, are you still there?

I'm like, okay, like Lord help me.

I I know that the tomb is empty, but right now my heart is full of anger.

And so I'm like, okay, like, yes, what what else do you need?

And she said, I need one more thing.

I need to make sure we get the garlic bread.

I go back in, I see a guy, like, hey man, have you been here before?

I'm like, man, mind your business.

Like, I'm just trying, I'm just trying to get through this moment where I can get home.

And then somehow, because of the timing of it, when I was in the store earlier, I was able to get in and get out fairly quick.

Somehow, everyone in the area decided to go to the store at that last moment.

So now the lines are about a million people long.

So now I'm beginning to rethink my entire life.

Every every aspect of it.

I'm in the line, I'm like, how did I get here?

Like, I was in that aisle, I worked through all these things, and so I grabbed my phone just to find a way to dissociate in the moment.

I remember vividly as I pulled my phone out and I looked at the screen.

Like, some of y'all Android users may not know anything about this, so this is from an Apple user, but you know how you have like those memory things that pop up, and it says to you, like, on this day.

And when I looked at that image, it showed me a picture of my wife just smiling.

And it said, On this day, you guys went on this vacation.

And I clicked it, and I just saw a series of these beautiful images of her smiling and just looking at me and saying, You're gonna go into the store as many times as I need you to.

I just saw this look, and even though I was filled with frustration because that annoys me so much, that memory made every amount of that anxiety to disappear.

Because watch this the right memory at the right time has the ability to change everything.

What we're seeing in this text right here is that we know that the way that our lives are wired, it is so easy for us to forget the faithfulness of God.

It is so easy for us to forget the goodness of God, and if we don't build a rhythm of regularly remembering God's faithfulness, we could find ourselves facing the exact same situation in a different time, and we're looking at it as if God didn't get you through the previous one.

God tells the children of Israel in this text that I want you to take 12 stones, and these stones are going to mean something to you.

And there's a generation that's gonna come after you, and they're not gonna understand why you worship the way that you do.

There's a generation that's gonna come after you, and they're not gonna understand why you pray the way that you do.

There's gonna be a generation that comes after you, and they're not gonna know why you orient your life around the things of God the way that you do.

But it now becomes your responsibility to say, Let me tell you why I serve, because God served me in my season when I was dealing with despair.

Let me tell you why I give.

It's because someone blessed me at one point when I didn't have anything less, so I know that it's the least that I can do.

Let me show you why I show up because God showed up for me.

You begin to recognize that the stones or the things that you live today become the stories of what God does that becomes an anchor for the next generation.

The stones are not meant to tell the story about a river, but the stones are meant to celebrate the faithfulness of God who got you on the other side of it.

The children of Israel at this point, the Bible understands and it tells us that they've been 400 years in bondage, 40 years in the wilderness, and they're finally at a space where they're about to occupy the promised land.

Now, I I feel remiss if I don't take an opportunity to explain to you the significance of the promised land, because many of us have been misled for many a year believing that the promised land was the blessing of God.

The fact of the matter is the blessing of God was on the people.

The promised land was simply the place that could sustain the blessing that was on their life.

I don't know if you heard that, because some of us have been making ourselves to believe that I will be blessed when I get to this destination.

When I get married, then I'll be blessed.

When I finish school, then I will be blessed.

When everything lines up, then I will be blessed.

No, my friend, the blessing is with you.

Those environments are simply created to sustain the blessing and favor that's on your life.

You were blessed where you are.

That's simply the place that can sustain the blessing on you.

The children of Israel, they were blessed while they were in Egypt, which is why God sustained them.

They were blessed while they are in the wilderness, which is why God sustained them.

And they are blessed as they're going into the promised land, that's why God sustained them.

You were blessed exactly where you are.

The Bible tells us that the children of Israel are at a space that can feel a little bit like deja vu, because they're about to enter into the promised land, and the thing that's a barrier between them and the promises of God is a body of water that is referred to as the Jordan River.

The deja vu that we're talking about is about 40 years earlier, their ancestors were at the Red Sea, and they were at the edge of the walking into freedom, and the same thing seems to happen.

There's a calling ahead of me, but not a clear path, and I don't know what to do with it.

A little bit of deja vu, but the generation that is standing here at the Jordan River is a different generation that was there at the Red Sea.

The previous generation ultimately all died off, and so they were no longer going to be living off of the stories of what God did then.

God was about to create a new story in them now.

Ah, there's some of us that we've heard stories about the miracles of God.

We've heard our grandmothers tell us about how God showed up in a moment where they didn't expect it.

We've we've heard people tell us stories about how God parted things and he made a path straight.

But God is saying to us as a community that you will no longer live on the residue of what God did through somebody else, that he's establishing a testimony uniquely in you today, that God is shifting and doing something new in that community right now.

You're no longer going to live off of your parents' prayer.

There's something that God wants to do in you specifically.

The text tells us that when we look at this, there's a couple of key principles that I hope can be encouraging for us that I want you to write down.

Here's the first thing that I see when I look at this entire narrative.

The first thing that I see is that God goes first.

Let that resonate for just a moment.

God goes first.

In Joshua chapter 3, this is where we kind of get the backstory of that leads us into Joshua chapter 4.

Here's what it says.

Joshua chapter 3, it says that the ark of the covenant of the Lord your God will go ahead of them.

The ark literally represented the throne room of God, it represented the presence of God.

And it says that God went ahead of them.

It's possible that they could have been looking at the place that God was calling them to go to.

It's possible they could have been so filled with ambition that they could have outpaced the very presence of God.

I know that I've been there in my own life where I've been filled with such ambition and such excitement that sometimes I could say, Move aside, Jesus, I got it from here.

But what the text tells us is that God needed to go first.

Why was this important?

Because verse number four tells us that they're in a territory that they have never been.

Watch this.

They're in a space that they never been to before.

They're entering into a season that is completely unfamiliar to them.

And if they go into that environment without letting God lead their steps, it's possible for them to magnify the size of the obstacle and minimize the power of the God that's led them to where they are.

Because what if we go into this space that I'm supposed to go to and there's giants there, but you didn't let God lead you?

What if I go to this space that I know that God has called us to go into, but I may feel overwhelmed?

I I remember many years ago when teaching my children how to swim.

And specifically, I think a lot about Daniera when we were teaching her how to swim.

And there's this moment when we're standing in the water, and I'm trying to convince her to jump into the water.

And she's looking at the water, she's looking at me, she's looking at the water, and for the next 30 minutes, I'm trying to convince her of why it's gonna be okay.

The water's not that deep.

It's gonna be okay.

You can gut in here.

Like I'm telling you, the water's not that cold.

Like I was trying to use every rational excuse to help her to take the necessary step that she was supposed to take.

But it wasn't until I looked her in the eye and I said to her, Listen, your father is here already.

I got you.

I'm not gonna let anything happen to you.

I look at me, I'm not gonna let anything happen to you.

I'm already standing in the place that you're afraid to go to.

Your father has got you.

It wasn't my my my convincing her that the water wasn't gonna harm her that allowed her to jump off into the water.

The reality of it was it was me communicating that her father was already present.

I'm not sure who needs to hear that, but God is telling you that you're standing on the edge of something that you know that you need to go into.

You're on the edge of a decision that you need to make, you're you're on the edge of an uncomfortable space that you've never been to before.

And right now we're waiting and hoping for the fear to disappear in order for you to take the next step.

But that is not going to disappear.

What happens is when I recognize that God is with me, fear no longer has a rightful place.

Some of us have been waiting for the right opportunity instead of recognizing that if God goes first, that if God before me, it doesn't matter who stands against me, because God is going to fight my battles when we let God truly go first.

I remember when Deneira finally got that messaging, she jumped off, I wasn't paying attention, she almost drowned, but that's a whole nother story.

We're not going.

She should have been looking at me.

I didn't have my hands out, and it was kind of on her.

But she survived and she's here, she's taking photos today.

My point is this my point is this when God is leading us to go into a space, it is it is our responsibility to put him first, to recognize us.

David says it this way in Psalm 139.

He says, Lord, where can I go that you're not already there?

I I can literally go to the to the highest mountain and you're already there.

I can go to the lowest depths and you're already there.

The water does not part when you feel ready.

The water that you're facing parts when it confronts the power of the living God.

But we gotta let God go first.

Here's the other thing that I see in this passage is because we let God go first, but then we also have to stand firm while we're in the middle.

Because we're gonna enter seasons where standing in the middle is uncomfortable, that standing in the middle is challenging, but we need to stand firm even in the middle.

Joshua 3 17 says it this way it says that the priests were bearing the ark of the covenant and stood firmly on dry ground in the midst of the Jordan, and all of Israel was passing on dry ground until the entire nation finished passing.

I want you to understand what's really being asked of these men.

Okay, they these men were priests who were set apart, who've been commissioned to carry the presence of God.

Now, the Ark of the Covenant, it's hard for us to even imagine the weight of it.

It was made with layered wood on top of acacia wood, it was gold and and all these other things, and so so many guesstimate that it could have been upwards of 500 pounds.

These poles would have gone into it that allowed at least four priests to carry it on their shoulders into this space.

And and what's so significant about this moment is that they're walking into a place and they're needing to stand still and wait for everyone to go ahead of them.

I often think about the endurance that it takes to do that.

I think about the exhaustion that could have kicked in while you're waiting for possibly over a million people to pass for you, while you're standing there holding this weight that could become crippling.

Something I've learned in life is that beginnings they they run on adrenaline, endings, they they run on relief.

But the middle that runs on endurance.

And the middle is the place where most of us feel that need to quit.

These these priests were standing in the middle of their assignment while everyone was passing by them.

Don't miss that.

I'm standing in the place that God told me to be, carrying his presence, and everyone around me is moving forward.

I'm not sure if you've ever been at a space where you feel like I'm doing what God told me to do, but everyone around me seems like they're the ones making progress.

Everyone around me is the one that seems like they're the ones getting the promotions.

Everyone around me seems like they're the ones who are getting recognized.

Some of us are standing in an assignment right now and it feels heavy.

It's parenting when you don't have the proper support.

It's it's resources that are running low.

It's it's a marriage that is struggling, it's it's serving on Sunday but still hurting on Monday.

And it's in this space, if we're not careful, we'll we'll feel the need to give up or put the presence down and go back to doing things on your own terms.

But if we can just look at this a little bit differently, we can actually see something unique in this text.

Because while the priests were carrying the presence of God in an uncomfortable space, they were actually closer to God than anyone else.

Don't miss that.

It was heavy, there was a burden, there was a challenge, but but they were in the space where the presence of God was closer to them than anyone else.

There are going to be some seasons that you enter into where the presence of God will meet you in the meat in the midst of your strongest discomfort.

There will be some spaces that you will find yourself in that even in my most big challenges, that somehow God is closer to me even in that space.

Megan, I remember when we were significantly younger and I got into that car accident and I was no longer able to work, and you were the only one that could sustain our household, and we didn't even know how we had enough money to keep the lights on, and we were struggling, but somehow we drew closer to God.

I'm not sure if you remember that when we moved from up north and we moved to Jacksonville, we we didn't have a lot of resources and we were struggling and we were waiting for for people to show up, but but somehow we were drawing closer to God through it.

I'm not sure if you remember that that when we said yes to to stepping in and taking leadership of this church and watching people leave and going through a global pandemic and people backsliding and people back slapping you in your back and then us overseeing two churches at the same time and people not understanding the calling on our life, but somehow we drew closer even in those difficult assignments.

I'm not sure where I'm talking to, but but some of us have been going through some difficult times and we don't recognize that even in those challenging seasons, that God is closer than you could ever imagine.

That he's with you in this when it's hard, he's with you in the darkness, he's with you in the challenges.

I've seen in my own life that God is faithful and he's present even in those challenging moments.

Isaiah says it this way that when I pass through the waters, I shall not be overwhelmed.

Paul says it to the Galatians church that in due season you will reap if you faint not.

He also tells the church Ephesus, he says, having done all to stand, continue to stand.

Some of us have been standing and we're beginning to grow weary, but God is closer than you can imagine.

Some of us are wanting to give up on our marriage, but God is closer than you can imagine.

So some of us want to give up on that dream, but God is closer than you can imagine.

From a distance, it may look like the priests were holding the Ark of the Covenant, but from a different perspective, you'll actually see that the Ark of the Covenant was actually the thing that's holding the priest.

It was holding them together, it was preserving them in the challenge, it was sustaining them even when it was not easy.

When we're in the middle, our responsibility and our response in those moments is to be people that continue to recognize that I am going to stand firm in the middle.

Here's the third thing I want to say as we prepare to wrap up.

We need to be people that turn our stones into stories.

Because you would think that at the end of this passage, that they pass over on the other side and they have a happy ending and they can celebrate.

But the Bible says that God gives them different instructions.

He actually tells them that out of the very river that you passed over, I need you to bring 12 stones out of it.

He didn't say get 12 stones from a different region.

He didn't say get 12 stones when you get settled, but he said, From the very barrier, from the very obstacle, I need you to get 12 stones and stack them and let them serve as a statement.

This is not decoration, but it's meant to be a declaration.

Let's be honest about stones.

They're hard.

They're difficult.

They're challenging.

They can sometimes cause us to stumble.

They can be heavy.

It could be the season that almost took us out.

The question isn't if you have stones, the question is what do the stones communicate in your life?

Because it's in these moments important for us to have an eternal perspective.

Because two people can go through the same journey and have a completely different testimony as they tell the story.

Half glass full or half glass empty, that those things are not personality traits, but it's a matter of perspective.

Same storm but different story.

Jesus tells his disciples, he says to them, Do this in remembrance of me.

He was communicating to them the importance of making sure that they tell the story of God's faithfulness.

Before the church was structured in the way that it is now, before we had services and planning centers and strategies, the way that the gospel spread was by people gathering together, taking communion, and telling the story of God's faithfulness through Christ Jesus.

They turned the stones into story.

Jesus died, that's a stone, but but he was raised from the dead, and now you have access to life.

They turned the stone into a story.

If we're not careful, we won't tell the stories of God's faithfulness.

If we're not careful, we'll allow enough distance and time to separate us from God's faithfulness.

And then sadly, the reality that we may find ourselves in is that we may face a very similar storm, and we're doing it without recognizing that the same God that got you through the one in the past is the same God that is with you even now.

Your testimony, your testimony is not meant to be something that we keep to ourselves.

Because when we do, we'll start logging our victories as coincidence, as things just worked out, and we'll lose God's faithfulness in it altogether.

Revelation says this that we overcome by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of our testimony.

Your testimony is not a memory, it's a weapon.

And the enemy wants to make sure you keep it holstered.

Because the moment that you begin to name the stones in your life and declare God's faithfulness in them, it no longer is a tombstone that marks where you died.

It becomes a memorial that's that signifies the place that you became new in Christ.

Don't allow the things that have happened to you in your past to have the final say.

We can either say, look at what this storm did to me, or look at what God did with me in the midst of the storm.

The Bible says, Let the redeemed of the Lord say so.

Not if you feel like it, not if you think it.

But it says, let the redeemed of the Lord say so.

That if God healed you, say so.

That if you got on the other side, then say so.

If you got those chains broken off, then say so.

It's the power of recognizing that we all have stones, but I've been redeemed and I am going to say so.

The number 12 in scripture has deep symbolism.

It represents divine order, it represents foundation and structure, and I've seen in my own life how that pattern has been repeated, and I've seen it in our church.

12 years of God's faithfulness.

In 2014, our church was planted with a vision of being a space where people from all backgrounds could come and experience the goodness and faithfulness of God.

Pastors Josh and Becca Turner, they led a team here, hit the ground running, and a strong foundation was established.

People got saved.

Baptisms and people were reached because God went first.

But then we have another chapter, and that chapter is one that is marked by endurance.

In 2019, we had a transition of leadership similar to Moses and Joshua, and that transition of leadership meant a transition of defining who you are and where we're going.

Megan and I said yes to the calling in April of 2019.

Full of vision, full of hope.

But then we were marked with a global pandemic that shut the world down and shut the cloth the doors of our church for the better part of six months.

And in that time we had to scramble to launch an online ministry and really figure out what it means to serve and lead people remotely.

While simultaneously traveling back and forth to DC to serve our community up there, it was a season that we felt honestly felt like we were in the middle.

I'm at a standstill holding this thing up, and everything around me seems like it's moving, and there have been many moments where I felt like maybe we should put this down.

But God is faithful.

We came on the other side.

And when we came on the other side, we began to gather in what once used to fill an auditorium.

We started gathering inside of a wedding venue that basically was about 70 to 75 people, and that was our beginnings all over again.

And if I can be honest with you, there are moments when I think back on that season and I say to myself, God, like what are you doing?

What look at what the pandemic did to us?

But I've changed my perspective, and I'm like, look at how faithful you've been, even in spite of us going through a global pandemic.

It's a matter of having an eternal perspective.

So then we have to redefine ourselves and scale down in preparation for scaling up, and then in that same time span, we we we went independent.

We we branched off from our sending church and we installed elders and leaders, forming ourselves in what God was uniquely calling us to do, going deeper in discipleship and relationships and getting the right people on the team and recognizing the faithfulness of God.

And then what comes next?

We we launched our all hands building campaign with the belief that God is calling us to have our own facility, a facility in which we could honor God in a way that we believe that He's called us to function.

And I've had to stand on this truth, family, that the facility is not evidence of God's blessing.

No, we were blessed in the pandemic.

The facility is simply the place that sustains the blessing that is on our life.

Because I believe that God has given us a vision that is uniquely one that is meant to be for people who have lost faith in God because of the wounds of the church, that we want to be a place of healing and refuge for those people.

We want to have our doors open to a community that no matter what your background is, that you can experience the love of Jesus and the grace of God no matter what no matter what wounds you come in here with.

We we want to have a facility that allows us to have a food pantry, that that there's no one in our proximity that should go a day without having a meal.

We we want to have a facility that allows us to provide clothing for people that sets them up so they can move forward to their next phase in life.

We we want to have a facility where we're not rushed because I have a clock that's telling me that I'm two minutes over, but that's an idea that's in the past because we can have altar calls and we're not wondering about if we got to get out of the way before the museum needs to go into their next thing.

I'm thankful for it, but God has more for us.

This is the year of more, and we believe that in these 12 years that God is just getting started, but it only happens because God goes first, we stand firm in the middle, and we turn every one of our stones into stories.

I want to lead us to a moment of worship, so I want to invite everyone to stand on our feet.

Because maybe for some of us, we're walking through our own challenges, we're walking into our own unknown season, we're we're walking into our own obstacles, and we can see the stones, and those stones have a different story in our narrative.

But I want to encourage you that as people of faith, it's not look at what this thing did to me, it's look at the faithfulness of God while we're still in it.

Because God is faithful and I've witnessed it.

God redeems and I've witnessed it.

God restores and I've witnessed it.

God breaks chains and I've witnessed it.

God still reaches the lost and I've witnessed it.

God still equips the found and I've witnessed it, that God still helps the hurting and I've witnessed it.

I've seen too much for me to go backwards.

I've seen God do too much for me to shrink back.

So I believe that if you don't have the faith to see it for yourself, then link arms with me.

I tell you that God is faithful, that God will do exactly what he said he's gonna do.

He is not slack concerning his promises, and it doesn't feel good, but don't you dare give up.

You keep holding on to the presence of God where you are, you turn those stones into stories and watch God get the glory because he is not done with us yet.

So, family, as we go into a time of worship, I want us to rearrange our stones and give names to them of God's faithfulness.

Lord, we thank you so much for your goodness.

We thank you for your grace, we thank you for the power, and we thank you for the reminder that these 12 years, these 12 stones, they mean something.

You're forming your people, you're laying a foundation, you're putting things in order, and you're establishing your covenant.

I pray that we can be reminded that you will never leave us or forsake us.
