  1. It seems like um summer is beginning to

  2. wind down now. And uh I was just

  3. thinking about this the other day. I was

  4. just thinking, what's the next big thing

  5. on the horizon? And it's um well, for

  6. me, probably. I was thinking for our

  7. family anyway. It's going to be

  8. Christmas. It's probably too early to

  9. start speaking about Christmas, isn't

  10. that? Apparently, it's not too early uh

  11. for the the shops to get the Christmas

  12. decorations out. Uh, I've already seen

  13. um shelves being loaded up with

  14. Christmas goods, but we do have a long

  15. well quite a long wait before we get

  16. there. And we are used to having a long

  17. wait for things, aren't we? We wait for

  18. our holiday. We wait for our family

  19. gettogethers.

  20. We wait for babies to be born. We wait

  21. on the phone. We wait to get served. We

  22. wait for payday to finally get there.

  23. Life is full of waiting.

  24. And of course, Abraham and Sarah are no

  25. strangers to waiting. God had called

  26. Abraham on this adventure of faith about

  27. 25 years previously. And the promises of

  28. God, they had got progressively

  29. grander and fuller in detail as the

  30. years had gone by. But all the while,

  31. Abraham and Sarah had been getting older

  32. and older, and the likelihood of these

  33. amazing promises actually being

  34. fulfilled seemed to be getting less and

  35. less.

  36. But 25 years later, the wait is finally

  37. over. And in our account today, we see

  38. how God worked to keep his uh promises

  39. uh using a variety of different

  40. approaches. So firstly, um through

  41. miraculous intervention and secondly

  42. through prayer and thirdly through the

  43. providence of God. They will form our

  44. three points for this morning. So

  45. firstly, the promise is fulfilled

  46. through the miraculous.

  47. It's wonderful that we have a number of

  48. expectant mothers in our congregation at

  49. the moment. That that's a real blessing.

  50. Um yet I'm told that around one in seven

  51. couples struggle to conceive.

  52. And for those struggling with that, it

  53. can be such a heartache and a source of

  54. great anguish,

  55. especially when some well-meaning person

  56. jokes. So you can have kids then come on

  57. or something similar

  58. in our culture. There's much more

  59. understanding about the issues and what

  60. what goes into contributes to to that.

  61. But in previous ages to to not be able

  62. to have a child

  63. was a great source of shame.

  64. And that's how Sarah felt. She'd been

  65. living all her adult life. So nearly 90

  66. years of real shame.

  67. She felt like a failure.

  68. Even her slave girl Hagar managed to

  69. give Abraham a child. I think it's hard

  70. for us to understand the depths of

  71. Sarah's misery

  72. and suffering.

  73. Her whole life

  74. was clouded by this.

  75. But then after so many years, God does

  76. something truly amazing, truly

  77. miraculous, something that was so

  78. contrary to nature at that point in her

  79. life, so unbelievable

  80. that it could only be by the hand of

  81. God. Verses 1 and two, the Lord visited

  82. Sarah as he had said, and the Lord did

  83. to Sarah, as he had promised. And Sarah

  84. conceived and bore Abraham a son in his

  85. old age at the time which God had spoken

  86. to him. Did did you notice what's

  87. happening there?

  88. The Lord visited. The Lord did. And then

  89. verse two, at the time God said, the

  90. writer is making abundantly clear the

  91. Lord did this. I mean to be clear that

  92. the normal biological methods with

  93. Abraham were employed to bring this

  94. about. Uh but God intervened in a

  95. miraculous way.

  96. A mother apparently is classed as a

  97. geriatric mother when you're over 35. I

  98. think the proper term now is advanced

  99. maternal age. If you're over 35, I

  100. wonder what they would call Sarah at 90.

  101. She was way beyond any conceivable

  102. maternal age. for the first 90 years of

  103. her life. Did Sarah understand why she

  104. couldn't have children? Did she

  105. understand that? No, of course she

  106. didn't. But when she finally holds Isaac

  107. in her arms and looked into his little

  108. eyes and squished his soft little hand,

  109. she still didn't understand why. Why

  110. have I had to wait this long? But she

  111. could be sure of this.

  112. God is faithful.

  113. God has kept his promises.

  114. Even though it was a a ridiculous

  115. promise in one sense, a promise that she

  116. had really struggled to believe because

  117. naturally there was no way she could get

  118. pregnant at this age. It was just she

  119. had laughed at it because this was just

  120. it was unbelievable.

  121. And yet when she holds Isaac in her arm,

  122. she knew

  123. yes, God is faithful.

  124. God had promised her a son. And at just

  125. the time that he said, "Here, he was."

  126. See, this was humanly impossible. But

  127. that's how God wanted it. Even Sarah

  128. could hardly believe it herself. Verse

  129. six, and Sarah said, "God has made

  130. laughter for me." Wonder if there's a

  131. play on Isaac's name because it means

  132. he's he laughs. God has made laughter

  133. for me. This this boy and everyone who

  134. hears will laugh over me.

  135. She knows. She knows in herself. A

  136. 90-year-old woman having a baby is so

  137. crazy

  138. people will laugh in amazement at this.

  139. They go, "What? Really? Really?" But you

  140. couldn't deny it because the baby was

  141. there. So God has transformed her

  142. cynical laugh

  143. into a laugh of joy. After so much

  144. sorrow, finally

  145. there was joy.

  146. And I don't know about you, but perhaps

  147. there's been some things in your life

  148. when you you you look back or maybe the

  149. lives of others and there was pain and

  150. there was difficulty and you didn't

  151. understand and it went on for a long

  152. long long time and yet perhaps you've

  153. come out the other side of that and now

  154. you look back even even though it was

  155. tough you can see the hand of God

  156. leading, guiding, moving through those

  157. difficulties. Perhaps you can do that. I

  158. know I can in some things. I can see,

  159. yeah, God took me through those

  160. difficulties for a reason.

  161. But often

  162. we are not out the other side of that

  163. yet. And we are still in that waiting

  164. period wondering what on earth is going

  165. on? Why this?

  166. Why me?

  167. Why now?

  168. So we can take heart in this. God is

  169. faithful. Even when we do not

  170. understand,

  171. even when it's painful and the wait

  172. seems so, so long,

  173. there is hope.

  174. God is faithful. He will keep his

  175. promises. And sometimes he will turn

  176. things around in quite an amazing way.

  177. And we can't help but see, yeah, God's

  178. hand, it was in that. I couldn't see it

  179. at the time, but he was working in my

  180. life at that point.

  181. Sometimes we'll get to see that in this

  182. life.

  183. Other times it'll only be resolved in

  184. eternity.

  185. So for those of us struggling right now,

  186. for those of us who are still waiting,

  187. we can take heart because Sarah's

  188. lifelong weight reminds us God is

  189. faithful. He does keep his promises and

  190. nothing is impossible with God.

  191. What that means is sinful patterns in

  192. your life can be broken.

  193. Relationships

  194. can be restored.

  195. We can enter into new seasons.

  196. And even in eternity,

  197. all things will come good.

  198. But sometimes we are called to wait

  199. and it can feel like a long wait.

  200. But you know this isn't the only story

  201. in the Bible about people waiting for a

  202. baby. In fact, it's quite a common theme

  203. in the Bible. People waiting for a baby.

  204. But there is one particular baby I want

  205. to just mention at this moment.

  206. Because as the promises given to Abraham

  207. had unfolded over time, become clearer

  208. about what was going to happen. So the

  209. promises of this other child unfolded

  210. over time right from Genesis 3 which I

  211. believe the people doing that the Bible

  212. um course read this morning. So even in

  213. Genesis 3 when God's promises the women

  214. woman's offspring would crush the

  215. serpent's head.

  216. That's where it started. And then

  217. throughout the millennia, those promises

  218. were repeated and expanded and became

  219. more and more detailed until finally

  220. even in a even more miraculous way. The

  221. Holy Spirit overshadowed Mary and she

  222. became pregnant so that Jesus could be

  223. said to be both the son of God and the

  224. son of man.

  225. So as to his humanity, Jesus was the

  226. descendant of Abraham and Isaac.

  227. So that's why Isaac was so important

  228. because it's through Abraham, Isaac and

  229. Jacob, that this long awaited, long

  230. promised Messiah, Jesus, would be born.

  231. The one through whom God's promises to

  232. Abraham would be fully fulfilled.

  233. And it's through Jesus

  234. that Abraham would be a blessing to all

  235. nations on earth.

  236. There was a long wait for Isaac and

  237. there was an evil even longer wait for

  238. Jesus.

  239. And you know what?

  240. Jesus promised he would return.

  241. And right now we are a waiting people,

  242. aren't we? And it's our long wait.

  243. And we might think, well, can I really

  244. believe that? People might joke about

  245. it, laugh about it, think, is he ever

  246. really coming?

  247. But just as God kept his promises to

  248. Abraham and Sarah, and just as God kept

  249. his promise to send a savior in the

  250. first place, so Jesus will keep his

  251. promise to return. Just because the wait

  252. is long, don't be tempted to think it's

  253. not going to happen. God is faithful. He

  254. keeps his promises.

  255. Jesus is coming.

  256. Well, Sarah responds in amazement and

  257. gratitude to God. And that is wholly

  258. appropriate obviously. And Abraham

  259. responds as well. He responds in an

  260. appropriate way too. And he is obedient.

  261. Uh so in verse three he calls this his

  262. son by the name God had given him. And

  263. uh verse four Abraham circumcises Isaac

  264. as was commanded by God. His obedience

  265. then follows God's grace in giving them

  266. this son. And it should be no different

  267. from us. God has given us his son and

  268. our response should be no less than

  269. theirs should it. So delight in Jesus,

  270. joy in Jesus, amazement, but also

  271. obedience.

  272. The God of the universe has miraculously

  273. intervened

  274. in our situation. He's given us this

  275. precious son. He was born as a baby. He

  276. grew up to be our savior to lift us up

  277. out of our sin and out of our shame and

  278. give us real solid lasting hope.

  279. So, should we not respond to Jesus

  280. in awe

  281. and in obedience?

  282. I wonder how are you responding to Jesus

  283. this morning?

  284. How are you responding to him?

  285. Is it I'll give you this much Jesus, but

  286. I'm not going to give you my all.

  287. I'll sort of take you as a a savior, but

  288. I'm not going to get baptized.

  289. I'll um I'll I'll take the sort of the

  290. nice things that I like, but I'm I'm not

  291. going to commit myself to serving you. I

  292. I I wonder how are you responding to

  293. this great divine miraculous

  294. intervention into the world? How are you

  295. responding to Jesus?

  296. Back to Isaac. Sadly, not everyone was

  297. quite so delighted at this new arrival.

  298. And things were about to get rather

  299. unpleasant. And we'll look at that in

  300. our second point. Promises fulfilled

  301. through prayer.

  302. I mentioned Christmas earlier, which may

  303. or may not be already something you're

  304. looking forward to or possibly dreading.

  305. I don't know. Um, but Christmas

  306. obviously time we celebrate, we look

  307. forward to, we wait for. In Abraham's

  308. culture, they didn't celebrate Christmas

  309. because Jesus hadn't yet been born. But

  310. they did celebrate other things. It's

  311. okay to celebrate things, people. Um,

  312. and the the time they look forward to to

  313. celebrate was the time of weaning. And

  314. uh, that would take place back then when

  315. a child was between two or three years

  316. old. And it was customary to celebrate,

  317. to have a big do. And that's what

  318. Abraham does. There was this great

  319. feast. And I'm sure there was lots of

  320. fun and food and laughter, but something

  321. mars this wonderful celebration.

  322. Ishmael,

  323. he's laughing.

  324. It's a play on Isaac's name, which means

  325. he laughs.

  326. But this isn't the joyful laughing of

  327. Sarah in verse 6. This is a a mocking

  328. according to Galatians chapter 4 29.

    Galatians 4 chapter mention

  329. It's not merely a brotherly banter kind

  330. of laugh. This is a form of persecution.

  331. This is unkind. This is cruel. This is

  332. potentially dangerous.

  333. Why might this have happened? Well,

  334. we're not entirely We're not told, but

  335. it doesn't take that much effort to work

  336. out, does it? Up until then, Isaac uh

  337. up until Isaac had come along, Ishmael

  338. had been the only heir. But when Isaac

  339. does come along, everything changes. His

  340. dad obviously Abraham still loved

  341. Ishmael, but now everything seems to be

  342. about Isaac. You know, Isaac, the

  343. promised one, the chosen one, the

  344. miracle baby. I mean, how can you live

  345. up to that? And you can imagine why

  346. Ishmael might struggle. And now this

  347. huge feast is being thrown for this

  348. little two, three year old.

  349. And Ishmael's like, "Oh, great. What

  350. about me?"

  351. Oh, we don't know what he was doing. But

  352. Sarah saw it and she was not happy at

  353. all. And so she tells Abraham to get rid

  354. of that slave woman and her son. Now, as

  355. any parent will know, when your child is

  356. treated improperly, that arouses some

  357. deep and powerful emotions, doesn't it?

  358. All the protectiveness of a parent comes

  359. out.

  360. But perhaps there's more than just that

  361. raw parental rage here.

  362. Because although Sarah's words were

  363. spoken in anger,

  364. they are in accordance with God's will.

  365. Because Ishmael wasn't to share in the

  366. promise in the inheritance.

  367. God does have plans for Ishmael, but

  368. they have a different path to lead.

  369. Well, Abraham isn't quite on the same

  370. page as Sarah or as God at this point.

  371. And so in verse 11 it says it was very

  372. displeasing to Abraham. One commentator

  373. says the language is far too tame. He

  374. says Abraham explodes with anger at the

  375. idea.

  376. He loved his son. Of course he loved his

  377. son. And what's more Hagar had

  378. previously when a Hagar previously run

  379. away because of Sarah's bad treatment.

  380. What had happened? God had sent her

  381. right back. And this puts Abraham in an

  382. impossible situation. He's got the

  383. natural parental love for his son.

  384. I don't know whether he still had a

  385. relationship with Hagar or not, but

  386. she's referred to as his slave woman

  387. now, not Sarah's.

  388. And so what we've got also going on is

  389. possibly he thinks, well, God sent her

  390. back, so it's God's will that she stays

  391. with us. So he's got this things he

  392. loves his son. God sent Hagar and the

  393. son back to him and now he's got on the

  394. other side Sarah saying we've got to get

  395. rid of them. So you see the impossible

  396. situation is in. It's like well I think

  397. that God said that and I love my son and

  398. now Sarah is saying I've got to get rid

  399. of them. What's he going to do?

  400. It's a no-win situation. He's deeply

  401. distressed about it. But actually

  402. Abraham isn't in possession of all the

  403. facts here. For alough Sarah speaks out

  404. of anger, this seemingly heartless

  405. suggestion

  406. is actually the next step in God

  407. fulfilling his promises to Hagar and

  408. Ishmael.

  409. It's also safeguarding for Isaac, too.

  410. It's also worth noting, isn't it? I

  411. think that sometimes when disaster

  412. strikes and those unthinkable things

  413. happen in our lives

  414. in the moment we might not appreciate

  415. that it is the very calamity

  416. that has befallen us that is part of

  417. God's plan

  418. part that the next step in his plans for

  419. us to take us to where we need to be.

  420. It's almost impossible, I think, to see

  421. when you're in that moment and it hurts

  422. so much.

  423. But when we're not currently in that

  424. situation, it's good to become aware

  425. sometimes God does have to take us

  426. through those difficult times because it

  427. is the next step uh on in his plans for

  428. us, in his good plans for us.

  429. According to the codes of conduct of the

  430. day, the freedom of a slave is

  431. considered adequate compensation for an

  432. act of expulsion. So on the one hand,

  433. Hagar and Ishmael, they are expelled

  434. from safety, from the family, from uh

  435. the riches, the security, the provision

  436. and everything that they were used to.

  437. They're expelled. They lose all that.

  438. But on the other hand, they are being

  439. set free.

  440. Whereas Sarah wanted to wash her hands

  441. of the problem which let's face it she

  442. kind of created.

  443. God doesn't wash his hands of Hagar and

  444. Ishmael.

  445. And God repeats the promise that Abraham

  446. made back in chapter 17. He'd already

  447. spoken to Abraham about Ishmael that

  448. Ishmael will become a nation. He has a

  449. future.

  450. And so Abraham reassured by God, he

  451. rises the next day, early the next day.

  452. Remember that's his practice. something

  453. has to be done. He gets up early. He

  454. gets it done. He rises early the next

  455. day. He gives them some pro provisions

  456. and he sends them away. I think I think

  457. most parents here will appreciate the

  458. unspeakable pain that that act of

  459. obedience

  460. required

  461. or caused for Abraham.

  462. Of course, that's just a warm-up act.

  463. wait until next week.

  464. But parents,

  465. no doubt, you try to do what you can for

  466. your children, don't you? Try to bring

  467. them up in the ways of the Lord. Pray

  468. for them. You provide for them. You do

  469. all that you can. You love them. You

  470. model Christ to them.

  471. But there does come that point when we

  472. also have to trust them to God

  473. because we will not always be there. Our

  474. influence gets weaker as they get

  475. stronger.

  476. And at some point, we have to trust them

  477. to God. We have to say, "I cannot save

  478. you. I can point you towards the Savior.

  479. I cannot be out with you every single

  480. night that you're out with your friends.

  481. I cannot do all those things. I have to

  482. trust you to God. One day they will

  483. leave our sight, but they are never out

  484. of God's sight.

  485. Hagar and Ishmael, they are given

  486. supplies. They are sent packing. Um,

  487. she's given a skin of water, which is

  488. about 11 L apparently, which I guess

  489. would weigh about 11 kg. So, it's quite

  490. heavy. She has to carry that. But in a

  491. hot desert, it doesn't last very long.

  492. Why did Abraham give them so little?

  493. Well, perhaps as he was sending the

  494. child away that he loved, perhaps he

  495. hoped they wouldn't go far. They would

  496. find somewhere nearby.

  497. But they're in the desert. It didn't

  498. last long. And and it's all gone. And

  499. Hagar leaves the child under the shade

  500. of the bushes. Bear in mind, Ishmael is

  501. about 15 at this point. The term child

  502. or boy in in from that word there, it

  503. refers to one who is inexperienced. It

  504. can apply to anyone of any age. you are

  505. inexperienced at things. He's

  506. inexperienced

  507. at many things. And so she leaves him

  508. there under the shade and she goes and

  509. she weeps because her situation is

  510. absolutely hopeless, isn't there? The

  511. supplies have run out. She's got no one

  512. to come and help her. There's no refuge,

  513. no help, no real expectation or hope

  514. that things are going to change. It's

  515. just her, her boy, the son, and that's

  516. how it's going to end.

  517. It's a truly heartbreaking situation.

  518. And so she cries.

  519. I don't think this would be a silent

  520. quiet cry. This would be a out of

  521. control wailing kind of absolute loss

  522. cry.

  523. We're not told she cried out to God,

  524. but it appears her son did. Verse 17,

  525. God hears the voice of the boy. So,

  526. we're not told he prayed, but there

  527. seems to be some kind of some formal

  528. prayer, something that God hears. God

  529. hears the voice of the boy. And God

  530. again proves that he keeps his promises,

  531. that he is faithful. You see, when Hagar

  532. was last in in desperation in the

  533. desert, she'd run away because of the

  534. bad treatment she had received. And then

  535. she encountered the angel of the Lord.

  536. And he had promised her a son, Ishmael,

  537. whose name means God hears. And it is

  538. that son who now sits under the bus

  539. presumably feeling terrible that it's

  540. his actions that have led to this awful

  541. situation.

  542. And in that situation, maybe maybe

  543. Abraham had taught him how to pray.

  544. Maybe that's what he's doing under that

  545. bush, praying, and God hears his voice.

  546. God answers. Yes, their situation is

  547. very grave. But even in this desperate

  548. situation, God is still at work.

  549. And this time he acts in response to

  550. Ishmael's prayer. Never think that

  551. prayer is a waste of time.

  552. It is one of the ways by which God

  553. chooses to work.

  554. He chooses to work in answer to our

  555. prayer. Why does he choose to do that? I

  556. don't know. But that's the way he

  557. chooses to work. We pray, God answers.

  558. That's the way it works. We need to be a

  559. praying people.

  560. We need to be a praying church.

  561. God is fulfilling his promises in answer

  562. to Ishmael's prayer.

  563. So, as promised, as he promised Abraham

  564. back in Genesis 17:20, God planned to

    Genesis 17:20

  565. make Ishmael into a father of 12 princes

  566. and a great nation. And he reaffirms

  567. that promise to Hagar.

  568. Now, alongside the reassurance of

  569. promises restated and a future hope, we

  570. see there's also personal kindness of

  571. God to Hagar in the moment. He knows her

  572. name. Verse 17, he says, "What troubles

  573. you, Hagar?"

  574. It's a real comfort, isn't it, to

  575. remember that in the midst of our

  576. greatest hour of need, the Lord knows

  577. your name. The Lord knows you. How

  578. precious is that?

  579. You think everyone has let you down, but

  580. the Lord sees you. The Lord knows you.

  581. And he brings her reassurance. He says,

  582. "Fear not."

  583. Isn't that wonderful? That seems to be

  584. the way that God often starts a

  585. conversation.

  586. Says, "Fear not."

  587. Her heart, it was full of fear. Of

  588. course, it was. But despite how bad it

  589. looked, she didn't need to fear. For God

  590. had heard Ishmael's prayer. And he has

  591. got great plans for Ishmael. And it's

  592. not just plans for the future. God is

  593. there in the present. in her current

  594. struggle. He opens her eyes and there is

  595. a well. I don't know, maybe it was

  596. tucked behind a little rocky patch or

  597. tuft of something or other. She She just

  598. couldn't see it. It was there all the

  599. time. And I This happens to me all the

  600. time. I was looking for my water bottle

  601. the other day and it's always on these

  602. these these shelves that are pretty full

  603. of stuff. I went in there, I couldn't

  604. see this bottle. I was like, uh. and and

  605. actually it was just there right in

  606. front of my face. I just couldn't see

  607. it.

  608. And when we are out of options in our

  609. difficult situation, God is never out of

  610. options. When we can't see what to do,

  611. God knows exactly what to do.

  612. And God was going to stay with them.

  613. Verse 20, uh he was with the boy as the

  614. boy grew up into that free wild donkey

  615. of a man. God said he would be. And he

  616. gets good with the bow so he can defend

  617. himself. He can go out hunting. He gets

  618. given a wife. So in response to this

  619. homeless teenage boy's desperate cry for

  620. help, the whole situation is radically

  621. transformed from rejection and fear and

  622. death to reassurance, new hope, new

  623. blessing, real help

  624. in that very moment. To them it looked

  625. like this is the end. Don't know how we

  626. can get beyond this point. But God

  627. worked through that disaster

  628. to answer their prayers and fulfill his

  629. promises.

  630. Brothers and sisters, don't just weep in

  631. your desperation.

  632. Cry out to God

  633. for you. You do not know how God may be

  634. using this in your life, what the next

  635. steps are. You don't know. you can't see

  636. and that's okay because God does. He

  637. knows. He sees and he is faithful.

  638. So God works through the miraculous

  639. intervention. He works through our

  640. prayers and he works through providence.

  641. And that's our final point. He works

  642. through providence. Verse 22. At that

  643. time, we're not quite sure um how this

  644. next episode fits with what we've just

  645. described. the narrator has sort of

  646. zoomed out a bit, zoomed ahead a bit and

  647. tied up the loose ends with Ishmael's

  648. story. So, we see that God was faithful

  649. and that's it. He's taken care of. Uh,

  650. we do hear a little bit more about him

  651. later, but for now, we can we can we can

  652. assume, okay, Ishmael's okay, God has

  653. been faithful. He's he's taken care of.

  654. He's kept his promise. Now, we're back

  655. to Abraham at that time. And we're

  656. introduced to King Aimilec, whom we met

  657. last week, but also to the commander of

  658. Aimilec's army. Now, it's never happened

  659. to me.

  660. But if a king and an army commander come

  661. come visiting,

  662. you want the outcome to go well, don't

  663. you? Because you realize there's

  664. probably quite a lot at stake here.

  665. Despite Abraham's previous bad behavior,

  666. Aimilec recognizes that because God is

  667. with Abraham, he himself needs to be

  668. friends with Abraham, not enemies. He

  669. doesn't want to be going up against

  670. Abraham because that would be going up

  671. against God. So, he wants to make a

  672. peace pact. Remember, we suggested

  673. that's what he wanted to do. That's what

  674. was behind the desire to uh get married

  675. to Sarah. Uh probably politically

  676. motivated at least in part. But that

  677. didn't work out. And so he tries this

  678. more direct approach. And Abraham's

  679. happy to enter into this. Uh this is

  680. covenant number one. There was a peace

  681. treaty and they they enter into that

  682. together. But Abraham takes the

  683. opportunity to bring up a situation

  684. about a well.

  685. If it seems there's a a lot of to-do

  686. about wells in the Bible, well, remember

  687. how important water [snorts] is. If you

  688. had a well, you could keep your

  689. livestock alive. That was your riches,

  690. your your financial security, and your

  691. life really. And as we saw with Hagar, a

  692. well could mean the difference between

  693. your own life and your own death. So,

  694. you can't overstate just how important

  695. wells are in that particular setting.

  696. Now, whether or not the well we're

  697. talking about is the same one Hagar had

  698. her eyes open to, who knows? It would

  699. seem fitting. It would seem nice,

  700. wouldn't it? I don't know if that was

  701. but with such an important asset it's

  702. not surprising that friction or strife

  703. would arise over the use of it. And so

  704. Abraham confronts Aimilec about this.

  705. Apparently Aimilec's servants had seized

  706. it uh and and Abraham said, "Well, I dug

  707. it." And uh Aimilec denies any knowledge

  708. of the conflict. And so they agree to

  709. swear an oath or a covenant number two

  710. between them stating that this well was

  711. dug by Abraham and it belonged to him

  712. and the the region Beersa was named

  713. after the oath after the fact. Now, it's

  714. easy to miss this, but what's happening

  715. here is that God has so ordained

  716. circumstances

  717. that even this stressful dispute that

  718. has heightened political tensions and

  719. perhaps brought the slightest whiff of

  720. war onto the horizon.

  721. God has so ordained these things so that

  722. Abraham is able to peacefully gain a

  723. foothold into the land.

  724. This king and his army commander have

  725. agreed to recognize Abraham's rights and

  726. it's a small step for Abraham but a

  727. giant hint that God's promises to

  728. Abraham are being fulfilled. He has the

  729. son and now he has the rights to the

  730. well and so too presumably to the

  731. surrounding bits of land. And so this is

  732. all because aim desired peace and

  733. because of a dispute. God has

  734. providentially worked for Abraham's

  735. benefit in that situation. Through a

  736. difficult situation, God has been at

  737. work. And this is another way that God

  738. works.

  739. So one, he works through miraculous

  740. action. He does things that only God can

  741. do. For example, he works in people's

  742. hearts. He got you here, didn't he?

  743. That's a miracle. Don't think you're

  744. here by chance. God has been at work in

  745. your life. God does these things. He

  746. raises up nations. He makes things

  747. happen.

  748. God intervenes in the miraculous.

  749. Secondly, he inspires people to pray and

  750. then he works through our prayers. This

  751. is another way that God is pleased to do

  752. his will.

  753. Thirdly, he so organizes events and

  754. situations and circumstances that what

  755. he has promised and willed comes to

  756. pass.

  757. Now, to be fair, there is a falling out

  758. over this will uh well um in Isaac's

  759. time, but that's later. For now, Abraham

  760. can see God's promises are being

  761. wonderfully worked out right before him.

  762. And so, he decides to plant a tree as

  763. you do.

  764. Why a tree? It's not entirely clear.

  765. There's a couple of suggestions I'd like

  766. to make. It's a bit like staking your

  767. claim like when a country plants its

  768. flag somewhere and uh then says this bit

  769. belongs to us. Also, a tree provides

  770. much needed shade as we know from the

  771. summer we've had. Actually, in a hot

  772. climate, shade is invaluable, isn't it?

  773. which you would need. You need shade if

  774. a place a region is going to be

  775. inhabited for any length of time. And

  776. shade would be helpful for worship too.

  777. So this tree is the start of an

  778. establishment of a settlement. He is

  779. beginning to stake his claim on the

  780. land.

  781. So Abraham has much to be thankful for.

  782. He has the respect of the locals. He has

  783. peace with them. He finally has his son

  784. and heir and he's growing up. That

  785. constant cloud of shame that was over

  786. Sarah that's been lifted. God has given

  787. him asurances regarding his other son

  788. Ishmael. And so at the grand old age of

  789. 103, Abraham settles down for a bit. He

  790. continues that dayby-day walk with the

  791. Lord. A life of worship, of dependence,

  792. of obedience. God has proved faithful

  793. and God has done it.

  794. But

  795. the question on the horizon is the

  796. question that needs to be settled is

  797. having received so much blessing,

  798. will Abraham be obedient even if it

  799. means losing his most precious son. God

  800. has been faithful,

  801. but will Abraham?

  802. Well, we'll find out next week.

  803. Let's just be quiet before the Lord.

  804. Oh father, we we are so thankful

  805. that you are God,

  806. that you are good,

  807. that you are merciful and compassionate

  808. and abounding in love. Oh father, we are

  809. so thankful that even in the the depths

  810. of our difficulties,

  811. in the height of the storm, when things

  812. are happening and we don't understand,

  813. Lord, there is you and you are a refuge

  814. for us. We can run to you and find help.

  815. We can find someone who who understands

  816. perfectly

  817. in even when we do not understand, we do

  818. not see, we can see no way out. And yet

  819. there you are. And Lord, we thank you

  820. that even though you take us through the

  821. valley of death, Lord, we thank you that

  822. there is always life and hope and a way

  823. forward with you. Lord, we thank you.

  824. Lord, if we don't know you yet as our

  825. Lord and Savior, perhaps maybe this the

  826. time when we come to you for the first

  827. time and we find you to be our life and

  828. our hope. So Lord, we thank you for our

  829. time together. Help us to think upon

  830. these things in Jesus name.
