Come to Jesus - Justin McTeer

Let's pray.

Jesus, thank you so much that uh that we're all together this morning, Lord, and that you're in this place, Lord.

We can feel your presence and you're powerful, and and we love you, Lord.

And we're just here this morning to worship you and to hear from you, Father.

And Holy Spirit, we ask that you would just be in this place and that you would just speak to us whatever it is that you have for us.

Speak it right to our hearts this morning so that we can walk out these doors closer to you than when we walked in.

And we just thank you, Jesus, for everything you've done for us and for your love.

And we ask all this in your name.

Amen.

Well, hope everyone's having a great Memorial Day weekend so far.

Uh I am, so it's good.

Tomorrow's a day off, which is always awesome.

Hopefully everyone has tomorrow off, but if you don't, I didn't say that to make like to rub it in or anything like that.

So please don't take that.

But I wanted to start off by just saying that if if we've never had the chance of meeting, my name is Justin, and I have the awesome uh privilege of being able to work with all of our young people here at his hands.

I yeah.

We do.

We have and I'll just say to all the parents in the room, and this is just really sincere, thank you so much because you have amazing kids.

You really do, and it is an absolute joy to work with them every week, whether it's the high school group or the junior high or the young kids.

They're they're really amazing.

And I know that everyone else that that helps out you know with the youth teams feels the same way.

So I'll actually, you know what?

I'll just use this as an unashamed plug for the youth teams.

If you have ever thought about joining one of those and helping out with our young people here, you would you would love it.

You will have more uh hilarious, touching, encouraging, and humbling experiences than you've probably ever had in your life.

And most of those are rolled into one experience at once.

It's a lot of fun.

Um I'll give you an example actually.

Uh a few months ago, I was trying to grow a beard.

And uh trying being the the key word, I've learned there's a big difference between growing a beard and trying to grow a beard, and I was trying to grow a beard.

Uh and the reason was is I found out I was gonna be a dad, and let's just face it, beards are manly.

They just are.

And if you look around this morning and you see someone with a beard, congratulate them, because it's just a there's something about that.

It's just a it's awesome.

And uh so I decided I wanted a beard.

I was gonna be a dad, and I just felt I don't feel very dad-like a lot of times, and so I felt like if I had a beard, maybe it would help me kind of get into dad mode.

And uh so I went about two months and I didn't shave.

And for the first three weeks I got made fun of a lot, got a lot of laughs, but you know, after a couple months, I really started to feel like I had you know a pretty decent beard coming in, and I was I was pretty proud of it.

And and then one morning on a Sunday in his kids, one of our second or third grade boys came up to me into one of those experiences I was talking about that are touching and encouraging, and and they said, Mr.

Justin, we drew you a picture, and here it is, and they handed me the picture, and I was so touched, you know, and it was a picture of me, and I'd gotten slime that morning, so I was sitting on the on the slime machine that we have in his kids, and and I looked at it, and then I looked a little closer.

Yeah, there it is.

It's a great picture.

But then I looked at my face in the picture, especially like around my mouth, and you can see behind me.

Mind you, I hadn't shaved in two months, and in the eyes, in the eyes of a of a very honest second or third grade boy, um, random sparsely placed black dots were my beard, you know.

Not lines, not scribbles, you know, he didn't like do that, just five or six dots around my mouth.

So, you know.

So I shaved the next day, but that's just an example, just to say that you know, in one moment it's touching, it's funny, it's encouraging, and very humbling.

And that's what we get when we get to work with kids.

And I think that a part of the reason that I've that I appreciate that so much, especially in these last few months, is that is that my wife and I had our first son two months ago.

And yeah, it's exciting.

So I'll just introduce you to him.

His name is Liam, and he is uh he's awesome.

He's uh look at that.

That's a handsome boy.

I'm just saying.

I'm giving the credit to my wife, but I mean, come on.

Um and uh and this morning I wanted to share for just a little bit uh some of the experiences we've had in the last few months and some of the things that it has reminded me about Jesus and about our relationship with him.

And and I guess before I get into any of it, I just want to say a huge thank you from on behalf of my wife and I and our family for all the prayers.

I know a lot of you knew what was going on, and I'm sure a lot of parents in this room have had the experience where you have a child and there's complications and you have kind of a rough start, and you know what that feels like.

But uh but Steve shared that with you guys on a Sunday morning, and so many of you were praying.

And I just want to let you know that that meant the world, and still does mean the world to Megan and I, and that God heard your prayers and that he answered those prayers in some really cool ways.

And so just thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

And this morning I want to share that experience, and I'll just I guess I'll start from the beginning so we're all on the same page, but we'll rewind to April 5th, 2010.

April 5th was a very, very special day for me because it was the NCAA basketball national game, like national championship game.

And uh, if you know me, I'm a I'm a massive Duke basketball fan.

One of those just in annoyingly, I mean, I've gone to Duke and painted my body blue before, no joke.

I mean, I'm one of those guys.

I watch every game that's on TV, and you know, unless I mean it's one of those situations where if you're a really close friend of mine and you call me during a Duke game and you say you have a flat tire and no one else will come help you, I'll just be like, well, there's 13 minutes left in the game, and as soon as it's over, as long as Duke wins and I'm in an okay mood, I will be there for you.

You know, I'm like one of those one of those guys.

And so, you know, I'm excited.

It's April 5th, national championship game.

My whole day is built around this.

Duke hasn't played in the national championship since 2001 when I was a junior in high school.

So, I mean, I'm like, this is this is it.

You know, this is like the holy grail of my my sports fandom.

And uh so we we get to to this place that we're gonna watch the game, and about halfway through the game, I realized that my son is also an incredible Duke fan, so much so that he decided he wanted to see the rest of the game.

And so at halftime, Megan went into labor.

And uh, you know, it was perfect timing.

A lot of my friends joked that that would be the only thing on earth that could make me leave that game, and uh, and I did.

So my priorities were in line.

I'd be lying if if I didn't tell you that one of the first thoughts that popped through my head, though, when Megan said my water broke was do we have two hours or do we need to go there now?

You know, whatever.

But I held my tongue.

I held my tongue.

And so, 24 hours later, on April 6th, Liam was born, and that was him right after.

I'm not choking him in that picture.

I do want to say that.

I just, I had never held a baby before, and so when they handed him to me, I was just kind of like, you know, what do you do?

But uh, but man, it was awesome.

You know, that picture was actually the first moment he opened his eyes, and we got it on a on camera, and I know you know, parents, you guys all know about this, and I heard about it a lot before I had kids.

My mom would say it, and you always just sort of shake your head and go, I know, I know, that when you see your child for the first time and they look at you, it just opens up some part of your heart that is like never existed before.

And and I definitely had that experience.

And so, you know, we had Liam, he was born, they did the little tests, they took him away, he cried, and they cleaned him up and they gave him to us, and everything was great.

He was healthy, everything was wonderful.

We took him to the room that we kept him in the first night, and just tried to figure as much out as we could, and we hit that nurse button a lot, and it was awesome.

But then on the second day, we started to have some problems, and some problems that were actually pretty scary.

Um, we we he started to have these spells where he would turn blue because he wouldn't breathe.

He would stop breathing for an extended period of time, and all the blood would drain from his face, and he would just he would be totally blue.

And it happened once, and the nurse said, Oh, you know, maybe he had some, you know, something caught in his throat.

That happened sometimes, but then about an hour later it happened again and then again, and it actually happened about four times in the course of a three out three to four hour period of time, and we started to get pretty freaked out because we were supposed to uh we were supposed to take him home that day, and this was going on, and we're like, look, you know, that we're really freaked out about this.

You know, what are what are we gonna do about this?

And so they talked to the doctors, and they actually decided to admit Liam into the newborn intensive care unit.

Uh and so I walked with him down the hallway.

They had him in the little, you know, I don't know what to call it, the little baby fortress with all the wires and the hooks and the gizmos.

And you know, it was hard to look at him hooked up to all the monitors and and everything, all the IVs.

I mean, he had wires going to him, you know, like you wouldn't believe.

And and we were in the NICU for a long time.

They didn't realize what was going on, they weren't sure.

At first they thought it was an infection, and so they they took a blood culture, you know, they gave him antibiotics, they did that whole thing, and you know, come to find out he didn't have an infection.

And so then they started running more tests.

It was it was literally I joke around, but it was like an episode of House.

You know, if you ever watched that show where, you know, it's just one possible diagnosis after another.

And this was going on for days.

I mean, for days and days.

There was, they'd come in and they'd say, hey, here's what we think's going on, and then they test it and it wouldn't be what it was.

And then they'd say, hey, what if what if it's this?

And they'd do some more tests and it wouldn't be that.

And this just kept happening, and it was like one diagnosis after another, and and they kept getting progressively more serious.

So after a few days, they thought that that he had potentially a really serious heart condition.

And so they're explaining that to us, and and and Megan's doing great through this whole time.

You know, Megan is uh Megan's keeping her spirits up, she's you know, she's staying positive, and and I'm not.

You know, because what Megan would do is the doctors would come in and they would say a term and tell us what may be going on, and and she would pray about it.

And and I would hear what was going on, and I would get on WebMD and look up some term I didn't know, and I would freak myself out.

And and I kept doing this, and I actually I actually started to get really down and just definitely not full of faith that God was going to uh to help my son.

You know, I I believed that he could and I wanted to, but just every time the doctors would come into the room and say, hey, here's what we think it is now, or what if it's this, and it just got more and more serious, my spirit would sink, and I just had a hard time having confidence that he was going to be okay.

And everything sort of came to a head about six days after we had been in the NICU.

They had kind of decided that they were pretty certain it was a brain-related issue because all of his symptoms, his breathing, and he had some other symptoms going on were central nervous system related.

And they came up to us, they had done an EEG a few days earlier, which is like an electronic reading of the brain, and I don't understand how it all works.

But but from the EEG they found out and told us that he was having seizures.

And so the seizures, in conjunction with the other symptoms that he was having, led them to believe that at some point in time in the womb he had suffered some type of trauma that had done damage to his brain.

And when he was born, his umbilical cord was wrapped around his neck four times.

And they didn't realize that his umbilical cord was around his neck, so they delivered him normally.

And so they thought that there was a potential that maybe the cord had cut blood flow off to his brain.

And so what we were looking at was serious brain damage.

And that was probably at the time the worst fear that I had.

Every time I had gone on WebMD and looked at potential, you know, diagnosis from the terms they were giving me, even though I have no training in that and shouldn't have been doing it, there were lots of mentions of brain damage and some of the effects that that can have for the rest of a child's life.

And I'd sort of freaked myself out about that.

And so when the doctor was in our room and she was saying, here's what we think is happening, and she was talking about this potential brain damage, my heart sank probably to an all-time low in my entire life.

And the doctor looked at us and she said, We need to take Liam right away and we need to do an MRI.

We need to take an image of his brain and see, you know, what the damage is or if there's damage there.

And you could just tell, you could just tell from her facial expression and from the tone of her voice.

We had talked to her a number of times over several days and kind of gotten to know her a little bit, and you could just tell that she was not expecting a good result.

You could just tell.

And Megan and I were just dead silent.

There was definitely this sort of just heaviness in the air, and and I went to the waiting room where there was no one around when they took Liam away, and I just broke down like I have never broken down in my life.

I mean, I cried like I don't think I've ever cried like that before.

And it started out as crying and then it turned into crying and praying, but it wasn't this kind of, you know, really positive, faith-filled declaring that Jesus was going to do something about it.

It was this desperate, just begging God to help.

And it was strange because I knew in my head that I didn't need to beg God.

He's our Father, He loves us.

I know He loves me, and I don't have to beg for things, but and I'm sure parents, I'm sure you've been there before, so I can't wait till He gets a car and drives at 16, and I'll probably do this every day.

But it was just this it was just this like absolute desperation that there was there was nothing I could do.

I had no power.

I I was more powerless than I have ever felt in my life.

There was not one thing I could do to directly influence how the situation turned out.

The only thing I could do was pray, and so I did, but even my prayer just seemed like a shot in the dark.

It was just like I had nothing, basically.

I had nothing to give.

No faith, no, you know, just just God, here's what I have, just tears and desperation, and please have compassion and heal my son.

I felt a lot like a father who we see interact with Jesus in the Bible.

There's a story of this man that brings his son to Jesus in Mark chapter 9.

And it's a really, really interesting interaction that he has with Jesus.

And it starts in Mark 9, verse 14.

And I'll start there.

It's kind of a long story, but it's it's really incredible.

So here's what it says It says, When they returned to the other disciples, they saw a large crowd surrounding them.

And some teachers of religious law were arguing with them.

When the crowd saw Jesus, they were overwhelmed with awe.

They ran to greet him.

What is all this arguing about?

Jesus asked.

One of the men in the crowd spoke up and said, Teacher, I brought my son so you could heal him.

He is possessed by an evil spirit that won't let him talk.

And whenever the spirit seizes him, it throws him violently to the ground.

Then he foams at the mouth and grinds his teeth and becomes rigid.

So I asked your disciples to cast out the evil spirit, but they couldn't do it.

And Jesus said to them, You faithless people, how long must I be with you?

How long must I put up with you?

Bring the boy to me.

He's a little frustrated that his disciples didn't have the faith after seeing him do all these miracles to help him out.

And so it says they brought the boy to Jesus, but when the evil spirit saw Jesus, it threw the child into a violent convulsion, and he fell to the ground, writhing and foaming at the mouth.

How long has this been happening?

Jesus asked the boy's father.

He replied, Since he was a little boy.

The spirit often throws him into the fire or into water, trying to kill him.

Have mercy on us and help us if you can.

What do you mean, if I can?

Jesus asked.

Anything is possible if a person believes.

And the father instantly cried out, I do believe, but help me overcome my unbelief.

When Jesus saw that the crowd of onlookers was growing, he rebuked the evil spirit.

Listen, you spirit that makes this boy unable to hear and speak, he said, I command you to come out of this child and never enter him again.

And then the spirit screamed and threw the boy into another violent convulsion and left him.

The boy appeared to be dead.

A murmur ran through the crowd as people said he's dead, but Jesus took him by the hand and helped him to his feet, and he stood up.

So Jesus has this encounter with a father who has a son that has a serious problem.

And the father is really honest with Jesus.

He comes to Jesus probably because he had heard that Jesus healed people.

The Bible says that hundreds of people follow Jesus everywhere he went because they heard that he could heal the sick.

So this father brings his son to Jesus and he tells Jesus, help us if you can.

And Jesus says, Of course I can.

I can.

I'm Jesus.

I can do this.

You know, you need to believe.

And then the man says, I do believe.

But I don't.

I do believe, but help me overcome my unbelief.

And I think we can all relate to what it feels like to believe in God, but not at the same time.

And how conflicting that can feel.

And that's where this man was.

And so he brings his son to Jesus.

He's not necessarily confident that Jesus can A actually do anything, or B, that Jesus will do something, but he brings him to Jesus anyway, and his son ends up being healed.

And this is such an interesting interaction that Jesus has with this man because it's very different than some of the other interactions that Jesus has with people who he heals or people who he interacts with, you know, doing miracles.

It's very different.

For example, there's a famous story in Luke chapter 7 of a man who was a Roman officer who brought uh who came to Jesus because he had a servant who was very, very ill.

And he was coming to Jesus for Jesus to heal his servant.

And so he shows up, comes to Jesus, explains the situation, and Jesus says, All right, take me to him and I'll heal him.

And the man says, No, no, no.

You're so powerful that you don't even need to be in his presence.

You can just say the words, he is healed, and he'll be healed.

Sort of like a long-distance miracle.

And in Luke 7, 9 and 10, it says, when Jesus heard this, he was amazed at him.

Turning to the crowd following him, he said, I tell you, I have not found such great faith, even in Israel.

Then the men who had been sent returned to the house and found the servant well.

This man comes to Jesus and he is full of faith.

He is so confident that Jesus is capable of healing his servant that he tells Jesus, You don't even need to be in his presence, you just say the words.

That's all you need to do.

That's how powerful you are.

And it's crazy because he amazes Jesus.

Just the thought of being able to amaze God Himself.

His faith amazes Jesus.

There's a woman in Mark chapter 5, verses 26 through 28, who's been sick for years.

Mark 5:26–28

She comes to Jesus, she's been sick for years.

It says that she had suffered a great deal from many doctors, and over the years she had spent everything she had to pay to pay them, but she had gotten no better.

In fact, she had gotten worse.

She had heard about Jesus, so she came up behind him through the crowd and touched his robe.

For she thought to herself, if I can just touch his robe, I will be healed.

And she is.

She touches his garment and she's instantly healed, and Jesus stops and he says to his disciples, You know, I felt I felt healing power leave me.

Who touched me?

Someone touched me.

And she says it was her, and he says, Your faith has healed you.

Here we have this woman that has so much faith in Jesus that she thinks to herself, I don't even need to talk to him.

He doesn't even need to do his normal lay his hands on me or say anything to me.

If I can just touch a piece of his clothing, I'll be healed.

And that's this extreme faith, this incredible confidence in Jesus.

And there are a lot of other people that we meet in the Bible like this, people that have this incredible faith.

But the father who brought his son to Jesus, he doesn't have that kind of faith.

He doesn't have that kind of confidence.

He didn't come to Jesus saying, if I can just get to Jesus and bring my boy to him, I know he's gonna be okay.

He thought, if I can just get to Jesus, maybe.

Maybe he tried everything else, maybe he the child had seen doctors, maybe the child had been prayed over before.

I mean, I'm sure he had tried a lot of things, and he just says, Why not?

And at first glance, this man does not have very much in common with the Roman officer who had so much faith in Jesus that he said, you can just say the words.

It doesn't seem like he has a lot in common with the woman in Mark 5 who says, if I can just touch a piece of Jesus' clothing, I'll be healed.

Compared to those two, he seems like he's in another league.

You know, he's just not quite there yet.

But the result was the same.

Jesus still healed his son.

And even though he didn't come to Jesus with confidence, and even though he didn't come to Jesus full of this amazing faith, he actually does have a lot in common with the woman and the Roman officer.

He actually has something very important in common with both of them, and that is this really simple thing.

That he had a problem and he came to Jesus to solve it.

He had a problem and he came to Jesus.

The Roman officer came to Jesus.

He came with a lot of faith, he came with a lot of confidence, but he came to Jesus.

And the woman, she had a lot of faith.

She had a lot of confidence, but she still came to Jesus.

And this man came to Jesus too.

And Jesus helped him.

And what we see from that is that it's not as important all the time in terms of how we come to Jesus.

Sometimes we feel like if Jesus is going to do something in our lives, we have to come to him with this incredible, you know, unshakable faith.

And Jesus tells us here that the most important thing is not how we.

Come to him.

But the most important thing is that we come to him.

Whether it's it's full of faith and confidence or whether it's full of doubt and fear, it doesn't matter if we come to him with what we have, he can take that and give us what we need.

You know, in the hospital, when I was praying in that waiting room, I did not have this great faith that God was going to do something.

I prayed out of desperation because it was all I had.

An hour later, they brought Liam back to us, and uh, and the doctor told us that the MRI had come back and that there was absolutely nothing wrong with his brain.

And since that time, that was about six weeks ago, he's never had another breathing episode.

Every doctor's appointment we've had has been totally healthy.

Every nurse that's come to visit us has said that he looks like a totally perfect baby.

There's no, yeah.

And the strange thing is, and I share your joy, I mean, I'm I'm I'm excited too.

And even though I believe that Jesus, I believe Jesus has healed my son.

I do.

And I choose to believe that Jesus has healed my son, I can't say with 100% certainty that I totally know 100% that Jesus has healed my son.

You know, we're still waiting on a lot of tests to come back.

Uh when it whenever they told us there's nothing wrong with his brain, it was like, yes, and then they're like, but, you know, another, it's like an episode of house.

They're like, but it could be this and this and this and this, and we're gonna do 60 tests and send them off, and it's gonna be weeks before we get the results.

And so we're still waiting on results from tests to find out if he has some type of obscure condition.

So I can't say with 100% certainty, and I can't act like I have this totally unshakable faith.

I still have doubts.

There are still times in the back of my mind or even the front of my mind where I wonder, oh, what if there's a test that's gonna come back and it's gonna have something really bad?

Now I'm choosing to believe, and I and I do believe, that God has healed my son, but my point, I guess, is that if a test result comes back and he has some condition, then I'm gonna do the same thing I did before.

I'm gonna go to Jesus and I'm gonna ask him for help.

Because while I don't know 110% that Jesus changed his brain or something like that, I do know with with 100% certainty that I was in a waiting room and I was crying and praying and I was broken and I was absolutely more desperate than I've ever felt in my entire life.

And then an hour later, I had more peace and more encouragement than I have felt in a long time.

I do know that.

I do know that my heart was changed.

And that and that that while I believe that God healed my son, I know, I know that he healed my heart at that moment.

I know that he took a broken heart and a heart full of fear, and I know he helped.

I know that.

It was almost a perfect picture of Philippians 4, 6 and 7.

It says, Don't worry about anything.

Instead, pray about everything.

Tell God what you need and thank him for all he has done, and then you will experience God's peace, which exceeds anything we can understand.

His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.

You know, like that father.

And like the woman and the Roman officer, when we have something going on in our lives, we go to Jesus.

We come to him.

Because he has what we need.

And I know that in this room, some of us have had experiences very similar to the one I had with my son, but the result was different.

And it's hard when we suffer loss, and it's hard when we go through those experiences where we've we've cried out to God and the prayer wasn't answered the way that we we wanted it to be.

But even in those moments, we come to Jesus and He gives us peace, and He gives our heart the encouragement that it needs so that we can keep going.

And it doesn't have to be a situation that's that grave, it can be anything.

It's our finances.

We can't find a job, we go to Jesus.

Our marriage is in trouble.

And even if we believe in our minds and hearts that it's over, it's never gonna get any better, we go to Jesus.

Because there's nothing he can't do.

He said that.

I'm I can do this.

I'm Jesus.

If it's a relationship that's broken, it doesn't matter what the situation is money, finances, just friends, relationships, work, you name it, we go to Jesus.

And what we learn from that father is that we don't have to go through all these hoops.

You know, we don't have to jump through hoops, we don't have to go through some ritual to go to Jesus and have our prayer or our need be acceptable to him.

He didn't turn this man away because he didn't have a lot of faith.

He healed his son.

And in a way, he answered that man's prayer too.

The man prayed, help my unbelief, and I'm guessing that his unbelief was helped.

He gave that man what he needed just as much as he gave the son what was needed.

We go to Jesus.

No matter the condition of our heart, no matter where we're at, we just go to him.

If the worship team would come up so we can we can wrap up.

One of the amazing things about Jesus when he walked the earth was how available and approachable he was.

You know, people didn't have to jump through hoops, like I said, to get to Jesus.

We don't have any record of someone coming up to Jesus with a need and someone stopping them and saying, I'm sorry, Jesus' month is a little full right now.

Come back next month and we'll see if we can fit you in.

I mean, people just came to Jesus and they had direct access to him.

And that's kind of strange for our culture because most of the time, someone that is very important and has a lot of things to do, they're not available all the time.

And they're not approachable, and that makes sense.

I mean, it's hard to get to people like that because they have a lot of stuff they gotta focus on, and they just can't have people coming to them all the time.

But Jesus is different.

People went directly to him and directly interacted with him, and he gave them what they needed right from him.

They went to Jesus, and we have the same Jesus.

It is no different than when he walked the earth.

In fact, it's it's better for us because it doesn't matter where we're at, we go to Jesus.

Hebrews 4, 14 through 16 says, now that we know what we have, Jesus, this great high priest with ready access to God, let's not let it slip through our fingers.

We don't have a priest who is out of touch with our reality.

He's been through our weakness and testing, experienced it all, all but the sin.

So let's walk right up to him and get what he is so ready to give.

Take the mercy, accept the help.

We have direct access to the God of the universe through Jesus.

We come to him exactly as we are, whether it's full of faith or whether it's with less faith than we've ever had, it doesn't matter.

We just go to Jesus and we get what he is ready to give.

We accept his help.

We take his mercy, we take the peace that he offers us.

And we know that whether we've been following Jesus for 25 years and we go to him all the time, or whether we've never gone to Jesus before because we're just not sure where we stand with him, none of that matters.

We don't have to be in a certain place to go to Jesus.

We go to Jesus wherever we are.

And like I said, we we get what he is ready to give.

We get the mercy, we get the help, we get Jesus.

And he is what we need.

So let's pray together this morning and go to him and tell him what we need.

Jesus, thank you so much that you make yourself readily available to us.

All of us, all of us in this room have needs, God.

All of us have problems, all of us have things that we need help with.

And Lord, we just ask this morning that you would let us just go to you.

No matter what the state of our mind is, or our heart, or no matter how much confidence we have in you, or how little, that we would still go to you with whatever we have, and that you would help us and you would give us what we need.
