  1. This morning we're going to learn about unbelief, which is something Pastor talked a little bit about this morning in his message.

  2. ! If I could have five volunteers this morning to read a passage of scripture. Darren, Psalm 3415.

  3. Jared, Psalm 2714. Joe, Psalm 119, 51. James, Hebrews 11, 6. Sorry, I'm out of Psalms.

  4. Anybody want to do one more? Matt, Joshua 23, 14. So you have to have your thumb on that one for a long time.

  5. It's all the way at the end. What's that? 3415. Okay? All right. So Mark chapter 5. Look at verse number 22, please.

    Mark 5 chapter mention

  6. And behold, there cometh one of the rulers of the synagogue, Jairus by name. And when he saw him, he fell at his feet.

  7. And besought him greatly, saying, My little daughter lieth at the point of death. I pray thee, come and lay hands on her, that she may be healed, and she shall live.

  8. Verse 24, And Jesus went with him, and much people followed him and thronged him.

  9. Let's pray. Heavenly Father, we're just grateful for our day. Lord, thank you for bringing us all together in this place.

  10. Just thank you, Father, for all that are here. Lord, I just pray that this message this morning would speak to us, Lord.

  11. That we would have a good time worshiping you, and pray this in Jesus' name. Amen.

  12. So our last couple of lessons, we saw Peter, and as he learned about the Lord, was at the Sea of Galilee.

  13. Today, we're in Capernaum. And here, we'll learn, along with a man named Jairus, a lesson in unbelief.

  14. So John Wooden once said, Repetition is the key to learning. And we see this in Peter's life, don't we?

  15. I mean, I see it in my life, I guess, too, right?

  16. In our last lesson, we watched as Peter learned that trust and obedience are foundational to becoming the disciple of Jesus.

  17. But Peter had not mastered the concept from just one experience.

  18. In fact, we see interwoven through every succeeding lesson of this Sunday school lesson, the importance of trusting and obeying.

  19. So good teachers understand, just as Jesus did, that continual reinforcement of learning is vital.

  20. I mean, how many times have you told your kids to clean their room, pick up their socks?

  21. It's like, right?

  22. Because we have to learn, we have to be told over and over.

  23. I like to say that maybe we should all be grateful that the Lord is patient with all of us in this area, right?

  24. But when it comes to trusting the Lord, we more easily doubt than we trust, don't we?

  25. I do. I more easily doubt than trust when it comes to that area.

  26. Why do you suppose that is?

  27. I think, what's that?

  28. Why is it easier?

  29. I think it's because the doubt gives us a false feeling of control.

  30. That's what I think.

  31. I'm in charge.

  32. And not only that, I want to be in charge, right?

  33. I want to be able to take the credit for the way things turn out.

  34. So if I'm in charge then, and it turns out good, I get the credit.

  35. Okay, I'll be alone on that one.

  36. But that's just the way I am in my life.

  37. I want the credit, and so I doubt.

  38. And I want to be in charge, and so I doubt.

  39. With God's help, however, we can leave doubting behind and walk forward in faith.

  40. Three times in the New Testament, the Bible tells us,

  41. the just shall live by faith.

  42. So since this is a Bible teaching class, we're now going to have a pop quiz.

  43. Who can tell me one of the three times?

  44. One of the three times, the New Testament says,

  45. the just shall live by faith.

  46. Three verses.

  47. Oh, look, we have prizes.

  48. Pop quiz.

  49. Romans what?

  50. Who said that?

  51. Oh, look at that.

  52. Hey, Romans 1.17.

  53. For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith,

  54. as it is written, the just shall live by faith.

  55. There's two left.

  56. David.

  57. What's that?

  58. Hebrews 10.35.

  59. 35?

  60. 38.

  61. Best ones for last.

  62. Nice job.

  63. That's the one I would have picked for sure.

  64. Well, I certainly need the steps, that's for sure.

  65. Okay, Galatians 3.11.

  66. But that no man is justified by the law on the side of God,

  67. it is evident for the just shall live by faith.

  68. So as we continue in our discipleship education,

  69. we will see Peter learn once again that nothing is too hard for God

  70. through the sad situation.

  71. Look at verse number 22.

  72. Behold, there cometh one of the rulers of the synagogue,

  73. Jairus by name.

  74. And when he saw him, he fell at his feet,

  75. and besought him greatly, saying,

  76. My little daughter lieth at the point of death.

  77. I pray thee, come and lay thy hands on her,

  78. that she may be healed, and she shall live.

  79. So when sin entered the world, Genesis 3,

  80. paradise was departed.

  81. And out of that, we now have to learn how to deal with death.

  82. And it's one of the hardest struggles that we have in life,

  83. learning to deal with the death,

  84. especially of a loved one, and especially of a child.

  85. In this lesson, we'll meet a man named Jairus

  86. who is facing the terminal illness of his child.

  87. And undoubtedly, he would have done what any parent would have done.

  88. Spared no expense to try to heal this child.

  89. Called every doctor.

  90. Done everything he could think of.

  91. However, nothing seemed to have worked for him.

  92. And barring a miracle, he knew that his daughter was going to die.

  93. I think this father was definitely anguished.

  94. Concerned.

  95. Fully aware that the only hope that he could possibly have for his daughter was Jesus.

  96. And that, he cast himself at the Savior's feet.

  97. And we see the father's plea in verse number 23.

  98. Besought him greatly, saying,

  99. My little daughter lieth at the point of death.

  100. I pray thee, come and lay thy hands on her,

  101. that she may be healed, and she shall live.

  102. You know, Jairus, a ruler of the synagogue.

  103. Okay?

  104. Very high in position in society.

  105. Interesting, though, his power and his wealth

  106. were of no use to him in this situation.

  107. At this moment, he only had one thought in mind.

  108. If he could just get to Jesus, his daughter might be healed.

  109. And when he saw the man, think about this.

  110. This man, great power and authority,

  111. threw himself at the feet of Jesus.

  112. As a matter of fact, the Bible says,

  113. Besought him greatly.

  114. This is a very impassioned plea for help.

  115. And he knew that the Lord was the only one

  116. who could heal his daughter.

  117. You know, I think sometimes that the way we ask for help

  118. dictates the kind of help we get.

  119. Right?

  120. If I were to come up to John and say,

  121. Hey, John.

  122. Did you know the basement's on fire?

  123. What do you suppose John's reaction would be?

  124. Oh, fire.

  125. Yeah, it's a big fire, a little fire.

  126. Right?

  127. But it's a fire.

  128. John, the basement's on fire.

  129. John's going to run up, jump up, and run downstairs

  130. and look and see if it's on fire.

  131. So the way we ask dictates the response we get, doesn't it?

  132. What does the Bible say about that?

  133. When we pray, how do we ask of the Lord?

  134. Are we urgent when we ask him?

  135. James 5, verse 16.

    James 5:16

  136. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.

  137. Elias was a man subject to like passion as we,

  138. and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain,

  139. and guess what?

  140. It rained not on the earth by the space of three years and six months.

  141. And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain,

  142. and the earth brought forth her fruit.

  143. In these verses on prayer, James recounts a passage of 1 Kings 17,

  144. where Elijah prayed earnestly that it might not rain

  145. to show power to an unbelieving king.

  146. When we pray, are we urgent?

  147. Are we fervent?

  148. Because if we are, God will take notice.

  149. Psalm 34, 15.

  150. Recorded throughout Scripture are stories of fervent petition.

  151. Hannah, 1 Samuel.

  152. One of my favorite passages of a fervent prayer.

  153. Earnestly prayed and wept before the Lord for a child to her God

  154. granted her request.

  155. David fasted and prayed all night,

  156. asking the Lord to spare his child in 2 Samuel 12.

  157. That child wasn't spared, was he?

  158. But I believe that prayer was still answered.

  159. And in the parable of the widow and the unjust judge,

  160. the widow received her request simply because of her persistence in Luke 18.

  161. Christ showed us the ultimate example of fervent prayer in the garden,

  162. right before his crucifixion.

  163. When we fervently pray, the Lord hears us,

  164. just as Jesus heard Jairus' desperate request for help.

  165. So as Christ traveled to his house,

  166. Peter and the rest of the disciples followed along,

  167. but an uninspected delay stopped him.

  168. And I wonder how Jairus felt.

  169. Jesus, come save my daughter.

  170. Okay, let's go.

  171. What happened?

  172. Nope.

  173. Roadblock.

  174. How do you suppose Jairus felt?

  175. How would we feel?

  176. So the daughter's plight was in jeopardy.

  177. And Jairus had hope.

  178. That's why he went to the Lord.

  179. Jesus was coming.

  180. Jairus believed his daughter could be healed.

  181. But Jesus was stopped.

  182. Out of the throng accompanying him,

  183. we all know that a desperate woman,

  184. plagued by this issue of blood that she had,

  185. touched the Lord for healing.

  186. Like the dying girl, the doctors could not help her either.

  187. Jesus, in his compassion,

  188. saw her faith and healed her.

  189. But this delay, this stop was fatal, wasn't it?

  190. A messenger at that time came from the house and said,

  191. hey, it's too late.

  192. Why bother the master any longer?

  193. Your daughter's dead.

  194. You know, at the beginning of the story,

  195. Matthew records the father telling Jesus,

  196. telling that his daughter was even dead in Matthew 9.

  197. While Mark said she was at the point of death,

  198. Luke said she was dying.

  199. However it was,

  200. Jairus was expecting her death.

  201. And knew that,

  202. the father knew that she could die by the time

  203. that he had reached Jesus.

  204. And where doctors could no longer help,

  205. where medication could no longer cure,

  206. Jairus knew there was only one

  207. who could prevail in this situation.

  208. His name was Jesus.

  209. Come, lay thy hand upon her, he says.

  210. She shall live.

  211. At this moment,

  212. Jesus was the last resort.

  213. Jesus was the only resort.

  214. And even though Jairus began with great faith,

  215. Jesus knew the delay

  216. and the report that his daughter had actually died

  217. could probably undermine that faith.

  218. That seems kind of risky.

  219. But Jesus always is an encourager.

  220. What does he say in verse number 36?

  221. As soon as Jesus heard the word that was spoken,

  222. he saith unto the ruler of the synagogue,

  223. Be not afraid,

  224. only believe.

  225. That was his encouragement.

  226. So what was Jairus afraid of?

  227. Why would Jesus say,

  228. Be not afraid,

  229. only believe?

  230. What was the fear?

  231. Yeah,

  232. for his daughter was going to die.

  233. Anything else?

  234. Maybe that Jesus wouldn't heal her.

  235. Maybe that Jesus wasn't real.

  236. Aren't those fears we have sometimes

  237. when we go to God

  238. and ask these things?

  239. That Jesus won't act

  240. the way we want him to act?

  241. What does Jesus say?

  242. Be not afraid,

  243. only believe.

  244. But that can't work for us

  245. unless we take our problems to him.

  246. Can it?

  247. Unless we go to Jesus with these things.

  248. Jesus can't work on them.

  249. Jairus took his problem to the Lord

  250. and we can too.

  251. 1 Peter 5, 7,

  252. Casting all your care upon him

  253. for he careth for you.

  254. Psalm 27, 14.

  255. It looked hopeless, didn't it?

  256. And the Bible doesn't say,

  257. but maybe the disciples

  258. thought it was hopeless also.

  259. I think there was some doubt

  260. in the crowd at this point.

  261. And while everybody knew

  262. that Jesus could work miracles,

  263. the girl had already died.

  264. I think that Jesus, however,

  265. wanted this opportunity

  266. so he could demonstrate to everyone

  267. his power could break

  268. even death's grip

  269. in spite of the scornful spectators.

  270. Verse number 40.

  271. And they laughed him to scorn,

  272. but when he had put them all out,

  273. he taketh the father

  274. and the mother of the damsel

  275. and them that were with him

  276. and entereth where the damsel was lying.

  277. By the time Jairus had reached his home,

  278. a crowd had already assembled.

  279. You know, and maybe some of them

  280. were genuinely grieving,

  281. friends and family.

  282. Obviously, some could have been curious.

  283. Back in Matthew,

  284. there was minstrels there,

  285. professional mourners even.

  286. But one thing's clear.

  287. Of all the people that were there,

  288. they all doubted Jesus' ability

  289. to raise this girl from the dead.

  290. The Lord had an assertion, however,

  291. in verse number 39.

  292. And when he was come in,

  293. he saith unto them,

  294. Why make ye this ado?

  295. And weep.

  296. The damsel is not dead,

  297. but sleepeth.

  298. When Jesus arrived,

  299. he told the mourners

  300. the young girl was not dead.

  301. She's just sleeping.

  302. Looking at the harmony of the Gospels,

  303. we see three accounts of this statement,

  304. all of which use the exact same wording.

  305. They laughed him to scorn.

  306. Why would Jesus say this?

  307. How could he know?

  308. He was just now arriving on the scene.

  309. He couldn't possibly have known

  310. all of the things

  311. that have gone on before.

  312. And he says this crazy thing.

  313. She's not dead.

  314. She's asleep.

  315. Surely, this guy Jesus

  316. had no idea what he was talking about.

  317. But Jesus says,

  318. Be not afraid.

  319. Only believe.

  320. While we may not laugh

  321. as the mourners did

  322. at the statement that Jesus made,

  323. I think sometimes

  324. we actually question

  325. whether or not God

  326. understands my situation.

  327. We wonder if he truly understands

  328. how busy we are,

  329. how discouraged we feel,

  330. how little money we have,

  331. how bad things really are in my life.

  332. But when we entertain those thoughts,

  333. aren't we guilty of unbelief?

  334. In reality,

  335. aren't we saying,

  336. Lord, you're wrong,

  337. just as those at Jairus' house did

  338. on the day that the little girl died?

  339. But Jesus says,

  340. Be not afraid.

  341. Only believe.

  342. Last week in Luke 5,

  343. the Lord told Peter

  344. to cast his net into the deep

  345. despite his questions and doubts.

  346. But Peter obeyed

  347. even if he didn't believe

  348. and was blessed

  349. with a great catch of fish.

  350. God's statements may run contrary

  351. to what we think

  352. and to what human reason is,

  353. but that will never invalidate

  354. what God says in his word.

  355. What God says will always be true.

  356. John 17, 7 says,

  357. Sanctify them

  358. through thy truth,

  359. thy word is truth.

  360. Psalm 119, 51.

  361. I told you the wrong verse, brother.

  362. I'm very sorry about that.

  363. It was 119, 151.

  364. So I need new glasses.

  365. That one makes more sense, doesn't it?

  366. That one fits to the best.

  367. Okay.

  368. Where's he going with that verse?

  369. I can wait to see him

  370. mess this up.

  371. Okay.

  372. Not afraid, only believe.

  373. First Kings chapter 17,

    1 Kings 17 chapter mention

  374. God had instructed his prophet Elijah

  375. to go to a widow woman

  376. who would sustain him.

  377. Elijah found the lady

  378. and asked her for some bread

  379. and some water.

  380. And she said,

  381. Hey, all I got is a little oil

  382. and a little meal

  383. and I'm just about to bake it up

  384. so my son and I can eat

  385. and then die of starvation.

  386. What did Elijah say?

  387. That's okay.

  388. Make some for me first

  389. and then make it for you guys

  390. and things will be fine.

  391. Not afraid, only believe.

  392. And you know what?

  393. Their little cakes a meal,

  394. that's all they had

  395. for the entire famine.

  396. One little cake.

  397. But they lived, didn't they?

  398. They made it through the famine.

  399. Why?

  400. Trust and obey.

  401. They believed what God said

  402. and acted on it.

  403. Didn't make any sense

  404. yet it was still

  405. the miracle happened.

  406. You know,

  407. I think we've all heard it said

  408. that God said it,

  409. I believe it,

  410. and that settles it.

  411. And that really sounds strong.

  412. Sounds like I'm really spiritual.

  413. The fact of the matter is

  414. it doesn't matter

  415. what we think, does it?

  416. What God says is true

  417. whether we believe it or not.

  418. Yep.

  419. God said it,

  420. that's all there is.

  421. And this truth

  422. was about to come to life

  423. for Jairus and his family

  424. because we see the people

  425. in derision,

  426. verse number 40.

  427. And they laughed him to scorn,

  428. but when he had put them all out,

  429. he taketh the father

  430. and the mother of the damsel

  431. and them that were with him

  432. and entered in

  433. where the damsel was lying.

  434. It's hard to fathom

  435. that people would actually

  436. laugh scornfully

  437. at a time like this.

  438. Right?

  439. The death of a child,

  440. but we're going to make fun

  441. of this guy.

  442. Especially when they were laughing

  443. at the son of God himself.

  444. What's even more astounding

  445. is these people

  446. quite possibly

  447. knew Jesus personally.

  448. Where was he?

  449. He was in Capernaum.

  450. Matthew 9 tells us

  451. that's his own city.

  452. They should have known

  453. that the Lord

  454. wasn't lying

  455. or bragging

  456. or crazy.

  457. And maybe they should have

  458. given him some courtesy

  459. and respect

  460. and held their peace,

  461. especially during

  462. this time of mourning.

  463. You know,

  464. we question sometimes

  465. how people could have

  466. acted like this

  467. at this time,

  468. but how many times

  469. do we do that?

  470. I mean,

  471. before we judge,

  472. I think we should

  473. look at ourselves

  474. and ask the question,

  475. would I have made the cake?

  476. Elijah came to me.

  477. And there's enough

  478. for my family

  479. before we die.

  480. Am I going to give

  481. to the prophet of God first?

  482. Am I going to give to God?

  483. Am I going to believe

  484. what he says?

  485. Or am I going to make

  486. for myself and die?

  487. So oftentimes

  488. we resort to mocking

  489. when we don't understand.

  490. Because it's easier to doubt,

  491. Brother Darren,

  492. isn't it?

  493. It's easier to doubt.

  494. This is one time,

  495. this is one reason

  496. I think unbelievers

  497. sometimes we ridicule.

  498. And sometimes

  499. we get ridiculed

  500. by unbelievers.

  501. Right?

  502. Religion is a crutch.

  503. What you're looking for

  504. is what?

  505. Pie in the sky

  506. and the sweet

  507. by and by.

  508. They jeer at us

  509. and refuse to believe

  510. what they can't prove

  511. to their satisfaction.

  512. Right?

  513. Question the accuracy

  514. see the Bible

  515. and wonder

  516. why such an ancient book

  517. has our allegiance.

  518. But until they believe

  519. these things,

  520. they will never understand.

  521. 1 Corinthians 1,

    1 Corinthians 1:18

  522. verse 18 says,

  523. For the preaching

  524. of the cross

  525. is to them

  526. that perish foolishness,

  527. but unto us

  528. which are saved

  529. is the power of God.

  530. You know,

  531. it's interesting.

  532. Back in Matthew,

  533. when he describes

  534. the scene,

  535. he uses the word

  536. noise.

  537. Much noise

  538. was happening.

  539. Mark uses the word

  540. tumult.

  541. A lot of noise

  542. around unbelief,

  543. isn't there?

  544. A lot of noise.

  545. It's hard to make sense

  546. of it all

  547. through all the noise.

  548. But here's what I know

  549. in my own life.

  550. Can't make sense of it

  551. until I believe it.

  552. That sounds counterintuitive,

  553. but there's a reason

  554. that it's that way.

  555. And the reason is,

  556. until I believe,

  557. the Holy Spirit

  558. can't instruct me on it.

  559. We need the Holy Spirit

  560. to explain these things

  561. to us.

  562. And if we don't have

  563. the Holy Spirit in us,

  564. then we can't have

  565. the explanation.

  566. We can't understand.

  567. And therefore,

  568. they become foolishness.

  569. Here's 11.6.

  570. What do you suppose

  571. was running through

  572. Peter's mind

  573. when he followed

  574. Jesus to this house?

  575. Oh, we're going to

  576. see another show.

  577. Let's go check this out.

  578. Jesus, you're going to

  579. raise somebody from the dead?

  580. This is crazy.

  581. What's going on?

  582. I don't know.

  583. Bible doesn't say.

  584. Not very clear.

  585. Obviously, he had thoughts.

  586. It's fun to think about it.

  587. I try to think about

  588. what would I be thinking

  589. in this moment.

  590. Right?

  591. I think one of the mistakes

  592. that Christians make

  593. when they read the Bible

  594. is they always put themselves

  595. in the place

  596. of the hero character.

  597. Right?

  598. Or they'll take the opposite

  599. and say,

  600. well, I don't know

  601. why Peter did that

  602. because I would have

  603. never done that.

  604. That's a fallacy

  605. I have all the time.

  606. I like to think

  607. that I'm the most

  608. spiritual guy.

  609. I mean,

  610. why is it my name

  611. in the Bible?

  612. I'm so spiritual.

  613. But the fact of the matter is,

  614. things that these people

  615. live through and believe

  616. far outweigh anything

  617. that I'll probably ever do.

  618. and that's why my name

  619. will never be in a book.

  620. And my place

  621. when I read the Bible

  622. needs to be

  623. not I would have done it better

  624. or not how could they

  625. not have believed,

  626. but how can I take the lesson

  627. from this life

  628. and become a Christian

  629. that's actually worthy

  630. of living these stories?

  631. Why can't,

  632. why can't my,

  633. you know,

  634. what's the old thing?

  635. I once knew,

  636. okay,

  637. I grew up in church

  638. and he was always sad

  639. because his testimony was,

  640. I got saved

  641. at a young age.

  642. I grew up in church.

  643. That's so terrible.

  644. I went on one

  645. of these testimonies

  646. where, you know,

  647. I was a drug dealer

  648. and I murdered

  649. and I got saved

  650. and now I'm running

  651. a church of 7,000 people

  652. and I think to myself,

  653. no.

  654. The best testimony

  655. is I grew up in church

  656. because that's the way

  657. it should be.

  658. So I try to put myself

  659. not in the hero place

  660. but in the lowest place

  661. because that's where I am.

  662. So what was running

  663. through Peter's mind

  664. when he was looking

  665. at all this?

  666. Had he learned

  667. from his experience

  668. with the fish hole

  669. to trust Jesus

  670. even if he didn't understand

  671. or did he still allow doubts

  672. to shake his faith

  673. in what Jesus said?

  674. Because we will face situations

  675. where we must choose

  676. between doubt and faith

  677. and during these times

  678. we can ask the Lord

  679. to help us overcome

  680. our belief in his word.

  681. You know,

  682. in a different miracle

  683. another father came to the Lord

  684. requesting healing

  685. for his child.

  686. This child had a dumb spirit

  687. the Bible said.

  688. Right?

  689. And the disciples

  690. couldn't cast him out.

  691. The father struggled

  692. with doubt

  693. and needed the Lord

  694. to strengthen him,

  695. to strengthen his faith.

  696. Mark 9,

    Mark 9:23

  697. verse 23,

  698. Jesus said unto him,

  699. If thou canst believe

  700. all things are possible

  701. to him that believeth.

  702. And straightway

  703. the father of the child

  704. cried out

  705. and said with tears,

  706. Lord, I believe.

  707. Help thou my unbelief.

  708. You know,

  709. we all struggle

  710. with unbelief.

  711. However,

  712. we have a great God

  713. that can help us

  714. overcome our doubts.

  715. At Jairus' home,

  716. those who laugh scornfully

  717. at Christ

  718. did not exercise

  719. that faith.

  720. And although we find

  721. our own faith lacking

  722. at times,

  723. we can choose to exercise

  724. the faith we do have.

  725. How do we do that?

  726. We do that.

  727. My third favorite verse

  728. in the whole Bible,

  729. Hebrews 11, 1.

  730. Now faith is the substance

  731. of things hoped for,

  732. the evidence of things

  733. not seen.

  734. Great verse.

  735. Clears up a lot of bad

  736. things we believe

  737. in our life.

  738. Despite the spectator's

  739. derision and unbelief,

  740. Jairus continued inside

  741. to heal the young girl.

  742. Praise the Lord

  743. that he was going to accomplish

  744. what he set out to do

  745. despite what everybody

  746. else said.

  747. Christ was coming

  748. once again

  749. to confirm

  750. that he was not only

  751. the trustworthy

  752. but the all-powerful Lord.

  753. And he is

  754. the sufficient Savior.

  755. To the crowd,

  756. Christ was too late.

  757. The child was dead.

  758. And it seemed ridiculous

  759. that he would say

  760. that she was merely sleeping.

  761. Everybody said

  762. she was dead.

  763. She was in fact dead.

  764. And despite the sensitivity

  765. of the situation,

  766. they began to mock him openly.

  767. In the next few moments,

  768. however,

  769. their scorn

  770. were changed to astonishment.

  771. Spectators,

  772. grieving parents,

  773. and the disciples

  774. were about to find out

  775. that Jesus

  776. is the all-sufficient,

  777. almighty Savior

  778. who can do anything.

  779. What about Peter?

  780. That's what this lesson

  781. is about.

  782. Peter.

  783. Number 37.

  784. And he suffered

  785. no man to follow him

  786. save Peter

  787. and James and John,

  788. the brother of James.

  789. See,

  790. of all the disciples,

  791. only three were allowed

  792. to go along with him.

  793. Why?

  794. Just said he did.

  795. Peter, however,

  796. did respond

  797. to the call of Christ

  798. when he was called.

  799. There was a decision

  800. to leave all

  801. and to follow him.

  802. And that set about

  803. a certain future.

  804. And because of that,

  805. they were going to see

  806. something that was a reward.

  807. It's interesting

  808. time after time,

  809. Peter showed a great desire

  810. to be near Christ.

  811. I mean,

  812. Peter was the first one

  813. to come to Christ

  814. on the water.

  815. Peter was the first one

  816. to run to the empty tomb,

  817. even if he wasn't

  818. the fastest.

  819. And this is a good lesson

  820. for us today, isn't it?

  821. When we stay close to Christ,

  822. we will experience

  823. miraculous things.

  824. And we'll have the opportunity

  825. to impact others.

  826. I wonder,

  827. did Peter have joy that day?

  828. And did he have joy

  829. in retelling the story

  830. of Jairus' daughter

  831. being resurrected,

  832. not resurrected,

  833. being brought back to life?

  834. I mean,

  835. what a cool story.

  836. I mean,

  837. talk about a witnessing tool.

  838. We all look for stories

  839. to try to witness

  840. to people, right?

  841. This is a...

  842. I don't got nothing like that.

  843. It must have been

  844. a special time

  845. to see death defeated

  846. and mourning

  847. turned into rejoicing.

  848. Look at verse 42.

  849. Straightway the damsel

  850. arose and walked,

  851. for she was of the age

  852. of 12 years old,

  853. and they were astonished

  854. with a great astonishment.

  855. So many times,

  856. Peter was faced

  857. with a situation

  858. he did not understand.

  859. When Christ said

  860. the girl was only sleeping,

  861. what did Peter think?

  862. Did he feel uncomfortable

  863. being associated

  864. with the man

  865. everyone was laughing at?

  866. But he didn't abandon the Lord,

  867. and as a result,

  868. he witnessed the Lord

  869. miraculously raising

  870. someone to life.

  871. I think God wants

  872. to bless us,

  873. but only those

  874. that remain faithful

  875. and obey

  876. can Christ bless

  877. and will fully experience

  878. his wonderful works.

  879. And Peter did see

  880. the maid arising

  881. in verse 42.

  882. Straightway she arose

  883. and walked.

  884. Jesus took her

  885. by the hand.

  886. Family was close by,

  887. mom and dad were there,

  888. the three disciples,

  889. and the Lord's voice

  890. came out,

  891. damsel,

  892. I say unto thee,

  893. arise.

  894. Taliyata kumi,

  895. the Bible says,

  896. which is being interpreted,

  897. damsel,

  898. I say unto thee,

  899. arise.

  900. But not only did she arise,

  901. she walked

  902. and she ate.

  903. She had not just been

  904. brought back to life,

  905. but she was restored

  906. to full health.

  907. because God doesn't

  908. do anything halfway.

  909. After all,

  910. Jesus had told the father,

  911. what?

  912. Fear not,

  913. only believe,

  914. and she shall be made whole.

  915. Joshua 23, 14.

  916. Thank you.

  917. Twelve-year-old girl

  918. had been raised

  919. from death to life

  920. by the giver

  921. of life himself.

  922. The one who created her,

  923. raised her from the dead.

  924. Likewise,

  925. when we're saved,

  926. Christ breathes life

  927. into us in a way.

  928. And the great thing

  929. about that,

  930. it's instant.

  931. There's no earning it,

  932. there's no buying it,

  933. there's no hoping for it,

  934. there's no levels

  935. of ascendancy.

  936. When you're saved,

  937. you're saved instantly.

  938. Just like this girl

  939. was raised instantly.

  940. Because of this,

  941. we are commanded

  942. to be ambassadors

  943. to bring life

  944. to a dying world.

  945. Second Corinthians 5, 20.

  946. Now,

  947. then we are ambassadors

  948. for Christ.

  949. As though God

  950. did beseech you by us,

  951. we pray you in Christ's stead,

  952. be you reconciled to God.

  953. I mean,

  954. you can imagine

  955. the parents' astonishment

  956. in verse number 42.

  957. They were astonished

  958. with a great astonishment.

  959. That's a lot of astonishment.

  960. And how could you not be?

  961. Their dying child

  962. was raised from,

  963. was brought back to life.

  964. A great miracle

  965. was performed that day.

  966. We can see miracles

  967. in our life.

  968. Every time somebody

  969. gets saved,

  970. that's a miracle.

  971. Yep.

  972. We're dead in our sins,

  973. the Bible says.

  974. But we can be raised

  975. in newness of life

  976. just by believing

  977. and not being afraid.

  978. I think that hampers

  979. sometimes people

  980. from getting saved.

  981. they're afraid.

  982. They're afraid

  983. that they won't get

  984. to hang out

  985. with their buddies anymore.

  986. They're afraid

  987. people won't like them anymore

  988. because let's face it,

  989. Christians are weird.

  990. I talked to a man

  991. one time,

  992. he didn't want to get saved

  993. because he had

  994. a particular sin

  995. that he liked a lot.

  996. He didn't want

  997. to give it up.

  998. And he knew

  999. that if he got saved,

1000. God was going to deal

  1001. with him about it.

  1002. He didn't want

  1003. to give it up.

  1004. Sometimes I think

  1005. people are afraid

  1006. of the unknown.

  1007. You grow up worldly,

  1008. you know worldly,

  1009. but spiritual things

  1010. can be an unknown

  1011. and can be frightening.

  1012. Be not afraid,

  1013. only believe.

  1014. Luke and Mark

  1015. both state that

  1016. Jairus and his wife

  1017. were astonished.

  1018. In some ways,

  1019. this could be described

  1020. as partial faith.

  1021. Jairus believed

  1022. that Christ had

  1023. the power to heal

  1024. but didn't believe

  1025. that Jesus could likewise

  1026. raise from the dead.

  1027. When the news came

  1028. that his daughter died,

  1029. Jesus said,

  1030. believe only

1031. and she shall be made whole.

  1032. Jairus heard that,

1033. yet he and his wife

  1034. were surprised

  1035. when it happened.

  1036. Astonishment does

  1037. involve surprise,

  1038. doesn't it?

  1039. When we pray

  1040. and ask God

  1041. to do mighty things

1042. and when he does them,

  1043. are we surprised

1044. or do we expect it?

  1045. As believers,

1046. we know we have a big God.

  1047. Therefore,

1048. we ought to be possessors

  1049. of a big faith.

  1050. Remember,

  1051. God can do anything

  1052. except fail.

  1053. Noah believed God

1054. was going to send a flood.

  1055. David believed God

  1056. would give him victory

  1057. over Goliath.

  1058. Elijah believed God

  1059. could send down fire

  1060. on Mount Carmel.

1061. If there's one TV show

  1062. I want to see,

  1063. action movie,

  1064. that's the one

  1065. I want to see.

  1066. I mean,

  1067. seriously.

1068. I want to see the look

1069. on all those guys' faces.

  1070. When they're trying

  1071. to wake up,

  1072. they're sleeping God.

  1073. Oh, hey,

  1074. maybe if you're

  1075. a little bit louder,

  1076. he'll wake up.

  1077. And then Elijah's like,

  1078. no, no,

  1079. more water,

  1080. more water.

  1081. And the fire

  1082. consumes the dust.

1083. I want to see that show.

  1084. Daniel believed God

  1085. could shut the mouth

  1086. of the lions.

  1087. D.L. Moody believed

  1088. that God would save

  1089. multitudes through the

  1090. faithful preaching

  1091. of his word.

1092. And we too can experience

  1093. the blessings

  1094. of those Christians

  1095. if we would believe

1096. God can do the impossible.

  1097. You know,

  1098. believing the Lord's word

  1099. is a choice.

  1100. We can intellectualize it

  1101. all day long.

1102. At the end of the day,

  1103. it's still a choice

  1104. because nobody can prove

  1105. it to your satisfaction

1106. if you'll never be satisfied.

  1107. The spectators mocked

  1108. in unbelief.

1109. Jairus chose to have faith

  1110. that the Lord could

  1111. heal his daughter.

  1112. You know,

  1113. the Bible doesn't really

  1114. say where Peter stood.

  1115. Did he doubt?

1116. Did he go with the crowd?

1117. Or did he believe that day?

  1118. Even though he didn't

  1119. understand.

  1120. Either way,

  1121. the Lord demonstrated

1122. he was worthy of belief.

  1123. And he is.

  1124. Jesus is worthy

  1125. of our belief.

  1126. And that Jesus

  1127. demonstrated that day

  1128. he knew exactly

  1129. what he was doing,

  1130. that he is all-powerful

  1131. and even over death.

  1132. Like Jairus,

  1133. we all face struggles.

  1134. And despite our problems,

  1135. God's greater

  1136. than all of them.

  1137. He not only knows

  1138. where we are,

1139. but he feels our pain,

  1140. doesn't he?

  1141. The Bible says so.

1142. It is he whom Isaiah

1143. called the man of sorrows.

  1144. Surely,

1145. he hath borne our griefs

  1146. and carried our sorrows.

  1147. It may appear

  1148. God doesn't care.

  1149. Sometimes we think

  1150. God doesn't understand

  1151. because, you know,

  1152. he's not working out

  1153. to the way

1154. I think it should work out.

  1155. Remember?

  1156. Remember?

  1157. That false sense

  1158. of being in charge?

  1159. But when we're tempted

  1160. to doubt,

  1161. I encourage you

  1162. to remember Jairus.

  1163. Christ sees exactly
