  1. Right. Glad to be here with you

  2. and we are in the book of Jeremiah

  3. and I I trust it's been a good journey

  4. for you. Jeremiah is a hard book to

  5. teach. It's just a lot of repetition. Uh

  6. 70 times he rebukes him for idolatry.

  7. Think about that in one book. I counted

  8. them. I underlined them all the way

  9. through Jeremiah before I started it.

  10. And it gets a little worrisome. But

  11. after all of that, all those

  12. confrontations,

  13. you get into the good section, the new

  14. covenant. And wonderful stuff. We are in

  15. the most precious part of Jeremiah when

  16. you get to chapter 30, 31, 32, 33, 34,

  17. and 35 even as part of it. It's just the

  18. heart of the book. And there's such

  19. wonderful stuff here. And so if you're

  20. new with us, you're picking us up.

  21. you're picking up the book of Jeremiah

  22. with us uh in the kind of long after mid

  23. series, but it is a wonderful book. The

  24. stuff's on our messages are online

  25. and I have to say I've really enjoyed

  26. teaching this and I hope you've enjoyed

  27. hearing it. This is the second time in

  28. this church we've thought this book all

  29. the way through. Uh and uh I've enjoyed

  30. going through it the second time.

  31. uh and uh just a wonderful experience

  32. for me. Tonight

  33. we have a very interesting section

  34. especially

  35. in light of the place where we're living

  36. in Ohio.

  37. Uh Jeremiah does something here.

  38. He brings in a group of people who

  39. actually migrated from the north,

  40. Israel, that had been in captivity for a

  41. long time down south.

  42. And they were a group that were not

  43. acclimated into society, into Jewish

  44. society.

  45. Uh they had particular and peculiar

  46. ideas of how to live. And that's the

  47. whole point of this really. And we'll

  48. see why when we come to it.

  49. And there's going to be a contrast to

  50. their faithfulness

  51. to their family tradition

  52. passed on

  53. to the unfaithfulness of the nation

  54. to God's revealed will.

  55. Family traditions are great. We all have

  56. them. And but they kept theirs. And

  57. theirs was a little different. It was a

  58. little off off the wall, but they kept

  59. it. And the thing they've been keeping

  60. it for two and a half centuries.

  61. You try that with a family reunion, it

  62. doesn't work, right? Family reunions

  63. usually last until the parents die or

  64. the grandparents and then everybody kind

  65. of falls apart.

  66. And uh so he used to have the Hixon

  67. reunion in Wilmington. My great

  68. great-grandfather had a fishing camp uh

  69. on a river uh over there near Cincinnati

  70. or Wilmington. We go there every summer.

  71. every fourth of July, everything. We

  72. knew where we were going. Uh we went

  73. over there and it was fishing, shooting

  74. guns, and uh doing stuff like that and

  75. uh being with family and tons of food.

  76. That was a tradition. There was no

  77. question of what you did on the 4th of

  78. July. Get in the old 53 Chevy and get

  79. over there and enjoy your time. Maybe

  80. swim in the river or fish in the river

  81. or whatever.

  82. Well, watch what's going on here.

  83. These people that Jeremiah brings in

  84. were faithful to their family tradition,

  85. even though it was a very odd kind of

  86. tradition.

  87. And they've been faithful for over 250

  88. years.

  89. And they refuse to break it.

  90. And the contrast with them was that the

  91. nation of Israel had broken not a family

  92. tradition

  93. but God's revealed will.

  94. And so it's a tremendous contrast going

  95. on here. And if you get this, it will be

  96. a very big blessing to you

  97. and a challenge to all of us.

  98. Okay, let's read chapter 35 and see if

  99. you can follow along in your mind.

  100. The word Jeremiah 35. The word which

  101. came to Jeremiah from the Lord in the

  102. days of Jehoakim, the son of Josiah,

  103. king of Judah, saying, now this is a

  104. flashback.

  105. Jeremiah is already living in the days

  106. of Zedekite,

  107. but he's doing a flashback

  108. to something that happened before that

  109. with Jeremiah and this group of people,

  110. and he's doing it for a reason. So, the

  111. word which came to Jeremiah, it's in

  112. this particular section, for a reason.

  113. the word which came unto Jeremiah from

  114. the Lord in the land of Jehookim, the

  115. son of Josiah, king of Judah, saying,

  116. "Go unto the house of the Recabites,

  117. and speak to them, and bring them into

  118. the house of the Lord, into one of the

  119. chambers, and give them wine to drink."

  120. What's the problem there? Everybody

  121. drank wine there. They didn't drink it

  122. like American alcohol content, which is

  123. a lot bigger than theirs, but it was

  124. alcohol and you could get drunk if you

  125. drank a g several gallons of it. But,

  126. you know, the point was give them give

  127. them wine to drink. Then I took uh

  128. Jezaniah, the son of Jeremiah, the son

  129. of Havaniah, and his brethren, and all

  130. his sons, and the whole house of the

  131. Recabites, and I brought them into the

  132. house of the Lord. So he invites these

  133. people into the temple which was still

  134. standing at this point. Now remember in

  135. our previous chapter, the city's under

  136. attack by the Babylonians. It's going to

  137. be the city's going to be destroyed.

  138. Temple's going to be destroyed. All

  139. that's going to happen. This is a

  140. flashback for a reason. And we'll we'll

  141. get back to that in a moment.

  142. And uh he says in verse four, I brought

  143. them into the house of the Lord in the

  144. chamber of the son of Hanan, the son of

  145. Egdallayia, man, a man of God, who was

  146. by the chamber of the princes, which is

  147. above the chamber of Messiah, the son of

  148. Shalom, the keeper of the door. And we

  149. don't have to remember all those details

  150. or even try to figure them all out.

  151. These are people lived long ago. Uh and

  152. uh but he brings them in. And I set

  153. before the sons of the house of the

  154. Recoites pots full of wine. We're not

  155. talking about a bottle of wine. We're

  156. talking about a big pot of wine,

  157. pots full of wine

  158. and cups. And I said to them, "Drink

  159. wine."

  160. But they said, "We will drink no wine.

  161. We will drink no wine."

  162. Now, some some Bible people use this as

  163. a anti-drinking

  164. chapter. It's actually not.

  165. I I'm a tea totter. I don't drink. Uh

  166. but that doesn't mean we don't require

  167. that in our church uh for others. Uh but

  168. uh I like the taste of it too well, so I

  169. just stay away.

  170. But anyways, these people are told,

  171. they're commanded by a prophet of God,

  172. a prophet of God, tells them, "Drink, I

  173. said to them, drink wine." And they

  174. said, "We will drink no wine."

  175. Why? For Jonadabad,

  176. the son of Raab our father, commanded

  177. us, saying, "You shall drink no wine,

  178. neither ye nor your sons forever."

  179. Wait a minute. That guy lived a couple

  180. hundred years before this. He told us

  181. not to do it, so we're not doing it.

  182. Neither shall you build houses, or seow

  183. seed, nor plant vineyards, nor have any.

  184. But all your days you'll dwell in tents,

  185. that you may live many days in the land

  186. where you are sojourers.

  187. Now again, this is not an anti-alcohol

  188. chapter.

  189. The reason they weren't to drink wine

  190. was that they weren't allowed to stay in

  191. one place to plant vineyards.

  192. If you plant a vineyard, you got to you

  193. got to take care of the vineyard.

  194. They were people who were to be on the

  195. move all the time.

  196. They weren't to stay in one place. Kind

  197. of a gypsy thing. They were to move

  198. about up and down the land, up and down

  199. the land, copying Abraham, Isaac, and

  200. Jacob who went up and down the land, up

  201. and down the land. That's the lifestyle

  202. that their ancestor put on them.

  203. And they lived that lifestyle

  204. kind of a gypsy lifestyle.

  205. And the wine is not the main. Neither

  206. were they allowed to build houses. Did

  207. you get that?

  208. So it's not just an anti-wine thing.

  209. It's an anti-house thing.

  210. Or seow seed.

  211. You You're not to be sewing seed. You're

  212. not to stay in one place and have a

  213. garden and harvest out of it. You're not

  214. to build a house and stay in one place.

  215. You're on the move. You're on the move.

  216. You're on the move.

  217. Nor plant a vineyard. There comes the

  218. wine. If you're going to have wine, you

  219. had to plant a vineyard. Ask Noah.

  220. So, the point is none of that for you.

  221. You are to have a uh an existence that's

  222. on the move. You're to dwell in tents,

  223. not in houses. You're to be on the move.

  224. you're not to stay in one place. Now,

  225. actually, this was in contrast to God's

  226. biblical ideal for them

  227. because in Old Testament religion, the

  228. 12 tribes were to go to the land. This

  229. is your farm. You keep that farm in the

  230. family. You marry within this group and

  231. you that's your that's your plot of

  232. land. You stay on it that your father

  233. was on, grandfather, great-grandfather,

  234. great great-grandfather, and keep it

  235. going. That was the ideal. each drive

  236. out a spot. That's your spot. Stay in

  237. your spot.

  238. So that's what God commanded them after

  239. they got into the promised land. Right?

  240. Now before that they were slaves in

  241. Egypt and before that they were wonders

  242. with Abraham. It's what Abraham, Isaac,

  243. and Jacob did. But that wasn't a pattern

  244. for the whole nation. That was just a

  245. pattern for a period of time until God

  246. brought him out of Egypt and brought him

  247. into the promised land. The right thing

  248. for them to do then, the right thing,

  249. biblical thing was to what?

  250. This is my land. I'm marrying within.

  251. I'm not leaving this land. I'm sticking

  252. on where God put me and that's my life.

  253. Have kids, grandkids, great grandkids.

  254. Let them do the same. Pass it on.

  255. Now actually that's not a bad life

  256. but it was it there there was a reason

  257. for that life that God commanded them to

  258. do that this tribe gets this this this

  259. this you live here you live here you

  260. live here

  261. and they were to develop it and over the

  262. time pass it on.

  263. But this group was commanded not to do

  264. that by their ancestor. They were to

  265. break the mold.

  266. And when we see who that ancestor is

  267. and what he had to deal with in his own

  268. life in Israel, the northern kingdom,

  269. you'll see why he did that.

  270. So, but anyway, in verse 12, a verse 8,

  271. thus we've obeyed the voice of Jonadab,

  272. the son of Rachab, our father, in all

  273. that he's charged us to drink no wine

  274. all our days. we, our wives, our sons,

  275. or our daughters, nor to build houses

  276. for us to dwell in, neither to have a

  277. vineyard, nor field, nor seed. But we

  278. dwelt in tents and have obeyed and done

  279. according to all that Jonadab our father

  280. commanded us. So there are people on the

  281. move.

  282. And the idea is here, don't settle down

  283. in one place because the temptation may

  284. be too great because of idolatry in all

  285. these places.

  286. He had a reason for that, right?

  287. Remember what what happened to Abraham's

  288. nephew when he went over to to the

  289. well-watered plains of Sodom?

  290. That is a good place. I was there's a

  291. lot of a lot of places to put your

  292. cattle and sheep, goats, and he wasn't

  293. thinking about the people that were

  294. living there. And when you think about

  295. what was going on in the north, the

  296. northern kingdom, when Johnab lived,

  297. Johnab was in the same chariot as the

  298. man that wiped out all the idoltors

  299. in Israel.

  300. He was he was in on that. He was sick of

  301. that. He didn't want his descendants to

  302. be involved in that again. And that's

  303. why he made the charge that he did. But

  304. anyway, they're fulfilling it. But

  305. that's not the real point here yet. It's

  306. the point is they were faithful to the

  307. traditions of their ancestor in a way

  308. the whole nation was not faithful to

  309. God.

  310. We should be family traditions are

  311. great. Everybody's got them and it that

  312. that those are good things.

  313. that some people are more faithful to

  314. their family traditions than they are to

  315. God's revealed will.

  316. And that's what the whole point is.

  317. And so in verse 10, the answer to

  318. Jeremiah was, "But we have dwelt in

  319. tents and have obeyed and done according

  320. to all that Johnab our father commanded

  321. us. But it came to pass when

  322. Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, came up

  323. into the land that we said, "Come, let's

  324. go to Jerusalem for fear of the army of

  325. the Calaldanss and for fear of the army

  326. of the Syrians. So we dwell in

  327. Jerusalem. We're here, but we don't want

  328. to be here. It's because the Babylonians

  329. are coming and we got to have a place to

  330. be. A tent's not going to protect us. So

  331. we're in Jerusalem. We're not city

  332. people. We're we're people on the move,

  333. but we're not we're still not drinking

  334. any wine and we're still not doing live.

  335. We don't want to live like you people

  336. have been living over here.

  337. Then the word of the Lord came to

  338. Jeremiah saying, you see, God commanded

  339. Jeremiah to do this. He must have

  340. scratched his head or his beard to to do

  341. it, but he did it. And then God

  342. explained why he did it. It was another

  343. one of Jeremiah's

  344. uh tasks like wearing the underwear over

  345. his clothes, the linen underwear and

  346. walking around getting the soiled in the

  347. Euphrates River and going to the

  348. potter's house and all the other stuff

  349. God was asking him to do

  350. to illustrate his message. It's another

  351. one of those things.

  352. And so in verse 13, then said, ' Thus

  353. says the Lord of host of God, go tell

  354. the men God of Israel, go tell the men

  355. of Judah and the inhabitants of

  356. Jerusalem, will you not receive

  357. instruction to hearken to my words, says

  358. the Lord, the words of Jonadab, the son

  359. of Reachab, which he commanded his sons

  360. not to drink wine or perform, for unto

  361. this day they drink none, but obey their

  362. father's commandment. Notwithstanding,

  363. I've spoken to you, rising up early and

  364. speaking, but you hearken not to me.

  365. There's the lesson. They're listening to

  366. their ancestor. You're not listening to

  367. your God.

  368. They're obedient to their ancestor.

  369. And they've been doing it for 250ome

  370. years. You aren't listening to me at

  371. all.

  372. And so their obedience to their ancestor

  373. for his traditions

  374. is a contrast to the nation's

  375. disobedience to God and his word.

  376. How many people have a Christmas

  377. tradition?

  378. Everybody from right our family when our

  379. kids were little, we went to Toledo to

  380. Linda's dad on Christmas. We went to my

  381. parents uh a few days later over in New

  382. Philadelphia every year. Same thing.

  383. Toledo, Christmas, uh New Philadelphia

  384. before New Year's.

  385. That was it. Every time. But you accept.

  386. And every Thanksgiving we went to my

  387. sisters in Gal.

  388. So that was us. You probably had

  389. something similar. families do stuff.

  390. And so that's and what he's saying is

  391. here, you've been faithful to your

  392. family traditions, but you haven't

  393. faithful to my word and telling you and

  394. telling you

  395. how to live.

  396. You haven't been doing

  397. get away from the idols. Give them up.

  398. You haven't been doing.

  399. And so that's really what God's saying

  400. in verse 13. Thus says the Lord of

  401. hosts, the God of Israel, go and tell

  402. the men of Judah and the inhabitants of

  403. Jerusalem, will you not receive

  404. instruction to hearken to my words, says

  405. the Lord, the words of Johnab, the son

  406. of Reichab, which he commanded his sons

  407. not to drink wine, are performed to this

  408. day. They drink none, but obey their

  409. father's commandment. Notwithstanding,

  410. I've spoken to you, rising up early,

  411. speaking, but you've not hearkened to

  412. me. They're listening to their ancestor,

  413. but you're not listening to your God.

  414. How many churches do things because

  415. we've always done it that way?

  416. The famous words of a dead church. We

  417. can't change. We've always done it that

  418. way. Now, some of those things are good.

  419. Just keep doing them. But there's some

  420. things that weren't that good in the

  421. beginning or they're not the best and

  422. they're just we can't change.

  423. People are more loyal often to tradition

  424. than they are to God's word.

  425. God's word should be able to break

  426. through any traditions we have, right?

  427. Or any issues we have.

  428. And it it takes it should take

  429. precedent. We all ought to be sensitive

  430. to what God is saying in the Bible.

  431. It might go against our desires. It

  432. might go against our dearest thoughts.

  433. It might convict us. And I've told this

  434. story probably 10 times in this pulpit,

  435. but I was assistant pastor at Dober

  436. Bible Church. And

  437. there was a man that he had a fair

  438. amount of money in town and he knew all

  439. the bankers. He was a builder and he he

  440. did a lot of uh projects here and there.

  441. And he got we we needed a new building.

  442. We were meeting in an old building. We

  443. had about 300 people. We were way uh

  444. under staff for what we needed. And we

  445. had a piece of land to buy and we needed

  446. to raise money. And he got the idea. He

  447. says, "I know all these bankers,

  448. preacher. I'll get some money out of

  449. those bankers for the church." He meant

  450. so well. He he meant well. And I bet he

  451. could.

  452. And here I am, a young preacher. I mean,

  453. I'm 20. I'm in my 20s. This guy was

  454. probably

  455. 60 at least.

  456. And he says that to me and I know he's

  457. really wants us to do that. Go to the

  458. bankers and get money to raise the

  459. church. I bet he can do it because he

  460. knew them all.

  461. And I had to deal with him on it. And I

  462. said, I called him by name and I said,

  463. "Boy, I really appreciate I prayed

  464. first. Lord, help me say the right thing

  465. to this man. I'm a young man telling an

  466. old man trying to correct an older man."

  467. I said, "Boy, I want to thank you for

  468. your idea. That's it's really good that

  469. you want to help the church that way,

  470. but there is there's a problem. There

  471. was something about it that's not going

  472. to work.

  473. And I took him to to uh third John

  474. that the the missionaries went out and

  475. they took nothing of the Gentiles.

  476. You don't use unsaved people's money to

  477. build churches

  478. of biblical. you don't raise money uh to

  479. build churches

  480. from unsaved people. That doesn't mean

  481. you have to anybody comes in the door.

  482. You can't put any money in the plate

  483. because we we don't know if you're saved

  484. or not. We don't do that. That's not

  485. what I'm saying. I'm saying it's God's

  486. God's people support God's work.

  487. And I I just I'll tell you that man was

  488. such a blessing to me. I was scared to

  489. do that to him because I didn't want to

  490. have to contradict him. He was so

  491. excited about his idea. I read that

  492. verse and he said, 'Well, if that's what

  493. the Bible says, then that's what we got

  494. to do. He just did a 180. I've never

  495. forgot what that man did.

  496. I I hope that I could be as sensitive to

  497. God's word that man is or was. I'm sure

  498. he's been in heaven for a long time

  499. because that's 50ome years ago and he

  500. was 60 then. So um this is the point and

  501. this is the review and this is what God

  502. wants people to see. We should be

  503. sensitive to his word. If God says it,

  504. that settles it.

  505. If God says it, that settles it. Once we

  506. have the mind of God, once we know what

  507. the Bible says on any subject, it may

  508. cross our dearest desires, our greatest

  509. plans. Nope. that settles that God's

  510. word takes priority over my plans or

  511. anybody else's plans.

  512. And so

  513. that's the picture here. And the problem

  514. was they obeyed their ancestor, but the

  515. Jewish nation was disobeying God. And it

  516. was chronic disobedience. It just wasn't

  517. a slip here or slip there. Chronic

  518. disobedience. Hundreds of years of

  519. disobedience.

  520. prophet after prophet. And God says in

  521. verse 15, "And I've sent also to you all

  522. my servants, the prophets, rising up

  523. early, sending them, saying, "Return now

  524. every man from his evil way, and men

  525. your doings, and go not after other gods

  526. to serve them, and you'll dwell in the

  527. land. All you got to do is stop the

  528. idolatry. I gave you the land.

  529. Even after you've done it, just stop and

  530. that'll be it.

  531. and you'll dwell in the land which I've

  532. given to you and to your fathers, but

  533. you have not inclined your heart nor

  534. hearken to me.

  535. So, because the sons of Jonadab, the son

  536. of Richab, have performed the

  537. commandment of their father, which he

  538. commanded them, but this people have not

  539. hearkened to me. Therefore, thus says

  540. the Lord God of hosts, the God of

  541. Israel, behold, I will bring upon Judah

  542. and upon all the inhabitants of

  543. Jerusalem, all the evil, that means all

  544. the calamity. That Hebrew word means uh

  545. calamity. Uh doesn't mean God does bad

  546. things. It means he's going to bring

  547. calamity or bad things on people

  548. that I've pronounced against them

  549. because I've spoken to them and they've

  550. not heard and I've called to them, but

  551. they've not answered.

  552. That's the contrast. Everybody get that?

  553. I think it's a powerful contrast.

  554. It's a humbling thing.

  555. And Jeremiah said to the house of the

  556. Recoites, "Thus says the Lord of Hosts,

  557. the God of Israel, because you've obeyed

  558. the commandment of Jonadab, your father,

  559. and kept all his precepts and done

  560. according to all that he's commanded

  561. you. Therefore, thus says the Lord of

  562. hosts, the God of Israel, God, the son

  563. of Reab, shall not lack a man to stand

  564. before me forever. I'm going to work in

  565. that family. I'm going to bless them.

  566. Somebody's going to get saved every

  567. generation.

  568. Amazing thing. And God appreciates

  569. obedience,

  570. submission.

  571. The greatest thing we can do for our

  572. children and grandchildren is to be

  573. sensitive to God's word.

  574. And doesn't mean all our kids are

  575. necessarily get saved when we want them

  576. to get saved. We we know that that's

  577. that's probably asking more than than we

  578. always get. But you you know it does

  579. mean that God will God sees who sens it

  580. and he he will help us with our children

  581. and God's working in their lives sooner

  582. or later.

  583. Now to try to illustrate this and think

  584. about what we're talking about, take a

  585. ride in Amish country, right?

  586. My wife had just assumed go to Amish

  587. country as the beach.

  588. I'd assume go to the mountains as the

  589. beach. We kind of do both. We try to go

  590. to the Smokies and then Myrtle Beach.

  591. And sometimes we do that. Try to get

  592. both. But normally we got to choose.

  593. If you go to Amish country, what do you

  594. see? You see people with horses and

  595. buggies.

  596. Why are they doing that? Cuz their

  597. ancestors did it.

  598. And they're just they're they're they're

  599. they're doing it. And many of the Amish

  600. are very uh legalistic. They think

  601. they're Christians. Some of them are,

  602. but I think a lot of them don't even

  603. know the gospel. I I pastored up there.

  604. A lot of them don't know the gospel. A

  605. lot of the Menanites do. Some do, some

  606. don't. I'm sure some of the Amish do.

  607. But uh you know, they they have their

  608. ways and uh they dress plainly. They use

  609. hooks and eyes instead of buttons. They

  610. got different things that they do.

  611. And they refuse to take part in civil

  612. affairs to vote or serve in the military

  613. or have more than an eighth grade

  614. education. And they do they have their

  615. rural existence. And there's a lot of

  616. beauty in it. There is a lot of beauty

  617. in it. And I've taken many people up to

  618. Amish country just to enjoy what goes on

  619. there and ride on an Amish buggy and

  620. visit an Amish farm and eat Amish food

  621. and all that.

  622. Now, uh,

  623. what an interesting thing all of this

  624. is.

  625. And how did the Amish become the Amish?

  626. A fellow by the name of Jacob Aman in

  627. the 17th century, a Swiss fellow, a

  628. Menanite bishop, he started all this

  629. stuff and Amish life began and we've had

  630. it ever since.

  631. Well, here the Recoites are an Amish-ike

  632. group, if we can just say it. 6th

  633. century BC,

  634. they rejected the modern ways of people

  635. in the promised land of houses,

  636. vineyards, and farms and and so forth.

  637. They didn't own land. They lived in a

  638. tent.

  639. They didn't settle down. They just kept

  640. on the move. And they did it because

  641. idolatry is dangerous.

  642. you get too comfortable and they did it

  643. for 250 years at this point. Kind of

  644. like that's what the Amish. It's almost

  645. the same. The Pennsylvania Dutch came

  646. from Egypt and and and of course ended

  647. up in Ohio. We got more Amish than they

  648. got there now. But uh and the ancestor

  649. that's mentioned here that told him not

  650. to drink wine, he actually rode in the

  651. chariot with Joo, who killed off a bunch

  652. of Baal worshippers. He was in his

  653. chariot. That's how far back it goes. 2

  654. Kings chapter 10:15 and 23. And Jonadab

  655. was austere. He was well respected. And

  656. he saw the handwriting on the wall for

  657. the northern kingdom. And he he judged

  658. that right.

  659. And he saw the captivity that took

  660. people into idolatry. And of course they

  661. moved south and just kept moving on. But

  662. then ultimately they're in Jerusalem for

  663. for

  664. uh the time that the Babylonians are

  665. attacking.

  666. So the Recabites are followers of him

  667. and uh they're not anti-alcohol

  668. anymore than they're anti-land.

  669. They they're just doing it because he

  670. told them to do it. So they're not tied

  671. down. They're they're they're flexible

  672. and they move about

  673. and they were a separation group and but

  674. actually it kind of worked

  675. in one way but it's not that the Bible

  676. approves of everything they were doing

  677. but God is saying they were sensitive to

  678. their ancestor and you're not sensitive

  679. to my word.

  680. And so that's the picture.

  681. Now by the way Jeremiah drank himself

  682. So, it's not an anti-alcohol thing. I

  683. hope we understand that. And and some

  684. churches are anti-alcohol, some aren't.

  685. Uh I grew up in a Baptist church. We

  686. always were anti-alcohol in that church.

  687. Uh but that didn't stop people from

  688. drinking. I know that. But anyway,

  689. people would say it on Sunday and be

  690. different sometimes. But uh having said

  691. that and I'm thankful for some of those

  692. warnings I got as a young man and even

  693. though I don't see all of it the same

  694. way. But uh we have alcoholism in my

  695. family and I don't want any part of it

  696. because I've seen what it does to people

  697. not in my parents but in family before

  698. that great greatgrandfather.

  699. So anyway that's the picture. So we have

  700. the prophet Jeremiah's offer. We have

  701. their recobitees response and

  702. uh they said we won't do it just because

  703. a prophet asked us to do it. We're not

  704. doing it. That was pressure.

  705. So we see a prophet's offer. We see the

  706. Recabites response and then we see God's

  707. pronouncement.

  708. This is what I'm trying to teach you

  709. from this message. Don't mistake it.

  710. John Calvin wrote this on this section.

  711. His council is not commended but

  712. obedience which his sons rendered to

  713. him. So Jeremiah is not recommending

  714. that everybody become a recite and do

  715. what they do. He is pointing out their

  716. obedience

  717. versus the nation's

  718. disobedience.

  719. You obeyed a mortal man but you won't

  720. you disobey.

  721. They obeyed a mortal man, but you

  722. disobey a living God.

  723. So that's the picture. I hope we get it

  724. because it's very very important. Um,

  725. so Johnab didn't want them tied to

  726. property because of the idolatrous uh

  727. nature of the nation and so he made them

  728. be not connected so much with everybody

  729. around him.

  730. Now the main lesson is what

  731. they obeyed a mortal man, an imperfect

  732. man

  733. with a little bit stricter conditions

  734. than you would expect.

  735. God's people wouldn't obey him.

  736. God was wanted allowed him to live in

  737. the land. God allowed him to drink

  738. alcohol was a different content and

  739. percentages, but they did. It was real

  740. wine. He he he allowed them to build

  741. houses and build a family farm. It was a

  742. good life. But they disobeyed.

  743. And the point is God is not regarded by

  744. his people the way Jonadab was regarded

  745. by his children and grandchildren and

  746. great grandchildren.

  747. Let's turn to Isaiah. There's an even

  748. greater

  749. example than this. If you go to the

  750. prophet Isaiah, hold your place in

  751. Jeremiah. This one really gets me.

  752. Jeremiah Isaiah starts off with this.

  753. Isaiah chapter 1.

    Isaiah 1 chapter mention

  754. I hope you love the book of Isaiah. I

  755. do. And notice how it starts.

  756. The vision of Isaiah the son of Amos

  757. which he saw concerning Judah and

  758. Jerusalem in the days of Uzziah Jotham

  759. Ahaz Hezekiah king of Judah. Hear O

  760. heavens. Isaiah 1:2.

    Isaiah 1:2

  761. And give ear for the Lord has spoken.

  762. I've nourished and brought up children

  763. and they've rebelled against me.

  764. You think you got problems with your

  765. kids? Listen to this. I've I've I've

  766. raised and brought up ch I've nourished

  767. and brought up children. They've

  768. rebelled against me.

  769. And then he says, "The ox knows his

  770. owner and the ass his master's crib,

  771. but Israel does not know. My people do

  772. not consider.

  773. Animals know who feeds them.

  774. Animals know who feeds them. Animals

  775. have respect and even affection for

  776. those who feed them. The ox does. The

  777. dumb ox. He knows. He's saying, "You

  778. people are dumber than an ox." The ass

  779. knows his owner. They know where their

  780. food comes from. They know who's taking

  781. care of them. But my people don't know.

  782. You're dumber than donkeys. You're

  783. dumber than than oxen. You You people

  784. are really thickheaded. That's what he's

  785. saying.

  786. You don't know.

  787. I want to tell you the animals in my

  788. house know who feeds them.

  789. They know.

  790. And I'm sure it's the same thing in your

  791. house. You feed an animal one time and

  792. you're on a different level with them.

  793. On a different level.

  794. My my son moved has been living with us

  795. for a while, but uh uh when he moved in

  796. with his dog, that dog didn't want

  797. anything to do with me. I confess I

  798. bribed it with cheese.

  799. I did it. And once I did that, I'm on a

  800. different level. I can't call that real

  801. love. I know that. I bribed him with

  802. cheese. I understand what happened,

  803. but you know, I'm allergic to dogs. I'm

  804. allergic to cats, but we got a whole zoo

  805. in our house.

  806. But but the do the animals know who

  807. feeds them. They know who takes care of

  808. them. They know.

  809. But my people don't know.

  810. That's that's convicting to me.

  811. How do we treat God?

  812. How do we do are do are do are do are do

  813. are do are do are do are do are do are do are we so thankful

  814. are we thankful to our creator the way

  815. animals are to us?

  816. That's a

  817. that's a shocking that's a shocking uh

  818. exposure of the unnaturalenness

  819. of sin.

  820. And he says, "Ah, verse four, sinful

  821. nation, a people laden with iniquity, a

  822. seed of evildoers, children that are

  823. corruptors. They've forsaken the Lord.

  824. They provoked the Holy One of Israel to

  825. anger. They've gone away backward." You

  826. want to know where backslid is? There it

  827. is. They've gone away backward. Why

  828. should you be stricken anymore? You will

  829. revolt more and more. The whole head is

  830. sick, the whole heart faint. From the

  831. soul of the foot, even to the head,

  832. there's no soundness in us, but wombs,

  833. bruises, putrifying sores. They've not

  834. been closed, neither bound up, neither

  835. mullified with ointment. Obviously, God

  836. sees a big problem there.

  837. It's very similar. You're not acting

  838. like you. You're not acting normal.

  839. Animals are better than you.

  840. They know who feeds them. You don't

  841. know.

  842. And so, how many times has God blessed

  843. you in a way, maybe a surprise?

  844. You had a big bill coming and then you

  845. all of a sudden there's some surprise

  846. income that came from an a direction you

  847. didn't even know about.

  848. God is so good to us.

  849. How many things has God got us through?

  850. And the whole point is God is less

  851. regarded by his people than Jonadab was

  852. by his posterity.

  853. And that's not a good thing.

  854. So

  855. God God notices it.

  856. He notices it.

  857. And Johnab knew that humility and

  858. contentment and obscurity was often a

  859. best policy in times of great apostasy

  860. and idolatry.

  861. Now, we can take man's tradition and

  862. obey them more than the commandments of

  863. men. Jesus taught on that. You're taking

  864. the traditions of men and putting them

  865. up above the commandments of God.

  866. Matthew 15, Mark 7, those kind of

  867. things.

  868. Uh, the unsaved can be very jealous,

  869. zealous for tradition. But the point is

  870. not the animals or the unsaved and their

  871. traditions. The point is this. They're

  872. loyal to someone less than me. You're

  873. not loyal to me. That's the picture.

  874. Alexander McLaren, the Baptist pastor,

  875. said, "The opinion of the the the the

  876. click, the dogmas of a sect, the habits

  877. of a set, the sayings of a favorite

  878. author, the fashions of our class. These

  879. rule men with a sway far more absolute

  880. than is exercised in them by the known

  881. will of God. We got to do it this way

  882. because we've always done it this way.

  883. We got to do it this way because the

  884. pastor, three pastors back did it that

  885. way. That locks people in. That could be

  886. a bad thing. But loyalty is a good

  887. thing. But we don't want to be more

  888. loyal to the commandments of men than we

  889. are to the commandments of God.

  890. Ultimately, the Bible is our final

  891. authority, right? Not Pastor Hixon, not

  892. what we because we've always done it

  893. this way. The abiding fact is God's

  894. word.

  895. And so, um, think about all the things

  896. churches do. In my day, you weren't

  897. allowed to eat fish on Friday.

  898. Some of you are old enough to remember

  899. that.

  900. And as an unspiritual person in high

  901. school, I would date Catholic girls and

  902. take them to or take them to McDonald's

  903. on Friday. That was before they sold

  904. fish.

  905. That's terrible, isn't it? They'd order

  906. French fries.

  907. So that was a cheap date for me.

  908. But think about when you are when you

  909. are um following man's tradition

  910. even in it's not just the Catholics that

  911. do that. Some Protestant churches, some

  912. uh fundamental churches have their

  913. traditions that you dare not break.

  914. Don't cross the line on that.

  915. And

  916. they're not If they could just submit to

  917. the word of God. Just submit to the word

  918. of God. Just be sensitive to the word of

  919. God. If God's word says it, no matter if

  920. you've ever done it that if it cuts

  921. against your most dear thing, God said

  922. it. I believe it. That settles it. God

  923. give us insight to read our Bible that

  924. way.

  925. And to submit to his word that way,

  926. respect to the past itself, it can be

  927. valuable, but the present can be harmed

  928. by a misguided loyalty to the past.

  929. Right? It's possible.

  930. But we should learn by people who are

  931. loyal to this tradition or that

  932. tradition.

  933. I want to be faithful to God's word.

  934. I want to be submissive to God's word. I

  935. want it to tell me how to live. I want

  936. it to show me what to do.

  937. And so very important.

  938. I hope that this has been a challenge to

  939. us. Everybody has their traditions,

  940. don't they? I was reading about the

  941. Hell's Angels. They they ride those

  942. bikes. The Hell's Angel club average

  943. 12,000 miles a year. They're nomadic.

  944. Did you know they have traditions, very

  945. important traditions to them,

  946. and they they expect you to uh follow

  947. those traditions or they're not

  948. interested in you. You get in trouble

  949. right away. Well, how can how come a

  950. bike club can be more loyal to tradition

  951. than we can be to the word of God?

  952. And very important for us to be

  953. submissive to the word of God. Charles

  954. Fineberg said on this, the contrast to

  955. the obedience of the Recoites with the

  956. disobedience of Judah, the episode is a

  957. rebuke to the nation for their

  958. unfaithfulness to God. They were a they

  959. the Recoites were a separatist group

  960. stemming from Jonadab in 840 BC

  961. and uh

  962. desiring to return to simplicity of

  963. nomadic life. They banned all sedendary

  964. occupations.

  965. Don't stay in the land. Keep on the

  966. move. Can't have gardens. Therefore, you

  967. can't have grapes and therefore you

  968. can't have wine. That's the picture.

  969. Um, Philip Reichen, the Presbyterian

  970. uh,

  971. pastor and now I think I believe he's

  972. president of the Wheaten College. He

  973. said, "Like the Amish, they separated

  974. themselves from the pleasures of popular

  975. culture."

  976. And the Recoit way of life had been out

  977. of fashion in Israel since the day

  978. Joshua crossed the Jordan River. In

  979. other words, they were supposed to

  980. settle down biblically.

  981. But they chose this because of the

  982. idolatry.

  983. And he said Christians are to be

  984. different. They keep their promises to

  985. their own detriment. Christians are to

  986. be different. We keep our word and we

  987. keep the promises. And he he he he uh

  988. illustrated this by Booker T. Washington

  989. who recounted uh a wonderful uh uh in

  990. incident about a promisekeeper. He was

  991. an ex-slave in Virginia. This man was an

  992. ex-slave and he made a contract with his

  993. master two or three years before the

  994. Emancipation Proclamation to the effect

  995. that that's the slaves would be uh

  996. permitted to buy themsel out. And you

  997. know, he kept the contract. He didn't

  998. have to. He didn't have to. He just kept

  999. working. He he agreed for so much and he

1000. went down to Virginia, paid off what he

1001. owed the guy and and left.

1002. And uh and Reiken said Washington's

1003. friend sounds like a long lost

1004. descendant of Rayab or maybe he was just

  1005. a Christian.

1006. Um may God help us to keep our

1007. agreements as much as we can. And I know

1008. that life's hard. Sometimes you get in

1009. situations where it becomes almost

1010. impossible to do that. But we should be

1011. people of our word. We should be people

1012. that do what we say we're going to do as

1013. much even if it's at cost to oursel. Uh

1014. and of course we know there's a tyranny

1015. of tradition and we don't want to be

1016. under that. And uh uh G. Campbell Morgan

1017. said uh he says there's some

1018. illustrations of how men are under the

1019. tra tyranny of tradition, the power of

1020. precedent and the grip of a dead hand.

1021. We've always done it that way. Tyranny

1022. of tradition or the power of precedent.

  1023. We've already set a precedent. We're not

1024. going to break it. Or the grip of a dead

1025. hand. Somebody that was dead told us to

1026. do this and we're not changing.

1027. Sometimes that's the right thing to do.

1028. Sometimes that's the wrong thing to do.

1029. And uh God help us to know the

  1030. difference.

1031. I hope that that's helpful. Uh and uh I

1032. want you to notice in this chapter the

1033. word land is used in verse 9, verse 11,

1034. and verse 15. You watch that word land.

1035. It's all about that in uh and uh that's

1036. part of what's going on in this whole

1037. section. Well, we're going to continue

1038. to work on Jeremiah. We are also and

1039. probably this Wednesday we're going to

1040. not be in Jeremiah I think and we're

1041. going to we've been doing the premill a

1042. mill thing and we're working on that and

1043. uh uh I've already give you some

  1044. information about the premillennial

  1045. position

1046. on the millennium and uh we're probably

1047. going to go to the a mill position and

1048. talk about that. Okay. To educate

  1049. ourselves.

1050. Uh not doing the post mill. It's not

1051. that relevant to church history. But the

1052. aail position is a big one. We're going

1053. to look how that started. We've already

1054. looked at that. That the earliest church

1055. fathers were premill. No question.

1056. Nobody even denies that. Even the Als

  1057. don't deny that.

1058. And by the church fathers, I mean the

1059. people who lived after the apostles.

1060. We've already dealt with that in the

1061. previous class, but what I want to do is

1062. talk about the amaloism and how it

1063. started and we'll learn a little bit

  1064. more about origin

1065. Bible teacher at that time and we'll

1066. learn a little bit about Augustine.

1067. Those were wonderfully powerfully very

1068. very diligent scholars very powerful men

1069. but actually omalism started by them and

1070. they weren't inspired men they were just

1071. intelligent men and uh and so it began

1072. there and we need we need to know some

1073. of these things it's very helpful church

1074. history can be helpful to us to

1075. understand stuff and you can't

1076. understand church history if you don't

1077. understand on the limb ism because that

1078. started an awful lot of things.

1079. The state church idea in Europe

1080. and all the wars in Europe, the

1081. religious wars and a whole bunch of

  1082. other stuff

1083. and merging uh the church and the

1084. kingdom uh might have been consistent

1085. for some things, but it was disastrous

1086. for others. And we're going to look at

1087. that. And remember, there's very many

1088. very good allmale Christians. Some of

1089. them are sitting here right now. I know.

1090. So, so I'm not out to I'm not out to rip

1091. somebody. I'm simply out to explain the

1092. word as we see it. And it's helpful when

1093. we are doing this. And this is the place

1094. to do it because the new covenant is

1095. mentioned right in these chapters. These

  1096. are the chapters. Chapters 30, 31, 32,

1097. 33, 34. This is all new covenant stuff.

1098. And 35 was part of that. And actually 36

1099. next week whenever we get to back to

  1100. Jeremiah

1101. was a king who dared to burn the Bible.

  1102. He cut it up

1103. and then he burned it.

1104. The original book of Jeremiah was cut up

1105. and burned by a theocratic king.

1106. And we'll look at that in chapter 36.

1107. and you'll see what happened to that

  1108. guy.

1109. And it's very interesting how God dealt

  1110. with that

1111. that situation. And that guy was a

1112. descendant of King David. He went way

1113. back. He certainly wasn't acting like he

1114. and God's judgment came down on him very

1115. hard. So, we're going to look at that

1116. one after we look at that. That will

1117. either be Wednesday or it'll be next

1118. Sunday night. One of those two we'll be

1119. working on. Father, we thank you for

1120. what we have been hearing tonight. Help

  1121. us to be sensitive

1122. to your most holy word.

1123. May we amend our lives to revelation.

1124. May we may we we have the motalistic

1125. way, but in a a way of loving submission

1126. and recognition of your authority over

1127. us as a church and as an individual.

1128. Whether you're dealing with us about our

1129. personal life or our family life or our

1130. church life or what we're supposed to be

1131. doing or what we're not supposed to be

  1132. doing,

1133. the entrance of your word brings life

  1134. and light.

1135. And so, Father, may the light of your

1136. word be always over us and may it we

1137. always be following it even when it cost

1138. us in Jesus name. Amen. Amen. You'll

1139. stand and turn to page 120.

  1140. 120

  1141. loving you more,

  1142. trusting you more.

1143. May the power of your love and the light

  1144. of your word shine

1145. to a sin darkened world.

1146. As we go from this place,
