  1. Well, have you ever been invited over to someone's house for dinner, but maybe you wondered

  2. ! why you were even invited, because things between you and them haven't been great. Maybe

  3. ! there's been conflict between you and them or tension in the relationship. And part

  4. of you doesn't even want to go, but then maybe part of you is hopeful that with this next

  5. connection, things will be better than last time. This morning, as we return to the story

  6. of Jesus, we find him in a place that we might not expect him to be. He's at the home of a

  7. prominent Pharisee. And we heard just last week about how the Pharisee said to Jesus,

  8. leave this place, go somewhere else. So it's kind of surprising that now he's been invited

  9. over to the house of a Pharisee for dinner. And with the tension between them, amazingly,

  10. Jesus goes to this Pharisee's house. Last time he went to the home of a Pharisee, things didn't

  11. go well. We read about it in Luke chapter 11. Jesus sat down at the table to eat in the

    Luke 11 chapter mention

  12. home. And the Pharisees were judging Jesus right out of the get-go because he didn't do

  13. a certain ceremonial washing before the meal. And from there, Jesus began to rebuke the Pharisees,

  14. saying they were full of greed and wickedness and hypocrisy, that they were hindering people and

  15. they were leading people astray. And that meal ended with Jesus walking out the door and then

  16. the Pharisees swarming him with all kinds of attacking questions. And so we can only imagine

  17. and wonder what Jesus might be feeling as he gets another invitation to go to the house of a Pharisee.

  18. Let's listen in as Luke tells the story in Luke chapter 14, beginning in verse 1.

    Luke 14 chapter mention

  19. One Sabbath, when Jesus went to eat in the house of a prominent Pharisee, he was being carefully watched.

  20. Already, we feel the tension, don't we? First of all, it's the Sabbath day, and we know that that has

  21. been an issue. It's come up many times already. Maybe you remember Jesus walking along with his

  22. disciples and his disciples picking grain in the fields and the Pharisees saying,

  23. why are you doing what's unlawful on the Sabbath? We also heard about it back in chapter 6.

  24. They were ready to accuse Jesus of working on the Sabbath day when he healed the man with the

  25. shriveled hand. We skipped over this in chapter 13, but not too long ago, Jesus was teaching in the

  26. synagogue on the Sabbath day and he healed a crippled woman. And Luke tells us there that the

  27. Pharisees were indignant because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath. The synagogue leader said,

  28. there are six days for work. So come and be healed on those days, not on the Sabbath.

  29. So here we are now in Luke chapter 14, and again, it's the Sabbath day. And Luke says that they are

    Luke 14 chapter mention

  30. watching Jesus closely. No doubt some of them are gathered here and they're ready to find fault

  31. with Jesus. As we'll see next week, at least one guy at the table might have a softer heart.

  32. There in front of Jesus was a man suffering from abnormal swelling of his body.

  33. We almost wonder if this has been planned or a setup. Did they invite this guy just for the purpose of

  34. seeing if Jesus would heal him so that they could accuse him of working on the Sabbath? Maybe.

  35. We don't know. The main thing we know about this man is his condition. Luke says he's suffering from

  36. abnormal swelling of his body. The word used here specifically refers to dropsy, what we now call

  37. edema. Basically, it refers to excess fluid building up in parts of your body.

  38. And what we know about this today is it has lots of different causes. The swelling itself is not a

  39. disease. It's a symptom of something else that's not right in the body. Could be something very

  40. serious like a problem with the kidneys or the liver or the lungs or even the heart. It could also be a

  41. temporary or minor thing that shows up sometimes in pregnancy for women or in a situation where someone

  42. is in the same position for a really long time. For this man, we don't know the cause. We don't know

  43. the severity. Probably it was severe enough to be visible to everyone and noticeable by everyone

  44. there. And here's this guy right in front of Jesus in the house of the Pharisee.

  45. Jesus asked the Pharisees and experts in the law, is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath or not?

  46. But they remained silent.

  47. They wouldn't answer his question.

  48. They couldn't answer the question. It's a very simple question.

  49. Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath? Yes or no? Is it against God's law to do this on the Sabbath day?

  50. That's all Jesus is asking.

  51. The Sabbath commandment that God gave to the people of Israel long ago was that they should do no work on the Sabbath day.

  52. They were to take one day in six to rest.

  53. And it was a rest from the work that you would do to provide for your family, but also the work of the household.

  54. They were to take the day before, Friday, to make all their preparations.

  55. And then Saturday, the seventh day, could be a day of rest to the Lord.

  56. And so it's a very simple question.

  57. Is a person breaking that commandment by healing someone on the Sabbath day?

  58. And they wouldn't answer it.

  59. They couldn't answer it.

  60. Let's think for just a moment what answers they could have given.

  61. The first option they could say, well, yeah, of course it's lawful.

  62. Why wouldn't it be permitted to heal a person on the Sabbath day?

  63. But did they actually believe that?

  64. We don't know.

  65. Were some of them truly unsure?

  66. Like we don't know, maybe.

  67. But did they know deep down inside?

  68. Yeah.

  69. That's something that you can do on the Sabbath day, probably.

  70. They were unwilling to say, yeah, that's lawful.

  71. And I think the reason why is because then they'd be agreeing with Jesus that as he's been going around and healing people on the Sabbath,

  72. they'd be agreeing that that's good.

  73. That's right.

  74. And they don't want to endorse or affirm Jesus in any way.

  75. The other option they had, of course, they could have just said no.

  76. It's not lawful to heal on the Sabbath.

  77. That goes against what God has commanded.

  78. But then the problem with that answer is if they really believed it, that would make them seem pretty heartless.

  79. Pretty lacking in compassion towards those suffering or in need of urgent medical help.

  80. There were already many crowds of thousands surrounding Jesus.

  81. And the last thing they wanted to do was to lose even more influence and favor with the people.

  82. And so they chose to remain silent.

  83. And so what does Jesus do?

  84. He heals the man.

  85. So taking hold of the man, he healed him and sent him on his way.

  86. It's almost surprising how little Luke says about the miracle here.

  87. I mean, this is awesome.

  88. He miraculously cures the man of his swelling right in front of their eyes.

  89. But this isn't the main thing in the passage.

  90. I mean, imagine what it would have been like.

  91. I don't know what part of his body, whether his leg or his arms or what,

  92. but imagine what it would have been like to just watch that swelling disappear in that moment.

  93. And you can imagine the guy that was healed and just the stunned look on his face as he, you know,

  94. feels that skin and no more squishiness.

  95. It's the swelling is gone.

  96. It's back to normal.

  97. Luke doesn't say a word about that.

  98. Jesus has already healed so many countless numbers of people.

  99. And Luke's already described these kinds of things more than once.

  100. What's at the focus here is Jesus and the Pharisees.

  101. After healing the man, Jesus asks another question.

  102. Verse 5.

  103. Then he asked them,

  104. If one of you has a child or an ox that falls into a well on the Sabbath day,

  105. will you not immediately pull it out?

  106. Another very simple question.

  107. If your son, or maybe you don't have a son,

  108. then if your ox,

  109. if your son falls into a well on the Sabbath day,

  110. will you not immediately pull him out?

  111. And they had nothing to say.

  112. Again, the same options are before them.

  113. They could have said,

  114. Well, yeah, I would pull my son out if he fell into a well on the Sabbath day.

  115. But then, what would Jesus say in response?

  116. Why shouldn't I be helping and healing these people on the Sabbath day then?

  117. What's the difference?

  118. Or I guess they could have said,

  119. No, I'd leave my son in the well on the Sabbath day till the next day

  120. to honor the commandment.

  121. But then deep down inside,

  122. I think they probably all knew that's not what they would do.

  123. I mean, is God that heartless

  124. that he would expect us to ignore the injury of the person right in front of us

  125. to avoid doing work on the Sabbath?

  126. And if they did say,

  127. Yeah, yeah, I'd do that.

  128. I wouldn't lift a finger to get him out of there on the Sabbath.

  129. I'd wait till tomorrow.

  130. I mean, how would that look to the people?

  131. That would kind of show the true colors of the Pharisees, wouldn't it?

  132. That they really are heartless.

  133. They really do lack love and compassion.

  134. And so again, they decide to say nothing.

  135. They had nothing to say.

  136. And what's masterful about this question that Jesus asks is that it really,

  137. no matter what they do,

  138. what they answer,

  139. it exposes them.

  140. It shows what's really going on in their hearts

  141. and in their thoughts.

  142. Because even refusing to answer the question,

  143. I mean, it shows that they're heartless.

  144. That they're lacking in compassion.

  145. That they're overly concerned with what everybody else thinks.

  146. I mean, Jesus just asks a room full of people,

  147. If one of you has a child that falls into a well on the Sabbath day,

  148. will you not immediately pull him out?

  149. And nobody in the room could bring themselves to say,

  150. Yeah, I would.

  151. This is what was wrong with the Pharisees

  152. and the experts in the law.

  153. Their devotion to God was not authentic.

  154. It wasn't sincere.

  155. They were all about putting on that religious show

  156. for others to see.

  157. Keeping the laws and the commandments outwardly

  158. when people were watching.

  159. But there was very little love for God

  160. and there was very little love for other people

  161. in their hearts.

  162. Theirs was a religion of ritual

  163. and ceremony

  164. and religious habit

  165. they did not have a real relationship with God.

  166. As Jesus said,

  167. they were truly wicked

  168. on the inside.

  169. They polished the outside

  170. to make their words

  171. and their actions look good.

  172. But on the inside,

  173. Jesus said they're filthy

  174. and wicked

  175. and greedy

  176. and the list goes on.

  177. They couldn't even bring themselves

  178. to say out loud

  179. at the dinner table,

  180. Yeah, I would pull my son

  181. out of the well

  182. if he fell in there

  183. on the Sabbath day.

  184. Because saying that

  185. would affirm

  186. that Jesus has been doing right.

  187. He has been doing good

  188. when he heals people

  189. on the Sabbath.

  190. This wasn't a trick question.

  191. There was a clear right answer.

  192. And if they really were experts in the law,

  193. they should have been able to answer this easily.

  194. Maybe some of them knew the right answer

  195. deep down inside

  196. and yet the stubbornness

  197. in their hearts.

  198. I'm not going to give Jesus

  199. the satisfaction

  200. of agreeing with him.

  201. Well, it's one thing

  202. for us to sort of look at this

  203. and analyze the Pharisees

  204. and understand

  205. the problem with them.

  206. But if this is to be

  207. any benefit to us today,

  208. here and now,

  209. we have to think about

  210. how does it relate to us.

  211. We live in a very different

  212. cultural moment

  213. than we see in this passage.

  214. The majority of people

  215. in our community

  216. don't even bother

  217. to put up

  218. a religious front

  219. anymore.

  220. I mean,

  221. there are some communities

  222. and there are some churches still

  223. where that's,

  224. they're the exception

  225. and rules and traditions

  226. are very strictly followed

  227. and how you follow them

  228. and keep them

  229. becomes the measure

  230. of righteousness

  231. even if your heart

  232. is cold towards God.

  233. But for most people

  234. in our community today,

  235. we just don't see

  236. too much of this problem

  237. of pretending

  238. to be devoted to God

  239. but in a hypocritical way.

  240. And so probably

  241. the more important question

  242. that we can ask

  243. is the question

  244. that we should ask the Lord.

  245. Lord,

  246. am I

  247. in any way

  248. like the Pharisees here?

  249. What things have I been doing

  250. that fall into

  251. that same sort of

  252. category?

  253. Maybe it's how we pray.

  254. Do we really only pray

  255. out of routine?

  256. perhaps

  257. before the meal

  258. or when called upon

  259. by someone else

  260. to pray

  261. before bed

  262. and

  263. is my heart

  264. really engaged

  265. in that prayer?

  266. As though I'm speaking

  267. to God

  268. or am I just

  269. saying the same old things,

  270. parroting the same things?

  271. God is gracious,

  272. God is good,

  273. let us thank Him

  274. for this food,

  275. amen.

  276. without even thinking

  277. about what I'm saying anymore.

  278. Or is it time

  279. to pray

  280. for some

  281. people?

  282. Okay,

  283. Father,

  284. please

  285. bless and be with

  286. and bless and be with

  287. and bless and be with

  288. and bless and be with

  289. and bless and be with,

  290. amen.

  291. We can be like

  292. the Pharisees

  293. sometimes.

  294. We can slip

  295. into that.

  296. Maybe it's in

  297. how we go to church

  298. or we just,

  299. you know,

  300. coming on Sundays

  301. because I have to

  302. to be a good Christian.

  303. That's my Christian duty.

  304. There's lots of other things

  305. I could be doing

  306. and I maybe think about them

  307. all throughout the service

  308. but if I miss

  309. or if I attend less,

  310. I mean,

  311. what will people think?

  312. My spouse really wants me

  313. to be here

  314. or my parents

  315. said that I have to come.

  316. but my heart

  317. isn't in it.

  318. We can be like

  319. the Pharisees.

  320. Maybe it's in how

  321. we read our Bible.

  322. Am I,

  323. you know,

  324. just opening it up

  325. to check off the box

  326. in my reading plan

  327. and feel good

  328. that I'm doing

  329. what Christians

  330. are supposed to do?

  331. Or as we talked about

  332. last week in Sunday school,

  333. am I opening it up

  334. in order to draw near

  335. to God

  336. and to hear His voice

  337. speak to me?

  338. Is my heart

  339. ready to respond

  340. to whatever He would say?

  341. Is my heart engaged

  342. as I do these things?

  343. Am I doing these things

  344. for you, Lord?

  345. To seek after you,

  346. to be with you,

  347. to be obedient to you.

  348. Lord,

  349. would you expose

  350. the Pharisee

  351. in me?

  352. Do you have the faith

  353. and the guts

  354. to pray that prayer?

  355. Lord,

  356. would you expose

  357. the Pharisee

  358. in me?

  359. Well,

  360. this isn't the end

  361. of the meal yet.

  362. Jesus hasn't left yet.

  363. They haven't driven

  364. Him out yet.

  365. And so Jesus

  366. continues on

  367. and He exposes

  368. more in the Pharisees.

  369. Let's look at verse 7.

  370. When Jesus noticed

  371. how the guests

  372. picked the places

  373. of honor at the table,

  374. He told them

  375. this parable.

  376. When someone invites

  377. you to a wedding feast,

  378. do not take

  379. the place of honor,

  380. for a person

  381. more distinguished

  382. than you

  383. may have been invited.

  384. If so,

  385. the host

  386. who invited

  387. both of you

  388. will come

  389. and say to you,

  390. give this person

  391. your seat.

  392. Then humiliated,

  393. you will have to

  394. take the least

  395. important place.

  396. But when you

  397. are invited,

  398. take the lowest

  399. place,

  400. so that when

  401. your host comes,

  402. he will say to you,

  403. friend,

  404. move up

  405. to a better place.

  406. Then you will be

  407. honored in the

  408. presence of all

  409. the other guests.

  410. For all those

  411. who exalt themselves

  412. will be humbled.

  413. And those who

  414. humble themselves

  415. will be exalted.

  416. So Luke says

  417. that the people

  418. that were invited

  419. to this meal,

  420. Jesus took notice

  421. of how they

  422. went and found

  423. their seats.

  424. He was watching

  425. and he noticed

  426. how some of them

  427. went for the

  428. places of honor.

  429. We don't get

  430. all the details,

  431. but you could

  432. almost imagine

  433. that there's a bit

  434. of a rush

  435. or a scurry

  436. to those

  437. better seats

  438. in the house,

  439. the seats

  440. of greater honor.

  441. This is kind of

  442. foreign in our

  443. culture today.

  444. I mean,

  445. if you think

  446. at your table

  447. at home right now,

  448. do you think

  449. of one seat

  450. or another seat

  451. as having more

  452. honor than another?

  453. Probably not.

  454. But maybe

  455. if we think

  456. about a wedding,

  457. we still have

  458. a sort of a,

  459. you know,

  460. we've got the

  461. head table

  462. and if we have

  463. arranged seating

  464. at the wedding,

  465. maybe you've been

  466. to a wedding

  467. that had arranged

  468. seating,

  469. sort of the closer

  470. your relationship

  471. to the bride or groom,

  472. the closer you get

  473. to sit to them.

  474. Of course,

  475. the best seats

  476. at the wedding

  477. go to the maid

  478. of honor

  479. and the best man.

  480. They get to sit

  481. right beside

  482. the bride and the groom

  483. on their special day.

  484. But that doesn't

  485. happen very often.

  486. Most of our meals

  487. in our houses,

  488. even at the community,

  489. town hall,

  490. they come and go

  491. and sit where you please.

  492. But back in this day

  493. and in this culture,

  494. where you sat at the table

  495. mattered a little bit more.

  496. The seats on the left

  497. and the right of the host

  498. were considered

  499. the seats of honor.

  500. And those seats

  501. that were a little closer

  502. to the host

  503. were considered

  504. seats of honor.

  505. And what catches

  506. Jesus' attention here

  507. is how some of the guests

  508. just sort of make

  509. a beeline

  510. for those seats

  511. and they rush

  512. to take them

  513. before someone else

  514. gets there.

  515. Once in a while,

  516. we do see this kind

  517. of behavior in public.

  518. Could be at the grocery store

  519. as we watch people

  520. sort of push their way

  521. past everybody else

  522. in the line

  523. and ask if they can

  524. go first.

  525. Could be at a sale

  526. or a giveaway

  527. or in the waiting room

  528. at the doctors.

  529. And probably for us,

  530. though,

  531. it's less about honor

  532. and it's more just

  533. about being first

  534. and not wanting

  535. to have to wait

  536. for our turn.

  537. And Jesus,

  538. he gives them

  539. a little wisdom

  540. in the form

  541. of a parable here.

  542. I'm not going to

  543. explain every detail

  544. because I think

  545. it speaks for itself.

  546. He basically

  547. poses the question,

  548. isn't it better

  549. not to assume

  550. that you're

  551. the guest of honor

  552. by pushing your way

  553. to that best seat?

  554. I mean,

  555. do you know

  556. who all has been invited?

  557. Maybe somebody

  558. more distinguished

  559. than you

  560. has been invited,

  561. a closer friend

  562. or family member.

  563. And think about

  564. what's likely

  565. to happen in that case.

  566. I mean,

  567. if the host

  568. of the banquet

  569. sees their best friend

  570. come in the door

  571. and the only seat

  572. that's left open

  573. is way at the far end

  574. of the table,

  575. he's going to look

  576. at who's sitting

  577. next to him

  578. and give him the bump.

  579. He's going to ask you

  580. if you might be willing

  581. to give up that seat

  582. to his best friend

  583. and then the only seat

  584. left will be

  585. that one

  586. that's furthest away.

  587. The best friend

  588. will be honored

  589. in front of everyone

  590. by the host

  591. and you will be humiliated

  592. as you make your way

  593. to the worst seat.

  594. And so Jesus

  595. gives them

  596. some wise advice.

  597. Verse 10,

  598. he says,

  599. but when you're invited,

  600. take the lowest place

  601. so that when your host

  602. comes,

  603. he will say to you,

  604. friend,

  605. move up to a better place.

  606. then you will be honored

  607. in the presence

  608. of all the other guests.

  609. Now there's a right way

  610. to take these words

  611. in a wrong way.

  612. Jesus is not saying,

  613. you know,

  614. here's a great trick

  615. that you can do

  616. to get more attention

  617. and praise

  618. and honor for yourself.

  619. You know,

  620. take the lowest seat

  621. on purpose

  622. so that you end up

  623. getting asked

  624. to move up

  625. and then you'll get

  626. the praise that you do.

  627. No,

  628. he's not saying that.

  629. It's not a party trick

  630. to get more attention

  631. for proud people.

  632. The right way

  633. to take this

  634. is to realize

  635. what Jesus means

  636. by the whole parable.

  637. He's saying,

  638. don't be proud.

  639. Don't assume

  640. that you are

  641. the most important

  642. compared to others.

  643. Because if you do,

  644. it's just a matter of time

  645. before you find yourself

  646. publicly humiliated.

  647. As the ancient proverb

  648. in the book

  649. of Proverbs goes,

  650. pride goes before

  651. destruction

  652. and a haughty spirit

  653. before a fall.

  654. And so take the lowest seat

  655. means humble yourself.

  656. Don't assume

  657. that you're the most important.

  658. Sincerely consider others

  659. as more important

  660. than yourself.

  661. Let them have

  662. the better seats.

  663. I'm not going

  664. to take that seat

  665. because I want you

  666. to enjoy it.

  667. You be closer

  668. to the host.

  669. I'm not going

  670. to push my way

  671. to the front of the line

  672. because even though

  673. I feel like my time

  674. is important

  675. and my business

  676. is important,

  677. well,

  678. so is yours.

  679. Your business

  680. might be even more

  681. urgent than mine.

  682. I could rush

  683. through this door

  684. because I know

  685. that if I do,

  686. I'll get served

  687. first at the till.

  688. I won't have

  689. to wait as long

  690. but hold on.

  691. Let me hold

  692. the door open

  693. for you.

  694. Who says

  695. that I'm more

  696. important than you?

  697. You go ahead.

  698. I'm borrowing

  699. loosely from

  700. Pauline Phillips,

  701. the author

  702. of the Dear

  703. Abbey newspaper column.

  704. The way she said it

  705. I think is worth

  706. reflecting on

  707. something to the effect

  708. of do I walk

  709. into the room

  710. with an attitude

  711. of hey guys,

  712. here I am

  713. or do I walk

  714. into a room

  715. with an attitude

  716. of oh,

  717. there you are.

  718. Do you see yourself

  719. as the most important

  720. in the room,

  721. the wisest,

  722. the smartest,

  723. the strongest?

  724. Are you eager

  725. to share with others

  726. what you think,

  727. your opinions

  728. on things,

  729. your experiences

  730. or are you eager

  731. to hear from others

  732. about what they think

  733. and their opinions,

  734. their experiences,

  735. to learn from them?

  736. The lesson

  737. in the parable

  738. for everyone

  739. is this,

  740. verse 11,

  741. for all those

  742. who exalt themselves

  743. will be humbled

  744. and those

  745. who humble themselves

  746. will be exalted.

  747. This is just

  748. the reality

  749. of how it will be.

  750. It's how things

  751. will always

  752. eventually go.

  753. It's true

  754. when we look back

  755. through history,

  756. God sees

  757. that it goes

  758. this way.

  759. It's true

  760. when we look ahead

  761. to the future

  762. through prophecy,

  763. this is how

  764. it's all going

  765. to end

  766. with the full

  767. arrival of God's

  768. kingdom.

  769. God tells us

  770. that everything's

  771. going to be turned

  772. upside down.

  773. Those who were

  774. first,

  775. they're going

  776. to be last

  777. and those

  778. who were last,

  779. they're going

  780. to be first.

  781. The lowly

  782. will be honored

  783. by God

  784. and the proud

  785. will be humbled

  786. by God.

  787. Again,

  788. it's one thing

  789. to recognize

  790. the fault

  791. in the Pharisees.

  792. We can

  793. beat up on them

  794. for scurrying

  795. to the seats

  796. of honor,

  797. but we have

  798. to think about

  799. how does this

  800. relate to us.

  801. And again,

  802. I think the question

  803. that's most important

  804. is the one

  805. that we ask

  806. the Lord.

  807. Lord,

  808. Lord,

  809. am I in any

  810. way like the

  811. Pharisees here?

  812. What things

  813. have I been

  814. doing which

  815. sort of fall

  816. into that

  817. same mindset

  818. as they had?

  819. Have I been

  820. thinking much

  821. of myself

  822. and little

  823. of others?

  824. Am I willing

  825. to take the

  826. lowest seat

  827. or do I

  828. feel like,

  829. no,

  830. that seat

  831. should,

  832. that's better

  833. for someone

  834. else?

  835. Jesus really

  836. did set the

  837. example for us

  838. here.

  839. He was in

  840. very nature

  841. God

  842. and yet he

  843. made himself

  844. nothing

  845. and became

  846. the servant

  847. of all.

  848. He's the

  849. king,

  850. the son

  851. of God

  852. and yet he

  853. got down

  854. on his hands

  855. and knees

  856. and washed

  857. the dirt

  858. off the

  859. disciples'

  860. feet.

  861. Now we

  862. may never

  863. literally do

  864. that to

  865. another person

  866. washing their

  867. feet.

  868. We just

  869. don't really

  870. do foot

  871. washing in

  872. our culture.

  873. But how

  874. about washing

  875. the dirty

  876. dishes of

  877. another?

  878. When I'm at

  879. home with my

  880. family,

  881. what does it

  882. look like to

  883. take the

  884. lowest seat?

  885. to be

  886. humble and

  887. to serve

  888. others?

  889. Do I just

  890. walk by that

  891. piece of

  892. garbage on

  893. the floor

  894. and silently

  895. hope and

  896. expect that

  897. someone else

  898. will pick

  899. it up?

  900. Do I

  901. wrinkle my

  902. nose at

  903. the side of

  904. the toilet

  905. or the

  906. bathroom when

  907. it's become

  908. untidy yet

  909. expect someone

  910. else to

  911. clean it?

  912. Do I rush

  913. to the

  914. fridge to

  915. get the

  916. best

  917. leftovers

  918. for my

  919. lunch for

  920. tomorrow?

  921. Leaving the

  922. least desirable

  923. stuff for

  924. others in

  925. the family?

  926. Do I

  927. watch that

  928. last piece

  929. of chicken

  930. in the

  931. bowl like

  932. a hawk?

  933. And as

  934. soon as

  935. there's just

  936. one piece

  937. left,

  938. snatch it

  939. for myself?

  940. Or do I

  941. consider that

  942. someone else

  943. around the

  944. table might

  945. be just as

  946. hungry as

  947. me and

  948. desire it

  949. just as

  950. much as

  951. me?

  952. And do I

  953. sincerely

  954. offer it

  955. to them

  956. first?

  957. With a

  958. willingness to

  959. actually let

  960. them have

  961. it.

  962. This stuff

  963. of humility

  964. and pride,

  965. it isn't

  966. just abstract

  967. religious

  968. principle.

  969. I mean,

  970. it really

  971. does relate

  972. to every

  973. little detail

  974. of how we

  975. interact at

  976. home,

  977. in public,

  978. at the

  979. grocery store,

  980. line up,

  981. while driving

  982. on the

  983. road.

  984. Finally,

  985. Jesus gives

  986. another word

  987. of advice,

  988. this time to

  989. his host.

  990. Let's look at

  991. that quickly

  992. in verse 12

  993. to 14.

  994. Jesus said

  995. to his

  996. host,

  997. when you

  998. give a

  999. luncheon

  1000. or dinner,

  1001. do not

  1002. invite your

  1003. friends,

  1004. your brothers

  1005. or sisters,

  1006. your relatives

  1007. or your rich

  1008. neighbors.

  1009. If you do,

  1010. they may

  1011. invite you

  1012. back and

  1013. so you

  1014. will be

  1015. repaid.

  1016. but when

  1017. you give

  1018. a banquet,

  1019. invite the

  1020. poor,

  1021. the crippled,

  1022. the lame,

  1023. the blind,

  1024. and you

  1025. will be

  1026. blessed.

  1027. Although

  1028. they cannot

  1029. repay you,

  1030. you will

  1031. be repaid

  1032. at the

  1033. resurrection

  1034. of the

  1035. righteous.

  1036. When's

  1037. the last

  1038. time you

  1039. invited

  1040. someone over

  1041. to your

  1042. house for

  1043. a meal

  1044. who

  1045. couldn't

  1046. return

  1047. the

  1048. favor?

  1049. Pride has

  1050. a way

  1051. of blinding

  1052. us.

  1053. We kind

  1054. of just

  1055. get used

  1056. to thinking

  1057. about

  1058. ourselves

  1059. and we

  1060. stop caring

  1061. or seeing

  1062. others who

  1063. are on the

  1064. outside

  1065. looking in,

  1066. wanting to

  1067. be part of

  1068. things.

  1069. The lonely,

  1070. the orphan,

  1071. the widow,

  1072. the outcast,

  1073. those with

  1074. mental or

  1075. physical

  1076. disabilities

  1077. who are

  1078. unable to

  1079. do things

  1080. and

  1081. sometimes

  1082. we can

  1083. see them

  1084. as though

  1085. they're

  1086. just

  1087. takers.

  1088. They don't

  1089. really

  1090. contribute

  1091. or they're

  1092. just less

  1093. enjoyable to

  1094. be with.

  1095. But

  1096. humility

  1097. runs the

  1098. opposite way.

  1099. We see

  1100. them as

  1101. people

  1102. and we

  1103. realize that

  1104. we could

  1105. just as

  1106. easily be

  1107. in the

  1108. same

  1109. situation

  1110. as

  1111. them.

  1112. And maybe

  1113. God has

  1114. put me

  1115. in their

  1116. life

  1117. with means

  1118. not so I

  1119. can indulge

  1120. myself but

  1121. so that I

  1122. can meet

  1123. their needs

  1124. and be a

  1125. friend and

  1126. a brother

  1127. to them.

  1128. One of my

  1129. favorite things

  1130. when it

  1131. comes to

  1132. special

  1133. occasions like

  1134. Thanksgiving and

  1135. Christmas and

  1136. Easter, we

  1137. often do have a

  1138. big meal and

  1139. invite family and

  1140. friends over.

  1141. One of my

  1142. favorite things is

  1143. on those

  1144. occasions when

  1145. a family makes

  1146. their gathering

  1147. less comfortable

  1148. or less

  1149. predictable by

  1150. inviting someone

  1151. over who

  1152. doesn't have

  1153. family to

  1154. gather with.

  1155. Maybe

  1156. somebody who's

  1157. lonely or

  1158. an outcast or

  1159. just not

  1160. someone who

  1161. people want to

  1162. be with.

  1163. Maybe they're

  1164. going through a

  1165. really rough

  1166. time and

  1167. they're just

  1168. downcast and

  1169. it's hard to

  1170. be with them.

  1171. I've been

  1172. that person

  1173. who's been

  1174. invited over for

  1175. a Thanksgiving

  1176. weekend while

  1177. away from

  1178. family.

  1179. A poor

  1180. college student,

  1181. nothing to

  1182. contribute and

  1183. it meant the

  1184. world to me to

  1185. be welcomed into

  1186. someone else's

  1187. home and family

  1188. even just for a

  1189. weekend.

  1190. This is the

  1191. kind of thing

  1192. Jesus is

  1193. talking about.

  1194. And hey,

  1195. Thanksgiving is

  1196. just three weeks

  1197. away.

  1198. Do you think

  1199. Jesus really

  1200. means for us

  1201. to do this?

  1202. Lord, would

  1203. you show us

  1204. the Pharisee

  1205. inside of us?

  1206. we want to

  1207. be like you

  1208. Jesus.

  1209. We want to

  1210. follow your

  1211. example.

  1212. We want to

  1213. we see that

  1214. beautiful humility

  1215. that you had.

  1216. Please forgive

  1217. us of every

  1218. moment where

  1219. we have been

  1220. proud, where

  1221. we have been

  1222. like the

  1223. Pharisees and

  1224. faked it in

  1225. front of

  1226. others.

  1227. Forgive us

  1228. for those

  1229. moments where

  1230. we have just

  1231. been self

  1232. centered and

  1233. put ourselves

  1234. ahead of

  1235. everyone else.

  1236. Lord, we

  1237. pray and ask

  1238. that you would

  1239. give us

  1240. humble hearts.

  1241. Teach us

  1242. that way of

  1243. humility.

  1244. And we

  1245. ask that you

  1246. would give us

  1247. eyes to see

  1248. the poor and

  1249. the lonely and

  1250. the needy around

  1251. us right here

  1252. in Davidson.

  1253. Give us

  1254. courage to

  1255. invite them

  1256. to the table.

  1257. people.

  1258. To your name

  1259. be the glory.

  1260. Amen.

  1261. Amen.

  1262. Amen.

  1263. Amen.

  1264. Amen.
