  1. Okay. Well, good morning. Good to see

  2. you this morning. Please grab your

  3. Bibles and open them up to First

  4. Timothy. Please grab your Bibles and

  5. open them up to First Timothy. It's in

  6. the New Testament. It'll be after

  7. Thessalonians. If you find that uh First

  8. Timothy,

  9. it's a new baby going to be coming

  10. called Timothy as well. I didn't

  11. pronounce it in the Brazilian way, but

  12. there you go. Uh let's pray and ask the

  13. Lord to bless his word.

  14. Lord, we thank you for your word that we

  15. have this morning. We pray that you'd

  16. use it to speak into our hearts and

  17. lives.

  18. Help us to apply your word to our life.

  19. We pray

  20. we need you, Lord, to speak. And we

  21. trust that as we read it that this is

  22. the very word of God for our hearts, for

  23. our lives, for our souls. It is what we

  24. need. And we thank you Lord for giving

  25. it to us. Pray you'd bless it to us in

  26. Jesus precious name. Amen.

  27. So, we are going to start First Timothy

  28. this morning and I'm going to read to

  29. you our entire passage for this morning,

  30. verses 1 and two.

  31. When we're in Job, we preached seven

  32. chapters

  33. at a time almost.

  34. But in letters, sometimes you can take

  35. smaller chunks. And that's what we're

  36. going to do this morning. Verses one and

  37. two. Let us listen to the word of God. 1

    1 Timothy 1 chapter mention

  38. Timothy chapter 1 says this. Paul, an

  39. apostle of Christ Jesus,

  40. by the command of God our savior

  41. and of Jesus Christ our hope.

  42. to Timothy, my true child in the faith,

  43. grace,

  44. mercy, and peace

  45. from God the Father, and Christ Jesus

  46. our Lord.

  47. That's God's word for us this morning.

  48. And what you'll notice about this word

  49. is this word is an introduction.

  50. This word introduces us to people. And I

  51. want you for a second this morning to

  52. think about introductions.

  53. When I meet people, I am not always that

  54. good at introductions.

  55. I might be with my wife or with my

  56. family and I'll see a new person and

  57. when I go to see the new person, I'll

  58. start talking to the new person and be

  59. all really excited about the new person,

  60. but I will forget to do what? The

  61. introductions.

  62. And Steve is there as well. And he's

  63. talking about it right now because we've

  64. been walking in passage and I see a new

  65. person and I'm talking to them and I

  66. forget that Steve's even there. I forget

  67. about the introduction. And I chat and I

  68. chat and I chat and they go and Steve

  69. would be like, "Be nice if you'd

  70. introduce me.

  71. I forget about the introductions and I'm

  72. bad at them." Here we have an

  73. introduction.

  74. And what can happen I think when I when

  75. I remember to do an introduction say

  76. Lanna my wife is with me it's quite

  77. important to introduce her but say I do

  78. remember which I should and I should be

  79. a good husband and a better one that I

  80. am but say I remember to introduce her.

  81. There's different ways I could introduce

  82. her. I could say something like this.

  83. Say I meet the guy and his name is

  84. David. Hi David. This is Lana.

  85. That's an introduction. It's better than

  86. no introduction than than not saying her

  87. name at all. It's good that I actually

  88. got the name out and decided to

  89. introduce her this time. But it's not

  90. really that full of an introduction, is

  91. it? I say this is Lana, but I say

  92. nothing more. I just say her name.

  93. There's another introduction that could

  94. go like this. Hi David, this is Lanna,

  95. my wife.

  96. in introductions 101. That would

  97. probably be a better way to say it. And

  98. all I need to say is this is Lana, my

  99. wife. And then the person can start to

  100. know and understand a lot more things

  101. about the person by me just adding that

  102. simple little phrase, my wife. They can

  103. conclude, well, he loves her.

  104. They can conclude he's married to her.

  105. They start asking all kinds of questions

  106. in their head. How do they meet? When do

  107. they meet? Oh, that's interesting. If

  108. they like me, they will probably try and

  109. like her. If they hate me, they might

  110. join her and try and get her to hate me,

  111. too. But the idea is this. If I say just

  112. that little bit more of a phrase, this

  113. is Lanna, my wife. It's a better

  114. introduction, and I do that with

  115. purpose.

  116. As we read this introduction here, Paul,

  117. he says names, but he adds little

  118. phrases onto each one of those names.

  119. And when he adds those little phrases

  120. onto each one of those names, we're

  121. supposed to develop a whole load of

  122. meaning behind it.

  123. So Paul, of course, he says two names.

  124. He says his own name and he says

  125. Timothy's name. And we think as we read

  126. this introduction that those are the two

  127. most important names. Well, who is Paul

  128. and who is Timothy? But actually, if you

  129. do a word count in these two verses of

  130. the names that are mentioned more, you

  131. will see that there are more important

  132. names in this introduction.

  133. Paul, he mentions himself once. So, in

  134. the word count, he gets one.

  135. Timothy, he mentions once. In the word

  136. count, he gets one. But then in this

  137. little introduction when he talks about

  138. God, how many times is God mentioned?

  139. In verse one, he's mentioned once and in

  140. verse two, he's mentioned once again.

  141. God the father is mentioned twice in

  142. these verses. And then when you look at

  143. the word count in just these two verses,

  144. Paul is mentioned once, Jesus or or uh

  145. Timothy is mentioned once, God the

  146. Father is mentioned twice, and Jesus,

  147. he's mentioned three times.

  148. in verse one and in verse two.

  149. So actually in this little introduction,

  150. yes, this introduction tells us about

  151. Paul. Yes, this introduction tells us

  152. about Timothy, but it actually does more

  153. for us than that. It tells us

  154. about God the Father and God the Son. It

  155. introduces us to God the Father and God

  156. the Son. Paul when he's writing he wants

  157. people to know that he's not writing on

  158. his own. He's writing with a view of God

  159. the father and and God the son. These

  160. are the main characters in this

  161. introduction.

  162. So what I want us to learn from this

  163. introduction as we see what Paul is

  164. writing here is I want us to learn what

  165. Christ has done for us and what God has

  166. done for us. Because we see both of

  167. those realities in this introduction not

  168. just by the names but what is added to

  169. the names. You see, when Paul gives an

  170. introduction, he gives the proper

  171. introduction by not just saying the

  172. names, but adding that little important

  173. phrase that tells us a whole lot more

  174. about the person.

  175. And so, first, what are we to remember

  176. in this this introduction? We need to

  177. remember all that Christ has done for

  178. us.

  179. And I think we see that in this reality

  180. that that Christ, he changes us.

  181. In this introduction, you see that

  182. Christ has changed Paul's life and

  183. Christ has changed Timothy's life. And

  184. we know that by the little phrase that

  185. he adds on to each of their names.

  186. Paul, Christ has changed Paul's life.

  187. Paul says this, Paul, an apostle of

  188. Christ Jesus.

  189. That's an indication that that that

  190. Christ has changed his life. He's now

  191. Paul, an apostle.

  192. And when he says apostle, that is an

  193. official title given to someone who is

  194. sent out by God. An apostle is one who

  195. is chosen personally by God and

  196. commissioned by God. An apostle is one

  197. who is an eyewitness of the

  198. resurrection. An apostle is one who

  199. establishes the foundation of the

  200. church. An apostle is one whose

  201. authority is accompanied by miracles. So

  202. what does all of that mean? There's no

  203. apostles like that today.

  204. People can call themselves apostle so

  205. and so, but there's no apostle like that

  206. today. And so when Paul says, "I'm Paul

  207. an apostle,"

  208. that gives a weight of authority.

  209. So part of what he's doing is he's

  210. establishing his authority. He's like,

  211. "I'm Paul an apostle." And he's not

  212. showing off by saying that. Sometimes in

  213. Ireland, we don't like titles because we

  214. think people are showing off by their

  215. titles. We barely call teachers teachers

  216. anymore. We want to call them by their

  217. first name.

  218. Our doctors, we don't want to call them

  219. doctors anymore. We want to call them by

  220. their first name. So, we don't really

  221. like titles.

  222. We don't really like evidences of

  223. titles. And that's true in Ireland. But

  224. then you kind of go to your your GP

  225. and when you go to your GP, what you'll

  226. notice on the wall is often they will

  227. have certificates on the wall, won't

  228. they?

  229. And in Ireland, usually we hate titles.

  230. We hate certificates. We hate people

  231. putting those things on walls. But when

  232. you go to the doctor, don't you like to

  233. see the certificates on the walls? Don't

  234. you like to see the evidence that they

  235. actually know what they're talking

  236. about? I'm like, put it all over the

  237. place. I want to see your certificates.

  238. I want to know everything about you.

  239. Even though we're in a culture that

  240. doesn't tend to like that, when I go to

  241. my GP, I want to know.

  242. So it is with Paul. He's establishing

  243. his authority by saying, "Hey, I'm an

  244. apostle."

  245. But he's not only establishing his

  246. authority, he's showing the change.

  247. You see, because if Paul was to write a

  248. letter before, he would say, "I'm Paul,

  249. a persecutor of the church."

  250. You see, when Paul says, "I'm an apostle

  251. of Christ Jesus," what's he saying? I've

  252. been changed by Jesus.

  253. I used to go out and persecute and kill

  254. Christians.

  255. I used to send myself out and I used to

  256. send others to go out and persecute

  257. Christians.

  258. Now, I'm the apostle. I'm the sent one

  259. of Christ Jesus because Jesus has

  260. changed me. So Paul's introduction an

  261. apostle tells us a lot about him that

  262. his life has been changed

  263. by Jesus Christ. And then he also

  264. introduces Timothy. He says in verse two

  265. to Timothy and he doesn't just say

  266. Timothy what does he add to the name? He

  267. says, "Timothy, my true child in the

  268. faith."

  269. You see, because before if he was

  270. writing to Timothy, he would write to

  271. Timothy and say, "Timothy, my enemy."

  272. But now he is writing to Timothy and

  273. he's saying, "Timothy, my true child."

  274. That is a special designation that Paul

  275. only gives to two people in the

  276. scriptures. He gives it to Titus in in

  277. Titus 1:4, my true child. And he also

    Titus 1:4

  278. gives it to Timothy in his first letter

  279. to Timothy in his second letter. And

  280. what true speaks of is is this

  281. genuiness.

  282. I'm like a father in the faith to you.

  283. And what he did was he he wrapped his

  284. arms around Timothy and he he brought

  285. Timothy onto his missionary team. and

  286. and in this letter, what we're going to

  287. see next week is this idea that he he

  288. sent Timothy and and called Timothy to

  289. stay in Ephesus to help pastor and

  290. protect the church. So, what he's doing

  291. in this letter is he's writing to

  292. Timothy his his true child. And he's

  293. writing in a fatherly way to help

  294. protect him.

  295. And he's his true child in the faith.

  296. Why?

  297. Because Christ has not only changed

  298. Paul,

  299. but Christ has changed Timothy.

  300. Christ changed Timothy, we find out in

  301. in second Timothy through the witness of

  302. his grandmother and mother.

  303. The witness of their faith to Timothy

  304. of Jesus

  305. changed Timothy's

  306. life.

  307. Isn't it wonderful

  308. when Jesus changes lives?

  309. Jesus came into Paul's life. If you were

  310. to look at Paul, you would say he is too

  311. far gone. There is no hope for him. Yet,

  312. this verse tells us that Jesus changed

  313. even Paul's life.

  314. And if you'd look at at Timothy's life,

  315. his grandmother and mother would have

  316. been praying for him. Isn't it amazing

  317. now that Christ has changed his life?

  318. Brothers and sisters,

  319. pray that Christ would change people's

  320. lives.

  321. Maybe there's someone like a Paul in

  322. your life and you look at them and you

  323. say, "No, no, never."

  324. And you don't bother talking to them and

  325. you don't bother praying for them

  326. because you think they're too far gone.

  327. This verse would tell us that Jesus

  328. changes lives.

  329. Maybe you're a mother or a grandmother

  330. and you think there's no way Jesus is

  331. going to change this child's life. No

  332. way.

  333. Pray.

  334. Pray for the children in this church.

  335. Pray for the children in your life.

  336. Pray that God would change their life

  337. because this is what Christ does.

  338. We have children in the womb right now

  339. in this room.

  340. pray now that Christ would change their

  341. life

  342. because this is what he does. And so we

  343. understand about Christ. If Paul is an

  344. apostle of Christ and Timothy is a true

  345. child in the faith, we understand that

  346. Christ changes lives.

  347. And secondly, we understand that Christ,

  348. he is our hope.

  349. Paul says, "Paul, an apostle of Christ

  350. Jesus, by the command of God, our

  351. savior, and of Christ Jesus, our hope."

  352. It is not only true to say that Jesus

  353. changes us. It is also true to say that

  354. Jesus, he is our hope. And you should

  355. remember that.

  356. Remember that Jesus is our hope. And

  357. when I thought of this idea of of Jesus

  358. being our hope, when I thought of this

  359. theme of hope in the scriptures,

  360. I started to study it this week and

  361. realize

  362. hope in this world

  363. is utterly hopeless.

  364. But hope in Christ, it is true and

  365. certain and sure.

  366. And that's the type of hope I want. And

  367. so then as I started to look through

  368. this theme of hope in the scriptures,

  369. I started to see the contrast between

  370. worldly hope and Christian hope. And we

  371. see that in this verse, but you also see

  372. it throughout the scriptures. The

  373. difference between worldly hope and and

  374. Christian hope. First you will see that

  375. worldly hope it is dead.

  376. But Christian hope it is living.

  377. I randomly, don't ask me how I got saw

  378. this interview, but I randomly saw an

  379. interview

  380. uh that Spider-Man was doing. Uh your

  381. man um Yeah, the the Spider-Man in the

  382. movies. Um Tom Holland. Tim Holland. Tom

  383. Holland, right? Is he the best

  384. Spider-Man? Who knows? No. Oh, we've got

  385. we've got a clear No.

  386. I saw an interview and he said this.

  387. I believe,

  388. this is not him as Spider-Man. This was

  389. him as him. He said, "I believe in

  390. manifesting.

  391. I believe in manifesting." And it's this

  392. idea really, if you want something, you

  393. just determine and in your mind you'll

  394. you'll manifest it and and one day it

  395. will end up happening.

  396. That is dead hope

  397. because all we hear in that is the

  398. success stories. Let me tell you

  399. something. There's a lot of failure

  400. stories of manifesting.

  401. And manifesting could just be this.

  402. Maybe I just had an idea that I'd do

  403. something and I worked really hard and

  404. then it happened. I don't have to

  405. pretend like, oh, I'm manifesting and

  406. somehow I'm making it happen by my

  407. thoughts. Maybe you just work hard and

  408. it happened.

  409. I call that dead hope.

  410. But Christianity, the hope of

  411. Christianity for the future, because

  412. manifesting is is future hope. But

  413. Christianity for the future is not dead

  414. hope. It is living hope. In 1 Peter 1:3,

    1 Peter 1:3

  415. it says this, "Blessed be the God and

  416. father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  417. According to his great mercy, he has

  418. caused us to be born again to a living

  419. hope.

  420. through the resurrection of Christ Jesus

  421. from the dead. And as we look at this

  422. theme of hope in scripture, we have been

  423. born again through a living hope because

  424. of the resurrection. So worldly hope is

  425. dead. Christian hope is living. Worldly

  426. hope is something we try to create.

  427. But Christian hope is something God

  428. gives.

  429. Hope is like this idea of light at the

  430. end of the tunnel. I want light at the

  431. end of the tunnel for this situation or

  432. for whatever is going on in my life. All

  433. of us want a bit of hope. All of us want

  434. a bit of light at the end of the tunnel.

  435. What we try and do in this world is we

  436. try and create our own hope. And we

  437. create our own hope by saying all I need

  438. to do is change my perspective and then

  439. I'll have hope. Or create we create our

  440. own hope by saying you know what I'm

  441. just going to focus on the positives.

  442. And if I focus on the positives that

  443. will give me hope. Or we try and create

  444. our hope by focusing on those who have

  445. gone before us and done it before us.

  446. And we try and create our hope. But

  447. Christian hope isn't a hope that you

  448. create. Christian hope is a hope that

  449. God gives.

  450. He freely gives us hope. You don't have

  451. to create your hope. He gives it to you.

  452. Your hope isn't dead. It is living.

  453. Romans 15:13 says this. May the God of

    Romans 15:13

  454. hope fill you with all joy and peace in

  455. believing so that by the power of the

  456. Holy Spirit you may abound in hope. May

  457. the God of hope fill you so that you may

  458. abound with hope. Hope as a Christian

  459. isn't something you need to create. It

  460. is something God gives you and something

  461. that you have. It is glorious.

  462. Worldly hope is wishful thinking, but

  463. Christian hope is confident expectation.

  464. If I was to ask someone, maybe some of

  465. you, do you think you're going to

  466. heaven?

  467. Someone might say, well, I hope so.

  468. That's no hope at all. The Christian

  469. doesn't have to say, I hope so. I I I

  470. hope I'll get there. I hope I'll figure

  471. it out. I hope I'll do it enough. I'll

  472. hope I'll do enough actions or prayers

  473. or or whatever it might be that I hope

  474. so one day.

  475. No, for the Christian, it's not wishful

  476. thinking. It's guaranteed certainty

  477. because of what Christ has done.

  478. And so our hope is in heaven.

  479. Romans 8:24, for in this hope we were

    Romans 8:24

  480. saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope

  481. for who for who hopes for what he sees.

  482. But if we hope for what we do not see,

  483. we wait for it with patience. And what

  484. he is talking about there is the

  485. redemption that we are going to have in

  486. Christ Jesus. Do you see how worldly

  487. hope is different from Christian hope?

  488. Worldly hope is temporary. It's only for

  489. this world. We hope things will change.

  490. Christian hope it is eternal. It is sure

  491. and secure and will be finished in

  492. heaven. But the biggest difference is

  493. what this verse points out. Those verses

  494. relate to the topic of hope in general

  495. throughout the scriptures. But this

  496. verse tells us something clear about

  497. hope that we should all remember.

  498. Worldly hope. It is self-centered.

  499. Christian hope. It is Christ centered.

  500. Notice what he says.

  501. God our savior and of Christ Jesus

  502. our hope.

  503. Christian hope is focused

  504. not upon wishful thinking or temporary

  505. realities.

  506. It is focused on the person and work of

  507. Jesus Christ.

  508. If you are lacking hope today as a

  509. Christian,

  510. I would guess it's because this you've

  511. taken your eyes off Jesus.

  512. There's some situations that we look at

  513. and we say, "This is hopeless. This

  514. cannot be rescued. This cannot be

  515. solved."

  516. No. In Jesus,

  517. in Jesus, there's always hope.

  518. This is who he is. So Jesus Christ, he

  519. changes us. Jesus Christ, he is our

  520. hope.

  521. Lastly, we see about Jesus is that he is

  522. our Lord. Look at what he says in verse

  523. two. To Timothy, my true child in the

  524. faith, grace, mercy, and peace from God

  525. the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.

  526. This is a designation given to Jesus

  527. that not only that Jesus is the Christ,

  528. he's the Messiah, he's the anointed one,

  529. but he actually declares

  530. that Jesus is Lord, that Jesus is the

  531. word there is curios.

  532. This is who Jesus is. Now if you look at

  533. the the um Greek translation of the old

  534. testament there is only one who is

  535. called chorus lord in this way and it is

  536. yahweh

  537. that designation is given to Yahweh.

  538. In Isaiah um Isaiah 45 verse 21-23

    Isaiah 45:21–23

  539. it talks about Yahweh that he has the

  540. name that is above every name that he is

  541. the Lord of the universe that this is

  542. Yahweh

  543. and that to Yahweh every knee will bow

  544. and every tongue will confess that he is

  545. Lord

  546. the God of salvation throughout the

  547. whole Old Testament. He is called Lord.

  548. But then when you come to the New

  549. Testament, something incredible happens.

  550. We hear scriptures like Philippians

    Philippians 2:8

  551. chapter 2 verse 8 where it says about

  552. Christ and being found in human form, he

  553. humbled himself by becoming obedient to

  554. the point of death, even death on a

  555. cross. Therefore, Christ highly exalted

  556. him and bestowed on him the name that is

  557. above every name, so that at the name of

  558. Jesus, every knee should bow and every

  559. tongue will confess

  560. under heaven and under earth, and every

  561. tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is

  562. Lord to the glory of God the Father. And

  563. that's pointing back to Isaiah 45,

  564. which speaks of Yahweh being Lord.

  565. That title is now given to Jesus.

  566. And the idea is this. He's Lord of my

  567. life.

  568. He has all authority. He has all

  569. control. And one day, every knee will

  570. bow and every tongue will confess that

  571. he is Lord.

  572. One day your knee will bow and your

  573. tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is

  574. Lord.

  575. Why wouldn't you believe that today? One

  576. day you're going to do it willingly or

  577. unwillingly.

  578. And I would call on you today

  579. to submit to him as Lord in your life.

  580. That Jesus would be the ruler in your

  581. life. That you would commit to him above

  582. all else.

  583. Bow the knee today. Confess his name

  584. today.

  585. Worship him as Lord today.

  586. So

  587. we recognize in these verses all that

  588. Christ has done for us. Christ, he

  589. changes us. Christ, he gives us hope.

  590. Christ, he is our Lord. But we also see

  591. in these verses all that God has done

  592. for us, God the Father. And we notice

  593. that by the little phrase he attaches to

  594. God in these verses. Timothy or Paul, he

  595. could just say Paul

  596. to Timothy and he could mention Jesus

  597. and God. But no, he adds these phrases

  598. onto their names. And what do we learn

  599. about what God has done in our lives?

  600. Well, in verse one, we see Paul, an

  601. apostle of Christ Jesus, by the command

  602. of God, our savior.

  603. This is who God the Father is. God the

  604. father is our savior.

  605. If I was to ask a Christian and come to

  606. come to a Christian and say who is your

  607. savior?

  608. Who is your savior? I would say 99% of

  609. people would say Jesus is my savior.

  610. But our theology isn't full enough if we

  611. don't understand this that God the

  612. father, he is our savior.

  613. Paul will repeat this twice more in this

  614. letter as we go in through this letter

  615. that God the father is our savior. And

  616. we've seen this theme throughout the

  617. scriptures that God is the savior of his

  618. people. He saved his people from the

  619. Egyptians. He saved his people from the

  620. Philistines.

  621. He saved his people from the Midianites.

  622. He saved his people, his his chosen

  623. people from the Babylonians. Throughout

  624. the history of the scriptures, what do

  625. we understand about God? There is a

  626. theme that runs the way throughout the

  627. scriptures and it is this. God the

  628. father is a savior.

  629. He rescues people.

  630. And so what happens in in in the book of

  631. psalms is this is that we are called

  632. then to praise God the father as savior.

  633. They they sing songs of praise to God

  634. the Father as Savior. In the book of

  635. Psalms,

  636. Psalm 25:5

    Psalms 25:5

  637. says this, "Lead me in your truth and

  638. teach me, for you are the God of my

  639. salvation,

  640. and for you I wait all day long."

  641. Isn't that beautiful relationship?

  642. You are God, my savior.

  643. and for you I will wait all day long.

  644. Lana was minding a baby a while ago

  645. and the baby was standing in her house

  646. and looking out the window waiting for

  647. who?

  648. Mom or dad?

  649. Waiting all day long.

  650. That should be our posture with God the

  651. Father, sitting at the window, longing

  652. and waiting all day long.

  653. Psalm 62:2 says this, "He alone is my

    Psalms 62:2

  654. rock and my salvation, my fortress. I

  655. shall not be shaken."

  656. Do you praise God the Father as your

  657. savior? you should.

  658. And so we learn

  659. all that God has done for us. That God

  660. is not only the savior, but as I've

  661. already mentioned at the end of verse

  662. two, what does he say to Timothy, my

  663. true child in the faith? Grace, mercy,

  664. and peace

  665. from God the Father

  666. and our Lord Jesus Christ.

  667. He is an authoritative apostle. says

  668. this, "Grace,

  669. mercy, and peace

  670. from God the Father."

  671. I'll just say this. I could say more

  672. about this God being father, but let me

  673. just say this.

  674. What's the prayer that we all learned in

  675. school when we were younger? Do you

  676. remember the prayer that we all learned

  677. in school? Maybe different

  678. nationalities, but I bet you learned it

  679. somewhere. What's the prayer? Our father

  680. who art in heaven.

  681. That's how Jesus taught us to pray.

  682. When you pray, how do we pray Jesus?

  683. When you pray, pray using these words,

  684. our father.

  685. And what's so difficult is that is

  686. drilled into us from when we were very

  687. young. Our father who art in heaven,

  688. hallowed be thy name. And then we go to

  689. an our father and and our father and our

  690. father and our father. And I think

  691. Jesus gave it to us not as a repetition.

  692. Jesus gave it to us and as as an

  693. example, but unfortunately in the

  694. repetition, we've missed the

  695. relationship.

  696. We say our father so quickly.

  697. But isn't it absolutely insane that the

  698. Lord of the universe, no matter how your

  699. father, your earthly father has ever

  700. treated you, the Lord of the universe,

  701. he is our father,

  702. our loving father.

  703. How should a son or daughter talk to the

  704. father?

  705. with expectation,

  706. with love,

  707. with unity.

  708. That's how you should speak to your

  709. father.

  710. My father who's in heaven, he really

  711. loves to hear your voice.

  712. So, praise him as savior

  713. and speak to him as father.

  714. So, in these two verses, here is what we

  715. learn. We we learn all that Christ has

  716. done for us. Christ changes us. Christ

  717. gives us hope. Christ is our Lord. We

  718. learn all that God has done for us. That

  719. that God is our our savior and that God

  720. is our father.

  721. But why do we learn all these things?

  722. Why does Paul attach those little

  723. phrases onto God and Christ?

  724. because of how he wants to write. We are

  725. to remember all that Christ has done. We

  726. are to remember all that God the Father

  727. has done.

  728. But we're also to remember in these two

  729. verses the command.

  730. Listen to how Paul writes. Paul, an

  731. apostle of Christ Jesus

  732. by the command

  733. of God our savior

  734. and of Christ Jesus our hope.

  735. When Paul sits down and he writes, Paul

  736. is saying this, I am not writing on my

  737. own command. I am not writing my own

  738. ideas. I am not writing of my own

  739. initiative, valition or will. I am

  740. writing

  741. by the command

  742. of Jesus Christ who changed me. Of Jesus

  743. Christ who is my hope. Of Jesus Christ

  744. who gives me life. I am writing by the

  745. command of God my savior and God my

  746. father. This is how I write.

  747. So what does that cause people to do who

  748. receive the letter?

  749. It causes them to listen.

  750. Paul, he does everything by the command

  751. of this Jesus Christ and by the command

  752. of this God the Father.

  753. He writes by command. And this phrase by

  754. command, Paul uses it three times in his

  755. letters.

  756. He uses it three times in his letters.

  757. once he uses it at the end of Romans in

  758. Romans chapter 16 that that the gospel

    Romans 16 chapter mention

  759. is proclaimed throughout the earth by

  760. the command of the eternal God.

  761. The second time he uses it is here that

  762. he writes and when he writes he writes

  763. by the command of God. And the third

  764. time he uses that phrase by the command

  765. of God is in Titus 1:3 where he says

    Titus 1:3

  766. this. In his own time he has revealed

  767. his word in the preaching

  768. with which I was entrusted by the

  769. command of God our savior.

  770. So when Paul writes, he writes by the

  771. command of God. And when Paul preaches,

  772. he preaches by the command of God. So

  773. everything that Paul does, he does by

  774. the command of God.

  775. I think we can learn from Paul's example

  776. that everything we do in life

  777. should be by the command of God.

  778. Are you listening to the commands of God

  779. in your life? Are you submitting to the

  780. commands of God in your life? Because if

  781. you listen and if you submit to the ma

  782. commands of God in your life, I do

  783. believe your life will flourish.

  784. I don't believe you'll be exempt from

  785. suffering.

  786. But I do believe you will live the life

  787. that you are meant to live. Because if I

  788. live my life for my creator, I'm living

  789. my life the way I'm meant to live my

  790. life because he created me. And so if I

  791. live following his constructions and his

  792. commands, I'm living my life the right

  793. way. So are you living your life by the

  794. command of God? Here's the command of

  795. God. Repent and believe.

  796. Have you obeyed that command of God?

  797. This is what what Jesus calls us to do.

  798. Repent and believe the gospel. Repent of

  799. our sin. Turn away from our sin and

  800. trust in the Lord Jesus for eternal

  801. life. Have you obeyed the command of God

  802. to repent and believe? Another command

  803. of God to be baptized.

  804. Once you repent and believe and trust in

  805. Jesus as savior, the next step is to be

  806. baptized and confirm that publicly. Have

  807. you obeyed the command of God? This is

  808. how Paul lives his life. This is how you

  809. should live your life by the commands of

  810. God.

  811. Children,

  812. scripture, what does it call you to do?

  813. Obey your parents.

  814. That's a command of God.

  815. I'm not telling you to obey your parents

  816. just so you obey them. I'm telling you

  817. to obey your parents so that you obey

  818. God.

  819. Obey the commands of God.

  820. When you're at work, the commands of God

  821. would tell us, "Work well.

  822. Work with all your heart is working for

  823. the Lord and not for men."

  824. Are you obeying the commands of God?

  825. And finally,

  826. I think this is the command that Paul is

  827. fulfilling and that Paul fulfilled in

  828. his life. This is why Paul wrote his

  829. letters. This is why Paul preached the

  830. way he preached because he was obeying

  831. one of the most important commands of

  832. God. Make disciples.

  833. That's what we're called to do, brothers

  834. and sisters. Make disciples.

  835. Let us live our lives

  836. obeying the command of God

  837. who is our father who is our savior. Let

  838. us live our lives

  839. obeying the commands of Jesus

  840. who changed us who is our hope and who

  841. is our God.

  842. And as we listen to this letter of Paul,

  843. let us understand this that every word

  844. he is writing, it's a command from God.

  845. He's writing these words because God

  846. commanded him.

  847. There was this lady I was talking to

  848. before and she was talking about first

  849. Timothy and she loved the Lord. But she

  850. said to me after reading first Timothy,

  851. I don't like Paul.

  852. Paul's a misogynist.

  853. Because of the way that Paul writes,

  854. some of the things that Paul writes,

  855. some people can conclude Paul doesn't

  856. really like women.

  857. And we'll get to there. We'll get to

  858. those verses.

  859. But here's what you need to remember as

  860. we get to those verses. And before we

  861. do,

  862. Paul's not writing by himself.

  863. He's writing by the command of God.

  864. And so we should listen to the word in

  865. that way. Let's pray. Lord, we thank you

  866. for these first verses that show us all

  867. that you, God our father, have done and

  868. all that we have in Christ Jesus.

  869. Lord, help us remember these things.

  870. Help us to live by the command of God.

  871. Amen.
