  4. Good morning.

  5. My name is Brian and I am a member of the Alameda Community Group.

  6. It's great to see you.

  7. And today's scripture passage and lesson is from the Old Testament from the book of Exodus.

  8. A reading from the book of Exodus.

  9. You yourselves have seen what I did to Egypt and how I carried you on eagle's wings and brought you to myself.

  10. Now if you obey me fully and keep my covenant, then out of all nations you will be my treasured possession.

  11. Although the whole earth is mine, you will be for me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.

  12. These are the words you are to speak to the Israelites.

  13. Then Moses led the people out of the camp to meet with God and they stood at the foot of the mountain.

  14. Mount Sinai was covered with smoke because the Lord descended on it in fire.

  15. The smoke billowed up from it like smoke from a furnace and the whole mountain trembled violently.

  16. And God spoke all these words.

  17. I am the Lord your God who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.

  18. You shall have no other gods before me.

  19. When the people saw the thunder and lightning and heard the trumpet and saw the mountains in smoke, they trembled with fear.

  20. They stayed at a distance and said to Moses, speak to us yourself and we will listen, but do not have God speak to us or we will die.

  21. When the Lord finished speaking to Moses on Mount Sinai, he gave him the two tablets of the covenant law, the tablets of stone inscribed by the finger of God.

  22. The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God stands forever.

  23. Good morning.

  24. I'm Jonathan, one of the other pastors here.

  25. And we've begun a series over the past few weeks on the Ten Commandments.

  26. Today we're going to be talking about the first of those ten.

  27. And next to Psalm 23, next to the Lord's Prayer, the Ten Commandments are probably the most and best known of all the portions of the Bible.

  28. There are few parts of Scripture that have had such a large role in the life of the church and in public life as these Ten Commandments.

  29. Because here we find a summary statement.

  30. Here we find really the embodiment of God's will for all of human life.

  31. But immediately we face a big question.

  32. Immediately we face a problem.

  33. And why is that?

  34. Because the deepest value of Western secular culture is freedom.

  35. It's liberty.

  36. Give me liberty or give me death.

  37. Right?

  38. And we often define freedom or liberty as the absence of constraints.

  39. And so many people look at Christianity and they begin to ask themselves, you know, if I get into this, is this going to narrow my options?

  40. Is this going to limit my liberty and put constraints on my freedom and basically cramp my style?

  41. Here we have Ten Commandments that are absolute truth claims.

  42. That by definition constrain our liberty.

  43. So this must be the enemy of our freedom.

  44. And our goal over the next ten weeks as we go through the Ten Commandments is to actually try to convince you that these are not the enemy to freedom but actually the basis of true freedom.

  45. That the Ten Commandments are the basis of being a truly free human being.

  46. And you got to remember that these commands have a context.

  47. They don't come out of nowhere.

  48. They're what God says to his people after he rescues them out of Egypt and brings them to Mount Sinai.

  49. And there he said in verse 1, God spoke all these words,

  50. I am the Lord your God who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.

  51. The first words of the Ten Commandments are not commands at all.

  52. The first words of the Ten Commandments are a statement of love and a statement of loyalty and liberation.

  53. The first words of the Ten Commandments are a statement of grace and of goodness of God to you.

  54. And so we begin with who God is to his people.

  55. And what it says is this family's fundamental identity is that we used to be slaves.

  56. But now we've been liberated.

  57. Now we're a free people and our liberator is the Lord.

  58. And so really the Ten Commandments are a charter of freedom.

  59. They're an ethic of freedom.

  60. It's an ethic of people who are wanting to live free.

  61. God says to them, if you'll listen to my voice, if you'll keep the terms of my covenant,

  62. then I will set you apart as a holy nation.

  63. I'll set you apart as a priestly kingdom.

  64. And you will shine my light to all the peoples of the world.

  65. But of course, if you want to be slaves again, if you want to slip back into bondage,

  66. just ignore these words and do whatever you like.

  67. So these are ten life-giving words, ten freedom-protecting words that are not given to us as a ladder

  68. by which we climb up to secure God's love and his liberation.

  69. God's people already have that.

  70. It's not obey me so that I can deliver you.

  71. It's you've been delivered.

  72. So now here's the way to please me.

  73. Here's the way to delight me.

  74. Here's the way to say thank you.

  75. Does that make sense?

  76. Okay, I got to say that every week because we got to get it deep in our heads and our hearts.

  77. Now, I want to dive in and I want to talk about the nature of God's law

  78. and the substance of God's law and the purpose of God's law today

  79. as we get into this first commandment.

  80. And let's start with the nature of God's law.

  81. The people have come here to the foot of Mount Sinai to meet with God.

  82. And it says that God himself spoke these words to the people.

  83. And it says in verse 19 that they said to Moses,

  84. Moses, speak to us yourself and we will listen,

  85. but do not have God speak any more to us or we will die.

  86. These 10 commandments that God spoke from the mountain,

  87. he didn't speak indirectly through his mediator, Moses.

  88. He spoke them directly.

  89. He spoke them audibly.

  90. And this was such an awesome experience that basically they were overwhelmed.

  91. They said, we can't take any more of this.

  92. We can't handle any more of the power of the direct voice of God.

  93. And you notice there in Exodus 31 verse 18,

    Exodus 31:18

  94. it says that these are the direct words from God given not only audibly at the mountain,

  95. but they were also given legibly.

  96. They were written, it says, by the finger of God.

  97. That's the source of these commands.

  98. And it also says that they're written on tablets of stone.

  99. That's how solid they are.

  100. That's how enduring they're going to be.

  101. And they're so important that they're given two times in the Torah.

  102. They're giving here first at Exodus chapter 20,

    Exodus 20 chapter mention

  103. and they're given again in Deuteronomy chapter five to prepare the people

  104. as they enter into the promised land.

  105. So it must be really, really important.

  106. And what God is saying is this is the foundational word for your life.

  107. And here it is.

  108. You shall have no other gods before me.

  109. All you need to know is given to you right here.

  110. And what do we need to know?

  111. We need to know that humanity was made to worship the living God.

  112. We were made to listen to God, to trust God, to love God, to obey God, and to worship God.

  113. All the troubles, all the problems, all the trials of our world that persist,

  114. the reason that our world is so miserable can be put quite simply.

  115. And it's that human beings are alienated from this God.

  116. This God who says you should have no other gods before me.

  117. That's what's wrong with our world.

  118. That's the cause of all of our troubles from the very, well, back to just after the beginning, I suppose.

  119. It wasn't always that way.

  120. But after humanity fell from a very high place,

  121. God called out of humanity, and he chose one man, Abraham.

  122. He chose one family, Israel.

  123. And he said, I'm going to be your God, and you're going to be my covenant people,

  124. and I'm going to liberate you from slavery, and you will enjoy a life of blessing.

  125. You will enjoy a life of flourishing.

  126. You will enjoy a life of freedom and peace on the condition that you live as I would have you to live.

  127. And he puts before his people two possibilities, two alternatives.

  128. You can have a life of blessing and doing it my way,

  129. or you can have a life of cursing, doing it your way.

  130. And that's how it's been since the Garden of Eden.

  131. Adam and Eve were given a choice of how they would exercise their freedom.

  132. And God said to them there, he said,

  133. you can either live under me in blessing and peace and joy,

  134. or you can live a life of miserable, wretched, cursed existence.

  135. And here at Mount Sinai, God is reminding his people that this is just how life in his creation works.

  136. And he puts it in such a clear and simple way that even a child can understand it.

  137. These are the conditions upon which you will be blessed,

  138. that you have no other gods before me.

  139. But if you don't adhere to that law, you're not going to be blessed.

  140. And if you just read the Old Testament for five or ten minutes,

  141. you can see that when God's people submit to him,

  142. when God's people submit to his law,

  143. he blesses them and their life is noble,

  144. their life is flourishing, their life is wonderful.

  145. But when they rebel, when they refuse to keep his law,

  146. when they turn after other gods,

  147. everything invariably goes wrong.

  148. Now, why is that?

  149. Because the creator God has written into the very structure of his created reality,

  150. and he's written into the very fabric of your created self,

  151. that he must be first,

  152. and he must be the greatest.

  153. And what happens is when we decide we're going to live

  154. and go against the grain of the universe,

  155. what happens?

  156. We get splinters.

  157. Right?

  158. When we decide we're going to go against the fabric of who God made me to be,

  159. we're going to start to unravel.

  160. When we break God's law,

  161. we become broken.

  162. And that's why Jesus,

  163. when he's talking in the Gospels one afternoon,

  164. he's asked this question about,

  165. Jesus, what is the first commandment?

  166. What's the greatest and most important commandment of all?

  167. And what did Jesus answer in Matthew 22?

  168. He said, love the Lord your God with all your heart,

  169. with all your soul,

  170. and with all your mind.

  171. This is the first and greatest commandment,

  172. and the second is like it.

  173. Love your neighbor as yourself.

  174. All the law and the prophets hang on these two commandments.

  175. And here Jesus gives us a perfect summary of the Ten Commandments,

  176. a perfect summary of God's moral law.

  177. And the way he expounds them is that he says they can be divided into two sections,

  178. which we call the two tables of the law.

  179. The first table of the law is commands one through four.

  180. Command one,

  181. two,

  182. three,

  183. and four.

  184. And that has to do with our attitude toward God and our relationship with God.

  185. And then Jesus says there's the second table of the law that has to do with commands five through ten.

  186. And that has to do with our attitude toward and our relationship with our fellow men and women.

  187. And what Jesus is saying is if you look at God's moral law,

  188. there's a vertical component that comes first about how we honor God.

  189. And there's a horizontal component that comes second about how we honor our neighbor.

  190. And if you follow Jesus' exposition of the law,

  191. he says that you've got two divisions,

  192. two sections,

  193. two tables of commands.

  194. But notice that there's an order.

  195. Notice that one comes before the other.

  196. The first division is the one in which we are reminded about our relationship with God.

  197. What am I to do in order to have a happy life,

  198. a blessed life,

  199. a contented life?

  200. What has the whole world got to do

  201. that it might be delivered from all of its troubles and wars and miseries and calamities?

  202. The answer comes that the supreme thing in life

  203. is to be in a right relationship with God.

  204. You should have no other gods before me.

  205. You've got to love me.

  206. Trust me.

  207. Obey me.

  208. Worship me.

  209. I am the Lord is how the commandments begin.

  210. The law of God,

  211. importantly,

  212. does not start with me.

  213. It doesn't start with you.

  214. I am the Lord is how it starts.

  215. It doesn't start with our financial problems.

  216. It doesn't start with our psychological problems.

  217. It doesn't start with our relational problems

  218. or our social problems

  219. or our political problems.

  220. No, the first thing,

  221. the law is concerned to hold before us

  222. is to hold us face to face with God.

  223. God first.

  224. Humanity and all of its issues second.

  225. And that order is absolutely vital.

  226. The most fatal blunder in human thinking

  227. is the failure to remember this order.

  228. God and our relationship with God

  229. comes first before everything else.

  230. That is the greatest issue in the world today.

  231. Of course, the Ten Commandments are going to deal with all sorts of external, social, horizontal issues

  232. like your parents and authorities and murder and adultery and stealing and all these things.

  233. But those are always downstream

  234. from this existential, spiritual, vertical concern about our relationship with God.

  235. And the point of the Ten Commandments is that you can't regard humanity

  236. and its problems rightly and correctly

  237. unless you regard human beings in their relationship to God.

  238. So, what that means is that we can look around the Bay Area right now

  239. and we can think about all of our social divisions and disputes.

  240. We can look at our class issues between rich and poor,

  241. the haves and the have-nots.

  242. We can look at our work issues between management and employment.

  243. We can look at our personal clashes between men and women,

  244. husbands and wives, parents and children, neighbor and neighbor.

  245. And people can try to solve those problems by looking to the economists

  246. and looking to the psychologists and looking to the sociologists

  247. and looking to the philosophers and looking to the politicians.

  248. But you won't understand any of that properly.

  249. You won't understand any of that holistically

  250. until you look at all these people in terms of who?

  251. In terms of God.

  252. In terms of their relationship with God.

  253. You shall have no other gods before me.

  254. That's the first thing he says.

  255. Because we've been made by God

  256. and we can't truly function as human beings

  257. unless and until we are in a right relationship with God.

  258. And when we forget God,

  259. when we try to live our lives apart from God,

  260. when we try to run our lives without God,

  261. we always get into trouble.

  262. And you can just look at the world around you.

  263. You can just read the newspaper this morning

  264. to see the evidence of that.

  265. If I look at myself apart from God

  266. and I look at other men and women apart from God,

  267. I begin to set myself up as a God.

  268. And other people do the same.

  269. I want to be first.

  270. And they want to be first.

  271. I want things the way I want it.

  272. They want things the way they want it.

  273. I want my sovereign rights as an individual.

  274. You want your sovereign rights as an individual.

  275. They want their sovereign rights as a nation.

  276. And we want our sovereign rights as a nation.

  277. And we're all at a war of all against all.

  278. Why is that?

  279. Because we're not all on our knees together

  280. worshiping the one true living God.

  281. But when I'm doing that,

  282. when I'm worshiping God rightly,

  283. having no other gods before him,

  284. I can begin to see myself as a creature made by God,

  285. living under God, totally dependent upon God.

  286. And then I begin to see my fellow men and women

  287. as creatures just like me.

  288. And the order of these commandments

  289. is tremendously important

  290. because the first table must come before the second table.

  291. When we fail to observe the first things about God,

  292. we will inevitably begin to ignore

  293. and neglect the second things about people.

  294. When we fail in the vertical,

  295. we will very soon begin to see the unraveling

  296. of the horizontal at the individual level,

  297. the familia level, the social level,

  298. the national level, and the international level.

  299. And so my first question for you this morning, friends,

  300. is do you believe that God is first?

  301. Do you believe the order?

  302. It's written into the very fabric of the universe,

  303. the very fabric of yourself,

  304. that God is supposed to be first and greatest

  305. and most important than everything else.

  306. Do you believe that?

  307. And if someone were to come and audit your life

  308. and they looked at your calendar

  309. and how you spent your time

  310. and they looked at your bank account

  311. and how you spent your money

  312. and they looked at the books and what you read

  313. and they look at your priorities

  314. and the decisions and choices you make,

  315. would it be obvious to them that you believe that?

  316. The nature of God's law.

  317. But I want to also talk about the substance of God's law.

  318. This is sort of a general overview,

  319. but let me get it now down into the specifics

  320. about the substance of this first and foundational command

  321. by which all the other commands stand or fall.

  322. If you get this first commandment,

  323. everything else will just fall in line.

  324. If you don't get this thing,

  325. everything else is going to fall apart.

  326. Verse three,

  327. you shall have no other gods before me.

  328. First of all,

  329. it's the you there,

  330. you shall,

  331. the you there is first person singular.

  332. The Lord is speaking directly

  333. to each individual listener.

  334. And he's saying you,

  335. Jonathan Berry St.

  336. Claire,

  337. I'm looking at you.

  338. I'm talking to you.

  339. I brought you out of slavery

  340. and therefore you,

  341. Jonathan,

  342. are to have no other gods before me.

  343. Secondly,

  344. he says you shall,

  345. you shall.

  346. These are not 10 suggestions.

  347. They're not 10 recommendations.

  348. They are 10 commandments.

  349. If your employer says,

  350. you shall come work in the office

  351. from Monday to Friday,

  352. if your government says,

  353. you shall pay your taxes

  354. on April 15th,

  355. you recognize the,

  356. and you honor the authority

  357. as the one who enjoys the privileges

  358. of being a citizen

  359. and being an employee

  360. and you get in line.

  361. Well,

  362. the one who says,

  363. you shall here,

  364. is the high king of heaven.

  365. He's the ultimate authority

  366. by which all other authority

  367. is derived.

  368. And as your creator,

  369. he owns you.

  370. And if he's redeemed you,

  371. he doubly owns you.

  372. And that means he can tell you

  373. to do things.

  374. He can command you.

  375. He can direct you.

  376. He can say,

  377. you shall.

  378. And the third thing here

  379. is he says,

  380. you shall have no,

  381. or a lot of them say,

  382. you shall not.

  383. Most of these commandments

  384. are negative,

  385. but they assume the positive.

  386. And some of them

  387. are positive

  388. and they assume the negative.

  389. So for example,

  390. when you fast forward

  391. to the fourth commandment,

  392. it says,

  393. remember the Sabbath day

  394. by keeping it holy.

  395. Or the fifth commandment,

  396. honor your father

  397. and your mother.

  398. Those positive commands

  399. assume the negative.

  400. The negative commands

  401. assume the positive.

  402. So for example,

  403. in the Garden of Eden,

  404. in Genesis chapter two,

  405. God says,

  406. you shall not eat

  407. from the tree

  408. of the knowledge

  409. of good and evil.

  410. And the great temptation

  411. there in that moment

  412. was to focus

  413. on the one negative prohibition

  414. about one tree.

  415. But that command

  416. implied the positive permission

  417. about thousands

  418. and thousands

  419. and thousands

  420. and thousands

  421. of other fruit trees

  422. in the garden

  423. to be enjoyed.

  424. And so what we have

  425. to remember

  426. is that every no,

  427. God says,

  428. there's many yeses.

  429. And every restriction

  430. God gives,

  431. there's a thousand freedoms

  432. and permissions.

  433. It says,

  434. no other God.

  435. That's the negative side

  436. of the command.

  437. But the positive side

  438. is what?

  439. You get to have me

  440. as your God.

  441. You get to have

  442. the one true living God

  443. as your God.

  444. The fourth thing,

  445. you, singular,

  446. you shall,

  447. command, authority.

  448. You shall not,

  449. negative but also positive.

  450. And then it says,

  451. you shall have

  452. no other gods.

  453. Now on the one hand,

  454. the Bible says

  455. that there's only one God.

  456. This is a monotheistic book.

  457. The other gods

  458. of the nations,

  459. Egypt,

  460. Babylon,

  461. Greeks,

  462. Romans,

  463. those gods

  464. don't actually exist.

  465. They're nothings.

  466. There are no other

  467. deities or divinities

  468. competing

  469. to be beside God

  470. or before God.

  471. They're not there.

  472. But on the other hand,

  473. God gives us this command

  474. knowing the original temptation

  475. in Genesis 3,

  476. which was what?

  477. You shall be like God.

  478. That's the original temptation

  479. for the human heart,

  480. especially the fallen human heart,

  481. is to think that we

  482. ourselves

  483. can live as

  484. lords

  485. in the place of God.

  486. that little creatures

  487. can trade places

  488. with the creator,

  489. can play the part

  490. of the creator.

  491. Little dependent creatures

  492. can elevate themselves

  493. to a place of power

  494. and authority

  495. where only the creator God

  496. deserves to be.

  497. The biblical record,

  498. the historical record,

  499. proves that

  500. we not only seek

  501. to deify ourselves

  502. and divinize

  503. ourselves,

  504. our creaturely selves

  505. in many ways,

  506. but we also do this

  507. with all manner

  508. of aspects

  509. of God's creation.

  510. And just to give you

  511. one example,

  512. Jesus says

  513. in the Sermon on the Mount,

  514. he says,

  515. you cannot serve

  516. both God and money.

  517. And what Jesus

  518. is saying there

  519. is that there's something

  520. in our human heart

  521. that's inclined

  522. to take a good part

  523. of God's creation

  524. like money,

  525. like material well-being,

  526. like any entity

  527. that has the potential

  528. to create wealth.

  529. and we can give

  530. that thing

  531. such an elevated status,

  532. such an ultimate status

  533. in the thoughts

  534. of our minds

  535. and the affections

  536. of our hearts

  537. that it's no longer

  538. a gift from God

  539. to get work done.

  540. Money is no longer

  541. a gift from God

  542. to create a flourishing

  543. human community.

  544. Now money

  545. is money

  546. with a capital M.

  547. Right?

  548. I serve it.

  549. I live for it.

  550. I need it.

  551. I want it.

  552. It's my precious.

  553. And if I have

  554. more of it,

  555. I feel happy.

  556. I feel great.

  557. I feel secure.

  558. And if I have less of it,

  559. I feel devastated.

  560. I feel sad.

  561. If I lose it,

  562. I'm feeling total despair.

  563. Martin Luther,

  564. who wrote that first song

  565. we sang today,

  566. he also wrote this

  567. in the 16th century.

  568. He said,

  569. what does it mean

  570. to have a God?

  571. And his answer was this.

  572. A God means that

  573. from which

  574. we are to expect

  575. all good

  576. and to which

  577. we are to take refuge

  578. in all distress.

  579. A God is that

  580. upon which

  581. you set your heart

  582. and put your trust.

  583. That is properly

  584. your God.

  585. And what he's saying

  586. is that we can

  587. set our heart

  588. and we can put our trust

  589. and we can pledge

  590. our loyalty

  591. to many finite

  592. and created things

  593. and we can give it

  594. ultimate value,

  595. ultimate meaning,

  596. and ultimate power

  597. and we can say

  598. to that thing

  599. instead of saying to God,

  600. God,

  601. you are my life,

  602. you are my security,

  603. you are my hope.

  604. The scriptures

  605. are full of examples

  606. of this.

  607. Job 31 says

  608. we can put our trust

  609. in gold

  610. and we can say to gold,

  611. you are my security

  612. and my confidence.

  613. Psalm 146 says

  614. that we can put our trust

  615. in princes

  616. and in human beings

  617. who cannot save us.

  618. Habakkuk 1 says

  619. that our strength

  620. can become our God.

  621. Philippians 3 says

  622. that our stomach

  623. can become our God.

  624. 2 Timothy 3 says

  625. that we can be lovers

  626. of pleasure

  627. more than lovers

  628. of God.

  629. When we set our heart

  630. on and put our trust

  631. in things

  632. that are not worthy

  633. of our ultimate loyalty

  634. and allegiance,

  635. they will eventually

  636. take the place of God

  637. and in that place,

  638. because they're not God,

  639. they will enslave us

  640. and they will dehumanize us

  641. and they'll do the same thing

  642. to all the people around us,

  643. whether it's money,

  644. whether it's sex,

  645. whether it's power,

  646. whether you live

  647. for your work

  648. and your career

  649. and your status

  650. and your success,

  651. whether you live

  652. for romance

  653. or for children

  654. or for family,

  655. if you make anything

  656. other than God

  657. God in your life,

  658. when these gifts

  659. that are meant

  660. to be means

  661. to the end

  662. of glorifying God

  663. actually become

  664. the ends in themselves,

  665. it will lead

  666. to your enslavement

  667. and your destruction.

  668. Because these are

  669. wonderful servants

  670. but they're terrible masters.

  671. They're wonderful gifts

  672. but they're terrible gods.

  673. And I want you to look

  674. at the last phrase

  675. in this command

  676. which it says,

  677. you shall have

  678. no other gods

  679. where?

  680. Before me.

  681. The Hebrew

  682. literally here says,

  683. there will not be

  684. for you

  685. any other gods

  686. before my face

  687. or in my presence.

  688. And what that means

  689. is that your chief end,

  690. your highest good

  691. as a human being

  692. is to live

  693. before the face

  694. of God.

  695. It's to live

  696. in the presence

  697. of God.

  698. And remember,

  699. verse 2 doesn't say,

  700. I am a God

  701. or I am the God.

  702. What does it say?

  703. It says,

  704. I am the Lord,

  705. your God.

  706. And so when he liberated you

  707. and he brought you

  708. into a covenant

  709. relationship with him

  710. and he said,

  711. I, the absolute,

  712. transcendent

  713. and holy God

  714. am your God

  715. and you are my people.

  716. You belong to me.

  717. This is language

  718. very much

  719. like the song of songs.

  720. I am my beloved's

  721. and my beloved is mine.

  722. And that's why

  723. the scriptures

  724. talk about

  725. the relationship

  726. between God

  727. and his people

  728. like a marriage.

  729. That we're bonded

  730. to God.

  731. We're wedded

  732. to our covenant

  733. God

  734. in an exclusive

  735. and permanent

  736. and intimate

  737. personal relationship.

  738. So what does it mean

  739. then to bring

  740. other alternative

  741. substitute gods

  742. before the face

  743. of the real God

  744. into the presence

  745. of the living God?

  746. I hope we can all agree

  747. that cheating

  748. on your spouse

  749. is bad.

  750. Right?

  751. It's wrong.

  752. It's an injustice.

  753. Adultery

  754. is a terrible

  755. betrayal of trust

  756. and a form

  757. of treachery

  758. and an expression

  759. of deep dishonor.

  760. And while cheating

  761. on your spouse

  762. is bad

  763. God is more

  764. than our spouse.

  765. God is our king.

  766. And so to bring

  767. an alternative

  768. substitute God

  769. before his face

  770. and into his presence

  771. is basically

  772. saying to him

  773. I would like

  774. this thing

  775. to sit on

  776. your eternal throne.

  777. I would like

  778. this thing

  779. to be my God

  780. instead.

  781. And that's not

  782. just adultery.

  783. That's not just

  784. betrayal.

  785. That's high treason.

  786. He's the king.

  787. God looks and says

  788. you want to put

  789. that little

  790. unworthy

  791. thing

  792. on my eternal throne?

  793. You want me to share

  794. my sovereignty

  795. and my supremacy

  796. with that little person?

  797. That little project?

  798. That little thing?

  799. It's offensive

  800. to him.

  801. But you see

  802. the positive

  803. of this

  804. law

  805. is

  806. there in

  807. Deuteronomy 6

  808. and Jesus quotes it

  809. when he says

  810. what this means

  811. is that you're

  812. to love the Lord

  813. your God

  814. with all your heart

  815. with all your soul

  816. with all your mind

  817. and with all your strength.

  818. God wants

  819. your undivided heart

  820. and allegiance

  821. to be given

  822. wholly to him.

  823. He does not

  824. want to share you

  825. with another

  826. would-be

  827. king

  828. or lord

  829. or master.

  830. He wants to have you

  831. absolutely

  832. without any conditions

  833. without any exceptions

  834. under all circumstances

  835. always

  836. and everywhere.

  837. He wants

  838. every part of you.

  839. He wants

  840. everything you are.

  841. He wants

  842. everything

  843. you have.

  844. He wants

  845. your total

  846. and complete

  847. commitment

  848. of trust

  849. and obedience

  850. that is unreserved

  851. and unwavering

  852. in whatever

  853. the circumstances.

  854. What God

  855. is saying here

  856. is I want you

  857. to depend

  858. on me

  859. for everything.

  860. I want you

  861. to come to me

  862. with all of your needs.

  863. I want you

  864. to love me

  865. with all of your thinking.

  866. I want you

  867. to love me

  868. with all of your longing.

  869. I want you

  870. to love me

  871. with all of your striving.

  872. I want you

  873. to make me first.

  874. Make me central

  875. in your life.

  876. And I want you

  877. to be willing

  878. to give up

  879. anything

  880. that would go

  881. against me

  882. and against my will

  883. in any way.

  884. Friends,

  885. have you put

  886. the full weight

  887. of your trust

  888. on God alone?

  889. Is your heart

  890. clinging to him

  891. and holding

  892. fast to him

  893. for dear life?

  894. have you put

  895. him first

  896. above all

  897. the other loves?

  898. Are you reordering

  899. and rearranging

  900. all your other loves

  901. under this supreme

  902. love?

  903. And are you

  904. giving thanks

  905. to him

  906. in all things?

  907. That's the substance

  908. of this law.

  909. But let me move

  910. from the nature

  911. of God's law

  912. and the substance

  913. of God's law

  914. finally to the purpose

  915. of God's law.

  916. As I've been

  917. reading about

  918. this law

  919. all week,

  920. I've been thinking

  921. about people

  922. in the Bible

  923. that actually

  924. obeyed this command.

  925. Who can you

  926. think of

  927. that put God

  928. first and had

  929. God central

  930. in their loves?

  931. I think about

  932. Abraham

  933. who was

  934. willing to

  935. give up

  936. the best gift

  937. that God

  938. had given him.

  939. He was willing

  940. to give up

  941. his own

  942. treasured son

  943. out of love

  944. for God.

  945. I think about

  946. David

  947. who said

  948. who loved

  949. God so much

  950. he said

  951. I thirst

  952. for you God.

  953. You and you

  954. alone are my

  955. rock

  956. and my salvation.

  957. You

  958. are my refuge

  959. and my strength.

  960. You

  961. are my good.

  962. I have no other

  963. good apart

  964. from you.

  965. I think about

  966. Daniel

  967. who loved

  968. God so much

  969. he would

  970. rather be

  971. thrown to the

  972. lions.

  973. He would

  974. rather die

  975. than to stop

  976. getting on

  977. his knees

  978. three times

  979. a day

  980. to pray

  981. to God,

  982. to thank

  983. God,

  984. to call

  985. on God

  986. for help.

  987. And I think

  988. about these

  989. people in the

  990. Bible who

  991. love God,

  992. Abraham and

  993. David and

  994. Daniel,

  995. and I look

  996. at my life

  997. next to them

  998. and it

  999. feels like

  1000. I barely

  1001. love God

  1002. at all.

  1003. And I

  1004. don't just

  1005. compare my

  1006. life with

  1007. them,

  1008. but I

  1009. begin to

  1010. look into

  1011. the mirror

  1012. of God's

  1013. law of

  1014. love and

  1015. when I

  1016. look closely

  1017. into this

  1018. mirror,

  1019. you shall have

  1020. no other

  1021. gods before

  1022. me,

  1023. I begin to

  1024. see there's

  1025. a lot of

  1026. dirt on my

  1027. face.

  1028. There's quite

  1029. a number of

  1030. flaws that

  1031. from a distance

  1032. you couldn't

  1033. really see,

  1034. but now I

  1035. can see

  1036. there's some

  1037. serious

  1038. problems.

  1039. I fall

  1040. so far

  1041. short

  1042. of the

  1043. standard

  1044. of humanity

  1045. for which

  1046. God made

  1047. me and

  1048. when I

  1049. look into

  1050. the law,

  1051. I can

  1052. see,

  1053. oh my

  1054. goodness,

  1055. I need

  1056. to be

  1057. cleansed.

  1058. Oh my

  1059. goodness,

  1060. there's

  1061. something

  1062. broken in

  1063. me that

  1064. needs to

  1065. be healed.

  1066. There's

  1067. something

  1068. deeply

  1069. wrong in

  1070. me that

  1071. needs to

  1072. be

  1073. forgiven

  1074. and

  1075. that's

  1076. the

  1077. first

  1078. purpose

  1079. of

  1080. God's

  1081. law is

  1082. to show

  1083. us

  1084. our sin

  1085. and our

  1086. need for

  1087. God.

  1088. But the

  1089. second

  1090. purpose

  1091. of God's

  1092. law is

  1093. to drive

  1094. me to

  1095. Jesus.

  1096. It's to

  1097. drive me

  1098. to Jesus

  1099. because

  1100. Jesus is

  1101. this God

  1102. of Mount

  1103. Sinai

  1104. who came

  1105. down from

  1106. the mountain

  1107. in the

  1108. flesh

  1109. and he's

  1110. the only

  1111. person in

  1112. the Bible

  1113. and in

  1114. history

  1115. who embodied

  1116. God's

  1117. commands

  1118. and obeyed

  1119. God's

  1120. commands

  1121. wholly

  1122. and consistently

  1123. every day,

  1124. all day,

  1125. his whole

  1126. life.

  1127. He succeeded

  1128. in God's

  1129. law

  1130. at every

  1131. point

  1132. where we

  1133. fail.

  1134. He

  1135. perfectly,

  1136. think about

  1137. that,

  1138. he perfectly

  1139. fulfilled

  1140. God's

  1141. law,

  1142. not only

  1143. by the

  1144. active

  1145. obedience

  1146. of his

  1147. life,

  1148. but also

  1149. in the

  1150. passive

  1151. obedience

  1152. of giving

  1153. up his

  1154. life to

  1155. death on

  1156. the cross.

  1157. When he

  1158. did that,

  1159. he took

  1160. all of our

  1161. sins on

  1162. his shoulders,

  1163. all the

  1164. ways that

  1165. we fall

  1166. short of

  1167. God's

  1168. design and

  1169. desires for

  1170. our life,

  1171. all the

  1172. ways that

  1173. we take

  1174. his commands

  1175. and we

  1176. just trespass

  1177. them and

  1178. do what

  1179. we want

  1180. anyway,

  1181. all the

  1182. ways that

  1183. we subvert

  1184. his moral

  1185. order,

  1186. Jesus absorbed

  1187. all of

  1188. those failures

  1189. in his

  1190. body on

  1191. his cross.

  1192. And we

  1193. know from

  1194. psychologists,

  1195. psychologists

  1196. tell us that

  1197. the worst

  1198. thing that

  1199. can happen

  1200. to you

  1201. is to

  1202. be forsaken

  1203. by someone

  1204. that you

  1205. love.

  1206. That's the

  1207. worst thing

  1208. that can

  1209. happen to

  1210. you is to

  1211. be forsaken

  1212. by somebody

  1213. that you

  1214. love.

  1215. And yet on

  1216. the cross,

  1217. Jesus, as he

  1218. was shedding

  1219. his blood

  1220. for us, he

  1221. cried out,

  1222. my God, my

  1223. God, why

  1224. have you

  1225. forsaken

  1226. me?

  1227. Now, why

  1228. did he say

  1229. that on the

  1230. cross?

  1231. We

  1232. forsaken

  1233. God and

  1234. therefore we

  1235. deserve to be

  1236. forsaken by

  1237. God.

  1238. Jesus never

  1239. forsook God

  1240. and yet he's

  1241. saying, my

  1242. God, my

  1243. God, why

  1244. have you

  1245. forsaken

  1246. me?

  1247. And you

  1248. see, when

  1249. Jesus says

  1250. that, he's

  1251. fulfilling

  1252. God's law

  1253. by allowing

  1254. himself to

  1255. be forsaken

  1256. in our

  1257. place.

  1258. He's taking

  1259. the penalty

  1260. for our

  1261. sins by

  1262. living the

  1263. life we

  1264. should have

  1265. lived, by

  1266. dying the

  1267. death that

  1268. we should

  1269. have died.

  1270. He's

  1271. fulfilling

  1272. God's law.

  1273. He's taking

  1274. the curse that

  1275. we deserved

  1276. and he's

  1277. giving us

  1278. the blessing

  1279. that he

  1280. deserved.

  1281. And that's

  1282. how he

  1283. loved God

  1284. with all of

  1285. his heart

  1286. and loved

  1287. his neighbor

  1288. as himself.

  1289. He's

  1290. cleansing our

  1291. guilt.

  1292. He's

  1293. covering over

  1294. our shame.

  1295. He's taking

  1296. the wages

  1297. of sin,

  1298. which is

  1299. death.

  1300. And instead

  1301. of having

  1302. us have

  1303. our blood

  1304. shed, he's

  1305. having his

  1306. blood shed

  1307. so he can

  1308. deal with the

  1309. debt of our

  1310. sin in

  1311. full.

  1312. So the

  1313. first purpose

  1314. of the

  1315. law is to

  1316. show us

  1317. our sin

  1318. and the

  1319. second purpose

  1320. of the

  1321. law is to

  1322. drive us

  1323. to Jesus.

  1324. To drive us

  1325. to the only

  1326. one who can

  1327. deal with our

  1328. sin.

  1329. But the

  1330. third purpose

  1331. of the

  1332. law is to

  1333. give us a

  1334. blueprint for

  1335. our freedom.

  1336. It's to give

  1337. us a blueprint

  1338. for how to

  1339. live a life

  1340. of gratitude

  1341. in response

  1342. to God's

  1343. salvation.

  1344. When you

  1345. become a

  1346. Christian, God

  1347. gives you a

  1348. new nature.

  1349. God unites

  1350. you to

  1351. Jesus.

  1352. God fills

  1353. you with

  1354. his Holy

  1355. Spirit.

  1356. And from

  1357. that point

  1358. on, God

  1359. expects you

  1360. by his

  1361. power to

  1362. make a

  1363. moral effort

  1364. to live

  1365. out this

  1366. law of

  1367. liberty.

  1368. Second

  1369. Corinthians

  1370. five says

  1371. the love

  1372. of Christ

  1373. compels

  1374. us.

  1375. The love

  1376. of Christ

  1377. compels

  1378. us to

  1379. live like

  1380. Christ.

  1381. When we

  1382. see what

  1383. Jesus did

  1384. for us,

  1385. when we

  1386. see what

  1387. he did

  1388. in his

  1389. life that

  1390. we could

  1391. not do,

  1392. when we

  1393. see what

  1394. he did

  1395. in his

  1396. death in

  1397. our place,

  1398. well, we

  1399. want to

  1400. please him.

  1401. We want to

  1402. delight him

  1403. because the

  1404. love of

  1405. Christ is

  1406. compelling

  1407. us.

  1408. We want to

  1409. say with the

  1410. psalmist in

  1411. Psalm 119,

  1412. I run in the

  1413. path of

  1414. your

  1415. commands

  1416. because you

  1417. have set

  1418. my heart

  1419. free.

  1420. And so we

  1421. say to

  1422. Jesus,

  1423. Lord, thank

  1424. you so

  1425. much for

  1426. setting me

  1427. free.

  1428. Now let me

  1429. run in the

  1430. path of

  1431. your commands.

  1432. I want to

  1433. have no

  1434. other God

  1435. before the

  1436. living God.

  1437. I want to

  1438. love the

  1439. Lord my

  1440. God with

  1441. all my

  1442. heart,

  1443. with all

  1444. my soul,

  1445. with all

  1446. my mind,

  1447. and with

  1448. all my

  1449. strength.

  1450. may God

  1451. enable us

  1452. to live

  1453. this way.

  1454. In the

  1455. name of

  1456. the Father,

  1457. Son,

  1458. and Holy

  1459. Spirit,

  1460. Amen.
