  1. Well, good evening. Please do turn back to that passage in 1 John that was read to us earlier.

  2. 1 John chapter 1.

    1 John 1 chapter mention

  3. Tonight we're going to be in verse 5 onwards.

  4. ! But I do want to begin just by reading those first four verses again, John's prologue to his letter.

  5. So let's bow our heads and ask for God's help, and then I'll read verses 1 to 4.

  6. Our Heavenly Father, we thank you for this letter of 1 John that you have caused to be written for our good.

  7. And now we pray that you would give us ears to hear your word tonight,

  8. and that you would use it to feed our hearts and to bless us for our eternal good.

  9. We ask this in Jesus' name. Amen.

  10. So 1 John 1 verse 1.

    1 John 1:1

  11. 1 John 1 verse 1.

    1 John 1:1

  12. 1 John 1 verse 1.

    1 John 1:1

  13. But John also makes clear in those first four verses that that fellowship with Jesus and through him with God

  14. is only possible through the message of the apostles, those first disciples.

  15. A lot like John, handpicked by Jesus to be his witnesses,

  16. and then empowered by his Spirit to proclaim his saving work.

  17. but that of course begs the question

  18. what is the message of the apostles

  19. by which we can enjoy fellowship with God

  20. and it's that question that John goes on to answer

  21. in these verses I want to focus on this evening

  22. beginning at verse 5

  23. this is the message

  24. we have heard from him

  25. and proclaim to you

  26. that God is light

  27. and in him is no darkness at all

  28. and we can sum up what follows under three headings

  29. three foundational truths

  30. to grasp and hold firmly to

  31. if we are to enjoy genuine fellowship with God

  32. and we've read the first already

  33. number one God is light

  34. God is light

  35. and in him is no darkness at all

  36. so John begins that verse

  37. by reminding us of his unique apostolic authority

  38. that is this is the message we have heard from him

  39. and proclaim to you

  40. and as what he's teaching us

  41. isn't something he or any other human thinker

  42. has dreamt up

  43. but what he heard and received from Jesus

  44. and that message begins

  45. just like our universe

  46. with God

  47. and light

  48. only here God doesn't just create the light

  49. he is

  50. the light

  51. light speaks of God's goodness

  52. of how like the sun

  53. he constantly pours forth life and energy and blessing

  54. on his creatures

  55. light speaks of God's truth

  56. how like the sun

  57. he's the source of all light and knowledge

  58. in the words of C.S. Lewis

  59. I believe in God as I believe in the sun

  60. not only because I see it

  61. but because by it

  62. I see everything else

  63. but above all light speaks of God's absolute moral purity

  64. God is light

  65. and in him

  66. is no darkness at all

  67. just as darkness cannot survive

  68. exposure to the light of the sun

  69. so evil

  70. cannot survive exposure

  71. to the holiness of God

  72. he is perfect

  73. perfect in goodness

  74. perfect in justice

  75. perfect in love

  76. and faithfulness

  77. and wisdom and power

  78. and that truth is the starting point

  79. of any fellowship

  80. that we might enjoy

  81. with God

  82. God is light

  83. in fact John makes two great statements

  84. about God in this letter

  85. here

  86. God is light

  87. then chapter 4

  88. God is love

  89. but notice the order

  90. John starts

  91. not with the truth

  92. of God's love

  93. as we might do today

  94. but with God's holiness

  95. now ultimately

  96. because God

  97. isn't double minded

  98. he's not made up of parts

  99. his love and holiness

  100. are really the same thing

  101. just different facets

  102. different ways of looking

  103. at the same diamond

  104. that is God himself

  105. but the Bible speaks

  106. of God's different attributes

  107. to help our limited minds

  108. to a fuller

  109. more accurate understanding

  110. of his being and character

  111. and the fact that John

  112. starts with God's holiness

  113. is significant

  114. what it means is that

  115. we won't begin to grasp

  116. what is meant by God's love

  117. until we've grasped

  118. what is meant by his holiness

  119. we won't sing and mean

  120. amazing grace

  121. how sweet the sound

  122. that saved a wretch like me

  123. until first we've sung

  124. and meant

  125. holy, holy, holy

  126. Lord God almighty

  127. and whatever

  128. spiritual experiences

  129. we claim

  130. we won't have true

  131. genuine fellowship

  132. with God

  133. until we've faced up

  134. to his absolute

  135. moral purity

  136. the perfection of one

  137. whose eyes are too pure

  138. to look on evil

  139. and who cannot

  140. tolerate wrong

  141. think of Isaiah

  142. when he saw the Lord

  143. in the temple

  144. woe is me

  145. for I am a man

  146. of unclean lips

  147. and I live among

  148. a people

  149. of unclean lips

  150. and my eyes have seen

  151. the King

  152. the Lord almighty

  153. or think of

  154. Simon Peter

  155. on the deck

  156. of his fishing boat

  157. after that miraculous catch

  158. go away from me Lord

  159. for I'm a sinful man

  160. or think of John himself

  161. and his vision

  162. of the glorified Jesus

  163. in the book of Revelation

  164. when I saw him

  165. I fell at his feet

  166. as though dead

  167. God is light

  168. before coming to church

  169. before opening our Bibles

  170. before we pray

  171. before we head into another week

  172. here is where we begin

  173. with the blazing purity

  174. and goodness of God

  175. no fellowship

  176. with sin

  177. apart from that

  178. but as Isaiah

  179. Peter and John

  180. all experienced

  181. meditating on God's holiness

  182. will immediately drive us

  183. to a second

  184. realisation

  185. the second foundation

  186. of true fellowship

  187. with God

  188. namely that we are

  189. sinners

  190. verse 5

  191. this is the message

  192. we've heard from him

  193. and proclaimed to you

  194. that God is light

  195. and in him

  196. is no darkness at all

  197. if we say

  198. we have fellowship

  199. with him

  200. while we walk

  201. in darkness

  202. we lie

  203. and do not practice

  204. the truth

  205. but if we walk

  206. in the light

  207. as he is in the light

  208. we have fellowship

  209. with one another

  210. and the blood

  211. of Jesus his son

  212. cleanses us

  213. from all sin

  214. you know it's like

  215. when you put on

  216. a white t-shirt

  217. or what in the gloom

  218. of your bedroom

  219. you think is a white t-shirt

  220. and then head out

  221. into the sunshine

  222. and realise that

  223. your white t-shirt

  224. isn't white anymore

  225. it's mainly grey

  226. with a little bit

  227. of stale yellow

  228. under the arms

  229. and some spots of orange

  230. from last week's bolognese

  231. that's what it's like

  232. for a sinner

  233. to come into the pure light

  234. of God's holiness

  235. to see God

  236. for who he is

  237. light

  238. is to see us

  239. for who we are

  240. sinners

  241. but of course

  242. that's uncomfortable

  243. so our natural instinct

  244. is to try

  245. and cover up

  246. sin

  247. and in this section

  248. John highlights

  249. three ways

  250. that we might

  251. do that

  252. the first is there

  253. in verse 6

  254. and we could call this

  255. the claim

  256. sin doesn't matter

  257. verse 6

  258. if we say

  259. we have fellowship

  260. with him

  261. while we walk

  262. in the darkness

  263. we lie

  264. and do not

  265. practice the truth

  266. seems there were

  267. those in John's day

  268. divorcing spirituality

  269. fellowship with God

  270. from morality

  271. obedience to God

  272. yes I sin

  273. but my sin

  274. doesn't matter

  275. doesn't impact

  276. my relationship

  277. with God

  278. maybe they thought

  279. that God

  280. is only concerned

  281. with spiritual things

  282. so it doesn't matter

  283. how I live

  284. in everyday life

  285. how I treat my spouse

  286. what I do

  287. with my body

  288. or maybe they thought

  289. well God will

  290. forgive me anyway

  291. so I can carry on

  292. in this sin

  293. today we see it

  294. in that big category

  295. of people

  296. who describe themselves

  297. as spiritual

  298. but not religious

  299. people who want

  300. the apparent benefits

  301. of spirituality

  302. feeling grounded

  303. open minded

  304. peace filled

  305. but don't want

  306. to change

  307. how they live

  308. we see it too

  309. in those churches

  310. whose primary goal

  311. in worship

  312. is to create

  313. a spiritual high

  314. rather than

  315. to be challenged

  316. and changed

  317. by God's word

  318. but if we're honest

  319. we see it in ourselves

  320. and the way we

  321. rope off certain areas

  322. of our lives

  323. from the searching

  324. light of God's holiness

  325. and kid ourselves

  326. that as long as

  327. we're in church

  328. on Sunday

  329. or youth group

  330. on Thursday

  331. as long as we've

  332. read our Bible

  333. and prayed in the morning

  334. we can leave

  335. on one side

  336. the hard

  337. painful work

  338. of daily confession

  339. and repentance

  340. searching our hearts

  341. for unresolved

  342. resentments

  343. unrepented desires

  344. searching our lives

  345. for unyielded habits

  346. and unsurrendered

  347. relationships

  348. well listen to John

  349. or rather the Holy Spirit

  350. speaking through John

  351. as he gives his verdict

  352. on sin doesn't matter

  353. verse 5

  354. this is the message

  355. we've heard from him

  356. and proclaimed to you

  357. that God is light

  358. and in him is no

  359. darkness at all

  360. if we say we have

  361. fellowship with him

  362. while we walk

  363. in darkness

  364. we lie

  365. and do not

  366. practice

  367. the truth

  368. literally that last phrase

  369. is we do not

  370. do

  371. the truth

  372. in other words

  373. the good news

  374. of Jesus

  375. is not something

  376. simply to be believed

  377. in our heads

  378. or even rejoiced at

  379. in our hearts

  380. but something to be done

  381. with our hands

  382. in our lives

  383. lived out

  384. and if we do

  385. the truth

  386. if we bring

  387. our sin

  388. into the searching

  389. light of God's holiness

  390. face up to it

  391. rather than

  392. hiding it

  393. well John has a wonderful

  394. promise for us

  395. verse 7

  396. but if we walk

  397. in the light

  398. as he is in the light

  399. we have fellowship

  400. with one another

  401. and the blood

  402. of Jesus his son

  403. cleanses us

  404. from all sin

  405. more of that

  406. a bit later

  407. for now though

  408. let's move on

  409. to a second way

  410. in which we try

  411. to cover up sin

  412. the claim

  413. that sin

  414. isn't me

  415. verse 8

  416. if we say

  417. we have no sin

  418. we deceive ourselves

  419. and the truth

  420. is not in us

  421. so I don't think

  422. this person

  423. is saying

  424. they never sin

  425. and we'll meet

  426. that claim

  427. in verse 10

  428. this person

  429. is saying

  430. something along

  431. the lines of

  432. yes I sin

  433. but sin

  434. isn't really

  435. me

  436. it's something

  437. I occasionally

  438. fall into

  439. but it's not

  440. who I am

  441. deep down

  442. I don't have

  443. sin

  444. a kind of

  445. sin problem

  446. it's a denial

  447. of what the Bible

  448. calls the sinful

  449. nature

  450. the fact that

  451. each of us

  452. is born

  453. with a heart

  454. that naturally

  455. turns away

  456. from God

  457. and that even

  458. after we become

  459. Christians

  460. that sinful

  461. nature remains

  462. until we die

  463. today we meet

  464. this claim

  465. in the moral

  466. optimism

  467. of secular

  468. humanism

  469. the belief

  470. that humans

  471. are basically

  472. good at heart

  473. and all the world's

  474. problems

  475. stem from

  476. people's

  477. circumstances

  478. bad parenting

  479. poor education

  480. the unequal

  481. distribution of

  482. wealth

  483. sort those things

  484. out and everyone

  485. will be kind

  486. and happy

  487. we see it too

  488. in the church

  489. and the so-called

  490. therapeutic gospel

  491. that's all about

  492. affirming people

  493. making them feel

  494. good about

  495. themselves

  496. rather than

  497. calling out sin

  498. and demanding

  499. repentance

  500. and if we're

  501. honest

  502. again we do it

  503. ourselves

  504. don't we

  505. I lose my

  506. temper with my

  507. children

  508. and then blame

  509. it on the fact

  510. that I'm tired

  511. or stressed

  512. or ill

  513. rather than

  514. recognising that

  515. out of the

  516. overflow

  517. of the heart

  518. the mouth

  519. speaks

  520. or I'm caught

  521. in a lie

  522. or I commit

  523. some very

  524. public sin

  525. and I see it

  526. as a temporary

  527. blip

  528. something I've

  529. fallen into

  530. rather than the

  531. outwork of who

  532. I am

  533. deep down

  534. a sinful

  535. selfish man

  536. with a sinful

  537. selfish heart

  538. if we say

  539. we have no

  540. sin

  541. we deceive

  542. ourselves

  543. and the truth

  544. is not in

  545. us

  546. sin doesn't

  547. matter

  548. sin isn't

  549. me

  550. but the third

  551. lie about sin

  552. is the most

  553. blatant of all

  554. sin

  555. isn't sin

  556. verse 10

  557. if we say

  558. we have not

  559. sinned

  560. we make him

  561. a liar

  562. and his word

  563. is not in

  564. us

  565. so this

  566. seems

  567. is the

  568. complete denial

  569. of sin

  570. as a category

  571. we see it

  572. today

  573. in the way

  574. our world

  575. tells us

  576. that it's

  577. psychologically

  578. damaging

  579. to think

  580. of yourself

  581. as a sinner

  582. rather than

  583. seeing my

  584. heart as

  585. fundamentally

  586. flawed

  587. and deceptive

  588. I'm told

  589. follow your

  590. heart

  591. be who you

  592. want to be

  593. live how you

  594. want to live

  595. do what you

  596. want to do

  597. you do you

  598. which if you

  599. think about it

  600. is the very

  601. essence of sin

  602. only now we're

  603. told it's right

  604. and good

  605. and healthy

  606. but it's not

  607. just the world

  608. that no longer

  609. calls sin

  610. sin

  611. large parts

  612. of the church

  613. are busy

  614. affirming

  615. and celebrating

  616. lifestyles

  617. sexual orientations

  618. that the Bible

  619. clearly condemns

  620. as sinful

  621. and destructive

  622. even parts

  623. of the evangelical

  624. church

  625. no longer

  626. treat the

  627. desire for

  628. sin as

  629. itself

  630. a sin

  631. that needs

  632. to be

  633. confessed

  634. and turned

  635. away from

  636. and we do

  637. it ourselves

  638. too

  639. don't we

  640. every day

  641. we cover up

  642. our sin

  643. by telling

  644. ourselves

  645. it's not

  646. sin

  647. I'm not

  648. angry

  649. we shout

  650. at our

  651. spouse

  652. I didn't

  653. mean that

  654. when caught

  655. in a lie

  656. I was only

  657. joking

  658. when we said

  659. something

  660. unkind

  661. well look

  662. at John's

  663. final verdict

  664. it's the most

  665. damning of

  666. all

  667. verse 10

  668. if we say

  669. we have

  670. not sinned

  671. we make

  672. him

  673. God

  674. a liar

  675. and his

  676. word is

  677. not in

  678. us

  679. notice the

  680. progression

  681. from lying

  682. to others

  683. verse 6

  684. to deceiving

  685. ourselves

  686. verse 8

  687. to making

  688. God out

  689. to be a

  690. liar

  691. in verse

  692. 10

  693. when we

  694. redefine

  695. sin

  696. whether it's

  697. church leaders

  698. declaring

  699. sinful

  700. lifestyles

  701. permissible

  702. or you

  703. and me

  704. telling ourselves

  705. that what we

  706. just did

  707. wasn't actually

  708. sin

  709. we are in

  710. effect declaring

  711. that God

  712. whose word

  713. is crystal

  714. clear

  715. on what

  716. is right

  717. and what

  718. is wrong

  719. we're declaring

  720. him to be

  721. a liar

  722. which is

  723. surely an

  724. even greater

  725. sin than

  726. the one

  727. we're trying

  728. to cover

  729. up

  730. but the

  731. greatest

  732. tragedy

  733. is that

  734. such

  735. denial

  736. of sin

  737. robs us

  738. of the

  739. joy

  740. and peace

  741. and blessing

  742. that can

  743. be ours

  744. when we

  745. own up

  746. and confess

  747. our sin

  748. to God

  749. which brings

  750. us to the

  751. third ingredient

  752. of the

  753. apostolic

  754. gospel

  755. the third

  756. essential

  757. foundation

  758. of genuine

  759. fellowship

  760. with God

  761. there is

  762. a saviour

  763. there is

  764. a saviour

  765. so each

  766. of the

  767. claims that

  768. John

  769. refutes

  770. is followed

  771. by a

  772. glorious

  773. promise of

  774. forgiveness

  775. for those

  776. who come

  777. clean

  778. verse 7

  779. if we walk

  780. in the light

  781. as he is in

  782. the light

  783. the blood

  784. of Jesus

  785. his son

  786. purifies us

  787. from all

  788. sin

  789. it's a picture

  790. of being

  791. washed

  792. completely

  793. clean

  794. that grubby

  795. t-shirt

  796. of our

  797. sinful

  798. heart

  799. now

  800. spotless

  801. and white

  802. through

  803. Jesus'

  804. death

  805. for sins

  806. or verse

  807. 9

  808. if we

  809. confess

  810. our sins

  811. he's

  812. faithful

  813. and just

  814. to forgive

  815. us our

  816. sins

  817. and to

  818. cleanse

  819. us from

  820. all

  821. unrighteousness

  822. so that

  823. picture of

  824. washing

  825. and cleansing

  826. is out of the

  827. picture of a

  828. debt being

  829. forgiven

  830. or cancelled

  831. we no

  832. longer owe

  833. anything to

  834. God

  835. for our

  836. sin

  837. other than

  838. our gratitude

  839. to Jesus

  840. for paying

  841. it all

  842. and then

  843. chapter 2

  844. verse 1

  845. my dear

  846. children

  847. I am writing

  848. these things

  849. to you

  850. so that

  851. you may

  852. not sin

  853. that is

  854. God's

  855. free forgiveness

  856. there's not an

  857. excuse to

  858. go on

  859. sinning

  860. but a reason

  861. to stop

  862. but

  863. John continues

  864. if anybody

  865. does sin

  866. as John

  867. knows what

  868. we will

  869. we have an

  870. advocate

  871. with the

  872. Father

  873. Jesus

  874. Christ

  875. the

  876. righteous

  877. he is

  878. the

  879. propitiation

  880. for our

  881. sins

  882. and not

  883. only for

  884. ours

  885. only

  886. but also

  887. for the

  888. sins of

  889. the whole

  890. world

  891. and it's

  892. his last

  893. promise

  894. that I want

  895. to home

  896. in on

  897. the promise

  898. of an

  899. advocate

  900. because it

  901. undergirds

  902. and explains

  903. the previous

  904. two

  905. John uses

  906. three titles

  907. for Jesus

  908. in these

  909. verses

  910. that together

  911. proclaim his

  912. glorious

  913. our only

  914. and sufficient

  915. saviour from

  916. sin

  917. so first

  918. this title

  919. of advocate

  920. or we might

  921. say defence

  922. lawyer

  923. the scene

  924. is a

  925. courtroom

  926. we're in

  927. the dock

  928. and by rights

  929. we should be

  930. condemned

  931. but then up

  932. steps are

  933. our defence

  934. lawyer

  935. and we

  936. can't believe

  937. our eyes

  938. it's the

  939. finest

  940. barrister

  941. in the

  942. land

  943. God's

  944. own

  945. son

  946. rising

  947. to speak

  948. on our

  949. behalf

  950. should be

  951. Satan

  952. standing up

  953. to accuse

  954. us

  955. that's how

  956. he's pictured

  957. in the

  958. Old Testament

  959. as the

  960. accuser

  961. of God's

  962. people

  963. but by

  964. dying

  965. and rising

  966. again

  967. Jesus

  968. has cast

  969. Satan

  970. out of the

  971. courtroom

  972. and instead

  973. he now

  974. stands

  975. to plead

  976. our case

  977. and notice

  978. to whom

  979. it is

  980. that Jesus

  981. speaks

  982. verse 1

  983. we have

  984. an advocate

  985. with the

  986. father

  987. or literally

  988. towards

  989. the father

  990. it's the

  991. same phrase

  992. used in

  993. back in

  994. verse 2

  995. of chapter 1

  996. of the

  997. son being

  998. eternally

  999. with or

  1000. towards

  1001. the father

  1002. again

  1003. in John's

  1004. prologue

  1005. as well

  1006. to his

  1007. gospel

  1008. John 1

  1009. 18

  1010. no one

  1011. who's ever

  1012. seen God

  1013. but God

  1014. the only

  1015. begotten son

  1016. who is

  1017. towards

  1018. the father

  1019. speaks of

  1020. God's

  1021. eternal

  1022. relation

  1023. the son's

  1024. eternal

  1025. relation

  1026. to God

  1027. our advocate

  1028. is the one

  1029. person

  1030. more than

  1031. any other

  1032. that the

  1033. father

  1034. loves to

  1035. hear

  1036. and to

  1037. answer

  1038. and that

  1039. name father

  1040. reminds us

  1041. that the

  1042. message of

  1043. the apostle

  1044. is not

  1045. of a

  1046. hostile

  1047. God

  1048. reluctantly

  1049. persuaded

  1050. by his

  1051. loving son

  1052. to forgive

  1053. us

  1054. but of a

  1055. God who

  1056. so loved

  1057. the world

  1058. that he

  1059. is the

  1060. one who

  1061. took the

  1062. initiative

  1063. to send

  1064. his son

  1065. to save

  1066. us

  1067. everything

  1068. in this

  1069. court

  1070. is stacked

  1071. in our

  1072. favour

  1073. the judge

  1074. is our

  1075. father

  1076. the advocate

  1077. is our

  1078. saviour

  1079. but what

  1080. case does

  1081. Jesus our

  1082. advocate

  1083. plead

  1084. for there's

  1085. nothing in

  1086. us that

  1087. deserves

  1088. forgiveness

  1089. well spot

  1090. Jesus'

  1091. second title

  1092. in verse

  1093. one

  1094. we have an

  1095. advocate with

  1096. the father

  1097. Jesus Christ

  1098. the

  1099. righteous

  1100. this title

  1101. the righteous

  1102. or the

  1103. righteous

  1104. point

  1105. it goes

  1106. right back

  1107. to the

  1108. old

  1109. testament

  1110. it was

  1111. originally

  1112. used

  1113. of

  1114. God

  1115. himself

  1116. but it

  1117. summed

  1118. up to

  1119. what

  1120. God

  1121. required

  1122. of

  1123. his

  1124. people

  1125. he

  1126. is

  1127. righteous

  1128. so his

  1129. people

  1130. should be

  1131. righteous

  1132. but open

  1133. the old

  1134. testament

  1135. almost

  1136. anywhere

  1137. and it's

  1138. very clear

  1139. that God's

  1140. people

  1141. the

  1142. Israelites

  1143. were not

  1144. righteous

  1145. that like

  1146. us

  1147. they

  1148. spurned

  1149. and

  1150. disobeyed

  1151. the

  1152. God

  1153. who

  1154. made

  1155. them

  1156. and

  1157. called

  1158. them

  1159. so

  1160. God's

  1161. prophets

  1162. particularly

  1163. Isaiah

  1164. began to

  1165. speak of

  1166. another

  1167. righteous

  1168. one

  1169. a

  1170. coming

  1171. servant

  1172. who

  1173. would

  1174. obey

  1175. God

  1176. perfectly

  1177. by his

  1178. knowledge

  1179. says

  1180. Isaiah

  1181. 53

  1182. my

  1183. righteous

  1184. servant

  1185. will

  1186. justify

  1187. many

  1188. which

  1189. explains

  1190. why the

  1191. apostles

  1192. emphasised

  1193. Jesus'

  1194. sinlessness

  1195. he

  1196. committed

  1197. no

  1198. sin

  1199. and

  1200. no

  1201. deceit

  1202. was

  1203. found

  1204. in

  1205. his

  1206. mouth

  1207. wrote

  1208. Peter

  1209. after

  1210. three

  1211. years

  1212. living

  1213. sharing

  1214. his

  1215. life

  1216. with

  1217. Jesus

  1218. or

  1219. here

  1220. it's

  1221. John

  1222. Jesus

  1223. Christ

  1224. the

  1225. righteous

  1226. from

  1227. Bethlehem

  1228. to

  1229. Calvary

  1230. from

  1231. cradle

  1232. to

  1233. cross

  1234. Jesus

  1235. obeyed

  1236. God

  1237. perfectly

  1238. summed

  1239. up

  1240. in

  1241. God's

  1242. verdict on

  1243. him

  1244. at

  1245. his

  1246. baptism

  1247. this

  1248. is

  1249. my

  1250. son

  1251. whom

  1252. I

  1253. love

  1254. with

  1255. him

  1256. I

  1257. am

  1258. well

  1259. pleased

  1260. as

  1261. Jesus

  1262. stands

  1263. in

  1264. the

  1265. heavenly

  1266. courtroom

  1267. as

  1268. our

  1269. advocate

  1270. it

  1271. is

  1272. not

  1273. our

  1274. good

  1275. record

  1276. that

  1277. he

  1278. pleads

  1279. for

  1280. we

  1281. have

  1282. none

  1283. but

  1284. his

  1285. own

  1286. perfect

  1287. righteousness

  1288. he

  1289. says to

  1290. the

  1291. father

  1292. in

  1293. effect

  1294. father

  1295. count

  1296. my

  1297. righteousness

  1298. as

  1299. theirs

  1300. treat

  1301. them

  1302. as if

  1303. they

  1304. were

  1305. me

  1306. Jesus

  1307. Christ

  1308. our

  1309. advocate

  1310. Jesus

  1311. Christ

  1312. the

  1313. righteous

  1314. one

  1315. final title

  1316. verse

  1317. two

  1318. he

  1319. is

  1320. the

  1321. propitiation

  1322. for

  1323. our

  1324. sins

  1325. so

  1326. we've

  1327. moved

  1328. now

  1329. from

  1330. the

  1331. courtroom

  1332. to

  1333. the

  1334. temple

  1335. or

  1336. tabernacle

  1337. and a

  1338. vast

  1339. queue

  1340. of

  1341. worship

  1342. as

  1343. each

  1344. leading

  1345. an

  1346. animal

  1347. a

  1348. goat

  1349. or

  1350. lamb

  1351. towards

  1352. the

  1353. priest

  1354. and

  1355. the

  1356. altar

  1357. one

  1358. by

  1359. one

  1360. they

  1361. lay

  1362. their

  1363. hands

  1364. on

  1365. the

  1366. head

  1367. of

  1368. the

  1369. animal

  1370. and

  1371. confess

  1372. their

  1373. sins

  1374. and

  1375. one

  1376. by

  1377. one

  1378. the

  1379. throat

  1380. of

  1381. each

  1382. animal

  1383. is

  1384. cut

  1385. and

  1386. out

  1387. flows

  1388. its

  1389. blood

  1390. was

  1391. the

  1392. propitiation

  1393. for

  1394. sins

  1395. the

  1396. turning

  1397. aside

  1398. of

  1399. God's

  1400. wrath

  1401. onto

  1402. that

  1403. animal

  1404. instead

  1405. of

  1406. the

  1407. sinner

  1408. you see

  1409. God is

  1410. angry

  1411. at

  1412. human

  1413. sin

  1414. not in

  1415. the sense

  1416. that you

  1417. and I

  1418. get angry

  1419. irrationally

  1420. flying off

  1421. the handle

  1422. but in

  1423. the sense

  1424. of being

  1425. personally

  1426. opposed

  1427. to

  1428. evil

  1429. and

  1430. justly

  1431. punishing

  1432. it

  1433. but in

  1434. his

  1435. love

  1436. for

  1437. sinners

  1438. God

  1439. has

  1440. provided

  1441. a

  1442. substitute

  1443. a

  1444. propitiation

  1445. his

  1446. own

  1447. son

  1448. to

  1449. bear

  1450. our

  1451. punishment

  1452. suffer

  1453. for

  1454. our

  1455. sin

  1456. endure

  1457. our

  1458. judgment

  1459. our

  1460. advocate

  1461. our

  1462. righteousness

  1463. our

  1464. propitiation

  1465. in

  1466. some

  1467. the

  1468. complete

  1469. saviour

  1470. who

  1471. lived

  1472. on

  1473. our

  1474. behalf

  1475. who

  1476. died

  1477. on

  1478. our

  1479. behalf

  1480. and

  1481. who

  1482. now

  1483. lives

  1484. forever

  1485. to

  1486. plead

  1487. on

  1488. our

  1489. behalf

  1490. look

  1491. again

  1492. at

  1493. those

  1494. earlier

  1495. promises

  1496. in

  1497. chapter

  1498. one

  1499. and in

  1500. particular

  1501. the

  1502. ifs

  1503. that

  1504. John

  1505. attaches

  1506. to

  1507. them

  1508. verse

  1509. seven

  1510. if

  1511. we

  1512. walk

  1513. in

  1514. the

  1515. light

  1516. as

  1517. he

  1518. is

  1519. in

  1520. the

  1521. light

  1522. the

  1523. blood

  1524. of

  1525. Jesus

  1526. his

  1527. son

  1528. purifies

  1529. us

  1530. from

  1531. all

  1532. sin

  1533. and

  1534. verse

  1535. nine

  1536. if

  1537. we

  1538. confess

  1539. our

  1540. sins

  1541. he

  1542. is

  1543. faithful

  1544. and

  1545. just

  1546. and

  1547. will

  1548. forgive

  1549. us

  1550. our

  1551. sins

  1552. and

  1553. purify

  1554. us

  1555. from

  1556. all

  1557. unrighteousness

  1558. if

  1559. we

  1560. walk

  1561. in

  1562. the

  1563. light

  1564. if

  1565. we

  1566. confess

  1567. our

  1568. sins

  1569. they're

  1570. talking

  1571. about

  1572. the

  1573. same

  1574. thing

  1575. to

  1576. walk

  1577. in

  1578. the

  1579. light

  1580. is

  1581. not

  1582. to

  1583. live

  1584. a

  1585. life

  1586. of

  1587. sinless

  1588. perfection

  1589. that's

  1590. impossible

  1591. for us

  1592. this side

  1593. of

  1594. death

  1595. rather

  1596. to

  1597. walk

  1598. in

  1599. the

  1600. light

  1601. is

  1602. to

  1603. come

  1604. to

  1605. God

  1606. in

  1607. all

  1608. his

  1609. holiness

  1610. and

  1611. with

  1612. all

  1613. our

  1614. sin

  1615. it's

  1616. to

  1617. stop

  1618. trying

  1619. to

  1620. cover

  1621. sin

  1622. up

  1623. by

  1624. pretending

  1625. it

  1626. doesn't

  1627. matter

  1628. or

  1629. pretending

  1630. it's

  1631. not

  1632. us

  1633. or

  1634. pretending

  1635. it's

  1636. not

  1637. sin

  1638. and

  1639. to

  1640. allow

  1641. the

  1642. searching

  1643. light

  1644. of

  1645. God's

  1646. purity

  1647. into

  1648. every

  1650. and

  1651. cranny

  1652. of our

  1653. hearts

  1654. and

  1655. lives

  1656. it

  1657. is

  1658. to

  1659. pray

  1660. with

  1661. Psalm

  1662. 139

  1663. search

  1664. me

  1665. God

  1666. and

  1667. know

  1668. my

  1669. heart

  1670. test

  1671. me

  1672. and

  1673. know

  1674. my

  1675. anxious

  1676. thoughts

  1677. see

  1678. if

  1679. there

  1680. is

  1681. any

  1682. offensive

  1684. in

  1685. me

  1686. and

  1688. me

  1689. in

  1690. the

  1691. way

  1692. everlasting

  1693. and

  1694. it's

  1695. then

  1696. to

  1697. confess

  1698. those

  1699. sins

  1700. to

  1701. God

  1702. and

  1703. to

  1704. take

  1705. active

  1707. with

  1708. his

  1709. help

  1710. to

  1711. turn

  1712. away

  1713. from

  1714. them

  1715. and

  1716. to

  1717. live

  1718. in

  1719. obedience

  1720. to

  1721. his

  1722. commands

  1723. now

  1724. for

  1730. be

  1731. for

  1732. the

  1733. very

  1734. first

  1735. time

  1736. to

  1737. put

  1738. our

  1739. trust

  1740. in

  1741. Jesus

  1742. as

  1743. the

  1744. only

  1745. saviour

  1746. from

  1747. sin

  1748. as a

  1763. those

  1764. who

  1765. already

  1766. know

  1767. the

  1769. and

  1770. privilege

  1771. of

  1772. fellowship

  1773. with

  1774. God

  1775. through

  1776. him

  1778. about

  1779. the

  1780. disciplines

  1781. of

  1782. daily

  1783. confession

  1784. daily

  1785. repentance

  1786. and

  1787. daily

  1788. dependence

  1789. for

  1790. if we

  1791. say

  1792. we

  1793. have

  1794. no

  1795. sin

  1796. we

  1797. deceive

  1798. ourselves

  1799. and

  1802. is

  1803. not

  1822. cleanse

  1823. us

  1824. from
