-
Have you ever come across scripture that seems effortless to admire, but far more challenging to obey?
-
One verse that comes to mind is Philippians 4, 6 through 7, which says, do not be anxious about anything.
-
At first, those words can feel impossible.
-
Thankfully, Paul doesn't stop there.
-
He immediately guides us to the answer.
-
In everything by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, present your request to God.
-
In other words, when anxiety rises, we're invited to bring every concern to the one who cares for us.
-
And then comes this beautiful promise.
-
And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
-
Today, let's respond to that invitation.
-
Rather than carrying our worries alone, let's place them in God's hands and ask him to fill us with his peace as we pray together.
-
Let's begin with a full minute of thanksgiving to God.
-
God, remind us of all you've done for us.
-
As we reflect on your goodness and faithfulness, let gratitude rise within us and overflow in our praise to you.
-
What is weighing on your heart today?
-
What is disrupting your peace or making it difficult to rest in the Lord?
-
What fears, worries, or anxious thoughts have been occupying your mind?
-
Take a moment to bring each one before God.
-
Hold nothing back.
-
Tell him exactly what you're carrying, knowing that he already knows and he cares deeply for you.
-
As Paul encourages us, pray about everything.
-
There is nothing too small, too overwhelming, or too ordinary to entrust to the Lord.
-
Now ask Jesus to fill you with his peace.
-
Invite him to guard your heart, the center of your emotions.
-
Ask him to guard your mind, the place where your thoughts, fears, and questions often linger.
-
As you pray, release your burdens into his hands.
-
Then spend the next minute simply resting in his presence, trusting him to do what only he can.
-
As we become more aware of your presence, quiet our anxious thoughts and steady our restless hearts.
-
Teach us to trust you with every burden, knowing that you are faithful and near.
-
We love you, Jesus.
-
Thank you for the gift of your peace, a peace that surpasses all understanding.
-
In your name we pray.
-
Amen.
