Well, good morning.
-
It is so good to see all of you here worshiping with us today.
-
I'd like to welcome all of you here at this campus, but I want to welcome all of our campuses and all of our venues and those of you that are worshiping with us online.
-
If I haven't had a chance to meet you personally, I'm Tony Walliser, one of the pastors here at Silverdale, and I have the privilege today to share with you God's word.
-
So this one I encourage you to do go and take your Bibles, open up in the New Testament to the book of Ephesians.
-
Turn to Ephesians chapter 5.
Ephesians 5 chapter mention
-
Got a smartphone, you can open your Bible app to Ephesians 5.
-
We also have a Silverdale app you can open.
-
But you can also do this: take out these Bible study outlines that we provide for you.
-
We give you these outlines so you can follow along and take notes as we study God's Word together.
-
We are in a series called the One Another Way.
-
And what we're doing is we're looking at these one another principles found in the New Testament.
-
And if we will apply these principles to our relationships, they will transform relationships.
-
Now, why is this so important?
-
Because relationships are hard.
-
Amen.
-
It's true, relationships are hard.
-
There's a classic story from Great Britain about Lady Astor, who is a member of Parliament, and her constant conflict that she had with um Sir Winston Churchill.
-
And one day after a conflict, she says to Churchill, she says, If you were my husband, I'd put poison in your coffee.
-
And Churchill responded, If I was your husband, I would drink it.
-
The fact is, relationships can be hard.
-
And we're looking at these one another principles, and they really can transform relationships.
-
And today's principle is probably the most revolutionary of all that we've seen so far.
-
And it really will make a huge difference in every relationship.
-
What are we going to study today?
-
We're going to learn today how to submit to one another.
-
How do you submit to one another?
-
Another way is how do you yield to someone else and what they need in their life?
-
Let me see if I can put it to you, explain it like this.
-
Have you ever been at a four-way stop before?
-
And you come to that four-way stop and maybe you, you know, come there at the same time as the other vehicle.
-
Now, we in the South, what do we typically do?
-
We go, you go first.
-
No, you go ahead.
-
No, you go first, right?
-
But most of our culture doesn't do that.
-
We're like, I got here first, I'm going first, I'm in a hurry, get out of my way, right?
-
And so that's the way the world is.
-
And yet, what we should do is what?
-
Yield to one another.
-
Now, what the Apostle Paul's gonna do, he's gonna take this principle and apply it to every relationship.
-
Marriage, family, work relationship.
-
Um, but we're gonna look primarily at the marriage application today.
-
I heard a story about a man who had been happily married for 50 years.
-
He was asked, How do you and your wife have a happy marriage for 50 years?
-
And he said, Well, we learn early on that we decided that we were going to try to outserve one another.
-
We'd ask each other a simple question, how can I serve you?
-
How can I help you today?
-
That's the opposite of how our flesh responds.
-
Our flesh responds, I want my way.
-
I want to do it my way, I don't want to do it your way.
-
And so, what I want to do is I want us to study this passage that talks about we are commanded to submit to one another, but I want you to see the whole context.
-
So, this is very important for you to understand this.
-
So, let's look at our passage.
-
It's Ephesians chapter 5, beginning verse 18.
Ephesians 5 chapter mention
-
Notice what God's word says.
-
And don't get drunk with wine, which leads to reckless living, but be filled with the Spirit.
-
And now the Apostle Paul is going to tell us what being filled with the Spirit looks like.
-
First, it affects your speech, speaking to one another in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs.
-
Next, it affects your worship, singing and making music with your heart to the Lord.
-
Then it affects your attitude.
-
Giving thanks always for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, and then filled with the Holy Spirit, affects your relationships, submitting to one another in the fear of Christ.
-
This is the word of the Lord for you today.
-
Thanks be to God.
-
Now, what we need to understand is that those verses were written 2,000 years ago during the Roman Empire.
-
And let me just remind you that yielding to other people, submitting to other people, that was not considered a virtue in the Roman Empire.
-
It was considered a weakness.
-
I mean, in that day, might made right.
-
The word that was most greatly esteemed and recognized that this is how you're supposed to live is domination.
-
Men, dominate your wives.
-
Treat them like their property.
-
Men, you dominate your family.
-
If you don't like a child, you can kill him.
-
If you don't, if a kid offends you, you can sell him into slavery.
-
Masters, you dominate your slaves.
-
That was the culture that this was written to.
-
But then Christ in the church transforms an entire world through a new ethic.
-
And so Paul's going to take this principle of yielding or submitting to one another, and what is he going to do?
-
He's going to apply it to every relationship that we have.
-
Now, let's be honest.
-
This does not happen naturally.
-
In my flesh, I don't want to submit to you.
-
And you don't want to submit to anybody else either.
-
So how do we do this?
-
Well, Paul tells us in the passage we're going to study today.
-
And there's several principles that I want you to jot down.
-
The very first one is this.
-
Number one, first of all, it starts with submission to Christ.
-
It starts with submission to Christ.
-
The only way I'm going to submit to you is if I am first surrendered and submitted my life to Jesus Christ.
-
And when that happens, he fills me with his Holy Spirit.
-
Look at it again.
-
Verse 18 says, and don't get drunk with wine, which leads to reckless living, but be filled with the Spirit.
-
Okay?
-
And so what Paul's going to do here, he's going to talk about what it means to be filled with the Holy Spirit.
-
And what he does is he first does a contrast.
-
He says, Okay, hey, what you need to do is you need to not get drunk with wine, that leads to reckless living.
-
You need to be filled with the Holy Spirit, that leads to godly living, right?
-
When you're under the influence of alcohol, what's going to happen?
-
You know what?
-
It's going to mess up your life.
-
But if you be under the influence of the Holy Spirit, then what's going to happen?
-
It's going to direct your life toward God.
-
So he's basically saying, don't be controlled by booze, but be controlled by the Spirit of God.
-
Allow the Spirit of God to permeate your whole life.
-
Now, can I just tell you, let's be honest, the reason why most Christians do not live godly lives is because they've never learned to live their lives surrendered to Christ and His Spirit.
-
They don't.
-
They're not living a life surrendered to Christ and His Spirit.
-
You go, well, how is it that we we do that?
-
Well, how do how do we even receive the Holy Spirit?
-
Well, that happens at the moment that you gave your life to Christ.
-
And when you heard the gospel, the Bible says you repent and you believe.
-
You turn from yourself, you trust in Jesus Christ.
-
You come to that place of faith where you say, Jesus, I'm surrendering my life to you.
-
Let me be honest with you.
-
If you've never surrendered your life to Jesus Christ, you're not a Christian.
-
That's how you begin the Christian life.
-
Whoever calls on the name of the Lord will be saved, okay?
-
And at that moment that you surrender your life to Jesus Christ, in that moment, Christ comes to live inside of you.
-
He sends his Holy Spirit to live inside of you.
-
The third person of the Trinity takes up residence within you.
-
And you as a Christian, you have the full person of the Holy Spirit, okay?
-
But here's the question.
-
You see it on the screen.
-
Does the Holy Spirit have all of you?
-
You got all the Holy Spirit.
-
Does the Holy Spirit have all of you?
-
Because the truth is we can quench the Spirit, we can grieve the Spirit through our sin and willfulness.
-
And so we've got to learn to live our lives, surrender to Christ, surrender to the Spirit's life in us.
-
Now I've often used an analogy of being filled with the Holy Spirit as like flying a kite, right?
-
I think I've told this story before.
-
But whenever my kids were real young, um, I bought a kite for them.
-
And so we went down into the living room floor and we're putting this little kite together, and we finally attach the little tail to the kite.
-
And the kids are all excited, and they're like, oh, let's go fly the kite.
-
And I go, Well, there's we got a problem.
-
There's no wind outside.
-
And they go, Oh, Dad, let's go fly the kite.
-
And I go, we can't fly the kite, there's no wind.
-
And they go, please, Dad, please, let's fly the kite.
-
Well, in order to appease my kids, I said, okay, let's go try to fly the kite.
-
So we go outside, there's no wind, right?
-
And so what do I gotta do?
-
I'm literally, I got this kite, I got a little string, and I'm running across the yard as fast as I can, and I'm running back and forth as fast as I can.
-
And the kite is just a foot or two off the ground, and my cats, my kids are like, Wow, look at dad fly the kite.
-
He's amazing, right?
-
Well, a few days go by, and um I come home and it's really windy outside, and so I say, Hey boys, come outside.
-
I want to show you what it really looks like to fly a kite.
-
And so I take the kite, I just throw it up in the air, and it takes off, and I just hang on to the string.
-
And I look at them and I say, This is what it looks like to fly a kite.
-
Now, here's the problem with most of us as Christians.
-
We go through life in our own strength, trying to live the Christian life in our own power, and we're running around doing the best we can, and our life is just a foot off the ground.
-
And we look at each other and go, Whoa, you're really impressive.
-
I'm telling you something, that's not how we do this.
-
We live a life surrendered to Jesus Christ, surrendered to his spirit.
-
He then empowers us to do what we cannot do on our own.
-
Okay?
-
So it starts with, okay, we gotta live a life surrendered to Christ.
-
Secondly, is this, which makes only makes sense, Christ then enables us to submit to others.
-
Christ then enables us, he empowers us to live and submit to others and live for others.
-
Now, what's real interesting in the Apostle Paul, he gives this command, be filled with the Spirit, but then he shows you what the results of being filled with the Holy Spirit is.
-
In um the language, it's active participles.
-
So there's one imperative, that's the command, and then there's these active participles.
-
You go, well, how do I know that?
-
I'm not good at English.
-
Well, all you gotta do is when you read the English text, you look for the word ending in ing.
-
That shows you the active participles.
-
And so you know, here's the results of being filled with the spirit.
-
So let me read these verses again and see if you can identify what the results are of being filled with the spirit.
-
Ready?
-
Let's read this passage again, verse 19.
-
Speaking to one another in Psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing and making music with your hearts to the Lord, verse 20, giving thanks always for everything to God the Father in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, verse 21, submitting to one another in the fear of Christ.
-
Did you see it?
-
Right?
-
In case you missed it, I put it right there in the center of your outline.
-
What are the evidences of being filled with the Holy Spirit, right?
-
Well, it affects your speech.
-
You speak to one another with these encouraging words, it affects your worship.
-
Your worship has this heartfelt love and devotion to the Lord as you're singing.
-
It affects your attitude.
-
Suddenly you have you're giving thanks.
-
You have an attitude of gratitude.
-
It affects your relationships.
-
What happens?
-
You start submitting or yielding yourself to one another.
-
When you're filled with the Holy Spirit, that is what a Christian life looks like.
-
Those four characteristics.
-
Make sense?
-
So you may go, okay, we're supposed to be submitting ourselves to one another.
-
What does that mean?
-
Well, the Greek word is hup-tasso.
-
And it's two words together.
-
Hupo, which means under, tasso, which means to stand.
-
So it literally means to stand under.
-
I'm gonna put myself under you.
-
I'm gonna yield myself to you.
-
Another synonym may be I'm gonna defer to what you desire, right?
-
Um this past um weekend we had our marriage conference, and I was a part of a small group led by Tim Patrick, and Tim brought out this um this little button here, yes, dear button.
-
And he says, it's been amazing how this has really helped our relationship.
-
And so what's interesting is that everything it says is really a synonym for yielding to your spouse.
-
Okay, let's see if we can find some synonyms.
-
Ready?
-
What a wonderful idea.
-
Yes, dear.
-
Whatever you say.
-
Why didn't I think of that?
-
Okay, so those are just ideas that you go, okay, I'm going to yield to this other person.
-
Now you go, okay, I'll do that if there's somebody that I can trust or yield myself to.
-
Like, okay, Pastor Tony, maybe I respect you enough that I would yield myself to you.
-
But here's what the Bible says.
-
The Bible doesn't say we do that when we respect the other person.
-
No, the Bible says we do that out of what?
-
Out of respect for Jesus Christ.
-
You see, this is the way Jesus did it, and he commands us to be that way.
-
So, in reverence to Christ, I'm gonna choose to live this way.
-
Now, there's a real interesting story in the Gospels where you have um the um two of Jesus' disciples come to Jesus, they're James and John.
-
And they said, Lord, we know you're the Messiah.
-
We know that one day you're gonna set up your glorious kingdom.
-
And whenever you set up your glorious kingdom, we just have one little small request.
-
Whenever you set up your glorious kingdom, we want to sit on your right hand and on your left.
-
All right?
-
We want the top jobs in glory whenever you set up your kingdom.
-
How about that, Jesus?
-
And Jesus basically says, You guys don't know what you're asking for, right?
-
But then he brings all the disciples together and he teaches them what it really looks like to follow him.
-
Check it out, look at what it says in Mark chapter 10.
Mark 10 chapter mention
-
Jesus called them over and said to them, You know that those who are regarded as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and those in high positions act like tyrants over them.
-
Okay?
-
That's the way the Romans operate.
-
That's the way the narcissistic society of our culture operates.
-
Look at verse 43.
-
But it is not so among you.
-
On the contrary, whoever wants to become great among you will be your servant.
-
Whoever wants to be first among you will be slave to all.
-
For even the Son of Man, that's Jesus, did not come to be served, but to serve and to give his life a ransom for many.
-
Jesus said, Stop acting like the Roman Romans.
-
We're not gonna act that way.
-
Their idea is dominate.
-
The Christian life is we're gonna defer.
-
They are all about subjugate.
-
No, we're going to serve.
-
And so Paul takes this principle, okay?
-
We are to submit ourselves to one another, and then he applies it to every relationship.
-
Again, marriage relationship, husbands to wives, wives to husbands, family relationship, you know, children to parents, parents to children, work relationships, masters to servants, servants to masters.
-
He he applies it to everyone.
-
Okay?
-
And in essence, if you ask a single question, it'll help you to have that right attitude.
-
And the single question that you ask is, how can I help you today?
-
Right?
-
A simple question.
-
How can I help you today?
-
How can I make your life easier today?
-
That's the attitude of yielding to somebody else's need.
-
How can I help you today?
-
I mean, if you're an employee, go to work with that attitude.
-
How can I help you today?
-
Go to your boss and say, Man, you work really hard.
-
How can I help you today?
-
And he'll be blown away.
-
Any teenagers here?
-
You want to blow your family away?
-
Go to your mom and dad and say, Mom and dad, you guys work so hard for me.
-
How can I make your life easier today?
-
They're gonna go, Are you on drugs?
-
What is going on here?
-
Maybe they'll buy you a car.
-
I don't know, but they'll be blown away.
-
We need to practice this.
-
So, this is what I want you to do.
-
I want you to turn to somebody next to you, look them in the eye, and say, How can I help you today?
-
Do that right now.
-
How can I help you today?
-
How can I help you today?
-
And so we are to have this yielding, deferring, submitting attitude toward one another.
-
How can I help you today?
-
And so, again, you could apply this to every relationship, but the first relationship the Apostle Paul applies this to is to marriages.
-
So that's what we're gonna do today.
-
Um wouldn't it be awesome if there was just one verse that you could focus on and go, okay, this is the essence of how to make a successful marriage.
-
Wouldn't it be great if there was just one verse that did that?
-
There is.
-
The Apostle Paul summarizes marriage into one verse.
-
Check it out, look at it in verse 33.
-
He says, to sum up, each one of you is to love his wife as himself.
-
And the wife is to respect her husband.
-
Husbands do this, wives do that.
-
When you do that, you are yielding, you are submitting yourselves.
-
This is what mutual submission looks like in a marriage relationship.
-
And so let's get specific, let's apply it to husbands and then wives.
-
Let's start with the men, okay?
-
First of all, draw this down.
-
Husbands submit through sacrificial love.
-
Husbands, you submit through sacrificial love.
-
Now, some men were like, well, I'm supposed to submit to my wife.
-
Yeah.
-
I mean, this whole passage started off with us submitting to one another.
-
That's the whole point here, right?
-
Now, it looks differently, right?
-
We we all of this plays out a little differently.
-
But yeah, a husband is to have this mindset that says, hey, I need to serve the needs of my wife.
-
That's the attitude that every husband should have.
-
See, here's the problem our culture today.
-
Most men have not been discipled to follow Jesus.
-
They've been discipled to follow this world.
-
And so there's different extremes, right?
-
You have some men, I've put this on your outline, some men act like chauvinists, right?
-
I'm in control.
-
I will dominate, right?
-
I will control you.
-
And that's a sinful tendency that a lot of men have.
-
I'm gonna keep you under my thumb.
-
And so these guys act like bullies and thugs.
-
And let me just say something, men.
-
If your wife is afraid of you, you got a problem.
-
And the problem is you.
-
There ain't no way you should act that way toward your wife.
-
There is thousands of broken women who have living their lives in the wake of those kind of chauvinist men.
-
That is not found in the scriptures.
-
It's not Christ.
-
It's one extreme.
-
Dominating men.
-
What's the other extreme?
-
The other extreme is some men act like cowards.
-
Some men act like cowards.
-
They're just passive, right?
-
Okay?
-
They're really nice guys.
-
They'll stand by, but they don't do anything.
-
They're really nice guys, and a lot of women like to marry these kind of guys.
-
Why?
-
Because they can control them, right?
-
But let me just tell you, he's not gonna love you as a wife.
-
He's gonna love you because you're acting like his mama.
-
And he loves his mama and he loves you too.
-
And he's gonna be physically present, but he's not emotionally present.
-
He's too afraid to really stand for anything, okay?
-
So he becomes this passive man.
-
Those are the two extremes of manhood.
-
Both of them are wrong.
-
So, what are we supposed to do?
-
Number three is this real men need to act like Christ.
-
Real men need to act like Jesus Christ.
-
See, the perfect man is Christ.
-
You want to see what real masculinity looks like?
-
Look at Jesus Christ.
-
You want to see what love looks like in a marriage?
-
Look to Jesus Christ.
-
That's what the apostle Paul does.
-
Look at it in verse 25.
-
Husbands, love your wives just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her.
-
We are the bride of Christ.
-
Jesus is our husband.
-
He loves us with what?
-
This incredible sacrificial love.
-
I mean, you look to the cross, there is no greater sign of sacrificial love.
-
Jesus loved us so much he died on the cross for our sins.
-
That is sacrificial love, right?
-
Now, men, husbands, you are to love your wives with that kind of sacrificial love.
-
And can I say, I think that's probably the hardest command in the entire Bible.
-
I'm supposed to love my wife the way Christ loved the church.
-
Yes, with this incredible sacrificial love.
-
Now, some men will go, okay, yeah, yeah.
-
I'll love my wife whenever she's lovely, but are showing me respect, but there ain't no way I'm gonna love her all the time.
-
Well, think about it.
-
When Christ died for us, the Bible says, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
-
Christ died for us when we were at our worst.
-
When we're spitting at him and mocking him, he still said, Father, forgive them.
-
They know not what they do.
-
He loved us with an incredible sacrificial love.
-
Men, that's the way you are to love your wives with that kind of sacrificial love.
-
That means you love your wife when she's lovely or unlovely, when she's kind or when she's critical, when she Makes sense or when she's totally illogical, when she's emotionally high or when she's emotionally low, when she's spending within the budget or when she busted the budget.
-
Whenever she is sexually passionate toward you or when she's sexually cold toward you, you are to be in season, out of season, you are to love her the way Christ loved the church.
-
That's hard, but that's what it means in a marriage relationship.
-
You know what's interesting, the Apostle Paul wrote that 2,000 years ago, and yet all the marriage studies today tell us that that is the primary need that a woman is looking for.
-
Did you know that we're all created equal before the Lord?
-
Men and women, we are different, and we look at life a little differently.
-
So a woman, she'll go through life and she will look through her pink glasses.
-
And her perspective, her grid is different than mine.
-
And she looks at life through her pink sunglasses, and basically, she's always asking this question Are you loving me?
-
Her native language is love.
-
She's looking for love, she's looking for sacrificial love.
-
And everything you do as a husband is viewed through the lens of, is he just doing that for himself or is he really looking out for my best interest?
-
Does he really love me?
-
Does this really show that he loves me?
-
That's the lens she looks at, everything through.
-
That's why, whenever, you know what, you maybe have a birthday or anniversary, and a husband forgets to get a card, and you go, whatever, it was just a card.
-
Well, it may have just, whatever, been a card, but to her, through her lens, it was a sign that you don't really care about her and love her.
-
That's what it meant to her.
-
I mean, think about it.
-
You know, let's say you have two men, and it's their wife's birthday, and they decide to give them a gift.
-
One guy's got a lot of money, you know, maybe not a lot of time and care, but you know what?
-
He buys his wife a new car.
-
And she's like, whoo, I'm excited by that new car.
-
The other guy doesn't have that kind of money, but he gives her time and attention.
-
And so he takes her out to lunch, and they go to the park and they walk, and he listens deeply to her conversation without interrupting her.
-
They sit in a bench, he sees a little smooth rock, and he scribbles a few little I love you's on it and gives it to her.
-
Now, in a few months, the woman with the car is gonna forget all about the appreciation she had, but the woman with a rock is gonna hold on to that rock till the day she dies.
-
Why?
-
Because it communicated how much he loved her.
-
My mom and dad have passed away.
-
And um, this year, going through their stuff, we discovered a box.
-
And it was a box full of every card and letter and note that any of us had ever given to our mom.
-
And every love letter, every note of encouragement my dad ever gave her was in that box.
-
And um, my dad was not really a very verbal affirmation kind of guy, and so he may just write down a two, a couple of little lines, you look good today.
-
She kept it till the day she died.
-
Why?
-
Because my mom was looking through the grid of, is this man, does he really love me or not?
-
That's the reality.
-
Men, you are to sacrificially love your wives.
-
That's what we're called to do in a marriage relationship.
-
So, what does this look like in a wife toward her husband?
-
Well, jot this on your outline.
-
Four, wives submit through consistent respect.
-
Wives, you submit through consistent respect.
-
And so, just like a wife has on her lenses, right?
-
So, us men, we've got our lenses as well.
-
We got the grid that we look through life as well.
-
And so you go, what is that?
-
It is the grid of respect.
-
I mean, basically, every man looks at every conversation through the grid of respect.
-
Why do men get in conflict with each other?
-
Because they feel disrespected.
-
They don't respect me at work.
-
Or, you know what?
-
Um, my neighbor just disrespected me.
-
I'll feel like biting that kid's head off.
-
He's so disrespectful, right?
-
See, everything, all the conflicts that all comes through, I feel disrespected.
-
Well, what did Paul say that wives are to do?
-
Look at it again in um in verse 33.
-
Each one of you is to love his wife as himself, and the wife is to what?
-
Respect her husband.
-
There was a study done of 4,000 men asking them to choose between two really hard questions.
-
One was, what would you prefer?
-
To go through life alone and being unloved, or to go through life feeling inadequate and disrespected by the people around you.
-
Both of those choices aren't good, right?
-
Did you know that 74% said I'd rather, men said I'd rather live alone and unloved than rather go through life feeling disrespected.
-
Why?
-
Because that's the primary need every man has.
-
You know, there's another study done of 7,000 couples, and they asked these couples, when you're in a conflict with your spouse, how do you feel?
-
Men, 83% said when me and my wife are in a conflict, I feel disrespected.
-
72% of women said when I'm in a conflict, I feel unloved.
-
Why?
-
Because that's the primary needs.
-
Now listen, we all need love.
-
Men need love, women need love.
-
We all need respect, right?
-
R-E-S-P-E-C-T, brother, you better give it to me, all right?
-
So we all need respect, we all need love.
-
But there are those primary needs.
-
And so, ladies, let me just give you a little secret about your man.
-
Ready?
-
You see it on the screen, and it's this every man wants to be a hero.
-
Every man wants to be a hero.
-
I mean, basically, us men, we are 13-year-old boys who've grown up.
-
But in our heart of hearts, we want to be a hero.
-
When we were 13, right, we do something and say, hey, mom, look at me.
-
And mom goes, oh, you're amazing.
-
Let me feel your muscle, right?
-
Did you know that?
-
My wife does that all the time around the house.
-
Oh, that was really great, Tony.
-
Let me feel your muscle, right?
-
She's trying to give me some respect.
-
And early on in dating and courtship, it flowed, right?
-
It just, you know what?
-
You glowed with appreciation.
-
He shared his dreams, and you're like, oh, you're amazing, right?
-
But then suddenly something happens after marriage.
-
You're no longer cheering him on.
-
Suddenly he shares his dreams and it puts you in a tizzy, and you go, you just work too many hours, or you don't make enough money.
-
And suddenly your eyes of respect turn into words of criticism, and it's crushing your husband.
-
Um, I love the story told by Evie Hill.
-
He was the pastor of Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Los Angeles.
-
And his wife Jane died of cancer, and he was doing the eulogy at her funeral, and he was basically sharing all the different ways that she made him a better man.
-
And he tells a story of whenever they were just young, he was young in ministry, they weren't making a lot of money at all.
-
And he came home from work one night, and you know, the lights were out, but she had set a candlelight dinner.
-
And he goes, Man, how romantic she is! And so he goes to the bathroom to wash his hands and he turns on the light, and the light doesn't come on.
-
He goes, Is the power out?
-
And she comes to the bathroom and says, Sweetheart, you worked so hard, and we just didn't have enough money to turn the power on.
-
Um, but I thought, why should we talk about that tonight?
-
I'd rather have a candlelight dinner with you.
-
And Evie Hill said in that moment, he realized something.
-
She could have crushed me, she could have demoralized me.
-
She could have said, I never grew up in a home where the husband couldn't pay the bills.
-
She could have ruined me, but she didn't.
-
She said, You work hard, we'll figure it out, but let's eat by candlelight tonight.
-
There are few things that will crush a man's spirit more than thinking he is inadequate for his wife.
-
Listen, ladies, I know your husband doesn't measure up.
-
He is not everything you want.
-
Do you know why?
-
He's a sinner, just like you.
-
He can't measure up to all your expectations.
-
But so many times I see women who put on a superior mask and they start looking down at their husbands, and they feel like it is their need to correct them and criticize them all the time.
-
And your criticism begins to start sounding like disrespect.
-
The marriage is a dance to be enjoyed, it is not a debate to be won.
-
I love the way that um Billy Graham's wife, Ruth Graham, once put it.
-
She said this it's my job to love Billy, it's God's job to make him good.
-
And so, as followers of Jesus Christ, we are to live our lives surrendered to Christ, surrendered to his spirit.
-
His spirit then enables us to die to our fleshly tendency to selfishness.
-
And then he enables us to serve one another.
-
And if you have a couple that will both have that attitude of love toward one another, you'll discover that the marriage becomes one of the most fulfilling relationships on this planet, and many of your deepest me needs are met in that relationship.
-
But it will never happen until you learn to submit to one another.
-
Amen.
-
Let's pray together.
-
Father, thank you so much for your word.
-
I thank you for the way it cuts us because, Lord, it goes against our sinful nature.
-
It goes against our culture.
-
But Lord Jesus, you live this out.
-
Help us to live it out as well.
-
God, you know every person and the sound of my voice, and you know what circumstances they're facing right now.
-
I pray through your spirit, you would order their steps.
-
Would you please heal the relationships as we take on your attitude of yielding and deferring to one another?
-
We pray this in Jesus' name.
-
Amen.
