  1. Now the Bible is full of money management advice.

  2. I don't know if you know this or not, but

  3. there are two books of the Bible particularly, one's called

  4. the book of Proverbs and the other's called the book

  5. of Ecclesiastes, which are filled with the laws of money,

  6. the principles of prosperity. the rules for wealth. Now let

  7. me make it very clear. We are not a, quote,

  8. prosperity gospel church.

  9. We are not.

  10. We do not believe that God wants everybody to be

  11. a millionaire. In fact, Jesus taught the exact opposite of that.

  12. But the Bible is filled with principles that he says,

  13. if you will do it God's way, then you get

  14. God's blessing on your finances. And the Bible is filled

  15. with principles of how to invest wisely, how to save wisely,

  16. principles of saving, of investment, principles of spending, principles of

  17. managing your money, principles of insuring. There are many, many

  18. laws of financial freedom in both Proverbs and Ecclesiastes. Now,

  19. the first law of financial freedom is the one we

  20. have to look at today. Because if you don't get

  21. this one, none of the other ones will work in

  22. your life. I can't take you into the principles of

  23. how to invest wisely how to save, how to spend wisely,

  24. how to budget, all of these principles until first you

  25. get this first one, which I call the law of contentment. Now,

  26. this is very important because as long as your yearnings

  27. exceed your earnings, you're gonna be in deep doo-doo.

  28. You're gonna be in trouble. You're gonna have debt.

  29. And your entire life you're gonna be frustrated with your

  30. finances because your yearnings are always going to exceed your yearnings.

  31. And until you learn this principle of contentment, you're always

  32. gonna be frustrated by your money.

  33. And you're never, never gonna have enough no matter how

  34. much you make.

  35. Now, this is not only a problem for individuals, it's

  36. a problem for our entire nation. The chickens have come

  37. home to roost because for decades, the government has been

  38. spending more than it makes.

  39. Recently, Time Magazine.

  40. Did an article on this and explained that for every $ 1, 000

  41. that Americans make, we put $ 1, 300 on our credit cards.

  42. Hello?

  43. It isn't rocket science to figure out why people are

  44. stressed out. why people are in debt, why people are

  45. going into foreclosure, because our yearnings are exceeding our earnings. Now,

  46. here's what the Bible says. If you pull out your

  47. message notes, and we're going to look in the book

  48. of Proverbs and the book of Ecclesiastes today, the Bible

  49. says in Proverbs 1430, let's read this verse aloud together.

  50. It's healthy to be content, but envy will Eat.

  51. You up, it'll eat you up.

  52. He's saying it's not only financially good for you to

  53. be content, it's actually physically good for you to live

  54. a contented life. The Bible says a heart at peace

  55. gives life to the body. It is invigorating. It is

  56. good for your health to be at peace, to not

  57. always be under tension, to not always be stressed out,

  58. to not always be worried. He said envy, this desire

  59. to always have.

  60. More, will eat you up.

  61. It will eat you alive. You see, when it comes

  62. to your health, it's not just what you eat that matters.

  63. It's what eats you alive. And if your life is

  64. filled with worry or bitterness or guilt or resentment or anxiety,

  65. it's what is eating you that is gonna cause you

  66. to be in bad health. Now another verse in Ecclesiastes

  67. also written by Solomon. These two books were written by

  68. a man named Solomon. Solomon was the wisest man who

  69. ever lived, the Bible says. God says he was the

  70. wisest man who ever lived, so he's got some good

  71. advice for us. He was also the wealthiest man in

  72. the world when he wrote these two books with the

  73. principles of money management in them.

  74. Ecclesiastes 6.9 says.

  75. This, it's better to be satisfied with what you have

  76. than to always be wanting something else.

  77. That's the principle. That's the law of contentment.

  78. It's better to be satisfied with what you have than

  79. to always be wanting something else. Now, the Bible says

  80. that there are five damaging effects that when I want more,

  81. it brings a lot more with it, not just wanting

  82. more material goods. It brings five other things, and they're

  83. all in the book of Proverbs and Ecclesiastes. Number one,

  84. The first effect of always wanting more is that wanting

  85. more brings more fatigue. More fatigue. You're gonna be more tired.

  86. If you're always wanting more, you're always working harder and

  87. you are tired all the time. Being tired all the

  88. time is a symptom of your trying to do too much.

  89. Most people give up their health in the first half

  90. of life in order to get money. They give up

  91. their health in order to get money. And in the

  92. second half of life, they give up all their money

  93. to try to get their health back. Be wise and

  94. figure that out in advance. The first thing is more fatigue.

  95. Proverbs 23, verse 4, the Bible says this. Do not

    Proverbs 23:4

  96. wear yourself out to get rich. Have the wisdom to

  97. show restraint. He says it's dumb, it's stupid, it's foolish

  98. to wear yourself out trying to get more things. Because

  99. even if you win the rat race, you're still a rat.

  100. Now number two, not only does bringing, having more, wanting

  101. more bring more fatigue, it brings more expenses.

  102. Did you know that?

  103. It always costs more to have more. It always costs

  104. more to have more. It brings greater expense. You know,

  105. I always say that if the grass is greener on

  106. the other side of the fence, so is the water bill.

  107. Because somebody had to pay for that green. Now, Ecclesiastes 5.11

  108. says this. The more you have, the more people come

  109. to help you spend it. I like that, it's true.

  110. The more money you got, all of a sudden you

  111. gotta have an accountant, or you gotta have a housekeeper,

  112. or you gotta have somebody.

  113. Mowing your lawn.

  114. The more money you have, the more money you spend,

  115. and it says the more people you have, the more

  116. money you have, the more people help.

  117. You spend it.

  118. So what's the advantage of wealth, except perhaps to watch

  119. it run through your fingers? I saw a bumper sticker

  120. the other day that said, I used to dream of

  121. the salary I'm now starving on.

  122. You know, that's not funny. That's reality.

  123. You used to dream of the salary that you now

  124. are finding it hard to make ends meet on. And

  125. just about the time you get ends meet, somebody moves

  126. the ends. You say, I'm trying to keep up with

  127. the Joneses. Well, don't, because they just filed for bankruptcy. Now,

  128. we think that we don't make enough. We think that's

  129. the problem. We think we don't make enough. The truth

  130. is we want too much. That's the real problem. We

  131. want Too much. And a lot of things we think

  132. are needs are actually just greeds. Now God has said,

  133. my God shall supply all your needs. He has not

  134. said I will supply all your greeds. God is not

  135. obligated to just give you anything you want. So, it

  136. brings more frustration, it brings more fatigue, it brings more expenses.

  137. The third thing wanting more does is it brings more anxiety.

  138. More anxiety, because the more you have, the more you

  139. have to worry about. If you don't have it, you

  140. don't worry about it. You know, I have to be

  141. honest with you. I never, never worry about my yacht

  142. getting barnacles.

  143. I just never worry about it.

  144. Why? Because I don't own a yacht. And if you

  145. don't own something, then you don't worry about it. And

  146. the fewer things you own, the fewer things you have

  147. to repair, the fewer things you have to maintain, the

  148. fewer things you have to insure, the fewer things you

  149. have to pay the taxes on, and all these other things.

  150. And now we have so many things you can't even

  151. keep it in your house, you have to buy a

  152. place to rent to store the things. Now what's the

  153. logic of that one? You're paying rent on stuff you're

  154. not even using. Okay, so more anxiety. The more you have,

  155. the more you worry about. Ecclesiastes 5.12. A working man

  156. can get a good night's sleep, but the rich man

  157. has so much that he stays awake worrying.

  158. What's he worrying about?

  159. How to save it, how to invest it, how to

  160. maintain it, how to insure it, how to avoid taxes.

  161. I read a study once that said insomnia increases with income.

  162. Isn't that interesting?

  163. That the more money you make, the more likely it

  164. is you are to have sleepless nights.

  165. Why? Because you worry about more. You got more to

  166. worry about.

  167. Now, if you have more fatigue plus more expenses plus

  168. more anxiety, you know what that equals? Number four, more conflict.

  169. You're going to have more conflict in your home because

  170. of these things. Because when you're tired and you got

  171. more expenses and you're more anxious, you get in more fights.

  172. You have more conflict. It causes more turmoil in your family.

  173. Proverbs 15, 27 says, a greedy man brings trouble to

  174. his family. And we know that today the number one

  175. cause of divorce is financial tension. Every study shows this.

  176. The number one cause of divorce is people divorce over money,

  177. money issues. It is now till debt do us part.

  178. First Timothy six says this, People who long to be

  179. rich fall into temptation and are trapped by many foolish

  180. and harmful desires that plunge them into ruin. He's talking

  181. about debt, financial ruin, and destruction.

  182. Why?

  183. Because when you long to be rich, you are a

  184. sucker for get rich quick schemes. If you are contented,

  185. you don't fall prey to get rich quick schemes. Nobody

  186. can scam you. You're not going to take risky things

  187. because you are contented. People who are discontent are always

  188. looking for a way to make a fast buck. They're

  189. always looking for the get rich quick scheme. They're always

  190. looking for the fast solution, the double your return on

  191. your money instantly and all of that. And the Bible

  192. says over and over and over and over again, we'll

  193. see this when we get to investments, do not ever

  194. get involved in get rich quick schemes.

  195. If it's too good to be true, it is. Hi, everybody.

  196. This is Pastor Rick.

  197. Because of the generous support of many of you Daily

  198. Hope listeners, we're able to offer Daily Hope devotionals for

  199. free worldwide. In fact, today I have a note from

  200. Paul in Kenya that shows how God is at work

  201. through the Daily Hope devotionals. Paul wrote me, he said,

  202. I'd like to sincerely thank you for the free gift

  203. of your Daily Hope devotionals. May God receive all the glory.

  204. For some time now, your inspiring and encouraging messages, along

  205. with scripture references, have helped me push through some really

  206. tough times and get closer to God. However, Paul writes,

  207. the best part is that my faith in God has

  208. now grown to the point that he recently gave me

  209. the strength and wisdom to accept his free undeserved gift

  210. of grace and salvation by accepting and confessing Jesus Christ

  211. as my Lord and Savior. I feel like a new being.

  212. And I yearn to keep growing more and more in

  213. God's Word and in wisdom, surrendering my life to His

  214. will alone. So please, hold my hand in this journey

  215. to the glory and honor of God through Christ Jesus. Paul,

  216. without a doubt, I will hold your hand as you

  217. journey with Jesus. There is no greater decision that you

  218. could have made than believing and receiving Jesus Christ. So Congratulations,

  219. you're my brother in Christ. And I want to encourage

  220. you to be on the lookout every day to see

  221. how God guides you, how God directs you. It's an

  222. exciting journey. And by the way, keep studying his word

  223. every day. Get a Bible and read it every day.

  224. I'm so thankful that Daily Hope Devotional is helping you

  225. to do just that. Now, the Daily Hope Devotional is

  232. Warren Buffett, you know, the wealthiest man in the world.

  233. His number one rule of investment.

  234. You know what it is? Very simple. Buffett's number one

  235. rule is this.

  236. Never lose the money you've already earned. In other words,

  237. it's more important to keep what you've got than to

  238. take the big risk on it.

  239. Never lose.

  240. It doesn't matter if you make a high return. If

  241. you keep losing stuff, you're going backwards over time. Buffett's

  242. number one rule for becoming a billionaire, never lose what

  243. you've already earned. And yet people lose it all the

  244. time in an attempt to get rich quick.

  245. And it's foolish.

  246. I have to tell you, Kay and I have never

  247. lost a penny to get rich quick schemes.

  248. I've never lost a penny that I've earned. on the lottery.

  249. I've never lost a penny in.

  250. Vegas. Why? Because I'm not about to involve myself in

  251. those easy come, easy go, get rich quick schemes, which really,

  252. you're going to lose it. You may as well just

  253. go to Vegas and just hand them the money and

  254. come home. The house is going to win. Somebody pays

  255. for those tall buildings.

  256. It's you.

  257. You pay for it. And the odds are not in

  258. your favor. And the Bible says that's foolish when a

  259. contented person is not lured, ever lured by the lottery

  260. because you're contented. So you're keeping what you've got. And

  261. as I said last week, Albert Einstein said, the single

  262. most powerful force in the universe is the power of

  263. compounding interest. that you set it away a little bit

  264. at a time and you let compounding interest, it'll make

  265. you rich.

  266. Not instantly, but over time.

  267. I started putting away 50 cents a week toward my

  268. retirement at age 17. And that's why I've served this

  269. church for free for 10 years. Because essentially I retired

  270. 10 years ago. Because I don't have to take a salary. Why?

  271. Because I had been saving since I was a teenager.

  272. And the power of compounding interest builds up over time.

  273. It's called the little by little principle. We'll look at that. Now,

  274. he says you're gonna get trapped if you're not contented. Now,

  275. there's one other problem that happens. The effect of always

  276. wanting more is that wanting more brings more dissatisfaction. It brings,

  277. number five, more dissatisfaction. You see, we think having more

  278. will make me more happy. Having more will make me

  279. more secure. Having more will make me more important. Having

  280. more will make me more loved. None of that is true. Now,

  281. it is true that you can buy happiness for short term,

  282. but it doesn't last.

  283. The feelings don't last. They go away very quickly. It's true.

  284. You can go out and buy a new car, and

  285. when you get that new car, you're gonna be happy.

  286. You can buy happiness for a short period of time.

  287. And you'll be happy, and you get in the car,

  288. and it smells, you know that new car smell?

  289. Ah.

  290. But how long does that new car smell? About a

  291. couple weeks. And then, you know, the moment you drove

  292. it off the lot, it was less $ 10, 000 than what

  293. you paid for it. because it's not new anymore. You

  294. just lost $ 10, 000 in equity just right there, bam, just

  295. like that. And then in a couple years, you don't

  296. care about it anymore. Now this is true with everything

  297. you buy. You go out and you buy a piece

  298. of art, and you go, man, I just love that art.

  299. And you put it up in your house, and it's beautiful,

  300. and it looks so great, and it makes you happy

  301. for a while. But after a while, you're not happy anymore.

  302. And you get new drapes, and you love those drapes,

  303. but after a while, you're not happy anymore. Why? Because things,

  304. people change and things don't. Things don't change. So we

  305. get bored with them and we have to redecorate and

  306. we have to remodel and we have to refurbish and

  307. we have to rearrange and we have to replace and

  308. we are addicted to upgrades. Ecclesiastes 5.10 says this. It

  309. says if you love money, you will never be satisfied.

  310. If you long to be rich, You will never get

  311. all you want. Somebody asked, how much does it take

  312. to make a man happy? He said, just a little more.

  313. He said, it's useless. He says, you will never be satisfied. 2,000

  314. years before that great theologian Mick Jagger, Solomon was saying,

  315. I can't get no satisfaction. And he's the wealthiest man

  316. in the world when he is writing this. He's not

  317. some poor guy. He got more than you or I

  318. will ever even imagine. He says, you'll never be satisfied.

  319. Living Bible says it's foolish to think that wealth brings happiness.

  320. So let me ask you a question. Just get gut

  321. level honest here. How many of you would say, I

  322. would like to live a life of less fatigue, of

  323. less expenses, of less anxiety, of less conflict and of

  324. less dissatisfaction. How many say, I kinda like to live

  325. that life? Yeah, I think that would be all of us.

  326. You must learn the secret of the law of contentment.

  327. Now Ecclesiastes 6 and 9 says, it's better to be

  328. satisfied with what you have than to always be wanting

  329. something else. That is the law of contentment. Paul talks

  330. about it in Philippians chapter four. Look at the bottom

  331. of your outline. Paul says, I have learned the secret

  332. of being content whether living in peace plenty or in want.

  333. Now, I want you to circle the word secret. It

  334. is a secret.

  335. Most people don't know how to be content. And notice

  336. it is something you have to learn. It is a

  337. secret you must learn. I'm going to teach it to

  338. you this morning. Now, we are not by nature contented people.

  339. By nature, I am discontented. I'm always wanting to change things.

  340. You're always wanting to change things. I'm not satisfied. You're

  341. not satisfied. It is not natural to be contented. You

  342. must learn the secret of being content.

  343. Now, how do you do that? Because it's not automatic.

  344. Well, the Bible tells us that there are four steps,

  345. four keys, four principles to the law of contentment.

  346. Here they are.

  347. Number one, first, stop comparing myself to others. That's the

  348. first step in becoming a contented person. You've gotta stop it,

  349. stop it, stop it. Stop comparing yourself to others. Now,

  350. God made you unique. You're not one in a million.

  351. You're one in billions. Nobody is ever like you. God

  352. doesn't make clones. He never makes copies. Even identical twins

  353. are different. So it's really foolish to think that you

  354. have to be like anybody.

  355. You can't copy anybody else. You're unique. They're unique.

  356. And 2 Corinthians 10, 12 says this. We do not dare.

  357. He says, how dare you do this? It's a rejection

  358. of God. How dare you do this? We don't dare

  359. classify or compare ourselves. It is not wise. He said

  360. it's foolish, it's dumb, it's stupid, it's immature. Now the

  361. problem is, we naturally do it. And we do it

  362. all the time. It is America's favorite indoor sport, comparing.

  363. We love to compare. You walk into somebody's house, And

  364. the first thing you do is you start making comparisons.

  365. Ooh, I like their floor. Ooh, that's kind of nice. Ooh,

  366. look at that drape replacement. Look at that TV. Whoa, wow,

  367. what a television. And you're making.

  368. Comparisons all the time. And that's what keeps you frustrated.

  369. You gotta stop it. If you're gonna learn contentment, you've

  370. gotta stop comparing everything around you. I heard about this

  371. couple in our church who they were in deep financial

  372. problems and they went to small group. And the people's

  373. house was a pretty nice house. And when they left,

  374. she said to her husband as they're driving, did you

  375. see that?

  376. He said, what are you talking about?

  377. She said, their furniture goes back to Louis XIV. He said, yeah,

  378. and ours goes back to Ikea on the 15th. Because

  379. we don't have the money for what we got, so

  380. don't even think about getting their furniture. Don't even think

  381. about it. And we're doing this all the time. I

  382. want you to write this down. I must learn to

  383. admire without having to acquire. That's the principle of contentment.

  384. I must learn to admire without having to acquire. You

  385. need to learn to rejoice in other people's prosperity without

  386. you getting jealous and envious and feeling like you have

  387. to have it too and then being bitter or mad

  388. because they've got something you don't have. You must learn

  389. to admire, wow, that's a nice, painting you've got, wow,

  390. that's a nice backyard you've got, without having to acquire. Now,

  391. this is one of the great principles that Americans don't understand.

  392. I don't have to own it to enjoy it. I mean,

  393. you say, well, I like to go camp out in

  394. the mountains. Well, why do you have to go buy

  395. a mountain cabin when you can just rent it the

  396. one time a year you're gonna go to the mountains, okay?

  397. I don't have to own it in order to enjoy it.

  398. I learned this a long time ago, I don't have

  399. to own it, I just use your stuff.

  400. Which by the way, if.

  401. You got a good mountain cabin, let me know, I'll

  402. be glad to use it for you. Get the cobwebs

  403. out for you, I'll be glad to do that. And

  404. so you don't have to own something. And you may

  405. have a friend in the church who has something you need,

  406. well just borrow it. Don't feel like you gotta go

  407. out and buy everything yourself. You don't, because once you

  408. own it, you gotta repair it, you gotta maintain it,

  409. you gotta store it, and all these other things. I

  410. can learn to admire without having to acquire. Now here's

  411. what you do. The next time you walk into somebody's

  412. house and they got something nice that you don't have,

  413. instead of starting to get discontent and envious, you just

  414. pray a little prayer that says this. Thank you, God,

  415. that I don't have their payments. Thank you, God, that

  416. I don't have their payments. Because they're paying for that.

  417. They're paying for that. And maybe, just maybe, you don't

  418. want to put your money there. Maybe you want to

  419. put it in the bank and save it and make

  420. your money work for you instead of putting it on

  421. your wall where it's not making any money. The money

  422. you put on the wall isn't helping you. The money

  423. you put in the bank and saving is making you money.

  424. While you're sleeping, it's making you money. So, This is

  425. so important.

  426. And when I'm talking to you about stop comparing yourself,

  427. this is not just a good idea to make you happy.

  428. Comparing yourself to other people is a sin.

  429. In fact, it is such a serious sin that God

  430. put it in the big 10. Yeah, the 10 commandments.

  431. It's in there right along with don't murder, which you'd

  432. never do. Don't commit adultery. Don't rip somebody off and steal.

  433. You know what the 10th commandment is? Don't compare yourself

  434. to anybody else. It's there on your outline. It's right there.

  435. Exodus 20, 17. You shall not covet anything that belongs

  436. to your neighbor. Don't look at it and go, man,

  437. I wish I had that. And you start comparing and coveting. Now,

  438. what is coveting? It's a word we don't use a

  439. whole lot today. So let me define it for you.

  440. Coveting means the uncontrolled desire to acquire. That's what it

  441. means to covet. The uncontrolled desire desire to acquire. And

  442. when everything I see and I've gotta get it because

  443. somebody else has got it, that's called coveting. And it's

  444. such a sin, it's right up there with don't murder.

  445. It's that important to God. He says, I don't want

  446. your coveting. Now the word covet in Hebrew, in the

  447. Old Testament, literally means.

  448. To pant after. I gotta have it. It's to pant after.

  449. The word in Greek means to grab or to grasp

  450. so tightly that your hands are tight you can't even

  451. let it go. If God ever gives you something and

  452. he tells you to give it away and you can't

  453. give it away, you don't own it.

  454. It owns you.

  455. Thank you.
