  1. Good morning, church. Would you turn with me to the book of Acts, chapter 2. That is page 855 or 866 in the Pew Bible, depending on which version you have. Acts chapter 2. We're continuing our series in the book of Acts today. Let me pray for us, and then I'll read.

Acts 2 chapter mention Acts 2 chapter mention

  2. O great God of highest heaven, glorify your name in us. We ask for your help as we come to your word, Father, that by your Spirit we would behold all that he is saying to us, your church, to the glory of Christ our King. We pray in Jesus' name, amen.

  3. All right. Let me read Acts chapter 2, verses 1 through 21. Acts 2, 1 through 21. Luke writes this,

    Acts 2:1–21

  4. And they were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.

  5. Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven. And at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered,

  6. because each one was hearing them speak in his own language. And they were amazed and astonished, saying,

  7. Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear each of us in his own native language?

  8. Parthians and Medes and Elamites and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia,

  9. Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabians.

  10. We hear them telling in our own tongues the mighty works of God. And all were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another,

  11. What does this mean? But others, mocking, said, They are filled with new wine. But Peter, standing with the eleven,

  12. lifted up his voice and addressed them, Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem,

  13. Let this be known to you, and give ear to my words. For these people are not drunk, as you suppose,

  14. since it's only the third hour of the day. But this is what was uttered through the prophet Joel,

  15. And in the last days it shall be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh,

  16. and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions,

  17. and your old men shall dream dreams. Even on my male servants and female servants in those days,

  18. I will pour out my Spirit, and they shall prophesy. And I will show wonders in the heavens above,

  19. and signs on the earth below, blood and fire and vapor of smoke. The sun shall be turned to darkness,

  20. and the moon to blood before the day of the Lord comes, the great and magnificent day.

  21. And it shall come to pass that everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

  22. So how is it, how is it, how is it that a small group of frightened, puzzled,

  23. and largely uneducated men and women could so quickly become a force to be reckoned with right

  24. across the known world? How was it that this small group of men and women could, in a few short years,

  25. be said to be turning the world upside down? How?

  26. Well, the answer is right here in Acts chapter 2. Here Luke tells us how the seemingly unsinkable happened.

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  27. He tells us how the church was born and where the church's real power and life comes from.

  28. And the answer is the Holy Spirit. God, the Holy Spirit.

  29. Acts chapter 2 is the account of what we now call Pentecost, the day when the ascended Lord Jesus sent

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  30. the Holy Spirit upon the church in the fulfillment of His promise and in the fullness of His saving work.

  31. This was a day in history from which there was no turning back, a historical event in God's plan

  32. of redemption that marked a new day, the day the Holy Spirit began His new covenant ministry and began empowering the church

  33. for its Christ-given mission.

  34. And that means, like Jesus' death and resurrection then, Pentecost was a unique day, a unique event in history.

  35. But just as we can learn about Jesus' ongoing significance from His life and death and resurrection,

  36. so too we can learn today about the Spirit's ongoing significance from this event, the day of Pentecost.

  37. And it is, is it not, important that we should come to learn about and come to know and come to behold and worship God, the Holy Spirit.

  38. Why? Because He is the reason why there is a church at all.

  39. You see, without the Holy Spirit, there is no proclamation.

  40. There is no mission.

  41. There is no conversions.

  42. There are no Christians.

  43. There is no worldwide Christian movement.

  44. Everything that we have and do that is of any lasting spiritual significance is because of the Holy Spirit.

  45. Without the Holy Spirit, we are like a sailboat without wind.

  46. We are like a stack of wood without fire.

  47. The glorious riches of Christ and His salvation would ever remain removed from us without the Holy Spirit.

  48. The gospel message itself would remain ever foolishness to us without the Holy Spirit.

  49. It is all because of God, the Holy Spirit.

  50. So if, as a church, if as Christians, we are going to look in the right place to learn where the real source of our life and growth and mission come from,

  51. we have to look to God, God the Holy Spirit.

  52. So what does the day of Pentecost show us about the Holy Spirit?

  53. What does this day help us to understand today?

  54. Well, I want to look at three things that the account of Pentecost helps us to understand about the Holy Spirit today.

  55. Here are the three.

  56. Spoiler alert.

  57. We're going to look at the Spirit's power, the Spirit's work, and the Spirit's goal.

  58. Okay, let's consider first the Spirit's power.

  59. We see this in verses 1 through 4 of this passage.

  60. Luke tells us that when the day of Pentecost arrived, the disciples were all together in one place.

  61. Now, what was Pentecost?

  62. Well, Pentecost, long before it described a certain Christian movement of the 20th century that we call Pentecostalism, right?

  63. Long before all that, Pentecost was a Jewish feast.

  64. In the Old Testament, it was called the Feast of Weeks, one of the three great annual celebrations that God commanded His people to hold.

  65. And the Feast of Weeks was a harvest celebration that took place 50 days after Passover.

  66. And that's how it came to be called, in the Greek-speaking world, Pentecost, because the word Pentecost comes from the Greek word for 50.

  67. So, Jews would come to Jerusalem from all over the Roman Empire, all the places where the Diaspora had happened, and there were communities of Jews.

  68. They would come from all over to Jerusalem to celebrate this feast, thanking God for His provision, offering to God the first fruits of their labors,

  69. asking God to bless all of their work to come and the harvest to come.

  70. That was Pentecost.

  71. Now, interestingly, over time, in Jewish history, they had spent 40 days with Him after His resurrection.

  72. They had seen Him ascend to heaven just over a week earlier, and they were waiting, just as Jesus had told them to, waiting for the promise of the Holy Spirit.

  73. And on the day of the feast of Pentecost, the day when the harvest was celebrated, the day when they remembered how Moses went up and ascended on the mountain and came down with God's law,

  74. on that day, the ascended Jesus fulfilled His promise, and the Holy Spirit came in power.

  75. And on this Pentecost, you see, there would be an even greater harvest.

  76. And on this Pentecost, it wouldn't be God's law coming down on tablets of stone, but it would be God's own Spirit coming down, filling them, writing His Word on their very hearts.

  77. And when the Spirit arrives, Luke says, he says it was like wind and like fire.

  78. A sound like a mighty rushing wind fills the house, and what looks like fire comes down and rests on each one of them.

  79. I always thought it was funny as a kid that phrase tongues of fire.

  80. It's a sort of interesting word picture when you think of like, I think he means sort of like, you know, not like literal tongues, right?

  81. But like branches of fire falling down on each one of them, right?

  82. Of course, these images, wind and fire, they're images of what?

  83. They're images of power.

  84. And images that are fitting for the power of the Holy Spirit.

  85. For as Jesus Himself taught in John 3, do you remember?

  86. Jesus says, the wind blows where it wills.

  87. You cannot see it, can you?

  88. But you feel it.

  89. You can feel its effects.

  90. Wind is powerful, even though you can't see it.

  91. And fire, well, fire is something that you can feel.

  92. Fire, you can feel its warmth.

  93. But you can't grab fire with your hands, can you?

  94. It's immaterial, fire itself.

  95. Like wind, God the Holy Spirit is invisible.

  96. Like fire, God the Holy Spirit can't be measured or grasped.

  97. But like storm and like fire, the Spirit of God is powerful.

  98. But this wind and fire speak not just of the power of the Holy Spirit.

  99. Wind and fire in the Old Testament were images of God's own powerful presence.

  100. It was a pillar of fire, was it not, by which God led His people through the wilderness.

  101. It was a mighty wind by which God caused the valley of dry bones to rise in Ezekiel's vision, do you remember?

  102. So with the arrival of the Holy Spirit, God had come.

  103. The third person of the Trinity, awesome in power, eternal, all-knowing, completely good.

  104. The Lord, the Giver of life, the Holy Spirit, who proceeds from the Father and the Son,

  105. who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified,

  106. as the church would eventually come to codify and confess in the Nicene Creed.

  107. But in the context of the book of Acts, what does this powerful presence of the Holy Spirit signify?

  108. What does it mean?

  109. Well, in the context of the story of Acts, it means this.

  110. It means that Jesus Christ is indeed on the throne.

  111. He is indeed the Lord of heaven and earth.

  112. Jesus promised that He would ascend to the Father's right hand,

  113. and He promised to send the Holy Spirit,

  114. the one the prophets of Israel had all spoken of and looked forward to.

  115. And on Pentecost, Jesus fulfilled that promise.

  116. Seated at the Father's right hand, He now reigns.

  117. You see, in His ascended humanity, Jesus had forged the broken link between earth and heaven because of our sin.

  118. And now, by sending the Spirit from the Father, heaven was coming to earth,

  119. and the reign of our King had begun.

  120. And just as the Spirit hovered over the waters of the original creation in Genesis 1,

  121. bringing order and beauty and life,

  122. So now the Spirit rushes upon the church to advance the new creation,

  123. bringing restoration and beauty and new life.

  124. So, brothers and sisters,

  125. do we appreciate the power of the Holy Spirit?

  126. Or do we just give Him lip service?

  127. Perhaps we need a bigger view of who He is and what He's come to do.

  128. Yes, we acknowledge the Holy Spirit, but do we depend on Him?

  129. Or do we depend on our own strength,

  130. and our own intellect, on our own plans?

  131. Instead, friends, we should acknowledge,

  132. and we should confess that whatever strength we have,

  133. whatever intellect we have, is a gift from Him.

  134. And we should use it in prayerful dependence on Him,

  135. not despising those gifts or rejecting those gifts,

  136. but using them for His glory

  137. and depending on Him for their right use and wise execution.

  138. In prayerful dependence on the Spirit.

  139. You see, I wonder if you think

  140. that the trials you're up against are too big for you,

  141. and you've tried your own intellect

  142. and your own strength to get after them,

  143. but you've found them too big for the task.

  144. Surely the disciples thought about being witnesses

  145. to the ends of the earth and thought,

  146. we are too small for such a big task.

  147. And Christian, when you think about the trials before you,

  148. the truth is,

  149. they are too big for you,

  150. but they are not too big for the Holy Spirit who is in you.

  151. When God's Spirit filled the tabernacle in the Old Testament,

  152. do you remember that story?

  153. What happened?

  154. They build the tabernacle,

  155. God's Spirit comes down.

  156. Do you remember what happens?

  157. God's presence by His Holy Spirit

  158. was so weighty and so glorious

  159. and so powerful

  160. that the priests and the people

  161. who were gathered that day

  162. fell to the ground

  163. and they were unable to stand.

  164. God's holiness was so palpable

  165. and real

  166. and weighty.

  167. And friends,

  168. the same Spirit,

  169. if you are in Christ,

  170. now lives in you,

  171. in us,

  172. the church.

  173. It's not for nothing

  174. that the New Testament calls believers,

  175. calls the church,

  176. the temple of the Holy Spirit.

  177. Greater is He that is in you

  178. than he who is in the world.

  179. But, you know,

  180. I think it's worth considering as well

  181. that the Holy Spirit works

  182. not just in these outwardly dramatic ways

  183. like He did on the day of Pentecost.

  184. As the story of Acts will progress,

  185. we will see the work of the Holy Spirit

  186. happening in inward and quiet ways too

  187. as He opens people's hearts to believe.

  188. Sometimes the wind is a storm.

  189. Sometimes the wind is a gentle breeze.

  190. Sometimes the fire is blazing

  191. and you can't miss it

  192. because it's resting on your head.

  193. Sometimes the fire is warm

  194. and comforting through cold nights.

  195. Friends, so too,

  196. the work of the Holy Spirit.

  197. Sometimes, by virtue of the Holy Spirit,

  198. our tri-personal God

  199. batters our hearts,

  200. as John Donne once wrote.

  201. But sometimes the Holy Spirit

  202. works gently and softly over time.

  203. But consider

  204. whether the Holy Spirit

  205. decides in His sovereignty

  206. to work in you in outwardly dramatic ways

  207. or whether He decides

  208. to work in quiet inward ways.

  209. Remember,

  210. it's the same powerful God at work,

  211. the same fire,

  212. the same miracle of His personal presence

  213. in your life.

  214. One way isn't better than the other.

  215. The Holy Spirit knows just what we need

  216. and when and how.

  217. So this is what we see first,

  218. the power of the Holy Spirit.

  219. Next, we see the work of the Holy Spirit,

  220. the Holy Spirit's work.

  221. We see this in verses 5 through 13.

  222. After the Holy Spirit descends in power,

  223. the disciples,

  224. filled with the Holy Spirit,

  225. begin doing what?

  226. They begin proclaiming the mighty works of God

  227. in other tongues

  228. as the Spirit gave them utterance,

  229. Luke says.

  230. Presumably,

  231. as they're gathered in the upper room

  232. and the Spirit falls,

  233. they begin praising God

  234. and the praise starts to overflow

  235. such that they go out into the streets

  236. and probably into the temple courts

  237. and crowds start to hear the sound

  238. of this praise

  239. in all of these languages,

  240. in these other tongues,

  241. and they begin to gather.

  242. Now, what does Luke mean?

  243. What was happening?

  244. What does he mean by these other tongues?

  245. Well, verse 11 explains it.

  246. You can see there.

  247. After listing all the regions

  248. from whence the Jews had gathered

  249. to celebrate the Feast of Pentecost

  250. in Jerusalem,

  251. countries and regions

  252. from nearly every part

  253. of the known world, right,

  254. Luke reports the crowds as saying,

  255. we hear them telling

  256. in our own tongues

  257. the mighty works of God,

  258. in our native tongue.

  259. On that day,

  260. the Holy Spirit miraculously

  261. enabled the church

  262. to speak languages

  263. they did not know

  264. so that everyone could hear

  265. about the mighty works of God,

  266. that is, the powerful deeds

  267. that God had done

  268. in and through Jesus.

  269. Now, let's consider this scene

  270. a bit more.

  271. What language do you know?

  272. Do you know what language

  273. almost everyone spoke

  274. in the first century?

  275. No matter where you came from,

  276. you could probably speak Greek.

  277. You know, it's funny,

  278. we say today,

  279. we say, it's all Greek to me.

  280. It's funny, in the first century,

  281. that would have been like,

  282. oh, we understand it perfectly

  283. because we all speak

  284. this sort of common form of Greek.

  285. Now, why did everyone speak

  286. Greek in the first century?

  287. Well, because Alexander the Great,

  288. because of Alexander the Great's

  289. military conquests

  290. that happened hundreds

  291. of years earlier.

  292. As Alexander's empire expanded

  293. through the sword,

  294. Greek became the language

  295. that everyone needed to use

  296. to get by.

  297. It became the language of commerce.

  298. It became the language

  299. that connected the empire.

  300. And long after Alexander's empire collapsed,

  301. Greek remained

  302. as the sort of common language

  303. of the people.

  304. Now, of course,

  305. there was a benefit

  306. of having this common Greek language,

  307. Koine Greek,

  308. as it's called.

  309. It allowed people

  310. from different cultures

  311. to do interactions

  312. and to do transactions

  313. well enough.

  314. But,

  315. in addition to knowing Greek,

  316. everyone there on that day,

  317. from different parts

  318. of the known world,

  319. everyone also had,

  320. what the crowds call,

  321. in verse 11,

  322. their own tongue.

  323. I think of our church,

  324. many of you here,

  325. I'm guessing all of us here,

  326. speak English, right?

  327. But for a lot of you,

  328. it's not your native tongue.

  329. It's not the language

  330. of your home,

  331. your people.

  332. It's not the language

  333. of your heart.

  334. Here's the point.

  335. When the ascended Jesus

  336. sends His Holy Spirit

  337. upon His church

  338. and empowers them

  339. to advance His reign,

  340. does it spread

  341. like the empire of Alexander

  342. or the empire of the Caesars

  343. who were enforcing Latin

  344. on their subjects?

  345. Does it spread

  346. with the coercion

  347. of another tongue?

  348. No.

  349. God comes in their midst

  350. and does what?

  351. He speaks their language.

  352. The Spirit's first witness

  353. in the church

  354. is miraculously

  355. in the native tongue,

  356. the heart language

  357. of everyone gathered,

  358. no matter where they're from.

  359. You see, friends,

  360. this is the central work

  361. of the Holy Spirit,

  362. to witness to Jesus Christ

  363. in all the earth,

  364. to take the things

  365. that Jesus has done

  366. and declare them

  367. so that all can hear.

  368. This is what Jesus Himself

  369. taught His disciples

  370. before His death

  371. and resurrection.

  372. Jesus was teaching them

  373. about the Holy Spirit,

  374. and in John 15, 26,

  375. He says,

  376. When the Helper comes,

  377. whom I'll send you

  378. from the Father,

  379. the Spirit of truth

  380. who proceeds from the Father,

  381. He will bear witness about me.

  382. He will glorify me.

  383. And the miracle of tongues

  384. on the day of Pentecost

  385. was a sign,

  386. was a sign

  387. that this message

  388. was for everyone.

  389. Now, of course,

  390. it was only Jews

  391. who heard that first witness

  392. on the day of Pentecost,

  393. but as any reader of Acts

  394. can see,

  395. the day of Pentecost

  396. also points forward

  397. to the day

  398. when the Gentiles, too,

  399. would hear the Spirit's testimony

  400. to Jesus

  401. in their own tongue

  402. and belief.

  403. And that's why,

  404. by the way,

  405. when Cornelius,

  406. if we fast forward ahead

  407. in the book of Acts,

  408. that's why when Cornelius,

  409. the first Gentile believer,

  410. hears the gospel

  411. from Peter and believes,

  412. there's this seeming

  413. like mini-Pentecost.

  414. In Acts 10,

  415. the Spirit falls on them

  416. and they speak in tongues, too.

  417. Why?

  418. Because God's demonstrating

  419. in that special moment

  420. that the Gentiles, too,

  421. are now included

  422. in the one family of God

  423. around Jesus the King.

  424. Now, there wouldn't be

  425. two churches,

  426. one for the Jews

  427. and one for the Gentiles.

  428. Just as there's one Lord,

  429. the Lord Jesus,

  430. and just as there's

  431. one Holy Spirit,

  432. so there is one church

  433. to the glory of God,

  434. the Father.

  435. One church,

  436. one people,

  437. but many tongues,

  438. many languages,

  439. many cultures.

  440. And you see,

  441. this is what,

  442. this is what

  443. no earthly ruler

  444. and no earthly empire

  445. could ever achieve,

  446. a united people,

  447. united in all their diversity,

  448. not forced into uniformity,

  449. but liberated

  450. into a symphony of praise.

  451. Do you remember the event

  452. in Genesis that happened

  453. right before God's redemption plan

  454. really got rolling with Abraham?

  455. What was it that happens

  456. right before the episode

  457. with Abraham?

  458. Do you remember?

  459. Sword drill time.

  460. It's the Tower of Babel,

  461. right?

  462. What happens in the Tower of Babel?

  463. Humans, in their pride,

  464. gather together and say,

  465. let's build a tower to heaven

  466. and make a name for ourselves.

  467. So,

  468. they build up,

  469. they gather all their resources,

  470. they build a tower,

  471. they think themselves

  472. pretty great,

  473. God sort of looks down

  474. at their tower and says,

  475. oh, that's nice.

  476. Look at what you've done.

  477. And he says,

  478. don't you see,

  479. this isn't my plan for you.

  480. My plan for you

  481. was to go forth

  482. and to multiply

  483. and be fruitful

  484. and cultivate the earth

  485. to my praise,

  486. but here you are

  487. building your little towers,

  488. consolidating power,

  489. that's not how

  490. this is going to work.

  491. So,

  492. he confuses their tongues

  493. and scatters them

  494. in all directions.

  495. And the curse of Babel

  496. that sits over humankind

  497. is that in our alienation

  498. from God,

  499. we're alienated

  500. from one another.

  501. Literally,

  502. we can't even speak

  503. one another's language.

  504. But when the Holy Spirit

  505. comes

  506. and testifies

  507. in all of those languages

  508. to the resurrected Christ,

  509. what happens?

  510. the curse of Babel

  511. begins to be undone

  512. and humans are united again,

  513. having been reconciled to God.

  514. Of course,

  515. not everyone there

  516. on the day of Pentecost

  517. heard it as a symphony

  518. of praise.

  519. There were some

  520. who mocked them

  521. and said,

  522. they're full of new wine.

  523. Friends,

  524. it's going to be the same

  525. for the church

  526. of every age.

  527. Our spirit-filled witness

  528. will face ridicule

  529. at times,

  530. so don't be surprised

  531. when it comes.

  532. But, you know,

  533. consider at the same time,

  534. at the same time,

  535. consider that when

  536. the Spirit fell upon

  537. the church

  538. on that day of Pentecost

  539. and they began

  540. praising God

  541. for His mighty works,

  542. their joy was so overflowing,

  543. their speech was so

  544. rambunctious with praise,

  545. their voices so loud

  546. with good news

  547. that they could actually,

  548. they actually could be accused

  549. of being drunk

  550. with new wine.

  551. How about you and me?

  552. When the witness

  553. of the Spirit

  554. comes home to your heart,

  555. when the good news

  556. of Jesus' death

  557. and resurrection

  558. comes home,

  559. oh,

  560. then Christians

  561. have every reason

  562. to be ecstatic.

  563. Death is defeated,

  564. friends.

  565. sins are forgiven,

  566. eternal life is granted.

  567. The God of the universe

  568. looks upon you in Christ

  569. and He calls you

  570. beloved.

  571. We have every reason

  572. to be overjoyed,

  573. so don't bottle up

  574. your joy, Christian.

  575. Let the world think

  576. we're crazy.

  577. Our King is alive

  578. and there's nothing

  579. that can separate us

  580. from the love of God

  581. in Christ Jesus our Lord.

  582. So, friends,

  583. we've seen the Spirit's power,

  584. we've seen His work.

  585. Lastly,

  586. let's take a look

  587. at the Spirit's goal.

  588. In verses 14 through 21,

  589. Peter stands up

  590. and explains,

  591. I think equally

  592. with some jest

  593. in his voice,

  594. says,

  595. friends,

  596. it's only 9 a.m.

  597. Obviously,

  598. we're not drinking,

  599. right?

  600. Instead,

  601. Peter,

  602. to explain what's happening,

  603. turns to a passage

  604. of Scripture

  605. to explain

  606. what's taking place.

  607. And that passage

  608. is Joel chapter 2.

    Joel 2 chapter mention

  609. And as Zerion read

  610. for us earlier

  611. in the service,

  612. Joel chapter 2

    Joel 2 chapter mention

  613. foresaw a day

  614. when God's Spirit

  615. wouldn't just fall

  616. on a chosen few

  617. amidst God's people,

  618. a priest here,

  619. a king there,

  620. a prophet there,

  621. but rather the Spirit

  622. would fall

  623. on all God's people,

  624. male, female,

  625. young, and old,

  626. rich, and poor.

  627. They would all prophesy.

  628. That is,

  629. they would all speak

  630. forth the praises

  631. of God.

  632. And when the Spirit

  633. came like that,

  634. that would be the start

  635. of what Peter calls,

  636. what Joel calls,

  637. the last days.

  638. In other words,

  639. the final great act

  640. of God's plan

  641. of redemption,

  642. the last chapter

  643. in God's saving plan

  644. was unfolding

  645. and unfurling

  646. right before their eyes.

  647. Peter tells the crowd

  648. that day,

  649. this is it.

  650. The Spirit has come

  651. as promised,

  652. and the final chapter

  653. has begun.

  654. The Spirit is bringing

  655. to fulfillment

  656. God's saving work

  657. what the Father

  658. planned from eternity

  659. and what the Son

  660. accomplished

  661. through His finished work

  662. is now being applied

  663. by the ministry

  664. of the Spirit.

  665. And the conclusion

  666. of this last great chapter

  667. of God's saving plan

  668. will be what verse 20 calls

  669. the day of the Lord.

  670. That is the day

  671. when Jesus,

  672. as He promised,

  673. returns to judge

  674. and to save.

  675. But as the Spirit

  676. does His work

  677. in these last days,

  678. looking forward

  679. to that day of the Lord,

  680. as He does His work

  681. of testifying to Christ

  682. during these last days,

  683. what is His goal?

  684. Well, look at how

  685. the passage of Joel

  686. comes to an end.

  687. And it shall come to pass

  688. that everyone who calls

  689. upon the name of the Lord

  690. shall be saved.

  691. The Spirit's goal

  692. is nothing less

  693. forgiveness of sins.

  694. And our salvation,

  695. that is,

  696. our total rescue

  697. from sin

  698. and all sin's effects.

  699. And what is the hallmark?

  700. What's the centerpiece

  701. of this rescue?

  702. What's the linchpin,

  703. the heart of it all?

  704. Later in Peter's sermon

  705. in verse 38,

  706. he says that the heart

  707. of this salvation

  708. is the forgiveness

  709. of sins.

  710. The forgiveness

  711. of sins.

  712. To be pardoned

  713. for all of your offenses

  714. against God.

  715. To have God

  716. wipe your record clean.

  717. To be reconciled

  718. to God your Creator.

  719. To know that God,

  720. under whose just judgment

  721. you once stood

  722. because of your waywardness

  723. and rebellion.

  724. To know that that God

  725. will now never bring you

  726. into condemnation.

  727. And instead,

  728. He will embrace you

  729. not merely as His creature,

  730. but embrace you

  731. as His daughter

  732. and as His son.

  733. Friends,

  734. this is what the work

  735. of Christ has achieved.

  736. You know,

  737. too often we spend

  738. so much of our time

  739. and energy

  740. and deliberations

  741. thinking about how

  742. we can fix this problem

  743. and this problem

  744. and this problem

  745. and this problem.

  746. Not realizing

  747. that all of those problems

  748. stem forth

  749. from the heart

  750. of the issue.

  751. That we're alienated

  752. from God,

  753. the source of life.

  754. Why do we see death

  755. all around us?

  756. Because as humans

  757. we're like a flower

  758. that's been cut

  759. from its stem

  760. and the petals

  761. are wilting.

  762. So what do we do?

  763. We try to like

  764. spray the petals

  765. with all of this stuff

  766. to try to get it alive.

  767. But it doesn't work.

  768. Why?

  769. Because we're ruptured

  770. from the source of life,

  771. God Himself.

  772. And what Jesus

  773. has come to do

  774. is reconcile us to God

  775. to get to the source,

  776. to get to the heart

  777. of all of our death

  778. and decay,

  779. to fix it

  780. from the inside out.

  781. You see,

  782. this is what the work

  783. of Christ has achieved.

  784. He died in your place

  785. for your sin.

  786. He rose on the third day

  787. to newness of life

  788. so that everyone

  789. who repents

  790. and believes in Him

  791. can be forgiven

  792. of their sins,

  793. reconciled to God,

  794. and granted a life

  795. that never ends,

  796. eternal life,

  797. a life that will last forever

  798. and that begins now.

  799. The Spirit

  800. bears witness to Christ

  801. so that you might hear

  802. and so that by His work

  803. in your heart

  804. you might repent,

  805. believe,

  806. and be saved.

  807. And the Spirit

  808. is proclaiming

  809. that same message

  810. here this morning.

  811. And every time

  812. the Scriptures are opened

  813. and the gospel of Christ

  814. is proclaimed,

  815. the Spirit goes forth

  816. and says,

  817. call on the name

  818. of the Lord Jesus

  819. and be saved.

  820. Will you respond

  821. to that work

  822. of the Spirit

  823. this morning?

  824. And friends,

  825. the Spirit's work

  826. of witness

  827. isn't just something

  828. that goes forth

  829. to unbelievers

  830. calling them

  831. to believe

  832. and be saved.

  833. That ongoing witness

  834. of the Spirit

  835. happens in believers too.

  836. What does Paul say

  837. in Romans?

  838. The Spirit

  839. bears witness

  840. with our Spirit

  841. that we are indeed

  842. what?

  843. Sons and daughters

  844. of God.

  845. The Spirit

  846. will continue

  847. to speak that word

  848. in your heart

  849. so that you will

  850. continue to live

  851. more and more

  852. and be more

  853. and more

  854. who you are

  855. in Christ.

  856. Because you see,

  857. salvation

  858. in the Bible

  859. isn't just

  860. a future reality.

  861. Yes,

  862. it is future.

  863. it has a glorious

  864. hope and completion

  865. to come,

  866. but it's underway now.

  867. For all who believe

  868. in Christ

  869. by the Spirit's power,

  870. your sins are forgiven

  871. now.

  872. Your relationship

  873. with God

  874. is restored now.

  875. You're united

  876. to God's people now.

  877. You're part

  878. of His kingdom now.

  879. And that means

  880. life

  881. in these last days

  882. cannot be the same

  883. as it was before.

  884. for those

  885. who know Christ

  886. and are filled

  887. with His Spirit.

  888. Our life here,

  889. the way we organize

  890. our life

  891. and live our life

  892. and arrange our life

  893. and center our life,

  894. it cannot be the same

  895. because heaven

  896. has come down

  897. to earth

  898. and begun the work

  899. of making

  900. all things new.

  901. And

  902. for the dramatic

  903. social change

  904. that would take place

  905. when God arrived

  906. in His kingdom.

  907. as if to say

  908. that when God

  909. does His mighty work,

  910. the world

  911. will never be the same.

  912. It will be like

  913. the world

  914. is in labor pains,

  915. but through it all,

  916. a new creation

  917. is coming to birth.

  918. And let's boil that

  919. down to you and me.

  920. Friends,

  921. if you take Jesus Christ

  922. as your Lord,

  923. it will mean a revolution

  924. in how you live your life.

  925. you will no longer

  926. be in charge.

  927. He will.

  928. To surrender

  929. to His loving kingship

  930. may mean

  931. dramatic changes

  932. to your lifestyle,

  933. to your goals,

  934. to your life plan.

  935. It may feel sometimes

  936. like your world

  937. is falling apart

  938. because of its

  939. radical newness,

  940. because of the way

  941. in which all the old

  942. things you used to depend

  943. on and live for

  944. are no longer

  945. now the center

  946. of your life.

  947. But that disorientation

  948. and reorientation,

  949. that's not the end

  950. of the story

  951. because repentance,

  952. that is,

  953. surrendering your life

  954. to Jesus,

  955. centering your life

  956. on Him and His love,

  957. yes,

  958. it will at times

  959. feel destabilizing

  960. and risky

  961. and deorienting.

  962. The old world

  963. you're used to

  964. is falling away,

  965. but the new creation

  966. that God is ushering

  967. you into

  968. is far and away

  969. worth it.

  970. the Spirit is in the business

  971. of saving you,

  972. not just forgiving

  973. your sins,

  974. but remaking

  975. your whole life,

  976. sanctifying you,

  977. making you holy

  978. and beautiful

  979. just as God Himself

  980. is holy

  981. and beautiful.

  982. Just like the Spirit

  983. came down

  984. on the waters

  985. of the unformed

  986. first creation

  987. and brought form

  988. and beauty,

  989. that's what the Spirit

  990. is up to now.

  991. He wants to take

  992. your native tongue

  993. and make it sing

  994. His praise

  995. because, friends,

  996. that's what your native tongue

  997. is meant for.

  998. For too long,

  999. the languages

  1000. of our hearts

  1001. have sung the praise

  1002. of this fallen world

  1003. with its false gods,

  1004. and what we've gotten

  1005. in return

  1006. is spiritual death.

  1007. But the Spirit

  1008. has come

  1009. to liberate you

1010. to sing a new song,

  1011. the song

  1012. that only you

  1013. can sing,

  1014. the unique song

  1015. of your life

  1016. in the praise

  1017. of your Creator

  1018. and Redeemer,

  1019. in the praise

  1020. of the Triune God,

  1021. Father, Son,

  1022. and Spirit.

  1023. That's the Spirit's goal.

  1024. And, friends,

  1025. that's how

  1026. a small group

  1027. of once frightened,

  1028. once puzzled,

  1029. and once

  1030. in the world's eyes,

  1031. simple men and women

  1032. so quickly became

  1033. a force

  1034. to be reckoned with.

  1035. And that's how

  1036. you and I

  1037. will continue

  1038. to turn the world

  1039. upside down,

  1040. not by ourselves,

  1041. but by God,

  1042. the Holy Spirit.

  1043. Let's pray.

  1044. Amen.

  1045. come, Holy Spirit.

  1046. Come and do

  1047. your work.

  1048. Come liberate us

  1049. from sin and idols.

  1050. Come grant us faith

  1051. in Jesus,

  1052. our Lord and Savior.

  1053. Come do your work

  1054. of purifying work.

  1055. Come do your work

  1056. of gifting your church

  1057. for ministry.

  1058. Come do your work

  1059. of magnifying

  1060. the name of Jesus

  1061. in our midst.

  1062. And, Spirit,

  1063. allow us,

  1064. help us,

  1065. empower us

  1066. to keep in step

  1067. with you.

  1068. To the glory

  1069. of the Father,

1070. in the name of Jesus Christ,

  1071. we pray.

  1072. Amen.

  1073. Amen.

  1074. Thank you.
