  1. I think I need to pray before we jump into the word. Is that okay? Let's do that.

  2. God, we thank you. We thank you that we get together.

  3. ! We thank you that we are able to have so many different spaces together.

  4. But there really is only one purpose to our gathering, and that is to glorify and worship you.

  5. And so now we open up your word. We ask that you would speak.

  6. May the words that we hear today come straight from your heart and cut straight into ours.

  7. Let's speak. We are listening. In your name we pray. Amen.

  8. Can I invite you to stand for the word of the Lord?

  9. Amen.

  10. These are the generations of Isaac, Abraham's son. We are in Genesis 25, verse 19.

    Genesis 25:19

  11. Abraham fathered Isaac, and Isaac was 40 years old when he took Rebekah, the daughter of Bethuel, the Aramean of Paddan Aram,

  12. the sister of Laban, the Aramean, to be his wife.

  13. And Isaac prayed to the Lord for his wife, because she was barren.

  14. And the Lord granted his prayer, and Rebekah, his wife, conceived.

  15. The children struggled together within her, and she said,

  16. If it is thus, why is this happening to me?

  17. She went to inquire of the Lord.

  18. And the Lord said to her,

  19. Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples from within you shall be divided.

  20. The one shall be stronger than the other. The older shall serve the younger.

  21. When her days to give birth were completed, behold, there were twins in her womb.

  22. The first came out red, all his body like a hairy cloak, so they called his name Esau.

  23. Afterward, his brother came out with his hand holding Esau's heel, so his name was called Jacob.

  24. Isaac was 60 years old when she bore them.

  25. When the boys grew up, Esau was a skillful hunter, a man of the field,

  26. while Jacob was a quiet man, dwelling in tents.

  27. Isaac loved Esau because he ate of his game, but Rebekah loved Jacob.

  28. Once when Jacob was cooking stew, Esau came in from the field, and he was exhausted.

  29. And Esau said to Jacob,

  30. Let me eat some of that red stew, for I am exhausted.

  31. Therefore, his name was called Edom.

  32. Jacob said, Sell me your birthright now.

  33. Esau said, I am about to die. Of what use is a birthright to me?

  34. Jacob said, Swear to me now.

  35. So he swore to him and sold his birthright to Jacob.

  36. Then Jacob gave Esau bread and lentil stew,

  37. and he ate and drank and rose and went his way.

  38. Thus Esau despised his birthright.

  39. This is the word of the Lord.

  40. Please take a seat.

  41. So we continue into the journey of Genesis,

  42. and Gabe last week spoke to us,

  43. and he really kind of spoke this one phrase over us

  44. that I think just perfectly sums up what the faith really is about,

  45. and that is God is sovereignly for you.

  46. God is sovereign.

  47. He's in control.

  48. But it's even more than that.

  49. He's not just sovereign and in control of everything.

  50. He's not just got the whole world in his hands.

  51. He is for you.

  52. He cares for you.

  53. And we were just presented with this truth,

  54. and we wondered whether we can even just sit in that truth and go,

  55. Wow, God is in control of my life.

  56. And not only that, he is for me.

  57. For God works for the good of those who love him.

  58. What the enemy sometimes means for evil always,

  59. God turns for good.

  60. So he controls, he orchestrates everything so that I am loved and good

  61. and living in this favor,

  62. and that his promises will be carried out through me and my family

  63. and will continue.

  64. Isn't that just a beautiful truth?

  65. But here's the problem with that truth.

  66. That's theology, and it's correct, and it's true, and it transforms lives.

  67. But the reality often is it's really hard to live out.

  68. You hear that kind of promise spoken over you one day,

  69. and you're lifted, and you're inspired, and you're encouraged,

  70. and you're comforted, and then you go home,

  71. and then you go to work,

  72. and suddenly you're just crushed with the reality.

  73. And so even though that promise still remains somewhere in our psyche,

  74. the moment we walk back into our broken workplaces,

  75. the moment we walk back into our broken families,

  76. suddenly we're like,

  77. Well, God, how are your promises even going to come about?

  78. Because my family, my life, my work is pretty messed up.

  79. And so you have this tension between theology and reality

  80. that actually is something that I want to talk about.

  81. And here's my line for today,

  82. which is God's perfect plan will be carried out,

  83. but it will be carried out through imperfect people.

  84. It will be carried out through imperfect families that are broken.

  85. We all sit and go,

  86. Wow, we have problems in all of our lives.

  87. We all have different challenges and problems,

  88. and you often wonder,

  89. How is God going to fulfill those promises?

  90. You see, even though there is this incredible scene

  91. where Isaac's waiting for a wife,

  92. and just magically at a well, prepared for him,

  93. this beautiful lady that he's been waiting for all these years.

  94. Boom.

  95. God's timing.

  96. It's perfect.

  97. He knows way more than we do.

  98. Sadly, Genesis doesn't just finish there,

  99. and then says,

  100. Isaac, Rebecca lived happily ever after,

  101. and God's promises were forever fulfilled in their lives.

  102. What you see, the next chapter,

  103. is a broken family.

  104. If God's promises are going to actually pass on,

  105. you wonder,

  106. Oh, how is he going to pass that on?

  107. And what you wouldn't have guessed

  108. is that he passes that promise on

  109. through a family of four,

  110. filled with dysfunction,

  111. two brats of sons,

  112. who actually don't even really prioritize God at all.

  113. And then you've got a father and a mother who,

  114. actually, they each choose their own favorite,

  115. and then it leads to dysfunction in the family.

  116. And you're like, wow,

  117. God's perfect plan gets carried out

  118. through imperfect people.

  119. And we're going to unpack a little bit of that today

  120. because chapter 25,

  121. suddenly you see this plan,

  122. this promise played out,

  123. and it's filled with grief,

  124. it's filled with deceit,

  125. and it's filled with sin,

  126. and it's filled with pride.

  127. And that's all pretty jarring,

  128. but I'm hoping as we get to the end of this,

  129. we will realize that actually that's encouraging as well.

  130. There's a group of guys,

  131. we've been reading 2 Peter,

  132. and 2 Peter chapter 1, I think,

    2 Peter 1 chapter mention

  133. says this about,

  134. actually, what we believe

  135. aren't just cleverly devised,

  136. they're not just myths,

  137. they're not just things,

  138. they're not just fairy tales

  139. that we've tried to believe

  140. to help us feel better about our lives.

  141. These are real stories about real people.

  142. Why?

  143. Because it's just so messed up.

  144. It's just so messed up.

  145. If you were going to make something up,

  146. you wouldn't make it up like this.

  147. And yet, here you see a family

  148. that is completely broken,

  149. that is used by God.

  150. So, unfortunately,

  151. this is going to be the last time

  152. we hear of Abraham

  153. because we are seeing here,

  154. chapter 25,

  155. you can just follow along with me.

  156. So, after Sarah dies,

  157. Abraham actually takes another wife,

  158. and actually,

  159. she bears lots of children for him.

  160. Verse 5,

  161. Abraham still, though,

  162. gives all that he has to Isaac

  163. because he knows the covenant

  164. is going to go through this one boy.

  165. He's going to go through Isaac.

  166. All these other concubines

  167. and their children,

  168. he actually still gives gifts,

  169. but then he actually sends them away.

  170. So, he's still focusing.

  171. God's going to fulfill his promise

  172. through the covenant

  173. that is going to go through

  174. this one boy, Isaac.

  175. So, verse 6,

  176. But to the sons of his concubines,

  177. Abraham gave gifts,

  178. and while he was still living,

  179. he sent them away

  180. from his son Isaac

  181. eastward to the east country.

  182. These are the days of the years

  183. of Abraham's life,

  184. 175,

  185. and then Abraham breathed his last

  186. and died in a good old age,

  187. an old man,

  188. and full of years,

  189. and was gathered to his people.

  190. I was just stuck there

  191. for a little bit

  192. as I was preparing this week

  193. and go, wow,

  194. Abraham,

  195. the founder of the faith,

  196. he dies.

  197. And this week,

  198. for whatever reason,

  199. I've been surrounded

  200. by death myself.

  201. I went to a funeral yesterday.

  202. Joe and I have a beloved aunt

  203. who's getting very,

  204. very close to the end,

  205. and she was a superhero

  206. to us growing up,

  207. and we saw her this last week,

  208. and we were like,

  209. oh, this is the end.

  210. And it makes you think,

  211. especially if you're young,

  212. maybe you don't think about death.

  213. I can tell you I think about death

  214. all the time,

  215. because it will happen

  216. to every single person

  217. in this room.

  218. So even though there are promises

  219. that God gives us,

  220. isn't that reality

  221. just sobering?

  222. That all of us,

  223. at some point,

  224. will die.

  225. Genesis 5 has this list

  226. of people who will die,

  227. almost just to repeat

  228. that there are consequences

  229. to our actions,

  230. and death was the thing

  231. that was introduced

  232. into creation.

  233. And now you see Abraham,

  234. Abraham,

  235. still dies.

  236. It makes you think

  237. about what this life

  238. really is about,

  239. but then even though

  240. you see Abraham dies,

  241. the God of Abraham

  242. continues to live on.

  243. It's not just about

  244. Abraham either.

  245. In fact,

  246. the Bible kind of gives him

  247. his credit and says

  248. he dies at a good old age,

  249. and then he gets buried,

  250. and actually at that moment,

  251. Isaac and Ishmael

  252. get back together

  253. to bury their dad.

  254. They bury dad

  255. in the same place

  256. where mom is,

  257. and verse 11,

  258. it just almost casually

  259. says,

  260. after the death of Abraham,

  261. God blessed Isaac,

  262. his son.

  263. So the legacy continues,

  264. and it goes into

  265. this next passage

  266. about Isaac.

  267. Isaac's a really

  268. interesting character.

  269. Dad Abraham,

  270. son Jacob,

  271. both guys get a lot

  272. of time,

  273. get a lot of time

  274. in this book.

  275. Isaac himself

  276. doesn't really get

  277. that much time.

  278. We don't know that much

  279. about Isaac,

  280. but we get a little bit here.

  281. But before I talk about Isaac,

  282. verse 12 to 18

  283. tells you a little bit

  284. about Ishmael.

  285. Ishmael was the son

  286. who came from Hagar,

  287. the Egyptian,

  288. remember that,

  289. and he was sent away.

  290. It's really interesting

  291. because actually

  292. he didn't treat Isaac

  293. very well,

  294. and he wasn't part

  295. of the covenant,

  296. he wasn't part

  297. of the promise,

  298. he wasn't going to be

  299. part of God's plan,

  300. so he gets sent away,

  301. but it's interesting

  302. because the writer here

  303. kind of gives you

  304. a little bit of an update

  305. about how Ishmael's doing.

  306. And Ishmael has these sons,

  307. and actually these sons,

  308. in verse 16,

  309. these are the sons of Ishmael,

  310. and these are their names

  311. by their villages

  312. and by their encampments,

  313. 12 princes.

  314. So Ishmael has 12 sons,

  315. but they're not just sons,

  316. they're princes.

  317. They're actually wealthy.

  318. And it's really interesting

  319. because even though

  320. he's not part of God's plan,

  321. even though he doesn't fear God,

  322. even though he doesn't love God

  323. or follow God,

  324. yet God is still good

  325. for his promise.

  326. Because remember what we said?

  327. That he will still

  328. look after Ishmael.

  329. He's not going to be part

  330. of the plan,

  331. but he's still going

  332. to look after him.

  333. Even though Ishmael

  334. was mistreating Isaac,

  335. yet God still was good

  336. for his promise.

  337. It makes me think,

  338. well, I don't know

  339. where you guys are

  340. in your faith,

  341. but for those of you

  342. who are like,

  343. I don't know if God loves me,

  344. I don't know if God,

  345. actually if God knows

  346. everything that I do,

  347. then actually I wouldn't

  348. be part of this promise.

  349. Isn't it interesting

  350. that even Ishmael

  351. still gets the blessing,

  352. still gets looked after,

  353. and if God is going

  354. to care for Ishmael,

  355. he's going to care for you.

  356. He's going to care for me still.

  357. But that's not going

  358. to be the main part

  359. of our story

  360. because after that,

  361. he gives an update

  362. on Ishmael.

  363. We then move into the part

  364. that I just read,

  365. which is here.

  366. These are the generations

  367. of Isaac, Abraham's son.

  368. So Isaac is 40 years old

  369. when he took Rebecca

  370. and they married.

  371. And that's where you think,

  372. oh, God blesses Isaac.

  373. God blesses Isaac.

  374. And of course,

  375. Isaac's like,

  376. look, I remember

  377. that there was this

  378. traumatic incident

  379. where dad walked me

  380. up the mountain

  381. and he tied me up.

  382. But actually,

  383. God then replaced me

  384. and so I got to continue living.

  385. So God's going to carry out

  386. his promises through me.

  387. So what's the next thing

  388. that you expect to happen?

  389. Isaac's living his life,

  390. growing up,

  391. finds a wonderful wife,

  392. gets married,

  393. and he's like,

  394. well, my baby's coming soon.

  395. Because that's got to be the way

  396. because that's what God promised.

  397. And what happens here?

  398. Because she was barren.

  399. Wow.

  400. Almost just again.

  401. Just like his dad

  402. and just like his mom.

  403. Rebecca is barren.

  404. And so what does he do

  405. as a 40-year-old man

  406. who's just married his wife,

  407. waiting for God's promises to come?

  408. He waits.

  409. He waits.

  410. And he waits.

  411. And how does he wait?

  412. He waits through prayer.

  413. You can see what he does here.

  414. Whereas dad did not do this.

  415. Dad waited

  416. and then decided to take matters

  417. into his own hands.

  418. Or rather,

  419. mom then offered

  420. a bit of a dodgy plan

  421. to do it.

  422. Whereas Isaac here

  423. actually prays.

  424. So his default

  425. when he's waiting

  426. is to pray.

  427. And I asked a few months ago

  428. how well do we wait?

  429. And so I'm not going to labor

  430. on that topic

  431. because what we see here is,

  432. again,

  433. God's chosen one,

  434. the one that God blesses,

  435. still has to wait.

  436. It makes me think

  437. as I struggle with waiting,

  438. and again,

  439. it's in the 2 Peter passage

  440. and in the book of James,

  441. where we've been reading

  442. about just patience.

  443. We think that when God blesses us,

  444. when we follow God,

  445. then everything will happen

  446. immediately, instantly.

  447. Yet that is never the case.

  448. Rarely ever the case.

  449. There is beauty in the waiting.

  450. God uses the waiting.

  451. God sees whether we're waiting well

  452. and through the waiting,

  453. and that's when he's really

  454. molding us,

  455. molding our desires.

  456. And so you see Isaac here waiting,

  457. and how long does he wait for?

  458. God's chosen one

  459. who God blessed

  460. waits for 20 years

  461. for a baby.

  462. The Bible almost

  463. says it casually.

  464. If we just take a peek

  465. later on,

  466. same chapter,

  467. verse 26,

  468. Isaac was 60 years old

  469. when she bore them.

  470. Just casually.

  471. They got married at 40,

  472. they had their first baby at 60.

  473. 20 years of waiting.

  474. So quick question here,

  475. what are we waiting for?

  476. How well are we waiting?

  477. And in our waiting,

  478. do we go to God?

  479. Do we pray?

  480. God doesn't answer

  481. always with yes,

  482. immediately,

  483. now.

  484. And we have to be prepared

  485. that sometimes God's answer

  486. is not what we want.

  487. That's when you go back

  488. to that truth.

  489. But God is sovereignly for me,

  490. sovereignly for me.

  491. So I wait

  492. with that kind of trust.

  493. So he waits,

  494. and it's waiting,

  495. and it's forcing him

  496. to surrender.

  497. And finally,

  498. as if this is just

  499. such a casual bit,

  500. verse 21,

  501. he's praying,

  502. and the Lord granted his prayer,

  503. and Rebecca,

  504. his wife,

  505. conceived.

  506. So God is sovereign,

  507. he's completely in control.

  508. But yet he still ordains

  509. the means,

  510. which is prayer.

  511. He ordains the means,

  512. which is prayer,

  513. and also the ends,

  514. which is the final conception.

  515. So you see,

  516. even though we are waiting

  517. and God is in control,

  518. he still hears,

  519. he still listens,

  520. and he still wants

  521. this communication,

  522. he still wants

  523. this relationship with us.

  524. And so,

  525. of course,

  526. it says it casually

  527. here in one sentence,

  528. we now know

  529. that that's 20 years

  530. of waiting and praying.

  531. And I hope that's

  532. of comfort to someone

  533. who has been waiting

  534. for a loved one

  535. to come to Christ,

  536. waiting for the job,

  537. waiting for the spouse,

  538. whatever it may be,

  539. wait well,

  540. and pray whilst you wait.

  541. And of course,

  542. they have the baby,

  543. they conceive,

  544. the children struggle together

  545. within her,

  546. and she said,

  547. if it is this,

  548. why is this happening to me?

  549. So,

  550. I've never bought twins before,

  551. personally,

  552. but she wouldn't have known that

  553. because there were no ultrasounds

  554. at that moment in time.

  555. So she finally gets pregnant,

  556. and she's getting pretty big,

  557. much quicker

  558. than she expected.

  559. And actually,

  560. I'm guessing she's in a lot of pain.

  561. Why?

  562. Because the twins are wrestling

  563. inside her.

  564. And so she's like,

  565. God,

  566. why is this happening to me?

  567. I'm guessing she's also thinking,

  568. maybe it's because I'm too old,

  569. maybe it's because I'm 60,

  570. maybe it's because I'm past the age,

  571. maybe this isn't going to go well.

  572. And so she's waiting

  573. and she's wrestling,

  574. and what does she do?

  575. She does the same thing

  576. that her husband does.

  577. She goes to the Lord.

  578. So she went to inquire of the Lord,

  579. and the Lord actually responds to her.

  580. Wouldn't that be just amazing

  581. when we go and inquire of the Lord,

  582. and we hear just clearly

  583. what the Lord says to her.

  584. And here we go.

  585. Two nations are in your womb,

  586. and two peoples from within you

  587. shall be divided.

  588. The one shall be stronger

  589. than the other.

  590. The older shall serve the younger.

  591. So her first point of contact

  592. is to pray as well.

  593. He's not getting what he thinks

  594. he wants or needs.

  595. He goes to pray.

  596. She gets it,

  597. but it's not quite what she's expecting,

  598. and it's confusing.

  599. It's scary.

  600. So what does she do?

  601. She goes to pray,

  602. and the Lord responds and says,

  603. what's actually happening

  604. is the curse from Genesis 3

  605. where we said that there will be

  606. two groups of people.

  607. One will trust in God,

  608. and one will follow,

  609. and one will not.

  610. Now they're happening in your womb,

  611. that these two people

  612. in your womb

  613. are going to represent two nations,

  614. and it's going to be a little bit different

  615. to what you think

  616. because the one shall be stronger

  617. than the other.

  618. The older shall serve the younger,

  619. which goes completely against

  620. the ancient tradition.

  621. Actually,

  622. this is not hard

  623. for us Chinese people

  624. to understand

  625. because the firstborn

  626. was the one

  627. who gets the double blessing,

  628. and the others

  629. just get whatever's left,

  630. and so this would have been

  631. the same here,

  632. but God's saying,

  633. hey,

  634. I'm going to change

  635. human tradition upside down.

  636. It's not going to be

  637. what you think.

  638. It never is what you think

  639. when it comes to the kingdom of God.

  640. You think one way,

  641. the world thinks one way,

  642. and that's just foolishness

  643. to the kingdom of God,

  644. and it's going to be

  645. this other way,

  646. and this time you see

  647. it's going to be

  648. the younger one

  649. that actually comes out

  650. with the blessing,

  651. but of course,

  652. how it all happens

  653. is very interesting.

  654. When her days to give birth

  655. were completed,

  656. behold,

  657. there were twins in her womb.

  658. The first came out red,

  659. all his body,

  660. like a hairy cloak,

  661. so they called him Esau,

  662. and then his brother came out

  663. with his hand

  664. holding Esau's heel,

  665. so his name was Jacob,

  666. and the boys grew up,

  667. and then they have

  668. two very different boys.

  669. One's a jock,

  670. and one's a nerd.

  671. One's a jock.

  672. He likes to go out

  673. and hunt.

  674. A man of the field,

  675. skillful hunter,

  676. and while Jacob

  677. liked to sit at home

  678. in quiet,

  679. in solitude,

  680. and read,

  681. and game,

  682. and one actually goes out

  683. to cause destruction,

  684. and the other just simply

  685. just stays at home,

  686. and here comes

  687. that special line

  688. that maybe some of us

  689. in our families

  690. have also experienced.

  691. Isaac loved Esau

  692. because he ate of his game,

  693. but Rebecca loves Jacob.

  694. Oh, the destructive outcomes

  695. that come with favoritism.

  696. When a parent favors

  697. one child over the other,

  698. and the emotional

  699. and mental

  700. and sometimes physical trauma

  701. that comes with that,

  702. God's perfect plan

  703. happens through

  704. an imperfect family

  705. that is dysfunctional,

  706. and what you see

  707. of Isaac and Rebecca

  708. are not quite

  709. these godly

  710. founding father,

  711. mother material.

  712. You see just a dad

  713. who starts to lose his way

  714. and who prefers the son

  715. who will actually

  716. bring him back

  717. that Wagyu steak

  718. just the way he likes it,

  719. and you see this other son

  720. who is favored by mom

  721. because he likes

  722. to stay at home with her

  723. to talk

  724. and to hang out

  725. and listen,

  726. and yet God's perfect plan

  727. continues through this.

  728. The interesting thing is

  729. Jacob,

  730. we always think

  731. is just this,

  732. again,

  733. this patriarch,

  734. this guy who is holy

  735. and perfect,

  736. but no,

  737. what we actually see

  738. if you look into his story

  739. is he's a scheming,

  740. manipulative man.

  741. Of course,

  742. Esau just seems dumb,

  743. but Jacob kind of knows

  744. exactly what he's doing.

  745. And then we head into

  746. a really interesting passage,

  747. which I think is where

  748. we'll probably just spend

  749. a little bit of time

  750. just to focus on,

  751. which is this little,

  752. little passage

  753. from verse 29 to 34.

  754. So, you know,

  755. these five verses here

  756. actually gets quoted

  757. later in scripture,

  758. which we're going to go

  759. on a little bit of a journey

  760. in a bit,

  761. so bear with us for now.

  762. So, Esau goes out to hunt.

  763. He hunts,

  764. and he hunts a lot,

  765. and he's very good at it,

  766. and he's exhausted from it.

  767. Meanwhile,

  768. Jacob has just finished

  769. the book that he's reading,

  770. and so he's like,

  771. I'm going to start

  772. cooking some food.

  773. And so he's cooking this stew,

  774. and then Esau comes in

  775. from the field,

  776. and he was exhausted,

  777. and Esau said to Jacob,

  778. let me eat some of that red stew,

  779. for I am exhausted.

  780. Therefore,

  781. his name was called Eden,

  782. which means red.

  783. Imagine this,

  784. you make one mistake

  785. in your life,

  786. one little mistake,

  787. because you were hungry that time,

  788. and then for the rest of your life,

  789. you are named and mocked

  790. because of that one mistake.

  791. So that's exactly

  792. what it says here.

  793. And Jacob said,

  794. he's probably planning this already,

  795. because this happens every day.

  796. Esau with all his muscle

  797. and all his masculinity,

  798. goes out and hunts this beef for us,

  799. and it's great,

  800. but he comes home,

  801. and he's exhausted,

  802. and he's grumpy,

  803. and he's hungry.

  804. Meanwhile,

  805. Jacob is at home

  806. reading novels,

  807. and he's seen this before

  808. in a book,

  809. and he realizes

  810. this is the moment

  811. where you get

  812. to the heart of a man

  813. through his stomach,

  814. and he wants the birthright.

  815. And remember,

  816. mom's probably whispering to him,

  817. hey,

  818. do you know when I was pregnant

  819. with the two of you,

  820. God actually spoke to me.

  821. He told me

  822. that you're actually

  823. going to be better

  824. than your brother.

  825. You're actually going to

  826. rule over your brother.

  827. So you see,

  828. Rebecca,

  829. this image that we had

  830. at the beginning

  831. where she was so kind

  832. and hospitable

  833. at the well

  834. in the last chapter,

  835. you see her turning

  836. a little bit,

  837. and no doubt,

  838. that would have been part of

  839. maybe why Jacob

  840. was the way he was.

  841. So anyway,

  842. Esau comes charging in,

  843. he throws his axe

  844. on the side,

  845. and then he comes in,

  846. he says,

  847. oh,

  848. that smells so good.

  849. And we find out later

  850. that it's actually lentil.

  851. Does anyone like lentil?

  852. Yeah,

  853. lentil.

  854. It's great,

  855. it's cool,

  856. I'm good for you.

  857. It's got to be lentil

  858. and avocado.

  859. Avocado was definitely

  860. on the side there.

  861. And then so Esau says,

  862. oh,

  863. I'm so hungry.

  864. Give me some of that stew.

  865. And then Jacob says,

  866. sure,

  867. you have to give me

  868. your birthright.

  869. Straight out of nowhere,

  870. you have to give me

  871. your birthright.

  872. And then Esau responds to him,

  873. I'm about to die.

  874. What use is a birthright to me?

  875. Can you see

  876. just the melodramatic nature

  877. of this older brother here?

  878. But before we talk more

  879. about this,

  880. don't we all have that?

  881. What we're talking about here

  882. is actually an idol.

  883. And what we're talking about here

  884. is actually when we put something

  885. that is supposed to be God,

  886. that isn't God,

  887. we all have this.

  888. When we don't have something

  889. that we really want,

  890. it almost messes up

  891. the way we approach life

  892. altogether.

  893. If I don't have that girl,

  894. my life is just

  895. not worth living.

  896. It's just,

  897. I'm just going to be living

  898. in black and white

  899. for the rest of my life.

  900. I won't see color

  901. until I'm in that relationship.

  902. Unless I get that job,

  903. my life is completely

  904. meaningless.

  905. There's no point in living.

  906. If I don't have that soup,

  907. I'm about to die.

  908. That is the lie of idolatry,

  909. where you think that you really

  910. need something,

  911. and it affects the way

  912. you look at everything.

  913. And I'm just going to pause there

  914. for a second,

  915. because I know for a fact

  916. that there are idols

  917. in this room.

  918. John Calvin says,

  919. the human heart

  920. is a factory of idols.

  921. We all have them.

  922. What is the thing

  923. that you have,

  924. well, sorry,

  925. that you want,

  926. and that if you don't have,

  927. your life is just not perfect?

  928. Well, I'm here to tell you

  929. that even if you have it,

  930. it won't be perfect.

  931. But actually,

  932. your very thirst for it,

  933. your very hunger for it,

  934. actually stops you

  935. from enjoying the goodness

  936. that God actually has for you.

  937. I had a little bit of this

  938. happened to me,

  939. and I have a few friends

  940. in this room

  941. who talked to me about tech.

  942. I like tech,

  943. and I like gadgets,

  944. and this week,

  945. there was the latest iPhone

  946. that was released.

  947. Of course,

  948. I have been waiting

  949. for many years

  950. for the new iPhone

  951. to come out.

  952. And so last Saturday,

  953. I think it was 8 p.m.,

  954. was the day

  955. that pre-orders began.

  956. Come on,

  957. any nerds,

  958. just nod with me,

  959. just tell me

  960. that I'm not alone in this.

  961. Okay, I am really alone.

  962. I'm the only one

  963. with this idol.

  964. All right, fine.

  965. 8 p.m.

  966. last Saturday,

  967. my kids were supposed

  968. to go to sleep,

  969. but I was like,

  970. Daddy's got something

  971. really important to do.

  972. If I don't make this pre-order now,

  973. I won't get the phone next week.

  974. And it's funny,

  975. I made the order,

  976. and praise the Lord,

  977. it happened,

  978. internet connection

  979. and everything.

  980. And you know what?

  981. Then I spent the last week

  982. waiting for it,

  983. and I was just looking

  984. at my old phone

  985. with more and more disdain.

  986. Just as it was going,

  987. I was like,

  988. you are so slow.

  989. You are so dumb.

  990. And now you're overheating.

  991. I don't,

  992. like,

  993. you are affecting,

  994. you are just killing my vibes,

  995. and I'm not living

  996. my full life with you.

  997. Don't we have that?

  998. Oh,

  999. but then the moment

  1000. the new phone came,

1001. it was fun for about 60 seconds,

  1002. and I was like,

  1003. I can't tell the difference

  1004. between the cameras anyway,

  1005. and I'm like,

  1006. okay,

  1007. here we are.

  1008. And that's exactly

1009. what happens with an idol.

1010. You're just yearning for it.

1011. If only I get it.

1012. If only I get it,

1013. my life will be complete,

  1014. and I'll be happy,

  1015. and I won't be dying.

  1016. But you get it?

  1017. And it's really casual

1018. in the way he says it.

  1019. Verse 34,

  1020. Jacob gave Esau bread

  1021. and lentil stew.

1022. He ate and drank and rose

  1023. and went his way.

  1024. And that was it.

  1025. He pre-ordered,

  1026. he ordered,

  1027. he traded in,

  1028. he collected,

  1029. he activated,

  1030. restored.

  1031. And that was it.

1032. I wonder how we are

  1033. with our idols.

1034. The things that we're chasing

  1035. and saying,

  1036. God,

  1037. please give me that.

1038. And I wonder whether actually

1039. we really in some ways

  1040. are the same.

  1041. And it's this idea

  1042. of just instant gratification

  1043. that we all want.

  1044. You see in scripture,

  1045. eating is a problem.

  1046. And it all started

1047. because there was a fruit

  1048. that looked good.

  1049. Reminds me of Philippians

  1050. where it says,

  1051. their end is destruction,

1052. their God is their belly.

1053. They glory in their shame

1054. with minds set on earthy things.

  1055. I wonder whether we

  1056. have those things

  1057. where our minds

1058. are set on earthy things,

  1059. where we actually glory

  1060. in our shame,

  1061. where actually our God

  1062. is our belly.

  1063. That's why a spiritual discipline

1064. like fasting is so good

  1065. because you're actually

  1066. telling God actually,

1067. all I need is you.

1068. All I want is you.

1069. This hunger that I feel,

1070. this hunger strike that I have,

1071. this hunger that I feel,

1072. I want to direct all of that

1073. hunger and thirst for you

  1074. because blessed are those

  1075. who hunger and thirst

  1076. for righteousness,

1077. for they shall be satisfied.

  1078. It's funny,

1079. the moment we get that job,

  1080. get that person,

  1081. get that phone,

  1082. get that thing,

  1083. it's good for a little bit

  1084. and then suddenly,

  1085. it's gone.

  1086. That satisfaction is gone

  1087. and that yearning

  1088. then goes somewhere else.

  1089. Not knowing that really

  1090. that yearning points us

  1091. to a place

  1092. which is called eternity.

  1093. Ecclesiastes 3.11 says

1094. that God has planted eternity

1095. in the heart of man

1096. and we just try and fill

  1097. that gap

  1098. that only eternity

  1099. can fill

  1100. with all the things

  1101. of this world.

  1102. C.S. Lewis says

1103. that we are half-hearted creatures.

  1104. We just fill ourselves

  1105. with money,

  1106. sex and power

  1107. and whatever the latest,

  1108. newest thing is

  1109. and actually,

  1110. what we deprive ourselves

  1111. is infinite joy.

  1112. He talks about it

  1113. in his book,

  1114. The Weight of Glory

  1115. where actually,

  1116. that stops us

  1117. from enjoying

  1118. what we're supposed

  1119. to enjoy

  1120. because we are so,

  1121. it's actually,

  1122. we're not yearning

  1123. for the right things.

  1124. That's what we're supposed

1125. to be going for here.

  1126. But then this comes

  1127. a really harsh quote

  1128. and this is where

  1129. we'll kind of land

1130. and spend some time on

  1131. before I finish.

  1132. Thus,

  1133. Esau despised

  1134. his birthright.

  1135. I was like,

  1136. whoa,

  1137. that's a strong word.

  1138. My man was hungry

  1139. and he was exhausted

  1140. because he was hunting

  1141. for his family

1142. because he has a nerd

  1143. of a brother

  1144. who doesn't go out

  1145. to feed the family.

  1146. So,

  1147. therefore,

1148. he's got to go out

  1149. and get the food

  1150. and he's exhausted

  1151. and he chooses

  1152. the soup

1153. and yet what we see here

  1154. is he despised

  1155. his birthright.

  1156. Worse still,

  1157. this little interaction here

  1158. ends up

  1159. being recorded

  1160. and retold

  1161. through many places

  1162. in scripture

  1163. and this is what

1164. we're going to do today.

  1165. So,

1166. if you have your Bible,

1167. you can go with me

  1168. to the final book

  1169. of the Old Testament

  1170. which is Malachi

  1171. because we're going

  1172. to look at that

  1173. because it didn't

  1174. make sense to me.

  1175. He was hungry.

  1176. Yes,

  1177. I get it.

  1178. His birthright

  1179. was something

  1180. that was very important

  1181. but in that moment,

1182. his God was his belly

1183. and he gave it up

1184. and then from then on

  1185. it was recorded

  1186. that he despised

  1187. his birthright

  1188. and later it gets

  1189. even worse.

  1190. Malachi,

  1191. so the last chapter,

  1192. the last book,

  1193. sorry,

  1194. before the New Testament,

  1195. chapter one,

1196. the oracle of the word

  1197. of the Lord

  1198. to Israel by Malachi,

  1199. verse two,

  1200. I have loved you,

  1201. says the Lord,

  1202. but you say,

1203. how have you loved us?

  1204. Is not Esau

  1205. Jacob's brother,

  1206. declares the Lord.

1207. Yet I have loved Jacob

  1208. but Esau

  1209. I have hated.

  1210. Whoa.

  1211. Esau gave his birthright

1212. up for a bowl of soup,

1213. probably not the best idea

1214. or at the very least

  1215. a very bad deal

1216. and yet you get to the point

  1217. where now it's recorded

1218. that not only did he

  1219. despise his birthright

1220. but then God hates him.

1221. Is that confusing to you?

  1222. It's a little bit overwhelming

  1223. for me

1224. and let's just carry on

  1225. a little bit

  1226. and bear with me.

1227. We're going to keep going now

  1228. towards the end of

  1229. the New Testament

1230. in the book of Hebrews

1231. so see if you can find that.

  1232. Chapter 12.

  1233. Bear in mind,

  1234. Hebrews chapter 11

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

1235. is the hall of faith,

  1236. hall of fame.

1237. These people who were trusted,

  1238. who weren't perfect either,

  1239. who didn't really get

  1240. what God promised them

  1241. but they saw something,

  1242. they saw a city

  1243. much further,

  1244. a country much further

1245. than they were yearning for

  1246. and then the beginning

  1247. of chapter 12

  1248. talks about Jesus

  1249. and then

1250. with all these famous people

  1251. in the Bible

  1252. in Hebrews 11

1253. and then talking about Jesus

1254. and guess who shows up

1255. in the middle of Hebrews chapter 12?

    Hebrews 12 chapter mention

  1256. Poor Esau.

  1257. Redhead guy.

  1258. The skillful hunter.

  1259. And it says this.

  1260. Hebrews chapter 12

    Hebrews 12:16

  1261. verse 16.

1262. That no one is sexually immoral

  1263. or unholy

  1264. like Esau

  1265. who sold his birthright

  1266. for a single meal.

1267. For you know that afterward

  1268. when he desired

  1269. to inherit the blessing

  1270. he was rejected

1271. for he found no chance

  1272. to repent

  1273. though he sought it

  1274. with tears.

  1275. Whew.

  1276. Trust me,

  1277. I didn't really want to

1278. kind of go into all this

  1279. because it doesn't seem

  1280. the most pleasing

  1281. and doesn't seem

1282. the most kind of cushy

  1283. and lovey-dovey

  1284. but here we have

  1285. someone who chose

  1286. a bowl of soup

  1287. an idol

  1288. for instant gratification

1289. but then you end up

  1290. in a place

  1291. where it's recorded

  1292. in scripture

  1293. that not only

1294. does God love his brother

1295. but he actually hates Esau

1296. and then you see here

  1297. in Hebrews 12

1298. that he is not only

1299. just choosing a bowl of soup

  1300. he's also sexually immoral

  1301. or unholy

  1302. like Esau.

1303. And here we have again

1304. the slippery slope of sin

  1305. because that was one

  1306. isolated event

  1307. of him deciding

  1308. that actually

1309. actually so the word hated here

  1310. the word despised here

1311. was actually a Hebrew idiom

1312. that I want to unpack

  1313. a little bit

  1314. and that word

  1315. doesn't actually mean

  1316. I hate you

  1317. that it's not quite

  1318. the modern interpretation

  1319. what it really meant

  1320. at that time

1321. the readers would have understood

  1322. was actually

1323. he just passed over it

1324. he just didn't choose it

  1325. he rejected it

  1326. so in some ways

  1327. when it says that

  1328. thus Esau

  1329. despised his birthright

  1330. it actually just meant

1331. he just didn't choose it

  1332. that's all it meant

  1333. okay so it wasn't

  1334. hate or despise

  1335. he didn't grow up

  1336. at school going

1337. man I hate the fact

  1338. that I have this

  1339. double portion inheritance

  1340. I hate the fact

1341. that I'm going to get

  1342. so much more money

1343. than the rest of my siblings

  1344. it wasn't that

  1345. it was simply

  1346. he was saying

  1347. actually

  1348. I just don't choose it

  1349. it's not important

  1350. to me

  1351. which in one hand

1352. if you say it like that

  1353. doesn't sound as serious

  1354. as despise or hate

  1355. until you are talking

  1356. about God

  1357. think about us

  1358. think about the times

  1359. that we pass over

  1360. God

  1361. think about the times

  1362. that we know

1363. that we want to spend

  1364. time with God

  1365. and read our Bible

  1366. and do our prayers

  1367. and be in devotion

  1368. with God

1369. and then yet we choose

  1370. to pass over him

  1371. to do something else

  1372. like what

  1373. like scroll

  1374. on Instagram instead

  1375. in some ways

  1376. it isn't that different

  1377. this guy who

  1378. is hungry

  1379. choosing a bowl

  1380. of soup

  1381. ends up being described

  1382. as sexually immoral

  1383. and unholy

  1384. the word there

  1385. another version

  1386. would be

  1387. he spoke profanity

  1388. over this birthright

  1389. what was he saying

  1390. what does profanity mean

  1391. we all know

  1392. it's actually

  1393. it just means

  1394. it's the opposite

  1395. of holy

  1396. it's common

  1397. it's

  1398. so basically

  1399. what it's saying

  1400. is that Esau

  1401. had something

  1402. that was so holy

  1403. so precious

  1404. that represented

  1405. God's covenant love

  1406. and yet he just

  1407. dismissed it

  1408. and said

  1409. whatever

  1410. he treated it

  1411. like a thumbs up

  1412. like on Facebook

  1413. with the added context

  1414. that no one uses

  1415. Facebook anymore

  1416. that's what he

  1417. treated it like

  1418. he decided

  1419. I don't want

  1420. this unconditional

  1421. covenantal love

  1422. and promise

  1423. fulfilled by God

  1424. and I'm going to

  1425. choose this

  1426. thumbs up

  1427. on a website

  1428. that no one uses

  1429. anymore

  1430. that's why

  1431. it was unholy

  1432. that's

  1433. he chose

  1434. the other

  1435. he chose

  1436. to pass over

1437. was what he was saying

  1438. and actually

  1439. it's interesting

  1440. he says

  1441. sorry

  1442. in Hebrews 12 17

  1443. for you know

  1444. that afterward

  1445. when he desired

  1446. to inherit the blessing

  1447. he was rejected

  1448. for he found

  1449. no chance to repent

  1450. though he sought it

  1451. with tears

  1452. because there comes

  1453. a moment

  1454. where it's too late

  1455. now scholars

  1456. are here

  1457. very clear

  1458. here saying

  1459. what he's doing

  1460. he's not saying

  1461. actually later

  1462. we'll find in Genesis

  1463. he gets very angry

  1464. that he's lost

  1465. his birthright

  1466. because suddenly

  1467. that bowl of soup

  1468. wasn't worth it

  1469. right

  1470. and we've all

  1471. had that before

  1472. where we've given

  1473. into some kind

  1474. of temptation

  1475. some kind

  1476. of desire

  1477. made a choice

  1478. and chose

  1479. to pass over God

  1480. and then later

  1481. we're like

  1482. oh my goodness

  1483. now I'm feeling

  1484. the pain

  1485. but what it's saying

  1486. here isn't

  1487. that he was repenting

  1488. what he was sad

  1489. about

  1490. and what we know

  1491. that he was sad

  1492. about

  1493. wasn't the fact

  1494. that he lost

  1495. his birthright

  1496. or rather

  1497. it wasn't the fact

  1498. that actually

  1499. he lost God

  1500. it was simply

  1501. the fact

  1502. that he lost

  1503. the riches

  1504. that came

  1505. with the birthright

  1506. the blessings

  1507. so he wasn't

  1508. actually upset

  1509. that he was

  1510. distanced from God

  1511. he was just

  1512. simply upset

  1513. that he didn't

  1514. get the material

  1515. things

  1516. that he was

  1517. supposed to have

  1518. this tells me

  1519. something else

  1520. Isaac

  1521. and Rebecca

1522. were part of the covenant

  1523. they had two boys

  1524. twins

  1525. Esau and Jacob

  1526. this was a covenant

  1527. family

1528. what does this tell me

  1529. it's very possible

  1530. for you to live

  1531. and grow up

  1532. in a covenant family

  1533. and still lose

  1534. your inheritance

  1535. I don't know

  1536. whether that sends

  1537. chills down the spine

  1538. of someone who

  1539. has grown up

  1540. in church

  1541. who thinks

  1542. well as long

1543. as I go to church

  1544. because my parents

  1545. went to church

  1546. because my grandparents

  1547. went to church

1548. I'm going to be okay

1549. I'm going to get to heaven

  1550. well

  1551. Esau was part

  1552. of the covenant

  1553. family that God

  1554. was going to use

  1555. to save mankind

  1556. and yet he still

  1557. lost it

  1558. what that does

  1559. I hope it doesn't

  1560. fill you with fear

  1561. but I hope that

  1562. fills you with humility

  1563. that oh gosh

  1564. salvation belongs

  1565. to God

  1566. I'm only here

  1567. I'm only here

  1568. because of him

1569. and so let me not

  1570. pass over him

  1571. let me choose him

  1572. because otherwise

  1573. I choose all those

  1574. other things

  1575. it does

1576. when it comes to God

  1577. it amounts to hate

  1578. because God says

  1579. I don't want to just

  1580. be your first priority

1581. I want you to be

  1582. your only priority

  1583. I don't just want

1584. to be your number one

1585. on the top of your list

  1586. and then have all

  1587. your other things

  1588. I want to be

  1589. your only one

  1590. I want to be

  1591. your list

  1592. and if you don't

  1593. choose me

  1594. essentially

  1595. you are

  1596. passing over

  1597. me

  1598. because the earthly

  1599. things will pass away

  1600. they are so small

  1601. the joys that we

  1602. think we have

  1603. are so small

  1604. as C.S. Lewis

  1605. in that book

  1606. Way of Glory continues

  1607. it's like us

  1608. playing with mud

  1609. depriving ourselves

  1610. of the true joy

1611. that we're going to get

  1612. that is the problem

  1613. of idolatry

  1614. Jesus later

  1615. says in Luke 14

1616. hey if you don't hate

  1617. if you don't despise

  1618. your father, mother,

  1619. brother and sister

  1620. you can't follow me

  1621. and those are strong

1622. words but now we know

1623. that that was a Hebrew

  1624. idiom not necessarily

  1625. for actual negative

  1626. sentiment

  1627. it was simply

1628. if you pass over me

  1629. if you choose others

  1630. if you choose other

  1631. things before me

1632. then it's not going to

  1633. work

1634. the only way it works

  1635. is for people who

1636. not only believe in me

  1637. but then choose to

  1638. follow me

  1639. one final passage

  1640. and this is where

  1641. we'll finish

  1642. is Romans chapter 9

    Romans 9 chapter mention

  1643. because poor guy

  1644. gets another mention

  1645. Hebrews 11

  1646. is pretty famous

  1647. and he gets mentioned

  1648. in Hebrews 12

  1649. poor guy

  1650. Romans 8

  1651. is probably the most

  1652. famous

  1653. and Romans 9

  1654. he gets another mention

  1655. so Romans 8

  1656. this is the most

  1657. highlighted chapter

  1658. of my Bible

  1659. by the way

  1660. just to show you

1661. just to have a look

  1662. so if you're like

1663. oh what should I read

  1664. today

  1665. go to Romans 8

  1666. and if it's a little bit

  1667. like kind of confusing

  1668. to understand

  1669. use the NLT

  1670. use the message

  1671. use whatever it is

  1672. start there

  1673. and this

  1674. this is it

  1675. okay

  1676. but then

  1677. after this

1678. because this is the big part

1679. and actually a lot of our

  1680. worship songs come from

  1681. this passage

1682. if God is for us

1683. who can be against us

  1684. nothing can separate

1685. from the love of Christ

1686. for God works for the good

1687. of those who love him

  1688. I am a new creation

1689. there is now no condemnation

1690. for those in Christ Jesus

  1691. Romans 8 has everything

  1692. and Esau

  1693. my man Esau

1694. shows up in Romans 9

    Romans 9:10

  1695. verse 10

  1696. and not only so

  1697. so actually

1698. just a bit of context here

  1699. Paul's writing

  1700. to the Jews

  1701. who are saying

  1702. well

  1703. just because you're a Jew

  1704. doesn't mean you actually

1705. get into the kingdom of heaven

1706. you can actually be a Jew

  1707. and still miss out

  1708. you can grow up

  1709. in a covenant family

  1710. but still miss out

  1711. because it ultimately

  1712. still comes down to

  1713. what are you choosing

1714. and so he carries on

  1715. and this is where

  1716. he gives the example

  1717. and not only so

  1718. but also when Rebecca

  1719. had conceived children

  1720. by one man

  1721. our forefather Isaac

  1722. verse 11

1723. though they were not yet born

  1724. and had done nothing

  1725. either good or bad

1726. in order that God's purpose

  1727. of election

  1728. might continue

  1729. not because of works

  1730. but because of him

  1731. who calls

  1732. she was told

  1733. the older will serve

  1734. the younger

  1735. as it is written

  1736. Jacob I loved

  1737. but Esau

  1738. I hated

  1739. he was quoting Malachi

  1740. which is where we

  1741. just read

  1742. and you're like

  1743. oh that's really

  1744. unfair

  1745. that's really unfair

  1746. that's really sad

  1747. that this guy

  1748. in that one moment

  1749. of anger

  1750. and hunger

  1751. gives his birthright

  1752. and now it's forever

  1753. recorded

  1754. that he is unholy

  1755. sexually immoral

  1756. and hated

  1757. by God himself

  1758. but what it means

  1759. is that he was

  1760. passed over by God

  1761. that he wasn't

  1762. chosen by God

  1763. because he didn't

  1764. choose God

  1765. himself

  1766. a lot of people

  1767. look at the Jacob

  1768. Benesau story

  1769. and go

  1770. that's harsh

  1771. that's a little bit

  1772. unfair

  1773. but that's where

  1774. the gospel comes in

  1775. that's where we need

  1776. to understand

  1777. what the gospel is

  1778. in some ways

  1779. Paul here

  1780. is being

  1781. a pastor

  1782. in that time

  1783. as a scholar

  1784. of that time

  1785. and he's doing

  1786. an exposition

  1787. of Genesis chapter 25

    Genesis 25 chapter mention

  1788. and he's trying

  1789. to explain to people

  1790. what that whole

  1791. interaction meant

  1792. yes it looked like

  1793. it was just about

  1794. a bowl of soup

  1795. but it was about

  1796. so much more

  1797. about that

  1798. and what it really

  1799. was about

  1800. was this concept

  1801. called

  1802. unconditional election

  1803. what it's really

  1804. about is this topic

  1805. called predestination

  1806. what it's really

  1807. about is this

  1808. idea

  1809. this concept

  1810. called radical

  1811. grace

  1812. if you're here

  1813. sat going

  1814. that's unfair

  1815. we all have

  1816. different children

  1817. they all make

  1818. different mistakes

  1819. why does he

  1820. one gets recorded

  1821. as loved

  1822. and the other

  1823. gets recorded

  1824. as hated

  1825. that just doesn't

  1826. seem fair

  1827. for Esau

  1828. but here's

  1829. the thing

  1830. when we're talking

  1831. about radical grace

  1832. verse 11

  1833. though they were

  1834. not yet born

  1835. and had done

  1836. nothing

  1837. either good

  1838. or bad

  1839. it tells you

  1840. salvation

  1841. isn't based

  1842. on what we do

  1843. and this gets

  1844. a little bit

  1845. uncomfortable

  1846. and churches

  1847. don't often

  1848. like to spend

  1849. too much time

  1850. on this

  1851. but there's

  1852. this concept

  1853. that actually

  1854. the very fact

  1855. that we are saved

  1856. is not by

  1857. our own doing

  1858. the very fact

  1859. that we are saved

  1860. is not by

  1861. our own

  1862. doing

  1863. it is

  1864. God

  1865. who saves

  1866. it is

  1867. God

  1868. who chooses

  1869. it is

  1870. God

  1871. who is

  1872. sovereignly

  1873. for us

  1874. this wasn't

  1875. about a bowl

  1876. of soup

  1877. St. Augustine

  1878. said this

  1879. that actually

  1880. if both

  1881. Esau and Jacob

  1882. got what they

  1883. deserved

  1884. neither would

  1885. have the blessing

  1886. both

  1887. would be

  1888. cast out

  1889. Charles Spurgeon

  1890. says the mystery

  1891. isn't really

  1892. why

  1893. Esau

  1894. got left

  1895. out

  1896. the mystery

  1897. is why

  1898. Jacob

  1899. got chosen

  1900. that's the

  1901. mystery

  1902. because you'll

  1903. see that

  1904. Jacob

  1905. doesn't really

  1906. have that much

  1907. good about him

  1908. and yet he

  1909. still gets

  1910. chosen

  1911. why

  1912. because God

  1913. is sovereignly

  1914. for us

  1915. and he has

  1916. chosen

  1917. his way

  1918. to save

  1919. mankind

  1920. and it's

  1921. through people

  1922. who are

  1923. imperfect

  1924. and you carry

  1925. on in

  1926. Romans 9

  1927. what shall we

  1928. say then

  1929. is there

  1930. injustice

  1931. on God's

  1932. part

  1933. by no

  1934. means

  1935. for he

  1936. says to

  1937. Moses

  1938. I will

  1939. have

  1940. mercy

  1941. on whom

  1942. I have

  1943. mercy

  1944. I will

  1945. have

  1946. compassion

  1947. on whom

  1948. I have

  1949. compassion

  1950. this speaks

  1951. directly against

  1952. this culture

  1953. of meritocracy

  1954. where you're

  1955. saying I

  1956. will get to

  1957. heaven

  1958. because of

  1959. what I do

  1960. because of

  1961. how good

  1962. I can be

  1963. because of

  1964. how much

  1965. the Bible

  1966. I read

  1967. or how many

  1968. sailors I can

  1969. show up to

  1970. how much

  1971. serving I do

  1972. in church

  1973. this goes

  1974. completely

  1975. against that

  1976. the gospel

  1977. is saying

  1978. that actually

  1979. none of us

  1980. deserve it

  1981. none of us

  1982. deserve it

  1983. not even one

  1984. Romans 3

  1985. says we all

  1986. fall short

  1987. of the glory

  1988. of God

  1989. all of us

  1990. even the holy

  1991. ones who know

  1992. the Bible

  1993. very well

  1994. even the ones

  1995. who are going

  1996. out serving

  1997. the poor

  1998. that's a

  1999. different thing

  2000. do you ever

  2001. worry when you

  2002. get to

  2003. heaven and

  2004. you're like

  2005. oh I wonder

  2006. whether I've

  2007. done enough

  2008. or if you

  2009. stand at

  2010. heaven's gate

  2011. and you

  2012. imagine God

  2013. the creator

  2014. looking at

  2015. you and

  2016. saying

  2017. why should

  2018. I let

  2019. you in

  2020. do you

  2021. ever look

  2022. back and

  2023. go oh

  2024. did I

  2025. do enough

  2026. that time

  2027. that I

  2028. spent

  2029. I did that

  2030. reading plan

  2031. and I

  2032. finished it

  2033. all the way

  2034. to the end

  2035. maybe that'll

  2036. get me in

  2037. well that time

  2038. that I did

  2039. kind of

  2040. take a sabbatical

  2041. and go to

  2042. the Philippines

  2043. and serve

  2044. maybe that'll

  2045. get me in

  2046. we all are

  2047. tempted by that

  2048. we all are

  2049. tempted by this

  2050. idea that maybe

  2051. God will be

  2052. pleased with what

  2053. we do

  2054. and what we

  2055. see here

  2056. in the story

  2057. of Esau

  2058. and Jacob

  2059. is that it's

  2060. nothing to do

  2061. with what we

  2062. do

  2063. God has

  2064. preordained

  2065. God has

  2066. chosen

  2067. now that

  2068. doesn't mean

  2069. that we

  2070. don't have

  2071. our agency

  2072. to do what

  2073. we need to

  2074. do

  2075. God's sovereignty

  2076. doesn't go

  2077. against human

  2078. freedom

  2079. and Esau

  2080. made his

  2081. choice

  2082. he chose

  2083. to pass

  2084. over the

  2085. birthright

  2086. he chose

  2087. to pass

  2088. over God

  2089. and choose

  2090. to live

  2091. this way

  2092. but what

  2093. you see

  2094. his grace

  2095. when it

  2096. comes to

  2097. grace

  2098. is God

  2099. chooses

  2100. himself

  2101. and he

  2102. will have

  2103. mercy on

  2104. whoever

  2105. he has

  2106. mercy

  2107. and the

  2108. very fact

  2109. that we're

  2110. sat here

  2111. is actually

  2112. a beautiful

  2113. thing

  2114. it actually

  2115. strips you

  2116. of pride

  2117. because if

  2118. you say

  2119. oh I'm

  2120. going to

  2121. heaven

  2122. why

  2123. because

  2124. I'm

  2125. this

  2126. good

  2127. person

  2128. no that's

  2129. not what

  2130. the gospel

  2131. is

  2132. and we

  2133. all know

  2134. we all

  2135. met people

  2136. who are

  2137. religiously

  2138. very prideful

  2139. if we truly

  2140. understood the

  2141. gospel we would

  2142. empty ourselves

  2143. of that pride

  2144. and we would

  2145. be wow

  2146. we are

  2147. completely

  2148. undeserving

  2149. that is

  2150. the gospel

  2151. and this is

  2152. where I'll

  2153. finish

  2154. you see

  2155. here

  2156. Esau

  2157. whose

  2158. God

  2159. is his

  2160. belly

  2161. who doesn't

  2162. deprive his

  2163. body

  2164. of the

  2165. hungers

  2166. that it

  2167. wants

  2168. this

  2169. firstborn

  2170. that

  2171. loses

  2172. everything

  2173. and yet

  2174. all of that

  2175. is just a

  2176. foreshadowing

  2177. setting up

  2178. for a later

  2179. thing

  2180. which is

  2181. that

  2182. because

  2183. we all

  2184. can't

  2185. save

  2186. ourselves

  2187. the only

  2188. one who

  2189. can

  2190. comes

  2191. to save

  2192. us

  2193. as I

  2194. was walking

  2195. here to

  2196. church

  2197. I was

  2198. holding

  2199. Micah

  2200. who's

  2201. now

  2202. two

  2203. and really

  2204. funny

  2205. he says

  2206. loads of

  2207. funny

  2208. and really

  2209. stupid

  2210. things

  2211. two year olds

  2212. are the best

  2213. because they

  2214. just show you

  2215. who humans

  2216. are

  2217. there's no

  2218. filter

  2219. and of course

  2220. he's at that

  2221. place where

  2222. he's getting

  2223. independent

  2224. so he's like

  2225. no I'll do

  2226. it

  2227. I'll climb

  2228. into the

  2229. car

  2230. and then his

  2231. butt's like

  2232. hanging off

  2233. just off the

  2234. seat and he

  2235. can't actually

  2236. climb in

  2237. and then he's

  2238. stuck there

  2239. or he's

  2240. walking with

  2241. me

  2242. he's like

  2243. oh no I'll

  2244. walk

  2245. and then I'll

  2246. hold his

  2247. hand and

  2248. we'll go

  2249. and every

  2250. I don't know

  2251. why

  2252. I mean

  2253. maybe his

  2254. head's too

  2255. big

  2256. so he's a

  2257. little bit

  2258. imbalanced

  2259. so basically

  2260. he's walking

  2261. and then every

  2262. ten steps

  2263. he'll like

  2264. trip and

  2265. fall

  2266. and then

  2267. thankfully

  2268. I'll catch

  2269. him

  2270. you know

  2271. at the risk

  2272. of spraining

  2273. his wrist

  2274. but I'll

  2275. catch him

  2276. and I was

  2277. like oh

  2278. I think

  2279. all of us

  2280. are two

  2281. year olds

  2282. insisting

  2283. to God

  2284. that we

  2285. can do it

  2286. that we

  2287. can climb

  2288. those stairs

  2289. that we

  2290. can jump

  2291. that gap

  2292. insisting

  2293. that we

  2294. can do

  2295. it our

  2296. own way

  2297. and every

  2298. now and

  2299. again

  2300. we'll be

  2301. like okay

  2302. God you

  2303. hold my

  2304. hand

  2305. let me

  2306. do it

  2307. and the

  2308. beauty of

  2309. it is

  2310. the father

  2311. in heaven

  2312. holds our

  2313. hand

  2314. and every

  2315. time we

  2316. slip and

  2317. fall

  2318. actually

  2319. it's not

  2320. us holding

  2321. on to

  2322. him

  2323. Micah

  2324. doesn't

  2325. get saved

  2326. because he's

  2327. holding on

  2328. to me

  2329. tight enough

  2330. Micah

  2331. is spared

  2332. a fall

  2333. because I'm

  2334. holding on

  2335. to him

  2336. does that

  2337. make sense

  2338. I stop

  2339. him

  2340. from falling

  2341. now he

  2342. has to

  2343. choose to

  2344. come and

  2345. hold my

  2346. hand

  2347. but ultimately

  2348. I choose

  2349. to protect

  2350. him

  2351. that is

  2352. how God

  2353. deals with

  2354. us

  2355. and so

  2356. imagine

  2357. yourself

  2358. as a

  2359. two-year-old

  2360. you've

  2361. chosen

  2362. one

  2363. on one

  2364. hand

  2365. you're

  2366. holding

  2367. God

  2368. and kind

  2369. of loosely

  2370. because you

2371. keep trying to wander away

2372. and kind of go into a shop and be distracted by all these other things which kind of my wife does as well

2373. but then on the other hand you're trying to grab all these other things

2374. that's your idol that's your bowl of soup

2375. those are the oh I'm going to be satisfied by this I want to be satisfied by this

2376. but all the time this is what this is what radical grace is that God is still holding on to our hands

2377. despite our distractions despite the fact that we keep yearning for something else because we are half-hearted creatures

2378. and yet God is that good

2379. knowing that we can't save ourselves he then sends his firstborn not Esau he sends his firstborn who when he comes to creation he then willingly walks into the wilderness and deprives himself of hunger and fasts for 40 days

2380. why? because God works for the good of those who love him he sends his firstborn son so that we would then be conformed and called and predestined to be in the same image and so that we would be perfect just like him

2381. that is the only way when you meet your creator and you're wondering will I get in

2382. someone has said this famously that if your answer to that response is oh I did this I did that it's not going to work

2383. the only response that will get you in is because Jesus did

2384. because Jesus the firstborn son starved himself climbed onto a cross for me

2385. so that I would receive the radical grace that Jacob received

2386. even as a scheming manipulative thinker

  2387. I still get saved

  2388. praise be to God

2389. what I don't want to do I still do

  2390. what I should do I don't do

  2391. what a wretched man I am

2392. yet praise be to God

2393. through Jesus I am saved because of what he did on the cross

  2394. God's perfect plan

  2395. carried out

  2396. through imperfect people

  2397. through dysfunctional families

  2398. this leads you to

  2399. two likely responses

2400. the first is one of repentance

  2401. God I'm sorry

  2402. I am like Esau

2403. my God has been my belly

  2404. my appetite

2405. my yearnings for the things of this world

  2406. I repent

2407. I do not reject you

2408. I do not despise you

2409. I do not hate you

2410. I do not pass over you anymore

  2411. those things are fleeting

2412. and they will be gone in a moment

  2413. I repent

2414. for those of you who have been in the Christian faith for a long time

2415. you might not feel as though those are your things

2416. though I'm here telling you

2417. we all probably have a bit of Esau in us

2418. but your second likely response will be of Jacob

  2419. where you go

  2420. I am Jacob

2421. I have received the promise

  2422. I think I'm good

2423. but really I've been scheming

2424. actually Esau doesn't deserve to be with you

  2425. to be a fair

  2426. neither do I

2427. and so your first response being repentance

2428. your second one is just of gratitude

  2429. and humility

  2430. and going

  2431. why?

2432. why would you do that for me?

2433. why did you not spare your son

  2434. for me?

2435. brothers this is the good news

  2436. is that

  2437. radical grace

  2438. it doesn't make sense

2439. and yet we are here

  2440. let's spend a moment now

  2441. just in reflection

2442. as I pray over us

2443. and invite the team to come

2444. maybe just to spend a minute

  2445. here in this space

  2446. and just ask

2447. the Holy Spirit to lead you

2448. as it says in John 16

2449. that the Holy Spirit is the one

  2450. who comes to convict

2451. us of sin and righteousness

  2452. and whether you feel

2453. as though you are Abraham

  2454. or Lot

  2455. or Isaac

  2456. or Rebecca

  2457. or Ishmael

  2458. or Esau

  2459. or Jacob

  2460. the word of God

2461. the Bible is merely just a mirror

  2462. showing us who

  2463. who we truly are

2464. and whether it is today

  2465. you feel the Spirit

  2466. calling you to repentance

  2467. or just celebration

2468. spend a moment just to

2469. allow him to work and speak

2470. may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may may

  2471. . . .

2472. I'll share one final thing before we sing.

2473. Growing up, there was this book that I read called What's So Amazing About Grace.

2474. Of course, we've sang the song.

2475. And it really makes me think our challenge is my own understanding of what grace is.

2489. He is sovereignly for us.
