  1. that a junior church can be dismissed at this

  2. time. And the choir comes down. We're in Matthew

    Matthew 16 chapter mention

  3. chapter 16. We look in verses 13 to 20 as our

  4. text this morning. It says, When Jesus came into

  5. the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his

  6. disciples, saying, Who do men say that I am?

  7. the Son of Man, am. So they said, some say John

  8. the Baptist, some say Elijah, others Jeremiah

  9. or one of the prophets. He said to them, but

  10. who do you say that I am? Simon Peter answered

  11. and said, you are the Christ, the Son of the

  12. living God. Jesus answered and said to him, Blessed

  13. are you, Simon Bar -Jonah, for flesh and blood

  14. has not revealed this to you, but my Father who

  15. is in heaven. And I also say to you that you

  16. are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church,

  17. and the gates of Hades, or hell in some translations,

  18. shall not prevail against it. And I will give

  19. you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever

  20. you bind on earth. will be bound in heaven. And

  21. whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in

  22. heaven. Then he commanded his disciples that

  23. they should tell no one that he was Jesus the

  24. Christ. Let's pray. Father, this morning, Lord,

  25. we come to an exceedingly important text found

  26. in the Gospel of Matthew. Father, all of it is

  27. inspired, all of it is profitable, but our text

  28. this morning strikes a very important nerve.

  29. Lord God, we hear this great confession that

  30. the Apostle Peter made concerning your Son, that

  31. he is the Christ, the Son of the living God,

  32. that he is Lord. God, would you help us this

  33. morning? to understand the text. Father, would

  34. you give us understanding and illumination. Reveal

  35. to us who Jesus is and what he has done for his

  36. people. And God, I pray that in making much of

  37. Jesus, we will glorify you. We ask all this in

  38. the name of our Christ, in the name of Christ

  39. Jesus, our Savior and Lord. For his glory alone

  40. we pray. Amen. You know, as we think about life,

  41. we know it's full of important questions. If

  42. you're young, you're probably wondering, what

  43. am I going to do with my life? Where will I live

  44. and who will I marry? You think about how many

  45. children will we have? What kind of house are

  46. we going to live in? And all those are important

  47. questions. Yet there's one question that stands

  48. far above all the rest. There's one question

  49. that is more important than any other question

  50. that you will ever answer in life. In fact, this

  51. one question is so dire. It's of the utmost importance

  52. because eternity depends upon how it is answered.

  53. Now, you might be thinking this is a little bit

  54. hyperbole because you're thinking, really, someone's

  55. eternity depends on how a question is answered?

  56. I mean, what question could be so important?

  57. That it has implications for eternity. And the

  58. question is this, it was asked in our text. Who

  59. do you say that Jesus of Nazareth is? Now think

  60. how you would answer that for just a moment.

  61. Because it's going to be answered in the text

  62. before us. Now if we look at the surrounding

  63. context of Matthew 16, the Lord had been teaching

  64. large crowds. But now he's withdrawn from the

  65. crowds and he's really focused on just teaching

  66. his 12 disciples. In fact, he and those 12 men,

  67. they headed 25 miles north above the Sea of Galilee

  68. to the base of Mount Hermon to a land that was

  69. then, not today, known as Caesarea Philippi.

  70. I had the privilege of actually going here when

  71. I went to Israel in 2011. Caesarea Philippi is

  72. the location of one of the largest springs that

  73. feeds the Jordan River. Because of the abundant

  74. water supply and the fertile land, that area

  75. became a center for pagan worship. But it also

  76. became a center for political power. If you go

  77. back to the Old Testament, that area was used

  78. for the worship of Baal. Lots of Baal worship

  79. took place there. But beginning in the third

  80. century before Christ, that was the area where

  81. the ancient Greek god Pan was worshipped. You're

  82. like, well, who's the Greek god Pan? You've probably

  83. seen pictures. He's the half -man, half -goat

  84. god often seen playing the flute. Now, in Caesarea

  85. Philippi, there were many pagan temples built

  86. during the Greek and Roman periods. Herod the

  87. Great, the one who was alive when Jesus was born,

  88. He actually had a temple built in honor of Caesar

  89. Augustus. So at this place in Caesarea Philippi,

  90. there's this large cliff, and it has a series,

  91. and go to the picture, guys. It has a series

  92. of hewn -out places, and you can see them there

  93. in the picture. And in those hewn -out places,

  94. they would place statues of idols there, different

  95. pagan gods. It was a place of pluralism. Many

  96. pagan gods were worshipped there. So I want you

  97. to think. Think about the scene. In the place

  98. where Baal had been worshipped, Pan had been

  99. worshipped, Caesar had been worshipped, Jesus

  100. takes his disciples there with purpose. And he

  101. says, who do men say that I am? Is Jesus simply

  102. one more God to be added to the list? Is he another

  103. deity that is going to be worshipped there? Or

  104. is there something unique about Jesus? Furthermore,

  105. the geography of this place is really important,

  106. and it serves as an important backdrop revealing

  107. who Jesus is. The spring that fed the Jordan

  108. River, it emerged from a large cave. Go to that

  109. next slide. This is the picture I took back in

  110. 2011. So behind you, that's the base of Mount

  111. Hermon. There's a spring. There's just abundant

  112. water there. So water flowing from a rock. What

  113. do you suppose the significance of it is? What

  114. we're going to learn in the text is that Jesus

  115. is the rock from which the water of life flows.

  116. So let's get into the text. Look at verse 13.

  117. When he came into that region of Caesarea Philippi,

  118. he asked his disciples, who do men say that I,

  119. the Son of Man, am? As I just said, in Caesarea

  120. Philippi, there were signs everywhere of what

  121. the ancient world valued. Religious sites, the

  122. temples, yes. Impressive architecture, yes. Political

  123. sites, yes. Caesars, the Roman Caesars were also

  124. honored there. And here, the Lord Jesus turns

  125. to the 12 men, he says, so tell me, what's the

  126. word on the street? Who do men say that I, the

  127. Son of Man, am? Now notice what he didn't ask.

  128. He didn't ask, who do men say that I am? Who

  129. do men say that I, the Son of Man, am? Son of

  130. Man, interesting title. That was the title that

  131. Jesus most often used to refer to himself. Now,

  132. you would say, well, Son of Man refers to his

  133. humanity. Jesus being a man. Yeah, that's true.

  134. In fact, the church has always confessed the

  135. two natures of Christ. Jesus is truly man, and

  136. he's truly God. But that's not all. The title

  137. actually has a deeper meaning, and it goes all

  138. the way back to the book of Daniel. In Daniel

  139. 7, it's interesting. Daniel, the prophet, he

  140. has a vision. Now pay careful attention and keep

  141. in mind our text in Matthew. Daniel 7, verse

    Daniel 7:13

  142. 13. I was watching in the night visions, and

  143. behold, one like the Son of Man. That's not just

  144. an ordinary man. The Son of Man. coming with

  145. the clouds of heaven. He came to the Ancient

  146. of Days. Now let me just say, this is a vision.

  147. So don't press the metaphor too hard. It's a

  148. vision. So we have the Ancient of Days representing

  149. God the Father, Son of Man. We're going to find

  150. out in just a moment. And they brought him, the

  151. Son of Man, near before him, Ancient of Days.

  152. Then to him, this Son of Man, was given dominion

  153. and glory. And the kingdom that all peoples,

  154. nations, and languages should serve him. His

  155. dominion, it's an everlasting dominion, which

  156. shall not pass away. And his kingdom, the one,

  157. which shall not be destroyed. So Daniel sees

  158. a vision of the Son of Man. And he comes to the

  159. Ancient of Days, represented in God. And the

  160. Son of Man was given by God, given by the Ancient

  161. of Days, an everlasting kingdom that cannot be

  162. destroyed. He was given power, notice dominion.

  163. He was given glory and a kingdom. What are we

  164. to learn from this? In Daniel's vision, this

  165. Son of Man is God's anointed king. All nations,

  166. all people, and all language groups are to serve

  167. him in his kingdom. He's God's king. That aligns

  168. perfectly with the second psalm. In Psalm 2,

  169. the psalmist writes, Yet I, God himself speaking

  170. here, I have set my king on my holy hill of Zion.

  171. I will declare the decree. The Lord has said

  172. to me, you are my son. Today I have begotten

  173. you. Ask of me and I will give you the nations

  174. for your inheritance and the ends of the earth

  175. for your possession. Once more we see God's king,

  176. the one God set, is given universal jurisdiction.

  177. Notice the text. The nations are his inheritance.

  178. The earth belongs to him. The son of man that

  179. Daniel saw in his vision and the psalmist wrote

  180. of in Psalm 2 is the Lord Jesus Christ. That

  181. will become very important in verse 18 of our

  182. text when Jesus said, I will build my church

  183. kingdom and the gates of hell or Hades. will

  184. not prevail. So now in verse 14, so Jesus just

  185. asked that question, who do men say that I, the

  186. son of man, definite article, am? So they answered

  187. him. Again, word on the street. Here's the Facebook

  188. answer if you want. Some people, Jesus, they're

  189. saying you're John the Baptist. Even Herod, who

  190. had John the Baptist killed, wondered if Jesus

  191. might have been John resurrected. So that would,

  192. okay, we can understand that. Others like, no,

  193. no, no, Jesus, that's Elijah. Now, that's very

  194. popular. That was a good answer because of the

  195. way the Old Testament actually ends. In Malachi

    Malachi 4:5

  196. 4, verse 5, the end of the Old Testament, behold,

  197. God says, I will send you Elijah, the prophet

  198. before the coming of the great and dreadful day

  199. of the Lord. Now, some said you're Jeremiah.

  200. That was due to an old Jewish tradition. The

  201. Jews held that Jeremiah had hidden the Ark of

  202. the Covenant when Babylon was coming into Jerusalem

  203. to ransack it and destroy it. And they believed,

  204. superstition had grown up around this, that Jeremiah

  205. would return one day to restore the Ark of the

  206. Covenant at the beginning of the Messianic Age.

  207. So John the Baptist, Elijah, Jeremiah, and others

  208. said, well, he's just some prophet. We don't

  209. know who. But notice what no one said. Not any

  210. of them said he was the Messiah. None of them

  211. said he's the Christ. Why? Why not? They had

  212. seen all these miracles. Well, Jesus did not

  213. fit the mold of what they believed the Messiah

  214. would be like. They had certain preconceived

  215. notions of what the Messiah would be like and

  216. what he would do when he came. And Jesus, frankly,

  217. did not fit the bill. But Jesus was not really

  218. concerned with what people were saying about

  219. him. Verse 15. He said to them, and now he's

  220. getting to the heart of it. But who do you? Who

  221. do you say that I am? Now the question's more

  222. personal. It's more pointed, certainly. No longer

  223. who do others say, but what do you think? Who

  224. do you say that I am? And what did the twelve,

  225. what did they believe about him? Now Peter, never

  226. being at a loss for words. I love Peter, by the

  227. way. I think it's so important. He's impetuous,

  228. yes. Impulsive, yes. We see it for good here,

  229. though. He is the chief spokesman for the group,

  230. and he answered for the twelve in verse 16. Simon

  231. Peter answered and said, You are the Christ,

  232. the Son of the living God. Forcefully, Peter,

  233. the rock, He answered and said, you are the Christ.

  234. Now Christ, Greek word Christos, it's the same

  235. equivalent of the Old Testament Messiah. Both

  236. Messiah and Christ. Because some people think

  237. Christ is like a last name, Jesus Christ, like

  238. Ryan McKee. No. Christ is a title. And it meant

  239. Messiah. Both Messiah and Christ mean anointed

  240. one. You know when it was used? For the coronation

  241. of kings. They were anointed. So Peter confessed,

  242. Jesus, we know who you are. You are God's anointed

  243. king. Remember Daniel 7? The son of man gets

  244. an eternal kingdom. Remember Psalm 2? When God

  245. said, I have set my king on my holy hill of Zion

  246. and ask of me and I will give the nations your

  247. inheritance. He said, we know who you are. That's

  248. you. You're God's anointed king. The same one

  249. that Daniel wrote about, the same one that the

  250. psalmist wrote about. In essence, Peter is saying

  251. this, you are the king from God who will rule

  252. forever. Jesus is the long -awaited descendant

  253. of King David who had come to establish God's

  254. kingdom that cannot end. And he continued though,

  255. you're the son of the living God. Here Peter's

  256. confessing, something about Jesus' unique relationship

  257. to God the Father. Do you remember in Matthew

  258. 3 when Jesus was baptized, there's a voice from

  259. heaven that said, this, the one in the waters

  260. in the Jordan, this is my beloved son, in whom

  261. I'm well pleased. In Matthew chapter 14, we looked

    Matthew 14 chapter mention

  262. at several weeks ago, remember when the disciples

  263. were being storm -tossed in that little boat,

  264. and Jesus comes walking to them on the water

  265. in the middle of the night. Jesus gets into the

  266. boat, the storm ends, and what do they say? Truly,

  267. you are the Son of God. Now keep in mind, where's

  268. Peter when he's confessing this? He's in Caesarea

  269. Philippi. Remember, you, Jesus, you are the Son

  270. of the living God. That is a strong juxtaposition

  271. to all the idols that were around them. Listen,

  272. those hewn out places were full of statues of

  273. gods. And in that background, Peter looks at

  274. him and says, you're the son of the living God.

  275. He was saying, here's what Peter was saying,

  276. Baal, not God. Pan, not God. These idols all

  277. around us, not God. And Caesar, Not Lord. You,

  278. Jesus, are the Christ. You, Jesus, are the Son

  279. of the living God. Peter. Now think about this.

  280. Peter confessing that Jesus was Lord instead

  281. of Caesar was almost laughable. Caesar, the leader

  282. of the Roman Empire. He had all the wealth, glory,

  283. power, pomp, and circumstance that Rome had to

  284. offer. There were monuments scattered throughout

  285. the Roman Empire dedicated to honoring the Caesars.

  286. In fact, in this place in Caesarea Philippi,

  287. Herod had built that temple to Caesar Augustus

  288. in his honor. Right at that place. And who's

  289. Jesus? He's an obscure, backwoods from podunk

  290. Nazareth, Jewish preacher. And Peter says, You

  291. are Lord. Jesus did not have a throne. He did

  292. not have a crown. There's no statue erected in

  293. his honor. And the Apostle Peter said, Caesar's

  294. not king. Jesus is king. What? Caesar ruled over

  295. an impressive kingdom. Great power, great military

  296. might, beautiful architecture, sophistication,

  297. and culture. And Jesus, his kingdom, 12 ordinary

  298. men following him, a man who didn't even own

  299. a home of his own. Things did not look like Jesus

  300. was Lord. How could Peter have understood that,

  301. though? How was he able to see who Jesus really

  302. was? Jesus had no visible signs of kingship,

  303. none. So how did Peter know? Verse 17. Jesus

  304. answered and said to him, Blessed are you, Simon

  305. Bar -Jonah, flesh and blood, that is man, has

  306. not revealed this to you, but my Father who is

  307. in heaven. Simon Bar -Jonah means Simon, son

  308. of Jonah. Blessed, to be blessed by God is to

  309. be favored by God. So now here's the point. Peter

  310. did not arrive at his understanding of who Jesus

  311. was through human insight, nor through natural

  312. understanding. Rather, it was through divine

  313. illumination. Peter was blessed because God revealed

  314. the truth to him. Knowledge of Christ, to be

  315. able to see Jesus for who he is, does not come

  316. through intelligence or through human understanding,

  317. folks. Paul wrote about that in 1 Corinthians

  318. 2. He said the natural person, 1 Corinthians

  319. 2 .14. Next slide, guys. The natural person does

  320. not accept the things of the Spirit of God. Doesn't

  321. accept them. Doesn't get them. Why? They sound

  322. foolish to him. Think about it. An obscure, backwoods

  323. Jewish preacher was crucified on a cross, and

  324. we say he rose again as king. That sounds foolish

  325. to the world. And keep going. He's not able to

  326. understand them because they are spiritually

  327. discerned. The Spirit of God must open the eyes.

  328. No one can truly understand the truth about Jesus

  329. in his heart. You cannot understand him unless

  330. God first opens your heart and your mind to understand.

  331. So with Peter, it is so with us. Now, some of

  332. you might be thinking, well, of course Peter

  333. knew who Jesus was. I mean, Peter had the privilege

  334. of spending three years side by side with Jesus.

  335. Peter saw the miracles. He saw the mighty signs.

  336. Healing the sick, check. Cleansing lepers, check.

  337. Casting out demons, Peter was there. Raising

  338. the dead, Peter witnessed it. So, of course he

  339. knew. But friends, it wasn't by seeing the miracles

  340. that Peter understood. Because the crowds had

  341. also seen those same miracles and did not understand.

  342. Jesus tells us why Peter understood. He says,

  343. you understand because my Father who is in heaven,

  344. by his grace, revealed that knowledge to you.

  345. See, the crowd saw Jesus as a miracle worker.

  346. But Peter saw him as the Christ. Saving knowledge

  347. of Jesus depends on God's grace. It always has.

  348. All of salvation is dependent upon his grace.

  349. The most important thing you can understand about

  350. Jesus, that you can say in your heart, he is

  351. the Christ, yes. He's the son of the living God,

  352. yes. That's most important because if you get

  353. it wrong, there is no salvation. Friends, the

  354. value of what Jesus did on that cross depends

  355. on who he is. If Jesus were merely an ordinary

  356. man who died on a cross, his death would have

  357. accomplished nothing. Could not save. But because

  358. Jesus is the son of the living God, his death

  359. has infinite value that is able to secure the

  360. salvation and forgiveness of our sins. The value,

  361. the efficacy of Christ's work, of his death and

  362. resurrection, relies on Jesus being God in the

  363. flesh. Do you see that? Do you understand it?

  364. Do you believe it? If so, praise God, because

  365. in his grace he's revealed that knowledge to

  366. you. Peter confessed the truth about Jesus. Now,

  367. Jesus is going to reverse the tables, and he's

  368. going to confess something about Peter. Look

  369. at verses 18 and 19. And I also say to you that

  370. you're Peter, and on this rock I'll build my

  371. church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail

  372. against it. Oh, man. I knew when I'm preaching

  373. through Matthew, I'm like, I'm going to have

  374. to get to verse 18 at some point. Many books

  375. have been, and I mean books, have been written.

  376. over what rock the church is built upon. Catholics,

  377. Orthodox, and Protestants will often divide over

  378. this point. I don't think we need to divide over

  379. it, by the way. But here's the three main divisions.

  380. Is the rock Peter? Is the rock Peter's confession?

  381. Or is the rock Christ, whom Peter confessed?

  382. Now the confusion comes partly because of Greek

  383. grammar. And I thought so many ways. I'm kind

  384. of a nerd in the language department. I get excited

  385. about this, but I thought, no one else will,

  386. so don't do it. Let me just say, humor me for

  387. a minute, though. Peter is Petras. Rock is Petra.

  388. Same etymology, same root. So what Jesus is saying,

  389. you are, in Greek, it's what it says, you are

  390. Petras, and upon this Petra, I will build my

  391. church. Petros is masculine singular. Petros

  392. is feminine singular. And people, particularly

  393. Protestants, they say that cannot mean the same

  394. thing. Well, they're wrong. It can. That distinction's

  395. not really there in Greek. By the way, Jesus

  396. and his disciples most likely weren't speaking

  397. Greek. They would have been speaking what? Aramaic.

  398. And when you put it in Aramaic, the confusion

  399. really disappears. Do you all know, what's another

  400. name for Peter? We have Simon Peter, and we also

  401. have Cephas. Cephas is Aramaic. You know what

  402. Cephas means? Rock. In Aramaic, it's Kepha. So

  403. here's what Jesus probably would have said to

  404. him. You are Kepha, and upon this Kepha, I will

  405. build my church. Same word would have been used.

  406. You can't do it in Greek, though, because you

  407. have to agree with the number and gender with

  408. the amount it modifies. There, I got it in. All

  409. right, never mind. So what was going on there?

  410. Jesus was using a pun. It's a word play here.

  411. To illustrate, and give me, I hope to prove this.

  412. Are you saying that Jesus said the church would

  413. be built on Peter? Well, first of all, there's

  414. no question at all that Christ is the ultimate

  415. foundation of the church. 1 Corinthians 3, verse

    1 Corinthians 3:11

  416. 11. Notice what Paul wrote. For no other foundation

  417. can anyone lay than that which is laid. which

  418. is Jesus Christ. You're like, case closed. Protestants

  419. win over here. Okay. But the Apostle Paul also

  420. wrote Ephesians and Revelation. He did not write

  421. Revelation. The Apostle John did. But look at

  422. Ephesians 2 .20. Paul, again. The church, that's

  423. a subject, having been built on the foundation

  424. of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself

  425. being the chief cornerstone. The Apostle John

  426. over in Revelation 21. Speaking of the New Jerusalem,

  427. the church in its glory. Now the wall of the

  428. city, the New Jerusalem, had 12 foundations.

  429. And on them were the names of the 12 apostles

  430. of the Lamb. So clearly in these verses, the

  431. apostles were the foundation. Peter is the leading

  432. apostle. He was the leader of the apostolic band,

  433. there's no doubt. Peter was the first person

  434. to preach the gospel to all people groups. Peter

  435. preached the gospel to the Jews at Pentecost,

  436. Acts 2. Do you know who was the first to preach

  437. to the Samaritans? That's right, Peter, Acts

  438. 8. And when we think of Paul as the apostle to

  439. the Gentiles, and he was, but who was the first

  440. person to preach the gospel to the Gentiles?

  441. Peter, to Cornelius, in Acts 10. So Peter was

  442. the apostle who first took the gospel to Jews,

  443. Samaritans, and Gentiles. So clearly, Peter had

  444. a foundational role. in building the church.

  445. He was also the first person to give voice to

  446. this great confession, Thou art the Christ, the

  447. Son of the living God. So yes, the rock was Peter,

  448. but the rock was Peter functioning in his role

  449. as the confessing apostle. This has nothing to

  450. say about the papacy that would develop later

  451. on. Nothing. And notice the continuation of the

  452. text. Jesus said, I will build my church. Who

  453. built? Christ. Whose church is it? Christ's.

  454. Christ builds a church and Christ possesses the

  455. church. We are told that Christ purchased the

  456. church at the cost of his blood. What is the

  457. church? Greek, it's ekklesia, ekkaleo, called

  458. out. It's a called out assembly. That's it. The

  459. church is made up of the people who have been

  460. called out of the evil world system and given

  461. to Christ. That's the church. And those who have

  462. been purchased by the blood of Christ, they form

  463. God's new covenant community. And because Christ

  464. builds a church, he guarantees the triumph of

  465. the church. We say it this way. The church is

  466. invincible. Notice the text. Jesus said, the

  467. gates of Hades will not prevail. Now, some translation

  468. might read gates of hell, but it's Hades is the

  469. word. Gates of Hades. Hades was the realm of

  470. the dead. And by the way, in Caesarea Philippi,

  471. they believe that spring led to the realm of

  472. the dead. All this is really interesting by location.

  473. What is Jesus saying? The gates of death cannot

  474. stop the church. See, the gate was what they're

  475. fortified to keep something out. These were gated

  476. to keep invaders out. See if death has this big

  477. strong gate in front of it, metaphorically. See

  478. if death being gated and the church of Christ

  479. preaching the gospel of Christ bursts through

  480. those gates and sets people free. Death cannot

  481. overcome or stop the advance of the church. And

  482. that will come into clearer focus in verse 21

  483. when Jesus speaks about his own impending death

  484. and resurrection. The word Jesus will be killed,

  485. but death will not be able to hold him. And since

  486. death can't hold Christ and he's the head of

  487. the church, death is powerless, powerless, impotent

  488. to stop the triumph. of the church. What's this

  489. mean? Nations and empires will rise and they

  490. will fall. Kingdoms will come and they will go.

  491. But the church of the Lord Jesus Christ will

  492. never die and Christ himself guarantees that.

  493. The church is invincible because she is united

  494. to the invincible Christ. That's what's beautiful

  495. about it. This is where our salvation comes from.

  496. Verse 19. Jesus said, and I will give you the

  497. keys. And singular plural there. I will give

  498. you, Peter, the keys of the kingdom of heaven.

  499. And whatever you bind on earth will be bound

  500. in heaven. And whatever you loose on earth will

  501. be loosed in heaven. And a lot of blood has been

  502. spilled over this. Jesus says, Peter, I'm going

  503. to give you the keys of the kingdom. What do

  504. keys do? Well, they lock and they unlock. They

  505. open and they close. Jesus gave the apostle Peter

  506. authority. Now stay with me before you throw

  507. stones. To open and close the kingdom of God.

  508. We saw him open it. In Acts 2, to the Jews. In

  509. Acts 8, to the Samaritans. Acts 10, to the Gentiles.

  510. Throughout church history, anytime this verse

  511. has been written about, most people believe the

  512. keys of the kingdom are seen as the authority

  513. given from Christ to his church, to his ministers

  514. who preach his gospel. And when a minister preaches

  515. the gospel of Christ, We proclaim the kingdom

  516. of heaven open to repentant sinners, to sinners

  517. who will repent and come to Christ in faith.

  518. But we also use that same authority to proclaim

  519. the kingdom of God shut to sinners who refuse

  520. to repent. Dr. Barry York, writing on this, he

  521. said, the imagery used here is from the Old Testament.

  522. And I think this helps us understand. At the

  523. time of the temple, Priests were stationed at

  524. the gates of the courtyard. Day and night, they

  525. guarded the entrances from those who attempted

  526. to steal the temple treasures or enter the temple

  527. unclean. Remember those defilement laws? They

  528. had the keys, the priest did, to open the door

  529. for true worshipers to enjoy freedom within the

  530. court of the temple. But they also had the freedom

  531. to close its doors to those who were unsuited

  532. to enter. If you were there to rob, if you were

  533. there unclean, they would keep the door closed.

  534. Now to the church, he says. This is the New Testament

  535. temple. Christ grants keys, spiritual keys, so

  536. that those possessing them can either allow those

  537. cleaned from their sins to enter the door of

  538. the kingdom or to close the door to those who

  539. remain impenitent. Peter represented the apostles

  540. and by extension the church. They're given, the

  541. church, the ministers of the church are given

  542. these keys as a stewardship. Whose keys are they?

  543. The keys belong to Christ. And only Christ can

  544. ultimately forgive sins and only Christ can ultimately

  545. withhold his mercy from those who refuse to repent.

  546. The church merely proclaims what heaven has already

  547. decided. What has heaven decided? That anyone

  548. who comes to Christ in faith and repentance is

  549. granted entrance into God's kingdom. But those

  550. who reject God's son, they are denied entrance

  551. into the kingdom of God. We should not think

  552. that God must recognize whatever the church on

  553. earth decides. That would be a mistake. Rather,

  554. the church has been given authority to proclaim

  555. what God has already decided. And again, what

  556. has God decided? Salvation to all who receive

  557. the Son and condemnation to all who reject Him.

  558. Now this text, verse 20, ends with Jesus forbidding

  559. the disciples not to tell anyone He was the Christ.

  560. Verse 20. He commanded his disciples they should

  561. tell no one that he was Jesus the Christ. Why?

  562. Why keep it a secret? Because although they did

  563. understand his identity, they did not yet understand

  564. his mission. Even Peter, who wonderfully confessed

  565. who Jesus was, we just read about it, woefully,

  566. and I mean woefully, misunderstood what he had

  567. come to do. and we'll look at this, Lord willing,

  568. next week, but verse 21, 22, to whet your appetite.

  569. From that time, Jesus began to show his disciples

  570. that he must go to Jerusalem, suffer many things

  571. from the elders and chief priests and scribes,

  572. and be killed and be raised the third day. Then

  573. Peter, in all his beloved impulsivity, took Jesus

  574. aside and began to rebuke him, saying, Far be

  575. it from you, Lord, this shall not happen to you.

  576. That's when Jesus says, get behind me, Satan.

  577. Even the disciples, including Peter, did not

  578. yet understand that God's kingdom would be inaugurated

  579. by the death of the king who would rise in victory

  580. three days later. They could not understand at

  581. that time that the kingdom of God would come

  582. through a Roman cross. That understanding would

  583. have to wait until Christ rose from the dead.

  584. So let's close this. The important question is

  585. not who others say that Jesus is. The important

  586. question is who do you say that he is? Many in

  587. our day seem as a great moral example. They love

  588. the Sermon on the Mount. Others see him as a

  589. wonderful, gifted teacher even. But Matthew doesn't

  590. give us these options. Jesus is not a figure

  591. to be admired. He is the Christ who is to be

  592. worshipped. He is the son of the living God who

  593. had come to die for his people. He would save

  594. them by dying in their place and rising again

  595. in victory. This is who Jesus is. But who in

  596. your heart do you say that he is? Can you say

  597. that he's the Christ and believe it? The son

  598. of the living God? The keys. Of the kingdom would

  599. say. To all who repent of their sin. And believe

  600. upon him. There you're granted salvation. But

  601. those keys lock. To reject Christ. Is to reject

  602. salvation. And to perish forever. But there's

  603. good news. Today is the day of salvation. We

  604. read it earlier. But I close with this. If you

  605. confess. With your mouth and word Jesus. And

  606. believe in your heart. That God is raised from

  607. the dead. You will be saved. For with the heart.

  608. One believes into righteousness. And with the

  609. mouth. Confession is made. Into salvation. And

  610. I love verse 11. For the scripture says. Whoever.

  611. Believes on him. He will never be put to shame.

  612. Oh, friends, believe upon Christ today and be

  613. saved. We're going to prepare our hearts for

  614. communion. And during this time, I want you to

  615. meditate upon what has just been said. But today,

  616. the offer of the kingdom is extended to all those

  617. who repent of their sin and call upon him in

  618. faith. Jesus will save. Let's pray. Father, I

  619. thank you, Lord, for this precious, precious

  620. word. Lord, it's a healing balm to our weary

  621. souls. Not by works of righteousness, which we

  622. have done. But according to your mercy, you save

  623. us. Your mercy. Your grace. Lord, we thank you

  624. for that. Lord, would your spirit do the work

  625. that only he can do. Would you open blind eyes

  626. and give life to dead spirits? God, we pray that

  627. you would do this for the glory of Christ. We

  628. pray that the kingdom of God would grow through

  629. proclaiming the gospel. God, help us to be faithful.

  630. Lord, help us, Lord, to always look to Jesus,

  631. our living head. It's in his blessed name we

  632. pray. Amen. Deacons, if you'll come as the junior

  633. church enters again. We're going to prepare for

  634. communion.
