  1. And please open up your Bibles to Matthew chapter 28, verses 16 to 20.

    Matthew 28:16–20

  2. ! Matthew chapter 28, verses 16 to 20.

    Matthew 28:16–20

  3. Let me pray for the reading and preaching of God's word.

  4. Heavenly Father, whether we have a building or not,

  5. rain or shine, we have gathered in your name to honor you,

  6. to worship you, to be taught from your word,

  7. that we might be your faithful disciples

  8. for as long as we are here on earth,

  9. making disciples of all nations.

  10. So, Lord, please speak to us,

  11. address us by the power of your Holy Spirit

  12. in your word.

  13. Lord, reveal to us the wondrous things in your word

  14. and conform us to it, shape us with it,

  15. all for the glory of your name.

  16. In Jesus' name we pray.

  17. Amen.

  18. If you are able, please stand.

  19. Let's honor God together as we read from the word.

  20. Matthew 28, verses 16 to 20.

    Matthew 28:16–20

  21. Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee,

  22. to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them.

  23. And when they saw him, they worshipped him.

  24. But some doubted.

  25. And Jesus came and said to them,

  26. All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.

  27. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations,

  28. baptizing them in the name of the Father

  29. and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,

  30. teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.

  31. And behold, I am with you always to the end of the age.

  32. This is God's holy and authoritative word.

  33. Please be seated.

  34. We're not doing anything special to celebrate this this year,

  35. but it is our 11th anniversary since our church's founding.

  36. And it's as good a Sunday as any to ask ourselves,

  37. why do we exist as a local church?

  38. What's our reason for being?

  39. What's our purpose?

  40. What's our mission?

  41. Do we exist to be a force for good in our society,

  42. in our city, in our neighborhood?

  43. Do we exist to create a loving community of Christians in Cambridge

  44. where we can all belong together?

  45. Why do we exist?

  46. In our passage this morning, Jesus answers that question.

  47. The Great Commission, as it has come to be known,

  48. is found in its essential form in all four Gospels

  49. and in the Book of Acts.

  50. It's a climactic command that Jesus issues to all his followers

  51. shortly before his ascension.

  52. And because these are his last words, his parting words,

  53. and because they succinctly summarize all of the Gospels

  54. and the direction and the directive of the four Gospels,

  55. many have called this the marching orders of the church.

  56. And so my main point this morning is simple.

  57. Make disciples of Jesus Christ.

  58. If I could expand that a little bit,

  59. I could say that the universal authority of Jesus enables us to make disciples of Jesus,

  60. make disciples of Jesus among all the nations.

  61. I'm going to talk first about all authority that Jesus says that he has,

  62. and then about all nations, and then all commands,

  63. and then all the days that Jesus commands us to do this.

  64. Mary Magdalene and Mary, the mother of James and Joseph,

  65. have informed Jesus' 11 remaining disciples that the risen Jesus will meet them in Galilee.

  66. So it says in verse 16 that now the 11 disciples went to Galilee

  67. to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them.

  68. Apparently, either they were in the habit of meeting Jesus in this mountain in Galilee,

  69. or Jesus had specifically instructed them to meet him at this mountain.

  70. They know where to go, and they're expecting to meet the risen Jesus.

  71. And they're not disappointed.

  72. It says in verse 17,

  73. And when they saw him, they worshipped him, but some doubted.

  74. Since verse 18 tells us that Jesus came to them,

  75. it seems that the disciples spotted Jesus from a distance away,

  76. and out of awe, and they started to worship him immediately,

  77. and Jesus then comes near them, approaches them.

  78. And so when they're worshipping him and falling before him like this,

  79. they're recognizing that Jesus is not merely human.

  80. He's divine.

  81. They're bowing before him, prostrating themselves in worship,

  82. in acknowledgement of his supreme worth and glory.

  83. But they are not entirely without doubts.

  84. It says that some doubted.

  85. And the word translated doubt here also means to hesitate.

  86. It's the same word that was used in chapter 14

  87. when Peter stepped out in faith to walk on water toward Jesus.

  88. And he had faith to do that.

  89. But as soon as he started seeing the winds

  90. and the stirring up of the waves,

  91. he says that he doubted.

  92. Jesus says to him,

  93. Oh, you of little faith, why did you doubt?

  94. So the disciples worshipped Jesus after seeing the risen Lord,

  95. but some doubted.

  96. Some of them were afraid.

  97. Some of them were doubtful.

  98. They had little faith.

  99. Sure, there was excitement, anticipation,

  100. but there was also hesitation.

  101. Can this really be Jesus?

  102. Did he really rise from the dead?

  103. Is he really the son of God who has taken on human flesh?

  104. It's remarkable that their doubt is mentioned here at all.

  105. If you are writing a book to convince people that Jesus is the Christ,

  106. the son of God,

  107. who is risen from the dead,

  108. which is the gospel of Matthew,

  109. would you include a statement saying that his disciples,

  110. his own disciples that have been with him all along,

  111. doubted after his resurrection?

  112. Probably not.

  113. But Matthew includes it here because it's true.

  114. It's what happened.

  115. Though they should have had more faith,

  116. some of them doubted,

  117. and that fact in turn encourages us,

  118. those of us who sometimes doubt.

  119. Do you ever wrestle with doubts

  120. and questions that you have no answer to?

  121. Jude 1.22 commands us,

  122. have mercy on those who doubt.

  123. We are commanded to do precisely what Jesus does

  124. for his disciples in this passage.

  125. When Jesus saw how some of his disciples doubted,

  126. he didn't condemn them out of exasperation.

  127. How can you still doubt me after all that you've seen?

  128. Calming of the storms,

  129. defeating of the 5,000,

  130. now rising from the dead,

  131. and you still doubt me.

  132. Away from me, you faithless generation.

  133. He could have said that,

  134. but he didn't say that.

  135. Instead, he showed them mercy.

  136. A bruised reed he will not break,

  137. and a smoldering wick he will not quench.

  138. Some of the disciples doubted,

  139. but still they heeded the message of Mary,

  140. and Mary, they still showed up

  141. on the mountain in Galilee, didn't they?

  142. Yes, some of you doubt,

  143. but aren't you still here this Sunday morning

  144. to worship God?

  145. Aren't you still listening to

  146. and believing the message of the gospel?

  147. Do not be disheartened by your doubts.

  148. Continue in your faith,

  149. seeking understanding,

  150. and persevere in faith and obedience,

  151. knowing that Jesus, our Lord, is merciful.

  152. It seems that the combination of fear and awe

  153. is what kept them away,

  154. but Jesus approaches them,

  155. and imagine this scene

  156. as Jesus steps toward them

  157. and draws near to them

  158. and makes this pronouncement.

  159. This is the first time

  160. they're seeing the risen Lord.

  161. It says,

  162. We see four phrases with the adjective all

  163. in these verses,

  164. indicating the comprehensiveness

  165. of this great commission.

  166. All authority,

  167. all nations,

  168. all commands,

  169. and all ways,

  170. or more literally,

  171. all the days.

  172. This is a fulfillment

  173. of the prophecy of Daniel 7, 13-14.

  174. Remember,

  175. Jesus most often refers to himself

  176. in the gospels as the son of man,

  177. and that prophecy in Daniel 7 says,

  178. The son of man approaches

  179. the ancient of days,

  180. the Lord God,

  181. and he's given all authority

  182. and glory and dominion and power

  183. so that all peoples

  184. and nations and languages

  185. should serve him.

  186. So all authority,

  187. all nations,

  188. and he says his dominion

  189. is an everlasting dominion

  190. which shall not pass away,

  191. and his kingdom,

  192. one that shall not be destroyed.

  193. In other words,

  194. all ways,

  195. all the days.

  196. This is the fulfillment

  197. of the prophecy of Daniel 7.

  198. All authority,

  199. all nations,

  200. all commands,

  201. all the days.

  202. First,

  203. we see the universal authority

  204. of Jesus in verse 18.

  205. All authority in heaven

  206. and on earth

  207. has been given to me.

  208. If you remember in chapter 4

  209. when Satan came to Jesus

  210. to tempt him,

  211. he showed him,

  212. he took him to a mountain,

  213. a high mountain,

  214. showed him all the kingdoms

  215. of the world

  216. and their glory,

  217. and he offered it to Jesus.

  218. He said,

  219. All these I will give you

  220. if you will fall down

  221. and worship me.

  222. And Jesus rebuffed him

  223. and then,

  224. and it said,

  225. Be gone,

  226. Satan,

  227. for it is written,

  228. you shall worship the Lord

  229. your God

  230. and him alone

  231. shall you serve.

  232. Now,

  233. having obeyed God the Father

  234. and having fulfilled

  235. his mission to seek

  236. and save the lost

  237. by giving his life

  238. on the cross

  239. as a ransom for many,

  240. Jesus once again

  241. stands upon a mountain.

  242. But this time,

  243. it's not Satan

  244. who offers him authority,

  245. it's the Father

  246. who has given him authority.

  247. And this time,

  248. it's not authority

  249. on earth only,

  250. it's authority

  251. on heaven and earth

  252. because Jesus

  253. has been faithful

  254. and Jesus has obeyed

  255. and humbled himself

  256. before his Father.

  257. Governor Mara Healy

  258. of Massachusetts

  259. has the legal authority

  260. to grant pardons

  261. to state criminals,

  262. but she cannot pardon

  263. federal criminals

  264. because she doesn't have

  265. that authority.

  266. It's beyond her jurisdiction.

  267. President Donald Trump

  268. could not fly

  269. the U.S. aircraft

  270. through France

  271. and into France airspace

  272. during recent military operations

  273. because the government of France

  274. didn't give him permission

  275. because he doesn't have authority,

  276. jurisdiction in France.

  277. He only has authority

  278. within the United States of America.

  279. But Jesus Christ

  280. has no such limitations.

  281. He has all authority

  282. in heaven

  283. and on earth.

  284. Whether it's in the U.S.

  285. or the U.K.,

  286. Russia or China,

  287. Iran or Pakistan

  288. or Nigeria

  289. or Sudan

  290. or Cuba

  291. or Venezuela,

  292. wherever you go,

  293. Jesus is king

  294. and he has all authority.

  295. Whether you live

  296. in a red state

  297. or a blue state,

  298. whatever school you go to,

  299. whatever company you work for,

  300. Jesus is king

  301. and he has all authority

  302. in heaven and on earth.

  303. Are there disobedient rebel forces

  304. at work throughout the world?

  305. Yes, of course.

  306. But that doesn't change

  307. the fact,

  308. the reality

  309. that Jesus is king

  310. overall

  311. and that all authority

  312. in heaven and on earth

  313. belongs to him.

  314. Jesus is seated

  315. at the right hand of God

  316. in the heavenly places

  317. far above all rule

  318. and authority

  319. and power and dominion

  320. and above every name

  321. that is named,

  322. not only in this age

  323. but also in the one to come.

  324. From the archangel Michael

  325. to Satan himself,

  326. no angel or demon

  327. can thwart

  328. the progress,

  329. the fulfillment

  330. of this great commission

  331. because Jesus has

  332. all authority

  333. in heaven and on earth.

  334. All proper divinely appointed

  335. authorities in the world,

  336. fathers,

  337. elders,

  338. governors,

  339. kings,

  340. their authority

  341. is all derivative.

  342. They derive their authority

  343. from God

  344. and have no authority

  345. in and of themselves.

  346. The claim that Jesus

  347. has upon our lives

  348. trumps all

  349. and this is why

  350. you cannot

  351. wall in Jesus

  352. or compartmentalize

  353. the authority of Christ.

  354. Jesus has authority

  355. here in the gathered church

  356. in the Trinity Cambridge Church.

  357. I'll speak of him here

  358. when we are gathered

  359. but I will not speak of him

  360. to my neighbors.

  361. Jesus has authority

  362. here in the U.S.

  363. where we have freedom

  364. of religion

  365. but in these countries

  366. where converting

  367. to Christianity

  368. is outlawed

  369. where I'll be persecuted

  370. for my faith,

  371. well there

  372. that's outside

  373. of the purview

  374. of Jesus' authority.

  375. No it's not.

  376. Jesus' authority

  377. cannot be contained.

  378. It overcomes

  379. and overrules

  380. every limit

  381. and boundary

  382. that we placed upon it

  383. for all authority

  384. in heaven and on earth

  385. has been given to him.

  386. God the Father

  387. has highly exalted Jesus

  388. and given him

  389. the name that is above

  390. every name

  391. so that at the name

  392. of Jesus

  393. every knee should bow

  394. and every tongue confess

  395. that Jesus Christ

  396. is Lord

  397. to the glory

  398. of God the Father.

  399. God has put all things

  400. in subjection

  401. under Jesus

  402. so that in the end

  403. when the Son

  404. gladly submits

  405. and subjects himself

  406. to the Father

  407. all glory redounds

  408. to him

  409. so that God

  410. may be all in all.

  411. Are you aggrieved

  412. by the fact

  413. that there are rebels

  414. who defy

  415. the lordship of Christ

  416. in our city

  417. and throughout the world?

  418. Does it make you

  419. indignant

  420. that as the gospel

  421. goes forth

  422. in the world

  423. and as King Jesus

  424. rises forth

  425. in the power

  426. of his spirit

  427. that there are people

  428. who do not bow their heads

  429. before the king?

  430. That's our job.

  431. Heralds,

  432. witnesses

  433. as disciples of Jesus

  434. to go and tell them

  435. what are you doing?

  436. Why aren't you

  437. bowing the knee

  438. before the king?

  439. Do you not know

  440. he is

  441. the Christ

  442. the risen king

  443. the son of the living God?

  444. Have you not hurt?

  445. And the fact

  446. that Jesus

  447. has all authority

  448. is the basis

  449. and the warrant

  450. for the great commission

  451. to go and make disciples

  452. of all nations.

  453. Look at verse 19.

  454. It says,

  455. go therefore

  456. and make disciples

  457. of all nations.

  458. Jesus has

  459. all authority.

  460. Therefore,

  461. go and make disciples

  462. of all nations.

  463. If Jesus were

  464. a local governor

  465. or a provincial ruler,

  466. we will not have

  467. to make disciples

  468. of all nations.

  469. But because he is

  470. the king of kings

  471. and lord of lords

  472. who has all authority

  473. in heaven and on earth,

  474. we must make disciples

  475. of all nations.

  476. There's a notable contrast

  477. between Matthew 28, 19

  478. and Matthew 10, verse 5.

    Matthew 10:5

  479. In Matthew 10, verse 5,

    Matthew 10:5

  480. prior to his death

  481. and resurrection,

  482. Jesus sent his disciples

  483. out with this instruction.

  484. Go nowhere

  485. among the Gentiles

  486. and enter no town

  487. of the Samaritans,

  488. but go rather

  489. to the lost sheep

  490. of the house of Israel

  491. and proclaim as you go,

  492. saying the kingdom

  493. of heaven is at hand.

  494. That word Gentiles

  495. there in Matthew 10

  496. is a different translation

  497. of the same Greek word

  498. that's translated

  499. in 28, 19

  500. as nations.

  501. So then in chapter 10,

  502. Jesus said,

  503. don't go to the nations.

  504. But in chapter 28,

  505. he says, go to all the nations.

  506. Why the sudden turnaround?

  507. As Jesus said in John 12, 32,

  508. it's when Jesus is lifted up

  509. from the earth

  510. in his death on the cross

  511. that he draws all the nations,

  512. all peoples to himself.

  513. It's at the cross

  514. that Jesus disarmed

  515. the rulers and the authorities

  516. and put them to open shame

  517. by triumphing over them.

  518. It's at the cross

  519. that Jesus broke down

  520. the dividing wall of hostility

  521. in his flesh

  522. between Jews and Gentiles

  523. by fulfilling the law.

  524. It's only after his death

  525. and resurrection

  526. that we can proclaim

  527. the good news of salvation

  528. to Gentiles,

  529. to all nations.

  530. This is why Jesus said

  531. in John 4, 22,

  532. that salvation is from the Jews.

  533. And Paul echoes that

  534. in Romans 1, 16.

  535. The gospel is the power

  536. of God for salvation

  537. to everyone who believes,

  538. to the Jew first

  539. and also to the Greek.

  540. The Lord spoke to his messianic king

  541. in Psalm 2, 8,

  542. Ask of me

  543. and I will make the nations

  544. your heritage

  545. and the ends of the earth

  546. your possession.

  547. And that's precisely

  548. what God has done

  549. for Jesus

  550. in raising him

  551. from the dead.

  552. The salvation is from the Jews,

  553. but it is no longer

  554. exclusively for the Jews.

  555. God's plan all along

  556. was for salvation

  557. to go to all the nations

  558. from the Jews

  559. as he had promised to Abram

  560. in Genesis chapter 12.

    Genesis 12 chapter mention

  561. This mission

  562. that God calls us to,

  563. that God involves us in,

  564. is not a small thing.

  565. It is grand,

  566. it is glorious,

  567. and it is cosmic in scope.

  568. So let us make it

  569. our ambition

  570. to preach the gospel

  571. where Christ has not

  572. already been named.

  573. There are tribes

  574. and languages,

  575. peoples,

  576. and nations

  577. who have not heard

  578. the name of Jesus Christ.

  579. How can they bow the knee

  580. to a king

  581. that they have not heard of?

  582. There are rebel forces

  583. defying the lordship of Jesus

  584. all throughout the world,

  585. so let us go

  586. and share Christ

  587. and his gospel with them

  588. so that they pledge allegiance

  589. to our gracious king.

  590. We pray for 12 foreign countries

  591. throughout the calendar year,

  592. one per month.

  593. Algeria, Bangladesh,

  594. China, India, Indonesia,

  595. Iran, Japan, Myanmar,

  596. Nigeria, Pakistan, Thailand,

  597. because we have gospel partners there

  598. who are working there

  599. that we support,

  600. and or because there are

  601. many peoples in those countries

  602. among whom Christ

  603. has not already been named.

  604. Can we one day as a church,

  605. as a local church,

  606. send missionary teams out

  607. to each of those countries

  608. to make disciples

  609. and plant churches?

  610. Can we pray and serve

  611. and give and teach

  612. toward that end?

  613. Can we one day as a church

  614. plant churches in Albany,

  615. Schenectady, Troy, New York,

  616. Springfield, Holyoke, Massachusetts,

  617. Burlington, Vermont,

  618. Portland, Auburn, Maine,

  619. Hartford, New Haven, Connecticut?

  620. Some of the least churched

  621. and most unbelieving cities

  622. in this entire country

  623. are all here in the northeast

  624. within striking distance

  625. of our church.

  626. Are we not here

  627. in the capital of New England,

  628. the least Christian region

  629. in our country?

  630. Are we not here

  631. in Cambridge,

  632. the Jerusalem

  633. of higher education

  634. throughout the world

  635. where people from every tribe

  636. and language and nation

  637. come to study and work?

  638. Are we not here

  639. for such a time as this?

  640. Pray that God

  641. would send more labors

  642. into these ripe harvest fields,

  643. that God would raise up labors

  644. from our very own midst,

  645. that we would have

  646. the resources

  647. and the resolve

  648. and the resilience

  649. to sacrifice

  650. and to send

  651. and to make disciples

  652. among all nations.

  653. I also want you to know

  654. that it's not only those

  655. who pick up

  656. and leave town

  657. to be a missionary

  658. or to plant churches,

  659. that they're not the only ones

  660. who are obeying

  661. the Great Commission.

  662. The first word

  663. of verse 19 is go.

  664. It's translated in the ESV

  665. as an imperative,

  666. but it is not an imperative.

  667. It's a participle

  668. in the original Greek,

  669. like the word baptizing

  670. and teaching.

  671. As you go, therefore,

  672. or going, therefore,

  673. make disciples

  674. of all nations,

  675. baptizing them

  676. in the name of the Father

  677. and of the Son

  678. and of the Holy Spirit,

  679. teaching them

  680. to observe all

  681. that I have commanded you.

  682. All three participles,

  683. going, baptizing, teaching,

  684. they all modify

  685. the imperative,

  686. make disciples.

  687. That's the single command.

  688. That's the main command.

  689. Make disciples.

  690. And going and baptizing

  691. and teaching

  692. are how you do that.

  693. And that means

  694. wherever you are,

  695. wherever you are going,

  696. right now,

  697. you should be making disciples.

  698. When we read

  699. the book of Acts,

  700. we see that it's not only

  701. those who travel

  702. to other places

  703. with the express purpose

  704. of proclaiming the gospel

  705. who make disciples.

  706. There are people like that,

  707. Philip and Paul

  708. and Barnabas

  709. and Apollos.

  710. But there are also people

  711. like those who are mentioned

  712. in Acts 8, 1-4,

  713. those who are scattered

  714. throughout the region

  715. of Samaria and Judea

  716. because of a great persecution

  717. that broke out

  718. against the church

  719. in Jerusalem.

  720. They had no intention

  721. of leaving Jerusalem.

  722. They were scattered

  723. by circumstances

  724. beyond their control.

  725. They were scattered

  726. by great persecution.

  727. And yet,

  728. wherever they went,

  729. they spread the gospel.

  730. Wherever you are scattered,

  731. it is our job,

  732. it is our mission

  733. to scatter the seeds

  734. of the gospel.

  735. Maybe,

  736. maybe some of you

  737. are scattered here

  738. because of school

  739. or a program

  740. that you got into

  741. or work that you found

  742. or relationship

  743. that you got into

  744. or maybe you'll be scattered

  745. further from here

  746. to other places.

  747. But wherever you are

  748. going,

  749. therefore,

  750. make disciples

  751. of Jesus Christ.

  752. It's not only the apostles

  753. who receive the Holy Spirit.

  754. All of God's people

  755. receive the Holy Spirit

  756. to be empowered

  757. to go and make disciples.

  758. And if you're here

  759. in Boston right now,

  760. start here.

  761. Moving across the ocean

  762. or changing zip codes

  763. does not automatically

  764. make one a missionary.

  765. If you are not sharing

  766. the gospel here

  767. with anybody,

  768. you will not share it

  769. when you change your zip code.

  770. So start here.

  771. Start making disciples.

  772. Making disciples

  773. also involves baptizing.

  774. If you confess

  775. with your mouth

  776. that Jesus is Lord

  777. and believe in your heart

  778. that God raised him

  779. from the dead,

  780. you will be saved.

  781. If you are to be saved,

  782. you must have

  783. an inward faith

  784. in the risen Lord,

  785. but you also must confess

  786. with your mouth

  787. that Jesus is Lord.

  788. There must be

  789. an outward profession.

  790. And baptism

  791. is the sacrament

  792. that Jesus has commanded

  793. for us to observe

  794. as an outward profession

  795. of that inward faith.

  796. And baptism presupposes

  797. the context of the church

  798. since individual believers

  799. are all baptized

  800. into one body.

  801. When you're baptized,

  802. you're baptized

  803. into the church,

  804. into the body of Christ

  805. as it says

  806. in 1 Corinthians 12, 13.

  807. No one can baptize

  808. him or herself.

  809. It's the gathered body

  810. of Christ

  811. that baptizes new converts

  812. into Christ

  813. and into their body.

  814. And baptism entails

  815. repentance of sin

  816. and renunciation of self.

  817. Acts 22, 16 says,

  818. rise and be baptized

  819. and wash away your sins,

  820. calling on the name of Jesus.

  821. Romans 6, 3 says

  822. that all of us

  823. who have been baptized

  824. into Christ Jesus

  825. have been baptized

  826. into his death

  827. so that we might die

  828. to our former selves

  829. and walk in the newness of life.

  830. That's why we are baptized

  831. in the name of the Father

  832. and of the Son

  833. and of the Holy Spirit.

  834. Notice that the word name

  835. there is singular.

  836. It doesn't say the names

  837. of the Father, Son, and Spirit

  838. but the singular name

  839. of the Father, the Son,

  840. and the Holy Spirit

  841. which is a startling assertion

  842. of the divinity of Christ.

  843. The Lord God

  844. of the Old Testament,

  845. Yahweh,

  846. who created the world

  847. and who split the Red Sea

  848. and delivered Israel

  849. from Egypt

  850. is the same Lord God

  851. because Jesus is the second person

  852. of the Trinity,

  853. the Son of the living God.

  854. So he has the name

  855. of the Father and the Son

  856. and the Spirit

  857. and that's why

  858. in the book of Acts

  859. people often,

  860. the church often baptizes people

  861. in the name of Jesus

  862. because to baptize people

  863. in the name of Jesus

  864. is to baptize them

  865. in the name of the Father

  866. and the Son

  867. and the Holy Spirit.

  868. There's one name

  869. that is above

  870. every other name

  871. and why is the name

  872. of God significant?

  873. Because a name

  874. is personal.

  875. A name represents someone,

  876. it stands for someone.

  877. A name brings us

  878. into covenant relationship

  879. with God.

  880. I read a news story

  881. of the Rohingya refugee family

  882. from Myanmar.

  883. As a refugee,

  884. at first,

  885. they had no recognized

  886. legal identity

  887. because they didn't have

  888. any identification papers.

  889. They had no official status.

  890. They couldn't get

  891. a driver's license.

  892. They couldn't even open

  893. a bank account

  894. in their name.

  895. But after getting

  896. resettled in the U.S.,

  897. they broke down in tears

  898. when they first received

  899. their official documents

  900. naming them

  901. and recognizing their name.

  902. And the father of the family,

  903. speaking on behalf

  904. of the other Rohingya people

  905. as well,

  906. said to an interviewer,

  907. for the first time

  908. in 100 years,

  909. we can say,

  910. we have a land,

  911. we have a home,

  912. we have a name.

  913. We take our names

  914. for granted,

  915. but having a name

  916. is no small thing.

  917. When a wife

  918. takes on her husband's surname

  919. and declares,

  920. I am one flesh with him,

  921. it's not insignificant.

  922. When an adopted child

  923. takes on the family name

  924. and declares,

  925. I am now a member

  926. of this family,

  927. it's not insignificant.

  928. So likewise,

  929. a convert to Christianity

  930. is baptized

  931. in the name

  932. of the Father

  933. and of the Son

  934. and the Holy Spirit.

  935. They take on a new name,

  936. a new identity,

  937. and they belong

  938. to a new family.

  939. Baptism is the Christians

  940. planting his or her flag

  941. in the ground.

  942. Why do armies

  943. carry a cumbersome flag

  944. into battle?

  945. It's not merely

  946. for visual communication

  947. to provide a rallying point.

  948. It's a point of pride

  949. and identity.

  950. It's about morale

  951. and honor.

  952. So a Christian declares

  953. his allegiance

  954. by getting baptized

  955. in the name

  956. of the Father

  957. and of the Son

  958. and of the Holy Spirit.

  959. I pledge my allegiance

  960. to a new king.

  961. I renounce all other lords

  962. and I belong

  963. to Jesus Christ.

  964. If you're a part

  965. of the king's army,

  966. you have to play,

  967. you have to fly

  968. the king's flag.

  969. I've heard

  970. Pastor Alistair Begg

  971. say once,

  972. there is no such thing

  973. as a secret disciple.

  974. Either the secrecy

  975. will kill the discipleship

  976. or the discipleship

  977. will kill the secrecy.

  978. Making disciples

  979. involves going

  980. and making disciples

  981. involves baptizing

  982. people from all nations

  983. joining the one kingdom

  984. under the lordship

  985. of Jesus Christ.

  986. Jesus continues

  987. in verse 20,

  988. teaching them

  989. to observe all

  990. that I have commanded you.

  991. All authority,

  992. all nations,

  993. all commands.

  994. Making disciples

  995. involves teaching.

  996. Why?

  997. Because the very word

  998. disciple in Greek

  999. means learner,

  1000. a student,

  1001. an apprentice.

  1002. Jesus is telling

  1003. his 11 disciples

  1004. to make disciples

  1005. and that means

  1006. Jesus is saying

  1007. to them,

  1008. replicate yourselves.

  1009. You are my disciples.

1010. Now go and make disciples.

  1011. Replicate yourselves.

  1012. Bring others

  1013. to follow me

  1014. and learn from me

1015. the way you have done

  1016. up to this point.

  1017. This is why

  1018. discipling doesn't have

  1019. to be overly complicated.

1020. If you are a Christian,

  1021. by definition,

  1022. you understand the gospel

  1023. and that means

1024. you can share the gospel

  1025. with non-Christians.

  1026. You don't need

  1027. a seminary degree

  1028. for that

  1029. and you can invite

  1030. non-Christians

  1031. or Christians

  1032. who are younger

  1033. in the faith

  1034. than you

1035. to do a Bible study

  1036. with you.

  1037. Start small.

  1038. Start with one book.

  1039. We just went through

  1040. the Gospel of Matthew.

1041. We're in the last passage

1042. of the Gospel of Matthew.

  1043. You can go through

  1044. the Gospel of Matthew

  1045. with them.

  1046. You go through

1047. the Sermon on the Mount

  1048. maybe if you want

1049. to do a shorter study

  1050. with them.

  1051. If you forgot

  1052. what you learned

  1053. well,

  1054. very conveniently

  1055. all the sermons

  1056. are recorded

  1057. and posted

  1058. on our website.

  1059. You could use it

  1060. as a reference

  1061. and as a resource.

  1062. You open up

  1063. the Word together.

  1064. You teach them

  1065. what you're learning

  1066. from God.

  1067. What you've learned

  1068. in church.

1069. And then pray with them.

  1070. You open up

  1071. your heart to them.

  1072. Show them

  1073. how you are following

  1074. Christ in your life.

  1075. Be an example

  1076. for them.

  1077. That's how you make

  1078. disciples of Jesus Christ.

  1079. And remember

  1080. that you are not

  1081. making disciples

  1082. of yourselves.

  1083. You are making

  1084. disciples of Jesus Christ.

  1085. You are not making

  1086. disciples of Sean Wu

  1087. or Ed Kang either.

  1088. You are making

  1089. disciples of Jesus Christ.

  1090. They are to observe

  1091. all that Jesus

  1092. has commanded them.

  1093. If you are not

  1094. learning and obeying

  1095. the commandments

  1096. of the Lord Jesus,

1097. you are not a disciple

  1098. of Christ.

  1099. In John 8, 31,

1100. Jesus said to the Jews

  1101. who had believed him,

  1102. he says,

1103. if you abide in my word,

  1104. you are truly

  1105. my disciples

  1106. and you will know

  1107. the truth

  1108. and the truth

  1109. will set you free.

  1110. Apparently,

  1111. some of these Jews

  1112. who had believed

  1113. in Jesus

  1114. are not truly

  1115. his disciples.

  1116. Why not?

  1117. Because they do not

  1118. yet abide in

  1119. or remain in

  1120. or hold on

  1121. to his word.

  1122. They are not

  1123. observing

  1124. all that he

  1125. has commanded them.

  1126. Whoever does not

  1127. bear his own cross

  1128. and come after me

  1129. cannot be my disciple,

  1130. Jesus said

  1131. in Luke 14, 27.

  1132. And Jesus doesn't say

  1133. teach them to observe

  1134. some of what

  1135. I have commanded.

  1136. No, he says

  1137. obey

  1138. all that I have

  1139. commanded you.

  1140. We don't get

  1141. to pick and choose.

  1142. We're so used

  1143. to laws

  1144. that we can

  1145. keep selectively

  1146. but God's commands

  1147. are not like

  1148. those human laws.

  1149. And these are

  1150. divine commands

  1151. not mere suggestions.

  1152. Sometimes I see

  1153. Christians act

  1154. like biblical commands

  1155. are mere suggestions

  1156. that you only need

  1157. to follow

  1158. when it's convenient

  1159. for yourself.

  1160. And their behavior

  1161. proves that they

  1162. do not truly submit

1163. to the lordship of Christ.

  1164. They're still trying

1165. to be their own lords.

  1166. You might say

  1167. that you believe

  1168. in Jesus

1169. but if you are not

  1170. abiding in his word

1171. and if you are living

  1172. in willful

  1173. disobedience

  1174. to his commands

  1175. then you are not

  1176. his disciple.

  1177. God is not looking

  1178. for mere

  1179. one time converts.

  1180. He's looking for

  1181. lifelong

  1182. mature disciples.

  1183. Love the Lord

  1184. your God

  1185. with all your heart

  1186. and love your neighbor

  1187. as yourself.

  1188. Do unto others

  1189. what you would have

  1190. them do to you.

  1191. Rejoice and give thanks.

  1192. These are all commands

  1193. that we must obey.

  1194. These are all

  1195. important commands

  1196. frequently repeated

  1197. in scriptures

  1198. but we also must

  1199. not confuse this

  1200. with the great commission.

  1201. We must not lose

  1202. our focus

  1203. on our mission.

  1204. These commands

  1205. are the things

  1206. that we must teach

  1207. the disciples

  1208. to observe and obey

  1209. but that's not

  1210. the great commission.

  1211. That's not the mission.

  1212. Our mission is

  1213. to make disciples

  1214. who obey

  1215. all these commands.

  1216. Maybe you're taking care

  1217. to obey these commands

  1218. in your own life.

  1219. But are you making

  1220. disciples

  1221. who are obeying

  1222. these commands

  1223. and teaching them

  1224. to do the same?

  1225. If you are not

  1226. making disciples

  1227. then you are not

  1228. obeying the great commission.

  1229. This mission

1230. that Christ has given us

  1231. has a narrow

  1232. and specific focus.

  1233. You start calling

  1234. everything a mission

  1235. then nothing becomes mission.

  1236. We have a mission

1237. and that is to make

  1238. disciples of Jesus Christ.

  1239. And then he says

1240. my fourth and last point

  1241. all the days

  1242. in verse 20

  1243. teaching them to observe

1244. all that I have commanded you

  1245. and behold

  1246. I am with you

  1247. always to the end

  1248. of the age.

  1249. How do we know

  1250. that this command

  1251. was intended

1252. for all of Jesus' followers

  1253. and not only for

  1254. the twelve?

1255. Not only for the eleven

  1256. that are here

  1257. because Jesus is speaking

1258. to the eleven apostles here.

1259. How do we know that?

  1260. Because the scope

  1261. of the command

1262. and what Jesus promises here

  1263. goes beyond

  1264. the lifetime

  1265. of the original apostles.

  1266. He says

1267. behold I am with you

  1268. always to the end

  1269. of the age.

1270. The end of the age

  1271. is not here.

  1272. And Jesus said

  1273. in John 17

  1274. he prayed

  1275. for his disciples

  1276. as you sent me

  1277. into the world

1278. so I have sent them

  1279. into the world

  1280. and for their sake

  1281. I consecrate myself

  1282. that they also

  1283. may be sanctified

  1284. in truth.

  1285. I do not ask

  1286. for these only

  1287. but also for those

1288. who will believe in me

  1289. through their word

1290. that they may all be one

  1291. just as you

  1292. Father are in me

  1293. and I in you

  1294. that they also

  1295. may be in us

  1296. so that the world

  1297. may believe

1298. that you have sent me.

  1299. Jesus sent out

  1300. his disciples

  1301. but he's not

  1302. sending them only.

  1303. He prays not only

  1304. for them

  1305. but also for all

  1306. those who will

  1307. believe in him

  1308. through their word.

  1309. All the subsequent

  1310. following generations

  1311. of Christians

1312. we are all sent out

  1313. with the same task

  1314. the great commission

  1315. and that promise

  1316. still stands.

  1317. It's not so much

  1318. a promise

1319. as it is a reality

  1320. and a fact.

  1321. Jesus says

  1322. I am with you

  1323. to the very end

  1324. of the age.

  1325. I am with you

  1326. always

  1327. to the end

  1328. of the age.

  1329. When you share

  1330. the gospel

  1331. with your neighbors

  1332. when you are

  1333. persecuted

  1334. reviled

  1335. and ridiculed

  1336. and imprisoned

  1337. for his name's sake

  1338. Jesus says

  1339. I am with you

  1340. always

  1341. to the end

  1342. of the age

  1343. and is that

  1344. authority

  1345. the bookends

  1346. the authority

  1347. all authority

  1348. that Jesus has

  1349. and the promise

  1350. that he will be

  1351. with us

  1352. all the days

  1353. that helps us

  1354. the weak

  1355. and frail we are

  1356. like the disciples

  1357. who doubted

  1358. to still go

1359. and share the good news

  1360. of Jesus Christ

  1361. with all the nations.

  1362. Let's pray

1363. that God would help us

  1364. to do that.

  1365. Father

  1366. empower us

  1367. with your spirit

  1368. embolden us

  1369. to share

  1370. the good news

  1371. of Jesus Christ

  1372. show us

  1373. teach us

  1374. how to make

  1375. disciples

  1376. all around us

  1377. that King Jesus

  1378. may be recognized

  1379. everywhere

  1380. that from all

  1381. tribes

  1382. and peoples

  1383. and nations

  1384. and tongues

  1385. Jesus name

  1386. might be confessed

  1387. that he might be

  1388. worshipped

  1389. and glorified

  1390. Lord may

  1391. our discipling

  1392. lead to your worship

  1393. among all the nations

  1394. in Jesus name

  1395. we pray

  1396. Amen
