  1. But this I know with all my heart

  2. His words have paid my ransom

  3. But this I know with all my heart

  4. His words have paid my ransom

  5. Well, Father God, thank You again

  6. for the opportunity to be here.

  7. Thank You for the opportunity to worship You

  8. and to sing Your praises.

  9. And thank You for the ability

  10. to call on Your name,

  11. to receive salvation,

  12. to receive provision,

  13. and Lord, to just trust in You

  14. when everything around us fails.

  15. And God, as we gather today,

  16. Lord, we're just reminded once again

  17. of how important it is to just trust in You.

  18. Well, I don't know where every person in this room is.

  19. I don't know what they're facing in their life.

  20. I don't know what they're facing in their marriages,

  21. in their families with relationships,

  22. with friendships, with co-workers.

  23. I don't know what they're dealing with in the world.

  24. But God, You call us to come to You

  25. and to simply trust in You.

  26. And Lord, as we read Your Word today

  27. and we study what it means to be a follower of Yours,

  28. I pray that You would help us to surrender.

  29. And Lord, as the Father come

  30. and ask Jesus to heal His Son,

  31. He said that He believed,

  32. but He said, help me overcome my unbelief.

  33. And Lord, there may be a lot of ways

  34. that we do believe in You,

  35. but there's still some things

  36. that we're just not sure about yet.

  37. We're not ready to turn that over

  38. and put that into Your hands.

  39. And God, I pray this morning

  40. that You would help us

  41. to get to the point

  42. where we are ready to surrender to You,

  43. where we're ready to turn it all over to You.

  44. If there's any area of our life

  45. that we don't believe in,

  46. that You would help us to overcome that today.

  47. God, as we meet together,

  48. it's a wonderful privilege to be here,

  49. and we know we have a lot of church family

  50. who are hurting today.

  51. God, we continue to pray for Ms. Tammy and Pat

  52. as they're recovering from their hospitalizations.

  53. Pray for Sister Lella Rhea

  54. as they continue to be in the hospital.

  55. And Lord, just touch them.

  56. God, we pray for Ms. Helen

  57. as she's in restorative care

  58. and just pray that You'd help her body

  59. to continue to heal.

  60. Thank You for being with James this past week,

  61. and pray that You'd be with him

  62. as he's at home recovering.

  63. Thank You for being with Ms. Jackie Scruggs

  64. and her surgery,

  65. and Lord, just pray that You'd continue

  66. to help her heal.

  67. And Lord, we lift up Joan and Quay

  68. as they're in the hospital now,

  69. and Lord, they're in a tough spot

  70. because they're a little far from home.

  71. God, we pray that You'd touch his body

  72. and help them to get to the point

  73. where they can get back up this way.

  74. And Lord, I know I'm missing a lot.

  75. There's so many people,

  76. so many people who need You,

  77. health-wise, spiritual-wise.

  78. And God, we just pray that You can do

  79. what only You can do

  80. to be with everyone in their situations

  81. all at the same time

  82. and work and move in ways that we cannot.

  83. Jesus, we love You today.

  84. We thank You for being the one that we can call on

  85. to do what we can't do for ourselves.

  86. We ask all this in Jesus' name,

  87. all God's people said.

  88. Amen.

  89. You may be seated.

  90. I got a confession to make.

  91. There's been several people talk to me

  92. about the potential of joining in membership.

  93. There's actually been a lot of people,

  94. and I've been at the hospital for several hours

  95. almost every day for about the past two and a half weeks,

  96. and I honestly don't know who you are.

  97. So if you can text me and call me this week,

  98. if you don't know my number,

  99. I got a business card back there in the foyer.

  100. My number's on the church website

  101. underneath the staff page.

  102. Reach out to me.

  103. Remind me.

  104. Let's make sure,

  105. because I don't want to mess your name up on Sunday.

  106. I'm horrible names.

  107. If you put me on the spot,

  108. I'm not going to remember.

  109. I'll remember you like in the foyer,

  110. not when I'm in front of people talking.

  111. I can't spell in front of people.

  112. I just crumble, okay?

  113. So contact me.

  114. Remind me.

  115. Make sure we have all that set up.

  116. So this morning,

  117. I'm going to go ahead and get Matthew

  118. to put Psalm 23 on the screen,

  119. and I'm going to try to keep the day

  120. as short as possible,

  121. because I have three kids in here,

  122. and I don't want to tempt them

  123. any more than we got to.

  124. So Wednesday night,

  125. we're in 1 Samuel,

  126. and we were studying the passage of Scripture

  127. where King David challenges...

  128. I'm sorry, Goliath challenges the Israelites

  129. and David slays Goliath, okay?

  130. And he talks about some of the things that he has.

  131. So as we were discussing this,

  132. Pastor Wes was kind enough

  133. to bring some of his things.

  134. He brought the staff,

  135. he brought the rod,

  136. brought a sling,

  137. brought a stone from the Valley of Elah,

  138. the same stream that David pulled the stone out of

  139. to slay Goliath,

  140. which was really cool.

  141. But I asked if he would leave these today,

  142. because I wanted to talk with you about these,

  143. because when we talk about God being our shepherd,

  144. it's pretty tough to make that transition.

  145. Like, we like for people to help us when we need it,

  146. but we also like being self-sufficient.

  147. And it's a lot more difficult for men

  148. to come to what we're talking about today

  149. than it is for women.

  150. Women, for the most part, not everybody,

  151. so I don't want you to come up and be like,

  152. man, women power after today.

  153. But for the most part, women enjoy

  154. having someone to protect them,

  155. help them in things of life.

  156. That's a comforting presence for them,

  157. but for men, we like to do it on our own.

  158. And so as God is our shepherd,

  159. he has his staff,

  160. which is more of like a preventative tool of protection.

  161. To be able to reach out and grab a sheep or a goat

  162. or a small animal or something like that,

  163. kind of pull them away from danger, guide them along.

  164. You see these things in cartoons,

  165. and they reach out and they jerk somebody real hard.

  166. That's not typically what a shepherd does.

  167. A true shepherd really loves and cares for his animals.

  168. And so you will watch people who are really good farmers,

  169. they will love and care for their animals

  170. in a very different way than others do.

  171. And so this right here is kind of like a thing to use

  172. to just kind of guide and protect them from dangers

  173. that they can put themselves in.

  174. But then you have this thing called a rod.

  175. And I don't know if you've ever seen

  176. or held one of these things, but if you haven't,

  177. I'd invite you to come up after the service

  178. and check this thing right here out,

  179. because this is more of a business style

  180. of dealing with things.

  181. And you could bust concrete with this.

  182. Like it's made of wood,

  183. but by any means you could kill something

  184. or somebody with this in a hurry.

  185. And when you look at Psalm 23 verse 4,

    Psalms 23:4

  186. I'm going to put these back

  187. so I don't drop them or throw them around.

  188. And it talks about God protecting us

  189. with his rod and his staff.

  190. And one of the things that we have to remind ourselves of,

  191. especially as men this morning,

  192. I'm going to pick on you men

  193. because most of the women are going to the beach.

  194. We have some women here,

  195. but it's going to be really tough for us

  196. to kind of get into this idea.

  197. Like we like being fed.

  198. Most of you have probably been like,

  199. oh, it's nice.

  200. You know, somebody brings you food.

  201. We like that.

  202. Somebody brings you something to drink.

  203. We like that.

  204. But to think about somebody protecting us

  205. and us just putting ourselves in a vulnerable situation

  206. to let someone protect us,

  207. we don't like that.

  208. We don't like to have to depend on somebody else

  209. to really provide for us and make sure that we're safe

  210. and we're okay.

  211. We want to do that ourselves.

  212. And so as we talk about God protecting us,

  213. we've got to overcome this mindset

  214. of all the things that we've been taught

  215. and focused on in the American church.

  216. So for instance,

  217. we talk about Jesus being love and merciful

  218. and gracious and accepting

  219. and how kind and gentle he was

  220. in which God and Jesus are all of those things.

  221. We need him to be that because we are sinful.

  222. We are wicked.

  223. We have so many flaws and things

  224. that we have to overcome as people

  225. and we do that through Christ.

  226. We need him to be merciful and kind

  227. and loving to welcome us in

  228. because we don't deserve that

  229. because of our sinfulness.

  230. So we need him to be that,

  231. but that's not all that he is.

  232. So for example,

  233. as we're studying in the Bible in 1 Samuel 15,

  234. God calls the Israelites together

  235. and he tells King Saul,

  236. go and destroy the Amalekites.

  237. Destroy the men,

  238. destroy the women,

  239. destroy the elderly, the children,

  240. the babies, the animals, everything.

  241. And so while God is loving

  242. and kind and merciful

  243. and welcomes us in and cares for us

  244. and provides us,

  245. there is a side to our Heavenly Father

  246. that we don't talk about a lot

  247. because it's hard for us to rationalize

  248. and understand how we have a God

  249. who could also be ferocious

  250. and vengeful and angry.

  251. And in the midst of that,

  252. that puts us in a predicament

  253. where it's hard for us to understand

  254. and comprehend how God can be both

  255. because a lot of times when we venture

  256. into those realms,

  257. we don't do it the right way.

  258. But God is perfect.

  259. And so this morning as we talk about

  260. God being our shepherd,

  261. we have to submit

  262. to his protection as our shepherd.

  263. And as men, that's very difficult.

  264. For women, you're a little more willing

  265. to do this probably,

  266. but for men, extremely difficult.

  267. That we submit to him

  268. to being our protector.

  269. Someone read a passage of Scripture

  270. to you from Ezekiel 34 verses 11 through 16.

    Ezekiel 34:11–16

  271. Now God gave this message to Ezekiel

  272. when the people of Israel were in exile.

  273. Sometime between 571 and 593 BC,

  274. that's when Ezekiel was writing

  275. the words in his book.

  276. So just under 600 years before Jesus is born,

  277. Ezekiel has this message

  278. and he writes about this relationship

  279. between God and the people of Israel

  280. and how he's going to bring them

  281. out of captivity

  282. and restore them back to the land of Israel.

  283. So I want to read this with you.

  284. It says,

  285. For this is what the sovereign Lord says,

  286. I myself will search and find my sheep.

  287. It's very important that you belong to the Lord

  288. because if you're not his,

  289. he's not going to find you.

  290. He's not going to search for you.

  291. But he searches for his sheep.

  292. It's important for us to belong to him.

  293. I will be like a shepherd

  294. looking for his scattered flock.

  295. I will find my sheep and rescue them

  296. from all the places where they were scattered

  297. on that dark and cloudy day.

  298. Now he's talking about the exile.

  299. When they were pulled out of Israel

  300. and they were sent all over Babylon and Assyria.

  301. I will bring them back home to their own land of Israel

  302. from among the peoples and nations.

  303. I will feed them on the mountains of Israel

  304. and by the rivers and in all the places where people live.

  305. Yes, I will give them good pasture land

  306. on the high hills of Israel.

  307. There they will lie down in pleasant places

  308. and feed and lush pastures of the hills.

  309. I myself will tend my sheep

  310. and give them a place to lie down in peace,

  311. says the sovereign Lord.

  312. Now I don't know about you guys,

  313. but the older I get,

  314. the more appealing peace sounds.

  315. It's not something you think about whenever you're younger.

  316. You typically want to be in the action.

  317. You like loud, you like busyness,

  318. but as you get older, peace is a lot more appealing.

  319. So he leads them to peace.

  320. I will search for my lost ones who strayed away

  321. and I will bring them safely home again.

  322. I will bandage the injured and strengthen the weak,

  323. but I will destroy those who are fat and powerful.

  324. I will feed them, yes, feed them justice.

  325. And so here you have this imagery

  326. of God who wants to take the people of Israel.

  327. Now He Himself has punished them.

  328. He arranged for the Assyrians and the Babylonians

  329. to come in to take them into exile

  330. to punish them for their sins,

  331. because that's the God that we serve.

  332. He's just, He punishes sin.

  333. He doesn't allow anyone to get away with anything.

  334. And I don't know if you've ever realized that or not,

  335. but in your life,

  336. you may think you've gotten away with something,

  337. but you've paid for it in some way

  338. and you might still be paying for something,

  339. or you're eventually going to pay for it,

  340. whether you realize it or not.

  341. We get away with nothing.

  342. God is just.

  343. And if He pays us back

  344. and we can feel the weight of our sins

  345. and the guilt and the shame

  346. and the consequences that come along with it,

  347. we have to rest assured

  348. and remind ourselves that He is very quick

  349. and willing to pay others back as well.

  350. So the first point this morning I want us to get

  351. is God wants to be your protector,

  352. your rescuer, and your Redeemer.

  353. And all three of those things are found

  354. in this passage that we just talked about.

  355. God wants to protect us.

  356. And when you protect someone,

  357. you protect your children,

  358. just imagine your children or grandkids,

  359. you want to protect them

  360. in a preventative way to keep bad things from happening.

  361. God can protect us

  362. and keep things from happening in our lives

  363. that would affect us negatively

  364. or harm us or hurt us in a lot of different ways.

  365. Now, we may not always understand that,

  366. but being a 42-year-old

  367. and being saved for 22 years,

  368. I can look back in my life

  369. and I can clearly see times

  370. where God protected me in a preventative way

  371. to keep me out of places,

  372. to keep me from certain people,

  373. to protect me and guide me

  374. so that certain things would not happen in my life.

  375. And I can look back now,

  376. because looking back,

  377. Vision 2020 on the rear side, right?

  378. You can see much clearer.

  379. And you can see how God protects us

  380. in a preventative way.

  381. But He's also a rescuer.

  382. You know, as David talks about this,

  383. he talked about when he was challenged,

  384. when Goliath was challenged in Israelites,

  385. he said, I'll fight the giant.

  386. He talked about all the things that he did

  387. to protect the sheep.

  388. But then he talked about

  389. how whenever a lion or a bear would come,

  390. that he would snatch the lamb

  391. from the lion or the bear's mouth.

  392. He would pull, that's rescuing.

  393. You know, it's like you get put in a position

  394. where you may not have necessarily

  395. brought this on yourself,

  396. but you find yourself in a spot

  397. where you're just like, man,

  398. I'm in a really bad place

  399. and I can't do anything about this.

  400. God is a rescuer.

  401. He wants to rescue us from situations

  402. that maybe we caused ourselves.

  403. Maybe we wandered away a little bit.

  404. Maybe we did something

  405. to put ourselves in this situation,

  406. but He can come and rescue us.

  407. And the final thing is He's a Redeemer.

  408. Even though the Israelites

  409. were sent into exile,

  410. and they belong to the Assyrians,

  411. they belong to the Babylonians,

  412. they were their property, their slaves,

  413. their people, God arranged for them

  414. to be set free and sent back to Israel.

  415. Only God can do that.

  416. You know how many instances in history

  417. where people are just like,

  418. hey, we got this whole group of people

  419. that we own, let's just let them go.

  420. That don't happen.

  421. It never happens in history.

  422. Pharaoh didn't want to let the Israelites go.

  423. God forced his hand on that.

  424. But in this situation,

  425. God literally arranged for the free release

  426. of the Israelites to go back to Israel

  427. and rebuild Jerusalem in the temple.

  428. God is a Redeemer.

  429. He can take us from situations

  430. that we are stuck and mired in

  431. and we have no control over,

  432. where we are literally in a position

  433. where we are enslaved in things

  434. and we can do nothing at all

  435. to get ourselves out of it,

  436. and he can come and he can redeem us

  437. and set us back to freedom

  438. for how he's intended us to be.

  439. But he can't protect you

  440. and he cannot rescue you.

  441. He cannot redeem you

  442. if you do not allow him to.

  443. One of the most sobering moments of my life

  444. was two years ago

  445. whenever I took Perry to school

  446. for the first time.

  447. Dropping them off at daycare

  448. is totally different

  449. because you get to walk them in,

  450. you get to kind of see

  451. where they're going,

  452. you get to tell them by,

  453. you put them in the thing,

  454. you know who's got them,

  455. and it's like the goodbye process

  456. and the walking in process

  457. is a lot more comforting.

  458. When you take them to school,

  459. and this is 4K,

  460. I mean, this is like,

  461. well, I guess it was 5K.

  462. 5K, you drop him off,

  463. he gets out on the sidewalk

  464. and he's as happy as can be.

  465. He's not scared at all.

  466. He was ready to go.

  467. But I was like,

  468. this stinks

  469. because I don't know

  470. where he's going.

  471. Like, he's walking in that school

  472. and you're trusting

  473. probably somewhere around 50

  474. to 70 faculty people

  475. to take care of him,

  476. make sure he's safe,

  477. keep him safe

  478. around all the other kids

  479. that he's going to go,

  480. get to where he needs to go

  481. and do what he's doing.

  482. And I can remember sitting there

  483. that first morning

  484. and had not even thought about it.

  485. I was like, Lord,

  486. be with him and protect him

  487. when I can't.

  488. And the truth is,

  489. is that God can protect him

  490. and Naomi and Hattie

  491. way better than I can.

  492. But there's a sober moment

  493. whenever they're not

  494. in my sphere of influence.

  495. They're not within my eyesight.

  496. They're not within my ability

  497. to guard and protect them

  498. that they're in somebody else's hands

  499. that it's much more aware

  500. during that time.

  501. God, I need you more now

  502. than even during the normal times

  503. when I can be aware

  504. and I can be there.

  505. And as they get older,

  506. and as some of your kids

  507. have been older

  508. and are getting older,

  509. you begin to realize

  510. that you want to protect them,

  511. you want to rescue them,

  512. you want to redeem them,

  513. but you can't

  514. if they don't let you.

  515. If they don't talk to you

  516. about what's going on,

  517. if they don't allow you

  518. into their lives,

  519. if they don't disclose things to you,

  520. maybe they're keeping

  521. to their chest

  522. and boxing you out of their lives

  523. in a certain way

  524. because they're looking for freedom

  525. and they're looking for independence,

  526. you can't do for them

  527. if they don't let you.

  528. And the same thing happens

  529. with us in God.

  530. There's so many of us

  531. who claim to be fathers of Christ,

  532. we said, I want eternal life,

  533. I want forgiveness of sin,

  534. I want a relationship with Jesus,

  535. but when it comes to letting Him

  536. literally be in charge of our lives

  537. and protect us and have that,

  538. we're just like, nah,

  539. I don't want to do that.

  540. Another good example is,

  541. I like

  542. to at least be able

  543. to feel like I can protect myself

  544. and my family.

  545. Whether it's something as simple

  546. as carrying a pocket knife,

  547. that may sound silly.

  548. I've carried a pocket knife

  549. since I was like six years old.

  550. Carried one to school

  551. almost every day growing up

  552. and now there's not many places

  553. that you can go

  554. where there's not metal detectors

  555. and it's like you can't even,

  556. it's like going on an airplane,

  557. you can't even take a pair

  558. of fingernail clippers somewhere now

  559. and it's like they have these buildings

  560. that are so guarded

  561. and they have all these metal detectors

  562. and then they have these security guards

  563. and no offense,

  564. I don't know if anybody here

  565. is a security guard.

  566. Some of you are more than capable,

  567. some of you are not.

  568. And you go in some of those buildings

  569. and you see the security guards

  570. and there's some people that I look at

  571. and I'm like,

  572. I do not trust that person

  573. to die for me

  574. or my family

  575. and that's just how I feel.

  576. And there's sometimes

  577. you go around somewhere

  578. and it's like you're with someone

  579. who has that responsibility

  580. to maintain the safety

  581. and integrity of everything

  582. that's going on.

  583. It's like, I don't know,

  584. I don't know them

  585. but I would,

  586. I would trust them.

  587. If something happens,

  588. I'm going with them.

  589. But a lot of times

  590. I don't feel that way.

  591. And as believers,

  592. you and I have a decision

  593. to make this morning

  594. as to do we truly believe

  595. what we say that we believe

  596. about Jesus.

  597. Okay, He can provide me eternal life.

  598. Okay, He can forgive me of sin.

  599. Do I really trust Him

  600. to guide me to places in life?

  601. Even though it's maybe not necessarily

  602. where I want to go,

  603. do I trust Him to lead me there

  604. and do I trust Him to protect me

  605. along the way?

  606. Because the truth is,

  607. a lot of us don't,

  608. don't trust Him to do that.

  609. We haven't connected those dots yet.

  610. But in John chapter 10 verses 6 through 16,

    John 10:6–16

  611. you jump to the New Testament,

  612. you jump to this

  613. account of John where he's talking about

  614. this conversation that Jesus is having

  615. with His disciples and the people of Israel.

  616. And the title of this passage is

  617. The Good Shepherd.

  618. So God is described as the Good Shepherd

  619. in Ezekiel 34.

  620. Jesus is described as the Good Shepherd

  621. in John 10.

  622. Let's read verses 6 through 16.

  623. Let's see what Jesus said about it.

  624. Those who heard Jesus use this illustration

  625. didn't understand what He meant.

  626. So He explained it to them.

  627. I tell you the truth.

  628. I am the gate for the sheep.

  629. So He's not just the shepherd,

  630. but He's also the gate.

  631. See, the idea is if you can build a wall

  632. and you can have a gate,

  633. you can offer extra protection

  634. for the sheep.

  635. A lot of us don't like boundaries.

  636. We think boundaries hinder us.

  637. We think laws or rules or

  638. commands hinder us, but in truth,

  639. there's many things out there

  640. that exist to protect us.

  641. Jesus is the gate for the sheep.

  642. All who came before Me were thieves and robbers,

  643. but the true sheep did not listen to them.

  644. Yes, I am the gate.

  645. Those who come in through Me will be saved.

  646. They will come and go freely

  647. and will find good pastures

  648. because the great thing about Christ

  649. is like, yeah, there's a fence

  650. and there's a gate.

  651. There's limitations at certain times,

  652. but you also have the ability

  653. to come and go freely.

  654. And what you find is,

  655. is that many times people who think,

  656. well, I'm living outside the fence,

  657. I'm living outside the gate,

  658. they're enslaved

  659. and they can't come and go freely.

  660. They're just in what they're in.

  661. The thief's purpose is to steal

  662. and kill and destroy.

  663. My purpose is to give them

  664. a rich and satisfying life.

  665. Every person in this room this morning

  666. will raise their hand and say,

  667. I want a rich and satisfying life.

  668. That sounds good.

  669. And Jesus said,

  670. my purpose is to give you

  671. a rich and satisfying life.

  672. He doesn't put you in a pin

  673. behind a gate

  674. to hold you hostage or captive

  675. or keep you enslaved.

  676. No, that exists there for your protection.

  677. And as He protects you,

  678. you can come and go freely.

  679. And the purpose is to give you

  680. a rich and satisfying life.

  681. I'm the good shepherd.

  682. The good shepherd sacrifices

  683. his life for the sheep.

  684. A hired hand will run

  685. when he sees a wolf coming.

  686. He will abandon the sheep

  687. because they don't belong to him

  688. and he isn't their shepherd.

  689. And so the wolf attacks them

  690. and scatters the flock.

  691. The hired hand runs away

  692. because he's working only for the money

  693. and doesn't really care about the sheep.

  694. This morning,

  695. a lot of us claim to believe

  696. and love Jesus.

  697. A lot of us claim to want

  698. to go to heaven

  699. and spend eternal life with Him.

  700. But we have yet decided

  701. whether or not we're going to treat Him

  702. like a hired hand

  703. or if He's actually the one

  704. that owns us and loves us

  705. and is willing to lay down His life for us.

  706. Those are two very different things.

  707. And the way that those people get treated

  708. are very different from one another.

  709. In verse 14, he says again,

  710. I am the good shepherd.

  711. I know my own sheep and they know me

  712. just as my father knows me

  713. and I know the father.

  714. So I sacrifice my life for the sheep.

  715. I have other sheep too

  716. that are not in the sheepfold.

  717. I must bring them also.

  718. They will listen to my voice

  719. and there will be one flock

  720. with one shepherd.

  721. The awesome thing about Jesus is

  722. that if you truly believe in Him

  723. and you believe what you say

  724. you believe about Him,

  725. you trust that He has already

  726. laid down His life for you.

  727. He has already died for you.

  728. And so to trust that He would

  729. lay down His life,

  730. why would somebody who's willing

  731. to die for us

  732. not have our best interest in mind?

  733. Because this morning

  734. I want you to think about

  735. who it is in this world

  736. that you would be willing to die for.

  737. And it would only be somebody

  738. that you probably have nothing

  739. but their best interest in mind.

  740. Because that's a price to pay

  741. that you can't get back.

  742. It's sealed, it's done.

  743. And Jesus paid that price for us.

  744. If you want to be saved,

  745. it's through Him.

  746. You got to come through the gate.

  747. If you want to have a rich

  748. and satisfying life,

  749. it's through Him.

  750. You want to be protected,

  751. it's through Him.

  752. The green pastures,

  753. the peaceful streams,

  754. the protection,

  755. it only comes through Him.

  756. But we have to have faith

  757. and trust in Him to do that.

  758. So point number two,

  759. we must trust Him to protect us.

  760. And that's really hard.

  761. One of the hardest things

  762. I've had to do in my life

  763. is to trust God

  764. to just take care of things many times.

  765. And I've talked about it years ago.

  766. You know, I was in this situation

  767. where I had someone in authority

  768. over me about 12 years back,

  769. and it was a really ugly situation.

  770. And I felt that that person

  771. who was in authority

  772. had done and said some things

  773. that were wrong,

  774. and I felt like that needed to be addressed

  775. and needed to be held accountable.

  776. And I had exhausted

  777. every single aspect

  778. that I could exhaust

  779. to do it the right way.

  780. And from that point forward,

  781. if I was going to continue

  782. to take this into my hands

  783. and try to see that

  784. this thing was rectified,

  785. it was going to be sinful

  786. and divisive within the church

  787. and the body of Christ.

  788. And as we did that,

  789. I had to let it go.

  790. I had to totally turn

  791. that thing over to God.

  792. But one thing we have

  793. to remind ourselves of

  794. is that God is faithful.

  795. God is capable.

  796. He is equipped.

  797. He is powerful,

  798. and He is more than able

  799. to do anything

  800. that we need Him to do.

  801. That's a fake thing.

  802. Do you believe that?

  803. Do you believe that

  804. in the situation of your life?

  805. Because there's probably

  806. at least one person

  807. who found multiple people

  808. in this room who feel like

  809. you've been mistreated,

  810. you've been done wrong,

  811. there's something going on in your life

  812. that you want it to be fixed,

  813. and you're angry with someone,

  814. someone hurts you,

  815. and you want to do something

  816. like the greatest desire

  817. in your life is to get even.

  818. And that's not abnormal.

  819. I got three kids.

  820. They haven't hardly

  821. learned anything yet,

  822. but let me tell you,

  823. they're very good at revenge.

  824. As soon as one does

  825. one to the other,

  826. it's eye for an eye

  827. and tooth for the tooth.

  828. They knew the law of Moses

  829. long before we ever told it to them.

  830. They know.

  831. And that carries with us

  832. as adults, too.

  833. The question is,

  834. is do we trust in God

  835. to take care of that?

  836. In Ephesians 3, verse 20,

    Ephesians 3:20

  837. Paul writes to the church

  838. in Ephesus and says,

  839. Now, all glory to God,

  840. who is able,

  841. through His mighty power,

  842. to work within us,

  843. to accomplish infinitely more

  844. than we might ask or think.

  845. Truthfully, when we pray to God,

  846. we're like the dad

  847. who asked Jesus to come heal his son.

  848. We believe that he can,

  849. but there's always

  850. a little bit of doubt

  851. as to whether or not

  852. he's going to.

  853. And as we sit here this morning,

  854. we say, okay,

  855. I'm going to rely on God

  856. to protect me.

  857. There's probably enough faith

  858. to know that God

  859. can protect me,

  860. but then there's that

  861. little bit of doubt that says,

  862. but I don't know

  863. if he's going to.

  864. And then we find ourselves

  865. as people,

  866. we give to God,

  867. but then we take.

  868. We give to God and we take.

  869. That's the problem

  870. with living sacrifices.

  871. You're called to be

  872. a living sacrifice.

  873. You know what the problem is

  874. with living sacrifices?

  875. They can get up

  876. and get off the altar.

  877. We give God our faith.

  878. We give God our trust,

  879. but then in a moment,

  880. we're like, no, not today.

  881. We pull it back.

  882. But God is more than able,

  883. more than capable.

  884. He's equipped.

  885. He's faithful.

  886. And there has to be

  887. a point in our life

  888. where we turn it over to Him.

  889. And in that situation in my life

  890. 12 years ago,

  891. whenever I was dealing with that,

  892. and that was super,

  893. that was super tough, man,

  894. because the person who was

  895. in authority over me

  896. was one of the people

  897. who should have been

  898. one of the most spiritually

  899. healthy and godly people

  900. that I knew in my life

  901. at that time.

  902. And it was a very ugly situation.

  903. And I had to turn that over

  904. to God and let God deal with it.

  905. And 12 years later,

  906. I can sit,

  907. well, it's actually 14 years later.

  908. 14 years later,

  909. I can look back on that situation

  910. and I can see

  911. perfectly clear how God

  912. dealt in that situation.

  913. How God dealt with that individual.

  914. But guess what?

  915. I can see even more clear

  916. how God dealt with me.

  917. Because there was things

  918. that I did and said

  919. that I couldn't see

  920. in that moment.

  921. That they were immature.

  922. They were wrong.

  923. I shouldn't have said them,

  924. I shouldn't have done them

  925. in different situations,

  926. in different kinds.

  927. There was things that God

  928. had to reveal to me.

  929. And the awesome thing

  930. about God is,

  931. is that if we turn it over to Him

  932. and let Him deal with it,

  933. not only will God deal

  934. with the person who did you wrong

  935. and work a better thing

  936. in their life,

  937. but He'll also work

  938. a better thing in your life.

  939. He's the only one

  940. who can take sin

  941. and use it for His glory

  942. and our good.

  943. That's the whole thing

  944. about rescuing and redeeming.

  945. There's plenty of us

  946. in this room,

  947. like we have messed up our life,

  948. we have done enough

  949. in our life to ruin our life

  950. completely,

  951. and God is the only one

  952. who can come in

  953. and rescue us

  954. and redeem us

  955. and take everything

  956. that was done for bad,

  957. that was done for...

  958. to spit on God

  959. at some point

  960. in time in our life

  961. and use it to glorify His name

  962. and use it for our good

  963. and our benefit.

  964. God's the only one

  965. who can do that.

  966. So we have to ask ourselves

  967. and remind ourselves,

  968. do we really trust?

  969. Do we trust Him?

  970. Solomon wrote in Proverbs

  971. verse 20 verse 22,

  972. don't say,

  973. I will get even for this wrong.

  974. Wait for the Lord

  975. to handle the matter.

  976. In Nahum chapter 1 verse 2,

    Nahum 1:2

  977. Nahum wrote,

  978. the Lord is a jealous God

  979. filled with vengeance and rage.

  980. Again,

  981. hard qualities of God to explain

  982. when we talk about peace

  983. and love and mercy

  984. and all these other things,

  985. but at the same time,

  986. He's jealous

  987. and He's filled with vengeance and rage,

  988. which are kind of negative terms

  989. in our culture today.

  990. So how can a perfect God

  991. be those things

  992. and still be perfect and good?

  993. And I don't have a good explanation for you.

  994. But the only thing I can tell you is,

  995. is when you look,

  996. that He's jealous

  997. and He's filled with vengeance and rage.

  998. He says,

  999. He takes revenge on all who oppose Him

1000. and continues to rage against His enemies.

1001. So many times in passages of Scripture in the Bible,

1002. you see over and over and over again

1003. that vengeance is the Lord's.

1004. It is not your job to protect yourself,

  1005. it's God's job to protect you.

1006. It takes an immense amount of faith

1007. and trust on our part

1008. to allow God to do that

1009. and trust Him to do that.

1010. And one of the great things

1011. that I can tell you this morning is,

1012. is that if you are walking in fellowship with God

1013. and you're living in fellowship with Him

  1014. underneath His will,

  1015. under His law,

  1016. under His authority,

  1017. when someone opposes you

  1018. or mistreats you,

  1019. they're mistreating Him.

1020. And you have a promise

1021. that His anger will rage

1022. against those who oppose Him.

1023. And I'm going to give you two examples.

1024. Because when you go back

1025. and you look at Moses and the people of Israel

1026. complain against Moses in the wilderness,

1027. and as they're complaining against Moses,

1028. because Moses isn't providing what all they want,

1029. Moses goes and cries out to God.

1030. God says, don't worry about it, Moses.

1031. They're not complaining against you.

  1032. They're complaining against me.

1033. And then you go back to 1 Samuel,

1034. which we've been studying on Wednesday nights,

1035. and the people of Israel start complaining

  1036. against Samuel,

1037. and they want Samuel to give them a king.

1038. And God says, don't worry about it, Samuel.

  1039. They're not rejecting you.

  1040. They're rejecting me.

1041. They don't want me to be their king.

1042. And so if you walk in fellowship with God

1043. and you live under His law

1044. and you live under His will,

  1045. then you are protected

1046. and promised the fact that God

1047. will take revenge on all who oppose Him.

1048. Now, if you're sitting here this morning

1049. and you're living under your own will

  1050. and your own desires

1051. and you're doing your own thing

1052. and you're not surrendering to the Lord

1053. and someone opposes you or does you wrong,

  1054. I can't say within Scripture

1055. that God promises to avenge you

1056. or take care of you.

1057. Only thing I can promise you is that God's just,

1058. that He deals with everything,

  1059. that no matter what,

1060. nobody on earth has ever gotten away

1061. with a single thing in this life.

1062. And God makes sure of that

1063. because He is the perfect judge.

  1064. Point three, last one,

1065. we must do our job

1066. and allow God to do His.

1067. We got to do our job

1068. and allow God to do His.

  1069. Now, God's the shepherd

  1070. and He's the protector.

1071. What does that mean for us?

1072. What are we supposed to do?

  1073. In Romans 12, verses 19 through 21,

    Romans 12:19–21

1074. Paul writes to church in Rome.

1075. He's dealing with many issues that they're struggling with.

  1076. He quotes Deuteronomy 32, 35.

1077. So this passage is a direct quote from Deuteronomy.

  1078. Dear friends,

  1079. never take revenge.

1080. Leave that to the righteous anger of God

  1081. for the Scriptures say,

  1082. I will take revenge.

1083. I will pay them back, says the Lord.

1084. So again, you see another passage

1085. where God promises to pay it back.

1086. That He will deal with it.

1087. Now, verse 20 is the tough part.

1088. This is the one that most of you are going to go home

1089. and you're going to feel like you got fleas.

1090. You're going to be itching for the rest of the day.

1091. And you're just going to be like,

  1092. I don't know how I feel about that.

1093. But in verse 20, it says,

1094. if your enemies are hungry,

1095. these are people who wrong you.

1096. These are people who hurt you.

1097. These are people who have taken from you.

1098. These are people who do anything to you

1099. who might be your enemies.

1100. He says, if your enemies are hungry,

  1101. feed them.

  1102. And if they're thirsty,

1103. give them something to drink.

  1104. And in doing this,

1105. you will heap burning coals of shame on their heads.

1106. Don't let evil conquer you

1107. but conquer evil by doing good.

  1108. And so this morning,

1109. the hardest part of the sermon is to accept,

1110. especially for some of you men in this room,

1111. because I can see it on some of your faces right now.

  1112. This is hard.

1113. And I would love to say that I have not mastered this

1114. because every situation is different.

1115. Every time somebody hurts you or does something against you,

1116. it hits a little different.

1117. And we're not always surrendering in every moment.

1118. But as we have enemies,

1119. God's job is to pay them back

1120. according to His will and His plan.

1121. And God can do more to them

1122. than you'll ever be able to think or dream.

  1123. He knows their hearts.

1124. He knows what they cherish.

1125. He knows what means the most.

1126. He can take anything away at the snap of a finger.

1127. He can put more on them

1128. than they would ever be able to handle.

  1129. And worst of all,

1130. He can send them to eternal damnation

  1131. and eternal destruction

1132. and punish them for all eternity.

1133. What you can do then will last a moment.

1134. But what God can do to them will last forever.

1135. God can do so much more than you can.

1136. But our job is to not be conquered by evil.

1137. Somebody does evil to you

1138. and you do evil, evil wins.

  1139. Satan wins.

1140. Our job is to make sure that God wins.

1141. So we conquer evil by doing good.

1142. Your job in God's sheepfold,

1143. as Him being your shepherd and you being a sheep,

1144. you being adopted into His family,

1145. you are called to do good.

1146. You are called to love other people.

1147. If they're hungry, feed them.

1148. If they're thirsty, give them drink.

1149. What does that sound like?

1150. Exactly what we've talked about the past two weeks.

  1151. God is our shepherd.

  1152. He feeds us.

1153. He gives us, leads us beside peaceful streams.

1154. So there's some aspects of shepherding other people

1155. that God gives you the privilege

1156. and the calling on your life to do.

  1157. To feed into water,

1158. even people who don't deserve it.

1159. You're called to be a shepherd to guide people to Christ.

1160. Now, you don't have the full authority of a shepherd

1161. because you're not given the authority

1162. to protect and take revenge on people.

  1163. That's God's job.

1164. And you have to trust for God to do it for others.

1165. You have to trust for God to do it to you.

1166. And every parent in this room,

1167. at some point in time throughout your child's childhood,

1168. you're going to have to entrust them into God's hands.

1169. And then one day when they reach an adult

1170. and they move out of your sphere of influence

1171. and they become their own adults living their own lives,

1172. you have to fully entrust them back to God's care

1173. and protection in that moment, which is extremely difficult.

1174. But that's what we're called to do.

1175. God is the ultimate protector.

1176. The question is, do we trust Him?

1177. Every single person here has to decide,

1178. do I really trust God to do what He says He's going to do?

1179. Do I really believe that He will take care of everything

1180. just like His Scripture says that He will do?

1181. In Micah 5, verse 4, it says,

    Micah 5:4

1182. And He will stand to lead His flock with the Lord's strength,

1183. in the majesty of the name of the Lord his God.

1184. Then His people will live there undisturbed,

1185. for He will be highly honored around the world.

1186. Christ wants to guard us, protect us,

1187. rescue us, and redeem us in this life.

1188. And we have to understand that as we're walking through this life

1189. and we're trusting in God to do that,

1190. that eventually the journey of our life

1191. is leading us to the eternal place of rest

1192. that He has for us, that He's prepared for us.

1193. But we have to make that journey with Him.

1194. And it is dangerous along the way.

1195. There's going to be predators.

1196. There's going to be people who wrong you.

1197. There's going to be situations and circumstances in life

1198. that you have no control over,

1199. that you are absolutely going to need your God to protect you.

1200. And it will always be a temptation to pull back and want to do it yourself.

1201. The question always comes back to,

1202. do I really trust and believe that He's going to do

1203. what He's always said He's going to do?

  1204. Let's pray.

1205. Father God, thank You again for this day.

1206. Thank You for the opportunity to be here.

1207. Thank You for Your love and mercy.

1208. And Lord, at the same time,

1209. we thank You for being a God who is jealous of us.

1210. Lord, I can't imagine what it would be like

1211. to love my wife and not be jealous of her,

1212. to not want her, to not want to share her with anybody else,

1213. and to think that You look at us with that same jealousy that You love us

1214. and You don't want to share us.

1215. And You're full of vengeance and rage,

1216. and there is a capacity that exists within You

1217. to perfectly execute anger and revenge

1218. in a way that we could never fathom or imagine.

1219. And Lord, that's a good quality, because we want justice to be served.

1220. If we love You and we want the right thing to be done,

1221. justice has to be served.

1222. In one of the passages we read, it said,

1223. you will feed them justice.

1224. So God, thank You for being a God like that.

1225. Help us to trust You and believe in You

1226. and rely on You to do Your job.

1227. And Jesus, help us and strengthen us to do ours.

1228. It's extremely difficult to love and care for people who have wronged us.

1229. But help us to be faithful in that,

1230. knowing that if they don't repent and they don't turn,

1231. You'll take care of everything,

1232. not only in this life but in the one to come as well.

1233. Lord, thank You for who You are and what only You can do.

1234. We love You and ask all this in Jesus' name. Amen.
