  1. We are living at the end of time.

  2. And if ever there was a time for us to

  3. be in our Bibles, understanding the books of Daniel and Revelation,

  4. it is right now. The three angels' messages, the third angel,

  5. I believe, in a very short period of time, it

  6. could be two years or five or even less, I

  7. believe the mark of the beast issue will be hitting

  8. this country I'm not a prophet, but prophetic time, we're

  9. right before it. We live in Revelation 13, 11, and

  10. Daniel 11, 40.

  11. And it's the very next event.

  12. So let's focus in, and let's allow the Bible to

  13. do its work in our lives so we can be

  14. ready for Christ's coming.

  15. Let's pray.

  16. Father, as we open the Word of God today, we

  17. need focus. We need obedience. We need faith. We need

  18. the Holy Spirit. We cannot do this of our own.

  19. So give us Jesus and His name.

  20. Amen.

  21. Now before I proceed in the message today, we have

  22. two ministers from another denomination here present.

  23. Would you stand? And Pastor Stoyan, help me know their

  24. names again.

  25. Say them loudly. My hearing's bad. It's not your fault.

  26. I still can't hear. You'll have to. Dennis and Mario.

  27. Dennis and Mario, we are very grateful you visited us today.

  28. We hope you come and visit us much more.

  29. We are going to get into the Bible, okay? And

  30. let's pray. All right.

  31. The title of the message today is Let Those Men Go.

  32. We live in a time when people live chained by sin.

  33. Our freedom in Christ was not cheap.

  34. It was bought by the blood of the Son of God.

  35. And God has brought us to a knowledge of the

  36. So we can be set free to live for the Lord.

  37. So the title is, Let Those Men Go. Both Peter

  38. and Paul knew that Jesus died on the cross to

  39. set us all free. I don't know about you, but

  40. that deserves an amen because it's truth. We are not

  41. to be chained Christians.

  42. We're not to be Christians that.

  43. Go around life figuring out that we somehow have to

  44. do what this person says or that person says, and

  45. we have no freedom. In Christ, we are free to

  46. live for God a life of integrity and obedience because

  47. the Holy Spirit has taken the chains away. It's not

  48. the kind of freedom the world offers, the kind of

  49. out-of-control freedom that goes for the quick fixes of Hollywood,

  50. that goes for the media entertainment notion of what it

  51. means to be free. or for the free sexual lifestyle

  52. in our secular culture. God calls us to obedience that

  53. is not slavery, but is.

  54. Freedom in Christ.

  55. Freedom that takes the reins of an out-of-control life, a

  56. freedom that boldly lives for God because the soul has

  57. been set free. Hope is the thing with wings that

  58. makes the soul to fly. And for freedom, Paul says,

  59. Christ has set us free. Now both Paul and Peter

  60. provide the two great texts for freedom that are found

  61. in our New Testament. Take your Bibles, turn to Galatians

    Galatians 5:1

  62. 5 verse 1, and here we have the Apostle Paul.

  63. For freedom, Christ has set us free. What's the purpose

  64. of setting us free? Freedom. God wants us to be free.

  65. He doesn't want us to have.

  66. A religious experience that's legalistic, but He also doesn't want

  67. us to have a religious experience that is libertine and

  68. does whatever it wants to, neither are freedom. For freedom

  69. Christ has set us free. Stand fast, therefore, and do

  70. not submit again to a yoke of slavery. Now, Peter

  71. has the other great New Testament text on freedom. 1

    1 Peter 2:16

  72. Peter 2, verse 16. Live as free men. This could

  73. be translated, live as free people. Yet without using your

  74. freedom as a pretext for evil, but live as servants

  75. of God. Now there are two extremes that exist in

  76. the Christian church. The Pharisee extreme and the Sadducee extreme.

  77. The Pharisee extreme is to the right. The Sadducee extreme.

  78. Is to the left.

  79. Both will take you to the wrong side of things

  80. and your soul will be lost if you go into

  81. either philosophy. The left says it really doesn't matter. All

  82. that matters is love, love, love. If we have enough love,

  83. we'll be good people. And by the way, I'll go

  84. do this. I'll break the Sabbath. I'll You watch that

  85. awful thing and live like the devil. But the Lord

  86. understands that's the left. The right is different. The right says, well,

  87. if you don't have a perfect track record, God can't

  88. accept you. So you never have joy and freedom. That's legalism.

  89. When you feel like you have to earn your way

  90. to heaven. Friends, when we walk in the Holy Spirit,

  91. we're not trying hard. We're focusing on Jesus and obedience

  92. is the fruit of a life in love with God.

  93. A life that focuses on the cross of Christ. A

  94. life that is surrendered is a free life. And so

  95. Peter and Paul both agree. Live as free men, yet

  96. without using your freedom as a pretext for evil, but

  97. live as servants of God. Living for God and losing

  98. self is true freedom. Serving yourself without God is pure slavery.

  99. The Philippian jailer had lived his hard life of jail

  100. service to Rome. His job was to keep people inside

  101. the jail. There are pastors and teachers today, theologians, philosopher kings,

  102. who work in the field of religion, who do exactly

  103. what the Philippian jailer did. They spend their entire life

  104. keeping people in jail religiously. I've seen pastors... who keep

  105. seekers for truth in jail by refusing to share the

  106. loving and powerful gospel of Jesus Christ that can set

  107. them free from personal guilt. Dear heart, if you are

  108. serving God because you are afraid of God, you are

  109. not serving God.

  110. Did you hear me?

  111. We have been told in the spirit of prophecy that

  112. the person who serves God out of that kind of

  113. motive has the character of a rebel. God does not

  114. want fear to be the basis of our love for him.

  115. He wants us to come to him because he died

  116. for us.

  117. He loves us. He is morally a humble, good being.

  118. And when we respond to God as truth, our lives

  119. are motivated by truth and love. And thus we have

  120. the law of God in our hearts. The very center

  121. of the book of Hebrews is Hebrews 8 verse 11.

    Hebrews 8:11

  122. The chiastic sinner. And the very central phrase of the

  123. entire epistle is.

  124. They shall all know me.

  125. We know God when we see the truth in the

  126. eyes of Jesus. And thus we are drawn to God.

  127. Before the cross, we all lived for the wrong reasons,

  128. like fear. We all lived thinking that maybe God was

  129. out to get us. The law had its wrong impact

  130. until we saw the lawgiver hanging on Calvary's cross again.

  131. And when we see the lawgiver on the cross, the

  132. law has a different character. When Jesus died on the

  133. cross for our sins, it meant that God the Father,

  134. God the Son, God the Holy Spirit loved us more

  135. than our disobedience. He was not willing to let that

  136. stand between us. He took the weight into himself so

  137. that we could come to God. Ellen White, Manuscript 101, 1897.

  138. Theology doesn't get much better than this statement I'm getting

  139. ready to read to you, which is not on the screen.

  140. I forgot to make a slide of it, so I'll

  141. read it to you. Manuscript 101, 1897. The emancipation papers

  142. of our race were signed by the blood of the

  143. Son of God. How do you like that? The emancipation

  144. papers of our race... were signed by the blood of

  145. the Son of God, and a way was opened for

  146. the message of hope and mercy to be carried to

  147. the ends of the earth. Now whoever will may reach

  148. forth and take hold of God's hand and make peace

  149. with him, and they shall make peace. The heathen are

  150. no longer to be wrapped in midnight superstition. The gloom

  151. is to disappear for the bright beams of the sun

  152. of righteousness. When Jesus hung on the cross, his hand

  153. reached to the, to the entire west, the east, and

  154. around the world. And he signed the eternal covenant, the

  155. emancipation papers of the human race with his blood, so

  156. that in Christ we are free. In Acts 16.27, when

  157. God sent the earthquake that shook up the jailer, when

  158. Paul and Silas were singing hymns and fetters, the earthquake

  159. didn't kill anyone that night. The earthquake set them all free.

  160. The Greek text says literally all their fetters were loosened. Now, friend,

  161. when God allows an earthquake to come into your life,

  162. God is not trying to kill you with that earthquake.

  163. God is trying to shake you up so the fetters

  164. that have kept you bound in life fall off and

  165. you are set free. For freedom Christ has set us free.

  166. When the jailer realized that no one ran away that night,

  167. he asked Paul and Silas, men, as it is in

  168. my translation, what must I do to be saved? And

  169. I asked that question years ago when I was walking

  170. home from a school, my high school there in Galax, Virginia.

  171. And my life had come to its end at the

  172. age of 15. I had childhood depression. my family system

  173. was awful, my mother struggling with mental illness, my stepfather abusive,

  174. and I just wanted to get out of town. And

  175. I remember coming to a bridge, staying over the bridge,

  176. looking down, and right around 3 o'clock in the And

  177. all the muck from the furniture factory started coming down

  178. the creek. And as I was looking at my reflection

  179. down there, I realized that suddenly it looked awful. Have

  180. you ever had a time when you looked in the

  181. mirror and you didn't like what you were seeing?

  182. You ever had that time?

  183. I was looking in the mirror in a stream and

  184. suddenly it was garbage. And I remember just saying, if

  185. there's a God up there, save me. I knew nothing

  186. of theology. I knew nothing of the Bible. but I

  187. knew I needed help in my life, that I couldn't

  188. fix the mess of my life. And God took that prayer,

  189. and in a short period of time, within a few months,

  190. He had led me to my biological father who had

  191. accepted Christ, who I learned was praying for me right

  192. at that time of my life in Loma Linda, California,

  193. after he was newly converted. I had known my father

  194. since I was a child, didn't know if he was

  195. alive on earth, and God had put my life back

  196. together again. Because I prayed the simple prayer, oh God,

  197. if there's a God, save me. Friend, God is in

  198. the saving business. God is not out to let an

  199. earthquake in your life destroy you. God is in the

  200. business of making sure you can make it if you

  201. come to Jesus Christ. And so when the earth shook,

  202. their fetters fell off that day.

  203. I've got to find my spot here. Just give me

  204. a second.

  205. When the jailer realized that no one ran away that night,

  206. he asked Paul and Silas, men, what must I do

  207. to be saved? And they answered back, believe in the

  208. Lord Jesus and you will be saved, you and your household.

  209. That very night, Paul preached the gospel of God to

  210. the whole house.

  211. They all believed. And after they washed Paul.

  212. And Silas from their wounds, because they beat them up

  213. pretty bad, they were baptized into Jesus Christ. Wham, just

  214. like that, baptized into Jesus Christ. The prisoners baptized the jailer.

  215. Now think about that. The jailers here, the prisoners must

  216. have gone down to that stream that they had prayed

  217. at where they found Lydia. And they baptized them. And

  218. then God set this jailer free by those who were

  219. technically in prison. Friends, God didn't force them to be

  220. free that night. They chose Jesus. And who set them free?

  221. Was it Paul or Jesus? It was Jesus.

  222. They didn't blame the preacher or anyone else for their slavery.

  223. They thanked God for Jesus who had set them free

  224. by faith in his blood. And they were baptized. You know,

  225. how can you tell if someone is truly converted?

  226. Have you ever asked the question, oh, they're religious. It's

  227. not because they have a Bible and they know a lot.

  228. How can you tell if someone is truly converted? Friends,

  229. you can tell by their attitude. If they are free.

  230. If they genuinely love people. If they're not manipulative. if

  231. they're serving not for what they can get, but what

  232. they can give, that's a converted heart that has been

  233. set free. Acts 16.34, look what happens next. Then he

  234. brought them up into his house and set food before them,

  235. and he rejoiced with all his household that he had

  236. believed in God. I mean, I'd like to have been

  237. there as they were eating that food. I don't know

  238. what they served Paul. Paul maybe had to instruct them,

  239. I can't eat the pork, but I'll eat this. Because

  240. he was true to biblical principles. But they had a feast.

  241. And that wonderful jailer said, praise God. That me and

  242. my family, we now believe in God. The jailer discovered

  243. that night that Jesus had signed the emancipation papers of

  244. the human race that had set him free. The Greeks

  245. and the Romans were superstitious concerning earthquakes. When an earthquake hit,

  246. they thought something would cause the earthquake. No earthquakes until

  247. Paul and Silas came to town. And suddenly you have

  248. a big earthquake. Got their attention. Acts 16.35. But when

  249. it was day, the magistrate sent the police saying, let

  250. those men go.

  251. Now there's a lot here. I want to unpack it.

  252. The Greek word used here for magistrate was often used

  253. to describe a military leader. In the context, these nervous

  254. military leaders from this garrison city, this city, military city

  255. of Philippi, sent the police with the message for the jailer.

  256. The Greek word translated police literally means one who holds

  257. the rod, a big stick. Have you ever seen someone

  258. with a big stick in their hand and they were threatening?

  259. Have you ever seen that?

  260. Has anyone ever been threatened by someone with a stick?

  261. Now I had an experience once where I needed a

  262. big stick. I was in Rome, Italy.

  263. Diana's dad had put me up in a hotel for

  264. a couple of weeks and And I got a chance

  265. to see all the great historical sites of Rome, to

  266. go to Torre Polici, to see the Waldensians, where they

  267. had taught the Bible up in the northern Alps. But

  268. I was taking pictures like crazy. And I had my camera,

  269. a big camera bag with me, and a tripod.

  270. A monopod, actually, just a single pole.

  271. I was walking along the Tiber, the dirty, smelly Tiber River.

  272. And as I was walking along it, suddenly two thugs

  273. appeared right there on the road.

  274. I said, oh, no.

  275. I've got this expensive camera equipment. It's easy to throw

  276. me in the river. Nobody's around. They're walking toward me.

  277. What do you do? Well, I'll tell you what I did.

  278. I took my monopod. It was a stick. I kind

  279. of rolled it out. I started doing this. Like, come on, guys.

  280. That's what I did. And they turned around and went

  281. the other way. Why? Because I carried a big stick.

  282. And that's the fact.

  283. So the Greek word for police here is literally the

  284. big stick men.

  285. Years ago, I don't.

  286. Recommend this, there was a movie called Walking Tall about

  287. the true historical figure of Buford Pusser. And Buford Pusser

  288. was famous for a big stick. He would carry a

  289. big stick and he would go into the brothels and

  290. he would hit the pimps. He would catch the murderers

  291. and whack them and spank them. And anyone else who

  292. was on the wrong side of The law, of course,

  293. people like watching that on television.

  294. I don't.

  295. He used the big stick. Well, that's the kind of

  296. people that showed up to the jailer. Let those men go,

  297. and they probably had the big stick in their hand.

  298. The jailer was relieved to see Paul and Silas released.

  299. But there was a lesson yet to be learned by

  300. all those who had laid their hands on Paul. When

  301. the jailer first asked Paul, Men, what must I do

  302. to be saved? The jailer said literally in the Greek language, Lords,

  303. not men, but lords, what must I do to be saved?

  304. Now this word kurios for lord is used for gods

  305. at times. We know that Paul and Silas were confused

  306. as deities in their movements.

  307. There in the book of Acts. And so he's looking

  308. up to them.

  309. If they have power over the earthquake and they don't

  310. get killed, maybe they're gods, lords. What must I do

  311. to be saved? Now Paul and Silas is not going

  312. to let it stay there. Paul and Silas said, Believe

  313. in the Lord Jesus. You will be saved, you and

  314. your household.

  315. We're not lords. Jesus is Lord.

  316. The jailer and all those who were led to Christ

  317. that night need to know that Jesus is more than

  318. our Savior.

  319. Now hear this. Jesus is Lord.

  320. If you come to Christ and you've given your life

  321. to Christ, but you will not allow Jesus to be

  322. Lord in your life, Jesus is not enough for you yet.

  323. And so Paul has to make the point You believe

  324. in the Lord Jesus, you'll be saved. Not just Jesus.

  325. Don't go telling Jesus how you're going to live your life.

  326. Don't go tell Jesus what your future will be like.

  327. You give your life to Jesus. You make him Lord.

  328. You will be saved. That's what real faith does. So

  329. they need to know that. That Jesus can deal with

  330. the bullies in life. That Jesus can take the abusive,

  331. big stick kind of people out of the picture. And

  332. that Christ can be the Lord that governs our existence.

  333. The keeper of the prison told Paul that they could

  334. go in peace that day. But Paul was not ready

  335. to go without a reckoning for the injustice they had

  336. suffered at the hands of the mob, the magistrates, the police,

  337. and those in charge. They'd been roughed up, beat. They

  338. were bleeding and wounded. And they were going to make

  339. a statement. Acts 16, verse 37. Here it is. But

    Acts 16:37

  340. Paul said to them, They have beaten us publicly, uncondemned

  341. men who are Roman citizens, and have thrown us into prison.

  342. And do they now cast us out secretly? No, let

  343. them come themselves and take us out. That's pretty bold,

  344. isn't it? Can you imagine? You can go, no, we're

  345. staying in prison. We're not leaving. They beat us up.

  346. They treat us this way. You let them come take

  347. us out of here. Does that sound pretty tough? Of

  348. course it does.

  349. Paul is digging in. Why?

  350. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, darkness cannot drive out darkness,

  351. only light can do that. Paul said, let them come.

  352. Out and take us out.

  353. Now there's a legal context for Paul's refusal to leave here.

  354. I want to share it with you. Under Roman law

  355. in the first century AD, a magistrate or official who

  356. flogged and imprisoned a Roman citizen without a proper trial

  357. committed a serious crime equivalent to treason or capital offense.

  358. Magistrates could be and were put to death for the

  359. abuse of the Porcian and Valerian laws that explicitly forbade binding, scourging,

  360. or beating a Roman citizen since the body of a

  361. Roman citizen was considered legally and religiously sacred. A magistrate

  362. who violated these rights faced heavy fines, public disgrace. It

  363. was called infamia. They became infamous. A loss of office, banishment,

  364. or even capital punishment, execution for an egregious abuse of

  365. power Paul was standing on the right side of the

  366. law as a Roman citizen. The extreme legal jeopardy explains

  367. why the magistrates in Philippi suddenly panicked. Oh my goodness,

  368. what have we done? Look at verse 38, Acts 16.

  369. The police reported these words to the magistrates. And they

  370. were afraid when they heard that they were Roman citizens.

  371. Now I don't know how Paul became a Roman citizen.

  372. I don't know how Silas did. Paul was evidently born

  373. with that citizenship based on the book of Acts, but

  374. I don't know the mechanism how his family was brought

  375. into it.

  376. But look at verse 39.

  377. So they came and apologized to them, and they took

  378. them out and asked them to leave the city. Of course,

  379. they want them out of there because if they press

  380. the law, these guys are in trouble. Paul and Silas

  381. didn't let them rush away quickly at all. He said,

  382. you guys want to get rid of us?

  383. Well, wait a sec.

  384. We're going to take our time. in leaving on our terms.

  385. They took their time, and what did they do? They

  386. encouraged the saints. They made sure that the faith of

  387. those newly baptized believers was secure. They made sure that

  388. they had a sense of the power of God to

  389. protect the church before they left town. The New King

  390. James Version says in verse 40, look at verse 40

  391. with me. So they went out of the prison and

  392. visited Lydia, who had been baptized. And when they had

  393. seen the brethren, they exhorted.

  394. Them, and departed.

  395. And that word exhorted is the Greek word for comfort.

  396. They comforted them. Jesus uses the same word in John 14,

  397. 16 when he speaks of the Holy Spirit as a comforter.

  398. I have found in my personal life struggle. Has anyone

  399. ever struggled in their walk with God? Am I the

  400. only one here today? You pack of Pharisees out there.

  401. I'm just kidding.

  402. We don't want the Pharisee. Have you ever struggled in

  403. your walk with God? Is it okay to just say so?

  404. Yes. Okay.

  405. Now, if you're not struggling, it probably means that you

  406. have a wrong view of yourself. The Bible says, and

  407. to the church of Philadelphia, the book of Revelation, you

  408. have but a little power, but you have not denied

  409. my name. It's when you think, oh, I'm the greatest thing.

  410. I'm the Lord's gift to the church. I'm so talented.

  411. What would the church do without me? The Lord can't

  412. use you. It's in humility and brokenness that we are used.

  413. So I have found in my personal life struggle, I

  414. do have those, that Satan stirs up trouble from everywhere,

  415. including the church at times, when he sees that people

  416. are turning to God and coming to Bible truth. I've

  417. noticed that as a pastor. And I have found that

  418. this kind of trouble in the church... often comes from

  419. unconverted saints who aren't saints because they have never allowed

  420. the Lord to have control of their life. They may

  421. look religious, but it doesn't mean they're converted. Friends, I'm

  422. talking to you now. If you are a church member

  423. and you're not in the soul winning business, you're not

  424. trying to use your life to help people come to

  425. Christ that you've never met or family members that you know.

  426. If you're not concerned about that, If you're not focused

  427. on the good work of God that comforts new believers

  428. who need help when they come young and weak into

  429. the church. The work that shares the word of God

  430. with others, that shares through kindness, acts of mercy. The

  431. work that helps them come into the faith of Jesus.

  432. If you don't care about that, just care about your

  433. church position, how important you look and all that.

  434. Friends, you're not a Christian.

  435. You may look important in the church, but you're not

  436. a Christian. It's not a spiritual gift from the church

  437. to have a bad attitude and to discourage new believers

  438. to make yourself look good. It's not a sign of

  439. spiritual greatness to tear down the work of others with

  440. a smirk on your face or a victim stance because

  441. you don't think something went your way. It is not

  442. befitting of a true believer to sow discord when he

  443. or she can build up the body of Jesus Christ

  444. with a humble, selfless mind that makes a difference for others.

  445. It's not the work of God to turn new believers

  446. against the church, the world church, or any part of

  447. its leadership. Sincere, godly members in the church will work

  448. for the salvation of men, women, and children. Here's the

  449. key phrase that I've written in my sermon. With a

  450. good attitude.

  451. Did you hear that? What is a good attitude? How

  452. can you know that you have a good attitude? Let's practice.

  453. You see that smile there in your face? Now, I

  454. have TMJ in my jaw. Most of you don't know this.

  455. I have a jaw that I can't close at all

  456. on one side, and I chew my food. I got

  457. my wife's chewing gum. I went on a pastoral visit

  458. this week, and I could only use one side to

  459. chew the gum. So I have a hard time smiling,

  460. but I love to smile. So let's practice. And my

  461. jaw with my TMJ jaw makes it harder for me.

  462. But we can tell because when we smile, it means

  463. we love people, and we don't fake it. So why

  464. don't you practice one with me, would you? The brother Christopher,

  465. when you smile, it works. Anybody else want to smile

  466. is going up. God wants to see smiling, happy Christians

  467. in their action with others.

  468. It makes a difference.

  469. Many a devil has masqueraded as a saint as he

  470. or she has worked behind the back of God's servants

  471. to bring suffering and misery into the church. May we

  472. never be that way. If you're keeping company with believers

  473. who act that way, don't. The Bible says that People

  474. have a form of religion, but they deny the power

  475. of it.

  476. We'd have nothing to do with them.

  477. So get yourself away from that kind of bad company. I,

  478. for one, believe that God raised up this church, our

  479. little church here, and the world church to be a

  480. light and a lamp for Jesus Christ. If I didn't

  481. believe that, I wouldn't be preaching. Friends, God has comforted

  482. us over the years. I want to ask you to

  483. do something with me. Have you ever had a time

  484. where you really were so depressed? Have you ever had

  485. a time where you're so depressed that you felt like

  486. giving up on God and really calling it quits?

  487. Has that ever happened to you? No?

  488. I'm gonna raise my hands. Happened to me. And when

  489. that time comes, that is a very important time in

  490. your life when you gotta make a decision. Why am

  491. I serving God? Is it for what I can get

  492. out of it? Is it so I'll feel good, so

  493. I'll be blessed? Or am I serving God because of

  494. God And for me, it's a wake-up time where I

  495. have to dig down and say, am I asking God

  496. to give me all these things so I'll be happy?

  497. And that's why I'm serving God or I'm willing to

  498. serve God if I don't have anything. And so it's

  499. a very important time to take notice. And in those times,

  500. I have noticed that what I need more than anything

  501. else is encouragement and comfort. Have you ever had someone

  502. come into your life at that very time and they

  503. encouraged you, they prayed for you, They said, you're down,

  504. but don't worry, you're going to make it. You ever

  505. had that happen? Man, we got to help people do that.

  506. Maybe we should get someone at the door and say,

  507. be encouraged, brothers, you walk in.

  508. But it makes a difference.

  509. But I've had someone during one circumstance who actually told me,

  510. you know, you might as well just forget it and

  511. give up. I remember that. And it was when I

  512. was a young person. I was doing a special music, actually,

  513. on my guitar. and singing, and I didn't do it for.

  514. Years after that. I was demoralized by it.

  515. So we should be in the encouraging business, not the

  516. discouraging business. So the key word is comfort. Now, I'd

  517. like to put a couple of verses that we'll end

  518. with on the screen here. Isaiah 40, verse 1. Notice

    Isaiah 40:1

  519. this verse. God says, comfort, comfort my people, says your God.

  520. How many times does he say it in the verse?

  521. Two. Go to the next verse.

  522. Speak tenderly to Jerusalem and cry to her that her

  523. warfare has ended, that her iniquity is what? So when

  524. God speaks tenderly to you and you're broken, what does

  525. he say according to that verse? That her iniquity is what?

  526. My hearing is not the greatest.

  527. Pardoned.

  528. Not guilty anymore. Forgiven people. That she has received from

  529. the Lord's hand. Uh oh.

  530. How much did she receive from the Lord's hand here?

  531. Double for all her sins. Now how is that fair?

  532. God to pay us back double for our sins? Go

  533. back to the first verse. How many times does God

  534. say comfort?

  535. Twice.

  536. How does he pay us back for our sins?

  537. Double. What does he pay us back with? Here it is. Comfort. Comfort.

  538. Listen, if you're broken, if your life is falling apart,

  539. you've let God down, he's going to pay you back

  540. for that all right. He's going to forgive you your sins,

  541. and he is going to comfort you, and he's going

  542. to comfort you a second round so that you know

  543. that he loves you.

  544. And that he is.

  545. Not in the business of trying to demoralize you. The

  546. Bible says a dimly burning wick Jesus would not put

  547. out and he would not break a bruised reed.

  548. God is in the comfort business. Next verse.

  549. The book of Micah ends with comfort. Now the Hebrew

  550. word for comfort is Nahum.

  551. Nahum. We have a whole book of the Bible.

  552. Written about it. Who is a God like thee? Pardoning iniquity.

  553. Passing over transgression for the remnant of his inheritance. He

  554. does not retain his anger forever because he delights in

  555. steadfast love. Next verse, 19. He will again have compassion

  556. upon us. He will tread our iniquities underfoot. Thou will

  557. cast how many of our sins into the depths of

  558. the sea?

  559. What does the text say? I need to hear it

  560. from you. How many?

  561. All our sins into the depths of the sea. Verse 20.

  562. Thou will show faithfulness to Jacob and steadfast love to Abraham.

  563. as thou hast shown to our father from days of old.

  564. And then the next verse. Now let's go back a

  565. little bit. I want to draw something out. Verse 19.

  566. You see where it says he will again have compassion?

  567. You see that in the text? That is the Hebrew

  568. word Nahum. He will again have comfort upon us. Now

  569. this book ends, the book of Micah, and the next

  570. book that follows... was part of the arrangement of the

  571. Protestant canon after the Reformation. But God knew the future

  572. because he knew what the name of the very next book,

  573. because he will again have comfort, Nahum, Nahum for his people.

  574. Go to the very next verse after, there it is.

  575. And it starts by saying an oracle or the burden

  576. of Nahum or the burden of comfort, of compassion. The

  577. very next book is comfort. Comfort my people. Friends, we

  578. are living at the end of time. If we are

  579. left to ourselves, we will be lost because we're not

  580. strong enough to make it. We're not good enough to

  581. make it. We're not perfect enough to make it. But

  582. guess who is? Jesus is. And he has a right

  583. now righteousness good enough for the judgment day, good enough

  584. for every day of your life, and you can be

  585. in Christ.

  586. And when you are in.

  587. Christ, he will comfort, encourage you, strengthen you, and prepare

  588. you for the coming of the Lord. And then we

  589. see that in the story when Paul left Philippi. Paul

  590. left those new baby believers in the full comfort of

  591. the Holy Spirit. The magistrates told the jailer, let those

  592. men go. With dignity, Paul and Silas took their time

  593. to comfort Lydia, to comfort the saints of God, to

  594. comfort those who had been baptized, to encourage them. And

  595. then they left the city of Philippi happy, glowing, full

  596. of new believers. And they took the road to another

  597. place in need of Jesus, in need of the comfort

  598. of the gospel of God.

  599. Let's pray.

  600. Father, as we bow our heads today, I want to

  601. say to you, I need the comfort of God in

  602. my life. If there's someone here who says, I have

  603. been banged up and our eyes are closed, I need

  604. God's comfort in my life. And I believe that God

  605. is that kind of God. He does forgive me. Raise

  606. your hand to God.

  607. Say, I need that. Just raise it right now. Raise it.

  608. No one's looking but God. Now, Father, you know the

  609. hearts of those who've reached out to you. Grant them

  610. that healing in their life. Not because of the preacher.

  611. Not because of anyone but Jesus. And grant us the

  612. power of the word of God to live for you

  613. and love you.

  614. And to be free in Jesus' name. Amen.

  615. Dear Heavenly Father, we're all born on the wrong side

  616. of Eden's door. We can't claw our way back to you.

  617. Thank you for Jesus who came through the door. Thank

  618. you for your heart of love that found a way

  619. to pardon our sins and to give us the Holy

  620. Spirit to become sinless beings one day. We are grateful

  621. you love us in the journey to get there. So Father, comfort,

  622. comfort your people. Hold them this week. In Jesus' name.

  623. In Jesus' name. Amen.
