  1. Now, we're going to turn to the book of Genesis, one last time in the life of Abraham, Genesis chapter 22, which is on page 22.

    Genesis 22 chapter mention

  2. And so we're going to read the first 19 verses, and then we're going to flick over, and I'm just going to read three verses from Hebrews chapter 11, and then we'll come back to Genesis 22 and think about it together.

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  3. So let's hear God's word together.

  4. Sometime later, God tested Abraham.

  5. He said to him, Abraham, here I am, he replied.

  6. Then God said,

  7. Stay here with the donkey while I and the boy go over there.

  8. We will worship, and then we will come back to you.

  9. Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and placed it on his son Isaac, and he himself carried the fire and the knife.

  10. As the two of them went on together, Isaac spoke up and said to his father Abraham,

  11. Father, yes, my son, Abraham replied.

  12. The fire and wood are here, Isaac said, but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?

  13. Abraham answered, God himself will provide the burnt offering, my son.

  14. And the two of them went on together.

  15. When they reached the place God had told him about, Abraham built an altar there and arranged the wood on it.

  16. He bound his son Isaac and laid him on the altar on top of the wood.

  17. Then he reached out his hand and took the knife to slay his son.

  18. But the angel of the Lord called out to him from heaven, Abraham, Abraham.

  19. Here I am, he replied.

  20. Do not lay a hand on the boy, he said.

  21. Do not do anything to him.

  22. Now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son.

  23. Abraham looked up and there in a thicket he saw a ram caught by its horns.

  24. He went over and took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt offering instead of his son.

  25. So Abraham called that place, the Lord will provide.

  26. And to this day it is said, on the mountain of the Lord it will be provided.

  27. The angel of the Lord called to Abraham from heaven a second time and said,

  28. I swear by myself, declares the Lord, that because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son,

  29. I will surely bless you and make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as the sand on the seashore.

  30. Your descendants will take possession of the cities of their enemies,

  31. and through your offspring all nations on earth will be blessed, because you have obeyed me.

  32. Then Abraham returned to his servants, and they set off together for Beersheba, and Abraham stayed in Beersheba.

  33. And then we can turn over to Hebrews 11.

  34. It's on page 1210.

  35. I'll read these three verses here from verse 17, as the author of the Hebrews reflects on this story.

  36. By faith, Abraham, when God tested him, offered Isaac as a sacrifice.

  37. He who had embraced the promises was about to sacrifice his one and only son,

  38. even though God had said to him, it is through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned.

  39. Abraham reasoned that God could even raise the dead,

  40. and so in a manner of speaking, he did receive Isaac back from the dead.

  41. Amen.

  42. So we're going to be in Genesis 22,

  43. and I wonder what you make of this story.

  44. Thomas Jefferson was one of the early presidents of the United States when he was reading his Bible.

  45. When he came to a part of the Bible that he didn't really like the sound of,

  46. he would take a pair of scissors, and he would remove the passage that didn't fit.

  47. You and I, we might not do it literally, but in our thinking, we might want to take scissors to this story.

  48. Philosophers and thinkers have struggled with it over the years.

  49. Soren Kierkegaard, the Danish Christian philosopher,

  50. wrote a really interesting book called Fear and Trembling,

  51. and he really wrestles with what's going on here.

  52. Maybe a more popular philosopher, poet, Bob Dylan,

  53. Highway 61 revisited.

  54. He begins the song by talking about this story.

  55. If you remember, oh, God said to Abraham, kill me a son.

  56. Abe says, man, you must be putting me on.

  57. God says, no.

  58. Abe says, what?

  59. And that what might be where you and I are right now.

  60. Here is God speaking, and it sounds like he's calling for child sacrifice.

  61. And this is in God's holy book.

  62. If you've been here for the last few weeks,

  63. we've been saying in so many ways, God is personal, and God is good,

  64. and God keeps his promises, and God loves people,

  65. and God establishes relationship with people.

  66. What do we make of this story?

  67. Let me plead with you at the beginning

  68. to stick with me,

  69. to think through this with me,

  70. because genuinely, my hope and my prayer is that this could become

  71. one of your favorite chapters in the whole Bible.

  72. that this story has the capacity to change your whole life.

  73. To understand that, we need to maybe ask another big question,

  74. the big question of what is the Bible,

  75. and what story is the Bible telling?

  76. Maybe for many people, it's really easy to approach the Bible

  77. and think, well, it's a moral handbook.

  78. Maybe you've heard it spoken of as the maker's instruction manual.

  79. Well, if we take that approach to this chapter,

  80. we won't get the story at all.

  81. What's the moral of this tale?

  82. Should we go and do likewise?

  83. No, is the obvious answer.

  84. But if we read a chapter like this without knowing

  85. the bigger story,

  86. who the Bible is about,

  87. what story it's telling,

  88. we will come to certain sections

  89. and become really, really confused.

  90. It is vital with any story

  91. to understand

  92. what genre, what kind of story is this?

  93. And that informs how we should read it.

  94. And we need to know the whole story

  95. if we are to make sense of it.

  96. I really like Whodunit,

  97. Agatha Christie, I really enjoy.

  98. The ABC Murders,

  99. I borrowed it from the library

  100. and got as far as the last chapter

  101. before I had to return it.

  102. I got it on audiobook thinking,

  103. I know what I'll do.

  104. I'll catch up.

  105. I got as far as the second last chapter

  106. and I ran out of listening time.

  107. A Whodunit,

  108. where you don't know Whodunit,

  109. is pointless.

  110. You're left with no clue.

  111. There is no resolution to the tension.

  112. You need the end.

  113. You need to know the point

  114. that the whole story is driving towards.

  115. We need to be able to hear the story

  116. in the right way.

  117. Maybe you have heard the story

  118. of what happened when H.G. Wells' novel,

  119. The War of the Worlds,

  120. was first made into a radio serial.

  121. And the opening of that BBC radio production

  122. had a news report.

  123. Breaking news!

  124. Aliens have invaded the world!

  125. And people thought it was really happening.

  126. There were people panicking

  127. because they genuinely thought,

  128. we are being told that aliens have landed.

  129. If you hear the story in the wrong way,

  130. you draw the wrong conclusion.

  131. And the same is absolutely true

  132. when we come to a chapter like Genesis 22.

  133. What we need to do

  134. is first of all to let ourselves be guided

  135. by the first people who heard the story.

  136. So the first people that heard the story,

  137. it was the Israelites in the wilderness.

  138. They'd just been set free.

  139. God has acted to deliver them.

  140. And do you know what?

  141. They celebrated this story,

  142. and that should tell us something.

  143. They understood.

  144. This isn't a story about child sacrifice.

  145. This is actually a story that's telling us

  146. about God's love and mercy.

  147. They would be able to hear the story and say,

  148. I owe my entire existence

  149. to God keeping His promises

  150. through this promised child.

  151. With Genesis chapter 22,

    Genesis 22 chapter mention

  152. we are given a window into

  153. God's redeeming love.

  154. But only if we allow ourselves to see

  155. and to understand the whole story

  156. and to get to the end point of the story

  157. as it points us towards

  158. God's provision,

  159. God's grace,

  160. God keeping His promises,

  161. and that for us will take us all the way

  162. to the death and resurrection of the Lord Jesus.

  163. Because when we think about what is the Bible

  164. and how we should read it,

  165. the whole book in its entirety,

  166. in a sense,

  167. is God's biography.

  168. God is wanting to tell us something about Himself.

  169. And especially to tell us about His story of redemption.

  170. And so to think about the Holy Spirit.

  171. The Holy Spirit is inspiring people,

  172. inspired people,

  173. so that they would give testimony

  174. to the truth of Jesus,

  175. the Son of God,

  176. and His work of salvation.

  177. And you know,

  178. that's how Jesus read the Bible.

  179. Jesus would say to people in His day,

  180. all the scriptures,

  181. all the Old Testament,

  182. they testify about me.

  183. The first Easter Sunday,

  184. when He met some disciples

  185. that were confused and sad on the road,

  186. He said,

  187. how come you don't understand

  188. that I had to die and then rise again?

  189. And then He led them

  190. on an Old Testament Bible study,

  191. in which Jesus was the hero,

  192. the climax,

  193. the point of God's whole story.

  194. And so we come to Genesis 22,

  195. or any section of the Bible,

  196. we need to read it in the right way.

  197. Understanding this is telling us of God's work,

  198. and it's pointing us towards Jesus,

  199. the Savior.

  200. So I want us to be able to come away from this chapter

  201. able to praise God.

  202. Yes, there's a really difficult test,

  203. but there's also a wonderful God behind it

  204. that is a God of saving grace and mercy.

  205. And the way that we'll get there

  206. is if we're able to put away the scissors,

  207. and instead if we pull out our magnifying glasses,

  208. if we take a look at this text,

  209. and if we read it in light of where the story is heading,

  210. if we read it in light of Jesus.

  211. So we're going to walk through the story

  212. and then think about some of the lessons

  213. that it teaches us.

  214. So we begin in the first couple of verses

  215. with the test of faith.

  216. So if you've been here for the last month,

  217. we've been following Abraham's story now

  218. for 25 years.

  219. Over 25 years, actually.

  220. And we've seen these two themes

  221. intertwine at every point.

  222. Abraham is a man who lives by faith,

  223. and God is a God who is faithful to his promises,

  224. that he enters into a relationship

  225. and he's made a wonderful promise to Abraham.

  226. And that involved a son.

  227. When we pick up the story in Genesis 22,

  228. Abraham is now 100 years old.

  229. After 25 years of waiting,

  230. Abraham finally has his promised child.

  231. This one who would bring blessing to the nations.

  232. This one who would be the hope for the world.

  233. And then we come to verse 1.

  234. And sometime later, God tested Abraham.

  235. Take your son,

  236. your only son,

  237. whom you love,

  238. Isaac,

  239. and go to the region of Moriah

  240. and sacrifice him there.

  241. Do we feel the shock of what's going on?

  242. This chapter becomes the climax

  243. of Abraham's life of faith.

  244. Will he be obedient to God

  245. in this hardest of tests?

  246. We recognize that this is a really intense test of faith here,

  247. how it zooms in.

  248. Your only son,

  249. that son whom you love,

  250. it's Isaac.

  251. And it's an extreme test.

  252. Abraham's not the one who's going to suffer,

  253. it's going to be Isaac.

  254. And it's sacrifice,

  255. and it's death.

  256. And remember,

  257. Isaac is not just any old son.

  258. When Isaac was born,

  259. and Abraham held Isaac in his arms,

  260. he was holding the hope of salvation in his arms.

  261. Without Isaac,

  262. the promised child,

  263. there would be no Israel.

  264. And if there's no Israel,

  265. there will be no Jesus.

  266. And if there's no Jesus,

  267. there's no salvation.

  268. And if there's no salvation,

  269. there is no hope.

  270. God knows this.

  271. Abraham knows some of this.

  272. But we get to learn

  273. that God has a plan.

  274. And God's plan for saving the world

  275. will involve the sacrifice of a beloved son.

  276. And the place of death

  277. will be a mountaintop.

  278. This region of Moriah that's mentioned,

  279. by the time of 2 Chronicles 3,

  280. we discover this is going to be the site

  281. for Solomon's temple.

  282. This is going to be where Israel has to come

  283. to offer sacrifices to deal with their sin.

  284. And then we fast forward further centuries,

  285. it's in those same mountains

  286. that we found Mount Calvary.

  287. when another beloved son

  288. will go to the place of sacrificial death.

  289. Abraham's faith is tested.

  290. Faith will be tested by God

  291. in order to show his faithfulness

  292. when we come to an end of ourselves.

  293. The next mention of faith being tested,

  294. it's in the book of Exodus,

  295. when the people are in the wilderness

  296. and they're hungry

  297. and they begin grumbling.

  298. And the question there is,

  299. will they trust the God who rescued them

  300. to provide for them?

  301. Or will they look back to slavery in Egypt

  302. and all the food they could eat?

  303. When our faith is tested,

  304. and it will be tested as Christians,

  305. can we look beyond our circumstances?

  306. Can we raise our eyes?

  307. Can we appreciate God's faithfulness to us

  308. in giving us Jesus

  309. in his perfect life,

  310. in his death,

  311. and in his resurrection?

  312. Well, as the story continues

  313. in verses 3 to 10,

  314. we see the journey of faith.

  315. History records many difficult

  316. and dangerous journeys.

  317. I remember a few years ago now

  318. reading a book called The Long Walk,

  319. which recounted some prisoners

  320. escaping from a Siberian concentration camp

  321. and walking 4,000 miles

  322. to find freedom.

  323. I remember reading Shackleton's account

  324. of the endurance voyage.

  325. You're trying to reach Antarctica.

  326. Incredibly demanding,

  327. difficult, dangerous journeys.

  328. I'd be inclined to put Abraham's journey

  329. on the list of most difficult ones in history

  330. because of the intensity of this test.

  331. But this walk represents

  332. Abraham's long walk of faith.

  333. What can we say about Abraham's faith?

  334. First of all, verse 3,

  335. we see that faith obeys right away.

  336. Early the next morning,

  337. Abraham got up and loaded his donkey,

  338. took his servants and his son Isaac.

  339. He makes the preparation.

  340. This is something we've seen before.

  341. Back in Genesis 12,

  342. well, God has said it.

  343. God has called me.

  344. And I trust God.

  345. I will obey.

  346. End of story.

  347. It's the wonderful pattern of Abraham's life

  348. when we see these high points of faith.

  349. But then recognize,

  350. as well as faith obeying right away,

  351. he obeys day after day.

  352. Because this isn't a short journey.

  353. Verse 4,

  354. Now, can you imagine how painful

  355. and no doubt how prayerful

  356. those three days would have been?

  357. Until they reach the place

  358. where now they can see the mountain

  359. looming in the horizon

  360. and he turns to speak to the servants.

  361. I wonder what we make of what he says to the servants.

  362. So some people read it and say,

  363. well, here is Abraham,

  364. you know, telling a little white lie.

  365. He wants to protect the servants, perhaps.

  366. He certainly wants to protect Isaac.

  367. So he tells a little white lie.

  368. That's not what the Bible says

  369. about Abraham, is it?

  370. That's why we read Hebrews 11.

  371. How does the author of Hebrews understand it?

  372. It understands that Abraham trusts

  373. absolutely in God being faithful

  374. to his promise

  375. that even if his son dies,

  376. he will be raised from the dead.

  377. This is resurrection-shaped faith

  378. that God will keep his promise somehow.

  379. And then we see that faith obeys all the way

  380. from verse six onwards.

  381. Now they're at the mountain.

  382. Abraham takes the wood,

  383. places it on his son Isaac,

  384. and he himself carries the knife.

  385. His own son will be loaded up

  386. with the wood for the sacrifice.

  387. And then we get this poignant conversation

  388. in verses seven and eight.

  389. Father, yes, my son,

  390. the fire and wood are here,

  391. but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?

  392. To which Abraham replies,

  393. God himself will provide the lamb.

  394. God will provide the lamb.

  395. His faith does not waver.

  396. Somehow a substitute will be provided.

  397. Somehow God will act.

  398. A sacrifice will be made

  399. that everything will turn out okay.

  400. He doesn't see how God's going to do it,

  401. but still he believes.

  402. And then we get to the moment of truth.

  403. They're at the mountain.

  404. They're at the mountain top.

  405. Verse nine,

  406. Abraham built an altar

  407. and arranged the wood.

  408. He bound his son Isaac,

  409. and then he reached out his hand

  410. and took the knife to slay his son.

  411. Abraham, in preparing this altar,

  412. is preparing both a place of worship,

  413. but also a place of sacrifice.

  414. And he binds his most likely teenage son

  415. as if he was a sacrificial animal.

  416. And he raises the knife.

  417. And all the while,

  418. Abraham's faith is that Isaac will make it through.

  419. Either he will be spared from death

  420. or he will be raised beyond death

  421. because he knows God cannot fail

  422. to keep his promises.

  423. It's an example of extraordinary faith.

  424. And we need to remember,

  425. this isn't an isolated story.

  426. Abraham and God have a past.

  427. For 25 years and more,

  428. God has been speaking to Abraham personally.

  429. They have relationship.

  430. It was God who acted decisively

  431. to save Abraham

  432. when he was worshiping idols.

  433. It was God who committed himself

  434. to covenant promises

  435. and to keep those promises.

  436. And it was God who worked a miracle

  437. to give Isaac to Abraham and Sarah.

  438. We tell our kids wisely

  439. that it is not safe to trust a stranger.

  440. God is no stranger to Abraham.

  441. And so he clings to God

  442. and to God's promise.

  443. And when our faith is tested,

  444. we recognize that we too have God's word

  445. and we have God's presence

  446. and we have God's promises

  447. and we have an event

  448. that we look back to

  449. that reminds us that God does love us

  450. and he's faithful.

  451. We look to the cross of Jesus

  452. and to the empty tomb.

  453. Well, as Abraham

  454. has bound his son

  455. and he's raised the knife,

  456. this moment is preparing us

  457. for events that will take place

  458. 2,000 years later

  459. of another beloved son

  460. who has carried the wood

  461. up a mountain

  462. for his own sacrifice.

  463. It speaks to us

  464. of a loving father

  465. willing to place his son there

  466. to keep a promise

  467. to save

  468. and to bless

  469. the world.

  470. I don't know if you're familiar

  471. with Glenn Scribner.

  472. He's a Bible teacher

  473. and writer

  474. and podcaster

  475. and he's got a YouTube channel.

  476. He has this great story

  477. of sharing

  478. Genesis 22

  479. with a group of teenagers.

  480. And so he's kind of building

  481. to kind of climax

  482. and he's saying to them

  483. something along these lines.

  484. You know,

  485. here is Isaac,

  486. the only beloved son,

  487. the hope of the world,

  488. the source of all blessing

  489. and he's trudging up the hill

  490. with wood on his back.

  491. Does that remind you of anything?

  492. He says it was on a hill

  493. near Jerusalem.

  494. Does that ring any bells?

  495. And he says he can vividly remember

  496. seeing in that group of teenagers

  497. one friend thumping the girl next to her

  498. because she couldn't contain herself.

  499. She was like,

  500. it's Jesus.

  501. It's totally Jesus.

  502. That's how we read the Bible

  503. and that's how we read this story

  504. because when we understand

  505. why the Bible is written,

  506. that God is giving testimony

  507. to his plan of redemption

  508. through his son,

  509. stories like this one,

  510. they don't need to be barriers to faith.

  511. Rather,

  512. it becomes a bridge to faith

  513. as we see that Abraham represents God the Father,

  514. Isaac represents Jesus,

  515. the Son of God.

  516. That stories like these

  517. can be a boost

  518. to our faith

  519. when we read them in the right way

  520. and understand that this is speaking of God's

  521. steadfast covenant love

  522. and his commitment to keep those promises.

  523. Well, let's come to the climax of our story

  524. where we see the provision

  525. and the promises for faith.

  526. So we've been following Abraham's story of faith.

  527. Over the years, there were ups and downs.

  528. He was fearful in Egypt and told lies.

  529. He questioned,

  530. would God ever send a child?

  531. And so he took matters into his own hands.

  532. But by chapter 22,

  533. we see this mature faith shining through.

  534. But as the knife is poised to fall,

  535. I wonder whether we're asking ourselves,

  536. well, was his faith in God really worth it?

  537. God asked him to do this.

  538. Just pause with me for a moment

  539. and pan forward.

  540. Earlier we read a little section of John 8.

  541. We could go further in John 8

  542. and we would discover this.

  543. Jesus said,

  544. Abraham rejoiced to see my day.

  545. Abraham saw it and was glad.

  546. On that day,

  547. on the Genesis 22 day,

  548. Abraham was given insights

  549. into the saving plan of God

  550. he hadn't had before that moment.

  551. He was given truths

  552. about God's plan of redemption

  553. that he saw in a new way

  554. and he would never forget.

  555. And wonderfully,

  556. because God includes it in the Bible,

  557. we too have front row seats

  558. to God's drama of redemption

  559. so we can learn the lessons too.

  560. So what can we learn?

  561. What can we learn about faith in God?

  562. Why faith is worth it?

  563. How can we say that this story,

  564. which begins in such darkness,

  565. is absolutely wonderful?

  566. Let's draw three lessons together.

  567. First of all,

  568. Abraham discovers

  569. that God will provide the lamb.

  570. So remember back in verse 8,

  571. Isaac asks,

  572. where's the lamb?

  573. God himself will provide the lamb.

  574. But did you notice

  575. which animal was provided?

  576. Look at verse 13.

  577. He saw a ram

  578. caught by its horns.

  579. We're still waiting for the lamb.

  580. And look at verse 14.

  581. Think about the name of this mountain

  582. that Abraham gives it.

  583. So Abraham called that place

  584. the Lord will provide,

  585. future tense.

  586. And to this day,

  587. on the mountain of the Lord,

  588. it will be provided.

  589. So there is this understanding

  590. from Abraham

  591. that there is still a lamb

  592. to be provided in the future.

  593. When is that?

  594. Well, it's in the coming

  595. of the Lord Jesus.

  596. And John the Baptist

  597. sees Jesus

  598. at the beginning of his ministry

  599. and describes him this way.

  600. Here is the lamb of God

  601. who takes away

  602. the sin of the world.

  603. This is Jesus

  604. who is prophesied

  605. later in Isaiah 53,

  606. the one who would be led

  607. like a lamb to the slaughter.

  608. That the Lord God

  609. would lay on Jesus the lamb

  610. the iniquity,

  611. the sin of us all

  612. so that by his wounds

  613. we might be healed.

  614. God provides

  615. the way of atonement,

  616. the way to put right

  617. the relationship

  618. between us and God.

  619. Sacrifice has to do with guilt,

  620. our sin against God

  621. that we cannot deal with.

  622. And the hope that's presented

  623. in Genesis 22

  624. is a day is coming

  625. when God would provide

  626. the lamb.

  627. And that lamb

  628. wouldn't just be an animal,

  629. it would be his own

  630. beloved son.

  631. On that first Good Friday

  632. we see Jesus,

  633. the son of God,

  634. he's carrying a wooden cross

  635. up Mount Calvary

  636. to the place of his sacrifice.

  637. And notice in the story

  638. of Abraham and Isaac,

  639. verse 11,

  640. the angel of the Lord

  641. cries out from heaven,

  642. Abraham, Abraham,

  643. do not lay a hand

  644. on the boy.

  645. This great cease

  646. and desist message

  647. booms from heaven.

  648. Abraham fears God.

  649. He lives with worship

  650. and obedience

  651. and his son is spared.

  652. But on Mount Calvary,

  653. when God's own son Jesus

  654. is nailed to the wood,

  655. to the place of sacrifice,

  656. there is no voice from heaven

  657. to stop the night.

  658. God's judgment

  659. falls on God

  660. in his beloved son

  661. so that we could be forgiven,

  662. so that God's promise

  663. would be kept,

  664. so that we can share

  665. the blessing of life

  666. with God.

  667. Genesis 22

  668. speaks to us

  669. of God's amazing love.

  670. Here's another lesson

  671. that Abraham discovered

  672. on that day.

  673. Relationship

  674. is restored

  675. by sacrifice.

  676. So when Abraham

  677. turns around

  678. and he sees the ram,

  679. he understands

  680. God has provided.

  681. And in providing

  682. that ram

  683. that is sacrificed

  684. instead of Isaac,

  685. a happy reunion

  686. is possible

  687. between Abraham

  688. and Isaac.

  689. The ram dies

  690. and Isaac doesn't.

  691. That same principle

  692. applies to the cross.

  693. Our sin,

  694. our guilt,

  695. our shame,

  696. it separates us

  697. from God,

  698. the life with God

  699. that we were made for.

  700. And the only way

  701. for that to be healed

  702. is if God himself

  703. provides a perfect sacrifice.

  704. And that's what he does

  705. in giving us Jesus.

  706. And when Jesus dies

  707. on the cross,

  708. that shows us

  709. both that God

  710. takes sin seriously,

  711. he does holy justice

  712. against sin,

  713. but at the same time

  714. it shows us

  715. God's loving mercy

  716. towards sinners

  717. because he freely

  718. gives his beloved son

  719. to be our substitute.

  720. And then just as Abraham,

  721. as it were,

  722. Hebrews 11,

  723. receives Isaac back

  724. from the dead,

  725. God the Father,

  726. three days after Calvary,

  727. we have resurrection

  728. and we see that Jesus

  729. is back from the dead.

  730. God receives his son Jesus

  731. to the glory of heaven.

  732. He is risen in victory

  733. on the third day.

  734. And because that's true,

  735. well, you and I,

  736. we can share

  737. in his resurrection life.

  738. Because that's true,

  739. we can enjoy eternal life

  740. with God.

  741. Because that's true,

  742. we can live every day

  743. knowing Jesus

  744. with us

  745. personally.

  746. Relationship

  747. restored

  748. by sacrifice.

  749. And here's a third lesson

  750. that Abraham

  751. would have learned

  752. on that day,

  753. that God's promise

  754. through the promised child,

  755. that promise holds true.

  756. Look at verse 16 to 18

  757. and see the focus

  758. on this son.

  759. I swear by myself,

  760. declares the Lord,

  761. that because you've done this

  762. and have not withheld your son,

  763. your only son,

  764. I will surely bless you.

  765. Verse 18,

  766. and through your offspring,

  767. through your seed,

  768. all nations on earth

  769. will be blessed.

  770. So once more,

  771. God's promise is restated

  772. and the promise focuses

  773. on Isaac,

  774. this beloved son.

  775. And because Abraham

  776. didn't hold him back,

  777. the world could have hope

  778. and be saved.

  779. On Mount Calvary,

  780. God didn't hold his son back.

  781. Jesus,

  782. the beloved son,

  783. the promised seed,

  784. he will die

  785. and then rise.

  786. So that by faith in Jesus,

  787. his great promise of blessing

  788. holds true in your life and mine.

  789. Genesis 22,

  790. in other words,

  791. has always been telling

  792. a bigger story,

  793. a wonderful story

  794. of God's redeeming love,

  795. of a father giving his beloved son

  796. to die to save us.

  797. And it is this God

  798. who says to us,

  799. you can trust me.

  800. And he invites each one of us

  801. to look at Jesus,

  802. the Lamb of God,

  803. who takes away

  804. the sin of the world.

  805. Let's pray together briefly

  806. and then the boys and girls

  807. will join us again.

  808. Our God and Father,

  809. we thank you

  810. that the Bible

  811. is your story,

  812. the story of your commitment

  813. to save a people

  814. for yourself,

  815. to deal with the problem

  816. of sin and guilt,

  817. to bring us

  818. to life with God

  819. through Jesus.

  820. And we thank you

  821. for lessons

  822. that Abraham

  823. was able to learn

  824. about your faithfulness

  825. and your love,

  826. even in this hardest

  827. of times

  828. of testing

  829. of his faith.

  830. Lord,

  831. when our faith

  832. is tested,

  833. help us to look

  834. beyond

  835. the circumstance

  836. to you

  837. as Father,

  838. to Jesus

  839. our Savior,

  840. to see that you

  841. have provided

  842. salvation.

  843. Lord,

  844. may we love

  845. this chapter

  846. because we

  847. see how it points

  848. us

  849. to Jesus

  850. and to the gospel

  851. and to the hope

  852. of life

  853. and blessing

  854. from you.

  855. and Lord,

  856. as we shortly

  857. turn

  858. to the Lord's

  859. Supper,

  860. as we see

  861. in the bread

  862. and the wine

  863. Jesus' commitment

  864. to save a people

  865. for himself,

  866. may you fill our hearts

  867. with a sense

  868. of thankfulness.

  869. We pray it in Jesus' name.

  870. Amen.
