  1. If you take out your message notes, we're in a

  2. series on getting through what you're going through. This last

  3. week was birthday week in the Warren household. We had

  4. three family birthdays. Sunday morning is Amy's birthday, but earlier

  5. in the week we had Cole's birthday and Caleb's birthday.

  6. And so on Cole's birthday we went to a bounce

  7. house and had a whole lot of fun playing in

  8. the bounce house. And on Caleb's birthday we went to

  9. a trampoline club. You can imagine me on a trampoline.

  10. And so I was really getting into this and all

  11. of a sudden Cassidy, Cassie comes up, she's seven years old,

  12. she says, Papa, I have something I want you to

  13. do with me. I said, okay, babe, you know, I'm

  14. up for anything. So she grabs my hand and she

  15. takes me around. to this balance beam jousting contest. So

  16. we put on the headgear. This is like American Gladiator, okay? Now,

  17. it's me versus a seven-year-old. I think this is gonna

  18. be pretty easy, okay? And so we get up on

  19. the balance beam, and it's over this giant pit filled

  20. with real squishy, super soft sponges. So if you fall off,

  21. it's no big deal. And so she's the one in

  22. the bounce beam. She comes at me. She takes one

  23. swack and I'm off.

  24. Okay, I'm off.

  25. So I fall into this pit. And then I think, okay, well,

  26. that was fun. And then I start to get out.

  27. But at my weight, those things just collapse. And they're

  28. up to about here. Okay, so it's a pit filled

  29. with these super soft sponges. And you're going like this

  30. and you push down and they just all push right

  31. back down.

  32. And I thought, I'm gonna die in this pit. I

  33. wanted to do a commercial. I've fallen and I can't

  34. get out. And actually, I couldn't get out.

  35. I literally, because there was nothing to step up on

  36. And so finally, Josh and Amy grabbed my hands and

  37. pulled me out. Have you ever been in a pit

  38. you couldn't get out of? That's why we're doing this series.

  39. Because we all have pits, financial pits, emotional pits, relational pits,

  40. sometimes life's just the pits. And some things you can't

  41. get around and some things you can't get over. You

  42. can't go under. You can't climb out on your own.

  43. You just gotta go through it. And sometimes you have

  44. to ask for help. Now, we're about two-thirds through this series.

  45. We're in week four. We've got three more that we

  46. wanna look at. But before we do, I wanna go

  47. back and review kind of where we've been. Because we've

  48. been talking about the six different phases or six responses

  49. or reactions to when you have a major loss in

  50. your life.

  51. You lose your job.

  52. You lose your health, you lose your spouse, you lose

  53. a loved one to death, you lose credibility, whatever. Everybody

  54. goes through losses in life and we all have major

  55. losses in life. Now these six phases that we've been

  56. looking at, shock and sorrow and struggle so far, And

  57. we're going to look at surrender, sanctification, and service. They're

  58. not really linear. In other words, it's not like you

  59. go through one and then that's it. And then you're done.

  60. You can actually bounce back and forth between these stages.

  61. In fact, you could have all six of them in

  62. one day. And you could get through shock and be

  63. going through sorrow and come out on struggle. And then

  64. all of a sudden you find yourself back in sorrow again.

  65. That's normal.

  66. These are not linear like you graduate from them. In

  67. a grieving period, you go through them all in different ways.

  68. So let's just review this. First, we said the typical

  69. reaction when you have a major loss in life is shock.

  70. And in shock, you feel numb.

  71. And we talked in that message about crying out to

  72. God and letting others help me.

  73. And we talked about how.

  74. Really you need other people in your life. You need

  75. fellowship when you're shocked. because you can't think straight, and

  76. other people need to think for you. And you can't

  77. pray straight, you need other people to pray for you.

  78. And you can't even believe straight when you're in shock,

  79. you need other people to believe for you.

  80. And so we're in shock.

  81. Then you move into the sorrow phase, and in sorrow

  82. you move from feeling numb to feeling grief. Remember we

  83. talked about how grief is a good thing. Grief is

  84. God's way of getting us through the transitions of life.

  85. that there is no life without change, there is no

  86. change without loss, there is no loss without pain, and

  87. there is no pain without grief. Grief is healthy. In fact,

  88. to not grieve is unhealthy. In fact, grief is the

  89. only thing that makes you different from the animals. It's

  90. the most human emotion. God grieves. It's not a sin

  91. to grieve. Jesus wept. We talked about that, that you

  92. cannot go around grief. You gotta go through it. And

  93. the reason why so many people have so many problems

  94. in adulthood is because they have never grieved over losses

  95. early on in life. They just stuffed it. And whenever

  96. you stuff your grief, you're the one who's gonna get sick.

  97. You're the one who it's gonna come out sideways. There's

  98. all kinds of bizarre behaviors and things like that. You

  99. have to face it to move on. We talked about

  100. how men, we're not particularly good at grieving. because we

  101. don't like to feel our emotions. In fact, we're often

  102. afraid of our emotions. And so we stuff them, and

  103. we don't want to deal with them. When you stuff it,

  104. your stomach keeps score. The only way to get through

  105. it is to go through it. And you can't stuff it,

  106. you can't deny it. Remember we talked about listing the

  107. losses that you've never grieved. There's some things that you went,

  108. a lot of grief is more than just losing a

  109. loved one. You can lose a lot of things in life.

  110. You can lose your identity, you can lose your credibility,

  111. you can lose your health, you can lose a position.

  112. And then you identify what you really lost and then

  113. you ask Jesus to heal your broken heart. Then last

  114. week we talked about struggle. And if in shock you

  115. feel numb and in sorrow you feel sad, in struggle

  116. you feel angry. And now you're starting to get frustrated.

  117. You're starting to get ticked off at God. You're getting

  118. a little angry at God. You go, why is this happening?

  119. That's the why questions of life. And remember I talked

  120. last week about how you have to learn how to

  121. what the Bible calls lament. Gave you a little acrostic care. Complain, appeal, remind, express.

  122. You gotta complain. Tell God what I think's unfair and

  123. then appeal to God's nature.

  124. You're a good God. You're a loving God. Help me

  125. out here.

  126. You gotta remind God of what he said. God loves

  127. to be reminded of his promises. And then I expressed

  128. my total trust in God. This week, we're gonna look

  129. at surrender. And if the emotion best described it with

  130. surrender is peace, it's the pathway to peace. Remember last week,

  131. I finished the message by saying, the only way you're

  132. gonna win a fight with God is surrender.

  133. But when you do, you win. because God pours out

  134. blessings on you in that surrendered attitude.

  135. Now specifically, what I want us to look at this

  136. week in surrendering and the path to peace of how

  137. do you let go of the pain.

  138. In your life?

  139. How do you get on? How do you move through it?

  140. How do you get past the pain so you don't

  141. get stuck? Because so many people are stuck at some

  142. point of major loss. They had a divorce, and that's

  143. defined their life. Now, everybody's going to have bad things

  144. happen to them.

  145. Everybody does. Everybody does.

  146. And you have three choices when bad things happen to you.

  147. You can let it destroy you. You can let it

  148. define you. You can let it develop you. You can

  149. let it destroy you. You can let it define you.

  150. Or you can let it develop you.

  151. Life can sometimes be challenging, isolating, and painful. Do you

  152. or someone you know need some powerful encouragement right now?

  153. Then let me tell you about the Journey Toward Hope.

  154. This guided Bible study book takes you on a journey

  155. to discover the five truths about who you are. You

  156. are loved. You have a purpose. You belong. You have

  157. a choice. And you are needed. This full-color vegan leather

  158. study tool is filled with scriptures, prayers, exercises, spaces to journal,

  159. and personal stories to help you uncover the hidden reasons

  160. you may lose hope and teach you how to maintain

  161. and bolster that hope for a lifetime. We'll send you

  162. your very own copy of Journey Toward Hope when you

  163. give a gift today to Daily Hope to take the

  164. hope of Jesus to a hurting world.

  165. What Kay and I want to share with you this

  166. weekend is how you let even the bad things in

  167. your life develop you and grow you by the act

  168. of surrender. Specifically, we're gonna look at a passage where David,

  169. King David in the Bible, lost his son.

  170. He had a baby that died.

  171. Now, the Bible says, look there on your outline, Romans 15,

  172. verse four, everything written in the scriptures was written to

  173. teach us in order that we might have hope. Circle

  174. that word hope. The Bible says that everything God gave

  175. us in the Bible was given for our encouragement and

  176. for our hope. And so these stories that are in

  177. the Bible, they're not just there for stories. This story

  178. of David losing a child is not just a story.

  179. It teaches us the principles of the path to peace

  180. through surrender. Now I don't know what losses you've had

  181. and I don't know what the losses that are gonna

  182. come in your life or in my life either, but

  183. you're gonna need to know how to respond to them.

  184. So let's look at David and this story of him

  185. losing a child, and then what he learned to do

  186. as a result of it. In 2 Samuel chapter 12,

    2 Samuel 12:16–24

  187. verses 16 to 24, it says this. David begged God

  188. to spare the child. Now, let me just say it.

  189. Bathsheba was pregnant, the baby was born, and then the

  190. baby gets very, very sick, and it is near death,

  191. and David is freaking out, and like any New dad,

  192. he is on the floor praying and crying and weeping.

  193. And it says, David begged God to spare the child.

  194. He went without food. In other words, he's fasting. And

  195. he lay all night on the bare ground. He's praying

  196. to God. Now the leaders of the nation, remember David

  197. is the king of Israel. The leaders of the nation

  198. pleaded with David to get up and to go eat something,

  199. eat with them. But he refused. Then on the seventh day,

  200. the baby died. So this has been going on for

  201. days and days. No food, no eating, just praying. On

  202. the seventh day, the baby died. Now David's advisors were

  203. afraid to tell him. He was so broken up about

  204. the baby being sick, they said, what's he gonna do

  205. to himself when he tell him that the child is dead?

  206. So they're worried about him.

  207. But when David saw them whispering, he realized what had happened.

  208. Is the baby dead, he asked. And yes, they replied.

  209. Now that's the setup of the story. And the rest

  210. of the story that Kay and I are gonna share

  211. with you are the six things that David does after

  212. he has a major loss.

  213. He's been praying all of his life for this baby

  214. to be well, but the baby dies.

  215. I told you that I prayed every day of Matthew's

  216. life for 27 years that God would heal him of

  217. his mental illness.

  218. And it didn't happen. It was the number one prayer

  219. of my life and it didn't happen.

  220. Now what does David do after this? Is he gonna

  221. let it destroy him? Is he gonna let it define him?

  222. Or is he gonna let it develop him? David does

  223. six things. If you ever needed to take notes, it's

  224. this weekend. Write these down. The first thing I need

  225. to do if I want to get on the pathway

  226. to peace is this, accept what cannot be changed. That's

  227. the first thing I have to do on the path

  228. to peace. That's the first step in surrender. I have

  229. to accept what cannot be changed. You know, when people

  230. receive bad news, what's the first response to it?

  231. I don't believe it.

  232. Exactly. I don't believe it. We reject it.

  233. In fact, usually if you tell somebody some really bad

  234. shocking news, here's what they'll start doing.

  235. They'll go like this.

  236. No, no, no, no, no.

  237. No, it can't be. I don't believe it. It couldn't be.

  238. It's impossible.

  239. It's not real because our minds reject shocking news.

  240. And the first reaction is no, no, it can't happen.

  241. It's not supposed to happen like this.

  242. That's the first typical reaction. But slowly, reality starts to

  243. set in, and you can't deny it anymore. That's where

  244. surrender comes in. Surrender is accepting of reality. Here's what

  245. David did. Look there in your outline. 2 Samuel 12,

    2 Samuel 12:22

  246. verse 22 and 23. David said this. I fasted and

  247. I wept while the child was alive. For I thought

  248. perhaps the Lord would be gracious and let the child live.

  249. But why should I fast when he is dead? Can

  250. I bring him back again?

  251. The answer is no. What is David doing here? He's

  252. accepting what cannot be changed.

  253. And when you have an immediate loss, like when I

  254. had a son who a few hours earlier, he was

  255. alive and then all of a sudden he was dead.

  256. And that was so shocking.

  257. It wasn't like a six-month cancer where you get a

  258. chance to prepare for it. It seemed so surreal in

  259. those early hours because all of a sudden he was

  260. not there anymore. And really for the first couple weeks

  261. I kept expecting him to walk in the.

  262. Door at night.

  263. Now what I say when I say accepting what can't

  264. be changed, in whatever loss you've had in your life,

  265. no matter what the loss is, the first thing you

  266. have to do is if it's over, it's over. And

  267. you accept what cannot be changed. Now, acceptance doesn't mean

  268. you stop caring.

  269. No, no. And acceptance doesn't mean it doesn't hurt. It does.

  270. And acceptance doesn't mean you even think that what happened

  271. is good.

  272. It's not.

  273. None of that's acceptance. Acceptance simply means I can't change it.

  274. David says, my son has died and I can't change that.

  275. I want you to write this question on your outline.

  276. What do I need to accept that's over in my life?

  277. What do I need to accept is over in my life?

  278. Maybe it's that job.

  279. And you keep thinking, maybe they're gonna call me back

  280. and give me another chance.

  281. I made a big mistake. I blew it. I really

  282. messed up. I really made a big mess of it.

  283. It's over. there ain't gonna be another chance.

  284. Maybe there's some relationship that's over and you just keep

  285. hoping they're coming back and you keep hoping they're gonna

  286. come back.

  287. You keep hoping they're gonna call. They're not coming back.

  288. It's over.

  289. Maybe you need to say, what I need to accept

  290. is that that season of my life is over.

  291. You know, I one time went to a high school reunion.

  292. I will never go again.

  293. Because there were some people still reliving the high school

  294. catch they made in a football game. I'm going, get

  295. a life. That happened 20 years ago. I mean, you're

  296. not in high school anymore. Have you looked in the mirror?

  297. That season of your life is never coming back.

  298. It's over. It's over. and you need to accept what

  299. cannot be changed.

  300. And the past in your life, for good or bad,

  301. the good things and the bad things, they are seasonal,

  302. and they're not there, and the past is past. Some

  303. of you, you've had a dream, and it didn't happen,

  304. and it's over. You need to get a new dream.

  305. You need to get a new vision. You need to

  306. get a new goal for your life. That's the first step.

  307. Accept what can't be changed. The second, and Kay is

  308. going to come and talk about this, is remember it's

  309. not the end of the story.

  310. It's not the end of the story is the second

  311. step to finding peace through surrender.

  312. When we experience a.

  313. Devastating or catastrophic loss of some kind, it's really normal

  314. to feel like this is the end.

  315. This is over.

  316. Nothing good can ever come from it. Everything is lost.

  317. King David, as he experienced the loss of his son,

  318. he was able to focus on the hope that was

  319. ahead of him, believing that God wasn't finished. 2 Samuel 12, 23,

  320. he says about his son, I will go to him

  321. one day, but he cannot.

  322. Return to me.

  323. He understood and accepted that his son would never be

  324. with him again on this earth, but he was confident

  325. that he would be reunited with his child, that his

  326. son was not going to come to him, but he

  327. was going to go to his child, and that the

  328. baby's death was not the end of the story. I

  329. told you a few weeks ago when I spoke that

  330. I know that Matthew's death is not the end of

  331. his story. It's not the end of our family's story,

  332. but that doesn't mean that there aren't moments that I

  333. don't doubt because I do. Matthew is in heaven. heaven,

  334. but I can't see heaven. I can stare out at

  335. the sky, and I can stare as hard as I can,

  336. and I can look, and I can look, and try

  337. to penetrate the veil of this existence to catch a

  338. glimpse of heaven, and I can't. I simply cannot do it.

  339. And what I'm learning to say is this, Lord, I believe.

  340. Help my unbelief.

  341. And if you will be honest about your own walk

  342. with God, there have got to be those moments in

  343. which you would say that same thing.

  344. God, I believe. I do. I believe. But there are

  345. still these doubts.

  346. There are these things that I can't see, things that

  347. are mysterious, things that I don't know what to do with.

  348. And so we just end that prayer with, God, help

  349. my unbelief. There's nothing wrong with praying a prayer like that. See,

  350. God never is content to let a single one of

  351. our stories end in ashes. He promises that he will

  352. bring beauty from ashes. Where I struggle is sometimes believing

  353. not that he will bring beauty from ashes, but how?

  354. How will he bring beauty from these ashes?

  355. Because I am completely and utterly convinced that he will

  356. not let our story end with just ashes. I told

  357. you about the hope box that I had all the

  358. years that Matthew was ill and that I believed and

  359. how I stuffed it full of verses that I was

  360. clinging to that God was going to heal Matthew and

  361. then God didn't heal Matthew. And I told you that

  362. what I had now besides rebuilding this hope box is

  363. that I had a mental picture of a little pot

  364. that I was collecting and I called it the mystery

  365. pot and I was putting all the things that I

  366. don't know what to do with in that pot.

  367. Well I have a friend who knows that.

  368. I'm very literal and I now have a little mystery

  369. pot if you will and this little pot has Questions.

  370. It has questions, and every time I think of another

  371. question that I don't know how to answer, that I

  372. don't know the answer to, that I can't figure out,

  373. it goes in the pot, and it sits on my

  374. devotional table, and it sits there as a reminder of

  375. this is real. This is real stuff that I'm dealing with.

  376. The questions that you have about faith and about.

  377. The losses in your life, they are real questions that

  378. And so if you do something like this, a little

  379. pot or something else, but the point of it for

  380. me as I look at it is not that I

  381. have questions that I can't answer.

  382. The point of this is to remind me that God

  383. will not let ashes be the end of the story.

  384. In grief, one of the most challenging transitions I'm discovering

  385. is moving toward the future rather than hanging.

  386. Around in the past. That's a really challenging thing for me.

  387. Jerry Sitzer, who wrote a book that I recommended to you,

  388. A Grace Disguised, we have in the pavilion, he lost his.

  389. Mother, his wife, and his four-year-old daughter in a car accident.

  390. And he wrote this incredible book. And he says, when

  391. talking about how do we move into the future, he

  392. says this, how could I conceive of a future without them?

  393. The very thought was abhorrent to me. Whenever I thought

  394. of the future, I still found them.

  395. There, but they were never going to be there. which

  396. only made me more aware of how devastating my loss was.

  397. I remembered a past that included people I did not

  398. want to give up.

  399. And I imagined a future that excluded people I desperately

  400. wanted to keep.

  401. And I find this very true. When we think of

  402. the past, our loved one is in it. Every time

  403. you think of the past, that person you've lost is

  404. in your past.

  405. They were there. They were such an integral part of it.

  406. And it's so impossible in these early stages, at least

  407. for us, to envision a future.

  408. In which our loved one isn't there.

  409. And so what we do if we're not careful is

  410. we get stuck in the present. We get stuck here

  411. in this limbo land because we don't want to leave

  412. the past because that's where the loved one was. And

  413. we can't envision a future in which they're not there.

  414. We're disbelieving that they won't. And so we stay in

  415. this very uncomfortable limbo land of the present.

  416. And some of you would probably.

  417. Agree with me that A little nagging sense of guilt

  418. can creep in.
