Still Called

And that's what this series called is all about.

God making and molding us into disciples. And

I'm going to conclude today, this series, by

inviting you to join me in Psalms, excuse me,

in John 21. John 21 and verse 15. And I pray

that this series has been a blessing to you.

And for those that are... Not here with us or

those that are watching from other places. God

bless you. I've had people reach out to me, even

outside of this church, who have been sharing

how this series has ministered to them and been

a blessing to them. And so we thank the Lord

for that. We give God the glory that this message

can get out, amen, and that others can be blessed.

The word of the Lord says in John 21, verse 15,

John 21:15

when they had finished eating, Jesus said to

Simon, Peter, Simon son of Jonah, do you love

me more than these? Yes, Lord, he said, you know

that I love you. Jesus said, feed my lambs. Again,

Jesus said, Simon son of Jonah, do you love me?

He answered, yes, Lord, you know that I love

you. And Jesus said, take care of my sheep. The

third time he said to him, Simon son, Son of

Jonah, do you love me? Peter was hurt because

Jesus asked him a third time, do you love me?

He said, Lord, you know all things. You know

that I love you. Jesus said, feed my sheep. Somebody

say amen today. I'm going to talk and preach

today on the thought still called. Still called.

Why don't we pray? Father, we love you today.

We thank you for the beauty of your presence

that we have felt, God, throughout this service.

Without a shadow of a doubt, Lord, you are here.

You are here. You are in our midst, God. And

so we thank you. And I pray, Lord, that you would

anoint our ears to hear what the Spirit is saying

to us today. And I pray, God, that every word

that comes out of my mouth would not be my own.

The word that you have placed in my heart, deposited

in me, Lord. I ask this right now, anoint my

lips of clay. In Jesus' name, I pray this. Amen.

Amen, somebody. You may be seated in God's presence.

Someone say, still called. There is a Japanese

art form called kintsugi. Kintsugi is a... piece

of pottery that is broken. The artist doesn't

throw it away and he doesn't try to hide the

cracks either as though the breaking never happened.

Instead, the broken pieces are carefully put

back together and the seams are highlighted with

And the result of Kintsugi is something remarkable.

The cracks are still there. You can still see

where the vessel broke, but it has been restored.

Today I have brought an example of Kintsugi.

You can take a look here at this mug that I'm

holding up. I wanted a bigger example, but...

This is the best I can get on eBay in the short

amount of time. Amen. So you're more than welcome

to take a look at this. But as you can tell,

this is a cup. There are some cracks in the cup

and even on the inside, you can see. And this

cup here was put back together through the Kintsugi

process. And what's interesting is that they

did not cover up those blemishes, those cracks

in the vessel, but they highlighted it. And now

these golden fractures or fault lines become

a part of the beauty, become a part of its story.

You look at a cup like this and you automatically

know that if that cup had a voice, it would have

something to say. It could probably tell you

about how it felt when it broke and what that

must have been like if it had a voice. But the

beauty is not found. in the hidden blemishes,

but is found in the fact that it has been reconstructed

and repaired. And this is something that, as

we think about Peter, I look at him that way,

as a Kintsugi. Peter had been fractured. He had

publicly failed the Lord in the most dramatic

and public way. When he denied Jesus three times,

each denial leaving another break, another fracture

in his life. Peter had this thing as we study

and learn about him. He was impulsive, of course.

He stuck his foot in his mouth more than once

or twice. And he had always promised more than

he could actually deliver. And he promised the

Lord that he would never turn his back on him.

Not me, God. I would never do that to you. I

would never break my word. I would never deny

knowing you. But indeed, this is exactly what

happened. And now in John 21, he is standing

face to face with the one he failed. I don't

know about you, but... I can't tell you how many

promises that I've broken with God. I've broken

a lot of promises with God. I've broken promises

with him, too many to count. In fact, I've lost

count of all the promises. Promises, big and

small. Promises to do more. I don't know if anybody

here has ever made a promise to God like that.

Like, God, I'm going to do more. And you didn't

do what you said you were going to do. Hello.

Promises to live bolder, to forgive sooner, to

love stronger. Promises like, God, I'm never

going to do that again. I learned my lesson.

And what ends up happening, you do it again.

Lord, this is the last time I'm going to do this.

And as time goes on, you... Find yourself having

to ask God for forgiveness for the very thing

you told him I would never do again. Do I have

a witness out there? Amen. Y 'all are kind of

quiet, but I know we've all been there. But it

is hard to admit that, isn't it? It's like, hmm.

Nobody wants to admit. There's a bit of shame

involved in that. There's a bit of guilt involved

with... your soul and with opening up yourself

or with confessing and admitting that I have

made promises that I've broken. But it's important

for us to be real with God today, to be real

with ourselves and to look within in those areas

of our own life where we have fallen short. Of

God's standard. Where we have not measured up.

Where we have broken a promise. When we have

said more than we actually did. We have stuck

our foot in our mouth. Or even if it was a baby

toe. You still stuck it in your mouth. You said

something that you were going to do. You let

somebody down. You let God down. Let a friend

down. Let a co -worker. Let a spouse. Let a family

member or you just let yourself down. You made

yourself a promise. How about that? I'm going

to go to the gym four times this week. And you're

lucky you barely made it once. You make little

promises with yourself, right? You make a pact

with you. I'm going to do this. And you say,

I'm not going to post about it. I'm not going

to say nothing. I'm just going to do it. And

many times we break promises even with ourselves.

But this is something that I want us to understand

about God today. I hope I can weave throughout

this message. I don't plan to be very long, but

I, is that we have to have a revelation of the

faithfulness of God. Amen. How many of you know

God's faithful? Come on, I need a better amen

than that. It's not for me, it's for the Lord.

How many of you know he's faithful? Here's what

you need to know about the faithfulness of God.

God's faithfulness does not depend on ours. Let

me say that again. God's faithfulness does not

depend on ours. God's faithfulness is not dependent

on your faithfulness. Because how many of you

know God has been faithful even when we were

unfaithful? Oh, hallelujah. So if God's faithfulness

depends on my faithfulness, I'm in big trouble.

There's not a lot of hope for me and you. But

the faithfulness of God transcends the faithfulness

of man. And this truth comes into focus as Jesus

begins to deal. with the kintsugi process of

rebuilding the faith and the ministry and the

calling of this disciple, Simon Peter. Because

God proves to him that his faithfulness has not

depended on his. Some scholars theorize that

the three questions Jesus asked, do you love

me, three times, correlates with Peter's three

denials. In any case, this is not an interrogation.

Peter is not being interrogated by God, which

is what sometimes we feel is going to happen

when we must be confronted about failures and

mistakes, sins, faults and missteps in our life.

Like God is going to grill us, point the finger

and say, aha! I told you so. Many people have

this idea about God. They have this perception

of an I told you so kind of God. How many of

you know people like that, amen? That if I tell

them what I did, the first thing they're going

to tell me is, I told you so. Why didn't you

listen to me? Instead of trying to help you or...

That's the first thing that comes out, or that's

the look they give you. Should have listened

to me. Well, I didn't, so here I am. God's first

word to you when we fail, to me when we fail,

is not I told you so. Not why didn't you listen

to me the first time. His first word to you is

more of a question, do you love me? Because God's

intent is not to catch you. God already knew.

Can I tell you? He already knows you're going

to fail. Do you know that when you fail God,

when you make a mistake, you don't surprise him?

Hello, somebody. When you fail, God's not like,

oh, my goodness, I can't believe they did that.

God knows. How many of you know he knows the

end from the beginning? God knows we're going

to fail him. Just like you did with Peter. He

said, Peter, you're going to deny me, son. It's

going to happen. Oh, no, God, not me. You've

got the wrong disciple. I would never do that

to you. And Jesus says, it's going to happen.

I've got news for everybody today. This is going

to sound kind of negative and kind of bad, but

just bear with me. You're going to fail at some

point. At something, at some point. It happens

to the best of us. So why don't we just get it

out in the open and be like, yeah, I'm going

to make mistakes. I'm going to fall short of

his glory. I'm going to mess up and I'm going

to, you know, I'm going to fumble here and there.

But here's the good thing about God is that God's

not trying to catch you off guard. He's not trying

to throw stones at you. He's not trying to cut

you from the team. He's looking for ways to reinstill

in all of us the idea that we are still. called

by his name. Why don't we give him some praise

today. Hallelujah. So Jesus begins and the first

thing he does and the first thing that an artist

will do with Kintsugi is to rejoin the pieces.

Someone say rejoin the pieces. Got to rejoin

the pieces. This is the first work of Kintsugi

is to Bring the separated pieces back together.

Do you know why? Because every broken piece matters.

Every shard matters. Every connection counts.

When you take a look at this here, you'll find

that there's even some small little pieces that,

you know, a small little area, like, you know,

just let that one go. It's not that big of a,

no, no, no. Every little piece, the big and the

small. They all count. And when the artist begins

to rejoin the pieces, he gets all of them gathered

and collects them together. And this is what

Jesus is doing relationally with Peter. He's

bringing all the pieces together. And the Lord

started this process in a very unexpected way.

When you back up the story a little bit, you'll

see that Peter found himself in a familiar predicament.

One that... preached about, I believe it was

last week, where he was fishing all night and

he caught nothing. Here he is again, coming up

short. No fish after toiling all night. So Jesus

told them, in verse 6, cast the net on the right

side of the boat and you will find some. And

watch what happens next. So they cast. And now

they were not able to draw it in because of the

multitude of faith. Remember I told you God's

faithfulness doesn't depend on yours? Don't you

think, in human terms, this would have been the

right moment for Jesus? I'm not going to bless

him that good right now. This might have been

the moment. Now, come on. This is how some of

us are sometimes. You know, I'm going to let

him work for it. I'm going to let him sweat it

out a little bit. have earned his way back into

my good graces. I'm gonna let him sweat it out.

I'm gonna let him, you know, like flounder around

and sort of, I'm not gonna like bless his, I'm

not gonna bless his socks off right now, you

know. I'm not gonna go overboard. Just, you know,

I'll throw him a little something, just a little

reminder that I still love you. Like, you know,

I'll wink at him, you know, but I'm not gonna

hug him, you know. I'm not, but he, the Lord

blesses him in such a way that this had to have

Confounded Peter. He said, oh my goodness, look

at all of this fish that the Lord has blessed

me. See, the Lord doesn't wait until we have

everything put back together before he reminds

us of how good and how faithful and how wonderful

and how awesome he is. Amen somebody. He doesn't

wait for us to get our whole act together. He

doesn't wait for us to get ourselves polished

and all perfected. He doesn't wait for that to

happen to show us his glory and to show us his

goodness and his faithfulness. So today I want

to just thank the Lord even when I didn't fully

measure up and I was still a broken mess that

God still loved me in that state and he still

blessed me. So sometimes God will throw you a

lifeline. He'll let you get another overflowing

catch and you say, Lord, why are you blessing

me like this? I don't deserve this. I haven't

been. The kind of man or the kind of woman that

I am supposed to be. I haven't been living up

to, Lord, the standard that you've called me

to, Lord. I've been messing up and I don't deserve

it, but God is telling you and he's telling me

today, I'm not blessing you because you deserve

it. I'm blessing you because I'm still called

you and I still want you to know that I've got

a plan. I've come to tell somebody today that

God wants you to know that he's still here and

he's still faithful and he's not. Done with you

yet. Hallelujah. Peter had seen this movie before.

He's seen this one before. He's read this chapter

before because he had already had an empty net

scenario and a miraculous cat. So he has seen

this before and he understands that God is at

work in his life and Jesus was rejoining the

pieces. He's rejoining. these pieces by taking

Peter back to the beginning and saying to him,

do you remember how I called you the first time?

Sometimes God will take you back. To your first

love. He'll take you back to where it all started.

He'll take you back to that altar. He'll take

you back to that prayer room. He'll take you

back to that message. He'll take you back through

a song. He'll take you back through a word. He'll

take you back through a hug. God has ways of

taking us back to those places where we once

again rediscover what it's all about. Back to

that place of surrender. Back to that place of

worship. Back to that place where we first heard

his voice. How many of you remember that time

in your life where you heard the voice of the

Lord the first time so clearly? How many of you

remember that time where you felt the presence

of the Lord so powerfully? Amen, somebody? Anybody

remember that? Or has it been that long? Or have

you forgotten what it felt like? Or has it been

so many years that you forgot the touch and the

warmth that came over you the first time you

felt the Holy Ghost and His Spirit and filled

your life and you spoke with other times? How

many of you remember that time and that moment

where the Lord touched on you and His Spirit

moved upon you and you felt something that you

never felt before? Sometimes God wants to take

us back to those places so that you remember

I'm the same God that spoke to you then that

is speaking to you now. I'm the same God that

surrounded you there with my love like I'm surrounding

you now. I still got a plan for you. As real

as I was there is as real as I am now. Somebody

give him some praise today. Sometimes God takes

us back to those places. Takes us back to that

old well. That old well of worship. He'll take

us back to those places so that we can once again

realize that God hasn't changed. Can I tell you

right now, somebody needs to hear this on the

Holy Ghost. God has not changed his mind about

you. Woo! my Lord. Hallelujah. If you don't hear

anything else I say today, hear that God has

not changed his mind about you. God is not flippant.

You understand what I'm saying? He's not flippant.

He's not fickle. He doesn't fall in and out of

love with you. He doesn't change his mind about,

nah, people can be like that. People are flippant

and people are fickle and people will change

and they'll fall in and out of love with you.

You know, they got a good opinion of you today

and tomorrow they got a bad one. God's opinion

of you has not changed. He still sees you. Come

on now, somebody. He still sees you as his son

and as his daughter. He is consistent. He's the

same yesterday, today, and forevermore. God changes

not. And his mind is made up about you. Just

like it was for Peter. And so he gathers all

the pieces. And secondly, as we see illustrated

in the... Kintsugi processes that he seals the

fractures. Kintsugi isn't merely just placing

broken pieces all beside each other. No, the

pieces have to be bonded together and the cracks

in the vessel have to be sealed. in the deepest

parts this is not a surface thing when you look

at this you feel it we're going to have show

and tell today everybody can touch the vessel

today man And you put your fingers on the grooves.

And this is not a surface thing. This is not

just like a superficial job that was done. You

can dip your fingers in some of the grooves and

feel the depth and the places, the deep places

where the sealing and the bonding happen. And

there's texture there. There's inconsistencies

and there's texture. And you realize that the

sealant that was used to bond this thing together

went into. the deepest areas that were fractured

in this vessel. And so that's the only way to

ensure that this thing doesn't break again. That's

the only way to assure. Because if you just wanted

to do a rush job, you can just put some, maybe

a little bit of Elmer's glue, you know. You put

some tape on the outside. Okay, that'll do just

fine. But then is it really going to hold up

over time, right? It's not going to have the

structural integrity that it needs to be useful

again. God's not interested, hear me today, in

doing a rush, quick, fixed job in your heart

and in your life. Amen. God wants to go deep

in places in us. to seal those areas in us. And

it is a process. It's not an overnight thing

that God does. But John tells us what Jesus did

when he waited for Peter. The Bible says that

he waited for Peter by a fire. He was on the

shore. Peter was out on the boat. Jesus was there

cooking some fish. Amen. I wonder how good that

fish must have tasted. Amen. He was cooking some

fish right there on the fire. And then Peter

comes and he... Sits next to Jesus by the fire.

So there is the Lord. There is Peter sitting

fireside having this conversation. Now, it doesn't

seem much to us that they would be sitting there

by the fire. But it's interesting because if

you go back and you look at when Peter had denied

the Lord and failed him three times, you'll see

that he was also at that time sitting by a fire.

He was sitting out in front of the temple. The

Bible says that he was warming himself by the

fire. So imagine the scene. There is Peter. He's

sitting out in front of the temple. He's warming

himself by the fire. And then folks begin to

come and say, you look like you, are you one

of those disciples? He said, oh no, that's not

me. And he denies the Lord three times while

sitting by, someone say the fire. He failed the

Lord by the fire. Oh, my gosh. You see, you could

be close to the fire. You could be so close to,

whoo, ouch, it's hot, man, I got the Holy Ghost,

and still fail him. Don't think you got, man,

you got to, only those that are, you know, they

got one foot in the world. No, you can have both

feet in the church and still fail him. He's by

the fire. He's so close to the fire, man, he's

sweaty. He could feel the heat on his brow, and

there he failed the Lord. Now fast forward to

this moment where Jesus is trying to rebuild

and restore his life. Where is he sitting again?

By a fire. He brought him back to another fire.

Here we begin to see another way God works. Sometimes

God brings us back to the fire. Back to a place

where your confidence collapsed. Back to the

issue that you've tried to avoid. Back to the

moment where you failed, fell, broke your word.

I wonder as if, I wonder that while Peter was

sitting there by the fire and the coals are crackling,

you know, little fires, you know, and I wonder

if it dawned on him there as he sat by the fire,

remembering the last fire that he... That he

stood at and how he felt. I wonder if he made

that connection, you know, in his mind. I wonder

if he made that. I wonder if he connected those

two dots in his mind. They're like, here I am

sitting at another fire. But this time the Lord

is trying to restore me. He's trying to, I wonder

if he made that connection. Because I see a connection

here that sometimes God will take us back to

those same places. Not to shame us. Not to cast

us off. But to seal those areas of our life that

are broken. And to keep us from pulling apart

again. And he begins to heal us by the fire.

And it hurts a little bit. And it's uncomfortable.

Maybe Peter is sitting there at the second fire.

And, you know, he's starting to sweat bullets.

Like, oh, here we go again. Jesus is bringing

me back to the fire. Maybe he's going to use

this moment to, you know, beat me over the head.

Maybe he's going to use this moment to really

show me, really, you know, really rub it in.

How bad I'm... I fell and what I did wrong. Maybe

Jesus is going to use this fire moment to go,

you know, make a point out of me. Make an example

out of me. But that's not what God had in mind

at all with him. And it's not what he has in

mind with you. But there are moments that God

will take us into a fire moment. Into a place

of pressure. A place where we can feel the heat

of his word a little bit. Feel conviction a little

bit. Feel the heat of his presence a little bit.

Feel the fire of the word a little bit. little

bit so that we can understand that God is working

and he's trying to put us in a place where we

where he can remake us and reshape us but we've

got to come to terms with the things that we've

done so that he can heal us and he can restore

us and seal those places back in our life so

that we won't fall apart again because here's

the thing once God seals those fractures in our

life he doesn't want those things to break down

again. When God heals you, he doesn't want you

to get hurt in the same place again. When God

restores you, he doesn't want you to break in

the same place again. You might break in other

places. You might get fractured in other places,

but when God does a work, he does it to such

a way that it's more valuable than it was when

it was whole in the beginning. I've come to tell

you today that God wants to heal you, but your

healing is in the ceiling. And you won't get

healed right until you get sealed right. The

problem is that some of us, I'm almost done,

but some of us, we want to get healed without

being sealed. Some folks missed a good one today.

You're going to have to send them the YouTube

link. Hallelujah. You can't say, why am I not

healed? Because you won't let them seal you.

We're asking God for healing without going through

the ceiling, without putting those pieces. Well,

yeah, but it's messy, and there's a lot of work

involved, and I've got all these little pieces.

No one said it was going to be easy. No one said,

but if you're looking for God to heal the areas

of your life and your heart, your ministry, your

marriage, whatever that, whatever it is that's

broken, you need to let him seal it and bring

it back together one piece at a time. Meticulously

and carefully and lovingly and gently, God will

do it one thing at a time. He'll seal it. And

once that part gets sealed, oh, then we can move

to the next part. And then after that part gets

sealed, then we can. Move to the next part. It's

not just, oh, abracadabra, walakazoo, and it's

all together. Oh, there it is, you know. No,

God does it peace. Someone say, peace by peace.

This is how God does it. And so as the musician

gets ready, I begin to look at how God dealt

with Peter. And the thing that really stuck out

to me, and I pray that this word will just. Minister

to you and help you. I come to be a help today.

Come to be a help. Is that as Jesus was healing

him, this was, some of us have the idea of healing

like I don't want to feel nothing. How many of

you have ever gone to, you had a wound and you

go to the clinic, right? Or you're in pain and

they have to work on you. I don't know how many

of you are a chicken like me. But I'm like, put

in the drug so I don't feel anything. Or when

you go to a tooth, you go to the dentist, right?

They're working on something. Give me whatever.

It doesn't feel good. But we don't want to feel

it, right? We don't want to feel it. Because

the whole idea is you're supposed to fix me.

You're not supposed to make me hurt more. But

when God heals, he doesn't numb us. I'm going

to help you right now. When God heals, when God

operates, he doesn't numb us. And at first it

sounds like, why? That sounds painful. It is.

It is. That's what Peter felt. Why do you think

he got hurt with the Lord? Because after the

first time, okay, maybe he's just checking in

on me. Do you love me? Yes. By the second time,

do you love me? Peter's thinking. Where's this

going? Yes, Lord, I love you. We're good, right?

We're good? We're all right? Okay. But by the

third time, Peter's like, okay, wait a minute.

I'm a little offended now. I'm kind of hurt that

you keep asking me. Because what does the repeated

question imply? If you're Peter, you're thinking,

does he see something that I'm not seeing? Is

there something about the way that I'm loving

him that isn't what he desires? Oh, can you imagine

the questions going through his mind? Like, what

am I saying wrong? I keep telling him what he

wants me to say. Lord, I love you. You want me

to say it deeper? I love you. How do you want

me to say it, God? What's going to satisfy you?

And the Lord keeps asking. And Peter gets hurt

because God doesn't numb us when he's healing

us. Sometimes we need to feel it. You say, why

do I need to feel it? So that when you come through

it, oh, my God, you'll have a testimony. You

say, it hurt, but I didn't die. It hurt, but

I didn't die. You know, it was difficult, but

I made it. I went through moments where I didn't

think I was going to be able to make it. But

I made it. There were painful moments because

God never promised to take away all the pain.

He said he would never leave us. He said he would

never forsake us. But he never said that there

wouldn't be trouble. Would you stand with me

today? He never said there wouldn't be trouble.

He never said it wasn't going to hurt. He never

said it. Restoration hurts sometimes. Healing.

Or someone say, it hurts. Healing hurts. But

this is the process. Because if the kintsugi,

if this cup had a voice, every piece that's being

Painfully, surgically reapplied. It could not

have felt good. Ouch. Ouch. That hurt. Ouch.

Did you have to press so hard right there? Sorry.

Oops. You know, like I'm being as gentle as I

can. But there are certain things that are just

going to hurt. Because relationships are messy.

Because ministry can be messy sometimes. Because

the church, the church is messy sometimes. Discipleship

is messy. It's going to hurt. You know, speaking

the truth in love hurts. Right? When you do it

in love, even if you do it in love, it still

hurts. The Bible says that faithful are the wounds

of a brother. Sometimes God wounds us even through

our brothers not to hurt us but. God's trying

to teach us something. He's trying to build us.

He's trying to remake us. He's trying to shape

us. And sometimes it hurts. But if we will submit

to the process, final slide, can you give it

to me? Can you give it to us here? Is that he

redeems the vessel. And he puts gold. Everyone

say gold. Kintsugi doesn't just fill it with

dirt. It doesn't just fill it with... With mortar,

cement. Because when God does something, and

after the process of being healed and restored,

he leaves you more valuable than you were. This

cup I'm holding in my hand is more valuable now

than it was before it was broken. So much so

that I had to scour eBay to find it. Because

they're expensive. Why would a broken thing be

so expensive? Because it has a story. You have

a story. You have a story. The gold. Someone

say the gold. The gold is the grace of God. It's

the grace. Gold is grace and grace is gold. And

this is what the grace of God will do. It'll

turn your tests into testimonies. It'll turn

your trials into triumphs. It'll turn your mistakes

into miracles. Your wounds into wisdom and your

pain into power. This is what God wants to do.

And when he does it, that's when he'll say, all

right, now you're ready to feed my sheep. Now

you're ready. Ready to love my sheep and to tend

to my sheep. I've got a plan for your life. If

you'll let me touch you and tell you that you're

still called by my name. You're still called

with a high calling. You're still called to love

and to serve and to be a witness to the world.

I wonder right there where we're at if we can

connect with the Holy Ghost. Let God. Let God

surgically repair every area of your heart, of

your life, your mind, areas of your mind that

are broken, areas of your heart that are broken.

This is the final touch that God wants to do.

This is the finishing touch on the process of

making you a disciple. It's not how eloquent

you are. It's not how gifted you are. It's have

you allowed God to make you, if you allow God

to restore you, allow God to heal you, allow

him to mend your wounds. God, I thank you right

now. Come on, why don't we just thank the Lord?

Why don't we worship him right now, God? Oh,

Lord Jesus, why don't you just let the Holy Ghost

move in your heart today? Say, God! I need you

to work on me. Come on, with those eyes closed

in this place, I need somebody today. I know

this was, maybe it wasn't for everybody, but

I know it was for somebody. Somebody today needs
