  1. And what I wanted to challenge you to do with

  2. this year that we're leaving and we're going into a

  3. new year, but be very careful that.

  4. You remember it right. Your memory is a mess, you

  5. know that.

  6. You've been memorizing all the wrong stuff. You've been memorizing

  7. all the things.

  8. That went wrong.

  9. That's why you're miserable, because of your memory. I'm going

  10. to come to this side and see if I can find.

  11. Anybody, anybody at all at the praise party at Elevation Church.

  12. If you would start recalling to your mind all of

  13. the ways he's made, all of the promises he's kept,

  14. all of the things he's carried you through, all of

  15. the valleys.

  16. That he walked you out of. If you would remember,

  17. you would rejoice.

  18. If you would remember, you would open your mouth.

  19. And praise God.

  20. That's just.

  21. I recall it to my mind.

  22. I call it.

  23. I call it. Master your memory.

  24. Don't let your memory master you. Paul said, I'm not

  25. chained to this floor. I'm chained to the faithfulness of God.

  26. He was faithful this morning and he's faithful at midnight.

  27. I'm not memorizing my pain this year.

  28. So I want to get you in the right.

  29. Atmosphere tonight because you're sitting there at Rock Hill, you're

  30. sitting there at Lake Norman, and you're going over and

  31. over and over and over again.

  32. I saw something on my phone.

  33. It was called a memory movie. Did you know that

  34. you can do that now? If you have an iPhone,

  35. you can go on and set all the memories that

  36. you want and make a video out of it. Well,

  37. I'm going to make a movie about this year, but

  38. I'm going to skip some scenes.

  39. And it's not that they didn't happen.

  40. It's just that I'm not putting them on my plot line.

  41. It's my memory. And I've been remembering it wrong. That's

  42. why you keep messing up relationships. You only remember the

  43. one time that they said that rude thing to you. 27,942

  44. times they were nice to you. You remember the one.

  45. Manage your memory. And it's your movie. Paul had mastered

  46. his memory.

  47. Here's how I know.

  48. Not only did he sing the hymn at midnight, which

  49. indicates the fact that he knew that God was going

  50. to deliver him, because maybe God had done it before.

  51. Maybe once you beat a lion, beat a bear, Goliath

  52. ain't so bad. Maybe it's not so scary to go

  53. through the Jordan when you've been across the Red Sea.

  54. Memorize memorize memorize memorize memorize.

  55. Muscle memory muscle memory did you know that the same

  56. way you can develop muscle memory in the weight room

  57. you can develop miracle memory in.

  58. Your spiritual life i got all night i got all

  59. night i got all.

  60. Night so so so paul 10 years later is writing

  61. to the philippian church remember i told you that he

  62. wrote a letter to them philippians and he's he's talking

  63. to him and he says uh This is Philippians 1,

    Philippians 1:3

  64. verse 3. I don't have it memorized, so I need

  65. it on the screen. He's writing to the church that

  66. was founded when he went to a woman named Lydia,

  67. and he ended up going to prison. Yet when he

  68. goes to speak to them a decade later about what happened,

  69. what he has to say.

  70. About it in his memory, he says, You know what?

  71. I thank my God every time I remember you. Some

  72. of us, if we're writing this … We say, every

  73. time I remember you, I think of that night I

  74. spent when they beat my back. Paul said, no, no, no.

  75. When I remember you, I remember the outcome, not the opposition.

  76. The way I respond has to do with the way

  77. I remember. I thank my God every time I remember you.

  78. In all my prayers with you, I thank my God.

  79. I remember you with joy when I remember. I don't

  80. remember the pain. I remember the purpose. He doesn't even

  81. mention the prison, because by this time, the purpose is so.

  82. Big that that night in prison seems small. It's just

  83. one night.

  84. Memorize.

  85. I was talking to Eric this morning.

  86. I said, do you remember what happened when they sang

  87. praises to God? He said, yeah, the prison doors opened

  88. and everyone's chains came off. Because I've preached that before now.

  89. I mean, any preacher can preach that. If you're trying

  90. to preach the Bible and you can't preach on this passage,

  91. you should definitely sharpen your other skills and resume out there.

  92. But he said.

  93. I said, yeah, and the prison door slew open.

  94. Right.

  95. And I asked him, I said, and then what? He

  96. didn't know. He didn't remember. He remembers his fantasy football lineup,

  97. but he didn't remember. Come on, that's my best friend.

  98. I'm just having a good time. I've been friends since

  99. high school.

  100. But that's, you know, what I want to happen next

  101. in this story, and I know I don't get to

  102. write the Bible, and Luke is writing this, right?

  103. He's recording it under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit.

  104. What happened here?

  105. And it would be great to end the sermon on

  106. what happened at midnight, because they praised him at midnight.

  107. Chains came loose, which represents freedom. Doors flew open, which

  108. represents escape. But what happens next? Well, I know what

  109. I'd do if I'm Paul.

  110. It's not hard. First, you've got to memorize. And then

  111. you got to mobilize. So I'm out.

  112. Because God answered my prayer.

  113. And that's what the earthquake was for. And there's the

  114. door open and look in the Lord.

  115. Good.

  116. I'm out. How many of you are with me? You're out.

  117. But remember how you always had that one kid in

  118. your class that would raise their hand at the end

  119. of class and the teacher forgot to take up the

  120. homework assignment.

  121. But that one kid, that one kid would raise his

  122. hand and say, ah, Ms. Smith, are you going to

  123. take over my homework? Because I totally did it, Ms.

  124. Smith.

  125. Look, look, what's this?

  126. I love finding the church people who aren't used to

  127. having fun in church. Paul is that kid.

  128. Because the doors fly open, right?

  129. This is amazing.

  130. We're out. god is good praise the lord hallelujah.

  131. But watch.

  132. Watch paul is that kid huh the jailer woke up

  133. verse 27 and when he saw the prison doors open

  134. he said oh crap tried to kill himself he said

  135. it in greek um Because he thought the prisoners had escaped. Well,

  136. of course he did. Because that's what you do. But apparently,

  137. Paul is better at preaching than he is at prison breaks.

  138. Paul messes up the whole thing.

  139. Because what I want to see next, I either want

  140. Shawshank Redemption, Andy Dufresne crawling through the sewer, coming out

  141. like this in the rain on TBS.

  142. Or I want Paul with his shank.

  143. Maybe I watched one too many Quentin Tarantino movies. I

  144. shouldn't confess that on the stage.

  145. But I want to see some action. The doors are open.

  146. Earthquake.

  147. This is anticlimactic. I'm just warning you.

  148. Because we always preach about what happened at midnight. But

  149. the miracle isn't what happened at midnight. The miracle is

  150. what happened after midnight. It was what Paul had put

  151. in his heart before midnight that gave him the hymn

  152. to sing when midnight hit. And the way that he

  153. went through the midnight is what gave him the credence

  154. and the validity to have a message to share. The

  155. way that you go through your trials, the way that

  156. you go through your dark seasons, the way that you

  157. go through the confusing times and the crucible of the trial,

  158. the testing of your faith.

  159. But Paul baffles me, man. Because the doors fly open.

  160. And instead of running, Paul shouted, shut up, man. Look

  161. what he shouted. Don't harm yourself. We... Listen to that.

  162. It's anticlimactic, right?

  163. Why were you singing and praying if you were just

  164. going to stand in the same place when the doors open?

  165. But maybe Paul had the kind of faith.

  166. That doesn't only give.

  167. You the way of escape because that's what a lot

  168. of us really want when we talk about a new

  169. year a new beginning what we really want is a

  170. new situation I want out. I want out. God, get

  171. me out. Get me out of this debt. But what

  172. if God wants to get in your budget? I'm just

  173. trying to preach something helpful.

  174. Because I don't want.

  175. You to watch the dot disappear, go home, wake up

  176. with a headache, and think nothing happened. No, it's not

  177. what happens at midnight. It's what happened after midnight. When

  178. Paul said, I know you were expecting me to get out,

  179. but I didn't come to Philippi to get out. I

  180. came to Philippi to get the gospel in.

  181. Paul wasn't trying to get out.

  182. He was trying to bring the word of God in.

  183. I bought three people.

  184. To bring it in, bring it in, bring it in,

  185. bring it in.

  186. Bring it in. I'm not just trying to get out

  187. of a sad situation. I bring it in my joy.

  188. I'm not just trying to get out of a hard situation.

  189. I bring it in God's strength. Bring it in.

  190. Bring it in. Bring it in.

  191. Bring it in.

  192. I'm bringing it in. I'm not getting out.

  193. I came to Philippi to preach, and now I've got

  194. a captive audience.

  195. Don't kill yourself, Mr. prison guard.

  196. I know you were supposed to be guarding me, but

  197. what happens when the one who was a hostage becomes

  198. the host? And Paul turns around and says, don't worry

  199. about it. I've got good news for you. Paul saw

  200. an opportunity. Paul didn't see an open prison door. He

  201. saw an open door for the gospel. I want to

  202. declare over your life.

  203. There is an open door of opportunity. Hey, thank you
