  1. Heavenly Father,

  2. You created the world by Your Word.

  3. !

  4. You created the world by Your Word.

  5. ! You make the dead live by Your Word.

  6. Your Son, Jesus Christ, our precious Lord, His incarnate Word.

  7. So Lord, we realize that we can't take the study of Your Word too seriously.

  8. And it's my heart, my prayer this afternoon that You would equip every single one of my

  9. dear brothers and sisters here.

  10. That they might cherish Your Word more.

  11. That might know how to study Your Word more deeply.

  12. To gain greater faith and confidence in the authority, the reliability of Your Word.

  13. So to that end, please help us by Your Holy Spirit.

  14. Give us minds to ask questions, to understand, and to apply what we're learning.

  15. That it will serve these dear brothers and sisters for the rest of their lives.

  16. Amen.

  17. We depend on You, Lord.

  18. I can't do nothing apart from You.

  19. So help me.

  20. So help me.

  21. In Jesus' name we pray.

  22. Amen.

  24. You have it, Jason?

  25. You look like you had it for a while.

  26. Why don't you go ahead and read it?

  27. 2 Timothy 3, verse 16.

    2 Timothy 3:16

  28. All scriptures breathed out by God

  29. are profitable for teaching, for reproof,

  30. for correction, and for training in righteousness.

  31. The man of God may be complete,

  32. and equipped for every career.

  33. Can you go ahead and read 15 as well?

  34. Yeah.

  35. And how from childhood

  36. you have been acquainted with the sacred writings,

  37. which are able to make you wise for salvation

  38. through faith in Christ Jesus?

  39. So, this is the most significant text

  40. on the authority of Scripture itself

  41. and why it's so significant in the life of a believer.

  42. And verse 15 gives us one main reason.

  43. It's that the sacred writings are able

  44. to make us wise for salvation

  45. through faith in Christ Jesus.

  46. It's not the Bible itself that saves us, right?

  47. We don't worship the Bible.

  48. We worship Jesus.

  49. We worship God.

  50. But the Bible is the means that God has appointed

  51. through which we come to encounter and meet Jesus.

  52. Right?

  53. Because we have...

  54. No one comes to saving faith

  55. from simply examining the historical facts

  56. and looking at the death and resurrection of Jesus

  57. and then saying,

  58. oh, that must be God's way of saving us.

  59. You need a theological interpretation

  60. of that historical fact.

  61. How do you just,

  62. from looking at the fact that Jesus died on the cross

  63. and was raised from the dead,

  64. know that that was for our atonement,

  65. that that's for our vindication and justification.

  66. You don't know that

  67. unless you have an authoritative interpretation of that.

  68. And so that's what Scripture provides for us.

  69. And that's why Scripture is so important

  70. for missions work.

  71. Translating work is so important.

  72. And that's why even in like areas

  73. where there's hardly no gospel access at all

  74. and you read stories of missionaries

  75. and of how people come to faith in those areas,

  76. often they'll see a vision from the Lord

  77. telling them where they can get a Bible,

  78. where they can meet a Christian,

  79. direct them to a Bible.

  80. And it's through the Word that God reveals Himself.

  81. And so the Scriptures are the ways

  82. that God has appointed to make us wise

  83. for salvation through faith in Christ.

  84. So that's one very, very important reason.

  85. And then the second reason is given

  86. in the verses 16 to 17.

  87. All Scripture is breathed out by God

  88. and profitable for teaching,

  89. for reproof, for correction,

  90. and for training in righteousness

  91. that the man of God may be complete,

  92. equipped for every good work.

  93. And I think people sometimes,

  94. do you do any more seats?

  95. You guys good?

  96. I think we can, in case more people come,

  97. let me just separate this out here.

  98. Oh, you guys head down.

  99. Get some nice times together.

  100. Bye, Ziya.

  101. Bye.

  102. Sometimes people make the mistake of thinking

  103. that inspiration,

  104. that the Spirit,

  105. it resides with the people

  106. who wrote the books permanently

  107. rather than the Scripture books themselves,

  108. the writings themselves.

  109. In a similar way,

  110. we think about how, you know,

  111. someone's inspired performance.

  112. We say, like,

  113. the Christian writers were inspired

  114. to write these things.

  115. Well, of course,

  116. the Spirit of God inspired them

  117. and helped them to write it.

  118. But the end product,

  119. the Scriptures,

  120. what is written,

  121. the graphe,

  122. the writings themselves,

  123. all Scriptures,

  124. are breathed out by God.

  125. And what do you guys think that means?

  126. I have a question.

  127. Yeah, Tony, go ahead.

  128. I think I asked it in the first version class.

  129. Yeah.

  130. I didn't understand.

  131. Wait, first what class?

  132. The first version class.

  133. No, first class, okay.

  134. So it says,

  135. it says, like,

  136. to make you wise to tell a mission,

  137. but the preceding,

  138. preceding versus

  139. from infancy,

  140. you have known the Scriptures.

  141. So this,

  142. the Scripture is

  143. before the compilation

  144. of the New Testament

  145. that he's referring to.

  146. Yes.

  147. So I guess, like,

  148. how can we say that

  149. it's the entire current Bible

  150. that these are the verses

  151. that it's applying

  152. to what we have right now?

  153. Yeah, yeah.

  154. That's a great question.

  155. So that's a little bit,

  156. I'll talk about it a little bit

  157. because it's an important question,

  158. but it's a little bit

  159. outside the preview

  160. of what I was going to talk about.

  161. So Tony's question,

  162. just so you guys could hear me

  163. if you didn't hear him.

  164. This was clearly

  165. before the completion of the canon,

  166. before the New Testament

  167. was codified.

  168. And so it's,

  169. when it says all Scripture,

  170. how do we know

  171. that it includes the New Testament

  172. and not only,

  173. not just the Hebrew Old Testament

  174. through Scripture,

  175. which is a good question.

  176. If you turn to 2 Peter,

  177. 2 Peter 3,

    2 Peter 3:15–16

  178. verses 15 to 16.

  179. It says,

  180. So we have a clear instance here

  181. of Apostle Peter

  182. referring to the writings of Paul

  183. as the Scriptures

  184. because he compares it

  185. to the other Scriptures

  186. because it's showing

  187. that he considers them

  188. to be authoritative.

  189. If you turn to 1 Timothy 5,

    1 Timothy 5:18

  190. verse 18.

  191. It's in the context

  192. of talking about how

  193. the church ought to treat elders

  194. and those elders who rule well

  195. should be considered worthy

  196. of double honor,

  197. especially those labor

  198. and teaching and teaching.

  199. And then he cites the Scriptures.

  200. He says,

  201. For the Scripture says,

  202. You shall not muzzle an ox

  203. when it treads out the grain.

  204. Do you guys know

  205. where that comes from?

  206. Deuteronomy.

  207. Yeah.

  208. So that's from

  209. the Old Testament Scriptures.

  210. But what about the next one?

  211. And the laborer

  212. deserves his wages.

  213. So that comes from

  214. Matthew 10.10.

  215. So that's actually

  216. Jesus' words.

  217. The things that Jesus said

  218. and taught

  219. and probably the tradition

  220. of the Gospels

  221. circulating at the time.

  222. And he's citing that

  223. already as Scripture

  224. on par with the same authority

  225. as the Old Testament Scriptures.

  226. Right?

  227. And so there's some

  228. definitive clues

  229. in the Scriptures

  230. that tell us that

  231. the New Testament

  232. is considered authoritative

  233. as much as

  234. the Old Testament.

  235. Does that answer

  236. your question

  237. someone, Tony?

  238. If you have further questions,

  239. I think I'll question.

  240. I think I'll read it.

  241. But I have more questions later.

  242. Okay.

  243. Okay.

  244. That's fine.

  245. And that's why

  246. it's important to recognize

  247. also that it's the

  248. New Testament apostles

  249. who are in the same

  250. authoritative tradition

  251. as the Old Testament

  252. Scripture writing prophets.

  253. It's the apostles

  254. who have the authority

  255. as Jesus promised

  256. and I will bring to remembrance

  257. by the Spirit

  258. everything that I taught you.

  259. And they're the ones

  260. recorded reliably for us.

  261. And so all of Scripture,

  262. I'd say,

  263. both Old and New Testament,

  264. 66 books of the Bible,

  265. 39 in the Old Testament,

  266. 27 in the New Testament

  267. are inspired by God.

  268. Inspired meaning

  269. breathed out by God.

  270. Meaning God's spoken.

  271. And it says that

  272. it's able to equip us

  273. for every good work.

  274. That means it's sufficient

  275. for us to be able

  276. to become the kind of Christians

  277. that God wants us to be.

  278. You don't need

  279. additional information.

  280. You don't need

  281. additional

  282. books even.

  283. That's why

  284. I know sometimes

  285. we recommend books

  286. and we say to people,

  287. well, that's a must read.

  288. Biblically,

  289. there's no must read book

  290. except for the Bible.

  291. For the Christian truly,

  292. there's just the only

  293. must read book

  294. because everything

  295. you need to know

  296. is already in here.

  297. And that sufficiency

  298. is very free.

  299. You know,

  300. and if there's something

  301. that you're wondering

  302. in your life about,

  303. you have questions about,

  304. and you don't really know

  305. what God wants you to do,

  306. and you search the scriptures

  307. diligently and scripture

  308. says nothing about it,

  309. then there's an area

  310. where you can exercise

  311. freedom of conscience.

  312. If God hasn't told you

  313. in scriptures about it,

  314. then you don't have to know.

  315. And within the wisdom

  316. that you derive

  317. from God's word,

  318. you make the best decision

  319. you can.

  320. And you just seek

  321. to honor the Lord in that.

  322. Now,

  323. that's where we get

  324. the term inspiration

  325. of scripture.

  326. It's talking about

  327. how God's the one

  328. who breathed it.

  329. He's the one who spoke it.

  330. And as people

  331. who take the Bible

  332. seriously in that way,

  333. that God himself

  334. spoke these words,

  335. we obviously can't

  336. tamper with God's word.

  337. And we need to make sure

  338. that the word

  339. that we are studying

  340. is the word

  341. that God intended

  342. to be written,

  343. which is why

  344. the idea of establishing

  345. the text

  346. and choosing good translations

  347. and knowing that

  348. you're working

  349. with the right passage

  350. is so important.

  351. But how do we know

  352. that the scriptures

  353. authoritate?

  354. You guys have any ideas?

  355. Because he said it.

  356. Because what?

  357. He said it.

  358. Besides the fact

  359. that he said

  360. it was authoritative,

  361. we know it really is.

  362. Yeah, Jesus said

  363. it is authoritative, right?

  364. And he quotes it

  365. as authoritative.

  366. Okay, I thought

  367. there was another answer.

  368. That's the answer?

  369. Yeah.

  370. No, that's a good answer.

  371. That's a good answer.

  372. That Jesus said it

  373. is good enough for me.

  374. But how do we know

  375. Jesus said it?

  376. Because it's in the Bible.

  377. Well, it's in the Bible.

  378. So how do we know

  379. that what's in the Bible

  380. is authoritative?

  381. If that's what...

  382. That's where Jesus tells us

  383. that scripture is authoritative.

  384. You guys see what I'm asking?

  385. Mm-hmm.

  386. You have to believe

  387. that someone wrote down

  388. that someone did write

  389. about Jesus' words accurately.

  390. Okay, yeah.

  391. So maybe you're saying

  392. you need to believe

  393. that someone wrote down

  394. Jesus' words accurately.

  395. Jason, what were you going to say?

  396. Are you trying to get

  397. at like let the scripture

  398. enter the scripture?

  399. Yeah, so there's a principle

  400. that we call this

  401. that the scripture

  402. is self-authenticating.

  403. And in 1 Thessalonians 2.13

  404. it says,

  405. We also thank God

  406. constantly for this

  407. that when you receive

  408. the word of God

  409. Oh, do I have something here?

  410. Yeah.

  411. When you receive

  412. the word of God

  413. which you heard from us

  414. you accepted it

  415. not as the word of men

  416. but as what it really is

  417. the word of God

  418. which is at work

  419. in you believers.

  420. Right?

  421. Much like

  422. 2 Timothy 3.16 and 17

  423. when Paul simply said

  424. all scripture is breathed out

  425. by God

  426. and these are scriptures

  427. there's no proof here

  428. that scripture is authoritative.

  429. They don't offer

  430. that kind of proof.

  431. They just take for granted

  432. that when God speaks

  433. that people will receive

  434. those scriptures

  435. as God's word

  436. and not as the words of men.

  437. Right?

  438. And if you look at

  439. Hebrews 6.13

  440. it says,

  441. Since God

  442. had no one greater

  443. by whom to swear

  444. he swore by himself.

  445. This is

  446. I'm getting at that idea

  447. that the Bible

  448. is the final authority.

  449. It's the ultimate authority.

  450. When you're a student

  451. in grad school

  452. writing a paper

  453. then you need to cite

  454. your proper authorities.

  455. Right?

  456. But if you are

  457. the authority

  458. on the subject

  459. you don't cite

  460. other people

  461. because you're

  462. the authority.

  463. You speak on it

  464. authoritatively.

  465. Right?

  466. God speaks

  467. on his own authority

  468. and no one else

  469. can establish his authority

  470. and so the word of God

  471. itself is

  472. the final authority

  473. and that has to have

  474. self-authenticating authority.

  475. And this is so important

  476. because until you have

  477. you could establish

  478. that the Bible

  479. and the doctrines

  480. taught in it

  481. is fully credible

  482. as the word of God.

  483. Until you have

  484. know beyond a shadow

  485. of doubt

  486. that God

  487. is the author

  488. of these words

  489. it's not going to have

  490. the full intended effect

  491. in the application

  492. in our lives.

  493. But isn't that

  494. circular reasoning?

  495. Right?

  496. Scripture is God's

  497. authoritative word.

  498. How do you know that?

  499. Well because Scripture says

  500. it's God's authoritative word.

  501. But why is Scripture

  502. authoritative?

  503. Well because it's God's word.

  504. Right?

  505. How do you know that?

  506. Because Scripture says so.

  507. Right?

  508. It's like a circular

  509. reasoning.

  510. The logic uses

  511. its own conclusion

  512. as evidence

  513. to prove itself

  514. which makes it circular.

  515. But because our God

  516. is triune

  517. and this logic

  518. isn't viciously circular.

  519. And this is where

  520. the importance

  521. of the Holy Spirit

  522. and his testimony

  523. comes in.

  524. Look at John 10

  525. 2-3

  526. and says

  527. The sheep hear

  528. the shepherd's voice

  529. and he calls

  530. his own sheep

  531. by name

  532. and leads them out.

  533. The sheep follow him

  534. for they know

  535. his voice.

  536. How do the sheep

  537. follow the right voice?

  538. God simply says

  539. the sheep know

  540. his voice.

  541. They know how

  542. to recognize

  543. his voice.

  544. 1 Corinthians 2

  545. 12-14

  546. says

  547. Now we have received

  548. not the spirit

  549. of the world

  550. but the spirit

  551. who is from God

  552. that we might

  553. understand the things

  554. freely given us

  555. by God

  556. and we impart this

  557. in words

  558. not taught by

  559. human wisdom

  560. but taught by

  561. the spirit

  562. interpreting spiritual

  563. truths to those

  564. who are spiritual.

  565. The natural person

  566. does not accept

  567. the things

  568. of the spirit of God

  569. for they are

  570. folly to him

  571. and he is not

  572. able to understand

  573. them because

  574. they are spiritually

  575. discerned.

  576. So it's the spirit

  577. of God himself

  578. who confirms

  579. to us that

  580. what is objectively

  581. the word of God

  582. the written scriptures

  583. is God's word.

  584. So the trying

  585. God is working

  586. in intent

  587. for the father

  588. the father speaks

  589. the word

  590. he's the one

  591. that breathes

  592. out the word

  593. Jesus is the

  594. incarnate word

  595. and the spirit

  596. is the one

  597. who attests

  598. to this

  599. and confirms

  600. this in our

  601. hearts

  602. and that's why

  603. unless the spirit

  604. of God removes

  605. the veil

  606. that's over

  607. our hearts

  608. and unless

  609. the spirit

  610. of God

  611. shines into

  612. our hearts

  613. the light

  614. of the knowledge

  615. of the glory

  616. of God

  617. in the face

  618. of Jesus Christ

  619. it says

  620. in 2 Corinthians 3-4

  621. that we cannot

  622. see the glory

  623. of Christ

  624. we cannot

  625. understand

  626. it and grasp

  627. it.

  628. So then there

  629. is an objective

  630. dimension

  631. to the inspiration

  632. and the authority

  633. of God's word

  634. and there is a

  635. subjective dimension

  636. to it.

  637. The objective

  638. dimension

  639. it is objectively

  640. the authoritative

  641. word of God

  642. the written word

  643. but it is

  644. subjectively

  645. confirmed as

  646. truth

  647. as God's word

  648. by the Holy Spirit

  649. in our hearts

  650. and this is important

  651. both of these things

  652. are important

  653. because on the one

  654. hand

  655. the objective

  656. dimension

  657. that the scripture

  658. is objectively

  659. God's written

  660. word

  661. helps us

  662. to steer clear

  663. of radical

  664. individualism

  665. and you see

  666. that in certain

  667. evangelical circles

  668. where people say

  669. things like

  670. well I

  671. determine my own

  672. truth

  673. whatever I say

  674. whatever my

  675. interpretation

  676. whatever my

  677. spiritual experience

  678. is that's truth

  679. that kind of idea

  680. that radical

  681. individualism

  682. is very prevailing

  683. in our culture

  684. you probably heard

  685. things like

  686. live your truth

  687. speak your truth

  688. create your own

  689. reality

  690. but you can't

  691. do that

  692. if scripture

  693. is God's

  694. objective word

  695. then we have

  696. to submit

  697. to it

  698. we have to

  699. subordinate

  700. all our

  701. priorities

  702. and purposes

  703. and desires

  704. and thoughts

  705. to it

  706. on the other

  707. hand

  708. the subjective

  709. dimension

  710. helps us

  711. to steer

  712. clear of

  713. what I might

  714. call

  715. Catholic

  716. institutionalism

  717. which says

  718. that the church

  719. determines truth

  720. right

  721. individual

  722. Christians

  723. cannot be

  724. left to

  725. interpret

  726. scripture

  727. and determine

  728. truth for

  729. themselves

  730. that would

  731. render

  732. Christianity

  733. subjective

  734. and so for

  735. the sake

  736. of certainty

  737. and uniformity

  738. only the church

  739. the institutional

  740. church

  741. can determine

  742. truth

  743. but what

  744. of the fact

  745. that the church

  746. itself

  747. has erred

  748. and misinterpreted

  749. scripture

  750. throughout history

  751. that the

  752. popes themselves

  753. have done

  754. that

  755. and 1st

  756. John 2

  757. 27

  758. says

  759. but the

  760. anointing

  761. that you

  762. receive from

  763. him abides

  764. in you

  765. and you

  766. have no

  767. need

  768. that anyone

  769. should teach

  770. you

  771. but as

  772. anointing

  773. teaches you

  774. about everything

  775. and is true

  776. and is no

  777. lie

  778. just as it

  779. has taught

  780. you

  781. abide

  782. in him

  783. right

  784. this is

  785. a radical

  786. teaching

  787. that all

  788. of us

  789. when we

  790. are regenerated

  791. we have

  792. the indwelling

  793. spirit

  794. who enables

  795. us to

  796. discern

  797. truth

  798. who confirms

  799. the truth

  800. of God

  801. into our

  802. hearts

  803. so we

  804. can learn

  805. the Christians

  806. who are

  807. submitted

  808. to the

  809. objective

  810. authority

  811. of God's

  812. word

  813. who are

  814. guided

  815. by the

  816. inward

  817. testimony

  818. of the

  819. Holy Spirit

  820. who indwells

  821. them

  822. are capable

  823. of discerning

  824. the truth

  825. and it's

  826. this conviction

  827. that makes

  828. reformed

  829. Protestants

  830. like us

  831. eager to

  832. put this

  833. Bible

  834. in the

  835. hands

  836. of every

  837. Christian

  838. you don't

  839. see that

  840. kind of

  841. same impulse

  842. in Catholic

  843. circles

  844. and you

  845. definitely

  846. haven't seen

  847. that throughout

  848. history

  849. throughout

  850. church

  851. history

  852. look at

  853. all the

  854. major

  855. Bible

  856. labs

  857. that you

  858. guys

  859. have

  860. on

  861. your

  862. phones

  863. almost

  864. certainly

  865. every

  866. single

  867. one of

  868. the ones

  869. that are

  870. most

  871. used

  872. they all

  873. have

  874. Protestant

  875. evangelical

  876. origin

  877. it's because

  878. of this

  879. reformed

  880. Protestant

  881. conviction

  882. this is

  883. not to

  884. say

  885. the church

  886. or those

  887. who occupy

  888. its teaching

  889. office

  890. the elders

  891. have no

  892. authority

  893. they do

  894. have

  895. authority

  896. and the

  897. church

  898. tradition

  899. and the

  900. creeds

  901. do have

  902. authority

  903. for that

  904. reason

  905. the creeds

  906. of church

  907. tradition

  908. like the

  909. Nicene

  910. Creed

  911. Apostles

  912. Creed

  913. Chasedonian

  914. Creed

  915. these are

  916. all important

  917. for our

  918. history

  919. but we

  920. call them

  921. in Latin

  922. norma

  923. normata

  924. which means

  925. they are

  926. a rule

  927. that is

  928. ruled

  929. and whereas

  930. with scripture

  931. we call it

  932. norma

  933. normins

  934. it's a

  935. rule

  936. that

  937. rules

  938. so yes

  939. creeds

  940. church

  941. authorities

  942. tradition

  943. have

  944. authority

  945. to a

  946. certain

  947. degree

  948. but that

  949. authority

  950. is always

  951. subordinated

  952. to the

  953. authority

  954. of scripture

  955. it's a

  956. rule

  957. that is

  958. rule

  959. and this

  960. is a

  961. key

  962. distinction

  963. because

  964. the

  965. Catholic

  966. church

  967. for example

  968. claims

  969. that they

  970. have

  971. magisterial

  972. authority

  973. they claim

  974. to be

  975. the

  976. magisterium

  977. and that

  978. comes from

  979. the Latin

  980. word

  981. magister

  982. which means

  983. master

  984. meaning

  985. that

  986. according

  987. to them

  988. the Catholic

  989. church

  990. has

  991. master

  992. like

  993. authority

  994. to determine

  995. this is

  996. what scripture

  997. means

  998. this is

  999. what it

  1000. says

  1001. everybody

  1002. who disagrees

  1003. is wrong

  1004. they have

  1005. the magisterium

  1006. but Protestants

  1007. would argue

  1008. that no

  1009. the church

  1010. does not

  1011. have

  1012. magisterial

  1013. authority

  1014. they only

  1015. have

  1016. ministerial

  1017. authority

  1018. the church

  1019. is a

  1020. servant

  1021. of the

  1022. word

  1023. and as

  1024. an elder

  1025. as a

  1026. pastor

  1027. who

  1028. occupies

  1029. the teaching

  1030. office

  1031. I am

  1032. a servant

  1033. of the

  1034. word

  1035. I don't

  1036. get to

  1037. give a

  1038. decisive

  1039. interpretation

  1040. that everybody

  1041. must agree

  1042. with

  1043. people contest

  1044. that

  1045. like the

  1046. Bereans

  1047. in Acts

  1048. contest

  1049. that

  1050. is it

  1051. actually in

  1052. accordance

  1053. with the

  1054. scriptures

  1055. and so I

  1056. have a

  1057. subordinate

  1058. a servant

  1059. like role

  1060. which is what

  1061. minister means

  1062. servant

  1063. so Lucas

  1064. did you have

  1065. a question

  1066. yeah

  1067. yeah

  1068. great question

  1069. so Lucas's

  1070. question is

  1071. about

  1072. apocrypha

  1073. books that

  1074. they have

  1075. added to

  1076. what we

  1077. hold as

  1078. canon

  1079. as a

  1080. Protestant

  1081. canon

  1082. how does

  1083. that work

  1084. so

  1085. apocrypha

  1086. just comes from

  1087. the Greek

  1088. word means

  1089. hidden away

  1090. it means

  1091. that the

  1092. origin of

  1093. their origin

  1094. is unknown

  1095. we don't know

  1096. who wrote

  1097. them

  1098. and that's

  1099. partly why

  1100. they're

  1101. questioned

  1102. did the

  1103. apostles

  1104. or their

  1105. cultists

  1106. like Luke

  1107. and Mark

  1108. actually write

  1109. them

  1110. or not

  1111. and

  1112. it's not

  1113. true that

  1114. Martin Luther

  1115. just kind

  1116. of

  1117. picked

  1118. because

  1119. the canon

  1120. that we

  1121. have

  1122. the 66

  1123. books of

  1124. the Bible

  1125. actually

  1126. is the

  1127. most ancient

  1128. canon

  1129. it's the

  1130. ones that

  1131. were historically

  1132. and universally

  1133. accepted

  1134. by the

  1135. historical

  1136. church

  1137. and so

  1138. even if

  1139. you look

  1140. at

  1141. probably

  1142. the best

  1143. Catholic

  1144. biblical

  1145. scholar

  1146. in history

  1147. is Jerome

  1148. he's the

  1149. one who

  1150. single-handedly

  1151. translated

  1152. Latin

  1153. Vulgate

  1154. from the

  1155. original

  1156. languages

  1157. and in

  1158. the introduction

  1159. to the

  1160. Latin

  1161. Vulgate

  1162. Jerome

  1163. sets apart

  1164. the apocrypha

  1165. as not

  1166. canon

  1167. and so

  1168. this is

  1169. separated

  1170. from canon

  1171. if you look

  1172. at the

  1173. Jews

  1174. and the

  1175. Old Testament

  1176. writings

  1177. you look

  1178. at the

  1179. way

  1180. the Dead

  1181. Sea Scrolls

  1182. were preserved

  1183. the scriptures

  1184. that we

  1185. hold from

  1186. the Old

  1187. Testament

  1188. are preserved

  1189. in these

  1190. ornate

  1191. fonts

  1192. in this

  1193. really

  1194. secure

  1195. containments

  1196. within your

  1197. compartments

  1198. whereas the

  1199. apocrypha

  1200. are not

  1201. given that

  1202. kind of

  1203. treatment

  1204. in terms

  1205. of scroll

  1206. the Jews

  1207. clearly made

  1208. that distinction

  1209. and the Jews

  1210. were the ones

  1211. who to whom

  1212. God entrusted

  1213. the stewardship

  1214. of the Old

  1215. Testament

  1216. canon

  1217. and so

  1218. the way

  1219. we have it

  1220. from the Jews

  1221. the way we

  1222. have it

  1223. throughout church

  1224. history is

  1225. what we

  1226. have to

  1227. be in 66

  1228. books of

  1229. Bible

  1230. so

  1231. I've

  1232. answered

  1233. a

  1234. ask your

  1235. pastors

  1236. question

  1237. on that

  1238. and I

  1239. can

  1240. I'm happy

  1241. to send

  1242. you a

  1243. more detailed

  1244. answer to

  1245. that I

  1246. will

  1247. if you

  1248. guys are

  1249. interested

  1250. in reading

  1251. that

  1252. yeah

  1253. Tony go

  1254. ahead

  1255. yeah

  1256. yeah

  1257. we don't

  1258. know

  1259. exactly

  1260. who

  1261. wrote

  1262. Hebrews

  1263. some

  1264. people

  1265. say

  1266. maybe

  1267. it was

  1268. Apollo

  1269. or maybe

  1270. it's

  1271. however

  1272. it was

  1273. because

  1274. it was

  1275. historically

  1276. accepted

  1277. the

  1278. kind of

  1279. criteria

  1280. of

  1281. canonicity

  1282. that was

  1283. used

  1284. in church

  1285. history

  1286. maybe

  1287. by

  1288. the

  1289. formulated

  1290. by

  1291. Vincent

  1292. of

  1293. Lawrence

  1294. is that

  1295. it has

  1296. to have

  1297. been

  1298. accepted

  1299. by

  1300. all

  1301. Christians

  1302. in all

  1303. places

  1304. at all

  1305. times

  1306. and

  1307. that's

  1308. the

  1309. and

  1310. this

  1311. Hebrews

  1312. can hold

  1313. that claim

  1314. better than

  1315. any of

  1316. the

  1317. apocryphal

  1318. books

  1319. and

  1320. the

  1321. pseudepigrapha

  1322. is like

  1323. another

  1324. category

  1325. of books

  1326. that sometimes

  1327. people study

  1328. but

  1329. pseudepigrapha

  1330. are like

  1331. known

  1332. forgeries

  1333. like they

  1334. claim to

  1335. be

  1336. an author

  1337. that they

  1338. are not

  1339. like

  1340. book of

  1341. Enoch

  1342. claims to

  1343. be written

  1344. by Enoch

  1345. but it's

  1346. not by

  1347. Enoch

  1348. the

  1349. assumption

  1350. of

  1351. Moses

  1352. right

  1353. it's

  1354. like

  1355. these

  1356. are

  1357. not

  1358. actual

  1359. canon

  1360. apocrypha

  1361. is not

  1362. canon

  1363. either

  1364. but

  1365. those

  1366. are

  1367. even

  1368. more

  1369. suspect

  1370. than

  1371. the

  1372. apocrypha

  1373. yeah

  1374. go ahead

  1375. for us

  1376. is it accurate

  1377. that all

  1378. of scripture

  1379. speaks

  1380. of each

  1381. other

  1382. like

  1383. the

  1384. old

  1385. testament

  1386. all

  1387. has a

  1388. link

  1389. to

  1390. the

  1391. new

  1392. testament

  1393. and

  1394. the

  1395. new

  1396. testament

  1397. all

  1398. has a

  1399. link

  1400. to

  1401. the

  1402. old

  1403. so

  1404. they

  1405. are

  1406. intertwined

  1407. they

  1408. are

  1409. and that's

  1410. not

  1411. the

  1412. case

  1413. with the

  1414. mentioned

  1415. like

  1416. the

  1417. scriptures

  1418. not

  1419. quoted

  1420. like

  1421. the

  1422. scriptures

  1423. throughout

  1424. the

  1425. new

  1426. testament

  1427. there

  1428. is

  1429. in

  1430. jude

  1431. second

  1432. pheter

  1433. there

  1434. is

  1435. mention

  1436. of

  1437. some

  1438. random

  1439. things

  1440. from

  1441. the

  1442. pseudepigrapha

  1443. but it's

  1444. not quoted

  1445. as

  1446. scripture

  1447. in the

  1448. same way

  1449. Paul quotes

  1450. Greek

  1451. philosophers

  1452. in

  1453. act

  1454. 17

  1455. it quotes

  1456. these things

  1457. sometimes

  1458. but it's

  1459. never quoted

  1460. as

  1461. scripture

  1462. whereas

  1463. the 66

  1464. books

  1465. that we

  1466. have

  1467. repeatedly

  1468. over and

  1469. over again

  1470. consistently

  1471. cited

  1472. as

  1473. scripture

  1474. in the

  1475. testament

  1476. so

  1477. that's

  1478. another

  1479. really

  1480. strong

  1481. evidence

  1482. for that

  1483. I'm just

  1484. kind of

  1485. like

  1486. this is

  1487. just

  1488. the

  1489. intro

  1490. guys

  1491. why

  1492. do we

  1493. want to

  1494. study

  1495. the

  1496. bible

  1497. that's

  1498. why

  1499. there's

  1500. no

  1501. competition

  1502. to

  1503. nothing

  1504. more

  1505. important

  1506. than

  1507. to

  1508. study

  1509. than

  1510. the

  1511. scriptures

  1512. for us

  1513. the

  1514. text

  1515. that we

  1516. have

  1517. is

  1518. very

  1519. authoritative

  1520. I'll

  1521. kind of

  1522. blaze

  1523. through

  1524. this

  1525. because

  1526. I think

  1527. I feel

  1528. like I have

  1529. a lot of

  1530. time right

  1531. now

  1532. but

  1533. it always

  1534. turns out

  1535. that I

  1536. don't have

  1537. enough

  1538. time

  1539. there

  1540. and so

  1541. I'm

  1542. just

  1543. going to

  1544. anticipate

  1545. that

  1546. and then

  1547. kind of

  1548. breeze

  1549. through

  1550. this

  1551. where

  1552. you know

  1553. I mean

  1554. how many of

  1555. you guys

  1556. have seen

  1557. Odyssey

  1558. recently

  1559. yeah

  1560. it's

  1561. a

  1562. controversial

  1563. film

  1564. I know

  1565. but

  1566. I'm

  1567. a

  1568. classic

  1569. major

  1570. how many of

  1571. you guys

  1572. have read

  1573. it

  1574. yay

  1575. !

  1576. so

  1577. Homer's Odyssey

  1578. was written

  1579. in the 8th

  1580. century

  1581. BC

  1582. it's one

  1583. of the

  1584. best

  1585. preserved

  1586. ancient

  1587. literature

  1588. because

  1589. it was

  1590. so

  1591. beloved

  1592. and so

  1593. popular

  1594. and so

  1595. but

  1596. even for

  1597. this

  1598. best

  1599. preserved

  1600. ancient

  1601. documents

  1602. there's

  1603. only

  1604. about

  1605. thousand

  1606. ancient

  1607. manuscripts

  1608. of it

  1609. before the

  1610. advent

  1611. of the

  1612. printing

  1613. press

  1614. and

  1615. then

  1616. the

  1617. oldest

  1618. surviving

  1619. fragment

  1620. of it

  1621. which

  1622. is

  1623. only

  1624. about

  1625. a

  1626. paragraph

  1627. is

  1628. from

  1629. the

  1630. 3rd

  1631. century

  1632. BC

  1633. which

  1634. is

  1635. five

  1636. you know

  1637. you know

  1638. which

  1639. many

  1640. years

  1641. hundreds

  1642. of years

  1643. removed

  1644. from the

  1645. original

  1646. manuscript

  1647. this

  1648. is

  1649. the

  1650. earliest

  1651. full

  1652. text

  1653. of the

  1654. Odyssey

  1655. is dated

  1656. to the

  1657. 10th

  1658. century

  1659. AD

  1660. which

  1661. is

  1662. like

  1663. 1700

  1664. years

  1665. removed

  1666. from the

  1667. original

  1668. manuscript

  1669. if you

  1670. compare

  1671. other ancient

  1672. manuscripts

  1673. that we

  1674. have

  1675. that people

  1676. teach

  1677. this is

  1678. what

  1679. Homer

  1680. wrote

  1681. this is

  1682. what

  1683. Caesar

  1684. wrote

  1685. the

  1686. Gallic

  1687. War

  1688. they

  1689. don't

  1690. have

  1691. nearly

  1692. as

  1693. many

  1694. attestations

  1695. but

  1696. you

  1697. contrast

  1698. that

  1699. with

  1700. the

  1701. scriptures

  1702. and

  1703. we

  1704. have

  1705. 5801

  1706. Greek

  1707. manuscripts

  1708. not even

  1709. that's not even

  1710. counting the

  1711. ancient

  1712. like handwritten

  1713. manuscript

  1714. translations

  1715. there is

  1716. if you

  1717. if you

  1718. count more

  1719. there's

  1720. 10,000

  1721. Latin

  1722. manuscripts

  1723. !

  1724. 9,300

  1725. manuscripts

  1726. in other

  1727. languages

  1728. like Syriac

  1729. and Coptic

  1730. a whopping

  1731. total of

  1732. 25,000

  1733. manuscripts

  1734. so we

  1735. have a

  1736. very

  1737. very

  1738. good

  1739. idea

  1740. that

  1741. the

  1742. scriptures

  1743. that

  1744. we

  1745. have

  1746. is

  1747. exactly

  1748. what

  1749. was

  1750. originally

  1751. written

  1752. and

  1753. the

  1754. earliest

  1755. Greek

  1756. manuscript

  1757. that we

  1758. have

  1759. is

  1760. the

  1761. Gospel

  1762. of

  1763. John

  1764. and

  1765. it's

  1766. dated

  1767. around

  1768. 125

  1769. 80

  1770. which is

  1771. like

  1772. 50

  1773. years

  1774. removed

  1775. from

  1776. its

  1777. original

  1778. authorship

  1779. and

  1780. so

  1781. the

  1782. art

  1783. or the

  1784. study

  1785. of

  1786. determining

  1787. which

  1788. texts

  1789. are

  1790. original

  1791. what should

  1792. be in

  1793. the

  1794. scriptures

  1795. is

  1796. called

  1797. textual

  1798. criticism

  1799. and

  1800. we

  1801. have

  1802. benefited

  1803. from

  1804. really

  1805. hard

  1806. work

  1807. by

  1808. many

  1809. scholars

  1810. so

  1811. like

  1812. a

  1813. very

  1814. renowned

  1815. scholar

  1816. named

  1817. F.J.

  1818. Hort

  1819. was a

  1820. textuals

  1821. critic

  1822. according

  1823. to his

  1824. lifetime

  1825. research

  1826. and study

  1827. he says

  1828. he concluded

  1829. that

  1830. not more

  1831. than

  1832. one

  1833. thousandth

  1834. part

  1835. of the

  1836. whole

  1837. New

  1838. Testament

  1839. is

  1840. affected

  1841. by

  1842. differences

  1843. of

  1844. reading

  1845. like

  1846. 0.1

  1847. percent

  1848. and

  1849. the

  1850. Old

  1851. Testament

  1852. though

  1853. not as

  1854. well

  1855. attested

  1856. New

  1857. Testament

  1858. because

  1859. it's

  1860. more

  1861. ancient

  1862. is

  1863. better

  1864. attested

  1865. than

  1866. any

  1867. of

  1868. the

  1869. other

  1870. ancient

  1871. contemporaries

  1872. there are

  1873. about

  1874. 11,000

  1875. Old

  1876. Testament

  1877. manuscripts

  1878. and

  1879. the

  1880. mesoretic

  1881. text

  1882. is

  1883. the

  1884. complete

  1885. Hebrew

  1886. Bible

  1887. that

  1888. the

  1889. Jews

  1890. use

  1891. which

  1892. is

  1893. the

  1894. basis

  1895. of

  1896. our

  1897. English

  1898. Bibles

  1899. and

  1900. that's

  1901. dated

  1902. to

  1903. the

  1904. 9th

  1905. century

  1906. AD

  1907. and

  1908. the

  1909. discovery

  1910. of the

  1911. Dead Sea

  1912. Scrolls

  1913. have you guys

  1914. seen the

  1915. Dead Sea

  1916. Scrolls

  1917. it's

  1918. come to

  1919. the

  1920. Boston

  1921. Science

  1922. !

  1923. Museum

  1924. in

  1925. the

  1926. past

  1927. which

  1928. is

  1929. amazing

  1930. Museum

  1931. of

  1932. Science

  1933. you guys

  1934. should

  1935. check

  1936. those

  1937. things

  1938. out

  1939. sometimes

  1940. we have

  1941. a wealth

  1942. of resources

  1943. available to us

  1944. living in the

  1945. city

  1946. and

  1947. nowadays

  1948. online

  1949. you can

  1950. even find

  1951. digital

  1952. ways you can

  1953. view the

  1954. Dead Sea

  1955. Scrolls

  1956. and these

  1957. things

  1958. have

  1959. brought

  1960. the

  1961. manuscripts

  1962. date

  1963. back

  1964. far as

  1965. 200

  1966. BC

  1967. confirming

  1968. once again

  1969. the

  1970. accuracy

  1971. of the

  1972. mesoretic

  1973. text

  1974. we have

  1975. and

  1976. showing

  1977. that

  1978. the

  1979. Old

  1980. Testament

  1981. A good

  1982. preservation

  1983. of

  1984. what was

  1985. written

  1986. and so

  1987. the fact

  1988. that the

  1989. Bible

  1990. is passed

  1991. down to

  1992. us like

  1993. this

  1994. is really

  1995. a historical

  1996. miracle

  1997. over so

  1998. many continents

  1999. so many

  2000. authors

  2001. and so

  2002. many

  2003. thousands

  2004. of years

  2005. and that's

  2006. because

  2007. God

  2008. intended

  2009. it

  2010. that way

  2011. he's

  2012. preserved

  2013. it

  2014. for us

  2015. and

  2016. so

  2017. many

  2018. people

  2019. have

  2020. tried

  2021. to

  2022. stamp

  2023. out

  2024. the

  2025. Bible

  2026. in

  2027. history

  2028. right

  2029. Roman

  2030. emperors

  2031. persecuting

  2032. Christians

  2033. trying to

  2034. burn

  2035. all the

  2036. Bible

  2037. and yet

  2038. it has

  2039. survived

  2040. and thrived

  2041. now

  2042. and it's

  2043. part of

  2044. the

  2045. Guinness

  2046. book

  2047. world

  2048. records

  2049. right

  2050. five to

  2051. seven

  2052. billion

  2053. copies

  2054. of the

  2055. Bible

  2056. printed

  2057. and

  2058. it's

  2059. really

  2060. a

  2061. historical

  2062. miracle

  2063. the

  2064. grass

  2065. withers

  2066. the

  2067. flower

  2068. fades

  2069. but the

  2070. word of

  2071. our

  2072. God

  2073. will

  2074. stand

  2075. forever

  2076. so

  2077. I

  2078. want

  2079. you

  2080. to

  2081. really

  2082. don't

  2083. take

  2084. this

  2085. for

  2086. granted

  2087. and

  2088. as

  2089. English

  2090. speakers

  2091. we

  2092. have

  2093. we

  2094. have

  2095. an

  2096. embarrassment

  2097. of

  2098. riches

  2099. !

  2100. there's

  2101. like

  2102. 900

  2103. something

  2104. English

  2105. translations

  2106. and

  2107. no

  2108. language

  2109. has

  2110. had

  2111. the

  2112. Bible

  2113. translated

  2114. that

  2115. many

  2116. times

  2117. in

  2118. history

  2119. we

  2120. are

  2121. the

  2122. beneficiaries

  2123. of that

  2124. the

  2125. Old

  2126. Testament

  2127. was

  2128. written

  2129. primarily

  2130. in

  2131. Hebrew

  2132. there's

  2133. some

  2134. sections

  2135. of

  2136. Daniel

  2137. and

  2138. Ezra

  2139. which

  2140. are

  2141. written

  2142. in

  2143. Aramaic

  2144. the

  2145. New

  2146. Testament

  2147. is

  2148. written

  2149. entirely

  2150. in

  2151. Greek

  2152. and

  2153. for

  2154. this

  2155. reason

  2156. every

  2157. English

  2158. Bible

  2159. you

  2160. have

  2161. is

  2162. a

  2163. translation

  2164. and

  2165. we're

  2166. and as

  2167. I

  2168. mentioned

  2169. there's

  2170. many

  2171. good

  2172. translations

  2173. but

  2174. for

  2175. us

  2176. English

  2177. speakers

  2178. perhaps

  2179. the

  2180. most

  2181. important

  2182. one

  2183. because

  2184. of

  2185. the

  2186. role

  2187. it

  2188. plays

  2189. in

  2190. the

  2191. history

  2192. of

  2262. magisterial

  2267. why do

  2268. you think

  2269. they

  2270. did

  2271. that

  2299. is

  2300. going to

  2301. mess

  2302. it

  2303. up

  2304. why

  2305. entrust

  2306. the

  2311. who

  2312. don't

  2316. given

  2317. authority

  2318. that's

  2319. it's

  2320. their

  2321. theology

  2322. functioning

  2323. right

  2324. and so

  2325. they're

  2326. trying

  2327. to

  2328. in

  2329. their

  2332. they

  2337. protecting

  2338. God's

  2340. by

  2341. by

  2343. people

  2344. who

  2345. want

  2346. to

  2347. put

  2348. the

  2349. Bible

  2350. in

  2351. the

  2352. hands

  2353. of

  2354. people

  2355. so

  2356. that

  2357. they

  2358. can

  2359. be

  2360. established

  2361. in

  2362. the

  2363. truth

  2364. of

  2365. God

  2366. and so

  2367. William

  2368. Tyndale

  2369. because of

  2370. this was

  2371. convicted of

  2372. heresy

  2373. and executed

  2374. strangled

  2375. to death

  2376. after his

  2377. body was

  2378. burned at

  2379. the stake

  2380. as a

  2381. demonstration

  2382. to warn

  2383. similarly

  2386. but his

  2391. and the

  2392. Pentateuch

  2393. and the

  2394. OT historical

  2395. books

  2396. was finished

  2397. and it

  2398. became the

  2400. mass

  2402. English

  2403. Bible

  2404. it's

  2405. called

  2406. the

  2407. Tyndale

  2408. Bible

  2409. it

  2410. spread

  2411. like

  2412. wildfire

  2413. it

  2414. became

  2415. the

  2416. basis

  2417. for

  2418. subsequent

  2419. English

  2420. translations

  2421. of the

  2422. Bible

  2423. and

  2424. people

  2425. estimate

  2426. that

  2427. about

  2428. 90%

  2429. of

  2430. the

  2431. authorized

  2432. version

  2433. the

  2434. King

  2435. James

  2436. version

  2437. is

  2438. taken

  2439. directly

  2440. from

  2441. Tyndale

  2442. translation

  2443. and

  2444. given

  2445. the

  2446. significant

  2447. impact

  2448. of

  2449. the

  2450. King

  2451. James

  2452. version

  2453. on

  2454. the

  2455. English

  2456. language

  2457. many

  2458. scholars

  2459. very

  2460. credibly

  2461. argue

  2462. that

  2463. William

  2464. Tyndale

  2465. and not

  2466. William

  2467. Shakespeare

  2468. is the

  2469. most

  2470. influential

  2471. figure

  2472. in the

  2473. development

  2474. of the

  2475. English

  2476. language

  2477. and I

  2478. agree

  2479. with them

  2480. and so

  2481. let me

  2482. show you

  2483. guys a

  2484. diagram

  2485. of

  2486. can you guys

  2487. see that

  2488. a little bit

  2489. it shows

  2490. kind of

  2491. the

  2492. family tree

  2493. of the

  2494. various

  2495. translations

  2496. here's the

  2497. Tyndale's

  2498. New Testament

  2499. English

  2500. Bible

  2501. it's

  2502. the

  2503. dotted

  2504. lines

  2505. are

  2506. revisions

  2507. kind of

  2508. of those

  2509. translations

  2510. and

  2511. kind of

  2512. the

  2513. solid

  2514. lines

  2515. are

  2516. kind of

  2517. like

  2518. new

  2519. translations

  2520. that are

  2521. being

  2522. reworked

  2523. using

  2524. some

  2525. of the

  2526. basis

  2527. of

  2528. that

  2529. older

  2530. translation

  2531. these

  2532. translations

  2533. here

  2534. all

  2535. come

  2536. from

  2537. Tyndale

  2538. even

  2539. the

  2540. revised

  2541. standard

  2542. version

  2543. RSB

  2544. and

  2545. from

  2546. which

  2547. you

  2548. get

  2549. the

  2550. NASB

  2551. and

  2552. ESB

  2553. they're

  2554. coming

  2555. from

  2556. the

  2557. KJV

  2558. which

  2559. came

  2560. from

  2561. Tyndale

  2562. so

  2563. you're

  2564. also

  2565. reading

  2566. a lot

  2567. of

  2568. what

  2569. Tyndale

  2570. wrote

  2571. when you

  2572. read

  2573. the

  2574. ESB

  2575. and

  2576. then

  2577. this

  2578. was

  2579. based

  2580. on

  2581. some

  2582. of

  2583. the

  2584. older

  2585. Greek

  2586. texts

  2587. we've

  2588. discovered

  2589. a lot

  2590. more

  2591. new

  2592. Greek

  2593. text

  2594. ancient

  2595. manuscripts

  2596. over

  2597. time

  2598. and

  2599. because

  2600. of

  2601. that

  2602. some

  2603. of

  2604. these

  2605. translations

  2606. at

  2607. the

  2608. top

  2609. are

  2610. based

  2611. on

  2612. the

  2613. you

  2614. run

  2615. into

  2616. some

  2617. King

  2618. James

  2619. only

  2620. folks

  2621. they're

  2622. really

  2623. mistaken

  2624. because

  2625. the

  2626. King

  2627. James

  2628. version

  2629. is

  2630. an

  2631. amazing

  2632. English

  2633. translation

  2634. no doubt

  2635. but

  2636. it's

  2637. not

  2638. based

  2639. on

  2640. the

  2641. largest

  2642. collection

  2643. of

  2644. Hebrew

  2645. and

  2646. Greek

  2647. manuscripts

  2648. and

  2649. because

  2650. of

  2651. that

  2652. there

  2653. are

  2654. some

  2655. actual

  2656. mistakes

  2657. in

  2658. it

  2659. that's

  2660. not

  2661. what

  2662. was

  2663. actually

  2664. written

  2665. and

  2666. so

  2667. some

  2668. of

  2669. the

  2670. top

  2671. translations

  2672. are

  2673. what

  2674. we

  2675. would

  2676. use

  2677. now

  2678. at

  2679. the

  2680. top

  2681. you

  2682. see

  2683. an

  2684. arrow

  2685. and

  2686. on

  2687. the

  2688. left

  2689. it

  2690. says

  2691. word

  2692. for

  2693. word

  2694. and

  2695. on

  2696. the

  2697. right

  2698. it

  2699. says

  2700. thought

  2701. for

  2702. thought

  2703. this

  2704. is

  2705. the

  2706. kind

  2707. of

  2708. a

  2709. translational

  2710. philosophy

  2711. so

  2712. the

  2713. translations

  2714. that are

  2715. closer

  2716. to the

  2717. left

  2718. are

  2719. going

  2720. to

  2721. try

  2722. to

  2723. preserve

  2724. the

  2725. exact

  2726. Greek

  2727. word

  2728. or

  2729. Hebrew

  2730. word

  2731. and

  2732. convey

  2733. it

  2734. so

  2735. that

  2736. you

  2737. get

  2738. kind

  2739. of

  2740. word

  2741. for

  2742. word

  2743. meaning

  2744. and

  2745. how

  2746. right

  2747. are

  2748. you

  2749. know

  2750. they're

  2751. they're

  2752. they're

  2753. focusing

  2754. on

  2755. what we

  2756. call

  2757. dynamic

  2758. equivalence

  2759. so

  2760. they're

  2761. even if

  2762. the word

  2763. isn't

  2764. the exact

  2765. right

  2766. word

  2767. they're

  2768. just

  2769. trying

  2770. to

  2771. communicate

  2772. the

  2773. same

  2774. sense

  2775. what

  2776. the

  2777. word

  2778. is

  2779. here

  2780. to

  2781. the

  2782. ancient

  2783. author

  2784. this

  2785. is

  2786. what

  2787. it

  2788. would

  2789. mean

  2790. to

  2791. the

  2792. 21st

  2793. century

  2794. reader

  2795. so

  2796. they

  2797. kind

  2798. of

  2799. try

  2800. to

  2801. give

  2802. you

  2803. the

  2804. sense

  2805. of

  2806. it

  2807. and

  2808. so

  2809. formal

  2810. equivalence

  2811. on

  2812. the

  2813. left

  2814. dynamic

  2815. equivalence

  2816. on

  2817. the

  2818. right

  2819. you

  2820. could

  2821. say

  2822. word

  2823. for

  2824. word

  2825. versus

  2826. thought

  2827. for

  2828. thought

  2829. is

  2830. easier

  2831. way

  2832. to

  2833. understand

  2834. that

  2835. Tony

  2836. this

  2837. group

  2838. here

  2839. so

  2840. these

  2841. are

  2842. translations

  2843. based

  2844. on

  2845. Jerome's

  2846. Latin

  2847. Vulgate

  2848. yeah

  2849. so

  2850. Wycliffe's

  2851. English

  2852. translation

  2853. was

  2854. based

  2855. in

  2856. Latin

  2857. Vulgate

  2858. but

  2859. Latin

  2860. Vulgate

  2861. is

  2862. not

  2863. based

  2864. on

  2865. the

  2866. original

  2867. texts

  2868. it

  2869. is

  2870. based

  2871. on

  2872. the

  2873. original

  2874. text

  2875. but

  2876. Latin

  2877. Vulgate

  2878. itself

  2879. is

  2880. not

  2881. the

  2882. original

  2883. Greek

  2884. and

  2885. Hebrew

  2886. so

  2887. because

  2888. these

  2889. are

  2890. translations

  2891. of

  2892. a

  2893. translation

  2894. they're

  2895. in

  2896. a

  2897. separate

  2898. category

  2899. as

  2900. opposed

  2901. to

  2902. these

  2903. translations

  2904. that

  2905. are

  2906. based

  2907. on

  2908. the

  2909. original

  2910. languages

  2911. yeah

  2912. he did

  2913. it

  2914. straight

  2915. from

  2916. the

  2917. Greek

  2918. first

  2919. English

  2920. translation

  2921. yeah

  2922. amazing

  2923. and

  2924. so

  2925. let me

  2926. give you

  2927. an

  2928. example

  2929. this

  2930. is

  2931. the

  2932. most

  2933. literal

  2934. formal

  2935. equivalence

  2936. translation

  2937. of

  2938. John

  2939. 1

  2940. 14

  2941. Young's

  2942. literal

  2943. translation

  2944. and

  2945. the

  2946. word

  2947. became

  2948. flesh

  2949. and

  2950. did

  2951. tabernacle

  2952. among

  2953. us

  2954. and

  2955. we

  2956. beheld

  2957. his

  2958. glory

  2959. glory

  2960. as

  2961. of

  2962. an

  2963. only

  2964. begotten

  2965. of

  2966. a

  2967. father

  2968. full

  2969. of

  2970. grace

  2971. and

  2972. truth

  2973. a

  2974. little

  2975. bit

  2976. stilted

  2977. right

  2978. because

  2979. of

  2980. the

  2981. formal

  2982. equivalence

  2983. of it

  2984. it's

  2985. very

  2986. close

  2987. to

  2988. the

  2989. original

  2990. text

  2991. but

  2992. it

  2993. actually

  2997. the

  2999. for

  3000. the

  3001. modern

  3002. reader

  3003. right

  3004. like

  3005. what

  3006. does

  3007. it

  3008. mean

  3009. that

  3010. he

  3011. tabernacles

  3012. among

  3013. us

  3014. what

  3015. does

  3016. it

  3017. mean

  3018. he's

  3019. the

  3020. only

  3021. begotten

  3022. of

  3023. a

  3024. father

  3025. this

  3026. is

  3027. the

  3028. other

  3029. extreme

  3030. of

  3031. complete

  3032. dynamic

  3033. equivalence

  3034. the

  3035. message

  3036. translation

  3037. this

  3038. is

  3039. using

  3040. Peterson's

  3041. translation

  3042. almost

  3043. almost

  3044. it's

  3045. basically

  3046. a

  3047. paraphrase

  3048. the

  3049. word

  3050. became

  3051. flesh

  3052. and

  3053. blood

  3054. and

  3055. moved

  3056. into

  3057. the

  3058. neighborhood

  3059. we

  3060. saw

  3061. the

  3062. glory

  3063. with

  3064. our

  3065. own

  3066. eyes

  3067. the

  3068. one

  3069. of

  3070. a

  3071. kind

  3072. glory

  3073. like

  3074. father

  3075. like

  3076. son

  3077. generous

  3078. inside

  3079. and

  3080. out

  3081. true

  3082. from

  3083. start

  3084. to

  3085. finish

  3086. it's

  3087. easy

  3088. to

  3089. understand

  3090. right

  3091. that's

  3092. the

  3093. that's

  3094. the

  3095. appeal

  3096. of

  3097. a

  3098. dynamic

  3099. equivalent

  3100. translation

  3101. but

  3102. it

  3103. also

  3104. kind

  3105. of

  3106. obscures

  3107. the

  3108. original

  3109. meaning

  3110. right

  3111. it's

  3112. like

  3113. what

  3114. do

  3115. you

  3116. mean

  3117. you

  3118. moved

  3119. into

  3120. the

  3121. neighborhood

  3122. like

  3123. it's

  3124. like

  3125. a

  3126. generous

  3127. insight

  3128. there's

  3129. just

  3130. like

  3131. a

  3132. lot

  3133. of

  3134. the

  3135. more

  3136. you

  3137. get

  3138. to

  3139. the

  3140. dynamic

  3141. equivalence

  3142. side

  3143. of

  3144. the

  3145. spectrum

  3146. more

  3147. you're

  3148. going

  3149. to

  3150. get

  3151. interpretations

  3152. of

  3153. the

  3154. text

  3155. masquerading

  3156. as

  3157. translation

  3158. right

  3159. and

  3160. so

  3161. that's

  3162. why

  3163. when

  3164. we're

  3165. preaching

  3166. we

  3167. try

  3168. to

  3169. use

  3170. a

  3171. translation

  3172. that's

  3173. more

  3174. in

  3175. the

  3176. formal

  3177. equivalence

  3178. category

  3179. though

  3180. not

  3181. all

  3182. the

  3183. way

  3184. like

  3185. the

  3186. young

  3187. literal

  3188. translation

  3189. so

  3190. ESV

  3191. has

  3192. and

  3193. the

  3194. word

  3195. became

  3196. flesh

  3197. and

  3198. dwelt

  3199. among

  3200. us

  3201. we've

  3202. seen

  3203. his

  3204. glory

  3205. the

  3206. only

  3207. son

  3208. from

  3209. the

  3210. father

  3211. and

  3212. I

  3213. one

  3214. of the

  3215. best

  3216. examples

  3217. of a

  3218. good

  3219. word

  3220. for

  3221. word

  3222. translation

  3223. is

  3224. the

  3225. NASB

  3226. NASB

  3227. or

  3228. ESV

  3229. somewhat

  3230. and one

  3231. of the

  3232. best

  3233. examples

  3234. of

  3235. the

  3236. dynamic

  3237. equivalence

  3238. translation

  3239. the

  3240. NIV

  3241. New

  3242. International

  3243. Version

  3244. Lucas

  3245. you have

  3246. a

  3247. question

  3248. yeah

  3249. oh

  3250. yeah

  3251. um

  3252. yeah

  3253. super

  3254. like

  3255. specific

  3256. question

  3257. but

  3258. do you

  3259. ever

  3260. read

  3261. CSB

  3262. yeah

  3263. CSB

  3264. is

  3265. because

  3266. I

  3267. read it

  3268. but I

  3269. kind of

  3270. like

  3271. sneaky

  3272. read it

  3273. like

  3274. by

  3275. myself

  3276. is that

  3277. your

  3278. guilty

  3279. pleasure

  3280. Lucas

  3281. wow

  3282. this

  3283. doesn't

  3284. make

  3285. much

  3286. sense

  3287. in

  3288. ESV

  3289. I'm

  3290. just

  3291. gonna

  3292. switch

  3293. to

  3294. CSB

  3295. I

  3296. know

  3297. now

  3298. that

  3299. you

  3300. say

  3301. that

  3302. you

  3303. know

  3304. I

  3305. meant

  3306. to

  3307. update

  3308. this

  3309. graphic

  3310. but

  3311. I'll

  3312. show

  3313. you

  3314. as it

  3315. is

  3316. and

  3317. so

  3318. this

  3319. is

  3320. kind of

  3321. a

  3322. this

  3323. is

  3324. kind of

  3325. the

  3326. literal

  3327. to

  3328. kind of

  3329. formal

  3330. equivalence

  3331. spectrum

  3332. and this

  3333. is

  3334. is

  3335. how

  3336. readable

  3337. it

  3338. is

  3339. so

  3340. the

  3341. higher

  3342. it

  3343. is

  3344. the

  3345. more

  3346. readable

  3347. it

  3348. is

  3349. understandable

  3350. for the

  3351. modern

  3352. author

  3353. but the

  3354. closer it

  3355. is to

  3356. that side

  3357. the more

  3358. close

  3359. it reflects

  3360. the original

  3361. text

  3362. and obviously

  3363. as a translation

3364. you're trying to hit that optimal sweet spot

  3365. somewhere in the middle

3366. and guess who made this graphic

3367. whoever publishes the csv made this graphic and so this is very very biased and I would argue that csv is not at the exact optimal center I think the ESV is a little closer to that you know and so this is yeah but that's why I wanted to update this and I tried to find a different graphic but I did find a better graphic

3368. but I did find a better one but you had to pay for it and I tried to pay for it and then it wouldn't work it's like some random guy who teaches like he's like a youth minister in some church in the middle of nowhere who made this amazing graphic and he wants to charge people but he didn't update the website

3369. so I could buy it so anyway so you're trying to find a sweet spot

  3370. yeah go ahead Tony

  3371. yeah sure

  3372. how are these

  3373. like how did they

3374. what was the benchmarking method

  3375. that's a great question

3376. I cannot answer that question

3377. I don't know what benchmarks they used

  3378. I didn't look into their methodology

3379. it's probably not up to MIT standards

  3380. if you're wondering

  3381. all right

  3382. any other questions

3383. there's some resources here and I do want to take you to a different resource

3384. if you do want to learn to use Greek tools for Bible study

3385. there's a really helpful book called Greek for the rest of us

3386. or if you go to biblical training.org

3387. you can also see this resource Greek tools Bible study

3388. and I'm going to take you

3389. if you have phones and computers

3390. if you could go to blueletterbible.org

3391. how many of you guys already use this?

  3392. awesome

  3393. yes okay

3394. how many of you guys have like a more serious paid software?

  3395. it's like

  3396. you know

  3397. it's like a

  3398. okay

3399. Jason you don't have one yet?

  3400. I do

  3401. okay

  3402. what do you use?

  3403. logos?

  3404. okay that's great

3405. that's the one that Todd and Ed used to

  3406. I use a cordis

  3407. which

3408. logos was not as developed when I was in seminary

  3409. I wish I had adopted that

  3410. but

3411. if you can go to blueletterbible.org

3412. this is what it looks like

3413. Blue Letter Bible just celebrated their 30th anniversary last year

  3414. and

  3415. it's

  3416. hey Ed

3417. the Blue Letter Bible is actually not that much

  3418. older

3419. not that much younger than the internet itself

  3420. it's

3421. at the advent of the internet

  3422. these creators realized

3423. the internet doesn't have a lot of good content

3424. it doesn't have any Bible in it

3425. and so they wanted to put the Bible online

3426. and put all the related resources online they could

3427. and that's in the public domain

3428. and at the time all the hyperlinks were blue

3429. because whoever created that liked the color blue

3430. and so that's why they called it the Blue Letter Bible

3431. and they linked all the different words in the Bible verses

  3432. to make it

  3433. you know

3434. connected to the various resources

3435. so it's an amazing resource

  3436. look at that

  3437. there's 38,385 users right now

3438. so I'm going to show you guys just how to use some of the basic tools on this

  3439. if you look

  3440. go here

  3441. let's see

3442. I'm going to put Genesis

  3443. 1-1

  3444. and here

3445. when you're going to the Old Testament

  3446. you want to select

  3447. also

  3448. to see

  3449. you know what

3450. let's just go to ESV for now

3451. and then let's search for it

3452. and I'll show you from here

  3453. you go in

3454. and you'll see all the Bible verses

3455. and then if you hover over this tools

3456. do you guys see that?

3457. do you guys see it?

  3458. yeah

  3459. there are several options

  3460. great cross references

  3461. other Bibles

  3462. commentaries as well

3463. that's in the public domain

3464. Charles Spurgeon's commentaries in here

  3465. which is great

3466. if you want to access John Calvin's commentary

3467. that's also in the public domain

  3468. free online

  3469. at CCEL

  3470. which is what?

  3471. Christian something

  3472. ethereal library

  3473. Christian classics

  3474. ethereal library

  3475. CCEL

  3476. great resource as well

3477. if you go to interlinear here

  3478. it's going to

  3479. take you to the

  3480. Westminster Leningrad Codex

  3481. which is

3482. the oldest full Hebrew manuscript

  3483. we have

  3484. so obviously

  3485. unless you studied Hebrew

3486. you're not going to know

  3487. what they are

  3488. but

3489. you can click on them

  3490. and they'll tell you

3491. so you can click on this

  3492. the Strong's number

  3493. Strong's number is basically

  3494. a scholar in 1890

  3495. named James Strong

  3496. did the meticulous work

  3497. of

  3498. numbering

  3499. every unique

  3500. Greek

  3501. Hebrew

  3502. Aramaic word

  3503. in the original

  3504. Magical Bible

  3505. and so every

  3506. unique word

  3507. has a number

  3508. Strong's number

3509. which is still widely used

3510. so you click on the

  3511. Strong number

  3512. and it's going to

  3513. pull up

  3514. every single

  3515. occasion

  3516. instance

  3517. where that word

  3518. is used

  3519. in the Hebrew Bible

  3520. in the Old Testament

  3521. which is very

  3522. very useful

  3523. because then you can

  3524. compare those verses

  3525. and see how those

3526. how that word is used

  3527. and how it's translated

  3528. by the various

  3529. English translators

  3530. you guys following

  3531. what I'm saying

  3532. and we're going to

3533. I'm going to have you guys

3534. do this so you can

  3535. get some practice

  3536. if you have

  3537. smartphones and stuff

  3538. they have an app

  3539. also you could

  3540. just download

  3541. and I hear it's

  3542. very useful

  3543. one more thing

3544. I want to show you

  3545. is if you're going

  3546. to go to the

  3547. there is a way

  3548. to set it up

  3549. so that

  3550. it shows

  3551. the Hebrew text

  3552. or Greek text

  3553. side by side

  3554. so let's go here

  3555. to Matthew 1-1

  3556. and then

  3557. parallel

  3558. right here

  3559. and then here

  3560. you click

  3561. the Greek text

  3562. which is

  3563. the morphological

  3564. Greek New Testament

  3565. M-G-N-T

  3566. and you click

  3567. that

  3568. and you'll get

  3569. all the Greek text

  3570. isn't that cool

  3571. and then you can

  3572. click into them

  3573. and it'll tell you

  3574. what it means

  3575. and what form

  3576. it's in

  3577. and most

  3578. you know

  3579. most of us

  3580. who've graduated

  3581. from seminary

  3582. are relying on

  3583. these tools

  3584. anyway

  3585. because we forget

  3586. so much

  3587. and we use them

  3588. too

  3589. and so this is

  3590. a great way

  3591. for you guys

  3592. to be able to

  3593. access that

  3594. so we're going

  3595. to practice

  3596. if you guys

  3597. can break into

  3598. groups of maybe

  3599. four or five

  3600. maybe

  3601. would two groups

  3602. at each table

  3603. work

  3604. maybe two groups

  3605. at each table

  3606. you guys okay

  3607. so I'm going

  3608. to pass these out

  3609. I'm going to

  3610. give you guys

  3611. the Hebrew

  3612. and Greek text

  3613. you guys

  3614. kind of

  3615. nice

  3616. chat

3617. if you have a pen

  3618. or pencil

3619. this is a great time

  3620. to bust out

  3621. the pen or pencil

  3622. you brought

  3623. so I've given you

  3624. guys

  3625. oh wow

  3626. does anybody

  3627. not have a copy

  3628. you guys have

  3629. enough in each

  3630. table

  3631. you need more

  3632. here

  3633. here

  3634. I've given you

  3635. guys

  3636. kind of

  3637. three different

  3638. translations

  3639. of Exodus

  3640. 21

  3641. 22 to 25

  3642. and this is

  3643. to show you

  3644. guys the value

  3645. of comparing

  3646. English translations

  3647. so that you

  3648. can get at

  3649. the translational

  3650. issues that exist

  3651. underneath them

  3652. and so

  3653. they're from

  3654. the revised

  3655. standard version

  3656. new international

  3657. version

  3658. and English

  3659. standard version

  3660. and for now

  3661. in your respective

  3662. groups

  3663. I want you to

  3664. not use

  3665. blue letter

  3666. Bible yet

  3667. just compare

  3668. the English

  3669. texts

  3670. and try to

  3671. observe

  3672. where are they

  3673. different

  3674. and how does

  3675. that change

  3676. your interpretation

  3677. and understanding

  3678. of that text

  3679. so just talk

  3680. about that

  3681. for the next

  3682. five to ten

  3683. minutes

  3684. and then I'll

  3685. call you guys

  3686. back

  3687. and share

  3688. all right

  3689. you guys ready

  3690. to talk about

  3691. it

  3692. what did you

  3693. guys find out

  3694. about the

  3695. virgin

  3696. or the betrothed

  3697. yes

  3698. it could be

  3699. man or woman

  3700. yeah

  3701. well no no

  3702. partner

  3703. is

  3704. no

  3705. partner

  3706. is

  3707. it's almost

  3708. always

  3709. woman

  3710. yes

  3711. yes

  3712. yes

  3713. yes

  3714. yes

  3715. yes

  3716. yes

  3717. yes

  3718. it's

  3719. but what

  3720. what is it

  3721. what's a better

  3722. translation

  3723. betrothed

  3724. or virgin

  3725. virgin

  3726. yeah

  3727. virgin

  3728. because

  3729. betrothed

  3730. says a little

  3731. more than

  3732. what the word

  3733. means

  3734. right

  3735. so

  3736. to my knowledge

  3737. Revelation 14

  3738. is the only

  3739. place

  3740. part of us

  3741. is used

  3742. for male

  3743. virgins

  3744. he can't

  3745. use it

  3746. it's almost

  3747. always

  3748. scripture

  3749. refers to

  3750. young

  3751. woman

  3752. of marriageable

  3753. age

  3754. with not

  3755. yeah

  3756. and so

  3757. so

  3758. it's better

  3759. to translate

  3760. as virgin

  3761. betrothed

  3762. seems like

  3763. an over

  3764. translation

  3765. now

  3766. what about

  3767. if his

  3768. passions are

  3769. strong

  3770. or if he's

  3771. past

  3772. her youth

  3773. how'd you

  3774. guys

  3775. what's this

  3776. blue letter

  3777. I will say

  3778. dictionary

  3779. I can put

  3780. on there

  3781. it's tough

  3782. because there's

  3783. only one

  3784. decent word

  3785. in the bible

  3786. yeah

  3787. so like

  3788. yeah

  3789. I don't know

  3790. like

  3791. where

  3792. it's

  3793. really

  3794. under

  3795. bible

  3796. that's

  3797. yeah

  3798. interpretation

  3799. and so

  3800. Dre is making

  3801. a good point

  3802. that this word

  3803. this Greek word

  3804. is used

  3805. only once

  3806. in the entire bible

  3807. that's what you call

  3808. a hot pox

  3809. legomenah

  3810. it only occurs

3811. once in the entire bible

  3812. so what context

  3813. do you use

  3814. to determine

  3815. what that means

  3816. it's hard

  3817. so you do have

  3818. to rely some

  3819. on the dictionary

  3820. that are using

  3821. examples

3822. not only from the bible

  3823. but also other

  3824. Greek literature

  3825. ancient Greek literature

  3826. to supply

  3827. the name

  3828. so what does

  3829. the dictionary say

  3830. it says like

  3831. plump or overwrite

  3832. overwrite

  3833. overwrite

  3834. right

  3835. past

  3836. bloom

  3837. right

  3838. and

  3839. so

3840. this is a Greek tool

  3841. that I used

  3842. for my classic studies

  3843. you don't really

  3844. get taught this

  3845. in seminary that much

  3846. it's called

  3847. it's from Tufts University

  3848. Perseus.tufts.eu

  3849. it's called

3850. the Greek word study tool

3851. and if you put in

  3852. the Greek word here

  3853. it will not only

  3854. give you occurrences

  3855. in the bible

3856. it will also give you

  3857. occurrences in

  3858. all extant

  3859. ancient Greek manuscripts

  3860. !

  3861. including

  3862. you know

  3863. Medea

  3864. you know

  3865. like others

  3866. you know

  3867. poems

  3868. by tragedians

  3869. and

  3870. it's

  3871. so that's very useful

3872. and if you do a search

  3873. on that

  3874. you find that

  3875. that the word

  3876. is used

  3877. to refer to

  3878. the

  3879. so

  3880. akmas

  3881. is where we get

  3882. the word acme

  3883. means peak

  3884. puper

  3885. is where we get

  3886. the word hyper

  3887. means beyond

  3888. beyond peak

  3889. is what this means

  3890. so overwrite

  3891. beyond prime

  3892. so that word

  3893. akmas

  3894. is used to refer

  3895. to a virgin's

  3896. peak

  3897. peak appeal

  3898. of a virgin

  3899. that place

  3900. so if it's beyond

  3901. that

  3902. what is it

  3903. you're past

  3904. your prime

  3905. right

  3906. and so

  3907. which translation

  3908. gets that right

  3909. then

  3910. then as we get

  3911. that right

  3912. it's past

  3913. her youth

  3914. right

  3915. and king james

  3916. version

  3917. has a similar

  3918. similar thing

  3919. so

  3920. who's doing

  3921. what

  3922. did anybody

  3923. look up

  3924. Mary

  3925. so

  3926. in verse 38

  3927. in Nazmi

  3928. he says

  3929. give

  3930. in marriage

  3931. but ESPN

  3932. NIV

  3933. just says

  3934. Mary

  3935. should you guys

  3936. anybody look that up

  3937. yeah

  3938. so

  3939. how did you

  3940. how did you

  3941. decide

  3942. how did you

  3943. come to that

  3944. question

  3945. yeah

  3946. the word

  3947. version

  3948. yeah

  3949. so

  3950. that's

  3951. fascinating

  3952. did everybody hear

  3953. what Emme said

  3954. okay

  3955. so

  3956. she's saying

  3957. that

  3958. in the Nazmi

  3959. it seems

  3960. to be talking

  3961. about

  3962. a father

  3963. giving away

  3964. his virgin

  3965. daughter

  3966. in marriage

  3967. giving in marriage

  3968. rather than

  3969. a virgin

  3970. marrying

  3971. someone that

  3972. he or she

  3973. is in

  3974. betrothed

  3975. to

  3976. right

  3977. and so

  3978. that's where

  3979. if you do

  3980. a blue letter

  3981. Bible search

  3982. for the word

  3983. give in marriage

  3984. in verse 38

  3985. or marry

  3986. you'll find

  3987. that the word

  3988. always means

  3989. to give

  3990. in marriage

  3991. it doesn't

  3992. mean to

  3993. marry

  3994. and so

  3995. if that's

  3996. the case

  3997. then this is

  3998. talking about

  3999. the father

  4000. giving away

  4001. his virgin

  4002. daughter in marriage

  4003. rather than

  4004. keeping her

  4005. as a virgin

  4006. at home

  4007. and not

  4008. about

  4009. a betrothed

  4010. person

  4011. engaged

  4012. person

  4013. staying unmarried

  4014. and then

  4015. decide to marry

  4016. the virgin

  4017. does that make sense

  4018. you guys following this

  4019. wait who

  4020. could just say

  4021. what

  4022. yeah go ahead

  4023. isn't that crazy

  4024. yeah

  4025. that's a pretty

  4026. different interpretation

  4027. isn't it

  4028. so it's not like

  4029. should I get married

  4030. it's like

  4031. should you get married

  4032. yeah

  4033. whether it's the father

  4034. deciding

  4035. should I

  4036. keep her

  4037. or keep her

  4038. as a virgin

  4039. since being

  4040. singleness

  4041. can help with

  4042. being singularly

  4043. devoted to the Lord

  4044. as a context

  4045. we might be

  4046. better to keep her

4047. but then if the father

  4048. starts feeling bad

  4049. she's getting

  4050. past her pride

  4051. past her youth

  4052. and start feeling

  4053. bad about it

  4054. then he's saying

  4055. you know what

  4056. give her away

  4057. you're not sinning

  4058. you guys understand

  4059. what's going on

  4060. yeah

  4061. and rather than

  4062. so

  4063. in the ESV

  4064. what does it mean

  4065. for the betrothed

  4066. to

  4067. to keep her

  4068. as his betrothed

  4069. not marry her

  4070. you guys have a

  4071. category for

  4072. what do you say

  4073. they'll just stay

  4074. they'll just stay

  4075. they'll just stay

  4076. they'll just stay

  4077. betrothed

  4078. right

  4079. that's what that means

  4080. right

  4081. that doesn't make any

  4082. sense

  4083. right

  4084. so I think the

  4085. I think the ESV

  4086. got that one

  4087. really wrong

  4088. even though it's

  4089. a really really

  4090. good translation

  4091. so

  4092. hopefully

  4093. you guys can see

  4094. this with your

  4095. own tools

  4096. this is why

  4097. it's important

  4098. to look at

  4099. multiple translations

  4100. whenever you're

  4101. reading a Bible

  4102. it's a good practice

  4103. to read the same

  4104. version of the Bible

  4105. over and over again

  4106. so you gain

  4107. singularity

  4108. but it's also

  4109. a good exercise

  4110. to sometimes

  4111. read the Bible

  4112. one year

  4113. in a different

  4114. translation

  4115. than you've read

  4116. before

  4117. that way you can

  4118. you can notice

  4119. some of these

  4120. discrimencies

  4121. so thank you

  4122. for your patience

  4123. sorry for going

  4124. this is going

  4125. long

  4126. Lord thank you

  4127. for this time

  4128. please make this

  4129. fruitful

  4130. as they go

  4131. in their own way

  4132. in Jesus name

  4133. we pray

  4134. Amen

  4135. Thanks

  4136. may may may

  4137. sank sank
