  1. You're listening to a message to go from Acts Church.

  2. We hope this message will light up your day.

  3. Now we're going to enter into God's Word.

  4. If you have your Bible, you can turn to Mark

    Mark 14 chapter mention

  5. chapter 14. We're going to read verses 3 to 9.

  6. Mark Fu Ying. If you're there, say yes.

  7. All right, let's go. Mark chapter 14, verse 3. And

    Mark 14:3

  8. being in Bethany at the house of Simon the leper,

  9. as he sat at the table, a woman came having

  10. an alabaster flask of very costly oil or spikenard. Then

  11. she broke the flask and poured it on his head.

  12. But there were some who were indignant among themselves and said,

  13. why was this fragrant oil wasted? For it might have

  14. been sold for more than 300 denarii and given to

  15. the poor. And they criticized her sharply.

  16. They were angry at the woman.

  17. Verse 6, what this woman has done will also be

  18. told as a memorial to her. So the story of

  19. Mary of Bethany was very special.

  20. And up to today, I'm preaching about her.

  21. Because Jesus says that wherever this gospel is preached in

  22. the whole world, what this woman has done will also

  23. be told as a memorial to her.

  24. You know, God remembers a lot of people in the Bible.

  25. And as far as I know, 那是我知道的呢?

  26. There are probably only two people in the Bible that

  27. God says He will remember even up to today.

One of them was Mary. Second was David.

Because David was known after God's own heart. So

  30. when you look at this situation, Mary brought a very

  31. costly oil of spikenard. She broke it. and anointed Jesus.

  32. And the scripture says that it cost 300 denarii. I

  33. guess the value must have been a lot. For the

  34. crowd to criticize her. Say, oh, why waste it? But

  35. I've given the money to the poor. So I did

  36. a little bit of reading. How much does 300

  37. denarii will cost?

  39. If you remember another parable which was found in Matthew 20,

  40. if you want to look at the scripture, But

  41. it was a parable where the master goes out to

  42. the field, 就是这个主人就去到了别的地方, and asks people to come to work.

  43. Scripture says that when the end of the day comes,

  44. the master pays each one one denarius. So in other words,

  45. the wages for one day is one denarius. So if

  46. it is 300 denarii, It will basically mean 300 days

  47. of wages. Now many of you, I mean the eight

  48. of you who are graduating, you'll receive your first salary

  49. very soon. Amen. I don't know how much teachers are

  50. paid as a fresh grad. But I'll make an assumption

  51. of 2005. Is that low or not? Okay, let's slow

  52. it down for the sake of calculation. 2000. So imagine

  53. it to be your one year wages.

  54. The alabaster jar will cost one year of your wages.

  55. So if you earn 2000, 2,000 a month. You

  56. bring to the feet of Jesus 24,000. If

  57. you earn 5,000 a month.

You bring to the feet of Jesus.

  59. $ 60, 000. I know what perfume will cost $ 60, 000, but you

  60. get it.

  61. You get the value of it. And you know why

  62. the crowd the scripture says they criticized her sharply.

  63. When you look at the life of Mary of Bethany,

  64. to me, she was a true worshiper. Because in Luke 10.39,

  65. it says that.

  66. When Jesus entered their house, Mary also sat at the

  67. feet of Jesus and heard His word. And we know

  68. that Martha was busy serving. Easy doing work.

  69. So the first point I want to establish for us

  70. today is, Mary was a true worshipper. She knew how

  71. to sit at the feet of Jesus. And this morning,

  72. the Holy Spirit is asking us to come back to

  73. that place where we know how to sit at the

  74. feet of Jesus.

  75. I don't want Ex Nilai or our life to be

  76. a place where we are very busy with activity.

  77. Even if we are busy, I hope it will be

  78. for a very good reason. But never forget the time

  79. when we sit at the feet of Jesus. Because until

  80. and unless you sit at the feet of Jesus, That's

  81. when you truly receive. Because when you.

  82. Sit at the feet of Jesus, you gaze at His beauty,

  83. you gaze at His glory.

  84. Point two for today is that worship can look foolish.

  85. Giving your best to God can look foolish. Because that's

  86. what the crowd did. They would have think how foolish

  87. was Mary to break such an expensive oil where she

  88. could have sold it.

  89. And gave to the poor. But Jesus knew the heart

  90. and intent of all these false religious teachers.

  91. They never cared for the poor in the first place.

  92. They were trying to rob Mary of her expression of worship.

  93. If you want to please God, You don't really

  94. have to care a lot about what people would say

  95. about your keeping to the Lord. The religious teacher

  96. obviously was blinded by their unbelief.

  98. They felt Jesus is of lesser worth than the oil.

  99. Almost along the.

  100. Line that don't give your one year wage, probably give

  101. your one day wage.

  102. Today I asked you, what worth would you give to Jesus?

  103. Would it be a worth that the crowd is saying this?

  104. Or would it be a worth where out of your

  105. own personal encounter of sitting at the feet of Jesus,

  106. you ascribe to Him more?

  107. Worship can look foolish. You know, when David brought

  108. back the ark, Scripture says that while he was king,

  109. he danced undignifiedly. He probably danced with joy. He expresses

  110. his joy. That was his worship. But scripture says that

  111. his first wife, Micah, Saul's daughter, despised David.

  112. Because David, by his role, by his whatever, shouldn't have

  113. done that.

  114. But you know what? You don't have to care about

  115. what the crowd says. Because everything that true worshipper will

  116. do for God is doing it only for the audience

  117. of one. X is not a crowd-pleasing church. X is

  118. a Christ-pleasing church. So worship can look foolish. Sometimes we

  119. talk to people across X number of years of ministry.

  120. We say young people are here to study. Don't ask

  121. them so much. They're here to study. Which is good.

  122. Don't ask them to do so much.

  123. Sometimes exam time, young people will say, I can't come

  124. to church.

  125. But I've examined the following way. I can't serve.

  126. When their friends find out, for example, you tell your friend,

  127. I'm coming to church.

  128. Then your friend say, don't be silly. To most people,

  129. very hard, you know.

  130. Sorry?

  131. Tomorrow's paper very hard. You know the lecturer?

Mr. Ronson. Mr. Ronson. He used to give us tips,

  133. you know. This time, jelat.

He didn't give us any tips. He tell

  135. us tomorrow's paper is going to be very difficult.

Huh? You still go church ah? Huh? You

  137. don't want to study ah? Why you so foolish?

  138. Or rather be foolish in God's eyes. We can

  139. be foolish like how David danced.

  140. The world will look at it as very foolish.

I remember many years ago when I wanted to

  142. buy my first insurance. all good insurance agents must

  143. know your cash flow first. Whether you can afford the

  144. premium or not. If you buy insurance without your agent

  145. doing your cash flow, whether you can afford or cannot afford,

  146. please run away from the agent. So I have to declare, okay,

  147. this month, X amount come in, and X amount will

  148. go out. I have to declare my tithe, I

  149. have to declare my offering. And he looked at me.

I'm not boasting, OK, but he looked at me.

Say, huh, why do you give so much?

  153. Your church don't need your money.

It's like very foolish, you know. I felt like

  155. very foolish.

It's like 10% goes to God.

  157. Plus plus, the offering goes to God. In the

  158. eyes of the world, 在这个世界的观点呢, Why so foolish? Why give

  159. a lot? Give lah, ten cent. One ringgit.

Two ringgit. I don't remind ex-ni lai.

God is not a beggar. And when we give,

  162. we don't give. We give through the church, but we

  163. don't give to the church. We give

  164. to God. So let me ask you. What

  165. worth would you give to Jesus? This is not

  166. a tithe and offering message for you. But it's something

  167. for you to consider even your time. We have seen

  168. time and time again when exam seasons come, when even

  169. when people are tested, they are no longer found even

  170. in church or let alone sitting at the feet of Jesus.

  171. Many of you will be parents one day. And

  172. it's very common. I heard this from pastor also.

Especially during exam time. Parents will come and

  174. tell their kids. Exam is coming. You don't

  175. serve in church. Don't. Go tuition. Go study.

Don't serve in church. And I heard this

  177. many years ago. And then Pastor says that the parents

  178. will one day come back. And say, Pastor, I don't

  179. know what happened to my children. They are working now.

  180. But they are no longer in church. Can you pray?

  181. Of course we will pray. But we knew

  182. where it went wrong. Because at one point where

  183. the child was on fire for God, 因为在某一个时候那个孩子为神火热的时候, where the

  184. child wanted to give God their serving, that breaking of

  186. In other words, it also means exam is bigger than

  187. your God.

  188. Something else is replaceable. And God is replaceable.

  189. Even in my line of work, I've been also hearing

  190. even pastor's children You know that you can grow up

  191. in church. It doesn't mean you are growing up in Christ.

  192. There is a difference. You can be regular in church,

  193. doesn't mean you have a relationship with Christ. So

  194. it's not about church attendance, guys. It's about sitting

  195. at the feet of Jesus, cultivating that devotion time, and

  196. gaze at Him, receiving from Him. So I feel that

  197. whether you're a parent or a spiritual parent, we should

  198. not be too quick to pour cold water over them.

  199. a parent or a spiritual parent, we should.

  200. Not be too quick to pour cold water over the

  201. fire of our young people.

  202. Because the crowd wanted Mary to not break the alabaster.

  203. But it is at the breaking where the fragrance came

  204. out like a sweet-smelling sacrifice to God. So

  205. even the people you fellowship.

If you tell them that you want

  207. to go for a mission trip, you want to do.

  208. This, you want to do that. Anyone which

  209. questions your ability to give God, knowing that you are

  210. giving your best, when they question it, I'll

  211. suggest you to keep them at an arm's length. You

  212. can still fellowship with them. But not every day. Because

  213. one day you will be like them. One day your

  214. fire will be You want to grow your fire in God.

  215. You want to live a life where constantly you know

  216. you want to give God your best. You fellowship with

  217. people who are on fire. You fellowship with people who

  218. talk about God all the time. You don't fellowship with

  219. people who gossip all the time. Because gossip will douse

  220. that fire. You don't fellowship a lot with people who doubt.

  221. So whenever we look at people who once used to

  222. be on fire, now they are doubting. First question, any

  223. kind leader will ask. Who have you been fellowshipping with?

  224. Is the fellowship edifying to you?

  226. Is the fellowship fueling your fire, the right kind of fire?

Or is the fellowship quenching your fire? Mary

  228. was bold, Mary was courageous. She didn't let the crowd

  229. detect her worship.

  230. So the crowd should not detect how we worship God. Third,

  231. worship is a place for the broken. As I mentioned,

  232. the broken jar releases the fragrance of fume. David too

  233. was a very broken man. David was caught in the

  234. scene of adultery and murder. David showed true, genuine, sincere, godly,

  235. sorrowful repentance before God. And he penned this in Psalm 51,

    Psalms 51:17

  236. verse 17. He says that the sacrifice of God are

  237. a broken spirit. A broken and a contrite heart. This,

  238. O God, you will not despise. So yesterday

  239. the Holy Spirit revealed to me. There are many

  240. broken people in our midst. And that our brokenness

  241. can be translated to worship before God if we come

  242. to Him knowing how to sit at His feet. You know,

  243. in my life experience, I don't know how to explain

  244. to you this. But some of you may resonate with this.

  245. The broken people are Sometimes the most generous people.

  246. I don't know the science behind this. But in

  247. my life encounter.

  248. I've seen the broken people being the most generous.

So I was in this prophetic conference.

  250. In Penang. It was many years ago before COVID. I

  251. like being in prophetic conference. Because I felt it was

  252. a place where I can sit down and receive. And

  253. ask God what is the next direction. So in the

  254. second last day of the conference, an old auntie was

  255. sitting next to me.

And she will come with a walker like a.

  257. Yeah, like a walker. She doesn't seem well-to-do.

  258. Just by her clothing. I know. Alright. Then

  259. she asked me this question. Are you coming tomorrow? Okay.

  260. At the second last day, I was having sore throat.

  261. I was having running nose. I didn't intend to come

  262. the last day. I intend to rest. And when she

  263. asked me, I said, oh, I'm not sure. I'll see how.

  264. Then she said this. Father God asked me to pass

  265. to you something tomorrow. It's like, okay. I didn't

  266. give much thought. Next morning, the last day.

  267. I came. Then, three and a half, she saw me.

She brought a red plastic bag. You know, like,

  269. you go to market, those plastic bags.

  270. Got yellow, green, red. One big bag, she brought.

Say, Father God asked me to pass this to you.

When I took the bag, It was quite heavy.

Then I hold around, I noticed there's a

  274. lot of coins. Like a lot, a lot of coins.

Okay, I know these days you all just give

  276. me QR, give me QR, then you all transfer.

There was a lot of coin.

  278. I felt very humble. But yet it reminded me. In

  279. the Bible, God will always use the widow. God will

  280. always use the poor to provide. For His people. So

  281. you can be small. You can be poor. But God

  282. can use you. Because you know how to sit at

  283. the feet of Jesus. So after the conference, I packed everything.

  284. I need to take an afternoon flight back to Subang.

  285. I came back. Guess what was the first thing I did. Guess. Sleep. No,

  286. I open up my bag or open up the plastic

  287. bag to see what is it that this lady has

  288. gifted me. 70 ringgit worth of coins. This is like

  289. only 50 cents. And 20 cents. So I stacked them up. Count, count, count.

  290. It's like, wow, I got 70 ringgit. Coins. I felt

  291. really bad. Because I felt that maybe this auntie needed

  292. more than me.

  293. I felt that maybe this auntie needed more than me.

  294. Because I'm not despising her giving.

  295. But I felt for RM70.

  296. I have it in my pocket. I may not require it.

  297. But for her, 70 ringgit maybe can fit her a

  298. month or two weeks. And it's in coins. She probably

  299. would have saved it. Today, if I ask you, do

  300. you all still have your piggy bank coins? You

  301. still have the Dutch lady tin can where you put

  302. your coins.

Or the Van Houten chocolate. You know, you're the tin.

  304. Different generation. For this lady, the number of coins she had.

  305. Or 70 ringgit. So I find that the poor

  306. are usually the most generous.

I don't know how to explain this.

The broken in the spirit often can be the

  309. most generous in their words also. Somehow they are

  310. more empathic.

  311. Somehow they are more kind. I want to encourage us

  312. if you are in a place where you are broken.

  313. It may sound like an oxymoron to say this. But

  314. you are in a very good place. You are

  315. in a very good place when you are broken and

  316. you are found in Christ. In the Beatitudes,

  317. Matthew chapter 5 verse 3 say, Blessed are the poor

    Matthew 5:3

  318. in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

There's something powerful when we give out

  320. of that posture of brokenness.

  321. And when David penned in the psalm we read earlier,

  322. If you really put yourself in David's shoe, and I

  323. would ask you this question, do you think David had

  324. teared when he penned this down? I believe he would

  325. have cried his eyeballs out in tears. Say, God, I'm

  326. so sorry. For not just I have sinned against you,

  327. I have done very wrong things. And that tear became

  328. that offer to God. Nothing beats giving God your tears

  329. more than your words.

Because there are days you and I know when

  331. we go to God, when we sit at His feet,

  332. there's really nothing we can express except through our tears.

And God remembers every tear. So extreme comes up.

  334. The question I have for us this afternoon is, What

  335. worth do you give to Jesus? What worth will you

  336. give to Jesus despite your brokenness? Is he worth your

  337. every clap? Is He worth your every cheer? Is He

  338. worth your every giving? Is Jesus still number one in

  339. your life? We hope you've been blessed by this message.

  343. ahead for you.
