  1. Welcome to our Sunday evening service.

  2. Pastor is on vacation.

  3. Pray for him. Mrs. Hixon. He will be

  4. back next weekend.

  5. He'll be here next Sunday.

  6. Hopefully refreshed from his

  7. vacation.

  8. We've been talking about the sound

  9. doctrines, the great doctrines of the

  10. Bible,

  11. doing a doctrinal uh study.

  12. And you know, we typically go verse by

  13. verse.

  14. That's sort of my favorite way.

  15. But uh I'm sure glad for this series

  16. I've benefited from it allowed me to you

  17. know go deeper in some of these great

  18. subjects of the Bible and

  19. you know God he is the greatest subject

  20. of the Bible. So

  21. you know he's the first one we've looked

  22. at

  23. and I think every message but two we had

  24. two on the word of God and the

  25. sufficiency of the word of God. That's

  26. where we get our sound doctrine.

  27. Um, it's in the sufficient word of God.

  28. It is from the word. You guys go to the

  29. Bible church, you know that.

  30. Uh, but so many people miss this. And so

  31. many people replace

  32. the word of God with something else. You

  33. know, whatever you you replace it with,

  34. you you know, you've exchanged

  35. gold for lead or even worse,

  36. And that's what David said that about

  37. the word of God. It's gold

  38. and it helps us in this life and in the

  39. life to come. So in keeping them there

  40. is great reward.

  41. So you know we value the word of God

  42. greatly here because that's what it is.

  43. It's the word of God. And that's where

  44. our sound doctrines come from is from

  45. God's word.

  46. And you know, some of them we probably

  47. won't get to or we won't look at, but

  48. we're trying to look at the important

  49. ones, the very important ones

  50. in the study.

  51. So, we have been

  52. uh recently looking at the decrees of

  53. God.

  54. And you know, maybe you've never heard

  55. that term, but it basically it's God's

  56. plan.

  57. It's God. Well, God is going to do what

  58. he said he would do. John read Hebrews

    Hebrews 2 chapter mention

  59. chapter 2 for us tonight. If he'd have

  60. went on down there in chapter 3, it

  61. says, "Well, Moses, you know, Moses

  62. built, you know, and and and this and

  63. that with Israel, but then it says, you

  64. know, God is the builder. God builds all

  65. things,

  66. you know. So, we wouldn't think about a

  67. house just popping up in our

  68. neighborhood.

  69. Oh, wow. There's an house just popped

  70. up. I think I'll take it. No, they have

  71. to be built. They have to be planned.

  72. And you know, that's what the writer of

  73. Hebrews says about God.

  74. You know, he has a plan. He has a

  75. purpose.

  76. And he reveals that plan and that

  77. purpose to us in the word of God. Only

  78. there will we find it.

  79. So that is the reasoning behind the

  80. sound doctrine and and us looking at it.

  81. And you know the greatest thing about

  82. God, one of the greatest things about

  83. God is that he he is saving sinners. He

  84. save you know and that's who we are.

  85. That's where we come in.

  86. And he h God has decrees and we've

  87. looked at God's decrees to creation

  88. now a couple weeks ago. I enjoyed that

  89. one. But you know all the things that

  90. God said about his creation. It's all

  91. over the word of God.

  92. And you know he God brought this world

  93. into existence and God's going to take

  94. this world out of existence.

  95. It's his. He's the owner. He's the

  96. author.

  97. And who's going to argue with God?

  98. So as we come to his word, that's what

  99. we want to find out. What has God said?

  100. That might be of great importance to us,

  101. especially when it comes to creation.

  102. You know, I know we we need to be

  103. stewards of the environment,

  104. but um we're not going to wreck and ruin

  105. what God has set in motion.

  106. You know, we're still doing 24 hours a

  107. day. We still have four seasons. We, you

  108. know, everything God put in place back

  109. in Genesis is still going.

  110. Nobody's had to fly up to the sun and

  111. take the Energizer Bunny and exchange

  112. the batteries in the sun.

  113. So, God can fire is a good thing for us

  114. to look at. God can,

  115. you know, the burning bush.

  116. God was in it, but he didn't consume the

  117. bush. So God can be a fire but not

  118. consume anything.

  119. And we had Shadrach, Meshach, and

  120. Abedneo in the in the furnace.

  121. Says they come out not smelling like

  122. smoke and with no burns, you know. So

  123. God can decide if fire is going to burn

  124. or if you're going to smell like smoke

  125. after you have been around fire. I mean,

  126. these are the great sovereign things

  127. about God. There's nothing beyond his

  128. reach. There's nothing that he doesn't

  129. know. And you know, that's how great our

  130. God is. Jim talked about that

  131. this morning. Pastor Ospar used to say,

  132. "You're either you're a little God or a

  133. big God.

  134. Either your God is little or your God is

  135. big."

  136. And when we get into the word of God, we

  137. find out that our God is big.

  138. He's great.

  139. He's beyond our comprehending. And you

  140. know, so that's why we count on his

  141. revelation

  142. to help us with these things. So, you

  143. know, some of God's decrees came from

  144. eternity past. God has always existed

  145. and his decrees and the things that he

  146. says are like him.

  147. He's faithful and so is his word, you

  148. know, and everything that God says is

  149. and will come to pass, you know, even,

  150. you know, right down to the day that we

  151. are going to die.

  152. You know, we all have a number

  153. and we all go in that number and God

  154. knows the day, the hour, the conditions

  155. in which we will die. He knows

  156. everything.

  157. So this all knowing God

  158. has um predestinated some things to

  159. creation.

  160. And this tonight we're going to look at

  161. what God has decreed to his children.

  162. Now God has a big family. you know, we

  163. have the Jewish promises,

  164. but we have what uh you know, that us

  165. Gentiles, you know, we've been grafted

  166. in, and now we're children of God. And

  167. you know, we wouldn't be children of

  168. God. We wouldn't be we're Gentiles.

  169. Remember, we you know, I don't even know

  170. a Jew anymore.

  171. So you know Gentiles are preaching the

  172. gospel reaching other Gentiles.

  173. So as that happens we find out about

  174. these great decrees of God that God it's

  175. there in the Old Testament you know

  176. multiple times where he said that he was

  177. going to bring the gentile nations in

  178. through his grace.

  179. Well here we are. You know, Jesus had

  180. one when he said, "The gates of hell

  181. will not prevail against his church."

  182. That's a decree.

  183. You can't go against what he said.

  184. And so the these things we began to

  185. understand

  186. and we begin to explore the word of God.

  187. And not all of God's decrees are are

  188. creature comfortable.

  189. There are some things here I wish wasn't

  190. here, but it's here.

  191. And we can't change it. We can't alter

  192. it. We just have to believe it. And

  193. there, you know, we have hell, we have

  194. retribution. And, you know, I'll we'll

  195. be looking at that in the in the weeks

  196. to come. But tonight, I want to zero in

  197. on election, on what God has done for

  198. his children. That's that's his elect.

  199. That is us. Turn over to Acts chapter 4

    Acts 4 chapter mention

  200. as we be get going here.

  201. And you know, we we our God's a great

  202. God. You know, he's sovereign.

  203. He He does whatever he pleases. He needs

  204. no one's permission. He's a great God.

  205. You know, he's he's able to do these

  206. incredible things. We know about the

  207. providence of God.

  208. No, we can just, you know, rest in that.

  209. You know, everything works together for

  210. the good to them who are called. So

  211. these things bring comfort to us as we,

  212. you know, learn that, you know, just who

  213. our God is. And it's the same way with

  214. his decrees to his children. That's us.

  215. It's God's promises

  216. to his children and to us.

  217. And here in the book of Acts in chapter

  218. 4, we also had last week we talked about

  219. concurrence.

  220. And maybe you know what that is, maybe

  221. you don't. It's a big word, but it's not

  222. in the Bible. But concurrence is here,

  223. but that word's not here. There's a lot

  224. of things that, you know, the words

  225. aren't here, but it's here. like

  226. trinity. You know, the word trinity is

  227. nowhere in the Bible,

  228. but the trinity is

  229. it's just a term we use to describe

  230. that, you know, the triune God. Well,

  231. concurrence means that, you know, God

  232. has the last say.

  233. And that's the way the book of Genesis

  234. ends with

  235. the way Joseph was treated by his own

  236. family.

  237. I mean, that's an amazing story. If

  238. you've never read it, if you have, you

  239. know what an amazing story it is.

  240. His brother sold him into slavery,

  241. you know, and then

  242. he was abused and, you know, up and down

  243. and around he went. And then in the book

  244. of Genesis, um, God says, "They meant it

  245. for evil, but I meant it for good."

  246. So God can take things that are evil.

  247. God doesn't sin. You can't tempt God

  248. with sin. Sin never come from God.

  249. It come from the devil and it came from

  250. us. And it does come from us.

  251. But God doesn't sin. Neither does he

  252. tempt any man with sin. Neither could he

  253. be tempted with sin. all those great

  254. things. God is holy, just in, and in all

  255. of his ways. So, we find out that, you

  256. know, God's, you know, he's greater than

  257. we are. He's better than we are. He

  258. knows more than we do.

  259. So, he lets us in on some of these

  260. decrees that he made

  261. so that we'll believe them and

  262. understand, you know, sometimes what's

  263. going on.

  264. And and here's here's here's one that

  265. you know immediately after Jesus is

  266. crucified

  267. in Jerusalem.

  268. He he returns 40 days he was with them

  269. and he said go tell those people who

  270. murdered me they're sinners and they

  271. need a savior.

  272. And well that's not going to work out

  273. too good is it? Well that's exactly what

  274. God told him to do. So the Jews were

  275. like, "Wait a minute. I thought we were

  276. going to have a kingdom."

  277. No, God says, "We need a savior before

  278. um we can have a kingdom."

  279. So God in his wisdom, God in his decrees

  280. sent his son to this earth. And you know

  281. what the Romans did to him, you know

  282. what the Jews did to him, you know what

  283. we did to him, we were a part of that

  284. and the human race as well. But here in

  285. chapter uh four of the book of acts in

  286. verse 27

  287. here we read for of a truth

  288. you know that you know this is truth you

  289. this isn't a fairy tale this isn't a you

  290. know something that we thought up or the

  291. church come up with

  292. this is truth that god come to earth and

  293. we crucified him

  294. Well,

  295. God,

  296. I hope he don't hold that against us.

  297. No, he is going to hold that against us.

  298. You know, this is the part of the savior

  299. that we need. This is the the redemption

  300. that God bought for us.

  301. And this is the truth against the holy

  302. child Jesus. He's,

  303. you know, the Jews didn't call Jesus

  304. God.

  305. you know, they they had a better term

  306. for they just said, you know, he he's

  307. the son of God.

  308. Well, that automatically makes him God.

  309. You know, there we have uh little gods

  310. with little G's and and Jesus is the son

  311. of God, big G.

  312. So, he is exactly like the father. Jesus

  313. said, "You've seen me, you've seen the

  314. father."

  315. They are exactly alike. and the his son

  316. come to earth

  317. and the holy child Jesus the sinless

  318. child Jesus the holy one

  319. um whom

  320. uh thou has anointed

  321. both Herod and Pontius Pilate and with

  322. the nations and all the people of Israel

  323. were gathered together were all guilty

  324. of this

  325. and it says here to do whatever your

  326. hand and your counsel determined

  327. beforehand to be done.

  328. Now, this doesn't mean that the father

  329. murdered his son.

  330. That's not what this means. It says that

  331. men murdered Jesus and the nation

  332. murdered Jesus. The Gentiles and Pontius

  333. Pilate and everyone who was involved,

  334. the high priest, everyone chose the

  335. thief

  336. and crucified

  337. Jesus.

  338. Now, God in his concurrence

  339. let that happen.

  340. And you know, it was it was hard to go

  341. through.

  342. And we have the accounts and it was hard

  343. to understand as well why why would God

  344. do this? What's you know well God is

  345. trying to get our attention about our

  346. sin and our need of a redeemer and our

  347. need of a savior.

  348. And now, Lord, he says here in verse 29,

  349. "Behold their threatenings, and grant

  350. unto your servants with all boldness

  351. that we may speak the word, the truth

  352. about Jesus dying

  353. and and why he died and for whom he

  354. died."

  355. And he was sinless. He He didn't deserve

  356. this by any means.

  357. and by stretching forth thine hand to

  358. heal th that by signs and wonders may be

  359. done to the name of that holy child

  360. Jesus. And when they prayed, the place

  361. was shaken. They were assembled

  362. together. They were filled with the Holy

  363. Spirit. They spoke the word of God with

  364. boldness. So here Peter says, "Yeah, we

  365. did it. But guess what? It was God's

  366. determined counsel to let this happen.

  367. There must be a reason." Well, if you

  368. will turn back to

  369. um

  370. look over if you will in verse

  371. um 31,

  372. >> which

  373. >> uh 4.

  374. Yep. I just read that one. So when Jesus

  375. was on the cross,

  376. he said he could have called, you know,

  377. a million angels to rescue him.

  378. So he didn't do that. He laid down his

  379. life. And here's the reason why he did

  380. that. Now, turn back to Acts chapter 2.

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  381. And here's what here's what the Bible

  382. said.

  383. So, he laid down his life. That that

  384. happened, you know, over and over in the

  385. gospel. You know, they were going to get

  386. him, you know, but he got away. And he

  387. said, "My time has not yet come. My time

  388. has not yet come."

  389. But once his time was come, that's what

  390. Galatians says, in the fullness of time,

  391. Jesus came and died

  392. for our sins. In verse

  393. 23 here,

  394. it says, "Him

  395. being delivered by the determined

  396. counsel and the fornowledge of God."

  397. That's what we're talking.

  398. God knew this. God knew this was going

  399. to happen. God allowed this to happen.

  400. And God volunteered

  401. uh to pay for our sins. And it says

  402. here, "You took him and by wicked

  403. hands." It's sinful

  404. what we did to Jesus. Very sinful.

  405. And we've crucified

  406. and slain. But that's okay. Verse 24

  407. says, "God raised him up. He loosed the

  408. pains of death. And God did a great

  409. thing um when his son laid down

  410. his life for us. So as we begin to talk

  411. about election then you know the that's

  412. what election is. It's these determined

  413. things that God has determined

  414. that will happen.

  415. And you know some of these doctrines go

  416. go together and you know some of them

  417. don't.

  418. But um predestination we looked at this

  419. morning and election. These two go

  420. together.

  421. You know, God has predestined us

  422. to be elect. And you know, as we said

  423. this morning, if he hadn't done that,

  424. then no one would be saved. We'd all be

  425. we'd be out there with the world, like

  426. the world

  427. in every way.

  428. And uh here we have go back to the book

  429. of Job in chapter 23

  430. Job

  431. and you know we are free moral agents.

  432. Now what that means is that

  433. um

  434. you know we we we were born dead in sins

  435. because of what Adam did to us. Then we

  436. come along and then we um uh as as uh

  437. the book of James says about sin. When

  438. we're enticed then we develop a lust and

  439. we when we develop a lust then we go and

  440. sin and the end of sin is death.

  441. That's what it is. So, we are, you know,

  442. we're responsible for this life that we

  443. live.

  444. Now, before we're saved,

  445. we're in bondage

  446. to sin. We need the the new birth. We

  447. need to be regenerated,

  448. the Bible says. And and uh we need light

  449. and we need life. We talked about that

  450. this morning. But once God gives that to

  451. us, he says, you know, walk in the

  452. light. You know, Jesus is the light.

  453. Walk in the light. So that's what he

  454. wants his elect wants to do. And here in

  455. Job 23 and verse 10,

  456. he says here, he knows the way that I

  457. take.

  458. you know, so God knows, you know, what

  459. color tie you're going to put on or what

  460. color uh shoes you ladies are going to

  461. put on or what purse you're going to

  462. grab. God already knows all those

  463. things. I mean, pretty simple and pretty

  464. basic. But as well, God knows what we

  465. will do with his grace, what we will do

  466. with his mercy,

  467. you know, and that's what that's what

  468. Job says here. When he has tested me, I

  469. will come forth

  470. as gold. My foot has held his steps. His

  471. way have I kept and not decline.

  472. So that's what God wants us to do, to

  473. keep his way, not go another way.

  474. But now that we are uh children of God,

  475. his decrees are that we walk in his

  476. ways. And you know, Job had great

  477. suffering. He had a lot of pain, a lot

  478. of grief, a lot of anguish.

  479. And you know, he didn't curse God and

  480. die like his wife wanted him to.

  481. No, he uh he had a tough life, but he

  482. continued to trust in the Lord

  483. and uh not for what God was giving him,

  484. but for who who God is.

  485. So that will help us in our walk. You

  486. know, there are days that

  487. maybe we're not happy with what we got

  488. for that day,

  489. but God knows and he gives us in his

  490. sovereignty the things that that we need

  491. to continue to trust in him.

  492. And you know, that's God already knows

  493. what Job's going to do. God already

  494. knows what we're going to do. And as we

  495. walk with him and we learn about him,

  496. that's what verse 10 says. He knows the

  497. way that I take.

  498. So, you know, this is how God pours his

  499. his grace and his mercy and his love out

  500. upon us.

  501. And, you know, many people associate the

  502. doctrine of election with with John

  503. Calvin.

  504. And you know that's um a lot of people

  505. say, "Oh, you know, you're a Calvinist.

  506. I'm not a Calvinist."

  507. A lot of people try to associate these

  508. things with him. But before I ever heard

  509. about John Calvin, I believed in

  510. election

  511. because that's what the Bible teaches

  512. us. And you know that's here. How can

  513. you deny

  514. that elections here? How can you deny

  515. it? In that word, sometimes we're

  516. blessed that these words are here. The

  517. word trinity is not here.

  518. But you know, the word elect is here.

  519. The word predestined is here. Seven

  520. times in the New Testament. It says

  521. predestined.

  522. And election appears over and over. Not

  523. just for us

  524. Gentiles in the church age, but as well

  525. for the Jews. They're chosen of God. You

  526. think the Jews would exist if God hadn't

  527. chosen?

  528. I don't think so.

  529. And you know, he God told Abraham, "I'll

  530. bless those that bless you and I'll

  531. curse those that curse you." That's a

  532. decree of God.

  533. So, uh, we see how important sometimes

  534. it is for us to see these things and to

  535. understand them. So,

  536. uh, you know, this is, uh, you know,

  537. it's like the word saint. You know what?

  538. What's that? Well, we're we're set apart

  539. ones for God.

  540. You know, it's nothing that, you know,

  541. we have done. God said, "All right, you

  542. you know, you did enough good deeds. Now

  543. you're going to get the saint badge, you

  544. know, and and I'm going to take you into

  545. heaven." It's not the way this works. We

  546. become saints the moment that we are

  547. saved. And God makes us a saint.

  548. And uh we're in that kind of fellowship

  549. with him. And uh

  550. this is uh

  551. this doctrine is throughout the word of

  552. God. Turn with me if you would to John

    John 17 chapter mention

  553. chapter 17.

  554. John chapter 17

    John 17 chapter mention

  555. and you know

  556. the election is here. predestination is

  557. here and as well we can see Jesus

  558. teaching these very things. You know

  559. this morning we saw Jesus you know

  560. talking about predestination and the

  561. apostles as well coming along after him.

  562. So Jesus taught on these subjects as

  563. well. Go to John 17

  564. and verse 8.

  565. This is the great high priestly prayer

  566. of Jesus. This is God talk. God talking

  567. to God.

  568. And you know those are decrees.

  569. The father has decrees to the son. The

  570. son has decrees back to the father. You

  571. know they're doing the will of God.

  572. They're doing the plan of God. and and

  573. Jesus 33 years on this earth was all

  574. part of God's plan,

  575. you know, to to and that is, you know,

  576. why did God you now, you know, let him

  577. be here 33 years? Why wasn't it 30? Why

  578. wasn't it 40?

  579. Well, that was the will of God.

  580. 33 and a2 years, as a matter of fact.

  581. But God knew the father, the son, the

  582. holy spirit, they all knew what was

  583. going to happen to the son of God. And

  584. here Jesus is praying

  585. to the father.

  586. And notice what he says here in verse

  587. eight.

  588. For I have given unto them

  589. the words which you gave me. They have

  590. received them and they have known surely

  591. that I come out of thee and that they

  592. have believed that you have sent me.

  593. So this is what the elect knows. You

  594. know that's us. We're the elect. We're

  595. the church. This is what we know.

  596. Everybody says, "Well, I believe in God.

  597. I maybe not today, maybe tomorrow. You

  598. know, don't bother me now. Come back

  599. later. You know, come talk to me when

  600. I'm ready to die. I have no use for God.

  601. But Christians, the elect,

  602. you know, it's much different. You know,

  603. we have this, we have these decrees. We

  604. have these promises uh even between the

  605. father and the son that God the father

  606. sent his son to die and pay for our

  607. sins. And here we see then in verse 9, I

  608. pray for them.

  609. I pray not for the world but for them

  610. who you given me. There it is. That's

  611. us. That's the elect.

  612. God the father gave God the son the

  613. elect when before the foundation of the

  614. world. You know we have to add verses

  615. that we know with this. And that's how

  616. we know that. And when that happened, we

  617. weren't there.

  618. But we saw last week that uh God allowed

  619. sin.

  620. You know, he allowed the devil to sin.

  621. He allowed Adam and Eve to sin. You

  622. know, God could have prevented it. God

  623. could have done something different or

  624. something else. He's God.

  625. But what he did, what he allowed

  626. um are a part of his decrees. And

  627. you know, someday we're going to end up

  628. with him. And here Jesus is praying,

  629. you know, it's it's proof that prayer,

  630. you know, we can't change things. Um,

  631. you know, we're a victim of our

  632. circumstances many times, but not God.

  633. You know, God can do anything. He can

  634. change circumstances. he can, you know,

  635. uh,

  636. so many times at work I've had, you

  637. know, this to go and do and this

  638. happened and that happened and, you

  639. know, the end of the day comes and I

  640. didn't get that done

  641. and then something else happens the next

  642. day and I'm like, are you kidding me? I

  643. didn't even know this. You know, God,

  644. the little thing I was worried about,

  645. God was about to wipe out

  646. and wipe out he does. And I'm not saying

  647. God's our big Santa Claus in the sky in

  648. the sky waiting to do everything we ask

  649. of him by any means. I'm just saying

  650. we don't know the future, but he does

  651. and we need to trust him. And here we

  652. see him praying for them, not for the

  653. world. That's us. We're not of the

  654. world. And here's the, you know, there

  655. are decrees to the world. God has made

  656. decrees to the world. We will look at

  657. them in the future. But now we're

  658. looking at God's decrees to his elect.

  659. God's decrees to his own children. And

  660. and that's who we are.

  661. The father gave a gift of the elect to

  662. God the son

  663. for safekeeping. Now turn back to John

    John 15 chapter mention

  664. chapter 15.

  665. And we have, you know, we looked this

  666. morning at the the verses in Ephesians,

  667. and you guys are familiar enough with

  668. those. We don't need to turn there, but

  669. you know, there is where,

  670. you know, God said, "This is my

  671. pleasure." You know, in Romans, Paul

  672. says, you know, are you going to argue

  673. with God,

  674. you know, human being? You know, not all

  675. of God's decrees are creature

  676. comfortable. God is not politically

  677. correct.

  678. you know, you can count on his promises

  679. and and that's what we need to do. We

  680. need to find out what we need to do to

  681. be saved and and to to trust in Jesus.

  682. But,

  683. you know, evil is going to get worse.

  684. The devil is going to get worse. Things

  685. are going to get worse and worse. But

  686. God

  687. uh if we turn back to Revelation, we see

  688. God sending his son into this world

  689. um on a white horse to you know

  690. eliminate the enemies

  691. of God.

  692. So there are a lot of enemies of God.

  693. And I I have a great warning for you. If

  694. you're an enemy of God, you will not

  695. defeat him. No one. God is going. All of

  696. God's enemies have been defeated. Jesus

  697. defeated every one of them on the cross.

  698. Every one of them defeated on the cross.

  699. And we're we're the beneficiaries of all

  700. this that he has done.

  701. And here in John 15:E 19,

  702. here Jesus makes a distinction between

  703. the world and his apostle.

  704. And that's what this doctrine of

  705. election does. We're we're we're not the

  706. world. We uh yeah, we come out of there,

  707. we go back there, we work there, our

  708. friends are there, we you know, we go to

  709. the bank to make our payment, you know,

  710. all those things. We can't leave that,

  711. Paul told the Corinthians, or we have to

  712. just leave the whole world.

  713. But that's a part of this that we have

  714. to deal with. But at the same time,

  715. we're children of God. We're we've been

  716. purchased by the son of God.

  717. You know, the world wants nothing to do

  718. with us. They're of their father, the

  719. devil. And the works of their father,

  720. they will do. But Jesus says here, "If

  721. the world hate you, you know that it

  722. hated me before it hated you. So don't

  723. take it personally.

  724. It's Jesus they hate. All you got to do

  725. is just stop talking about him and stop

  726. being like him and they'll stop hating

  727. you.

  728. But he says if you were of the world,

  729. that's what he said. The world will love

  730. its own. If you're like them, you know,

  731. you're you're in the club. You're in the

  732. anti-God club. You know, you're in the

  733. less sin and you know, we'll worry about

  734. later club, but not us. We're not of the

  735. world.

  736. And the reason we're not, there's only

  737. one reason we're not. And it's nothing

  738. we've done. It's everything that he has

  739. done. He says, "I chosen you

  740. out of the world.

  741. Therefore, the world hates you." Where

  742. did Abraham come from? The of Caldes,

  743. God called him. Where did Israel come

  744. from? God called them. Where did uh the

  745. apostles come from? God called them.

  746. Where did you come from? God called you

  747. and God has called me. This is just an

  748. amazing thing for help us with our

  749. faith. And you know, we would be there.

  750. If we were not chosen by Jesus,

  751. then we'd still be out there with our

  752. buddies in the world. Turn to Colossians

    Colossians 1 chapter mention

  753. chapter 1.

  754. And you know there's a sin has a power

  755. over us. I mean we talked about that a

  756. little this morning. We are slaves. You

  757. know we

  758. you know everybody not everybody sins as

  759. much as they could.

  760. You know but at the same time it's not

  761. the devil made me do it. We're doing it

  762. on our own. We what the Bible says, we

  763. got this old sinful nature in us.

  764. And you know, God wants us to walk

  765. in the new birth, walk in the new man.

  766. And and you know, that's what he has

  767. given to us.

  768. And the Bible says, you know, not only

  769. has God elected us, not only has God

  770. predestinated us, if I can get to the

  771. book of Colossians

  772. in chapter 1, verse 13,

  773. it says here,

  774. who

  775. the who the who

  776. the God who predestinated us, who

  777. elected us. That's the who,

  778. you know, we'd still be there. You say,

  779. "Well, you know, sin is powerful. Sin

  780. gets a hold on us and we can't break

  781. free from it." That's that was my that's

  782. my story before I was saved. I was a I

  783. was a I broke nine of the ten

  784. commandments.

  785. I was pretty much engrossed in sin and

  786. suffering greatly because of it and very

  787. guilty because of it

  788. and I can't deliver myself from this

  789. from sin.

  790. It's not something humans can do.

  791. Only God can do this. That's what the

  792. Bible says. That's why he elected us.

  793. That's why he chose it. Otherwise

  794. um Abel would have been like

  795. uh Cain.

  796. All the apostles would have been like

  797. Judas.

  798. But no, God chose and the reason God

  799. chose is that's the it was his good

  800. pleasure to do these things. And here

  801. Paul tells the Colossians about this

  802. power of God

  803. to deliver us from sin.

  804. That's why we tell sinners the gospel.

  805. Oh yeah, wait. You know, you you need to

  806. believe on Jesus and turn from your sin.

  807. It's a kind of a joint thing there that

  808. you need to do.

  809. And sin has dominion over us even after

  810. we're saved.

  811. But God has provided the Holy Spirit.

  812. God has provided his word to help us uh

  813. fight this fight. And here in Colossians

    Colossians 1:13

  814. 1:13,

  815. who has delivered us from the power of

  816. darkness, there it is. That's what sin

  817. does.

  818. It's darkness. It it um it it takes us

  819. captive.

  820. And you know, we can't do what we wanted

  821. to do anymore.

  822. We have to answer to sin because we

  823. thought it was going to be fun. We

  824. thought it was going to that's what I

  825. needed or to do or whatever. And and and

  826. you know that's what sin does. And then

  827. and then someday we're going to die. And

  828. that's because we're sinners.

  829. You know, we have this new man. We have

  830. been regenerated. We have the Holy

  831. Spirit. We have the truth of God. We

  832. have all these great things that God has

  833. given us. In fact, we lack nothing.

  834. And death is going to do us a favor. The

  835. wages of sin is death. And the gift of

  836. God is eternal life. And God has

  837. delivered us from the power of darkness.

  838. Now, it doesn't stop there. He has

  839. translated us

  840. into the kingdom of his son.

  841. That's what regeneration does. That's

  842. what the new birth does. That's what

  843. believing on the Lord Jesus Christ does.

  844. When we come to God by faith, then all

  845. the blessings of Christ come with us. So

  846. there are two groups of people now.

  847. Those who are going to find the wrath of

  848. God, the judgment of God. We're going to

  849. talk about that. That's where we would

  850. be without election. That's where we

  851. would be without predestination.

  852. These great things that God has done to

  853. deliver us. Turn over to

  854. second Thessalonians

  855. in chapter 2.

  856. What's What was the first book written

  857. in the New Testament?

  858. >> Nope.

  859. Close.

  860. First Thessalonians.

  861. He Paul wrote this before he wrote

  862. Corinthians, but you're right, John.

  863. Right after that. So if we read the

  864. Bible in order that it was written, this

  865. should be in the front.

  866. And and so many people struggle with

  867. signs and wonders and miracles and all

  868. those things. And Paul never mentions

  869. them.

  870. He talks about faith in Jesus. He talks

  871. about everything that Jesus has done for

  872. us.

  873. And here in 2 Thessalonians in chapter

  874. 2,

  875. um,

  876. we find where the mystery of iniquity

  877. already works up there

  878. in verse 7.

  879. And

  880. down in verse 13,

  881. Paul says, "We are bound to give thanks

  882. always for you,

  883. brethren, beloved of the Lord." Wow.

  884. How'd that happen?

  885. Well, the regeneration that the

  886. delivering us from the power of darkness

  887. and God has taken us out of this sinful

  888. wicked heathen world that we were a part

  889. of. I I made my contributions

  890. and they were terrible. But all that's

  891. behind me now and and I'll never answer

  892. for another sin because God chose me

  893. from the foundation of the world. not

  894. just to save me, but to

  895. for me to to end up being like his son.

  896. That's the amazing part. And here Paul

  897. says, "We're we're bound to give thanks,

  898. brethren, beloved of the Lord, because

  899. God,

  900. not you, not me, but God has from the

  901. beginning

  902. chosen you to salvation through

  903. sanctification of the spirit and the

  904. belief of the truth, unto which he

  905. called you by our gospel to obtain the

  906. glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  907. Therefore, my brethren, stand fast and

  908. hold the traditions which you have been

  909. taught. That's it. You know, Paul, he he

  910. doesn't mess around. This is uh you

  911. know, this is one of the greatest

  912. sections in the New Testament. If this

  913. is all we had, this would be enough.

  914. We have much more. But notice what God

  915. has done for us. He chose us from the

  916. beginning. It says here

  917. to salvation.

  918. That's the new birth. That's when we're

  919. born again. That's the day that we said,

  920. "Okay, Lord, I'll rest my faith in your

  921. son and his work for me."

  922. And then but but then it goes on

  923. through sanctification

  924. of the spirit. So God sent his spirit to

  925. me.

  926. So I have the promise of the spirit. The

  927. Holy Spirit is the spirit of promise.

  928. You don't have to ask for it. You're

  929. insulting God when you ask him for the

  930. spirit.

  931. Jesus said, "I I will send him to you."

  932. And the moment you get saved, the Holy

  933. Spirit is a great blessing that God

  934. gives us. That's why we're we aren't

  935. what we used to be

  936. because of God and his spirit.

  937. in the belief of the truth. God has the

  938. God has the cure for sin.

  939. The absolute cure for sin. Don't look

  940. anywhere else.

  941. It's the blood of Jesus. It's the death

  942. of Jesus. He paid for all of our sins.

  943. They are gone as far as the east is from

  944. the west.

  945. And unto which he called you. So God

  946. even calls us. You know, if if he didn't

  947. call us, we wouldn't be saved. You take

  948. any one of these things out, we're out

  949. there with them.

  950. Faith comes by hearing and hearing by

  951. the word of God. And blessed are the

  952. feet of the preachers, you know, and the

  953. teachers because, you know, they come

  954. forth and they speak God's word like

  955. Paul did in Thessalonian.

  956. And that's how this church began.

  957. That's, you know, that's what chapters

  958. one are all about in both books. Paul

  959. says, "The gospel saved you

  960. and I brought it to you and I preached

  961. it to you and I told you about the son

  962. of God who has done this and the spirit

  963. of God and God the father and all these

  964. great things that God has done for us."

  965. In verse 16, now our Lord Jesus Christ

  966. himself and God even our father. You

  967. think Paul believe in the Trinity

  968. who has loved us and given us. We earned

  969. it.

  970. Oh well, God looked out into the future

  971. and he saw who was going to believe. So

  972. those are the ones he elected. That's

  973. the wrong view of election.

  974. Paul shoots that down right here. No,

  975. that means there are some people that

  976. deserve the mercy of God.

  977. No one deserves the mercy of God. No

  978. one. No, not one. Not you, not me, not

  979. anyone deserves the mercy of God.

  980. He just pours it out on us through his

  981. son.

  982. And he loved us.

  983. He's given us an everlasting

  984. consolation. Consolation means comfort.

  985. We can go home tonight, lay our heads

  986. down on the pillow, and know if we die

  987. during the night, we're going to heaven.

  988. Why? Nothing you did, nothing I did. But

  989. God chose us before the foundation of

  990. the world and and brought us to himself

  991. uh through his son. And in verse 17,

  992. comfort your hearts and establish you in

  993. every good work. You don't need miracle

  994. to do a good work.

  995. you only need to um be born again

  996. and through Christ and then you know

  997. these things are given to us by our

  998. great God.

  999. So

1000. you know over in chapter one go to first

    1 Thessalonians 1 chapter mention

  1001. Thessalonians chapter 1

1002. and this book was written just shortly

  1003. before that.

1004. You know how every church in the New

  1005. Testament was started?

1006. By the word of God, by the preaching of

  1007. the gospel of Jesus.

1008. So churches begin, you know, that's how

  1009. I that's, you know, that's what happened

1010. to me. I was born again.

1011. You know, I trusted, you know, the

1012. promise of God. I took God at his word.

1013. you know, I uh believed on the Lord

1014. Jesus Christ as my savior. All those

1015. things I did one night about midnight

1016. um a long long time ago.

  1017. But that

1018. is where the new birth began. And it is

1019. so with the church. Every time God

1020. starts a church, somebody gets saved.

1021. That's what happened all the way through

1022. the book of Acts. It's still going on.

1023. How did Mike Brunk start his church?

  1024. He's He's coming.

  1025. He's here. But he'll tell you. I was

1026. over there. Some of you been over there.

1027. One of the fellows that he was

1028. ministering to finally said, "You know

  1029. what?

1030. This is truth. I need to get saved."

1031. And they got saved. And bingo, that's

1032. church started right then and there. And

1033. then it it sort of spread out. That's

1034. what happens. Somebody gets saved and

1035. it's like the Philippian jailer,

1036. you know, he believed and then he went

1037. home with his whole house.

  1038. So

1039. God works miraculously and delivering us

  1040. from our sin.

1041. And over here in 1 Thessalonians chapter

    1 Thessalonians 1 chapter mention

  1042. 1,

1043. you know, that's why Paul can say,

  1044. you know,

1045. how could we face tomorrow if we didn't

  1046. know we were saved?

  1047. Well, you know, I don't know. I don't

1048. know if I'm really going to make it or

  1049. not.

  1050. You know, after all,

1051. uh, this takes away all that.

1052. You know, I I I am chosen of God to come

1053. to him through his son, and he's given

1054. me eternal life and everything else that

  1055. goes with it.

1056. How can I doubt God and his word? How

1057. can I doubt God and his work on my

  1058. behalf?

1059. And Paul never says anything like that

1060. to these churches. Well, you know what?

1061. I hope you guys hang on to the end.

  1062. No, he says

1063. uh here in verse one, God the Father and

1064. the Lord Jesus Christ, grace be unto you

1065. and peace from God our father and the

1066. Lord Jesus Christ. That's what Paul said

1067. to every church except one.

1068. And he says we give thanks to God.

1069. That's what this doctrine should do for

1070. us. We should be thanking God. I should

1071. be thanking God that you are one of the

  1072. elect

1073. and and and vice versa, you know, and

1074. and our children and our friends and our

  1075. family,

1076. you know, this hopefully has spread to

1077. them and you can become one of the

1078. elect. Uh just, you know, the whosoever

1079. will may come. We talked about that this

  1080. morning, too.

1081. But, you know, this is God's decree.

1082. This is God's plan. And this is God's

  1083. purpose.

1084. And you know, we're in on this. We're

1085. we're the elect. And we've done nothing

1086. to cause God to save us. And it's 100%

  1087. through his mercy

1088. that he has done this.

1089. And uh again, you know, we have to keep

1090. the human stuff out of it. Oh, God. You

1091. know, he he knew who was going to

1092. believe. So those are the ones that he

  1093. elected.

1094. No, that's a wrong view of this um in in

1095. many ways because of what Romans says.

  1096. You know, God chose

1097. Jacob before he had ever done anything

  1098. good or bad.

1099. So that's our God. He knows everything,

1100. his fornowledge. And and he predestines

1101. according to his will, the good pleasure

  1102. of his will.

1103. And you know when it when it comes to

1104. this doctrine, we have to be like like

1105. John told us to be and test the spirits

1106. and like Paul told us uh in first

1107. Timothy to test the spirit.

1108. And anyone who doesn't believe this,

1109. you know what spirit are they of? You

1110. know, they're not of the Holy Spirit

1111. because this is the truth of God's word.

1112. This comes from God. This is God's great

1113. truth. You know, whether we, you know,

1114. just now beginning to understand this

1115. or, you know, we've been I've been saved

1116. for a long long time and 40ome years

  1117. and,

1118. you know, this is in the Bible. We can't

  1119. run from it.

1120. And the word election is here. And

1121. that's exactly what it means. God

1122. predestined and God elected a group of

1123. people to have eternal life. That's why

1124. Paul can say in Romans,

1125. justified freely by his grace.

1126. And that's this great salvation that we

1127. have. God didn't see who, you know, who

1128. needed a little more mercy than anyone.

1129. We're all We all fall short and we're

1130. all we're all sinners and we're all

1131. enemies of God. all those things that uh

1132. Paul tells us in Romans chapter 5.

    Romans 5 chapter mention

1133. But you know, God is wise and

1134. understanding and gracious and and all

1135. those great things that God is. He's all

  1136. of them at once.

1137. So, as we go back and look at what he

1138. did, how he did it, you know, we have to

1139. say what Paul said. are you're going to

  1140. find fault with God?

1141. And we say, "Nope. No, Lord. I'm not

1142. going to find fault with you. You know,

1143. everything and and uh you know, these

1144. great things should bring us comfort."

1145. And we should agree that he elected us

1146. before the foundation of the world. He

1147. chose us before the foundation of the

1148. world. We We're real sinners, you know.

1149. I I just thank God for, you know, what

1150. he's done for me. And I know you thank

1151. God for what he's done for you. And,

1152. you know, he shouldn't have saved me.

  1153. I'm I'm I'm like Paul. I'm a terrible

  1154. sinner. I'm a wretched sinner.

1155. But sometimes those are the people God

  1156. saved.

1157. You know, uh, not many, Paul says to the

1158. Corinthians, not many wise men after the

  1159. flesh

  1160. are called.

1161. But, you know, God shows us his plan.

1162. Who built this house we're in? God. Who

1163. built this world we're in? God. Can he

1164. not start it and run it and finish it

1165. the way that he wants?

1166. Oh, I think he can.

1167. and he's shared all that with us in his

1168. word so that we could trust him and

1169. know, you know, there's uh there's no

  1170. merit in us.

1171. And if he hadn't elected us, we'd be

1172. just like everyone else out there.

1173. And you know, uh people have, you know,

  1174. we lost the ability

1175. in the garden with Adam not to sin.

1176. We lost it and we inherited our sin

1177. nature from Adam. And then we come along

1178. and we do our thing and you know God has

  1179. elected us to be

1180. um saved and justified and that great

1181. golden chain that we talked about in

  1182. Romans sanctified.

  1183. I hope

  1184. I was a I was a pretty bad sinner and I

  1185. I still sin,

1186. but not like I did back then.

1187. And it's the grace of God and the mercy

1188. of God and the love of God, the word of

1189. God, the light, the spirit, these great

1190. gifts that God has given to us, not

1191. because we deserve them, but because

1192. he's given them to us in his son.

1193. So we can continue to trust this God who

1194. has elected us from the foundation of

1195. the world. And again that word election

1196. is all over the place. And and again

1197. Paul told the Corinthians, you guys have

1198. rejected the grace of God. And people do

1199. that. You give the gospel to them.

1200. You're like, hey man, they say, hey,

1201. what happened to you? Oh, let me tell

1202. you. And you share with them what

1203. happened. and they're like, "Oh, wow. I

  1204. don't,

1205. you know, I'm not interested in that."

1206. And um they reject the grace of God.

1207. You know, they take all God's benefits.

1208. They love breathing his air.

1209. You know, they love, you know, uh

1210. enjoying the great outdoors and all

1211. those things that God has done for them

1212. even though they're dead in their

1213. trespasses and sins. and we'd be right

1214. there with them if God hadn't chose us

1215. before the foundation of the world. And

1216. you know, that's what happens. The

1217. gospel comes along and the elect believe

  1218. the gospel

1219. because of a preacher and a teacher.

1220. And again, it's not any good in us.

1221. And we don't deserve the mercy of God.

1222. And again, we don't want to argue with

1223. God, but he he does as he pleases.

1224. That's why Paul, you know, can can say

1225. and in and uh go to Romans 3 and I'll

  1226. quit.

  1227. Romans chapter 3,

    Romans 3 chapter mention

  1228. Romans chapter 3.

    Romans 3 chapter mention

1229. And here in verse 26,

  1230. uh Paul here,

1231. this is just an incredible

  1232. section on

1233. things that we have been talking about

1234. God taking the initiative to save us.

1235. And it says there being justified freely

1236. by his grace. If it wasn't for God's

1237. mercy, there's no there's no merit in

1238. us. There's no reason for God to justify

  1239. us. Not one.

1240. But God did it anyway through the

  1241. redemption

1242. that is in Christ Jesus whom God set

  1243. forth. There's a big word to be a

  1244. propitiation

  1245. through faith.

1246. You know, God set it up this way

1247. that we would come to him through faith

1248. to have this remission of sin. This is

1249. God's plan. Who's going to argue with

1250. God? Well, the devil tries to. People

  1251. try to,

1252. but no one can argue with what God has

  1253. done

1254. in in electing some and choosing some

  1255. and passing over others.

1256. We can't lay anything to the charge of

  1257. God.

  1258. Charge God with anything.

1259. 26 to declare I say at this time his

1260. righteousness God's that he might be

1261. just and the justifier of him who

1262. believes in Jesus or boasting there is

1263. no boasting and he goes on

  1264. so God

1265. can make an ungodly unrighteous filthy

  1266. sinner

  1267. clean

1268. through the blood of his

1269. And that's the way he wants us to come.

1270. You know, all the elect will come. That

1271. whosoever will come. If you're not

  1272. saved, come

1273. come to God and receive from him this

1274. great gift of eternal life. And you can

1275. we can have it through faith.

1276. You know, we uh extend our faith to God

  1277. in these things.

1278. And then Paul deals with this again here

1279. in chapter 4. And I got to wrap things

  1280. up. But

1281. thank you all for coming out tonight.

1282. And let's close in prayer.

1283. Father, we thank you for your word. We

  1284. thank you for the

1285. for the light that it is,

  1286. Father,

1287. to bring us to salvation.

1288. And we didn't know we were such sinners.

1289. We didn't know we were so guilty. And

1290. you you showed us, Father, that we were

1291. and that we are. And you are holy. And

1292. you cannot look on sin,

1293. but you have found a way to be

  1294. propitious and

1295. uh gracious and loving and kind to us

1296. sinners, Father, through your son,

1297. through his through his birth,

1298. uh through his life, and through his

1299. death. Now we can have

1300. um a place at the table with him because

1301. you chose us before the foundation of

1302. the world that we might um be made a new

1303. by him and for him and receive the glory

1304. that he's going to receive when we get

  1305. to heaven.

1306. You've been so gracious to us. You've

1307. been so kind to us and merciful to us,

1308. Father. and we don't deserve a bit of

1309. it, but we thank you for it. We praise

1310. you for it this evening and we thank you

  1311. in Jesus name. Amen.

  1312. >> Amen.

1313. >> Stand with us and turn to page 90.

1314. Lord, as we go from this place,

1315. loving you more, trusting you more.

1316. May the power of your love and the light

  1317. of your word shine

1318. to a sin darkened world.

1319. As we go from this
