  1. After the death of Moses, the servant of the Lord, the Lord said to Joshua, the son of Nun, Moses' assistant.

  2. Moses, my servant, is dead. Now therefore arise, go over this Jordan, you and all this people, into the land that I am giving to them, to the people of Israel.

  3. Every place that the sole of your foot will tread upon, I have given to you, just as I promised to Moses.

  4. From the wilderness and this Lebanon, as far as the great river, the river Euphrates, all the land of the Hittites, to the great sea, toward the going down of the sun, shall be your territory.

  5. No man shall be able to stand before you all the days of your life. Just as I was with Moses, so I will be with you. I will not leave you or forsake you.

  6. Be strong and courageous, for you shall cause this people to inherit the land that I swore to their fathers to give them.

  7. Only be strong and very courageous, being careful to do according to all the law that Moses, my servant, commanded you.

  8. Do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may have good success wherever you go.

  9. This book of the law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it.

  10. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.

  11. For have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous.

  12. Do not be frightened. Do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.

  13. We are starting a new sermon series this morning. It's on the book of Joshua.

  14. But just a bit of information that will help situate us as we get into the text.

  15. So Joshua comes at the very, it comes immediately after the five books of Moses.

  16. If you're unfamiliar with the Bible, the Bible opens up with five books, but they're really like a chunk.

  17. They're like a big story in and of themselves.

  18. It's the history of God's interaction with his creation, and then with the nation of Israel.

  19. We see in it the nation of Israel becoming slaves in Egypt.

  20. And then the huge chunk of the rest of these five books really detail God's salvation.

  21. But then this wandering season of Israel through the desert as they're making their way to this promised land flowing with milk and honey that was promised to them by God to Abraham, their father.

  22. So in many ways, Joshua is, it's like a sequel to like a trilogy, but in this case, whatever trilogy with five, I don't know.

  23. But it's, it comes immediately after.

  24. But it's really a continuing story of what the Bible opened with.

  25. So it's really important for us to know as we get into it, who is this Joshua figure?

  26. Three important details, and I am skimming, like skimming of skimming here when I'm outlining these for us.

  27. So three important details about Joshua.

  28. He's a military commander.

  29. He was one of Israel's mighty men who fought against, specifically this one great battle against this people called the Amalekites.

  30. As Israel was leaving Egypt, they were weak, they were vulnerable, and this very cruel tribe came to attack them, to take advantage of them.

  31. And the Lord used Joshua as a military commander to win the day.

  32. The second big detail about Joshua is that he was an assistant to Moses.

  33. Now, it says that right in verse one, but it'll say that throughout the Mosaic books as well.

  34. He is Moses' assistant, like his right-hand man.

  35. So he was there, not beside Moses, but very close to Moses, when Moses received the law from God.

  36. When Moses would commune with God and mediate between God and the nation of Israel.

  37. And then the third and final point that I want to draw your attention to when we're considering Joshua,

  38. is that after Israel left Egypt, they made their way to the Promised Land.

  39. And they were on the verge of crossing it.

  40. And Moses sent a representative from each of the 12 tribes into the land to scout it out.

  41. They were like a recon party.

  42. And they came back, and the information that they had about this place was that it was full of very scary, scary people.

  43. They were strong.

  44. They were technologically advanced.

  45. In fact, nobody could stand up against them.

  46. Ten of the 12 said that.

  47. But Joshua and another character, which we won't touch on too much in this series, Caleb,

  48. they said, no, no, no, no, no, no.

  49. Yeah, the reports are completely right.

  50. But we should go in there because God has promised us victory.

  51. And he will be the one who fights for us.

  52. So we see in Joshua this remarkable character who really was like the right-hand man of God's right-hand man.

  53. So we find ourselves now 40 years later after what I just described with those 12 spies,

  54. those 12 representatives who went in for a recon mission.

  55. 40 years had passed because 10 of them were naysayers.

  56. Two of them were like, we're going to seize this place with God's help.

  57. But the rest of the nation of Israel, they fell into fear.

  58. And God saw their unbelief and said, not now.

  59. They went back into the desert.

  60. And 40 years would go by until Joshua 1 takes place.

  61. 40 years later.

  62. So Joshua, we find, he is not a young man.

  63. He is a seasoned military general.

  64. He is a remarkable man in the hierarchy of Israel.

  65. He is a man of faith.

  66. And here we are.

  67. This book was written some 1,200 years ago, maybe even 1,200 years ago,

  68. 3,200 years ago, maybe even 3,500 years ago.

  69. And yet, in these 20-odd chapters, we see a remarkable story that's worthy of our study this morning.

  70. But I'll say this before we get into it.

  71. One last point, and then we'll get into the text.

  72. This book isn't without controversy.

  73. This book will, at first glance, seem to endorse divinely mandated genocide,

  74. slavery, collective punishment, racial supremacy, among other things.

  75. Again, I said on first glance, on our first reading.

  76. And these are things that are reprehensible.

  77. There's no way around it.

  78. We're going to encounter some really difficult passages that we're going to wrestle through.

  79. But that's the thing.

  80. We're going to wrestle through it.

  81. So our commitment as a church, my commitment as a pastor,

  82. as I open up God's Word, is always to walk towards the difficulties that we find in Scripture

  83. and ask the tough questions and wrestle with the text.

  84. So that's what we'll be doing in the weeks to come.

  85. We're not going to be doing it so much today.

  86. For today, we're going to look just at these first nine verses that David read for us

  87. that really will set the stage for the entire book.

  88. And in them, we'll find something deeply reassuring.

  89. These verses are deeply reassuring.

  90. For they're going to communicate the Lord's infinite love for his people.

  91. And these people that he's going to communicate his infinite love for,

  92. they are a broken people.

  93. They're a fearful people.

  94. They're a confused people.

  95. A people constantly given over to temptation.

  96. To not trust the God who time and again has rescued them.

  97. But to trust in other gods or the strength of men.

  98. There are people stricken with deep doubt that the Lord is not actually truly for them.

  99. There are people that are scared and cowardly.

  100. And I'll humbly put forward to you this morning,

  101. there are people a lot like us.

  102. So this book is actually very relevant for us.

  103. Again, it could be potentially 3,500 years old.

  104. And yet it somehow, in a brilliant way, captures the human condition for us.

  105. That still exists in 2026 in Ottawa.

  106. So this morning, we will see how the Lord, he sees that brokenness.

  107. He sees that fear.

  108. He sees that lack of courage.

  109. And he reassures his people and strengthens them.

  110. And assures them of his goodness.

  111. And he does it in two ways.

  112. Or at least that's the way I'm going to break up this text.

  113. He does that through his kept promises, one.

  114. And then second, through his loving presence.

  115. So his kept promises and loving presence.

  116. Why don't we jump right into our text.

  117. I'll read verse 1 and you can follow along.

  118. We're on page 6 on the scripture journals.

  119. After the death of Moses, the servant of the Lord,

  120. The Lord said to Joshua, the son of Nun, or Nun, Moses' assistant.

  121. I'll read verse 2.

  122. Moses, my servant, is dead.

  123. Moses, my servant, is dead.

  124. The book takes place right after a funeral.

  125. And a very significant funeral.

  126. Moses was the servant of the Lord.

  127. It's interesting.

  128. This is like, keep in the back of your mind and make like a little note here.

  129. Moses is the servant of the Lord, but Joshua's called Moses' assistant.

  130. The servant of the Lord is like a very lofty title.

  131. It's not just thrown around.

  132. God just doesn't give it to anybody.

  133. He's given it to Moses.

  134. Moses is something of like a superstar.

  135. He is Israel's, I mean, God is the one who rescued Israel.

  136. But Moses is the one, humanly speaking,

  137. he is the one who led them through the Red Sea.

  138. He is the one who led them through the wilderness.

  139. He is the one who stood up to the most powerful regional king in that day.

  140. He is the one of faith who received the law from God on Mount Sinai.

  141. If you've seen The Ten Commandments with Charlton Heston, fantastic movie.

  142. He has the two tablets, the two big giant stone tablets that he brings down from the mountain.

  143. He's the one who disciplines and chastises the people.

  144. Well, he is, okay, again, apart from God, Moses is everything to Israel.

  145. And now they're on the verge of going into the promised land.

  146. The time when they'll need Moses the most, okay?

  147. And he's dead.

  148. I wonder if there was great dread that fell on the people in this moment.

  149. Their savior, their champion, he had died.

  150. Who would mediate between the Lord and his people?

  151. Who would lead them into the promised land?

  152. Moses is gone.

  153. Who would step up?

  154. And then we see Joshua here.

  155. Okay?

  156. Again, Joshua has done wonderful things.

  157. He has not been given this title of servant of the Lord.

  158. He is the assistant to the servant of the Lord.

  159. And does he have what it takes to lead Israel, to be a new Moses?

  160. You see, Joshua finds himself back on the borderland, like I mentioned, not as a young man when he originally was on the border.

  161. He has wandered for 40 years, okay, in the desert.

  162. 40 years of wandering is God's promises.

  163. Are they going to come true?

  164. 40 years.

  165. 40 years.

  166. All right?

  167. If you have children, you can promise them, listen, if you do your chores, you know, you study hard in school, you have a good week, I promise you ice cream on the weekend.

  168. Or you promise them a treat.

  169. How long is that week for a child, okay?

  170. It's exhausting for them.

  171. They ask a million times.

  172. You're exhausted for weathering this onslaught of question after question.

  173. If you wait a week and you don't give them what you promised them, they might keep asking, but after a while they will think that you are somebody who doesn't keep promises.

  174. What happens if a couple weeks, a couple months, a couple months, a couple months, turns into four decades?

  175. Is God's promise still true?

  176. Does God still, is he still worthy of our trust?

  177. It's a remarkable question.

  178. Again, 40 years long.

  179. And now he is at the verge.

  180. The nation is at the verge of entering this promised land and their savior has died.

  181. Their hero has died.

  182. What will happen?

  183. Well, let's read verses two to five and see God's reaction.

  184. Verse two.

  185. Moses, my servant, is dead.

  186. Now, therefore, arise, go over this Jordan and you and all this people into the land that I am giving to them, to the people of Israel.

  187. Every place that the sole of your foot will tread upon, I have given to you, just as I promised to Moses.

  188. From the wilderness and this Lebanon, as far as the great river, the river Euphrates, all the land of the Hittites to the great sea, that's the Mediterranean Sea,

  189. toward the going down of the sun shall be your territory.

  190. Verse five.

  191. No man shall be able to stand before you all the days of your life, just as I was with Moses.

  192. So I will be with you.

  193. I will not leave you or forsake you.

  194. What wonderful words to an anxious man.

  195. I'm assuming he's anxious.

  196. The text doesn't say so.

  197. But we'll see in the next part, especially, the Lord has to say three times, be strong and courageous to him.

  198. So maybe he was anxious.

  199. What incredible words, though, to bolster his heart.

  200. You see, Moses is dead.

  201. He is.

  202. And he is a champion.

  203. And there will never be another Moses.

  204. Joshua won't be another Moses.

  205. But here's the wonderful thing about this.

  206. Even though Moses is dead, the Lord God is not.

  207. And if God isn't dead, then his promises, they will have to endure.

  208. They must.

  209. In fact, nothing can derail the promises of God, not even the death of his servant.

  210. But the promises referenced here, just really briefly, it is for the entire land of Canaan, what was described there, from the east down to the south, to the sea, up to the north.

  211. It covers a lot of the modern-day Levant, much greater than the, I mean, it's parts of Syria, parts of Lebanon, all of Israel, parts of Egypt.

  212. Like, it's a huge, it's a huge area of land.

  213. And God swore to Abraham, centuries and centuries and centuries earlier, that he would give him and his descendants this land.

  214. And it's a big deal, not only because it was promised by God centuries earlier, but also because they have been wandering for decades as nomads, as people that are strangers.

  215. And even before that, they were slaves in a foreign land.

  216. The people of Israel have been without a place.

  217. They've been without a place.

  218. And this is a remarkable thing, because maybe we don't take this in like we should, but having a place is a very important thing for us.

  219. Having a place that we can come back to, a place where we can lay our head, a place that is ours.

  220. Whether or not we rent or own, it is, this is my home.

  221. You know, what's remarkable is that even people that are homeless find ways to make makeshift shelters a home.

  222. It's theirs.

  223. Place is such an important thing for the human condition, for the human being.

  224. But God, here he is, he hasn't forgotten his promises.

  225. And nor does he need the prowess or strength of a certain man or a certain group of people to ensure that his promises will be fulfilled.

  226. God is always faithful to fulfill his promises.

  227. The Lord always fulfills his promises because he makes these things called the covenant.

  228. So, if you're unfamiliar, I mean, we've talked about this throughout the summer and I've talked about it in the past.

  229. God makes these covenants with people.

  230. Covenants aren't unique to the Bible.

  231. They were kind of a thing you do in the ancient world.

  232. I mean, we still talk in terms of covenantal language when we're making agreements.

  233. But essentially, it is an agreement between two parties.

  234. There are parameters set up.

  235. If you do this, you will get that.

  236. If you don't do this, you will suffer certain consequences.

  237. And God makes these covenantal promises with his people, but always in such a way that puts the onus on him.

  238. Because the people that he makes these covenants with, they constantly break covenant.

  239. They constantly fail to achieve and to fulfill their side of the bargain.

  240. But God never fails.

  241. So, God is always fulfilling his covenantal promises, this being one of them.

  242. And he does it through a mediator.

  243. He always speaks to Israel, to his people, through a representative.

  244. Okay?

  245. There's always somebody who stands in the gap between God and his people.

  246. If you're a bit of a Bible nerd, this is a priestly role.

  247. A mediator.

  248. A priestly role.

  249. God always has a type of priestly mediator between him and his people.

  250. So, when the mediator dies, in this case Moses, what we see here is God not panicking.

  251. Okay?

  252. God isn't like, well, I knew this would happen one day.

  253. Time to enact my contingency plan.

  254. It's not like God in the heavenlies has a giant red button with a glass case that says break in case of emergency.

  255. And then all of a sudden the issue is solved.

  256. Not at all.

  257. God's promises continue and someone else is raised up and empowered.

  258. Why?

  259. Because the Lord cannot be denied in keeping his promises.

  260. To this point, the French reformer John Calvin says this in his commentary on this very passage.

  261. He says this, quote,

  262. This suggests the very useful reflection that while men are cut off by death and fall in the middle of their career,

  263. the faithfulness of God never fails.

  264. On the death of Moses, a sad change seemed impending.

  265. The people were left like a body with its head lopped off.

  266. While thus in danger of dispersion, not only did the truth of God prove itself to be immortal,

  267. but it was shown in the person of Joshua as in a bright mirror that when God takes away those whom he has adorned with special gifts,

  268. he has others in readiness to supply their place.

  269. And that though he is pleased for a time to give excellent gifts to some,

  270. his mighty power is not tied down to them.

  271. I think it's just a wonderful truth to remember.

  272. The Lord delights in caring for his people and nothing will get in his way.

  273. No one in this congregation, at least not to my knowledge,

  274. and if you are, talk with us.

  275. We'll get you help.

  276. But nobody, I think, is homeless or on the verge of homelessness.

  277. But the sense of unease in life is real.

  278. The sense that your place in life is in jeopardy.

  279. Do you not feel the anxiety about missing opportunities to advance your career?

  280. That you've missed out on chances to spend time with those around you

  281. because you are busy chasing whatever goals you might be chasing.

  282. That your priorities are in the wrong spot.

  283. The dread about relationships that continue to go unreconciled.

  284. Okay?

  285. All of these things, they shake us to our core.

  286. Makes us feel like our place isn't very secure.

  287. That our foundations are starting to crumble.

  288. Our common experience as human beings is not necessarily one of consistent confidence,

  289. although we are pretty good at putting on a face.

  290. And I don't think sometimes you've got to kind of grin and bear it

  291. and get on with life in certain respects.

  292. But I would think that the common experience is actually one of anxiety.

  293. We make decisions oftentimes not out of a great confidence in the future,

  294. but in fear of failure.

  295. We hedge our bets.

  296. We lay awake with racing minds.

  297. We have anxious hearts.

  298. But consider that God's promises to his people,

  299. they are always towards provision and blessing.

  300. They're always towards provision and blessing.

  301. His promises are there where he says to Joshua here,

  302. that he will not leave or forsake him.

  303. Those promises are extended to us.

  304. I don't have the chapter and verse,

  305. but read Hebrews 13.

  306. The author of Hebrews, he picks up this refrain.

  307. I will not leave you or forsake you in Hebrews 13.

  308. What does Jesus say when he commissions the disciples

  309. in the Great Commission in Matthew 28?

  310. What does he say?

  311. He says,

  312. Lo, I will be with you to the end of the age.

  313. This is God's promises to his people, always.

  314. They're always promises towards provision and blessing,

  315. to not forsake us or leave us, but to bless us.

  316. Which means that he has made a dear covenant with us that won't be broken.

  317. He is bound to see to our welfare and not just in a begrudging way,

  318. but because he is bound to it, but because he delights in doing so.

  319. Let me just read a couple of verses from Matthew chapter 6,

    Matthew 6 chapter mention

  320. from the Sermon on the Mount.

  321. It's the famous sermon of Jesus's.

  322. And this is what he says, chapter 6, starting in the 25th verse.

  323. Therefore, I tell you, do not be anxious about your life,

  324. what you will eat or drink or about your body.

  325. What you will put on is not life more than food and the body more than clothing.

  326. Look at the birds of the air.

  327. They neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns,

  328. and yet your heavenly Father feeds them.

  329. Are you not more valuable than they?

  330. And which of you, by being anxious, can add a single hour to his life?

  331. And why are you anxious about clothing?

  332. Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow.

  333. They neither toil nor spin.

  334. Yet I tell you, even Solomon, in all his glory,

  335. was not arrayed like one of these.

  336. But if God so clothes the grass of the field,

  337. which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven,

  338. will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?

  339. He delights in providing for you.

  340. Who looks after our welfare with such commitment and love?

  341. We live in a society that has really remarkable infrastructure to take care of people.

  342. But they don't do it perfectly, not by a long shot.

  343. And they don't do it out of a desire to love the citizens.

  344. We have some public service workers here.

  345. We thank you for your service.

  346. How often do you go to work and think,

  347. I love the people of Canada.

  348. I am here for them.

  349. I am going to lay down my life for their welfare.

  350. I mean, you have different convictions.

  351. Some days you go in, you're just there for the paycheck.

  352. Other days you're finding joy in work.

  353. But do you extend, if this is your position,

  354. do you extend the same type of love and care towards the people you are serving

  355. that God extends to you?

  356. Who loves us?

  357. Who is about our welfare like the Lord God?

  358. He is a covenant-keeping God.

  359. He makes promises and he keeps them.

  360. So the Lord, here we have him assuring Joshua

  361. that he would keep his promise to give the land as a gift.

  362. He knew that both Joshua and especially the people would waver.

  363. And we'll see this in the weeks to come.

  364. Their confidence would give way to fear.

  365. And they would face the same issues that caused them to be wanderers

  366. for 40 years in the desert.

  367. So therefore God would remind them that along with keeping his promises,

  368. he would also be with them.

  369. And this is the second point.

  370. His presence would be with his people.

  371. And why is this so significant?

  372. Look with me at verses 5 and then we'll read to the end of the chapter.

  373. Starting in verse 5 here.

  374. No man shall be able to stand before you all the days of your life

  375. just as I was with Moses, so I will be with you.

  376. Here it is.

  377. I will not leave you or forsake you.

  378. Verse 6.

  379. Be strong and courageous for you shall cause this people to inherit the land

  380. that I swore to their fathers to give them.

  381. Only be strong and very courageous.

  382. Being careful to do according to all the law that Moses my servant commanded you.

  383. Do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left

  384. that you may have good success wherever you go.

  385. So this book of the law or the Torah or God's ways shall not depart from your mouth,

  386. but you shall meditate on it day and night

  387. so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it.

  388. For then you will make your way prosperous

  389. and then you will have good success.

  390. Verse 9.

  391. Have I not commanded you?

  392. Be strong and courageous.

  393. Do not be frightened.

  394. And do not be dismayed.

  395. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.

  396. Such a reality is often lost on God's people

  397. that he is with them.

  398. For God is spirit.

  399. He is not seen.

  400. He is not like you or I that we can interact with face to face like this.

  401. Therefore his presence, again, can be easily doubted.

  402. What if God isn't actually there?

  403. What if we are believing in a myth?

  404. What if this is just a great religious hoax that happened,

  405. say, 2,000 years ago, 3,500 years ago, 4,000 years ago,

  406. and somehow it just got perpetuated,

  407. and now there's some powerful people

  408. that just kind of make us feel guilty

  409. so that they would give us money and we could control them.

  410. What if God has abandoned us?

  411. How can we be sure that he is truly with his people?

  412. Four verses the Lord tells Joshua,

  413. and by extension the people,

  414. to be strong and courageous three times.

  415. Four, or three times in four verses.

  416. Verse six, be strong and courageous.

  417. Verse seven, only be strong and courageous.

  418. Verse nine, have I not commanded you,

  419. be strong and courageous.

  420. And then continues, do not be frightened,

  421. do not be dismayed.

  422. The Lord is telling Joshua

  423. that they are to be,

  424. him and the people,

  425. they are not to give in to fear.

  426. They need to be strong.

  427. They need to have courage.

  428. And what's incredible about those three

  429. commands,

  430. and this is key.

  431. If you're ever reading the Bible

  432. and you notice something like this,

  433. read it again.

  434. Have your ears perk up to it.

  435. See it with fresh eyes.

  436. Because God, he says,

  437. be strong,

  438. be courageous.

  439. Be strong, be courageous.

  440. Be strong, be courageous.

  441. But he sandwiches those three commands

  442. in between what?

  443. What does he say in verse five?

  444. I will be with you

  445. and I will not leave you

  446. or forsake you.

  447. And then verse nine,

  448. he says,

  449. for the Lord your God is with you

  450. wherever you go.

  451. You see,

  452. God,

  453. he knows that courage.

  454. He knows that strength.

  455. They are hard to come by.

  456. So this whole section

  457. is sandwiched

  458. in God's promise

  459. to give his people

  460. his presence.

  461. That he would be with them

  462. all their days.

  463. So just consider this

  464. for a moment.

  465. God is not commanding

  466. strength and courage

  467. because of military might.

  468. Not because,

  469. you know,

  470. okay,

  471. Moses was,

  472. he was a great leader

  473. but now we have Joshua.

  474. He's the man for the job

  475. because he's a general.

  476. He's a proven warrior.

  477. He doesn't say,

  478. listen,

  479. be strong and courageous.

  480. Think positively.

  481. This is the key

  482. to getting the land.

  483. Okay?

  484. Think,

  485. pessimism,

  486. put it to the side,

  487. be optimists.

  488. That's how you're gonna

  489. win the day.

  490. He doesn't say any of that.

  491. Instead,

  492. he says to them,

  493. be strong and courageous

  494. because I'm amongst you.

  495. I have your back.

  496. I am before you.

  497. I am behind you.

  498. So how will we know

  499. this unseen God

  500. is truly near?

  501. Because it's

  502. very important

  503. for our courage

  504. and our strength.

  505. How do we know

  506. he is gonna be near?

  507. How can

  508. the Israelites,

  509. how can they draw

  510. strength and courage

  511. from this reality?

  512. Or put another way,

  513. how can they

  514. and us,

  515. how can we

  516. feed our faith

  517. that God

  518. is real and close

  519. especially when faced

  520. with impossible

  521. circumstances?

  522. It's a really

  523. important question.

  524. The Lord is gonna

  525. reveal it to Joshua

  526. and this is what he says,

  527. verse 7 and 8

  528. one more time.

  529. Only be strong

  530. and very courageous.

  531. Here it is.

  532. Being careful to do

  533. according to all

  534. the law that Moses,

  535. my servant,

  536. commanded you.

  537. Do not turn from it

  538. to the right hand

  539. or to the left

  540. that you may have

  541. good success

  542. wherever you go.

  543. This book of the law

  544. shall not depart

  545. from your mouth

  546. but you shall meditate

  547. on it day and night

  548. so that you may be

  549. careful to do

  550. according to all

  551. that is written in it.

  552. For,

  553. then you will make

  554. your way prosperous

  555. and then you will

  556. have good success.

  557. Strength and courage,

  558. it comes from

  559. knowing and keeping,

  560. knowing that God

  561. is amongst us

  562. and we know that

  563. because he has given us

  564. his very word.

  565. He has given us

  566. his law.

  567. Like I mentioned

  568. when I read it

  569. the first time,

  570. it says the book

  571. of the law,

  572. it would be better

  573. translated in

  574. God's book of instructions

  575. or God communicating

  576. his ways.

  577. The law that he gave

  578. to Moses,

  579. it certainly does have

  580. laws within it

  581. but it also spells out

  582. so much of what it means

  583. to be human

  584. and how to interact

  585. with the one true God

  586. and describing God's holiness

  587. and his perfection

  588. and his beauty.

  589. God is saying,

  590. I have revealed

  591. myself to you.

  592. I have given you

  593. my word.

  594. Think about it.

  595. Meditate on it.

  596. Interesting,

  597. this is primarily

  598. an oral culture

  599. so when it's

  600. meditate on it,

  601. I mean,

  602. for us,

  603. I think it's still

  604. really important

  605. to read our Bibles

  606. by ourselves

  607. but this

  608. here in our text

  609. has a vision

  610. of gathering

  611. with God's people

  612. and talking about it.

  613. Meditating on it

  614. is like discussing it,

  615. wrestling with it.

  616. Literally,

  617. it talks about,

  618. it translates this word,

  619. meditate,

  620. like a murmur.

  621. Like,

  622. talk about it all the time.

  623. Like,

  624. you know,

  625. whisper it,

  626. declare it,

  627. talk about it.

  628. When you're by yourself,

  629. kind of hum it,

  630. memorize it.

  631. It's this vision

  632. of God's word

  633. being all-encompassing,

  634. knowing it

  635. as much as you can

  636. by as much strength

  637. as you can

  638. and living by its rule.

  639. And I'll just say this

  640. and I think we,

  641. I think it's worth

  642. for us to consider.

  643. Why wouldn't God

  644. just say,

  645. listen,

  646. I'm going to be with you

  647. and this is how

  648. you're going to know

  649. that I'm with you.

  650. It's not so much

  651. my word,

  652. I'm going to give you

  653. ecstatic experiences.

  654. You're going to have

  655. religious experiences

  656. where you feel

  657. the goosebumps

  658. on your arms.

  659. You feel like

  660. this electricity

  661. flowing up and down you.

  662. You just know

  663. when you're in the presence

  664. of somebody

  665. that has presence,

  666. there's something

  667. changes in the air.

  668. That's what I'm going

  669. to give you

  670. all the time.

  671. That's when you'll know

  672. when I'm around.

  673. Like a spiritual

  674. spidey sense of sorts.

  675. I want to say

  676. that it's for our benefit

  677. that God didn't do that.

  678. Although spiritual

  679. experiences are real

  680. and I think

  681. they're wonderful

  682. and I wouldn't want

  683. to discount them,

  684. God is making it

  685. very clear

  686. that if we were

  687. to rely upon

  688. our experiences

  689. alone,

  690. we would be

  691. in a terrible state.

  692. I'll give an example.

  693. Christine and I,

  694. I think we were,

  695. well,

  696. it would have been

  697. our first year of marriage

  698. because we didn't

  699. have any children.

  700. We went down

  701. to Clayton,

  702. New York,

  703. this beautiful

  704. little opera house

  705. to see Alan Doyle

  706. play a concert.

  707. Alan Doyle

  708. was the,

  709. the lead singer,

  710. is,

  711. well,

  712. was because they're

  713. broken up now

  714. of Great Big Sea.

  715. It's wonderful.

  716. Like there's like

  717. 300 people there.

  718. It was super intimate.

  719. It was really fun.

  720. We don't go to a lot

  721. of concerts.

  722. But he played

  723. this one song

  724. called Lay Me Down

  725. to Parish

  726. and it was this,

  727. I won't get into

  728. the story,

  729. it was a beautiful

  730. story and he played it

  731. and I got really

  732. choked up.

  733. Like it was like

  734. I was emotionally

  735. moved.

  736. And I can honestly

  737. say I've never

  738. had that experience

  739. with music or art

  740. since.

  741. I mean,

  742. not to that degree.

  743. I don't know

  744. what it was,

  745. if it was just

  746. because it was live

  747. or it was just

  748. such an incredible

  749. song.

  750. I don't know.

  751. But,

  752. you know,

  753. I kind of rode

  754. that wave

  755. a bit afterwards.

  756. but then it was

  757. almost like a bit

  758. of a hangover.

  759. It's like I wanted

  760. that experience

  761. but I couldn't get it.

  762. You know,

  763. here's the interesting

  764. thing about our

  765. emotions.

  766. They are wonderful,

  767. wonderful,

  768. wonderful servants

  769. but they are

  770. horrendous masters.

  771. If you are

  772. led by your

  773. experience,

  774. if you are led

  775. by your emotions,

  776. you will

  777. be blown

  778. around like the

  779. tide.

  780. You will not

  781. be a consistent

  782. reliable

  783. person.

  784. Your life

  785. will not be

  786. sustainable.

  787. Your emotions

  788. and desires

  789. will take

  790. a hold of you.

  791. If God

  792. was to give us

  793. his presence

  794. in an experience,

  795. we would

  796. treat God

  797. as though

  798. he was

  799. merely

  800. a fantastic

  801. concert

  802. or a piece

  803. of beautiful

  804. art or just

  805. an immaculate

  806. sunset

  807. and then we

  808. would find

  809. something

  810. else that

  811. would take

  812. his place.

  813. But God

  814. here,

  815. he gives us

  816. his word

  817. that is

  818. unchanging

  819. and we are

  820. to understand

  821. it as proof

  822. of his presence

  823. with us.

  824. It's a means

  825. of grace.

  826. It means that

  827. we can commit

  828. to him as he

  829. is committing

  830. to us and

  831. whether or not

  832. we feel

  833. religiously

  834. motivated,

  835. we can be

  836. sure that

  837. because he

  838. has revealed

  839. himself to

  840. us in his

  841. word that he

  842. truly is in

  843. our midst.

  844. that is

  845. why the

  846. Lord,

  847. he ties

  848. his blessing

  849. to keeping

  850. his word.

  851. What does

  852. he say

  853. here?

  854. For then

  855. you will

  856. make your

  857. way prosperous

  858. and then

  859. you will

  860. have good

  861. success.

  862. And just

  863. to be clear,

  864. this prosperity

  865. isn't just a

  866. financial one.

  867. It's the

  868. blessing and

  869. prosperity of

  870. knowing and

  871. being known

  872. by the one

  873. true God.

  874. Knowing that

  875. he will never

  876. leave you or

  877. forsake you.

  878. Is this not

  879. the ultimate

  880. source of

  881. courage and

  882. strength?

  883. This is the

  884. means to

  885. remember that

  886. the Lord is

  887. the unchanging

  888. one and that

  889. he is for you

  890. all your days.

  891. So how can we

  892. be sure that

  893. God will keep

  894. his promise to

  895. care for our

  896. welfare?

  897. How can we be

  898. sure that he

  899. will be with

  900. us?

  901. Yes, he has

  902. given us his

  903. word.

  904. Yes, he has

  905. made very clear

  906. that he will

  907. fulfill his

  908. promises, but

  909. we see it

  910. especially in

  911. the person of

  912. Christ.

  913. But first, we

  914. need to return to

  915. the land because

  916. this is significant

  917. and ties into the

  918. cross wonderfully.

  919. Why is the

  920. land itself so

  921. significant?

  922. What makes this

  923. place so

  924. wonderful?

  925. Why is it that

  926. even today and

  927. all over the

  928. world during

  929. Passover, Jewish

  930. people will say

  931. next year we'll

  932. celebrate in

  933. Jerusalem?

  934. Why is the

  935. land so

  936. significant?

  937. And I think

  938. it's for this

  939. reason.

  940. God has

  941. always, from

  942. the opening

  943. chapters of

  944. the Bible in

  945. the Garden of

  946. Eden to the

  947. temple in

  948. Jerusalem to

  949. the new

  950. Jerusalem that

  951. is promised in

  952. Revelation chapter

    Revelation 21 chapter mention

  953. 21, God is

  954. always looking for

  955. a place to dwell

  956. amongst his

  957. people.

  958. God always wants

  959. to be amongst

  960. his people because

  961. he loves us.

  962. This is why God,

  963. the Son of God,

  964. came down to

  965. us taking into

  966. himself human

  967. flesh yet

  968. remaining fully

  969. God so that

  970. in Jesus, the

  971. Messiah God,

  972. what does he do?

  973. He dwells amongst

  974. his people in the

  975. most intimate and

  976. real way by

  977. becoming one of

  978. us.

  979. Like Moses, he

  980. dies, but

  981. unlike Moses, he

  982. rises from the

  983. dead.

  984. There wasn't even

  985. time for his

  986. friends to have a

  987. funeral for him.

  988. And after he

  989. rises from the

  990. dead, the

  991. scriptures say he

  992. ascends into

  993. heaven and then

  994. he gives his

  995. people his very

  996. Holy Spirit to

  997. dwell in their

  998. hearts.

  999. God makes a

  1000. home amongst

  1001. us, but also he

  1002. makes a home

  1003. within us.

  1004. He dwells in our

  1005. hearts as

  1006. individuals, but

  1007. also as his

  1008. church.

  1009. Friends, consider

  1010. this.

  1011. God who needs

  1012. nothing from us.

  1013. He is fully

  1014. complete.

  1015. He is fully

  1016. whole.

  1017. He chooses and

  1018. delights in making

  1019. a home within you

  1020. and within me.

  1021. You see, Jesus

  1022. won't forsake us

  1023. because he himself

  1024. was forsaken.

  1025. He was utterly

  1026. alone, but for a

  1027. moment, okay, just

  1028. for a moment, so

  1029. that we would never

  1030. have a moment when

  1031. the Lord God would

1032. not be near to us.

  1033. God would

  1034. be united to

  1035. God.

  1036. If you are united

  1037. to Christ by faith,

  1038. in his gift of

  1039. divine and loving

  1040. grace, we, it

  1041. says, we are

  1042. forever in his

  1043. presence.

  1044. His promises bear

  1045. witness to this.

  1046. His word bears

  1047. witness to this.

  1048. His son bears

  1049. witness to this.

  1050. He will never

  1051. leave you or

  1052. forsake you.

  1053. friends, bolster

  1054. your strength.

  1055. Bolster your

  1056. courage.

  1057. Not in the

  1058. things you can

  1059. accumulate in this

  1060. earth, on this

  1061. earth.

  1062. Not in the

  1063. strength of your

  1064. physical body or

  1065. the incredible

  1066. ability of your

  1067. mind.

  1068. Not in a

  1069. military, not in a
