  1. Turn with me to Psalm 131, Psalm 131. I just

  2. want to read, I want to read one verse that I'm

  3. going to springboard off of and talk about something

  4. that I think is important in this hour. Psalm

  5. 131 and verse 2. Surely I have calmed and quieted

  6. my soul like a weaned child with his mother.

  7. Like a weaned child is my soul within me. Isn't

  8. that powerful? I want to read it one more time.

  9. Surely I have calmed and quieted my soul. like

  10. a weaned child with his mother, like a weaned

  11. child is my soul within me. Father, I just ask

  12. that in these few moments that we have to share

  13. and look into your word today, that you would

  14. shape us and that you would mold us and make

  15. us more like you. We thank you, Father. And everybody

  16. said, Amen. Praise God. Cammie and I, we care

  17. greatly about what is happening in your life.

  18. And so we work hard to make sure that you have

  19. the tools that you need to not only survive this

  20. crazy world that we live in. How many of you

  21. know that we live in a crazy world? Come on.

  22. Put your hand up if you think we live in a crazy

  23. world. We do. But God's plan in this world is

  24. not for you just to survive, but for you to thrive

  25. in your relationship with the Lord. abundance

  26. is God's plan for you. And by that, I'm not preaching

  27. a give -to -get kind of gospel, name -it -claim

  28. -it kind of gospel, but God's plan for you is

  29. abundance. I want to read what the apostle John

  30. said in 3 John 1 and verse 2. He said, Beloved,

  31. I pray that you may prosper in all things. and

  32. be in health just as your soul prospers. Amen?

  33. That's a lot of prospering. God wants you to

  34. thrive. He wants you to prosper in his relationship

  35. with you, in your relationship with him. Hallelujah.

  36. I had never in my life known what it was to be

  37. afraid. And 18 years ago, when I was 35, I went

  38. through a year -long battle that forever changed

  39. my life. It was a battle of health at first,

  40. and then it was a battle with fear, and then

  41. it was a battle with demons. that fear opened

  42. the door to in my life. It changed my marriage.

  43. Cammie used to sleep incredibly deep. And now

  44. if she hears something, she wakes up. And it's

  45. because of that nine months of time and what

  46. I battled through during that season. But the

  47. worst part of it all is that there was chaos

  48. that was in my soul. And I could not fulfill

  49. this verse. I could not calm and quiet my spirit.

  50. This is not something that God does for you.

  51. The psalmist here, David, wrote Psalm 131. He

  52. said, have calmed and quieted my soul. I have

  53. done it. So God helps you and heals you, and

  54. He might do some things in your life. Praise

  55. God. He's the source of it all. Amen? He's the

  56. source of it all. But it is a skill that David

  57. learned really well in his relationship with

  58. the Lord. David was gifted at calming and quieting

  59. his soul. In fact, as a shepherd boy, a teenager,

  60. he learned this. In fact, many people believe

  61. that Psalm 23 was one of the first psalms that

  62. David wrote before he ever was even anointed

  63. to be king. As he's out there in the back of

  64. the wilderness taking care of sheep, he wrote

  65. it. He said, the Lord is my shepherd, I shall

  66. not want. He leads me beside... I should know

  67. this. It rolled off my tongue when I was practicing.

  68. He makes me to lie down in green pastures. That

  69. was the part I forgot. He leads me beside still

  70. waters. He restores my soul. David learned this

  71. as a teenager. That I can still and quiet my

  72. soul beside the waters that God leads me to.

  73. Just as I'm a shepherd over these sheep, God

  74. is a shepherd over my soul if I partake of what

  75. He has given me. Amen? I have stilled and calmed

  76. my soul. And so when I was walking through, Let

  77. me continue with David for a moment. Because

  78. later on in his life, it was no different. He's

  79. a warrior, and he's leading an army. And he's

  80. not... the king yet. In fact, he's running from

  81. Saul. And in this case, he's leading an army

  82. and he's pursuing the Amalekites. And the men

  83. had lost everything and they blamed David for

  84. it. And it says in 1 Samuel 30 verse 6, now David

    1 Samuel 30:6

  85. was greatly distressed for the people spoke of

  86. stoning him because the soul of all the people

  87. was grieved, every man for his son. and his daughters.

  88. And not only did they want to stone David and

  89. blame him, but David had lost his own family.

  90. And yet the next sentence says this, but David

  91. strengthened himself in the Lord his God. Isn't

  92. that awesome? He had learned the secret of stilling

  93. and quieting his soul. And Cammie knew that I

  94. was walking through this, that that's what I

  95. needed. In fact, she wrote out Isaiah 26 .3 on

  96. a note card, and she put it on my bedside table

  97. where I read it every single day, multiple times.

  98. And so Isaiah 26 .3 says, you will keep him in

  99. perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you because

  100. he trusts in you. Now that's elusive, isn't it?

  101. In this generation, perfect peace. That's elusive.

  102. In our generation and in our time, a stilled

  103. and calmed soul in perfect peace is rare. But

  104. it's a gift that God wants to give you. and teach

  105. you that you can learn. Praise God. And through

  106. this verse, we have the first part of the remedy.

  107. I'm going to come back to the remedies in a moment,

  108. but remedy number one is keep your mind fixed

  109. on Him. Amen? Praise God. And slowly I gained

  110. victory over those months. And slowly I was able

  111. to calm and quiet my soul once again. And that

  112. was the victory. Slow down. Meditate on who God

  113. is. Hebrews 12 .2 says, Look unto Jesus, the

  114. author and finisher of our faith. There's a lot

  115. of noise in the world. There's a lot of noise

  116. in the church. People are afraid of quietness

  117. and calmness. People don't like it at night,

  118. so they put on headphones and listen to music

  119. while they're sleeping. Because stillness and

  120. calmness and quietness bothers them. You start

  121. to listen to your own thoughts. And it is something

  122. that people try to drown out. Driving down the

  123. road and the car has to be filled with sound.

  124. When I'm by myself. 80 % of the time in my car,

  125. I have no sound playing at all. I like the silence.

  126. I've trained myself that way. Silence, calmness,

  127. and quietness. Quieting your inner man is a key

  128. to hearing God's voice. Right? Quieting your

  129. thoughts. This takes self -control. Because if

  130. you just let your mind idle, it's going to run

  131. everywhere. You've got to rein that mind in so

  132. that you can hear the quietness. 1 Kings 19,

  133. what was it? That was the situation where Elijah

  134. could hear the voice of God? Was it in the storm?

  135. Was it in the wind? It was a gentle whisper.

  136. And he heard the voice of God. The sons of Korah

  137. wrote about the opposite of a quiet spirit in

  138. Psalm 42. And so I want you to know if you're

  139. spirit man, if you're inner person, is not always

  140. calm and quiet, guess what that makes you? Human.

  141. And so this is a skill to learn and master. It

  142. is not something that most people have conquered.

  143. And the sons of Korah hadn't conquered it either.

  144. And in Psalm 42, in fact, in 42 and 43, they

  145. say the same thing three times. It's like the

  146. refrain of a dreaded chorus. Why are you cast

  147. down, O my soul? And why are you disquieted within

  148. me? Hope in God, for I shall yet praise Him,

  149. for He is the help of my countenance. Why are

  150. you disquieted? You know that the first word

  151. is downcast. Why are you downcast, O my soul?

  152. Do you know that word downcast means to disintegrate

  153. to dust? To disintegrate away to dust. Why are

  154. you downcast, O my soul? And then he says, why

  155. are you disquieted within me? The word disquieted,

  156. hama, to make loud sounds. Great commotion and

  157. tumult. That's disquieted, disturbed. And he's

  158. using that about his inner man. Not what he's

  159. hearing with his natural ears, but what he's

  160. feeling in the silence. My soul just is not quite

  161. right. Everything is discombobulated on the inside.

  162. I am not experiencing the peace, the shalom of

  163. God on the inside. Anybody ever been there before?

  164. Maybe you're there right now. You're experiencing

  165. that disquieted feeling. on the inside. You can't

  166. quiet your inner man. And they wrote these two

  167. psalms, the sons of Korah, and they give us another

  168. piece of the remedy. The first one is, keep your

  169. mind stayed on Him. The second part is, put your

  170. hope in God, for I will yet praise Him. And praise

  171. becomes part of the remedy of quieting your inner

  172. man. Praise the Lord, O my soul. You know, I

  173. feel like sometimes the saying of Ruth Ward Heflin

  174. is true. That the height of your praise determines

  175. the depth of your worship. And the height of

  176. your praise goes high. Hallelujah. It does something

  177. on your inside. Praise God. It calms and quiets

  178. you. It's my prayer that everybody will leave

  179. this place calmer and quieter than when they

  180. came in. Amen? I believe that that can happen.

  181. Calmer and quieter because of praise. Put your

  182. hope in God, for I will yet praise Him. Hallelujah.

  183. There are no circumstances. You need to get this.

  184. There are no outward circumstances that can steal

  185. the quietness of your soul. The outward circumstances

  186. can rage. It does not have to determine the condition

  187. of your soul. That's something that's learned

  188. by the power of the Holy Spirit. Let me read

  189. you a verse. Now it happened on a certain day.

  190. You just listen to the story and then I'll give

  191. you the reference. Now it happened on a certain

  192. day that he got into a boat with his disciples

  193. and he said to them, let's cross over to the

  194. other side of the lake. And they launched out.

  195. But as they sailed, he fell asleep. And a windstorm

  196. came down on the lake, and they were filling

  197. with water and were in jeopardy. And they came

  198. to him and awoke him. Now, I've been, probably

  199. their boat was a little bit bigger than the boats

  200. that I have, but I've been in some rough waters.

  201. And actually, as long as it's warm weather and

  202. the water is not in danger of causing hypothermia,

  203. I actually really like the rough, rough water.

  204. As long as it's not too rough, it's a lot of

  205. fun to paddle in. But I guarantee you this, I

  206. have never slept in tumultuous water. Our Savior

  207. said, hey, hey. gentlemen, let's go to the other

  208. side of the lake. And he fell asleep in the boat,

  209. and the boat starts rocking. The boat is filling

  210. up with water. It is starting to fill up with

  211. water. One time our canoe filled up with water,

  212. and I did not tip it. It just, water came over

  213. the edge, and it and it filled the whole canoe,

  214. and the canoe was a couple of inches underwater.

  215. We were still sitting in it, and we were still

  216. paddling. But I tell you something we weren't

  217. doing. We weren't asleep in the boat. And Jesus

  218. is sleeping through the windstorm. They were

  219. beginning. to fill up with water and were in

  220. trouble. And they came to him and woke him and

  221. said, Master, Master, we are perishing. Now,

  222. there is a difference between what is happening

  223. on the inside of these disciples and what is

  224. happening on the inside of Jesus. These disciples,

  225. their hearts are not calm and quiet. Their hearts

  226. are filled with fear. Their hearts are filled

  227. with anxiety. They are fixing their eyes not

  228. on what Jesus said to them, hey, let's go to

  229. the other side, but on the wind and the waves

  230. and all the circumstances. And Jesus arose, and

  231. I think he wiped... sleepy dirt out of his eyes.

  232. And he rebuked the wind, the raging of the water.

  233. And I think he did it calmly. I don't think he

  234. had to raise his voice. And they ceased and there

  235. was a calm. And Jesus said to them, where is

  236. your faith? And here's the third key this morning

  237. is to Allow your faith to get bigger. Then they

  238. were afraid and marveled, saying to one another,

  239. Who can this be? For he commands even the winds

  240. and the water, and they obey him. The squall

  241. was upon them, but Jesus was sleeping in the

  242. boat. Because of his faith and his trust in God.

  243. Speaking to somebody here today, God is going

  244. to bring you to the other side. Trust him. Allow

  245. the calm that is in his heart. To get inside

  246. your heart. God is not nervous about your situation.

  247. God is not wondering if you're going to make

  248. it or not. He is calm and quieted and assured.

  249. Hallelujah. And you allow that to get in your

  250. heart. Isn't that a good word? Allow that that

  251. is in his heart to get inside. your heart. We

  252. need to retrain our minds. Some of us need to

  253. turn off the television because unfortunately,

  254. media, all of it, is biased. Politically, if

  255. you're watching a political channel, it is either

  256. trying to sway you to become a Democrat or sway

  257. you to become a Republican. There is not media

  258. that is not one way or the other. And you know

  259. the number one ingredient that they use to get

  260. you swayed? Fear and anxiety. And you give yourself

  261. to that, and you're going to start to get angry

  262. with them, one side or the other. But what's

  263. happening to your soul? Your soul is no longer

  264. calm and quiet. It is disquieted. And I believe

  265. that God, some of you need to turn it off so

  266. that you can quiet your heart again to the Lord.

  267. Quiet your heart. Isaiah chapter 30, verse 15.

    Isaiah 30:15

  268. I've only got two more scriptures and I'm done.

  269. This might be the shortest message I've ever

  270. preached. Some of you are clapping. Bill is clapping

  271. his hands back there. He is clapping his hands.

  272. Oh, he's ready for lunch. In Isaiah chapter 30,

    Isaiah 30 chapter mention

  273. God gives them some direction to get out of the

  274. judgment that they're in, and he says in verse

  275. 15, for thus says the Lord God, the Holy One

  276. of Israel, in returning, some translations say

  277. repentance, in repentance and rest is your salvation,

  278. or you shall be saved. In quietness, and confidence

  279. shall be your strength. But you would have none

  280. of it. It got quiet in here, didn't it? He gave

  281. them the remedy. Return. Rest in me. Embrace

  282. quietness and rest. But they rejected it. By

  283. the way that we live, we can reject the quietness

  284. of our soul, the calmness and stillness of our

  285. heart. We love our grandsons. But they shake

  286. up our house. We've had them for over three weeks.

  287. This is the longest. That's why we look so good

  288. this morning. We have been dealing with them

  289. and loving them and enjoying them. Mostly, 90

  290. % enjoying them. But they bring a sense of disquiet.

  291. to our home. And some of you can appreciate when

  292. your grandkids come, and some of you can appreciate

  293. when you send them back to mom and dad. Oh, raise

  294. your hand if you know what I'm talking about.

  295. Come on. You got to be honest. Yeah, grandparents

  296. with their grandchildren in the room right now

  297. have to be careful. Quietness and confidence

  298. is your strength. I want to read one more passage.

  299. Psalm 46. I'm going to read the whole psalm.

  300. And you're going to hear, this is again the sons

  301. of Korah. God is our refuge. And strength. A

  302. very present help in trouble. Therefore we will

  303. not fear. Even though the earth be removed. And

  304. though the mountains be carried in the midst

  305. of the sea. Though its waters roar. Guess what

  306. that word roar is? Disquieted. It's the same

  307. word. Tumultuous. Why so disturbed within me?

  308. Though the waters roar and be troubled. Though

  309. the mountains shake with its swelling. Selah.

  310. In the midst of that, the next verse happens.

  311. There is a river. Whose streams shall make glad

  312. the city of God. The holy place of the tabernacle

  313. of the Most High. God is in the midst of her.

  314. She shall not be moved. God shall help her just

  315. at the break of dawn. Here's that word again.

  316. The nations raged. It's the same word. The nations

  317. were entumbled. The nations were disquieted.

  318. The nations were all stirred up. Does that sound

  319. like our world today? That's where we live, friends.

  320. The nations raged. The kingdoms were moved. But

  321. God lifted his voice and the earth melted. The

  322. Lord of hosts is with us. The God of Jacob. Is.

  323. Our refuge. Selah. Come. Behold the works of

  324. the Lord. Who has made desolations in the earth.

  325. He makes wars cease to the end of the earth.

  326. He breaks the bow and cuts the spear in two.

  327. He burns the chariot in the fire. Be still. And

  328. know that I am God. I will be exalted among the

  329. nations. I will be exalted in the earth. The

  330. Lord of hosts is with us. The God of Jacob is

  331. our refuge. Selah. And that word still. Be still.

  332. is the word rapah. And it means to hang limp.

  333. What it really means is to give up. To give up.

  334. To give up in your own strength, in your own

  335. flesh, in your own trust. It means to fully yield.

  336. Be still. Be still. Tell on Edmund and Benji.

  337. We told them to be still. And they would not.

  338. So I put one in one chair. And one on the couch.

  339. And I said, you're there for two minutes until

  340. you are still. One of them got up. I won't tell

  341. you which one. And they got another two minutes.

  342. Give up. Yield. You know, we're not that much

  343. different. It's time to yield to the Lord. It's

  344. time to give up to God's plans for your life.

  345. It's the question that Jesus asked Saul on the

  346. road to Damascus. It's hard for you to kick against

  347. the pricks. Give up, Saul. Yield. Some perhaps

  348. have been running from God. And it's time to

  349. simply give up and yield and know that He's God.

  350. The Lord may or may not change your situation,

  351. but He will change you. He may or may not deliver

  352. you out of the lion's den. He may or may not...

  353. cause you to not be burned when you're thrown

  354. into the fire, but he will change you and transform

  355. your life. Peace is a fruit of the Spirit. Self

  356. -control is a fruit of the Spirit. It is your

  357. portion as a believer in Christ. I have stilled

  358. and calmed, quieted my soul. Father, we come

  359. before you in Jesus' name. And we thank you for

  360. your word that penetrates and cuts. And even

  361. this morning, there's a restlessness. That just

  362. can seem to never go away in our inner person.

  363. God, I'm just asking for grace this morning.

  364. You do the initial work, but we maintain it.

  365. And we have to learn to calm and quiet our mind.

  366. There's some this morning that are carrying.

  367. The chaos of Psalm 42 and 43. Why so disturbed

  368. within me? Put your hope in God. It's what you've

  369. taught us to do, Lord. To fix our eyes on you.

  370. To fix our mind on you. To give you praise. To

  371. grow in our faith. And to give up before you.

  372. Lord, if there's somebody here that's never yielded

  373. their life to Christ, I just want to give them

  374. that opportunity. I just want to pray for you

  375. right now. If you're here and you're not right

  376. with God, really, and you know that, but you

  377. want God to do a work inside of you this morning

  378. and you want to say, God, here I am. I yield

  379. my life to you. You might not even know what

  380. all that means. That Jesus paid the price for

  381. your sin on the cross. And you just yield to

  382. that. And you just turn to the Lord. And you

  383. just say, God, I turn to you. I turn away from

  384. my sin. And I turn to you right now. If you're

  385. here and... And that's your heart and you want

  386. to pray that prayer. God, I'm coming back to

  387. you. I just want you to just lift your hand.

  388. Everybody's eyes are closed and their heads are

  389. bowed. If you want to pray that prayer, just

  390. lift your hand to the Lord. Thank you. Anybody

  391. else that would just say, yes, I need to yield

  392. my life to Christ. Thank you. Anybody else? Anybody

  393. else? For the sake of these two that have raised

  394. their hands, I'd just like us all to pray together.

  395. Just repeat this prayer after me and just pray

  396. it from your heart right now. Lord Jesus, I thank

  397. you for the cross. I thank you for shedding your

  398. blood for me. I receive the gift of forgiveness

  399. as I turn from you. Turn to you. Turn from my

  400. sin. Turn to you. Thank you that you walk with

  401. me. Thank you that you help me. Every step of

  402. the way. Lord, I'm now a follower of Jesus Christ.

  403. Thank you, Lord. Thank you, Lord. Thank you,

  404. Lord. We give you praise, God. We give you praise.

  405. And now, Lord, there are people here, they need

  406. the peace of God to come and be their guard,

  407. but they need you, Lord, to just do an initial

  408. work in their heart. And as they praise, and

  409. as they focus on you, and as they grow in their

  410. faith, and as they yield, They're asking you

  411. this morning for help. And so, God, we just want

  412. to cover anybody that's in the midst of a moment

  413. like that in their life. And you can, I'm going

  414. to pray for you whether you raise your hand or

  415. not, but if you do raise your hand, I'm going

  416. to pray for you specifically. Everybody in this

  417. room has been where you are. If you'd like specific

  418. prayer, just for the Lord to help you in quieting

  419. your soul before him. I just want you to lift

  420. up your hand to the Lord. I'm going to pray for

  421. you. Thank you, Lord. People all over just lifting

  422. up their hands. Father, those that have their

  423. hands raised right now, you see right where they

  424. are. You see what they're walking through in

  425. life. Their situations and their circumstances

  426. might be tumultuous. But I ask in Jesus' name

  427. that you would come alongside them right now.

  428. And God, I just speak to the storm, not just

  429. on the outward, but on the inside. And I speak

  430. to it to be still in Jesus' name. And I thank

  431. you, God. I pray, God, that this, even today

  432. before they go to bed, that you, Lord, would

  433. come as a shepherd and they would yield to the

  434. shepherd that would say, come beside the quiet

  435. waters I have for you just for a moment to turn

  436. everything off, to put away the phone, and to

  437. just... Breathe you in. And to just say, Jesus,

  438. I thank you for the stillness and the quietness

  439. of my heart. Help me to grow in stilling and

  440. quieting my soul. In Jesus' mighty name. In Jesus'

  441. mighty name. Hallelujah. Praise the Lord. I feel

  442. the peace of God in this house. Amen? I feel

  443. the peace of God in this house. And I just speak

  444. that Hebrew word for shalom. The Hebrew word

  445. shalom is peace. And it is all around you. And

  446. it covers every area of your life. And it guards

  447. your heart. and your mind. Isn't that good? Peace

  448. of God. Hallelujah. I have stilled and quieted

  449. my soul. It's a precious commodity. And I want

  450. to encourage you to treasure and value stillness

  451. and quietness in your life. Amen? Praise God.
