  1. What a joy it is to be gathering together in worship today.

  2. It's good to be back at church with my church family.

  3. ! Catherine and I and several others from the church and a couple other churches had the opportunity to travel to Greece

  4. and retrace the footsteps of Paul on part of his second missionary journey.

  5. It was fascinating.

  6. We got to go to places like where Lydia was baptized, the first convert in Europe.

  7. We got to go to Philippi, see the jail where Paul was imprisoned at.

  8. We got to go to Corinth.

  9. We got to go to Ephesus, Patmos, all these different places.

  10. And one of the things that we kept talking about over and over again as we made our way through

  11. was the fact that Paul had an unstoppable message and a bold faith.

  12. And with an unstoppable message, the gospel, and a bold faith of taking and making sure that he proclaimed this message everywhere he went,

  13. God was able to turn the world upside down.

  14. He was able to move and work in mighty ways.

  15. And one of the things that we're talking about today and want to focus on is that we have an unstoppable message.

  16. We still have the same gospel message that we get to proclaim today.

  17. And God has called us to live this out with a bold faith.

  18. And while the unstoppable message has not changed,

  19. what we need to focus on many times is having this bold faith that shares this message to those who need to hear it.

  20. And one of the ways that we get to see this encouraged in our life is when we have fellowship with other believers.

  21. When we have this spiritual fellowship that not only gives us an example to follow,

  22. but also encourages us along the way to live out our faith,

  23. to live out this message to this life that God has called us to live.

  24. And so for the next two weeks, we're going to be looking at another component of our discipleship pathway.

  25. And the truth that we're going to be considering this week and next week is the fact that disciples show.

  26. We've already talked about the fact that all disciples know.

  27. They all know some things.

  28. They know who God is.

  29. They know who we are in light of who God is.

  30. And they know that the only way to receive salvation,

  31. the only way to be safe, to have that relationship with God restored,

  32. is through faith in Christ Jesus.

  33. So in short, all disciples know the gospel.

  34. In addition to this, we've talked about the fact that all disciples grow.

  35. They grow in this relationship.

  36. It's not something where we stay stagnant.

  37. It's not something where we come to faith in Christ and then never do anything with it.

  38. But we're growing in this relationship.

  39. And so for these first two components,

  40. I feel that we can all understand and appreciate the fact that these are characteristics of all disciples.

  41. But also, in addition to this,

  42. we're going to be moving into a couple things over the next four weeks

  43. that are sometimes a little harder to wrap our minds around the fact

  44. that they are prevalent or that should be prevalent in all disciples.

  45. And so as we begin to look at the fact that all disciples show and all disciples go,

  46. sometimes it gets a little more challenging to realize that this is for all of us.

  47. You see, with the fact that disciples know and grow,

  48. that's something that many times we think we can do by ourselves.

  49. It's a personal relationship with the Lord.

  50. It's a personal commitment to read the Bible,

  51. to pray, to give generously,

  52. to do all of these things.

  53. We feel that we can do this on our own.

  54. But all of a sudden, as we think about showing and going,

  55. then all of a sudden we realize that this is something that we're to do within community.

  56. This is something that we are to do with other people.

  57. And so sometimes it gets a little more challenging for us to wrap our minds around that.

  58. But we must understand the fact that all disciples of Jesus,

  59. not just pastors or missionaries,

  60. but all disciples of Jesus show and go.

  61. Now, I want us to consider the fact that disciples show in two regards this morning and next week.

  62. As disciples of Jesus, we're not only commanded to show others what Christ has done for us,

  63. we are to be shown by others as well.

  64. And so think of it like this.

  65. We are to see and we are to show.

  66. We are to see and we are to be seen.

  67. We are to show and we are to be shown this message.

  68. This week, our focus is going to be on seeing,

  69. on the fact that we as disciples should be looking to others' lives,

  70. having someone to invest in our life.

  71. And to help us understand the necessity of looking to godly examples,

  72. I want to invite you to open with me to the book of Philippians.

  73. Philippians chapter 3.

    Philippians 3 chapter mention

  74. We're going to start in verse 17 and work our way through chapter 4, verse 1.

  75. It's just a few verses of scripture here,

  76. but in these few verses, what we see is a necessity to look to godly examples.

  77. And so if you have a copy of God's Word,

  78. I want to invite you to follow along as I read,

  79. starting in Philippians chapter 3, verse 17.

    Philippians 3:17

  80. It says this,

  81. Brothers,

  82. Now from this passage,

  83. there are a few observations that we can make when it comes to discipleship

  84. and the fact that all disciples should be showing and be shown some things.

  85. The first observation that we made from this passage is this,

  86. Disciples see the example of godly believers.

  87. The importance of disciples seeing the example of godly believers.

  88. Brothers, this passage right here says,

  89. Brothers, join in imitating me.

  90. Where we first, when we first read this,

  91. it kind of sounds a little arrogant of what Paul is saying, right?

  92. He says,

  93. Be like me.

  94. Imitate me.

  95. I can only imagine

  96. if I go into staff meeting on Tuesday

  97. and I tell the rest of the staff,

  98. I said,

  99. All right, guys,

  100. I want you to imitate me.

  101. They'll start laughing at me like,

  102. Yeah, right.

  103. We're not doing that.

  104. But Paul here,

  105. he's saying,

  106. Imitate me.

  107. But it's not in an arrogant sense.

  108. It's not in a,

  109. Hey,

  110. to be exactly like me.

  111. It's what he's saying is,

  112. Follow my example in looking to Christ.

  113. Follow my example in keeping Christ at the center of everything.

  114. And if you look back at the chapters leading up to this in Philippians,

  115. you will see this example that Paul is saying to imitate him.

  116. The example of putting no confidence in the flesh.

  117. No confidence in our works.

  118. Paul's already told him,

  119. He says,

  120. Look,

  121. If anybody has confidence in the flesh,

  122. in their works to gain salvation,

  123. it's me.

  124. And he says,

  125. But I don't put any confidence in that.

  126. And so he's saying,

  127. Follow my example in this.

  128. Follow the example of realizing we are all a work in progress.

  129. Follow the example of forgetting what's behind and straining forward to what lies ahead.

  130. Follow his example of keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus.

  131. Follow his example in being consumed by one thing.

  132. Jesus Christ and him crucified.

  133. Paul is saying,

  134. Follow my example in these things.

  135. He realizes he's not a perfect example.

  136. In fact,

  137. that is one of the ways that we can relate to him and follow his lead.

  138. We realize that we are all works in progress.

  139. We all have much that needs to change in our lives,

  140. to be molded and informed,

  141. to look more and more like Jesus Christ.

  142. But what he's saying is,

  143. Follow this example.

  144. Follow the example.

  145. In a sense,

  146. This is discipleship.

  147. Having people in your life that you can look up to,

  148. that will mentor you,

  149. that you can follow their example,

  150. to have someone more mature in your life,

  151. that you can see how they live out their faith

  152. and be inspired to do the same.

  153. We need examples in our lives.

  154. We need people that we can look to,

  155. that we can see how they're living their life out.

  156. Many have said much of the Christian life

  157. is far easier caught than taught.

  158. In other words,

  159. much of the Christian life,

  160. we figure out and we learn

  161. by looking to other people's lives.

  162. Yes, we hear the words.

  163. Yes, we hear what we should be doing.

  164. But much of the Christian life

  165. is following the example of others

  166. who have gone before us.

  167. who are more mature in this world.

  168. We need to see those examples in our lives.

  169. Several,

  170. and this is something that we all need to understand

  171. because when we look to people's lives,

  172. when we look to those godly lives,

  173. it illustrates for us sound teaching.

  174. Several of you have mentioned

  175. that I'm running up quite the tab

  176. with my kids right now

  177. using them in sermon illustrations.

  178. For those that you don't know,

  179. every time I use one of my kids

  180. and a message,

  181. I have to pay them $5.

  182. And so let's just hypothetically speak here

  183. and just say,

  184. just imagine I had a child

  185. that is learning how to drive right now.

  186. So just, I mean,

  187. nobody in particular,

  188. but just imagine

  189. that I have a child

  190. who's learning how to drive right now.

  191. And what has been interesting

  192. is to see how he pays attention

  193. to how Catherine and I drive

  194. much more than he used to.

  195. We are,

  196. or him or her,

  197. whichever child it is.

  198. But,

  199. but,

  200. but he's paying attention

  201. to how we are driving.

  202. And so when,

  203. when we tell him things,

  204. when we say,

  205. hey,

  206. you need to make sure

  207. you stop completely right here.

  208. You need to make sure

  209. you don't go up to speed limit.

  210. You need to make sure

  211. you look both ways.

  212. You need,

  213. he's now applying

  214. those same things to us

  215. and making sure

  216. that we do those same things

  217. that we're telling him to.

  218. And it's trickling down

  219. to his other siblings.

  220. And it's not just with,

  221. with Catherine and I.

  222. I was riding with Charlotte

  223. the other day

  224. and she told me,

  225. she goes,

  226. you know,

  227. sometimes Mimi drives

  228. a little fast.

  229. And I said,

  230. oh really?

  231. She said,

  232. yes,

  233. sometimes Mimi drives

  234. a little fast,

  235. but she told me

  236. that it's okay

  237. to go five miles an hour

  238. over the speed limit.

  239. I said,

  240. oh,

  241. she did.

  242. Okay,

  243. well thank you Mimi.

  244. Thankfully,

  245. my mother-in-law

  246. is at the Methodist church

  247. and as long as

  248. all of you agree

  249. to keep that story here,

  250. it will never make

  251. its way there.

  252. But,

  253. what I've found

  254. is that so many times

  255. what we do

  256. leaves a far more

  257. lasting impact

  258. than what we say.

  259. And so,

  260. we've got to have people

  261. in our lives

  262. that we can look to

  263. at how they're living

  264. their life.

  265. We can look to their life

  266. and say,

  267. hey,

  268. they've got their eyes

  269. fixed on Jesus.

  270. They're following Jesus.

  271. They're trying to follow him

  272. with their lives.

  273. Jerry Bridges,

  274. in a book

  275. that I would highly recommend

  276. called Growing Your Faith,

  277. he says this

  278. about the importance

  279. of fellowship

  280. and having the example

  281. of others to follow.

  282. He says this,

  283. he says,

  284. none of us

  285. have the spiritual

  286. wherewithal

  287. to go it alone

  288. in our Christian lives.

  289. Spiritual fellowship

  290. is not a luxury

  291. but a necessity

  292. vital to our spiritual

  293. growth and health.

  294. Biblical fellowship

  295. involves both

  296. a sharing together

  297. of our common life

  298. in Christ

  299. and sharing

  300. with one another

  301. what God

  302. has given to us.

  303. He says,

  304. one of the most

  305. important things

  306. we can share

  307. with one another

  308. is the spiritual truth

  309. that God

  310. has been teaching us

  311. which might be

  312. of great help

  313. to fellow believers.

  314. He says,

  315. none of us

  316. are meant to do this alone.

  317. None of us

  318. are meant to go this alone

  319. and try to

  320. just pave the way

  321. ourselves

  322. but we are to have

  323. this community,

  324. have this fellowship

  325. with other believers

  326. to live this life out.

  327. we need the example

  328. of others

  329. in our lives.

  330. It's obvious

  331. when we look

  332. at our children

  333. and realize

  334. that they need

  335. these examples

  336. in their lives.

  337. They need parents

  338. that model for them

  339. what it means

  340. to follow Jesus.

  341. In fact,

  342. as parents,

  343. we are our kids

  344. primary example

  345. in this.

  346. It's wonderful

  347. to bring them

  348. to church.

  349. It's wonderful

  350. to encourage them

  351. to go to youth camp.

  352. It's wonderful

  353. to encourage them

  354. to go on a mission trip

  355. but they need something

  356. that is far more impactful

  357. than these things.

  358. They need parents

  359. that day in

  360. and day out

  361. show them

  362. what it looks like

  363. to follow Jesus.

  364. They need parents

  365. who not only

  366. make sacrifices

  367. to follow Jesus

  368. but teach them

  369. the importance

  370. of making

  371. those sacrifices.

  372. But here's the thing.

  373. It's really easy

  374. for us to see

  375. this connection

  376. with children.

  377. It's really easy

  378. for us to see

  379. this connection

  380. with being

  381. this is something

  382. that is important

  383. to teach our children.

  384. But Paul

  385. is not writing this

  386. to the children's ministry

  387. at the church

  388. of Philippi.

  389. He's not writing

  390. this letter

  391. to the youth group

  392. at the church

  393. of Philippi.

  394. He's writing this letter

  395. to the church

  396. as a whole.

  397. He's saying

  398. we all need this

  399. in our life.

  400. We all need

  401. the example

  402. of others

  403. who are looking

  404. to Jesus

  405. who are focused

  406. on Him.

  407. We need this example

  408. in our lives.

  409. We need

  410. this discipleship.

  411. We need

  412. this fellowship.

  413. We need this

  414. as a part

  415. of who we are.

  416. He's writing

  417. to the whole church.

  418. We all need

  419. examples

  420. to follow

  421. in our lives.

  422. That is why

  423. the church

  424. not this building

  425. but this group

  426. of believers

  427. is so important

  428. so vital

  429. in our Christian

  430. walk.

  431. We have people

  432. who are experiencing

  433. the challenges

  434. of life

  435. like we are

  436. and we can come

  437. alongside each other

  438. and do life

  439. with one another.

  440. We have those

  441. who've gone before us

  442. who've experienced

  443. the difficulties

  444. of this life

  445. and we can go

  446. to them

  447. and say

  448. is it worth it

  449. and they will say

  450. every single time

  451. absolutely

  452. it is.

  453. So I want to ask you

  454. do you have

  455. godly examples

  456. in your life

  457. that you can look to

  458. that you can

  459. look up to

  460. those that aren't

  461. just voices

  462. on a podcast

  463. or people that you

  464. watch on social media

  465. but people that you

  466. know

  467. that you have

  468. a relationship with

  469. that you can call

  470. that you can text

  471. that you know

  472. will be there

  473. for you.

  474. You see

  475. we can get

  476. a lot of great

  477. you can get

  478. far better teaching

  479. online than you can

  480. right here.

  481. There's a lot

  482. there's some really

  483. incredible gifted

  484. teachers out there

  485. but it's more than that

  486. we need people

  487. in our life

  488. that are going

  489. to do life

  490. with us

  491. that are going

  492. to come alongside

  493. us

  494. that's not just

  495. something that we

  496. we experience

  497. on a screen

  498. but something

  499. that we experience

  500. with other believers.

  501. You see

  502. in this

  503. in this book

  504. Paul has already

  505. spent time

  506. with this church

  507. in Philippi.

  508. He's already

  509. built relationships

  510. with them

  511. and that's why

  512. when he says

  513. things like he

  514. does in

  515. Philippians chapter

    Philippians 1:29

  516. 1 verses 29

  517. and 30

  518. it carries

  519. a great deal

  520. of weight.

  521. You see

  522. in Philippians

    Philippians 1:29

  523. 1 verse 29

  524. he's telling

  525. this church

  526. he's telling

  527. this group

  528. of believers

  529. a difficult

  530. truth.

  531. He's telling

  532. them that

  533. sometimes

  534. in this

  535. Christian walk

  536. we're going

  537. to have to

  538. suffer for

  539. Christ.

  540. There's going

  541. to be things

  542. that we go

  543. through that

  544. are difficult

  545. that are

  546. challenging

  547. and he's

  548. telling them

  549. this difficult

  550. truth

  551. but they

  552. receive it

  553. better because

  554. of his

  555. relationship.

  556. I want you

  557. to listen

  558. to this.

  559. Chapter 1

  560. 29 and 30

  561. says this

  562. for it has

  563. been granted

  564. to you

  565. that for

  566. the sake

  567. of Christ

  568. you should

  569. not only

  570. believe in

  571. him

  572. but also

  573. suffer

  574. for his

  575. sake.

  576. You should

  577. also suffer

  578. for his

  579. sake.

  580. This is a

  581. difficult

  582. truth

  583. but then

  584. he goes

  585. on to

  586. say this

  587. he says

  588. engaged

  589. in the

  590. same

  591. conflict

  592. that you

  593. saw

  594. I had

  595. and now

  596. hear

  597. that I

  598. still

  599. have.

  600. He's

  601. saying

  602. you're

  603. going

  604. to

  605. experience

  606. suffering

  607. but remember

  608. I did

  609. as well.

  610. I was

  611. there

  612. with you.

  613. You saw

  614. me experience

  615. this suffering.

  616. Yes I was

  617. there and

  618. brought the

  619. gospel message

  620. and Lydia

  621. was saved

  622. and was

  623. baptized

  624. there and

  625. then I

  626. came in

  627. and cast

  628. this demon

  629. out of

  630. this young

  631. slave girl

  632. this spirit

  633. of divination

  634. who was

  635. making her

  636. owners much

  637. money and

  638. because I

  639. did this

  640. they got

  641. really upset

  642. with me

  643. caused a riot

  644. beat me

  645. threw me

  646. in jail

  647. but while

  648. I was in

  649. jail

  650. Silas and I

  651. were praising

  652. God.

  653. We were

  654. singing

  655. and all of a

  656. sudden it

  657. gave us an

  658. opportunity to

  659. share the

  660. gospel of the

  661. Philippian jailer

  662. and him and

  663. his whole family

  664. came to faith

  665. in Christ.

  666. He says

  667. you remember

  668. me experiencing

  669. these things

  670. the suffering

  671. that I experienced

  672. while you were

  673. there but I'm

  674. here to tell

  675. you it's worth

  676. it and so

  677. because of

  678. that relationship

  679. he's able to

  680. share this

  681. truth with

  682. them and

  683. these words

  684. carry a

  685. great amount

  686. of weight.

  687. You see we

  688. need the

  689. example of

  690. strong believers

  691. in our lives.

  692. There are

  693. people that I

  694. intentionally make

  695. time for each

  696. and every month

  697. to go and

  698. have lunch with

  699. them because I

  700. need this in

  701. my life.

  702. I need people

  703. who will pour

  704. into me and

  705. who have gone

  706. before me who

  707. are further along

  708. in their relationship

  709. with the Lord

  710. who will invest

  711. in my life as

  712. well.

  713. We all need

  714. this as a part

  715. of our Christian

  716. walk.

  717. This is part of

  718. what it means

  719. that all

  720. disciples show

  721. and part of

  722. that is we

  723. have other

  724. people showing

  725. us.

  726. We get to

  727. look at their

  728. life and see

  729. that example

  730. over and over

  731. again.

  732. One of the

  733. reasons that

  734. we see this

  735. is important

  736. is because it's

  737. a tremendous

  738. blessing in our

  739. life to help

  740. you grow in

  741. your walk

  742. with Christ.

  743. You see,

  744. I've never had

  745. a conversation

  746. with someone

  747. where I was

  748. sharing with

  749. them some

  750. hard things

  751. that I was

  752. going through.

  753. I've never

  754. had a conversation

  755. with someone

  756. who was actually

  757. growing in

  758. their walk

  759. with Christ,

  760. who was

  761. actually looking

  762. to Jesus in

  763. the midst of

  764. everything going

  765. on in their

  766. life.

  767. I've never had

  768. somebody say,

  769. nah, it's

  770. really not worth

  771. it.

  772. No.

  773. Every single

  774. time, no matter

  775. what they've

  776. experienced, if

  777. they're growing

  778. in their

  779. relationship

  780. with the

  781. Lord, if

  782. they've got

  783. their eyes

  784. fixed on

  785. Jesus, every

  786. single time

  787. they'll say,

  788. yes, it's

  789. hard, but

  790. it's worth

  791. it.

  792. But it's

  793. worth it

  794. because Jesus

  795. is worth

  796. it.

  797. So we need

  798. it because

  799. of the

  800. encouragement

  801. it is, but

  802. we also need

  803. this because

  804. this is what

  805. God has

  806. called us

  807. to do, and

  808. not doing

  809. it as being

  810. disobedient.

  811. Paul says,

  812. brothers, join

  813. in imitating

  814. me and keep

  815. your eyes on

  816. those who walk

  817. according to

  818. the example

  819. you have in

  820. us.

  821. So we must

  822. keep our

  823. eyes.

  824. Disciples see

  825. the example

  826. of others, the

  827. godly example

  828. of others.

  829. But not only

  830. does Paul give

  831. us an example

  832. to follow, he

  833. gives us a

  834. warning in this

  835. passage.

  836. He gives us a

  837. warning that

  838. there are going

  839. to be those who

  840. don't give us a

  841. godly example.

  842. And so the next

  843. thing that we see

  844. is that disciples

  845. see the danger

  846. in following bad

  847. examples.

  848. Yes, disciples

  849. see the good

  850. examples, the

  851. godly examples

  852. to follow, but

  853. they also see

  854. the danger in

  855. following bad

  856. examples.

  857. It says this,

  858. for many of

  859. whom I have

  860. often told you

  861. and now tell

  862. you even with

  863. tears, walk as

  864. enemies of the

  865. cross of Christ.

  866. Their end is

  867. destruction, their

  868. God is their

  869. belly, and they

  870. glory in their

  871. shame with

  872. minds set on

  873. earthly things.

  874. You see, I

  875. don't think Paul

  876. is referring to

  877. people who were

  878. openly speaking

  879. against the

  880. church in

  881. public.

  882. I don't think

  883. he's referring

  884. to people who

  885. were in the

  886. church and

  887. now they

  888. said, I

  889. don't want

  890. anything to

  891. do with that

  892. anymore, and

  893. now they're

  894. speaking and

  895. talking bad

  896. about it.

  897. Of course, Paul

  898. would say don't

  899. follow that

  900. example, but I

  901. think what he's

  902. talking about

  903. here is people

  904. within the

  905. church who are

  906. saying one thing

  907. with their mouth,

  908. but their life is

  909. living something

  910. completely different.

  911. He's saying don't

  912. follow that

  913. example.

  914. Don't follow the

  915. example of

  916. people who say

  917. one thing, but

  918. their life is

  919. screaming something

  920. very different.

  921. It was those who

  922. claimed to be a

  923. part of the

  924. fellowship, but

  925. their lifestyle was

  926. an open

  927. contradiction to

  928. what they

  929. claimed.

  930. For these

  931. people, their

  932. end is destruction.

  933. You see, for

  934. these people, they

  935. claimed to be

  936. followers of

  937. Christ, but there

  938. was a sharp

  939. contrast in what

  940. they claimed to

  941. believe and how

  942. they actually

  943. lived.

  944. These people

  945. claimed to know

  946. Jesus, but they

  947. focus on

  948. themselves.

  949. But here's the

  950. thing, Paul's

  951. sharp warning and

  952. the way that he

  953. says this has

  954. led many people to

  955. think that Paul was

  956. probably talking

  957. about leadership

  958. within the church.

  959. People who had a

  960. voice on a regular

  961. occurrence, people

  962. who were openly

  963. sharing, but yet

  964. their life was a

  965. contradiction to

  966. what they were

  967. saying.

  968. He's telling them

  969. be very careful

  970. about those people.

  971. don't follow that

  972. example.

  973. And sadly, there is

  974. no shortage of

  975. people who claim to

  976. know Christ, who can

  977. say the right things,

  978. but their life is a

  979. complete contradiction.

  980. We see it in

  981. prominent places.

  982. We see it from

  983. politicians who

  984. claim Christ, but

  985. their life is a

  986. complete contradiction

  987. to that claim.

  988. And sadly, where we

  989. often see this is the

  990. same place that Paul

  991. is likely referring to

  992. inside the church.

  993. church and often

  994. in the office of

  995. pastor.

  996. Over the past few

  997. years, we have seen

  998. more and more pastors

  999. walk away from the

  1000. ministry, being forced

  1001. to resign or to

  1002. rethink their views

  1003. on certain issues

  1004. because they got

  1005. caught.

  1006. The reasons are

  1007. many.

  1008. Pride, abuse of

  1009. power, pornography,

  1010. adultery, you name

  1011. it, and there's a

  1012. good chance that a

  1013. pastor has been

  1014. involved with it.

  1015. And so what we're

  1016. seeing here is that

  1017. we must choose

  1018. carefully who you

  1019. are going to

  1020. follow.

  1021. Now, I'm not saying

  1022. that we only follow

  1023. perfect examples

  1024. because none of us

  1025. in here are perfect,

  1026. but we're following

  1027. examples that keep

  1028. their eyes fixed on

  1029. Jesus.

  1030. We're following

  1031. examples of those

  1032. that realize, hey,

  1033. I'm not there, but

  1034. I'm working towards

  1035. it.

  1036. We follow the

  1037. examples of those

  1038. who not only see

  1039. Jesus, but their

  1040. life shows that

  1041. they're actively

  1042. trying to follow

  1043. him, and we

  1044. follow those

  1045. examples.

  1046. Don't follow bad

  1047. examples no matter

  1048. what they say.

1049. But also I want to

  1050. encourage you, don't

  1051. give up on the

  1052. Christian faith because

  1053. of bad examples or

  1054. because of a bad

  1055. experience either.

  1056. This isn't a new

  1057. struggle.

  1058. Paul is warning the

  1059. church of Philippi of

  1060. this 2,000 years ago,

  1061. but it's something that

  1062. we must consider

  1063. today as well.

1064. And so not only are

  1065. disciples able to see

  1066. the example of strong

  1067. believers, not only are

1068. they able to see the

  1069. danger of these

  1070. examples, but finally

1071. we are able to see

  1072. that disciples follow

  1073. the good examples

  1074. they see.

  1075. Disciples follow the

  1076. good examples they

  1077. see.

  1078. Verses 20 through 4,

  1079. 1 says this, it

  1080. says, but our

  1081. citizenship is in

  1082. heaven, and from it

  1083. we await a Savior,

  1084. the Lord Jesus

  1085. Christ, who will

  1086. transform our lowly

1087. body to be like his

  1088. glorious body by the

  1089. power that enables him

1090. to be subject to all,

  1091. to, uh, enables him

  1092. even to subject all

  1093. things to himself.

  1094. Therefore, my brothers

1095. whom I love and long

1096. for, my joy and my

  1097. crown stand firm thus

1098. in the Lord my beloved.

  1099. left.

  1100. Several years ago, we

  1101. worked our way through

  1102. the entire book of

  1103. Philippians, and I'm

  1104. sure that each and

  1105. every one of you

  1106. remember every single

  1107. thing that we talked

1108. about in the book of

  1109. Philippians, and that

  1110. there's really no need

  1111. in me giving a

  1112. refresher here, and

  1113. since you remember it

1114. all word for word, but

1115. some of you may not

1116. have been here, so let's

  1117. just do a quick

  1118. refresher for something

1119. that we see at the

  1120. beginning of

  1121. Philippians.

  1122. In chapter 1, verse

1123. 27, Paul tells us, he

  1124. says this, he says,

  1125. only let your manner

1126. of life be worthy of

  1127. the gospel of Christ.

  1128. The word that Paul

  1129. uses here to describe

1130. this life, it has a

  1131. citizenship implication

  1132. to it.

1133. In fact, I love how the

  1134. ISV, it translates this,

  1135. I think probably better

  1136. than most of our

  1137. translations that we

1138. have, it says this, it

  1139. says, the only thing

  1140. that matters is that

  1141. you live as good

  1142. citizens in a manner

1143. that is worthy of the

  1144. gospel of Christ.

1145. We are called to live

  1146. in this world as

  1147. citizens of another

  1148. world.

1149. We are called to live

  1150. in this world as

  1151. citizens of another

  1152. world.

1153. We are called to live

  1154. in this world as

  1155. citizens of heaven, as

  1156. citizens of the gospel

  1157. of Jesus Christ.

1158. We are called to live

1159. in this world, but our

  1160. home is somewhere else.

1161. And in just a moment,

  1162. we're going to briefly

1163. take a look at what this

1164. means and how this gets

  1165. applied to our lives.

  1166. But before we discuss

  1167. that, given the context

1168. that this is given in,

1169. I believe Paul is setting

  1170. us up for this.

1171. He's letting us know that

1172. in order to live this

  1173. life, we need godly

  1174. examples in our life.

1175. In order to live this

1176. life where we are living

  1177. as citizens of another

  1178. place, we must have

  1179. those examples who are

1180. modeling this for us in

1181. this life, who live in

1182. this world as citizens of

  1183. another.

1184. And so how do we do

  1185. this?

1186. How do we live as

  1187. citizens of another

  1188. world?

1189. We do it in two ways.

  1190. First, we let one

  1191. citizenship take priority

  1192. over the other.

  1193. We let one citizenship

  1194. take priority over the

  1195. other.

  1196. And two, very closely

1197. related to this, is we

  1198. let one citizenship

  1199. influence the other.

1200. We let one have a

  1201. bigger priority, a

  1202. higher priority in our

1203. life, and we let that

  1204. one have influence over

  1205. the other.

1206. And so this plays out in

  1207. all kinds of ways.

1208. And I just want you to

1209. consider this with me for

  1210. just a moment.

  1211. I am thankful.

1212. And I know that many of

1213. you are thankful for the

1214. freedoms that we get to

  1215. experience in this

  1216. country.

1217. To be able to gather

  1218. together today like this,

1219. to open God's Word freely

1220. and discuss it, I am

  1221. thankful for that.

1222. We get to worship without

  1223. persecution.

  1224. I am thankful that I get

1225. to call the United States

  1226. of America my home.

1227. But my allegiance to this

1228. country, as great as it

1229. is, must always take a

  1230. back seat to my

  1231. allegiance to God.

  1232. My allegiance to this

1233. country, as great as it

1234. is, must always take a

1235. back seat to my allegiance

  1236. to God.

  1237. There is absolutely nothing

  1238. wrong with being patriotic.

1239. This is a patriotic church.

1240. I consider myself to be

  1241. patriotic.

1242. But our allegiance to our

1243. country or to a political

1244. party must always take a

1245. back seat to our allegiance

  1246. to God.

1247. We must make sure that our

  1248. citizenship in heaven takes

  1249. priority over everything

  1250. else.

1251. We must let that citizenship

  1252. influence the latter.

1253. We must set our minds on

  1254. heavenly things where our

  1255. true citizenship is, where

1256. our true hope, our true

1257. treasure is, where Christ is,

1258. who will transform this lowly

1259. body to be like his glorious

  1260. body.

1261. This is where our minds must be

  1262. fixed on.

1263. And we live in light of Christ

  1264. each and every day.

1265. This is where the examples we

1266. should be following fix their

  1267. eyes.

1268. And so when you look to people who

1269. are caring for the vulnerable,

1270. when you look to people who are

1271. caring for orphans, who are doing

1272. all that is good and right and

1273. true, who are giving to the poor,

1274. who are speaking edifying words to

1275. one another, who are outdoing one

1276. another with good works, who are

1277. showing no partiality or racism, who

1278. are putting the needs of others

1279. before their own, who are doing

1280. nothing with grumbling or disputing,

1281. who are shining as lights in the

1282. world, we should say this looks a

  1283. lot like Christ.

1284. This looks a lot like living for

  1285. another kingdom.

1286. This is what it looks like to be

1287. heavenly minded, to be focused on

1288. the things of heaven and let those

  1289. things influence this life.

1290. We should show and attempt to show

1291. the world a glimpse of our heavenly

  1292. home.

1293. So I want to encourage you to find

1294. godly examples in your life.

1295. Avoid those who claim Christ but

  1296. their life screams something

1297. completely different and set your

1298. gaze, fix your eyes on the things

1299. that are above, not on this earth.

1300. And so how do we do this?

1301. We look to the examples of others.

1302. We look to those who are focused on

1303. scripture, who are focused on the

  1304. things of heaven.

  1305. We come alongside them.

1306. We see the example that they set for

1307. us, this modeling that they have done

  1308. for us.

1309. Think of it like this.

1310. Have you ever thought about why a

1311. little Australian child has an

  1312. Australian accent?

  1313. It's because their parents, it's

1314. because what they've heard over and

  1315. over again.

1316. Charlotte, our youngest, she has a

  1317. pretty good southern drawl.

1318. You know why she has a pretty good

  1319. southern drawl?

  1320. Because of her mother.

  1321. No.

1322. We see these things all the time.

1323. We see it play out in so many

  1324. different ways.

1325. We see how modeling this example of

1326. setting an example, we see how this

1327. plays out in different people's lives.

1328. We see how children, they'll copy

  1329. other children.

1330. We see the importance of having these

1331. godly examples in our life.

1332. And so we must keep our eyes fixed on

  1333. those godly examples.

1334. We must make sure that we are

  1335. surrounding ourselves with people

1336. who will not only show us what it

1337. looks like to follow Christ, but will

1338. call us out when the time is needed.

1339. So please let us consider and think

1340. about this idea of modeling.

1341. It is vitally important in our

  1342. Christian walk.

  1343. Think about it.

1344. How did you learn how to pray?

1345. There's a good chance if you grew up

1346. in a Christian home, then your prayers

1347. sound very similar to your parents'

  1348. prayers.

1349. Because you heard those things over

  1350. and over again.

  1351. There's a good chance the examples

1352. that they set for you are the

1353. examples that you still live by today.

1354. So make sure you look to godly

  1355. examples.

1356. Make sure you're careful where you

  1357. look.

1358. Not just to any example, but to those

1359. who are focused on Christ, who look

  1360. to Him.

1361. You see, Jesus' disciples, His disciples

1362. spent three years with Him, learning

  1363. His example.

1364. And just before He goes into heaven,

1365. just before He ascends into heaven,

1366. He gives them the Great Commission.

1367. And He says, go therefore into all

  1368. nations.

1369. Go therefore and make disciples of all

1370. nations, baptizing them in the name

1371. of the Father, the Son, and the Holy

  1372. Spirit.

1373. But then He says, teaching them to

1374. observe all that I've commanded you.

1375. Jesus set this example of living a life

  1376. for others to follow.

1377. And I want to encourage you to find

1378. those people that you can look to,

1379. that will be an encouragement to you,

1380. that you can follow their example,

1381. and to encourage you to find that in

  1382. your life.

1383. This passage is a great reminder of the

1384. fact that who you hang out with, who you

1385. look to, who you let have influence in

  1386. your life, it matters.

1387. Look to and see godly examples.

1388. Those who have their eyes fixed on

1389. Jesus, those examples will not only

1390. help you to more clearly see the bad

1391. examples in this life, but those

1392. examples will show you what it means to

1393. live as citizens of another place.

1394. So help us to do that today.

1395. Lord, we thank You so very much.

1396. We thank You for Your Word.

1397. We thank You for what we understand

1398. that it means for us today.

1399. Lord, help us to apply it.

1400. Help it not to be, just be something

1401. that we know about, we get more

1402. knowledge with, but Lord, help it to be

1403. something that we apply to our lives.

1404. And Lord, I thank You.

1405. I thank You for the godly examples that

1406. You have placed in my life.

1407. Examples that have pointed me to You

1408. over and over and over again.

1409. And so Lord, I pray that we will

1410. actively be finding people to look to

1411. that will encourage us, that will

1412. mentor us, that will come alongside us,

1413. that we can look to their life and see

1414. how they're looking to You and follow

  1415. that example.

1416. And so Lord, give us wisdom, give us

1417. grace, give us understanding in all of

  1418. this.

1419. And we just thank You so much for Jesus

1420. who makes a way for us to live as

  1421. citizens of another place.

1422. So Lord, help us to keep our eyes

  1423. fixed on You.

1424. We ask all this in Jesus' precious name.

  1425. Amen.

1426. I'm going to invite you to take your

1427. Baptist hymnal and turn to hymn number

  1428. 628, He Touched Me.

1429. I want to encourage you, if God is

1430. speaking to you this morning, won't you

1431. respond as we stand together and sing?

1432. I may may may may may may may may may
