  1. Some of you are standing in front of something that

  2. has hurt you and disappointed you, and you can't make

  3. sense of it. And the question tonight is, do not

  4. interpretations belong to God? Because in this moment of your life,

  5. the way you interpret what is standing in front of you,

  6. whether it's in the form of an opportunity or opposition,

  7. will determine the momentum that you have going forward into

  8. the rest of your life. And now Joseph is in

  9. a position of power. But what happens next in his

  10. life depends on what he does in this moment. The

  11. Bible says in Genesis 45 verse 1. Then Joseph could

    Genesis 45:1

  12. not control himself before all those who stood by him.

  13. And he cried, make everyone go out from me. So

  14. no one stayed with him when Joseph made himself known

  15. to his brothers. And he wept aloud so that the

  16. Egyptians heard it. And the household of Pharaoh heard it.

  17. And Joseph said to his brothers, I am Joseph. Up

  18. until this point, they didn't know who he was because

  19. he looked so different than he did the last time

  20. they saw him. Sometimes what God will take you through

  21. in your life will make the people who used to

  22. know you unable to recognize you. But the test comes

  23. when you have to decide what you are going to

  24. do with the people who did not recognize what God

  25. had put in you. And in many cases resisted it.

  26. Now Joseph is in this moment and he identifies himself.

  27. I am Joseph. Is my father still alive? But his

  28. brothers could not answer him for they were dismayed at

  29. his presence. So Joseph said to his brothers, come near

  30. to me, please. See, it's really hard to interpret your

  31. situation from a distance. And when you keep things at

  32. a distance and deal with things at a distance and

  33. keep it out here and refuse to call it closer,

  34. I want you to think about the magnitude of this moment.

  35. When he calls the same brothers who almost destroyed his

  36. life close to him so that he can speak to them.

  37. And the question is, how will he interpret this moment?

  38. And Joseph said to his brothers, come near to me, please.

  39. And they came near and he said, I am your brother, Joseph,

  40. whom you sold into Egypt. In verse 5, verse 5

  41. is my assignment. He said, and now do not be

  42. distressed or angry with yourselves because you sold me here.

  43. You see that? For God sent me before you to

  44. preserve life. Again. And now do not be distressed or

  45. angry with yourselves Because you sold me here. For God

  46. sent me before you to preserve life. I noticed two

  47. things in that verse. And they contradict one another on

  48. the surface. Joseph said, you sold me. But then he says,

  49. God sent me. And when I was studying the text...

  50. I was asking the question, well, which one is it?

  51. You sold me or God sent me. And what God

  52. spoke to me about that is the first one is

  53. the event. But the second one is the interpretation. The

  54. first one is what you did. But the second one

  55. is what I decided about what you did. It is

  56. not the event that determines the direction of your life.

  57. It is not the event that determines the outcome of

  58. this season. It is not the event that determines the

  59. trajectory of your ministry. It is your interpretation. Do not

  60. interpretations belong to God? So I'm not downplaying what you

  61. did to me. You pushed me into that pit. It's

  62. a fact. It happened. I can't take it back. I

  63. can't change it. I didn't like it. It wasn't right.

  64. You broke my heart. You left me alone. You should

  65. have been there and you weren't there. You talked about me.

  66. You left me by myself. You said you would and

  67. you didn't. You sold me but God sent me and

  68. all at the same time. It's not two separate realities.

  69. It is one event and two interpretations. So I came

  70. to ask you a question tonight. Do not interpretations belong

  71. to God? Do you want to live in the reality

  72. of the event or the revelation?

  73. See, I used to always.

  74. Expect God to respond to my prayers with an intervention.

  75. And the more I read the story of Joseph, I

  76. realized that in many different situations, God chose not to

  77. intervene for Joseph. And God chose not to change the

  78. situation at all. Silence. Silence. This should have been a

  79. breakout session, really.

  80. I'm telling you.

  81. This is the kind of message that I never wanted

  82. to hear. Because I thought that God would always change

  83. the situation if I had enough faith to change it.

  84. And then a few situations came into my life. that

  85. no matter how much I prayed about them, or no

  86. matter how much I fought, the situation didn't change. But

  87. the more I prayed, the more I started to change.

  88. I need an interpretation. I need an interpretation of what

  89. I'm going through in my life right now. I need

  90. God to show me why my children are acting crazy.

  91. I need God to show me.

  92. If you don't learn to interpret situations, that's the greatest

  93. gift that the Spirit of God gives is the ability

  94. to interpret a situation according to your faith, not your feelings.

  95. And I am learning this more and more that my

  96. interpretation is so off sometimes because I interpret other people's.

  97. Reactions through my own insecurities. And so I keep trying

  98. to judge people's responses to me. But if I'm interpreting

  99. it through my own insecurities, I look like grasshoppers in

  100. my own eyes, not in theirs. That's an interpretation. The

  101. first time I preached internationally through an interpreter, I was

  102. so nervous that I called one of the men in

  103. our church who had Preached internationally more than I had.

  104. And I said, you got any tips for me? He

  105. was like, yeah. Pray for a good interpreter. And I said, well,

  106. what makes a good interpreter? And he said a few things.

  107. But I said, how will I know if I've got

  108. a bad one? He said, well, when you finish talking,

  109. if he talks a lot longer than you just talked,

  110. you've got a bad interpreter. If you say one sentence

  111. and he says three, then he's adding something to what

  112. you just said. You've got a bad interpreter. And I

  113. came all the way from Charlotte, North Carolina to tell

  114. a few, you've got a bad interpreter. Because you keep

  115. adding stuff. You keep hearing things that aren't there and

  116. seeing things that aren't there and thinking things that aren't true.

  117. Some of you need to fire your interpreter because you

  118. are interpreting your present through the lens of your past.

  119. And so you're dragging all of that pain and all

  120. of that resentment and all of that regret. And you

  121. are in the prison of your own perspective. And so

  122. what God has given you really is good. And it

  123. really is a reason to celebrate. And you really could

  124. be content. But your interpreter is telling you stuff. based

  125. on what other people have. You know, it's a terrible

  126. way to interpret your life through somebody else's Instagram post

  127. because that is not their real life. That is not

  128. their real family. Their kids only acted like that for

  129. three seconds for them to take the picture and then

  130. they started biting each other. It is not real. It

  131. is an illusion. And Paul said, pray for the power

  132. to interpret. Now, I don't just want the power to

  133. interpret tongues. I want the power to interpret my trials

  134. and my tests. And my trauma. Because if I don't

  135. interpret it correctly. If God doesn't give me the power

  136. to interpret it. I'll fight all the wrong battles on

  137. all the wrong levels. And I'll send my brothers away.

  138. Because they hurt me when they were the very opportunity

  139. that God gave me. Hey, thanks for watching.
