Luke 15:11-20 - Tim Roberts - August 26th, 2026

But so you all have me tonight.

And I hope that uh what I share with you tonight will be meaningful, and hopefully you can apply it to your life and s you know somehow.

Uh because we're going to be talking about the prodigal son tonight.

And there's some things that uh I see in his life that uh you know he he we was the prodigal son, and we we all know the story of what what ended uh with his life when he went off into the far country.

But uh there were some things that happened and he got his life, he got his life uh turned around and and he went back home, okay?

So let me pray and we'll we'll get started a little bit, okay?

Father, we thank you for the opportunity you give us tonight.

Father, I thank you for the opportunity to speak again.

And and Father, uh I know I'm not worthy.

I've I've I've be right be honest with you right now.

I pray that you would speak through me tonight, that Father, I would step aside and allow your Holy Spirit to reveal things to these folks that are here tonight, and I pray that everything that will be said and done will be to your glory.

In Christ's name we pray.

Amen.

So we're in chapter 15, verses 11 through 20.

And I'm gonna read that, okay?

So Jesus continued, there was a man who had two sons.

The younger one said to his father, Father, give me my share of the estate.

So he divided his property between them.

Not long after that, the younger son got together all he had, set off for a distant country, and there squandered his wealth in while living.

And he had spent everything.

There was a severe, after he had spent everything, there was a severe famine in the whole country, and he began to be in need.

So he went and hired out himself out to a citizen of that country, who sent him to his fields to feed pigs.

He longed to fill his stomach with the pods that the pigs were eating, but no one gave him anything.

When he came to his senses, he said, How many of my father's hired men have food to spare, and here I am starving to death?

I will set out and go back to my father and say to him, Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you.

I am no longer worthy to be called your son.

Make me like one of your hired men.

So he got up and went to his father.

But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him.

He ran to his son, threw his arms around him, and kissed him.

Man, what a what a you know, I I I told somebody several weeks ago, I always claimed to be the prodigal son, because I'd walked an aisle at 12 years old, and man, I did it for all the wrong reasons, to be honest with you.

I uh I was at 12 years old, I was real competitive.

I didn't, and I still am that way.

If we're gonna play a game and keep score, man, I ain't I ain't wanting to lose.

Any of y'all, okay?

But I want to win.

If we're gonna keep score.

But I did it for all the wrong reasons, because see, I saw another young boy go down the week before.

And man, all them older ladies got around him and they patted him on the head, and man, they they made a big ado about him getting him getting saved and baptized, you know, in the future, future weeks.

So then that next next week, man, I went and saw the preacher and I did everything.

I understood what he was talking about.

He shared the Romans road with me.

And um man, that next Sunday I walked that aisle and I prayed that prayer.

And uh, and I went down, and man, all them older ladies hugged on me and patted me on the head.

And man, I thought, man, I'd I'd done something.

And then I moved to Live Oak, Florida, and then I go off to college and and I live for Tim Roberts uh as much as I could.

And then David Burton shows up here back in 2002, and he preaches a sermon on heart and head knowledge.

And man, that second, that first night, man, I man, I start down the aisle and and brother Jim grabs me and says, What are you doing?

I said, I think I need to get saved.

And he said, Oh man, you've just done the prodigal son thing.

And I went back like an idiot and sat back down in that pew.

I didn't sleep much that night.

Because, see, I got to thinking, man, if I don't wake up in the morning, if I'm gonna go to heaven or hell.

Well, I was back in that pew the next night, that Tuesday night.

And Burton preached the same sermon just about on heart knowledge and head knowledge.

And man, he ain't got the altar call out of his mouth.

I'm already down, and my pastor's still trying to grab me.

And I understood what he was saying.

I was already a deacon at that time, but man, I was lost, folks.

I was lost.

And I told Brother Jim that night, I said, Look, I don't need you for what I'm fixing to do.

I'm going straight to the Father, and I'm getting, I'm planting a flag or stake tonight, and there ain't gonna be no more doubt about whether Tim Roberts is saved.

Okay?

Man, I got saved that night.

And I ain't never questioned my salvation ever again.

Because if somebody asks me, are you going to heaven?

You dang right I am.

Not based on anything this old boy's done.

Because, see, I'm gonna have, when I, when I go before the the holy God that we serve, and he looks at me and he says, Hey, Tim Roberts, what do you think, why do you think you can come into my kingdom?

You know who I'm gonna have over here as my as the best defense attorney in the universe?

I'm gonna have Jesus Christ right there.

And Jesus Christ is gonna say, hey, this man knows me, and he's trusted me with his life.

Man, that's what, that's that's about, I ain't no prodigal son.

I was lost, folks, okay.

All right, I've, you know, you know the prodigal son.

You know everything.

There, there is a there is a a difference in in some of the, I don't know what your your set yours says, but it said that it said that he in my uh version it says he was in the distant country.

There is some uh uh that say the far country.

Let me ask you something.

Where do you where do you think the far country is this?

What do you think the far country is?

Back home, the far country?

What?

Anywhere away from the Lord.

Any way away from the Lord, absolutely.

The far country is this.

The far country is anywhere outside the will of God.

Okay?

Anywhere outside the will of God.

But what's the problem with us human beings?

We like to choose our own plan, right?

We do.

We sure do.

See, he has a I tell my fourth, or I did tell my fourth and fifth graders for the last four or five years, I said, God's got a perfect plan for you, and he does for all of us.

Ain't that amazing?

He has the perfect plan for us.

And what do we do with it?

We mess it up.

We mess it up.

See, I could I could always look good on a Sunday morning.

When I started back to church before I got saved, man, I could I could dress up and look the prettiest anybody in the in the church.

Say the right things, but man, I was lost.

I could look good on the outside.

But see, there was there was a rottenness in inside.

See, when the prodigal son hits rock bottom, his life began to change.

And it will in yours.

If you've ever hit rock bottom, whatever, what happened?

You either got one way to go, right?

Now you can go sideways if you hit rock bottom.

You just you just uh love being in the muck, I reckon.

I hear a lot of people say, man, when when I was flat on my back, you know what it showed me that I need to start trusting in him.

Got to get back to the Father.

But there's five words that come to mind when we find out what happens to the to the prodigal son.

First, the first word is he has an awakening.

He has an awakening.

Verse 15, 17 says, when he came to his senses.

Man, that's a that's an outstanding phrase right there.

When he came to his senses, in my in a in the NIV it says, when he came to his senses.

Man, I like that.

Folks usually get fed up and tired of wallering in the mud, right?

I don't know too many people that that love to stay in the in the mud pit.

See, sin is a form of temporary spiritual insanity.

To turn away from God's is insanity because we are turning away from that which is good to that which is bad, right?

That which is worth everything to that which is worth nothing.

And then that which has eternal value to that which has no value.

We're turning away from the one who provides living water.

Now that's that's insanity, right?

When we want to turn away from the one that provides the living water for us.

What do you think?

What do you think of all the things?

What do you think the prodigal son got to thinking about?

Why do you think he got to thinking about going back home?

What do you think?

Tells you in the scripture there.

He got hungry.

He got hungry.

You're right.

I got a little story.

When I was about probably six, seven years old.

Yes, sir.

I had me a little wooden wagon.

And one day I got mad that I've gotten a little wooden wagon, and I'm walking down the road.

I'm running away from the hole.

But I didn't get very far when I realized that I was going to be hungry.

So you got to go back home.

And it was a little tough decision for a little woman to make it with a word bad.

I bet, I bet.

So what brought the prodigal tongue prodigal to his senses?

He was hungry, like uh Sid said.

His stomach made him come back to his father.

That's not a very exalted motive, right?

Yeah, would y'all agree?

Nothing suggests that he turned back because he realized what a terrible thing he had done, right?

That man got hungry.

Man, he got to he got to thinking about them old pods that he was, and that they ain't much to a pod.

If you've ever seen a pod, I think that's the that's the end, that's outside of maybe uh, you know, say if you got if you're shelling some peas or something, that's that's what you throw away.

That's what he was feeding, feeding the pigs.

So, so why would a why would a father take back a son whose only motive for coming home is because he's hungry?

He loved him.

That's right.

Because, see, that's what it means to be a father.

You know, I told my daughter, I said, you know, and I had to I had to go back and change that.

But I told her when she was real little, I told her, I said, you're, I'm the only one you're gonna ever be able to trust.

And man, I was wrong in that.

Because see, I failed her.

I failed her not being the spiritual father that I should have been when she was early on.

Man, thank God for a father-in-law that had my daughter in church house on a Sunday morning and a Sunday night and a Wednesday night.

Because you know where I was at on those, the Wednesday afternoon, I was at the golf course.

And Sunday I was back at the golf course drinking beer and having a great time, man.

Just having a ball.

And I wasn't fulfilling what I should have been fulfilling as the spiritual leader of my family.

Man, I I failed her miserably.

But see, that's what, you know, our daughters and our sons are gonna disappoint us.

That's that's only a that's a guarantee sometimes.

But man, we gotta love them like Jesus loves us.

Or like the Father in heaven.

See, if you're hungry, I know where you can be fed.

If you're tired of eating with the pigs, I know where you can join a banquet that never ends.

It never ends.

And if you're thirsty and tired of the sewer water of sin, I know where you can get a drink of fresh, clear, flowing, living water.

But it takes you seeking Jesus out.

Okay, we gotta seek, we gotta seek Jesus.

Because see, Jesus will change your life, and that's what scares some people.

Man, I I if I get if if man, if I succumb to Jesus, man, the party's over.

Man, Jesus gives us hope.

He gives us faith.

You ever pray for faith?

I've started praying for faith.

Because some days on the chicken farm, man, I I'm thinking, I'm trying to do everything in my own strength.

And I ain't asking, I ain't asking him for nothing because I think I can do it.

And you know what I've been praying for?

Because I got a bunch of chickens piling up, and you may say that's crazy, but I'm praying that those chickens, God will calm them chickens down to where they won't be so crazy.

And on feed days, they just want to pile up and smother each other.

That's what I'm praying for.

I've been praying for that for two and a half weeks.

And you say, well, that's silly.

Well, no, it ain't.

Because see, if I if I'm involved in the chicken business, I want I want my my God and my savior involved in it too.

Man, Jesus changes lives.

The second word we find in the prodigal is repentance.

Prodigal says, I will go back to my father.

You know what repentance is, right?

Everybody knows repentance?

You gotta repent and believe, right?

To know Jesus, right?

Simple.

Repent and believe.

Repent and believe.

It's having a change of mind.

Prodigal Son says to his father, Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you.

See, repentance is a change of mind that leads to a change of life.

And it'll get you back home.

I guarantee you it will.

Man, there's a song that Brandon Lake sings.

It's called King of Hearts.

And I wrote down here, repentance usually comes with some type of emotion.

And what I mean by that is when I listen to this King of Hearts that Brandon Lake sings, it's about Jesus being up on the cross in between those two thieves.

And he and Jesus turns and looks at that thief that that obviously repented because he was cursing him earlier, you know.

But Jesus tells him, Man, don't worry, son, you're gonna be in paradise with me.

And it it it man, it I I cry every time I listen to it.

Because, see, it talks about he give us grace for my shame.

And I brought him shame a long time.

And man, it just, you know, emotion, emotion usually comes with repentance.

The third the third word we find in the prodigal's life is honesty.

Why would you think he would we would find that in his life?

Honesty.

Because he says this.

He said, I will set out and go back to my father.

He admits who he has sinned against.

You will know that you're really serious about changing your life when you stop making excuses for your behavior.

Right?

You know, I tell folks all the time that we have a choice to make every time our feet hit the our feet hit the floor, right?

You're either gonna make some right choices or you're gonna make some wrong choices.

My wife had a nephew, and he's grown out of this, but she would come in and she would say, poor Ryan, poor Ryan, poor Ryan.

And I said, It's all it's of his own doing.

He's making bad choices.

And she never could understand that.

She eventually did.

But we all have a choice to make, right?

Man, I love I love the part about where Burton talks about, you know, uh, you know, if you're in the enemy's camp, if you're not a child of God, or or if he's got you shackled up, you know, when you hit the floor, he looks over at you and he says, Well, there ain't gonna be no problem out of him today.

Or you are you the type Christian that when your feet hit the floor, man, that he's hollering.

He's hollering.

Say, man, you better watch out for that Gene Thomason guy over there.

Because he's going to be troubled today.

I tell people, Satan is he's out here in the driveway doing push-ups right now, waiting on us to get out of here.

So he can have his way with us.

That's why you better have a prayer life.

You better have, you better be in that word on a daily basis, and you better hang out with some good Christian friends, or the devil's gonna eat your lunch.

He will.

But man, he found some honesty in his life.

Think about what the prodigal son could have said.

He said, it was really my older brother's fault.

He always picked on me.

I had a younger brother.

I mean, he picked on me more.

I just knocked him foolish a couple times.

I got that sobbed.

But the older brother, he's always picking on the younger brother, right?

He could have said that.

Or he said he could have said this.

Man, you know, Dad always liked my older brother better.

He liked him best.

Or if Daddy had given me more money, I wouldn't be in this fix, right?

Because what'd he do with all his money?

Spend it on wild living.

And then he could have said this, man, those seductive ladies, man, they they seduced me and they stole my money.

He could have made that excuse, right?

Or he could have said this, man, that farmer never gave me a good job in the first place.

Had me feeding pigs.

And for a Jewish boy feeding pigs, that's man, that's that ain't kosher.

Man, the prodigal could have found a thousand excuses, right?

Because we make excuses, right?

And you know, I I can make a mistake and and I can blame it on somebody else.

But when you when you when you own up to your own mistakes and take responsibility for them.

See, that's what that's what the prodigal son did.

He said, Man, I have sinned.

I have sinned against heaven, and I've sinned against you, Father.

Golly?

Man, he got honest, didn't he?

He admitted who he had sinned against.

He didn't make excuses.

Three little words, simple, so short, yet so profound.

See, they mark the beginning of a new life for this young man.

Because when you stop making excuses for your failures, you're not far from a brand new life in Christ.

Then the fourth word is humility.

We see some humility in this young man.

Can't you just hear the old prodigal in the pig pen feeding the pigs, and he's like rehearsing what he's gonna say to his dad?

I mean, I can I can hear him now.

And when he does get to his father, he says, I am no longer worthy to be called your son.

Make me like one of your hired men.

Man, that's a tremendous statement, okay?

Tremendous statement.

See, he didn't make any, he didn't make any deals with his father, did he?

He came home with no preconditions.

He didn't say, Dad, before I before I come, we gotta make a deal.

Right?

He didn't say, you got to give me back my fortune I've lost.

How about replacing it?

And I'll come home.

See, this young man finally got to the point where he was deeply hurt and ashamed of how he's living.

But here's what he did say.

He did say, Father, I'm not worthy to be called your son.

I brought you shame and disgrace the family name.

If you will take me back, I will work like one of your hired hands.

I won't even call myself your son anymore.

Wow.

Man, that's a heck of a statement.

See, folks, whether you know it or not, it's God's way.

And it always will be.

And don't ever make deals with God.

I've I've made some deals, and man, it's come back to bite me in the in the rear end.

Because I made a deal with God.

I said, God, if you'll do this, I'll man, I'll live better for you.

And then the last word.

Say, man, I'm 30 minutes in, and we we good to go, ain't we?

The last word we find in this prodigal is some resolution.

Some resolution.

Scripture says, so he got up and went to the Father.

See, after the awakening, where he came to his senses, after he found some repentance in his life, where he found some honesty, and where he found some humility, it all leads to a resolution to go home.

Now that's a step in the right direction for that young man.

Wouldn't you agree?

See, I tell believers, and I and I say this often to some of the people I speak to because they're struggling with some issues.

And I always tell them, I said, man, if you find yourself lost, if you find yourself lost and living in the far country, man, get back to the cross.

If you can just get back to the cross, man, and recognize what he did for us on that cross, man, it'll change your life.

Change your life.

See, it'd be real easy to be critical of the the prodigal, right?

But I tell you at least one good thing about this young man.

When the time came for him to move, folks, he moved.

He moved.

There's something about that moving, okay?

There's something about moving when that whole Holy Spirit stirs in you.

Man, we all we, you know, a couple Sundays ago, I went down to the altar.

It wasn't anything.

Kyle preached a heck of a sermon.

Kyle preaches his, he's he he preaches an amazing, amazing sermons.

I've just been so impressed with what I hear.

And that morning, when I got in service, I've already, I was already filled with the Holy Spirit because I felt the presence of him in our worship service.

And then when Kyle got to preaching, man, it just moved.

I had to move.

You know what I mean?

Man, our altars ought to be full every Sunday with what he preaches.

Man, we so scared to get up and we so scared to go down front because we may, old Joe may think, man, what's going on with him?

He's having marital problems or whatever.

Man, our altars ought to be full because I know what kind of week I've lived.

Man, not all of it glorifies the Lord.

I'm sad to say that.

Because see, I'm human.

Man, I make mistakes.

But I tell you what I do, dude.

I do pray, and man, I got so many people I'm praying for right now.

It takes me for almost 40 minutes to pray for everybody.

And the list keeps getting longer because people keep getting sick.

But that's part of our fallen nature, right?

And I'm in that word every day.

And man, I try to hang out with the most Christian friends I can too.

Because, see, I know I know without a doubt, especially those guys I went to Brazil with all those years.

I've been to 10 trips to Brazil.

And those guys I went with would call me out in a heartbeat, and I would expect them to.

And I would do the same for them.

So, man, surround yourself with some guys that you can trust and know that they'll get on your rear end.

But see, if if God's moving in your life, I tell people, man, get out of the bleachers.

Get out of the bleachers, folks.

God's got a He's got the perfect plan for all of us.

And He's got something special for you and for me.

I told Sid earlier, or I told uh Roy that he uh that I was I was spending a lot of time pray uh preaching at other churches.

And I'm not a real good preacher, but I love Jesus, and man, that's what I chair, I share with him.

And uh but there was a bunch of empty pastorates you know around the county.

And man, they've they've I started praying that man they'd find a pastor and pray to find a pastor, and my gosh, they got their pulpits are full now.

They got they all got pastors, so that that's kind of kept me from being able to go anywhere and preach because nobody's calling.

But that's a good thing, right?

But man, I love getting up and telling people about who Jesus is and what he's done in my life.

See, so many will say, Tomorrow I will I'll rise and go to the Father.

Next day or next week or next month.

Give me some time to think about it.

But not this prodigal.

So he said, I am going to go, and he got up and he went right then.

So how hard is it to come back to the how hard is it to come back from the far country?

If you're living in the far country right now, how how difficult is it gonna be to get back to where you need to be?

It's really not that hard, okay?

The hardest is the first step.

And a journey of a thousand miles starts with the first step.

See if you like this this prodigal, we turn back to the father, and he will, and that father, you know what he'll do for you?

That heavenly father, man, he'll run to you.

Because that's the that's the illustration in this prodigal of this this prodigal son.

You see where it says, but while he was still a long way off, his father saw him, was filled with compassion for him.

He ran to his son, threw arms around him, and kissed him.

See, man, the father's just waiting for you to turn around.

Because, see, the father, sometimes I've I've I've heard people say, Man, I just don't feel the presence of God in my life.

And I'm thinking, man, God don't never leave us.

We the ones that turn our backs on him.

See, that's a that's a man, what what a show of grace.

In the prodigal son, and when we do get out of the far country, come back home to the Father.

Like I tell you, you gotta you gotta find your way back to the cross.

If you're a child of God.

I tell folks, I said, if you're not a child of God, then you better find a way to get to him.

Because I'm afraid eventually that Holy Spirit tugging on his on your heart will stop and then you're in real trouble, right?

So, like I said, in the prodigal son's life, he had an awakening, he came to a senses, he found repentance, he found some honesty that he needed, didn't make excuses, blamed himself for what happened.

He found some humility and he also found some resolve to go back home where he knew he needed to be.

You know, you're talking about awakening.

Anybody ever had an awakening?

That's a big word.

I I say, you ever come to your senses?

Anybody ever come to your senses?

Well, I had a I had a come to Jesus awakening in 1998.

And I was out in Panama City on a Gold Kiss trip, and man, we were it was right up my alley.

It was cold beer and it was playing golf for three days.

Man, right up my alley.

And I was ready to go.

And I went.

Second night I stayed at a place I shouldn't have been at.

Got left, and it was about a nine-mile run to where I was staying out there at Bay Point.

Oh, and I got halfway, I got halfway on that sidewalk, and I'm thinking, goodness gracious, Tim, what in the world have you done with your life, you know?

Y Mom and Dad, if something happened to you, mom and dad would be real ashamed of you.

Your wife and daughter's home where they're supposed to be in the bed, and I'm out here stuck between almost, I'd run about five miles.

I had like four more to go.

And I didn't know how I was gonna get, because that that bus was leaving at five o'clock that morning.

And this was late, okay?

It was late.

And as I was bent down on the sidewalk, just sweating pouring off of me, I'd done sobered up by then.

Man, God just reached down.

And he picked me up by the back of my shirt and he shook me for a little bit, but then he allowed me to step out in the street.

I mean, that's what happened.

He allowed me to just step out in that street and look at old Tim Roberts.

And I don't know if that was in the spirit or what, I don't know.

But he allowed me to look at the sweat that was pouring off of me, and man, I could see the sin in my life.

I thought, man, sin was just sweating, was just pouring, dropping off of me.

And man, within a split second, I was back in my body, and he told me just quietly that that night, he says, You're done living for you, Tim Roberts.

You're gonna start living for me, and you're gonna learn what it means to live for me.

Because see, I was I wasn't in church, I wasn't, but you know what I did?

I I started coming to church here, and I started going up to that balcony.

Because see, I I wasn't, I didn't feel like I was I could be in around some of these church people.

Because see, man, I saw something different in them.

Saw something different in them.

Especially like Jeff Jones and Jeff Scott and David Wood and some of those guys that that when I first started coming, they were here.

And man, I just, you know, it's like, wow.

And then Jeff, Jeff Jones, uh uh Steve Jones, Steve Jones asked me to uh, he asked me to a uh brother's keeper meeting over at Jeff Scott's.

And I was like, man, I can't go to that.

Man, I ain't I ain't worthy for that.

And I walked in there that first day and I felt like a wolf in the in the lamb's den.

That's what I felt like, because I said, man, I ain't I ain't supposed to be in here.

But you know what happened after that first meeting?

Man, I realized those guys struggled with sin just like I did.

But see the difference, they were a child of God, and I wasn't.

And praise the Lord that God waited until 2002 to allow me to hear a message by David Burton about a heart knowledge and a head knowledge.

And see, I'd made a decision with my head back when I was 12 years old.

But I got it right that night, that second night.

I got it right.

Like I tell people, man, I I'm saved.

I'm gonna go to heaven one day, but it ain't based on anything good this old boy's ever done.

It's because what Jesus Christ did on that cross for me 2,000 years ago.

And man, I'm so grateful for that.

Because those people that think you can work your way in or you can do this, or you can pay your way in, man, they they lost.

They lost.

And we need all of you telling them who Jesus is when you get that opportunity.

Man, the greatest, the greatest feeling that I've ever had was seeing someone come to Christ.

Man, it was, it was, I hit a grand slam my last, my last game in college, and I knew when I was circling bases, that was this, I ain't gonna never match nothing that felt like that.

But the first time I shared and I saw that person receive Jesus Christ into their heart, man, it was thousands of times greater than that old home run that I hit.

And I went home, I told my wife and daughter about it, and they looked like I'd grown, they thought I'd grow three heads.

I was so excited, I couldn't even go to sleep that night.

But see, I do understand that I don't save anybody.

I'm just the messenger boy.

I just plant the seed.

But see, I always wondered, what what is that, what is that power that, man, I experienced it that night.

And you know what it was?

See, I was in the presence of God's Holy Spirit.

And that's that's as powerful as it gets right there.

And man, it turned it turned me on.

When I saw that first one, man, I man, it just got me, I figured out that God's given me a gift of evangelism.

Man, I couldn't, I couldn't tell enough people about Jesus.

They didn't want to hear it in the gym.

They got to the point where they just avoided me.

But that's all right.

I ain't never had but one door slammed in my my whole life in this town.

Most people's gonna talk to you.

The best place to go is the laundromat.

Man, people's doing clothes.

They ain't got nothing to do.

They'll listen to you, especially if you you want to pay for their wash or you know, pay for their dryer.

I always take a bunch of coins with me.

Man, they'll listen to you.

Man, I love it.

I love telling people about who Jesus is and what he's done in my life.

And I pray that you do.

Let me pray.

Father, we thank you for the prodigal son and the father, just the example.

We saw him spend everything that his father had given him.

Spend it on while while living.

And yet, Father, he he come to his senses, man.

Praise the Lord for that.

He decided, man, I can go back home and you father, you don't even have to call me son.

But I'll go and work it as a hired hand.
