  1. I must confess as I look at this passage, I am what you might call a brown thumb.

  2. ! I am actually unable by any means to make anything grow.

  3. ! In fact, someone recently had gone back to Canada and was like,

  4. Ash, I'm going to give you this plant of mine, but no, it is dead.

  5. They can be hurt.

  6. It's sad, it's depressing because it's a reminder of the friendship, which is not dead,

  7. but it could be herbs, it could be fruit, it could be even a succulent.

  8. I can't bring it to grow.

  9. And the reality is when you buy any plant, whatever it is, the goal for it is fruitfulness, isn't it?

  10. The goal for it is to grow.

  11. And who doesn't want it to grow?

  12. Me, apparently.

  13. And you see, the picture that's been read out for us is that being in Christ

  14. is like the relationship between a vine and branches.

  15. And in this series that has been called In Christ, we've looked at the nature of being united with Jesus.

  16. How it is so unchangeable, this unbreakable bond, all because of the work of Christ.

  17. And this time we're looking at this beautiful metaphor of, again, what that union should look like.

  18. Have a look at verse 5.

  19. I am the vine, you are the branches.

  20. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit.

  21. Apart from me, you can do nothing.

  22. Jesus, the same God who was there at the beginning, affirms that you are united to him as a vine is with a branch.

  23. And isn't a vine just such a beautiful image?

  24. Because what should be etched into our minds are vines that are just overflowing

  25. and it just keeps growing and growing and growing and growing on the wall or even on a wooden stake.

  26. It's got this growth, it's got this vitality that is just all-encompassing.

  27. That's the relationship that you have with Christ.

  28. The power of being connected to Jesus, the vine, means fruitfulness.

  29. It means that fruitfulness will happen.

  30. A vine that keeps growing and growing and growing.

  31. That if you keep the branches healthy by being connected, they will bear fruit.

  32. And so too, therefore, is his desire for you.

  33. Verse 2.

  34. He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit,

  35. he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful.

  36. And in verse 16, you did not choose me, but I chose you.

  37. And appointed you that you should go and bear fruit.

  38. Friends, bearing fruit is the obvious reality for the Christian here in John 15.

  39. And what's beautiful that's added here is that God has chosen you.

  40. He's chosen you.

  41. He's predestined you to be faithful.

  42. To be fruitful.

  43. That his purpose and the reason for your fruitfulness is because he chose you and made you for it.

  44. Because fruitfulness is the mark of a Christian or a sign, if you will.

  45. Earlier, Nick preached on being made dead and alive in Christ.

  46. And in very much the same way that Paul says that you are now dead and you have been made alive in Christ,

  47. you are to stop sinning, living as though you are dead.

  48. And Jesus here says, because you are a branch, you who trust in Jesus are a branch that is rooted and connected to the source of life and growth,

  49. bear fruit.

  50. Jesus says that you have God's spirit that lives in you, which he assures those who trust him that you will be fruitful.

  51. And so fruit is a non-negotiable.

  52. It's promised.

  53. You can't say, I'm just a branch attached to the true vine and I'll choose to bear my fruit rather than Jesus' fruit.

  54. And let me make it really clear.

  55. What makes you a Christian is not your fruit.

  56. What makes you a Christian is the fact, verse 3, that you were made clean, heard the word of Jesus being the way, the truth and the life,

  57. being forgiven and given new life by your confidence being in Jesus Christ.

  58. And then what flows from this is fruitfulness.

  59. Because you know what God commanded humanity as he established them on this earth?

  60. He says to you and I, Genesis chapter 1, verse 28, God blessed them and said to them,

    Genesis 1:28

  61. be fruitful and multiply.

  62. Be fruitful.

  63. It's our original call, our original command.

  64. And so we have to ask ourselves, what is the fruitfulness that we have been designed for, that Jesus is looking for?

  65. Because the reality is for most of us, we are in a success culture.

  66. If you think you're not, then try again and look again.

  67. Think about just Chatswood.

  68. Think about just Chatswood.

  69. You want your kids to succeed and be happy.

  70. And you don't have to look so far around in Chatswood to find a Turing College at every corner of this city.

  71. There's options for extracurricular after school.

  72. There are school buses, I won't name which school, in our very local area that have the slogans,

  73. watch us change the world.

  74. Before high school graduates graduate, there will be business and career pathways advertised to them.

  75. Because we want them to succeed in the world.

  76. And you see, the danger for us is that the fruitfulness that you and I live and breathe is very much not the same fruitfulness that Jesus desires for your children,

  77. your grandchildren, your spouse, and even for yourself.

  78. Notice what Jesus says about the purpose in verse 12.

  79. This is to my Father's glory that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.

  80. And to understand the fruit, Jesus tells us what it's for.

  81. Number one, it's not for us.

  82. The fruitfulness is to glorify God.

  83. It's to make him big.

  84. It's to make him great.

  85. Because he is worthy of all praise.

  86. And number two, it's outwardly that our fruit is to be a demonstration of Christ's work in us.

  87. In other words, the fruitfulness that we are seeing here is the growth, the total transformation of the life of a Christian to become more and more and more like Jesus.

  88. Christians call this sanctification, the process of being made more and more to the image of Jesus Christ.

  89. And it's not an instant one, but as we see in this passage, it is a promised one.

  90. And so fruitfulness, sanctification, it's all of it.

  91. It's all the transformation.

  92. It's growing in the fruit of the Spirit.

  93. Patience, love, kindness, self-control.

  94. Christ-likeness.

  95. It is growing in love for God and others.

  96. It is bearing fruit of seeing other people come to follow Christ.

  97. But also, yes, the fruitfulness is not for us.

  98. It is for God's glory.

  99. It is outwardly.

  100. But did you see in verse 11?

  101. It's a reality that the Christian ought to also have joy from.

  102. Growing to be like Jesus.

  103. Transformation, fruitfulness, sanctification is a joy gifted by Jesus.

  104. Verse 11, I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and so that my joy may be complete.

  105. I wonder if you've got friends who've told you after you've shared about, I'm a follower of Jesus, I go to church.

  106. And they say, you know what, that sounds like a great idea.

  107. I'll check out Jesus.

  108. But, you know, I'll start obeying all the commands after I stop partying.

  109. Maybe I'll take Jesus more seriously when I get older or when I have kids.

  110. Maybe we'll focus on the church part after the HSC is finished or after this big work season.

  111. Because I just don't want Jesus and the Bible to squeeze out all the joy of what I want to do.

  112. See, Jesus pushes the opposite idea, doesn't he?

  113. He's not withholding the secret to joy.

  114. He says that keeping his commands, glorifying him is for our joy.

  115. It's for your benefit to glorify him.

  116. And so what Jesus calls us to do is to lean into his joy as surpassing worth than the joy that this world has to offer.

  117. Lean into the fruitfulness that he longs for you.

  118. And so where does fruitfulness start?

  119. Where does that begin?

  120. Fruitfulness begins in remaining.

  121. Verse 4.

  122. Remain in me as I also remain in you.

  123. No branch can bear fruit by itself.

  124. It must remain in the vine.

  125. You see, Jesus doubles down here.

  126. Not only is remaining a method, it is the only method.

  127. Remaining in Christ.

  128. If you want to be fruitful in Christ, you are to remain in Christ.

  129. And the sense of remain here that we ought to see is it's a heart, will, and mind that is wholly fixed and united with Christ's own heart, will, and mind.

  130. As much as a branch looks like the vine and the vine is full of branches, our whole heart and affections and desires become consumed by Christ.

  131. In other words, remaining is actually an active reality.

  132. It's not a passive one.

  133. Remaining in Christ is not reaching a destination as much as embracing the destination that you are in.

  134. I was chatting to a school chaplain and they asked me, hey, do you know this kid?

  135. He says he goes to your youth group and he also comes to my lunchtime group.

  136. And I'm like, great, what was his name?

  137. And they said it and I was like, oh, never heard of them before.

  138. And I started feeling bad because I was like, oh, my goodness, my memory's starting to go quite early.

  139. I don't even know my own youth.

  140. So I checked our attendance list, searched up the kid and realised that they actually turned up twice, three terms ago,

  141. but were still claiming to be a member here at St Paul's.

  142. And I was like, that's sweet that they consider St Paul's to be their church.

  143. But also, they don't really go to our church.

  144. But somehow, that's how you and I treat remaining in Christ.

  145. You see following Jesus as more of a title that you have, the credentials, the bachelor, the masters under your name that you carry around,

  146. claiming the name of Jesus, claiming the title of Christian, claiming the title of Christian,

  147. rather than be mastered by Jesus.

  148. You see, the vine imagery is so powerful that the remaining is not only us to him, but in what Jesus does for us.

  149. This four, remain in me as I also remain in you.

  150. To be a Christian, you must be mastered by Jesus and his words.

  151. Look at verse 7 and 10.

  152. If you remain in me and my words remain in you,

  153. and verse 10.

  154. If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love.

  155. Friends, there's something synonymous about loving Jesus,

  156. remaining in him and his words.

  157. You might be new to Jesus.

  158. Some of you might be keen to check out Jesus.

  159. You love the forgiveness and love of Jesus,

  160. but you're not quite sure about certain other parts of the Bible that you've heard.

  161. I just want to encourage you that having faith in Jesus,

  162. as you discover who he is,

  163. is taking him at his word,

  164. that his way indeed is better.

  165. I hear the warning in verse 6.

  166. If you do not remain in me,

  167. you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers.

  168. Such branches are picked up and thrown into the fire and burn.

  169. So yes,

  170. when you reject God,

  171. you reject the God who rightly deserves

  172. all the glory and praise.

  173. He deserves your attention,

  174. but also,

  175. you harm yourself.

  176. Have you thought it that way before?

  177. Sin harms you

  178. in a way that you might not see,

  179. but it's harming you.

  180. It's still hurting you

  181. because you are broken

  182. from the life source.

  183. You are broken from the true vine.

  184. It's no benefit to you.

  185. And you see,

  186. the difference in remaining in Christ is this.

  187. I must confess,

  188. I'm not organized.

  189. I did have something here,

  190. ready to go,

  191. but I don't have it with me.

  192. I want you just to imagine

  193. that you've got a Tupperware box.

  194. That Tupperware box is you.

  195. Inside of you

  196. is another Tupperware box

  197. that contains the Holy Spirit.

  198. Have a look.

  199. Remember,

  200. God remains in you.

  201. And in John 14,

  202. the Holy Spirit

  203. is promised to those

  204. who trust in him.

  205. And that Tupperware box

  206. is to be in Christ,

  207. which means

  208. at the very center of you

  209. is the Holy Spirit.

  210. And you on the outside

  211. are being encompassed

  212. by Christ.

  213. And so,

  214. if you can imagine

  215. that image

  216. that should have been brought by Ash,

  217. do you see yourself

  218. that you are subsumed,

  219. mastered by the Savior,

  220. the Savior remains in you,

  221. making you

  222. remain in himself?

  223. It's like those babushka dolls.

  224. You're the second,

  225. the middle one.

  226. Friends,

  227. what that means

  228. is 100% fruitfulness.

  229. That you can bear fruit,

  230. that you will bear fruit

  231. just by remaining in him.

  232. That the way

  233. that you slay your sin,

  234. the way that you open your heart

  235. is in Jesus.

  236. In Jesus alone.

  237. It's by his grace alone

  238. that you have been saved,

  239. but it's also

  240. by grace

  241. that you will change.

  242. God's grace,

  243. his life transforming power

  244. is a promise.

  245. Goodness,

  246. I love Romans 8.

  247. Romans 8

  248. is such an incredible passage.

  249. You should go check it out

  250. if you've never done it.

  251. But in verse 11,

  252. did you know,

  253. did you know,

  254. it says that you've got

  255. Jesus' spirit,

  256. the same spirit

  257. that brought Jesus Christ

  258. from the dead.

  259. and in him,

  260. you've got the same

  261. resurrection power.

  262. And so remain in him.

  263. What other fount

  264. will ever give you

  265. eternal life?

  266. What other vine

  267. holds you

  268. in his loving arms

  269. and calls you

  270. friend

  271. than the true vine?

  272. This is the creator God

  273. we're talking about.

  274. He is the unchanging God,

  275. the one who was

  276. and is

  277. and is to come.

  278. And so every time

  279. that you look elsewhere,

  280. you commit idolatry

  281. and you are not

  282. remaining in him.

  283. And so in verse 5,

  284. Jesus continues saying,

  285. apart from me,

  286. you can do nothing.

  287. Friends,

  288. don't believe

  289. that you can bear fruit

  290. by yourself.

  291. Don't think you can change

  292. without the work

  293. of Christ in you.

  294. And yet in the world

  295. of self-help books,

  296. the right measure

  297. of self-care,

  298. the perfect self-determining

  299. strategies for success,

  300. that you perhaps

  301. have imported

  302. a view of self

  303. in the way

  304. that you grow

  305. as a Christian.

  306. But friends,

  307. you are helpless

  308. to make that change.

  309. no more ounce

  310. of striving

  311. will grow you.

  312. Every time

  313. you rely

  314. on yourself

  315. for your own growth,

  316. you are not

  317. remaining

  318. in him.

  319. And perhaps

  320. the way

  321. that we think

  322. about it

  323. is that if we just

  324. have a little injection

  325. of Jesus

  326. inside of us,

  327. everything will go well.

  328. Take this pie chart

  329. as an example

  330. of the time

  331. a person has.

  332. take it as

  333. you've got

  334. a range of things

  335. that you could do.

  336. You could be doing work,

  337. leisure,

  338. health,

  339. family,

  340. friends,

  341. rest,

  342. parties,

  343. your personal finances.

  344. And what we've

  345. done eventually

  346. is that we've

  347. actually gone,

  348. this is

  349. my whole life,

  350. but then

  351. let's play

  352. the idea

  353. that you suddenly

  354. become a Christian

  355. and you realise

  356. that pie chart

  357. has to change

  358. and you have to

  359. add more things.

  360. You need to

  361. include things

  362. like Bible reading,

  363. you need to

  364. include church,

  365. prayer,

  366. serving,

  367. and you're like,

  368. this is really

  369. overwhelming.

  370. How am I meant

  371. to fit this in?

  372. I know I need

  373. to grow,

  374. but I also

  375. have work to do.

  376. And so maybe

  377. if I hear

  378. a sermon,

  379. maybe that will

  380. make me grow.

  381. I feel a little

  382. guilty about my

  383. Bible reading,

  384. so I'm going to

  385. read my Bible.

  386. I'm going to go

  387. back to church

  388. so that maybe

  389. I'm back in God's

  390. good books.

  391. But as you

  392. think about it,

  393. what you'll find

  394. out very quickly

  395. as you value

  396. and prioritise

  397. things is that

  398. whatever you value,

  399. whatever is important

  400. to you,

  401. urgent to you,

  402. will be whatever

  403. takes up the measure

  404. of that pie.

  405. You'll adjust

  406. the proportions

  407. of leisure,

  408. work,

  409. family,

  410. sport,

  411. based off you.

  412. And so perhaps

  413. the better image

  414. is the spoke

  415. of a wheel

  416. and the car's

  417. logo on that

  418. wheel.

  419. All the spokes

  420. resemble the

  421. proportions of

  422. your life,

  423. work,

  424. kids,

  425. rest,

  426. all of that.

  427. But at the

  428. very centre

  429. of the wheel

  430. is you.

  431. Whatever you

  432. value sets

  433. the size

  434. of that portion.

  435. But friends,

  436. fruitfulness,

  437. sanctification,

  438. sanctification

  439. is having

  440. Jesus at

  441. the centre

  442. of the wheel

  443. because all

  444. the spokes

  445. connect to him.

  446. Putting Jesus

  447. first is simply

  448. putting him

  449. in the right

  450. slot of the wheel.

  451. Not a portion

  452. of it,

  453. but in the centre

  454. of it.

  455. He'll dictate

  456. the size,

  457. he'll detect

  458. the proportion

  459. and what is even

  460. in the wheel

  461. and what is not.

  462. Because when

  463. Jesus is at

  464. the centre,

  465. do you

  466. understand

  467. that you

  468. are remaining

  469. in him?

  470. And when

  471. Jesus is not,

  472. do you

  473. understand that

  474. you are not

  475. remaining in

  476. Christ?

  477. When you,

  478. the individual,

  479. are at the

  480. centre,

  481. you are just

  482. a branch.

  483. Just like the

  484. many individual

  485. branches in this

  486. world,

  487. not connected

  488. to the vine.

  489. Verse 4,

  490. again,

  491. remain in

  492. me

  493. as I

  494. also

  495. remain

  496. in you.

  497. Do you

  498. not realise

  499. it's the

  500. living God

  501. who is living

  502. and active

  503. inside of you

  504. that is making

  505. the sanctification

  506. happen?

  507. He's the one

  508. who's growing

  509. your heart

  510. for worship.

  511. He's the one

  512. that is growing

  513. you to be

  514. more like him.

  515. And anything

  516. that you

  517. do,

  518. anything

  519. that looks

  520. like good

  521. works,

  522. anything

  523. that looks

  524. like glorifying

  525. God,

  526. is simply

  527. you partaking

  528. in what God

  529. has already

  530. been doing

  531. in you.

  532. And so

  533. instead of

  534. asking what

  535. benefits me,

  536. what makes

  537. me look good,

  538. what makes

  539. my worth,

  540. my goals,

  541. what works

  542. for my

  543. preferences,

  544. you ask

  545. instead,

  546. how does

  547. this honour

  548. Christ?

  549. How will

  550. this express

  551. in love

  552. for others?

  553. Does

  554. this decision

  555. that I

  556. make

  557. remain

  558. and abide

  559. with Christ

  560. more and

  561. more?

  562. How does

  563. that apply

  564. for every

  565. decision

  566. in my life?

  567. And so

  568. I've started

  569. to ask

  570. this question

  571. of my

  572. Christian

  573. brothers and

  574. sisters

  575. when it

  576. comes to

  577. someone,

  578. and a

  579. friend asked

  580. me of this

  581. as well,

  582. and it was

  583. so helpful

  584. for me.

  585. How has

  586. being a

  587. disciple of

  588. Jesus

  589. shaped how

  590. you think

  591. about

  592. X,

  593. Y,

  594. Z?

  595. With

  596. every

  597. life

  598. decision

  599. you

  600. make,

  601. work,

  602. jobs,

  603. all of

  604. it,

  605. how has

  606. being a

  607. disciple of

  608. Jesus

  609. shaped how

  610. you think

  611. about a

  612. certain

  613. issue?

  614. Friends,

  615. when Jesus

  616. is at the

  617. centre of

  618. the spoke,

  619. we realise

  620. that this

  621. is the

  622. fruitfulness

  623. that he

  624. longs for

  625. and that

  626. your union

  627. with him

  628. assures

  629. it.

  630. And

  631. perhaps

  632. you're

  633. someone

  634. in the

  635. room

  636. that

  637. wants

  638. to

  639. bear

  640. fruit.

  641. Perhaps

  642. you're

  643. someone

  644. who

  645. longs

  646. for

  647. change

  648. in your

  649. life

  650. and in

  651. your

  652. circumstances.

  653. You've

  654. prayed

  655. long and

  656. hard for

  657. that

  658. change.

  659. I think

  660. Jesus has

  661. encouragement

  662. for you

  663. that perhaps

  664. if you're

  665. not bearing

  666. fruit,

  667. have a look

  668. at verse

  669. two.

  670. While

  671. every branch

  672. that does

  673. bear fruit

  674. he prunes

  675. so that

  676. it will be

  677. even more

  678. fruitful.

  679. You might

  680. be going

  681. through what

  682. might be

  683. the pruning,

  684. the cleansing,

  685. the trimming

  686. that will

  687. lead to

  688. the fruitfulness

  689. that the

  690. vine dresser

  691. is longing

  692. for.

  693. But friends,

  694. don't,

  695. don't,

  696. don't,

  697. don't cut

  698. yourself off

  699. from the

  700. root that

  701. will solve

  702. you.

  703. Because we

  704. live in a

  705. world that

  706. often says

  707. your own

  708. way.

  709. People grow

  710. in different

  711. ways,

  712. learn in

  713. different ways

  714. and those

  715. things are

  716. true,

  717. yet we

  718. import that

  719. wrongly into

  720. our view as

  721. a Christian

  722. as we

  723. grow.

  724. You might

  725. think as you

  726. see someone

  727. who's a wise

  728. sage,

  729. I'm not as

  730. on fire,

  731. I'm not an

  732. on fire

  733. Christian like

  734. them.

  735. They're just

  736. a different

  737. species every

  738. time you

  739. think of that

  740. pastor.

  741. No,

  742. that's not

  743. true,

  744. friends.

  745. You have

  746. the same

  747. source.

  748. In fact,

  749. you are more

  750. connected to

  751. that person

  752. in Christ

  753. than you

  754. are with

  755. a blood

  756. relative of

  757. yours who

  758. is not

  759. in Christ.

  760. In fact,

  761. you are more

  762. likely because

  763. you are in

  764. Christ to be

  765. more like that

  766. on fire

  767. person than

  768. the other.

  769. And so in

  770. whatever way

  771. the Lord

  772. will,

  773. you are to

  774. become more

  775. like Christ.

  776. Go on and

  777. be encouraged

  778. by someone

  779. who is on

  780. fire and

  781. change.

  782. Friends,

  783. there is

  784. only one

  785. true vine.

  786. Don't go

  787. chasing another

  788. vine.

  789. Those vines

  790. won't give

  791. the vitality

  792. and flourishing

  793. life that you

  794. long for.

  795. They might

  796. give you

  797. fruit,

  798. that thrill,

  799. that mist

  800. and whim

  801. of pleasure,

  802. but there's

  803. none that has

  804. died for you

  805. so that you

  806. might have

  807. true life.

  808. Because Jesus

  809. is the true

  810. vine.

  811. So remain

  812. in him,

  813. long for the

  814. transformation,

  815. and remain

  816. in a way

  817. that longs

  818. to be an

  819. on fire

  820. Christian.

  821. Remain in

  822. a way that

  823. puts away

  824. the selfishness

  825. in your

  826. life.

  827. Remain.

  828. The question

  829. is,

  830. are you

  831. remaining?

  832. Do you

  833. remain in

  834. his words?

  835. Because it

  836. says in

  837. verse 7,

  838. if you

  839. remain in

  840. me and

  841. my words

  842. remain in

  843. you,

  844. that the

  845. way you

  846. walk closer

  847. to the

  848. Lord,

  849. in the

  850. vitally

  851. interconnected

  852. life,

  853. in the

  854. same manner

  855. of that

  856. overgrowing

  857. vine,

  858. is that

  859. you hear

  860. God's

  861. word.

  862. And you

  863. might say,

  864. Ash,

  865. that's such

  866. an easy

  867. one.

  868. Solution

  869. to every

  870. Christian

  871. problem,

  872. you say

  873. it again,

  874. it's just

  875. to read

  876. the Bible.

  877. No,

  878. by no

  879. means am

  880. I saying

  881. that.

  882. Friends,

  883. if you're

  884. reading the

  885. Bible trying

  886. to get

  887. holy,

  888. less greedy,

  889. less lustful,

  890. become a

  891. better person,

  892. more loving,

  893. more patient,

  894. to get

  895. somewhere in

  896. life,

  897. you are

  898. missing the

  899. point.

  900. Read it

  901. because the

  902. holy scriptures

  903. have revealed

  904. to you the

  905. living word,

  906. Christ himself.

  907. Read it

  908. not to be

  909. fruitful,

  910. read it

  911. to remain.

  912. Read

  913. trusting that

  914. Jesus will

  915. work on the

  916. inward change

  917. in you as

  918. he has done

  919. that time

  920. and time

  921. and time

  922. and time

  923. and time

  924. again for

  925. his people.

  926. And so

  927. can I

  928. reverse the

  929. question to

  930. you?

  931. Do you

  932. believe that

  933. Jesus himself

  934. is the

  935. solution to

  936. your very

  937. inward need,

  938. the very

  939. change that

  940. you are

  941. longing for?

  942. Not Jesus

  943. solving it by

  944. what you

  945. want,

  946. but Jesus

  947. himself.

  948. Have a look

  949. at the rest

  950. of the verse.

  951. And then

  952. ask whatever

  953. you wish

  954. and it

  955. will be

  956. done for

  957. you.

  958. There are

  959. many things

  960. that God

  961. welcomes me

  962. to pray and

  963. ask him,

  964. but I just

  965. love this.

  966. I love that

  967. he promises

  968. me that

  969. you and

  970. I will

  971. grow in

  972. obedience

  973. as we

  974. ask for

  975. it.

  976. He will

  977. grow the

  978. fruitfulness

  979. of your

  980. remaining

  981. and your

  982. obedience.

  983. obedience.

  984. In fact,

  985. you are

  986. his fruit.

  987. The vine

  988. dresser wants

  989. to grow

  990. you,

  991. shape you,

  992. and he

  993. wants you

  994. to commit

  995. and give

  996. your life

  997. to him,

  998. for you

  999. are the

  1000. fruits of

  1001. his labor.

  1002. Jesus

  1003. delights in

  1004. the fruit

  1005. that he is

  1006. working in

  1007. you.

  1008. In Hebrews

  1009. 13,

  1010. verse 35,

  1011. it says,

  1012. through

  1013. Jesus,

  1014. therefore,

  1015. let us

  1016. continually

  1017. offer to

  1018. God a

  1019. sacrifice

  1020. of praise,

  1021. the fruit

  1022. of lips

  1023. that openly

  1024. profess his

  1025. name.

  1026. Let's pray

  1027. in light of

  1028. that reality.

  1029. Father God,

  1030. in Christ,

  1031. you have

  1032. promised us

  1033. change.

  1034. Get rid

  1035. of the

  1036. idols and

  1037. distractions

  1038. that hinder

  1039. our remaining

  1040. in you,

  1041. and we ask

  1042. that you

  1043. might enable

  1044. a focus

  1045. our eyes

  1046. on you

  1047. so deep

  1048. and so

  1049. firm,

  1050. a grasp

  1051. that will

  1052. not let

  1053. go,

  1054. rather than

  1055. ourselves.

  1056. We thank

  1057. you that

  1058. you are a

  1059. God that

  1060. will finish

  1061. what you

  1062. start.

  1063. And so we

  1064. ask that you

  1065. might help

  1066. us trust

  1067. in the

  1068. promise

  1069. that you

  1070. will make

  1071. us how

  1072. you have

  1073. designed us

  1074. to be.

  1075. We ask

  1076. that we

  1077. remain in

  1078. you,

  1079. knowing that

  1080. you remain

  1081. in us.

  1082. Amen.
